Pore‐throat structure is a key factor that influences the storage and fluid flow capacity of tight sandstone reservoirs. Taking the tight sandstone reservoir of Xu2 Fm in Zhongba area as an example, the reservoir quality, pore‐throat type and pore size distribution of tight sandstone in the study area were described by casting thin section, scanning electron microscope and high‐pressure mercury injection test. In order to quantitatively characterize the complexity and heterogeneity of pore‐throat structure, fractal analysis was performed using mercury saturation and pore size data. This study mainly reveals the relationship between the geometric shape characteristics and fractal dimension of the binary pore structure of ultra‐low permeability tight sandstone and clarifies the influence of different scale pore throats on reservoir physical properties. The results indicate that the physical properties of the reservoir in the study area are poor, the pores are mainly intergranular pores and dissolution pores, the throat is flake and necked and the pore size distribution range is large. The fractal curve obtained by the mercury saturation method shows a significant turning point, and the pore‐throat system is divided into two types: small‐scale and large‐scale. The fractal dimension of large‐scale pore throat is greater than the three‐dimensional Euclidean space dimension, which does not conform to the fractal theory. The fractal dimension of small‐scale pore throat is closely related to the pore‐throat structure and has obvious fractal characteristics. The geometric shape of binary pore‐throat structure in tight sandstone is the main factor affecting the difference of fractal dimension. The development of small pores in sandstone is positively correlated with the total porosity, but its contribution to permeability is relatively low. Winter wheat is a significant global food crop, and it is crucial to monitor its distribution for better agricultural management, land planning, and environmental sustainability. However, the distribution style of winter wheat planting fields is not consistent due to different terrain conditions. In mountainous areas, winter wheat planting units are smaller in size and fragmented in distribution compared to plain areas. Unfortunately, most crop-mapping research based on deep learning ignores the impact of topographic relief on crop distribution and struggles to handle hilly areas effectively. In this paper, we propose a cross-modal segmentation network for winter wheat mapping in complex terrain using remote-sensing multi-temporal images and DEM data. First, we propose a diverse receptive fusion (DRF) module, which applies a deformable receptive field to optical images during the feature fusion process, allowing it to match winter wheat plots of varying scales and a fixed receptive field to the DEM to extract evaluation features at a consistent scale. Second, we developed a distributed weight attention (DWA) module, which can enhance the feature intensity of winter wheat, thereby reducing the omission rate of planting areas, especially for the small-sized regions in hilly terrain. Furthermore, to demonstrate the performance of our model, we conducted extensive experiments and ablation studies on a large-scale dataset in Lanling county, Shandong province, China. Currently, PRRSV-1 causes a large number of clinical infections in Chinese swine herds, and the prevalence of new strains has presented great challenges. In this study, the novel PRRSV-1 strain SL-01 was isolated, with a genome length of 14,978 bp, and genetic evolution analysis revealed that it belonged to a new subtype branch. Sequence homology analysis showed that the strain was only 82.2%–86.7% identical to the current classical PRRSV-1 strains. In particular, the novel strain exhibited a unique deletion pattern in Nsp2. In addition, GP3 and GP4 of the SL-01 strain showed four consecutive amino acid deletions in the highly variable regions at amino acids 243–248 and 63–68, respectively. Further challenges in piglet and pregnant sow demonstrated that the SL-01 strain could cause the piglet fever and death but less pathogenic to pregnant sow. Ozone pollution in chemical industrial parks is severe and complicated and is significantly influenced by pollutant emissions and meteorological parameters. In this study, we innovatively investigated the formation rules of ozone by using observation-based analyses and a gradient-boosting decision tree (GBDT) model, focusing on a typical chemical industrial park located in the Yangtze River Delta of China. The results revealed that ozone concentration was positively correlated with temperature while negatively correlated with NO2 concentration and relative humidity (RH). Ozone pollution was predominantly observed from April to October (M4–10). The optimized GBDT model was subsequently utilized to establish a specific and quantifiable relationship between each single dominant impact factor (RH, NO2, temperature, and PM2.5) and ozone within a complex and uncertain multi-factor context during M4–10. Detailed discussions were conducted on the reaction rate of ozone-related to different levels of RH and temperature. The accumulation of ozone was favored by high temperature and low RH, with the maximum ozone concentration observed at the RH of 50% and the temperature of 35 °C. The NO2-O3 change curve exhibited distinct phases, including a period of stability, gradual increase, rapid increase, and equilibrium. During the second and third periods, the ratio of ozone production to NO2 consumption was 0.10 and 2.73, respectively. Furthermore, there was a non-monotonic relationship between variations in ozone concentration and PM2.5 concentration. Hence, it is imperative to implement fine control strategies in the park, such as adopting seasonal production strategies, implementing targeted measures for controlling NOx and active VOCs, and employing special control methods during periods of high temperature. Duck salmonellosis is a common acute septic infectious disease that spreads rapidly, with serious harm to the duck breeding industry and public health. To date, there are few reports about the epidemiological characteristics of drug resistance in Salmonella from ducks. In this study, an epidemiological investigation was conducted on drug resistance of 110 Salmonella strains isolated from multiple duck farms in Shandong Province and surrounding areas, China. The multidrug-resistant (MDR) rate for 110 Salmonella strains was up to 71.82% (79/110), and 12 types of drug resistance genes were detected in all isolates, including β-lactams, aminoglycosides, tetracycline, macrolides, and quinolones resistance genes. Using the multilocus sequence typing (MLST) based on 7 housekeeping genes, 13 various ST types were identified among all strains, and ST19 (32/110, 29.09%) was the primary type. As the dominant serotypes, S. Kottbus and S. Typhimurium were divided into multiple ST types. A total of 6 kinds of plasmid incompatibility groups were carried in the Salmonella strains, of which IncFIIs (29/110, 26.36%) was most prevalent, and the class I integrons were detected in 78.18% (86/110) of strains. Furthermore, we found that some drug resistance genes, plasmid incompatibility groups, and class I integrons coexist in the same strain. This phenomenon indicates that class I integrons and plasmids are important ways for the spread of drug resistance genes. Therefore, the spread of antibiotic resistance in Salmonella had been facilitated, especially erythromycin (108/110, 98.18%), streptomycin (93/110, 84.54%), and tetracycline (53/110, 48.18%). To cope with global warming, China has promulgated Enhanced actions on climate change : China ’ s intended nationally determined contributions and will start the national carbon emissions trading market in 2017. Carbon emissions are distributed by the form of free quota and paid quota. However, few literatures have focused on how the economy and the environment would be changed by the change of free quota ratio. This paper establishes the 10 scenarios of different free quota ratio of carbon emissions rights and uses a dynamic, recursive computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to simulate the carbon emissions trading market, to explore the relationship between free quota ratio and carbon trading price, and the impact of carbon trading scheme (ETS) on China’s economy and environment. The results show that free quota ratio will not have a direct impact on gross domestic product (GDP) and other economic and environment indicators but carbon trading prices. The prices and the rate of free payment in the current pilot cities in China are still relatively conservative. It is possible to reach emission peak, 8.21 billion ton, in 2025 and accumulative CO 2 reduction from 2017 to 2030 is 20.02 billion tons, or 59.60% of 2010 world’s total CO 2 emission. Cement, minerals, electricity and nonferrous metals under ETS will suffer great losses, so subsidy should be considered. Finally, we suggested that China should reduce the total carbon rights to increase the carbon price in 2017, and gradually reducing the proportion of free quota, from 90% in 2017 to 50% or less in 2030, by which the peak year of CO 2 emission can meet in 2025. We also suggest that ETS is an effective strategy for CO 2 reduction and the ratio should be gradually reduced in ETS to prevent violent fluctuation of carbon price in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study consisted of a single centre randomised controlled trial with two parallel arms: an acupuncture group (n=20) with 27 affected eyes and a sham group (n=20) with 23 affected eyes. Participants in the acupuncture group received acupuncture treatment once daily, three times weekly for four weeks. Participants assigned to the control group received sham acupuncture, the same protocol as that used for the acupuncture group but without insertion of needles into the skin. The primary outcome measure was the cervical range of motion (CROM) score. Secondary outcome measures were the palpebral fissure size, response rate, and adverse events. All 40 participants completed the study. In the comparison of acupuncture and sham acupuncture, a significant difference was observed between acupuncture and sham acupuncture in CROM score (21.37±15.16 and 32.21±19.54, resp.) (P<0.05) and palpebral fissure size (7.19±2.94 and 5.41±2.45, resp.) (P<0.05). Response rate was also significantly different in the acupuncture group (P<0.05). The gas/particle partitioning of nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nPAHs) and oxy-PAHs (oPAHs) is pivotal to estimate their environmental fate. Simultaneously measured atmospheric concentrations of nPAHs and oPAHs in both gaseous and particulate phases at 18 sites in northern China make it possible to investigate their partitioning process in a large region. The gas/particle partitioning coefficients ( K p ) in this study were higher than those measured in the emission exhausts. The K p for most individual nPAHs was higher than those for their corresponding parent PAHs. Generally higher K p values were found at rural field sites compared to values in the rural villages and cities. Temperature, subcooled liquid–vapor pressure ( P l 0 ) and octanol–air partition coefficient ( K oa ) were all significantly correlated with K p . The slope values between log K p and log P l 0 , ranging from − 0.54 to − 0.34, indicate that the equilibrium of gas/particle partitioning might not be reached, which could be also revealed from a positive correlation between log K p and particulate matter (PM) concentrations. Underestimation commonly exists in all three partitioning models, but the predicted values of K p from the dual model are closer to the measured K p for derivative PAHs in northern China. China’s transport sector is responsible for approximately 10% of national CO2 emissions. In the process of industrialization and urbanization of China, emissions from transport sector would continuously increase. In order to investigate the emissions and reduction potential and provide the policy guidance for policymakers in China’s transport sector, this study decomposed the CO2 emissions using the Kaya identity, calculated the contribution based on the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) method to explore the underlying determinants of emissions change, and then constructed different scenarios to predict the emissions and estimate the potential of emission reduction in the future. Results indicated that carbon emissions in China’s transport sector have increased from 123.14 Mt in 1995 to 670.76 Mt in 2012. Income effect is the dominant factor that results in the increase of emissions while energy intensity effect is the main driving force to lower carbon emissions. The transportation modal shifting, transportation intensity change, and population growth have the positive but relatively minor impact on emissions. The accumulated emission reduction is expected to be 1825.97 Mt, which is 3 times more than the emissions in 2010. Policy recommendations are thus put forward for future emission reduction. Objective To explore the feasibility of dual-source computed tomography (DSCT) in the evaluation of coronary in-stent restenosis (ISR) by comparing the results of DSCT and selective coronary angiography (CAG). Methods In-stent restenosis examination results from DSCT were compared with those obtained using CAG. Results Among 173 stents studied, 156 yielded good quality images when evaluated with DSCT. CAG identified 38 ISR cases, while DSCT found 40. Among the 112 stents in the study with an inner diameter ≥3.0 mm, CAG identified 29 as having ISR, while DSCT reported the same finding in 30; among the 44 stents with inner diameter <3.0 mm, CAG identified ISR in 9, while DSCT found ISR in 10. Conclusions Stent inner diameter is a key factor influencing the imaging of the stent lumen. DSCT demonstrated a higher negative predictive value in ISR assessment, suggesting that it could replace CAG for assessing the patency of stents with a larger inner diameter (≥3 mm). The prioritized purpose of this dissertation is to put forward a scientific and plausible interval of carbon price benchmark on the unified carbon trading market, of which will be scheduled to be established in the year of 2016. A model named EMD–GARCH that integrated Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) with Generalized Autoregressive Conditionally Heteroskedastic (GARCH) together is presented here in order to forecast the carbon price of the five pilots (Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong, and Tianjin) in 2016 so as to provide exogenous data for later analysis. For further study, a recursive dynamic Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model will be structured to explore the impacts on China’s macroeconomics, environmental quality, and energy demand respectively under 8 different simulation scenarios, which are being designed in terms of the aforementioned calculated carbon price outcome. The simulation results illustrate that the unified carbon price policy will exert a comprehensive effect on China in various perspectives that we discussed in this paper. Moreover, regarding the carbon price scenarios, the price level by itself generates a different degree of impacts in improving the environmental quality, decreasing the energy demand, and increasing the macroeconomic growth. Consequently, based on the analysis of those three approaches mix in this study, we suggest the alternative interval of carbon price benchmark in the national unified carbon trading market with a lower bound of 30 yuan/tCO 2 to an upper bound of 50 yuan/tCO 2 . Urbanization is proceeding rapidly in several developing countries such as China. This accelerating urbanization alters the existing land use types in a way that results in more Non-Point Source (NPS) pollution to local surface waters. Reasonable land use planning is necessary. This paper compares seven planning scenarios of a case study area, namely Wulijie, China, from the perspective of NPS pollution. A System Dynamics (SD) model was built for the comparison to adequately capture the planning complexity. These planning scenarios, which were developed by combining different land use intensities (LUIs) and construction speeds (CSs), were then simulated. The results show that compared to scenario S1 (business as usual) all other scenarios will introduce more NPS pollution (with an incremental rate of 22%-70%) to Wulijie. Scenario S6 was selected as the best because it induced relatively less NPS pollution while simultaneously maintaining a considerable development rate. Although LUIs represent a more critical factor compared to CSs, we conclude that both LUIs and CSs need to be taken into account to make the planning more environmentally friendly. It is difficult to accurately identify the winter wheat acreage in the Jianghuai region of China, and the fusion of high-resolution images and medium-resolution image data can improve the image quality and facilitate the identification and acreage extraction of winter wheat. Therefore, the objective of this study is to improve the accuracy of China's medium-spatial resolution image data (environment and disaster monitoring and forecasting satellite data, HJ-1/CCD) in extracting the large area of winter wheat planted. The fusion and object-oriented classification of the 30 m × 30 m HJ-1/CCD multispectral image and 2 m × 2 m GF-1 panchromatic image (GF-1/PMS) of winter wheat at the jointing stage in the study area were studied. The GF-1/PMS panchromatic images were resampled at 8 m, 16 m and 24 m to produce panchromatic images with four spatial resolutions, including 2 m. They were fused with HJ-1/CCD multispectral images by Gram Schmidt (GS). The quality of the fused images was evaluated to pick adequate scale images for the field pattern of winter wheat cultivation in the study area. The HJ-1/CCD multispectral image was resampled to obtain an image with the same scale as the suitable scale fused image. In the two images, the training samples SFI (samples of fused image) and SRI (samples of resampled image) containing spectral and texture information were selected. The fused image (FI) and resampled image (RI) were used for winter wheat acreage extraction using an object-oriented classification method. The results indicated that the fusion effect of 16 m × 16 m fused image was better than 2 m × 2 m, 8 m × 8 m and 24 m × 24 m fused images, with mean, standard deviation, average gradient and correlation coefficient values of 161.15, 83.01, 4.55 and 0.97, respectively. After object-oriented classification, the overall accuracy of SFI for the classification of resampled image RI16m was 92.22%, and the Kappa coefficient was 0.90. The overall accuracy of SFI for the classification of fused image FI16m was 94.44%, and the Kappa coefficient was 0.93. The overall accuracy of SRI for the classification of resampled image RI16m was 84.44%, and the Kappa coefficient was 0.80. The classification effect of SFI for the fused image FI16m was the best, indicating that the object-oriented classification method combined with the fused image and the extraction samples of the fused image (SFI) could extract the winter wheat planting area with precision. In addition, the object-oriented classification method combining resampled images and the extraction samples of fused images (SFI) could extract the winter wheat planting area more effectively. These results indicated that the combination of medium spatial resolution HJ-1/CCD images and high spatial resolution GF-1 satellite images could effectively extract the planting area information of winter wheat in large regions. Promoting low-carbon development in the iron and steel industry (ISI) is essential for China to achieve the carbon neutrality targets. This paper separately adopts the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) technique and the Mean Impact Value (MIV) method to analyze the impact of driving factors on the CO 2 emissions of ISI in the historical and future dimensions. Furthermore, this paper establishes the extreme learning machine model optimized by the bat algorithm (BA-BP) to explore the carbon emission reduction pathways of ISI in the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, the low-speed, medium-speed and high-speed development scenarios considering the constraints of carbon neutrality targets. The results reveal that: (1) Production capacity and energy efficiency are important drivers of CO 2 emissions in ISI; (2) The emission reduction situation is not optimistic under the BAU scenario, and it is difficult to accomplish the carbon neutrality goals by 2060; (3) Under the most ideal emission reduction pathway (corresponding to the high-speed development scenario), ISI will reach its peak in 2022 with the peak value of 2143.42 MtCO 2. Compared to the peak year, the CO 2 emissions will be reduced by 654.69 MtCO 2 and 1558.61 MtCO 2 in 2030 and 2050, respectively. Moreover, the achievement of short-term and long-term emission reduction targets depends on production capacity decline and technological progress, respectively. Remote sensing technology has been frequently used to obtain information on changes in urban land cover because of its vast spatial coverage and timeliness of observation. Block-level change detection with high temporal resolution image data provides fine detail of urban changes, is suitable for urban management, and has gradually received widespread attention. High-dimensional features are required to express the heterogeneous structure of the blocks. High-dimensional high-frequency time series, namely, multivariate time series, are formed by arranging high-dimensional features chronologically. Classic change detection methods treat multivariate time series as univariate time series one by one. Few studies have analyzed the change in a multivariate time series by considering all variables as an entirety. Therefore, a graph-based segmentation for multivariate time series algorithm (MTS-GS) is proposed in this paper. Specifically, 1) we construct a similarity matrix to explore the changing patterns of multivariate time series for seasonal change, trend change, abrupt change, and noise disturbance; 2) a multivariate time series graph is defined based on the changing patterns; and 3) the corresponding graph segmentation algorithm is proposed in the paper to detect the abrupt and trend changes under noise and seasonal disturbances. Sentinel-2 images of the rapidly developing third-tier city of Luoyang, Henan province, China, are adopted to validate the algorithm. The F1-score in the spatial domain is 84.1%; the producer's and the user's accuracy in the temporal dimension are 81.8% and 80.1%, respectively. Seven change types are defined and extracted, showing the development pattern and the efficiency of land use in the city. • Over 60% extractable oil from oil-window shale is stored in the micro-mesopores. • Oil extraction has limited impacts on overmature dry shales. • Moisture contents of wet shales reduce by 7–37% after oil extraction. • Extraction increases micropore and methane adsorption capacities up to 282%. • GIP for oil-window shale can be over-estimated up to 22% by extracting the oil. The porosity and methane adsorption capacity of shale used to estimate gas in place (GIP) are affected both by moisture and oil residing in the pore structure, as well as oil naturally present from maturation, which can include contaminant drilling mud fluids used for drilling. To demonstrate the impact of extractable oil on methane adsorption capacity for both dry and moisture-equilibrated shales, two overmature shales from China (SH1, SH2) and two lower mature shales from UK (BS3, GH4) have been investigated. The oils extracted from the overmature shales (<0.5 wt% TOC) are in low yield and arise from oil-based drilling mud, while the much higher yields from the lower maturity UK shales (1.1–2.5 wt% TOC) is mainly from oil generated by maturation. After extraction, minimal changes (<5%) in total nanopore volume (<100 nm) were observed for the dry over mature shales, but significant increases (95 and 176%) were observed for the dry lower maturity shales. More than 60% of the extracted oil resides in micro and mesopores, and removal could unblock the micropore necks and enlarge the accessible meso and macropore volume. Moisture contents are lower for extracted shales, with reductions of 7–37% observed. Methane equilibrium adsorption capacities increased after oil extraction for both the dry and wet shales, especially for lower maturity shales, where increases were over 200% for the wet shales. Henry's Law was used to show that there were not significant amounts of dissolved methane in oils for the dry shales. Extracting oil from shales prior to determining the porosity and methane adsorption capacity can lead to the GIP being over-estimated for moisture equilibrated shales, particularly for oil-window shales where an overestimation of 22% was obtained for the shale investigated in this study. The Liaodong Bay Depression was shaped by the Bohai Bay rift basin (BBRB) and the Tan-Lu strike-slip fault system (TSFS) in the Cenozoic and has undergone a tectonic transition from rifting to strike-slip. Therefore, it is an ideal region to study the transition from rifting to strike-slip. Based on new 3D serial seismic data interpretation, we investigated the types and formation times of the main faults in the Liaodong Bay Depression and restored them within the palaeogeography of each evolution stage. Our results show that the Liaodong Bay Depression underwent a tectonic transition from rifting to strike-slip: (1) The mantle material upsurge caused by the Izanagi plate trapped in the mantle transition zone led to rifting of the Liaodong Bay Depression from the Palaeocene to the Eocene. (2) In the middle Eocene, the change in the subduction direction of the Pacific plate led to dextral strike-slip movement along the Tan-Lu fault zone. (3) The rifting and strike-slip in the Liaodong Bay depression are related, and the transition from rifting to strike-slip occurred from the middle Eocene to the early Oligocene. The strike-slip faults developed when rifting was weak in the Oligocene. The transition from rifting to strike-slip faulting formed oil-gas accumulation zones along the strike-slip fault zone and thus resulted in the good oil and gas exploration prospects of this area. • The Liaodong Bay Depression experienced tectonic transition from rifting to strike slip in the Paleogene. • The transition from rifting to strike-slip occurred from middle Eocene to early Oligocene in the Liaodong bay depression. • During the transition from rifting to strike-slip, strike slip faults develop when rifting is weak. • The transition from rifting to strike-slip forms oil-gas accumulation zones along the strike-slip fault zone. A putative novel mitovirus was found in isolate R1084 of the fungus Rhizoctonia cerealis, the causal agent of sharp eyespot of wheat in China. The full genome sequence of the virus was determined and analyzed. The complete cDNA sequence is 3149 nucleotides long with 59.7 % A+T content. Using either the fungal mitochondrial or universal genetic code, the viral genome was found to contain a single large open reading frame that is predicted to encode a protein of 812 amino acids with an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) domain that is conserved in the mitovirus RdRp superfamily. The amino acid sequence of the RdRp domain is only 50 % identical to the corresponding domain in Sclerotinia sclerotiorum mitovirus 11, and therefore, this virus is proposed to be a novel mitovirus, designated as Rhizoctonia cerealis mitovirus 1-R1084 (RcMV1-R1084). The XELOX regimen (capecitabine plus oxaliplatin) has been demonstrated as first-line chemotherapy for gastric cancer in China. However, the efficacy of XELOX varies in individuals. Some evidences indicate that the variable efficacy might be related to the distinct immune status not only in the tumor site but also in the systemic immune system, and further investigation is required. In this study, we collected 32 PBMC samples from 16 XELOX-treated patients with gastric cancer and analyzed the patterns of immune cells. At the end point, the proportion of CD24 hi CD27 + CD19 + B cells in patients without progression revealed a significant decrease compared with that in patients with progression, but not other immune cells, such as T cells and NK cells. Furthermore, CD19 + B cells were more sensitive to capecitabine plus oxaliplatin stimulation in vitro than other immune cells, displaying higher frequency of apoptosis in a dose-dependent way. Thus, our results suggested that the outcomes of XELOX chemotherapy were inversely correlated with peripheral B cell subsets, which might provide a more convenient method to predict gastric cancer progression of XELOX-treated patients. We probe into the key factors that possess significant effects on China’s CO2 emissions during 1997–2012 on the basis of IPAT-LMDI model. Carbon dioxide emissions are specifically decomposed into CO2 emission intensity, energy structure, energy intensity, industrial structure, economic output, and population scale effects. Results indicate that the paramount driving factors that resulted in the growth of CO2 emissions are economic output, population scale, and energy structure. In contrast, energy intensity and industrial structure generally play an outstanding role in reducing emissions. This paper constructs a new weight assessment system by introducing “contribution value-significant factor-effect coefficient” to replace “contribution value-contribution rate” in the previous literature. According to the most significant positive effect and the most negative effect from the conclusion, we point out the effective policies that can not only accelerate the target of “China’s carbon emissions per unit of GDP could be cut down by 40–45% by 2020, from 2005 levels,” but also have crucial significance on the low-carbon economic development strategy of China. Acute burn injuries are among the most devastating forms of trauma and lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Appropriate fluid resuscitation after severe burn, specifically during the first 48 hours following injury, is considered as the single most important therapeutic intervention in burn treatment. Although many formulas have been developed to estimate the required fluid amount in severe burn patients, many lines of evidence showed that patients still receive far more fluid than formulas recommend. Overresuscitation, which is known as “fluid creep,” has emerged as one of the most important problems during the initial period of burn care. If fluid titration can be personalized and automated during the resuscitation phase, more efficient burn care and outcome will be anticipated. In the present study, a dynamic urine output based infusion rate prediction model was developed and validated during the initial 48 hours in severe thermal burn adult patients. The experimental results demonstrated that the developed dynamic fluid resuscitation model might significantly reduce the total fluid volume by accurately predicting hourly urine output and has the potential to aid fluid administration in severe burn patients. The large shallow eutrophic Lake Taihu in China has long suffered from eutrophication and toxic cyanobacterial blooms. Despite considerable efforts to divert effluents from the watershed, the cyanobacterial blooms still reoccur and persist throughout summer. To mitigate cyanobacterial bloom pollution risk, a large scale integrated monitoring and forecasting system was developed, and a series of emergency response measures were instigated based on early warning. This system has been in place for 2009–2012. With this integrated monitoring system, it was found that the detectable maximum and average cyanobacterial bloom area were similar to that before drinking water crisis, indicating that poor eutrophic status and cyanobacterial bloom had persisted without significant alleviation. It also revealed that cyanobacterial bloom would occur after the intense storm, which may be associated with the increase in buoyance of cyanobacterial colonies. Although the cyanobacterial blooms had persisted during the monitoring period, there had been a reduction in frequency and intensity of the cyanobacterial bloom induced black water agglomerates (a phenomenon of algal bloom death decay to release a large amount black dissolved organic matter), and there have been no further drinking water crises. This monitoring and response strategy can reduce the cyanobacterial bloom pollution risk, but cannot reduce eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms, problems which will take decades to resolve. It is widely accepted that algal blooms are a result of eutrophication processes. Water temperature, total phosphorus and total nitrogen are the main environmental parameters impacting Chlorophyll- a (Chl a) in aquatic ecosystems. To elucidate the variability of these parameters in Lake Taihu, China, we analyzed their multi-temporal characteristics using wavelet power spectrum. We evaluated the non-stationary statistical association between algal biomass (as Chl a) and the selected environmental parameters using wavelet coherence and wavelet phase difference. Our results indicate that these variables presented periodic oscillations in frequency domain and localization along time axis. Significant 3-4 month and annual bands are identified in both algal and environmental parameters variations. Chl a responded quickly to variation in water temperature but showed a delayed response to variation in total nitrogen; it also showed a delayed response to variation in total phosphorus during 1995-1997, but responded more quickly in recent years. The intensity of oscillation power in frequency domain resulted in non-stationary statistical association, and the phase difference in time domain resulted in time-lag correlations between Chl a and the selected environmental indices. We assessed the association between tea consumption and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) using INTERHEART China data. Cases (n = 2909) and controls (n = 2947) were randomly selected and frequency matched by age and sex. Participants who drank tea ≥4 cups/d had a significantly higher risk of AMI than tea nondrinkers; odds ratio (OR) was 1.29 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03-1.61) compared with tea nondrinkers. A similar trend was found in green tea drinkers; OR was 1.52 (95% CI: 1.13-2.05) in the participants who drank 3 cups/d and 1.73 (95% CI: 1.35-2.22) in the participants who drank ≥4 cups/d compared with tea nondrinkers. We also found that green tea consumption had a greater effect on females; OR was 2.80 (95% CI: 1.43-5.50) in females. China is now the world's largest user of coal, and also has the highest greenhouse gas emissions associated with the mining and use of coal. In the mining sector, the interests of workforce safety coincide with those of GHG (greenhouse gas) management. While the traditional approach to ensuring workforce safety in coal mines was simply to vent the hazardous gases to the atmosphere, thus increasing GHG emissions, recent innovations have seen elements of CCS (carbon capture and storage) being used to simultaneously ensure workforce safety and minimization of GHG emissions. The Haishiwan Coalfield represents a particularly challenging environment for applying this approach, as the coal-bearing strata host both oil shales and a naturally-occurring CO 2 reservoir, disturbance of which could both imperil workers and lead to elevated GHG emissions. A low-carbon, CCS-based model of gas management developed in the Haishiwan Coalfield offers attractive lessons for application to other coal mines, within and beyond China. This approach achieves multiple benefits: energy production, enhanced workforce safety and minimization of GHG emissions. Defining the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary is a controversy in stratigraphic study of the world. It has been widely accepted that this boundary can be defined at the bottom of Berriasian in Tethys, with the appearance of the ammonite Berriasella jacobi dating to ca. 145 Ma. However, it is difficult for the widespread terrestrial deposits in China to correlate with the international standard of marine facies. The Somanakamura Group in Japan is represented by a succession of marine-continental transitional strata. It provides a bridge of marine and nonmarine stratigraphic correlation. The ammonite and radiolarian fossils preserved in this group suggest an age from Bajocian to early Valanginian. The J-K boundary was defined in or atop the Tomizawa Formation of the group according to the ammonite data. The present authors study the fossil spores and pollen newly found from the Tomizawa and Koyamada formations. Three assemblages have been recognized. They are Assemblage 1 (Cyathidites-Classopollis) from the upper part of the Tomizawa Formation, Assemblage 2 {Cyathidites-Jiaohepollis) from the lower part of the Koyamada Formation, and Assemblage 3 {Cyathidites-Spheripollemtes-Ephedripites) from the middle to upper part of the Koyamada Formation. With the reference of ammonite evidence, the J-K boundary can be defined between Assemblage 1 and Assemblage 2. This palynological J-K boundary can be correlated with that of terrestrial sequence in China. However, local biostratigrapby imply that the continental J-K boundary in China is of 135 or 137 Ma age. It has a considerable discrepancy from the marine standard. Biogeographically, the distribution pattern of spores and pollen in southern China is in accordance with that in the Somanakamura Group, which parallels the Tuchengzi Formation in northeastern China. By the palynological correlation between the Somanakamura Group and the strata in southern China, and then with the sequence in northeastern China, it is suggested that the continental J-K boundary is located in the Tuchengzi Formation. The recent sporadic infections of humans in China with previously unrecognized avian influenza A virus of the H7N9 subtype (A(H7N9)) have caused concern. The aim is to find out the epidemiological and molecular analysis of the PB1-F2 proteins in H7N9 influenza viruses, in Jiangsu province. Sequences were obtained from GISAID database. Data were analyzed by using Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis software and Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method. From March 1, 2013, to May 31, 2014, 53 patients were confirmed to be infected with the H7N9 virus; one was a retrospective case in Jiangsu province. 38 sequences of PB1 in H7N9 of Jiangsu were obtained from the GISAID online and were then divided into three lineages. Of these sequences, 4 sequences and 3 sequences encode an N-terminally truncated PB1-F2 (52aa)polypeptide and C-terminally truncated PB1-F2 (76aa) polypeptide, respectively. The remaining sequences encode a full-length PB1-F2 (90aa). We estimated a mean evolutionary rate of 3.053 × 10−3 subs/site/year (95% HPD: 2.021 × 10−3–4.051 × 10−3). The site-by-site analysis of selection pressure analysis revealed positively and negatively (12, 3), respectively, selected sites. Fomitiporella caviphila L.W. Zhou (Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota) sp. nova is described and illustrated from eastern China. Its perennial, resupinate and inseparable basidiocarps, thin subiculum, stratified tubes, a dimitic hyphal system, lack of setae, and brown basidiospores fit well to the current concept of Fomitiporella. The new species resembles F. cavicola by inhabiting cavities of living logs and having thick basidiocarps, but it differs by the lighter pore surface, smaller pores and smaller basidiospores. In DNA analysis, F. caviphila is nested within the clade including the generic type, F. umbrinella. As an efficient and energy conservation technology, heat pumps working with R22, which are scheduled to be phased out by Montreal Protocol, are widely used in China at present. The global deteriorating ecology environment would accelerate the phase-out time of R22 in developing countries. Therefore, as a matter of urgency, an eco-friendly substitute should be investigated in order to replace R22. Under this context, and with a consideration of the environmental protection, R744/R161 mixture refrigerant is proposed. R744/R161 mixture refrigerant's condensation pressure is reduced and its flammability and explosivity are suppressed. A thermodynamic model is developed, and under the given working conditions, the performances of subcritical heat pump system using R744/R161 mixture of variable mass fraction are discussed and compared with those of the R22 system. The optimal mass fraction of R744/R161 is given, which corresponds to a maximal heating coefficient of performance. The genus Scoparia from the Hailuogou Glacier area in the south-eastern fringe of the Tibetan Plateau of south-western China is studied, nine species are revealed by combining DNA barcoding (658 bp of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, COI) and morphology. Studies show that Scoparia species from the Hailuogou Glacier area are 37.5% as many as all the previously known congeners in China. Six species are described as new to science: S coparia simplicissima Li sp. nov., S coparia tribulosa Li sp. nov., S coparia longispina Li sp. nov., S coparia gibbosa Li sp. nov., S coparia globosa Li sp. nov., and S coparia annulata Li sp. nov. The female of Scoparia metaleucalis is described for the first time herein. All species are either diagnosed or described and illustrated, and a map of China showing the topography and localities where Scoparia species are recorded is also provided, including the species number of all the recorded localities. The results reveal the exceptional species diversity of Scoparia from the Hailuogou Glacier area, as well as demonstrate that the integration of DNA barcoding and morphological approaches is highly effective for indentifying scopariine moths in the Hailougou glacier area. Objective: Severe preeclampsia is a serious threat for pregnant women and fetuses. The complications of severe preeclampsia greatly affect perinatal outcome. This study aimed to investigate the complication and delivery mode of Chinese pregnant women with severe preeclampsia, and analyze the change in these aspects in the past decades. Methods: Clinical data of 1713 pregnant women with severe preeclampsia were collected and analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups: early period (1985-1997) and later period (1998-2010). Results: The complications for severe preeclampsia included preterm birth, fetal distress, postpartum hemorrhage, fetal growth restriction (FGR). Compared to early period, the rates of preterm birth, FGR, oligohydramnios, abnormal pregnancy outcome increased while the rates of fetal distress, postpartum hemorrhage and eclampsia decreased in later period. The rate of cesarean section was 73.073% in the early period and increased to 88.258% in the later period. Accordingly, the rate of natural childbirth, forceps extraction, vacuum extraction and breech extraction decreased in the later period. Conclusions: Our data provide important information on the complication and mode of delivery in Chinese women with severe preeclampsia in the past decades, which may be helpful for clinical management of severe preeclampsia in Chinese women. Understanding the impacts and extent of both climate change and human activities on ecosystems is crucial to sustainable development. With low anti-interference ability, arid and semi-arid ecosystems are particularly sensitive to disturbances from both climate change and human activities. We investigated how and to what extent climate variation and human activities influenced major indicators that are related to ecosystem functions and conditions in the past decades in Xinjiang, a typical arid and semi-arid region in China. We analyzed the changing trends of evapotranspiration (ET), gross primary productivity (GPP) and leaf area index (LAI) derived from the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite product and the Breathing Earth System Simulator (BESS) model in Xinjiang for different climate zones. We separated and quantified the contributions of climate forcing and human activities on the trends of the studied ecosystem indicators using the residual analysis method for different climate zones in Xinjiang. The results show that GPP and LAI increased and ET decreased from 2001 to 2015 in Xinjiang. Factors that dominate the changes in ecosystem indicators vary considerably across different climate zones. Precipitation plays a positive role in impacting vegetation indicators in arid and hyper-arid zones and temperature has a negative correlation with both GPP and LAI in hyper-arid zones in Xinjiang. Results based on residual analysis indicate that human activities could account for over 72% of variation in the changes in each ecosystem indicator. Human activities have large impacts on each vegetation indicator change in hyper-arid and arid zones and their relative contribution has a mean value of 79%. This study quantifies the roles of climate forcing and human activities in the changes in ecosystem indicators across different climate zones, suggesting that human activities largely influence ecosystem processes in the arid and semi-arid regions of Xinjiang in China. Under the dual policy targets of carbon emission peaking (CEP) and industrial green transformation (IGT) in China, where a top-down policy implementation is usually adopted, a more integrative planning mode needs to be constructed for greening industrial development. This paper proposes a technical framework to tackle the weakness faced when integrating IGT-associated issues with CEP factors during the development of IGT options, with an application in the Hohhot–Baotou–Ordos–Yulin (HBOY) city cluster. A CEP-IGT model was built to portray the effects of seven selected indicators on industrial carbon emissions, and help develop six options by defining the transformation strengths of HBOY's energy-intensive industrial system. Particularly, the CEP times and volumes were employed as the criteria for evaluating the IGT options. We found that the regional CEP goal will not be accomplished by even 2035 under the business-as-usual scenario. To halt the emission growth trend will rely much on the structural factors of energy mix and industrial output, which were also determinants of the IGT performance. Option 3, representing a moderate level transformation, was the preferred IGT plan, reaching a peak volume of 255.27 MtCO 2 eq·a−1 in 2026. The preferred plan will result in the replacement of at least 14% of the coal used in thermal power by renewable energy, and an increase in industrial coal-use efficiency by 32.02%. Policy measures need to be implemented to cap the total industrial coal consumption to no more than 2494 Mt and sustain an industrial growth by developing lower-energy or carbon-intensive industries. By 2030, the intensity and volume of industrial carbon emissions will reach 1.89 tCO 2 eq·10,000 CNY−1 and 224.85 MtCO 2 eq·a−1, respectively. This CEP-IGT progress will benefit the goal of being carbon neutral. However, most studies have investigated infant and parent factors in relation to child EF separately and included only mothers from Western samples. The current study examined whether both infant attention at 4 months and parental sensitivity at 4 and 14 months were related to infant EF (i.e., inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility) at 14 months among 124 Dutch and 63 Chinese first-time mothers and fathers and their infants. Findings revealed that parental sensitivity at 4 months was not correlated with infant EF abilities at 14 months. However, infant attention at 4 months was significantly related to 14-month working memory, but not to inhibition and cognitive flexibility. Maternal sensitivity at 14 months was significantly related to 14-month inhibition, but not to working memory and cognitive flexibility. No country differences were found in the relation among 4-month infant attention, parental sensitivity, and EF outcomes. Results show that both infant and parent factors are associated with early EF development and that these correlates of early EF skills may be similar in Western and non-Western samples. The emergence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in animals is an increasing concern for the agriculture and public health. A four-years (2016) successional study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial resistant profiles and molecular characterizations of the livestock-associated MRSA (LA-MRSA) from animal farms or slaughterhouses in Chongqing, China. A total of 1667 samples were collected from 2013 to 2016 in different animal farms and hog markets. LA-MRSA were isolated and subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing and whole genome sequencing (WGS). S. aureus was detected at a ratio of 3.7% (n = 62), in which 18 isolates were identified as MRSA. All the S. aureus isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR) with the resistance to at least four drugs; however, none of those isolates was resistant to linezolid, vancomycin, or nitrofurantoin. The resistance was more obvious in the pig-associated S. aureus isolates than the strains associated with chickens or cows. The majority of multilocus sequence typing (MLST) types of the MRSA isolates were ST239, subsequently ST59, ST9, and ST630. Among these isolates, 18 MRSA possessed SCC mec type Ⅲ (n = 10), Ⅳa (n = 4), Ⅻ (n = 3) and Ⅴ(n = 1). Multiple spa types were also detected in the isolates, such as 899, 437, 30, 421, 969, 37, and 4549. Large-scale afforestation can combat desertification, provide ecosystem services, and mitigate climate change. However, it can also have negative effects on the hydrological cycle and water budget, and thus on water security in dryland regions depending on the afforestation strategy used. Currently, the effects of different afforestation strategies on soil moisture dynamics, evapotranspiration (ET), and water budget at the stand scale are unclear. In this study, we investigated the water budget in two poplar stands, one planted using a low-coverage-mode shelterbelt (LCMS) strategy and the other planted using a conventional strategy (control). Deep drainage (DP), as an indicator of water budget, was estimated using a Hydrus-1D model calibrated with the observed soil moisture at different soil depths (across 0–200 cm) during the growing seasons in 2016, 2017, and 2019. The average DP in the LCMS stand was 107.0–149.6 mm, accounting for 36.5–42.4% of the rainfall occurring during the growing seasons, which was slightly higher than that in the control stand containing younger trees at a higher density. However, DP was more spatially heterogenous in the LCMS stand compared with in the control stand. Specifically, in the LCMS stand, the inter-canopy DP was 195.3–237.5 mm, accounting for 66.6–69.7% of the rainfall, whereas the under-canopy DP was only 18.7–65.0 mm, accounting for 6.4–18.4% of the rainfall during the corresponding period. Structural equation modeling indicated that, on a daily scale, soil moisture had the greatest effect on DP, followed by precipitation and soil saturated hydraulic conductivity. Other climate factors (global radiation, air temperature, vapor pressure deficit and wind speed) and vegetation structure parameters (leaf area index and rooting depth) affected ET, which had a significantly negative relationship with DP. These results help explain the effects of plantation strategy on the water budget, with important implications for artificial forest management, ecological restoration, and protection of local water resources in water-limited environments. The distribution of 17 Y-chromosome short tandem repeat (STR) loci, included in the AmpF l STR®Yfiler™ amplification kit, were analyzed in six different samplings (N = 878) from Sichuan, China. Haplotype diversity and discrimination capacity (DC) values were calculated. Pairwise Rst values were evaluated in AMOVA analysis and visualized through multidimensional scaling (MDS). A total of 547 unique haplotypes were detected. The observed haplotype diversity and discrimination capacity were 0.9995 and 0.7745, respectively. The homogeneity of Sichuan Han population was detected when microareas were analyzed. This population exhibited no significant genetic difference to both of the minorities in reference databases, Mongolian and Manchu, which had been through mass ethnic amalgamation with Sichuan Han population in history. Nitrogen (N) deposition has increased significantly globally since the industrial revolution. Previous studies on the response of gaseous emissions to N deposition have shown controversial results, pointing to the system-specific effect of N addition. Here we conducted an N addition experiment in a temperate natural forest in northeastern China to test how potential changes in N deposition alter soil N2O emission and its sources from nitrification and denitrification. Soil N2O emission was measured using closed chamber method and a separate incubation experiment using acetylene inhibition method was carried out to determine denitrification fluxes and the contribution of nitrification and denitrification to N2O emissions between Jul. and Oct. 2012. An NH4NO3 addition of 50 kg N/ha/yr significantly increased N2O and N2 emissions, but their “pulse emission” induced by N addition only lasted for two weeks. Mean nitrification-derived N2O to denitrification-derived N2O ratio was 0.56 in control plots, indicating higher contribution of denitrification to N2O emissions in the study area, and this ratio was not influenced by N addition. The N2O to (N2+N2O) ratio was 0.41–0.55 in control plots and was reduced by N addition at one sampling time point. Based on this short term experiment, we propose that N2O and denitrification rate might increase with increasing N deposition at least by the same fold in the future, which would deteriorate global warming problems. Despite many recent advances in genotype characterization of Enterocytozoon bieneusi worldwide and the exploration of the extent of cross-species transmission of microsporidiosis between humans and animals, the epidemiology of this neglected disease in China is poorly understood. In this study, a very high prevalence (60.3%; 94/156) of E. bieneusi infections in farmed pigs in Jilin province was detected by PCR of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS). DNA sequence analysis of 88 E. bieneusi–positive specimens identified 12 distinct genotypes (11 known: CHN7, CS-1, CS-4, CS-6, EbpA, EbpB, EbpC, EbpD, EBITS3, G, and Henan-I; one novel: CS-9). Frequent appearance of mixed genotype infections was seen in the study animals. Weaned (74.6%; 53/71) or pre-weaned (68.8%; 22/32) pigs have infection rates significantly higher than growing pigs (35.8%; 19/53) (p<0.01). Likewise, E. bieneusi was detected in 2 of 45 sheep fecal specimens (4.4%) in Heilongjiang province, belonging to the known genotype BEB6. Genotypes EbpA, EbpC, EbpD, and Henan-I examined herein have been documented in the cases of human infections and BEB6, EbpA, EbpC, and EbpD in wastewater in central China. Infections of EbpA and EbpC in humans were also reported in other areas of the world. The other known genotypes (CHN7, CS-1, CS-4, CS-6, EBITS3, EbpB, and G) and the new genotype CS-9 were genetically clustered into a group of existing E. bieneusi genotypes with zoonotic potential. Despite the advances in defining Enterocytozoon bieneusi genotypes worldwide, rare genotypic surveys have been documented on this ubiquitous pathogenic protozoan in mammals in China, especially the role of pigs in zoonotic transmission of microsporidiosis remains unclear. In this study, the distribution of E. bieneusi genotypes in 113 duodenal mucosal specimens of pigs with acute diarrhea from 15 cities in northeast China was determined by PCR and DNA sequence analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer. The organism was detected in 51 (45.1 %) pigs from 12 cities, with infection rates of the nursery pigs (21/33, 63.6 %) significantly higher than the preweaned (25/61, 41.0 %; P < 0.05) and the growing (5/19, 26.3 %; P < 0.01) ones. E. bieneusi belongs to nine known human-pathogenic genotypes (D, EbpA, EbpC, EbpD, H, Henan-I, Henan-III, Henan-IV, and O) and eight new genotypes (CS-1 to CS-8). Genotypes D, EbpA, EbpC, EbpD, Henan-I, Henan-III, and Henan-IV have been found in human infections and D, EbpA, EbpC, and EbpD in wastewater in central China. The new genotypes were genetically clustered into a group of existing E. bieneusi genotypes with zoonotic potential. Considering the discovery of a high prevalence and wide genetic diversity of E. bieneusi zoonotic strains in pigs in northeast China and the co-occurrence of seven known genotypes in pigs and humans and four in pigs and wastewater, pigs probably served as a reservoir for human microsporidiosis and an important source of water contamination in China. Physical activity (PA) during leisure time has been inversely associated with cardiovascular disease risk in the Western populations. We evaluated PA at work and leisure time in relation to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Chinese population. We conducted a hospital-based case–control study. The cases had first AMI (n = 2909). The controls (n = 2947) were matched to the cases in age and sex. The odds ratios (ORs) of leisure-time PA for strenuous exercise compared to mainly sedentary was 0.74 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.61-0.90) and for moderate exercise it was 0.96 (95% CI: 0.85-1.08). Multivariate adjustment did not substantially alter the association. The ORs of work-related PA for heavy PA compared to mainly sedentary was 1.44 (95% CI: 1.06-1.94), for climbing and lifting was 1.00 (95% CI: 0.77-.30), and for walking was 0.90 (95%CI: 0.75-1.07). Lake Bosten is the largest inland freshwater lake in China and plays a key role in the local arid-area ecosystem. This study focuses on the dynamics of water salinity of Lake Bosten in the past 55 years (1955-2009) and intends to quantify the associations between the water salinity and the magnitudes of water level, inflow, outflow, total wastewater drainage into the lake, including industrial and residential wastewater. Correlation analysis reveals that the water salinity has strong associations with those sue factors (R = -0.810, -0.510, -0.844, 0.903, 0.855, and 0.685, respectively). We predict that water level, inflow and water salinity of Lake Bosten will decline in 2010-2019. This study recommends a reduction in salt input to the Bosten River by reducing industrial wastewater discharge along the river and the development of clean production technology. Hypervirulent (hypermucoviscous) Klebsiella pneumoniae strains constitute an increasing proportion of the K. pneumoniae strains isolated from patients in China. Disturbingly, the frequency of antimicrobial-resistant strains identified among these isolates has increased in recent years.Background. New hypervirulent variants of Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKP) are emerging globally, most of which exhibit antimicrobial susceptibility.Methods. A retrospective study was conducted in 88 patients with cultures positive for K. pneumoniae hospitalized in the Beijing You'an Hospital from April 2010 to June 2012. The clinical and molecular data of the hvKP isolates (defined as string test positive) were compared with those of the classic K. pneumoniae (cKP) isolates.Results. Overall, 33.0% (29/88) of K. pneumoniae isolates were hvKP. Univariate analysis revealed the following risk factors for hvKP: virulence gene rmpA (odds ratio [OR], 16.92 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 4.842–59.145]), capsule antigens K1 (OR, 3.355 [95% CI, 1.153–9.768]) and K2 (OR, 9.280 [95% CI, 0.987–87.250]), alcoholic hepatitis (OR, 7.435 [95% CI, 1.397–39.572]), liver abscess (OR, 9.068 [95% CI, 1.747–47.061]), metastatic infection (OR, 2.752 [95% CI, 1.100–6.886]), community-acquired infection (OR, 10.432 [95% CI, 3.623–30.033]), sputum isolation (OR, 0.312 [95% CI, .095–1.021]), and HIV infection (<0.001 [not applicable]). Multivariate analysis implicated rmpA (OR, 17.398 [95% CI, 4.224–71.668]) and community-acquired infection (OR, 6.844 [95% CI, 1.905–24.585]) as independent risk factors. The proportion of hvKP isolates increased from April to December 2010, January to September 2011, and October 2011 to June 2012 (to 25.5%, 26.7%, and 54.5%, respectively). Resistance to 14 of 19 tested antimicrobials was found to be significantly greater in cKP compared to hvKP. Importantly, resistance to all the tested antimicrobials, except carbapenems and amikacin, was observed in a proportion of hvKP strains, 17% (5/29) of which expressed extended-spectrum β-lactamase. Furthermore, antimicrobial resistance in hvKP strains increased over time.Conclusions. HvKP strains are being isolated from patients in China with increasing frequency and constitute an increasing proportion of K. pneumoniae strains, indicating an increasing propensity for the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance. The Longmenshan fault that ruptured during the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan (China) earthquake was drilled to a depth of 1200 m, and fault rocks including those in the 2008 earthquake slip zone were recovered at a depth of 575-595 m. We report laboratory strength measurements and microstructural observations from samples of slip zone fault rocks at deformation conditions expected for coseismic slip at borehole depths. Results indicate that the Longmenshan fault at this locality is extremely weak at seismic slip rates. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that graphite was formed along localized slip zones in the experimental products, similar to the occurrence of graphite in the natural principal slip zone of the 2008 Wenchuan rupture. We surmise that graphitization occurred due to frictional heating of carbonaceous minerals. Because graphitization was associated with strong dynamic weakening in the experiments, we further infer that the Longmenshan fault was extremely weak at borehole depths during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, and that enrichment of graphite along localized slip zones could be used as an indicator of transient frictional heating during seismic slip in the upper crust. Background: Epidemics of HFMD are elevated every year globally, especially in mainland China. The disease now presents as an increasing threat to public health worldwide. Methods: Five hundred and seventy-one EV71-infected HFMD patients in Beijing You'an Hospital were grouped by disease severity: Mild (no severe complication) (n = 221), and Severe group (complicated with brainstem encephalitis (BE), and/or pulmonary edema (PE) (n = 350)). Clinical and laboratory findings and levels of 7 serum cytokines were analyzed. Results: Univariate analysis showed that (RR)>26/min (p<0.001), age<4 yo (p = 0.001), GLU>8.3 mmol/L (p = 0.008), CL<98 mmol/L (p = 0.026), and WBC>1.2×109/L (p = 0.040) were associated with severe cases. Results of multivariate analysis indicated five independent risk factors (RR>26/min (p<0.001), Age<4 yo (p<0.001), GLU>8.3 mmol/L (p = 0.011), LYM>40% (p = 0.010), and ALT>40 U/L (p = 0.045)). In addition to single-factor analysis, we further analyzed the use of different combinations of risk factors. “GLU>8.3 and CL<98 and RR>26” (confidence ration (CR) = 100%) is the top indicator, followed by “ALT>40 and LYM>40% and RR>26 and Age<4 yo” (CR = 92.9%). Serum levels of IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, IFNγ, GM-CSF, and TNFα were higher in severe cases than in mild cases. A new evaluation scoring system by scoring each risk factor 1 and independent risk factor 2 was developed for early identification of severe HFMD cases. Conclusions: Five independent risk factors, along with indicative combinations of risk factors, for severe cases were identified, and a scoring system was created to facilitate the use of indicators for early medical intervention. Phellinopsis was recently erected for P. conchata, the generic type, and P. occidentalis. Later on P. junipericola and P. resupinata were described as new species. In this study, more specimens of Phellinopsis were examined and a phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences was carried out. Phellinopsis helwingiae L.W. Zhou & W.M. Qin sp. nova is described and illustrated from Sichuan Province, southwest China as the fifth species in this genus. In addition, information on the hosts of P. junipericola is elaborated. Tea is a popular drink around the world. It is also one of the sources of metal intake. The objectives of this study were to assess chromium (Cr) intake from popular green, oolong, black and Pu-erh tea. In total, 128 Chinese made teas were analysed and concentration differences among four types of tea were explored. Black tea contained highest total Cr, which varied between 0.63 and 17.60 mg/kg. The lowest content was found in the green tea samples, between 0.26 and 1.30 mg/kg. Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in black tea were higher than in other types of tea. Cr(III), Cr(VI) and total Cr concentration in different tea infusions were also analysed. The results suggest that drinking tea is an effective way for Cr intake and the risk of adults and children being chronically intoxicated by tea infusions is low. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Human Enterovirus 71 and Coxsackie A16 have caused many outbreaks in the last decade in mainland China, resulting in thousands of fatal cases. Seroepidemiology which provides important information to document population immunity is rare in China. Methodology/Principal Findings: A cross sectional study of Enterovirus 71 (EV71) and Coxsackie A16 (CA16) seroprevalence was carried out in Guangdong, China, pre- and post- the 2010 hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) epidemic period. The levels of EV71 and CA16 specific antibodies were evaluated by a microneutralization test and the geometric mean titer (GMT) was calculated and compared. Our results indicated frequent infection by EV71 and CA16 in Guangdong before the 2010 epidemic. Only EV71 neutralizing antibody but not CA16 seroprevalence was significantly increased after the 2010 HFMD epidemic. Children less than 3 years old especially those aged 2 years showed the lowest positive rates for EV71 and CA16 NA before epidemic and the most significantly increased EV71 seroprevalence after epidemic. CA16 GMT values declined after the 2010 epidemic. Conclusions: These results indicate EV71 was the major pathogen of HFMD in Guangdong during the 2010 epidemic. Unique plateau wetlands in China provide essential ecosystem functions and services and influence the health, environment and security of the downstream regions. In recent years, these plateau wetlands have experienced significant anthropogenic disturbance, but studies that evaluate the effects of such disturbance on ecological stability are rare. Our study tested how three typical types of human-related activities affect plant richness and ecological stability in Napahai plateau wetland, Shangri-La, China. The results showed that the anthropogenic disturbance had a direct effect on richness, and an indirect effect on stability mediated by richness. Anthropogenic disturbance did not alter the positive relationship between plant richness and community stability, and the stabilizing effect of richness could be explained by statistical averaging, overyielding effect, and component population stability. Our study complements previous studies that tested the richness-stability relationships in synthesized assemblages with richness specifically manipulated and studies that introduced mowing treatment to mimic real anthropogenic disturbance. The results further suggest that necessary steps, such as anthropogenic disturbance mitigation and plant richness conservation, are urgently required for maintaining healthy plateau wetlands and for sustaining their ecosystem functions and services.
