In France, a national surveillance plan to monitor congenital Schmallenberg virus (SBV) outbreaks was set up in January 2012, and has shown that SBV had become widespread throughout the country since mid-2011. However, the number of SBV-infected farms cannot accurately be estimated through congenital SBV reporting alone. Therefore, GDS France (National Animal Health Farmers' Organization) conducted serological investigations in cattle and sheep holdings in several departments in spring 2012 to assess SBV exposure in 2011. A serological study was also conducted in the department of Saône-et-Loire (southern Burgundy) to establish an accurate local overview of circulation of virus in 2011 among cattle. The study was conducted following guidelines elaborated by the French Platform for animal health surveillance. Results indicated differences in within-herd seroprevalence between cattle herds and sheep herds in departments where outbreaks of congenital SBV were reported in early 2012 and a great heterogeneity in seroprevalence between areas (even between areas geographically close to each other). In departments which had been severely affected in early 2012, the overall impact of SBV infection in cattle herds during the 2012-2013 calving season will probably be low. On the other hand, given the low proportion of immunised ewes in sheep SBV outbreaks, sheep flocks which were already affected in early 2012 may once again face congenital cases of SBV [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study that investigates the impact of Schmallenberg virus (SBV), caused by Orthobunyavirus, on sheep flocks in France. The French local animal health organization Groupements de défense sanitaire (GDS France) conducted a preliminary assessment on sheeps that were positive of SBV. Moreover, GDS found that healthy lambs accounted for 54,939, while 8,395 were dead 12 hours after they were born and 1,214 had deformities.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate real-world treatment outcomes in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) treated with intravitreal aflibercept (IVT-AFL) in routine clinical practice in France., Methods: RAINBOW (NCT02279537) was an ambispective, observational, 4-year study assessing IVT-AFL effectiveness, treatment patterns, and safety in patients with nAMD in France. Treatment-naïve patients prescribed IVT-AFL and treated according to local practice (pro re nata or treat-and-extend) were eligible. Three treatment cohorts were retrospectively identified based on their treatment pattern within the first 12 months: regular (3 initial monthly IVT-AFL injections received within 45-90 days after the first injection in month 0 and followed by injections every 2 months), irregular with the initial monthly injections, and irregular without the initial monthly injections. The primary endpoint was mean change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) from baseline to month 12. The 48-month results are described here., Results: Overall, the study included 516 patients (each with one study eye), and 30.2% of patients completed 48 months of IVT-AFL treatment. Mean change in BCVA from baseline (56.5 letters) to month 48 for patients with an assessment at both time points was + 1.1 (regular cohort, n = 47), + 0.1 (irregular cohort with initial monthly injections, n = 115), and - 1.3 letters (irregular cohort without initial monthly injections, n = 26), representing a decrease from the gains achieved at month 12. Mean number of IVT-AFL injections received by month 48 in the treatment cohorts was 14.9, 13.7, and 11.9, respectively. The safety profile of IVT-AFL was consistent with previous studies., Conclusion: In RAINBOW, the 48-month results demonstrate a lack of long-term effectiveness of IVT-AFL treatment of nAMD due to progressive undertreatment in routine clinical practice in France. Background: The Schmallenberg virus (SBV) emerged in Europe in 2011 and caused a widespread epidemic in ruminants.In France, SBV emergence was monitored through a national multi-stakeholder surveillance and investigation system. Based on the monitoring data collected from January 2012 to August 2013, we describe the spread of SBV in France during two seasons of dissemination (vector seasons 2011 and 2012) and we provide a large-scale assessment of the impact of this new disease in ruminants., Results: SBV impact in infected herds was primarily due to the birth of stillborns or deformed foetuses and neonates. Congenital SBV morbidity level was on average moderate, although higher in sheep than in other ruminant species. On average, 8% of lambs, 3% of calves and 2% of kids born in SBV-infected herds showed typical congenital SBV deformities. In addition, in infected herds, farmers reported retrospectively a lower prolificacy during the vector season, suggesting a potential impact of acute SBV infection during mating and early stages of gestation., Conclusions: Due to the lack of available control and prevention measures, SBV spread quickly in the naive ruminant population. France continues to monitor for SBV, and updated information is made available online on a regular basis [http://www.plateforme-esa.fr/]. Outbreaks of congenital SBV are expected to occur sporadically from now on, but further epidemics may also occur if immunity at population level declines.

Purpose: To compare Nd:YAG laser rates following implantation of AcrySof(®) SN60WF (Alcon), Akreos(®) AO-MI60 (Baush & Lomb), and Hoya(®) YA-60BB (Hoya) intraocular lenses., Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at three French centers with each implanting at least two of the three implants. Included patients had undergone uncomplicated cataract surgery with at least 3 years of follow-up. Records of patients implanted with one of the three IOL's were drawn randomly from the surgical logs. Postoperative data were obtained from the medical records of either the surgeon or the referring physician. Time elapsing until Nd:YAG laser was analysed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves., Results: Three hundred eyes were implanted (AcrySof(®) 126, Akreos(®) 89, and Hoya(®) 85). AcrySof(®) recipients were the youngest (AcrySof(®) 72.1, Akreos(®) 76.4, and Hoya(®) 75.2 years of age: P=0.0007). The sex ratio was 4:6 male:female. Follow-up was longest for Hoya eyes (AcrySof(®) 29.4, Akreos(®) 24.6 and Hoya(®) 34.6 months; P=0.0002). Eyes implanted with AcrySof(®) had 1.74 times less chance of Nd:YAG laser treatment than Hoya eyes (P=0.0327) and 3.50 times less than Akreos(®) eyes (P<0.0001). The results remained unchanged when the analysis was restricted to events in the first 24 months (Risk Ratios: Hoya(®)=2.64: P=0.02; and Akreos(®)=4.22: P=0.0001). Adjustment on unbalanced confounding variables did not alter the results., Conclusions: Eyes with AcrySof(®) implants required significantly fewer Nd:YAG laser capsulotomies than those with Hoya(®) and Akreos(®) implants and were therefore less subject to Nd:YAG laser treatment complications, thus ensuring better vision at the lowest cost., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. In 2006, an outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Montevideo infections occurred in France. A matched case-control study and microbiological, environmental, and veterinary investigations were conducted to determine the source of this outbreak. A case was defined as a resident of France in whom Salmonella Montevideo was isolated from a stool or blood specimen between October 16, 2006, and January 6, 2007. Patients were interviewed using a standardized questionnaire. Salmonella Montevideo food isolates collected in 2006 by the nonhuman Salmonella surveillance system were reviewed, and a trace-back investigation was carried out. Salmonella strains isolated in case-patients and in suspected food were subtyped by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Twenty-three cases were identified. Ten (63%) of the 16 interviewed cases against only 11 (35%) of the 31 controls reported eating a soft cheese made with raw milk from cows. Contaminated cheese was traced to a single processing plant that had faced an episode of Salmonella Montevideo contamination in September-October 2006. At that time, the distribution of batches of cheese found contaminated by Salmonella Montevideo was blocked. Microbiological investigation indicated that 70% (16/23) of strains isolated from case-patients and 93% (28/30) of strains isolated from cheese produced by the incriminated plant shared indistinguishable PFGE patterns. Comparing the onset of illness of cases and cheese production time in the incriminated plant, we concluded that this Salmonella outbreak was caused by raw-milk cheese in which low-level contamination had gone undetected.

Between August 2005 and March 2006 in France, 69 cases of Salmonella enterica serotype Manhattan (Salmonella Manhattan) were reported, 51 (74%) of them from southeastern France. At the time of the alert (November 2005), 13 cases and 33 controls were interviewed. Cases were more likely than controls to have eaten pork sausages (OR=5.9, confidence interval CI [1.3; 26.9]) and beef (OR=9.3, CI [1.3; 68.6]). At the same time, 19 strains of Salmonella Manhattan isolated from meat products in southeastern France, reported to the French food safety agency (Afssa, Agence francaise de securite sanitaire des aliments) in September and November 2005, had an indistinguishable PFGE profile to the 7 human isolates of Salmonella Manhattan from the outbreak in southeastern France. Trace-back investigations revealed that pork samples came from one wholesaler whose pork products had tested positive for S. Manhattan during routine food testing in August 2005. This wholesaler supplied retail outlets in southeastern France. Additionally, a slaughterhouse supplying the wholesaler was inspected and widespread contamination with Salmonella spp. and S. Manhattan was found. Cooperation between the national agencies in charge of human health (Institut de veille sanitaire, InVS) and food safety (Afssa) allowed us to determine the most probable source of contamination and to take appropriate control measures.
