A number of Carboniferous paleo-karstic bauxite deposits occur in the Xiuwen-Qingzhen area, central Guizhou Province, which constitute an important part of the central Guizhou-Southern Chongqing bauxite belt in southwestern China. These deposits consist of lenticular and stratiform orebodies hosted in the Lower Carboniferous Jiujialu Formation, which lies unconformably above carbonate rocks (mainly dolomite) of the Middle and Upper Cambrian Loushanguan Group, Shilengshui Formation and Lower Cambrian Qingxudong Formation. Although it is generally agreed that the bauxite resulted from weathering of Cambrian rocks below the unconformity, it remains unclear whether the carbonates alone can provide sufficient material for the formation of the deposits. In this study, we examined the mineralogy and major, trace and rare earth elements geochemistry of bauxite and bauxitic clays from the Yunfeng deposit in the Xiuwen-Qingzhen area and compared them to previously published data of a paleo-weathering profile consisting of Loushanguan dolomite underlying the sub-Carboniferous unconformity and the “Black Rock Sequence” of the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation, in order to evaluate the sources of the bauxite. The bauxite ores are composed of diaspore as the main ore mineral, along with small amounts of pyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, stibnite, xenotime and uranium-bearing minerals, and are characterized by high contents of uranium and phosphorus. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns and various bivariant diagrams commonly used to study the provenance of bauxite including Eu/Eu ∗ vs TiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , Eu/Eu ∗ vs Sm/Nd, TiO 2 vs Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 /Th, Th vs Ta, Th vs Nb and Nb vs Ta suggest that the Loushanguan dolomite and the Niutitang “Black Rock Sequence” are both potential source rocks. However, a comparison in U and Th contents between the paleo-weathering profile of the Loushanguan dolomite and the bauxite samples suggests that the dolomite alone cannot provide the materials for the bauxite ores. Instead, the “Black Rock Sequence” may have contributed most of the ore-forming materials, which are mainly transported from source regions where the Niutitang Formation was exposed, weathered and eroded. • Cobalt is enriched (up to 962 ppm) in the paleo-karstic bauxite deposit at Yunfeng. • Cobalt is positively correlated with sulfur. • Cobalt occurs mainly as Co-bearing pyrites and Co-rich sulfides/sulfoarsenides. Cobalt can be enriched in a variety of different geologic settings, while it is mainly produced as a by-product of sediment-hosted stratiform Cu deposits and magmatic Ni-Cu deposits associated with mafic and ultramafic rocks. In this study, we report elevated Co concentrations in a paleo-karstic bauxite deposit at Yunfeng, Guizhou Province. Whole-rock chemical analyses indicate that Co is concentrated in carbonaceous ferruginous clay layers (167–962 ppm, average 383 ppm, n = 5) and siderite layers (47–439 ppm, average 213 ppm, n = 7) within the bauxite deposit. The positive correlation between Co and S, together with petrographic and EPMA analyses, suggests that Co occurs primarily as Co-rich/bearing sulfides/sulfoarsenides rather than cobaltiferous oxides/hydroxides as in most lateritic Ni-Co deposits. Many of the Co concentrations measured in this study are higher than the minimum grade (300 ppm) or cut-off grade (200 ppm) for economic exploitation of Co from sulfides or arsenides. Basing on these results, we put forward the scientific significance of Co enrichment in paleo-karstic environments and the potential importance of Co resources (as by-products of aluminum production) in bauxite deposits. Many paleo-karstic bauxite deposits contain elevated concentrations of Ni and Co. It has been known that Co and Ni are dominantly hosted in sulfides, but it remains unclear how Ni and Co were incorporated into sulfides and what kind of physiochemical conditions were involved. The Maochang bauxite deposit, as one of the large Ni- and Co-bearing paleo-karstic bauxite deposits in Guizhou Province, southwest China, was selected to tackle these questions. Detailed mineralogical and sulfur isotopic analyses using integrated EBSD, EPMA, LA-ICPMS, and LA-MC-ICPMS methods revealed three stages of sulfide mineralization: stage I with pyrite (PyI), stage II with pyrite (PyII), millerite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and violarite, and stage III with pyrite (PyIII), chalcopyrite and galena. The fine-grained, euhedral PyI has up to 0.79 wt% Ni and up to 0.53 wt% Co. In contrast, PyII, which replaced or overgrew PyI, exhibits high but variable Ni, Co and As contents, and is further divided into three sub-types: Ni-rich PyII-a (up to 16.54 wt% Ni, 0.94 wt% Co, and 0.38 wt% As) and PyII-b (up to 3.30 wt% Ni, 1.41 wt% Co, and 0.36 wt% As), and Co-rich PyII-c (up to 0.99 wt% Ni, 7.57 wt% Co, and 1.81 wt% As). PyIII is Ni- and Co-poor. Ni increases from PyI to PyIIa and PyIIb, and then decreases to PyIIc and PyIII, whereas Co remains at similar levels for PyI, PyIIa and PyIIb, significantly increases to PyIIc, and then drops abruptly to PyIII. δ34S V-CDT values vary dramatically from negative values for PyI (−6.9 to −16.6‰) to positive values for PyII-b (+19.4 to +22.8‰), sphalerite (+17.2 to +19.7‰), and PyIII (+25.3 to +32.3‰). Based on these results, and considering that the protoliths of the bauxites were likely Ni- and Co-rich black shales according to previous studies, a four-step model is proposed to explain the enrichment of Ni and Co in the bauxites: 1) during weathering and bauxite formation on the surface, Ni and Co were leached from the black shale together with sulfate; the metals were dissolved in the solution and partly adsorbed by Fe-oxides/hydroxides under moderate to high f O2 ; 2) during early diagenesis, the sulfate was partially reduced to sulfide via the bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) process and formed PyI; much of the Ni and Co, together with sulfate, remained in the solution; 3) with increasing burial, temperature increased and f O2 decreased, and the remaining sulfate (with elevated δ34S V-CDT) was reduced to sulfide via the same BSR process and formed PyII; Ni was largely consumed and incorporated into PyIIa and PyIIb, whereas Co remained in the solution until precipitation of PyIIc; 4) by the time of PyIII precipitation, both Ni and Co had been taken by PyII, leaving a Ni- and Co-poor solution and PyIII. • The CNV region was identified in Chinese goat of CADM2 gene. • The CADM2 gene was higher expressed in lung and heart than other tissues. • There were significant differences in individual growth traits of different CNV types. Copy number variations (CNVs) are the wide structural variations ranging from 50 bp to several Mb at genome which can affect gene expression and further impacting growth and development traits of livestock. Comparing with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), CNVs can better explain the genetic and phenotypic diversity, are increasingly important in biological research. As a member of immunoglobulin super-family, cell adhesion molecule 2 (CADM2) plays a vital role in cancer development and metabolic regulation. Here, we tested the CNV of CADM2 gene in 443 goats across five breeds (Guizhou white goat, GZW; Guizhou black goat, GZB; Africa Nubian goat, AN; Boer goat × Huai goat, BH; Boer goat, BG) and detected its association with phenotypic traits. Subsequently, we analyzed the CADM2 gene expression level in different tissues of NB goats (n = 3, Nubian × Black) and the transcriptional expression in lung is much higher than others. The results showed that the CNV of CADM2 has a significant association with withers height and body length in GZB goat (P < 0.01), in which individuals with type of deletion were superior to those with duplication or normal type in term of body hight and body length (P < 0.01). In summary, this study confirmed the association between CNV of CADM2 gene and growth traits, and our research data indicated the CADM2 -CNV may considered as a prospective candidate for the molecular marker-assisted selection breeding of goat growth traits, which conducived to accelerating the genetic amelioration in Chinese goats. Simple Summary: Copy number variation is a common genetic polymorphism and is mainly represented by submicroscopic levels of deletion and duplication which are caused by rearrangement of the genome. It is well known that copy number variations of genes are associated with growth traits of livestock. In this study, we detected the correlation between the copy number variation of the Opn4 gene and growth traits of Guizhou goats. We found that the copy number variation of the Opn4 gene had a significant influence on the body length and body weight of Guizhou goats. The results may provide preliminary suggestions into Guizhou goat breeding and new insights into the future of CNV as a new promising molecular marker in animal breeding. Extensive research has been carried out regarding the correlation between the growth traits of livestock and genetic polymorphisms, including single nucleotide polymorphisms and copy number variations (CNV). The purpose of this study was to analyze the CNV and its genetic effects of the Opn4 gene in 284 Guizhou goats (Guizhou black goat: n = 186, Guizhou white goat: n = 98). We used qPCR to detect the CNV of the Opn4 gene in Guizhou goats, and the classification results were correlated with the corresponding individual growth traits by SPSS software. The results showed that the Opn4 gene had a superior effect on growth traits with multiple copy variants in Guizhou black goats, and there was a significant correlation between copy number variation sites and body length traits. Contrary to the former conclusion, in Guizhou white goats, individuals with the Normal copy number type showed superior growth traits and copy number variant sites were significantly associated with body weight traits. Therefore, the CNV of the Opn4 gene can be used as a candidate molecular genetic marker to improve goat growth traits, speeding up the breeding process of goat elite varieties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
