This paper contributes to the growing body of work on precarious labor, immigration, and social gerontology by examining the racialization of precarious employment across the life course. In particular, the authors examine the impact of precarious employment and discrimination among racialized older immigrants in Canada. Racialized older immigrants are more likely to be disadvantaged by the effects of lifelong intersections of economic and social discrimination rooted in racialization, gender, ageism, and socio-economic status. Drawing from a narrative-photovoice project that focused on the life stories of older immigrants living in Quebec and British Columbia, this paper presents the in-depth stories and photographs of four participants to highlight how intersections of race, gender, age, immigration status, and ability shape and structure experiences of aging, labor market participation and caregiving relationships. Simple Summary: Early detection of adventive and potentially invasive insects that may threaten the health of forests is essential for their successful management in Canada and the world at large. To that end, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) conducts annual surveys at sites with high risk of adventive species introductions (e.g., ports, industrial zones, disposal sites for solid wood packaging material) using semiochemical-baited traps and also by rearing insects from trunk sections collected from stressed trees. We report 31 new Canadian provincial records of beetle species detected in surveys conducted from 2011 to 2021, including 13 new records for Canada and 9 species adventive to North America. Nine of the new Canadian records were native North American species previously detected only south of the border. All but three species belong to the Curculionidae family ("snout beetles") and most of these were in the subfamily Scolytinae (bark and ambrosia beetles). Rearing of insects from trunk sections of stressed trees accounted for two new species records whereas trapping accounted for the remainder. These surveys not only assist our efforts to manage forest insects by documenting new species introductions and apparent range expansions but also increase our knowledge of biodiversity. The arrival and establishment of adventive, invasive forest insects are a threat to the health, diversity, and productivity of forests in Canada and the world at large, and their early detection is essential for successful eradication and management. For that reason, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) conducts annual surveys at high risk sites such as international ports and freight terminals, industrial zones, and disposal sites for solid wood packaging material using two methods: (1) semiochemical-baited traps deployed in a total of about 63–80 sites per year in British Columbia (BC), Ontario (ON), Quebec (QC), New Brunswick (NB), Nova Scotia (NS), and Newfoundland and Labrador (NL); and (2) rearing of insects from bolts collected from stressed trees and incubated in modified shipping containers in four cities (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax). We report 31 new Canadian provincial records of Coleoptera from surveys conducted in 2011–2021, including 13 new records for Canada and 9 species adventive to North America (indicated by †). Nine of the new Canadian records were native North American species previously detected only south of the border. All but three species belong to the Curculionidae family and most of these were in the subfamily Scolytinae. We explored the experiences of working-age and older adults with acquired vision impairment who pursued braille rehabilitation training, and the facilitators and barriers they encountered throughout this process. Semi-structured interviews of up to 90 min in length were conducted with 14 participants from across Canada who learned braille between the ages of 33 and 67 (Mdn = 46). Transcripts were analyzed by two researchers using interpretive phenomenological analysis. A variety of personal, social and institutional factors characterize the adult braille learning experience. Among these, participants highlight the role of prior identity and experience, the impact of access to resources and the cost of materials and devices needed to maintain braille skills. Findings also emphasize invisible barriers, including the role of societal perceptions towards braille, the level of support provided by family and friends, and the influence of unconscious biases towards braille and aging held by both adult learners and those around them. These findings provide important context to improve policies and practice in adult braille rehabilitation. As the prevalence of age-related vision impairment continues to increase, it will become imperative to understand the unique needs of working-age and older adults with acquired vision impairment who pursue braille. This study is one of the first to explore the experiences of working-age and older adults with acquired visual impairment who pursue braille rehabilitation training. Rehabilitation professionals must take into account prior learning and reading experiences which may shape the braille learning process. Family members require greater access to resources and support during the training process. There is a significant need for public education to address societal misconceptions about braille and blindness that can lead to a reluctance to use braille. This paper asks the question, 'What is the current status of provincial moral education polices in the five Canadian provinces which have mandated or optional moral education programs: Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta?' It then offers a response through an analysis of the relevant policies in those provinces that draws upon Sanger and Osguthorpe's Moral Work of Teaching Framework. It concludes with the finding that there is a lack of clarity, consistency, and coherence in those policies which could be addressed through their ongoing examination, combined with the development of standardized terminology, and clearly stated definitions and assumptions. Research on racialized older immigrants does not fully acknowledge the interplay between the life course experiences of diverse populations and the structural conditions that shape these experiences. Our research team has developed the intersectional life course perspective to enhance researchers’ capacity to take account of the cumulative effects of structural discrimination as people experience it throughout the life course, the meanings that people attribute to those experiences, and the implications these have on later life. Here we propose an innovative methodological approach that combines life story narrative and photovoice methods in order to operationalize the intersectional life course. We piloted this approach in a study of the everyday stories of aging among diverse immigrant older adults in two distinct Canadian provinces with the goals of enhancing capacity to account for both context and story and engaging with participants and stakeholders from multiple sectors in order to influence change. Background: There is inconsistency across child development and care literature in operationalizing serious play‐related injury and also a lack of understanding of how mothers and fathers conceptualize serious play‐related injury. The current study explores parents' perspectives of their 2‐ to 7‐year‐old children's serious play‐related injuries in urban and rural areas of British Columbia and Québec, Canada, and provides an urban/rural and gender analysis of the results. Methods: We conducted semistructured interviews with 41 mothers and 63 fathers from 57 families, a total of 104 participants, in urban and rural locations in British Columbia and Québec, Canada. We used a social constructionist approach to the research and reflexive thematic analysis to construct themes from participant responses and to inform the consequent categorizations of serious play‐related injury. Results: The results indicate four categories of parents' conceptualizations of serious play‐related injury: (a) injury requiring medical intervention, (b) injury resulting in head trauma, (c) injury resulting in debilitation, and (d) broken bones. Conclusions: Child development and care advocates can use these categories to strengthen their communications with parents and to improve understanding of parents' conceptualizations of children's serious play‐related injury. The impact of large-scale, 'mass' community-based sport, and physical activity (PA) events on population PA has yet to be established. The enhancement of organizational capacity to support health promotion initiatives is one mechanism through which such events may be helpful. Sports Day in Canada (SDIC) is an annual, nation-wide event celebrating the role of sport within communities and promoting sport participation. Beginning in 2010, thousands of Canadian sport and PA organizations have created SDIC events each year. The objective of this study was to examine the types of organizations who participate in SDIC and to determine if and how these organizations benefit from hosting an event. Online surveys of event organizers (2010 to 2013 SDIC) were conducted. Descriptive analyses identified organization and event characteristics, and one-way ANOVAs across time assessed event organizers' perceptions related to their overall satisfaction, benefits obtained, and challenges faced while participating in SDIC. Findings showed that organizations were mainly from the provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec, worked with children and youth, and registered an event that was a tournament or school based. There was a significant increase in overall satisfaction [F(3, 996) = 27.26, p <.001] and benefits obtained [F(3, 1000) = 18.36, p <.001] across all four years of SDIC. One main benefit reported by organizations was an increased awareness and interest among community members in sport program(s) offered by their organization. This qualitative study explores narrative interviews of street-involved individuals with mental health issues and reflects on how they speak to experiences of both helpful and unhelpful social and mental health service provisions, and the disconnections between what they articulate as needing, and what services and supports they are able to receive. The article draws on and contributes to the field of peer research as the authors use lived experience of homelessness and/or mental health issues to inform both the approach to and analysis of the narratives. This study confirms that participants find the emerging, recovery-oriented structures of service provision more helpful than the dominant, biomedical structures, but that there is a continued disconnect in accessing emerging structure service deliveries. Like the Canadian landscape and culture, the status of professional regulation for counselling and psychotherapy is a mosaic reflecting the unique cultural, linguistic and contextual realities of Canada. Statutory regulation in Canada is constitutionally a provincial/territorial matter. In the past five years, a major movement towards professional regulation has emerged. The authors describe the variable status of regulation, focusing on three provinces: Quebec, Nova Scotia and Ontario. They explore the federal Agreement of Internal Trade, designed to facilitate inter-provincial/territorial mobility of regulated professionals. Finally, the authors summarise national research and development activities of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association that enhance the pan-Canadian mobility of practitioners and support shared professional understandings. These activities range from bilingual, national validation of competencies, definitions, titles and scopes of practice to symposia and an entry-to-practice competency assessment. The total phenolic composition (TPC) and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of eleven strawberry genotypes selected from the AAFC breeding program (BC2-72-17, BC2-90-43, BC96-33-4 and BC98-49-34 from British Columbia; and APF937-1, APF939-71, LL981-24, LL9819-14, LL982-14, LL0220-10 and SJ9332-7 from Quebec) were evaluated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. TPC and TAC values of these genotypes were compared to those of four commercially grown cultivars ('Chambly,' 'Kent,' 'Veestar' and 'Yamaska') and the effects on fruit quality and shelf life were studied. Several groups of phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins, flavonols, hydroxycinnamic, ellagic and benzoic acids, were identified and quantified by HPLC. Significant variation of TPC was observed between genotypes, and anthocyanins were found to be the predominant phenolic group, contributing to 79.2% of the TPC. A significant correlation (r = 0.96) was observed between TPC and anthocyanin content. BC2-72-17 had the highest anthocyanin content and differed significantly from the other genotypes. Although the highest TPC (2123.8 μg g-1) was found in BC2-72-17, this genotype did not have the highest antioxidant capacity. The highest TAC (2259.0 μg g-1) was found in BC2-90-43, indicating that other phenolics may have made a greater contribution than anthocyanins to the high TAC. At room temperature, LL0220-10, SJ9332-7 and 'Yamaska' had a three-day shelf life, while it was only two days for all other genotypes. There was a negative correlation between shelf life and ellagic acids, flavonol and anthocyanin levels but this relationship was not significant (p > 0.0.). The fruit soluble solids content (SSC) and titratable acidity (TA) varied between genotypes. 'Veestar' and LL981-24 had the highest SSC (7.5). These results point to the importance of identifying genotypes with high phenolic monomer activities in screening for lines with high TAC, to ensure their use in breeding programs aimed at improving the nutritional value of strawberry. Recognising their valuable role as key informants, this study examines the perspectives of front-line palliative care providers (FLPCP) regarding a social benefit programme in Canada designed to support family caregivers at end-of-life, namely the Compassionate Care Benefit (CCB). The CCB's purpose is to provide income assistance and job security to family caregivers who take temporary leave from employment to care for a dying family member. Contributing to an evaluative study that aims to provide policy-relevant recommendations about the CCB, this analysis draws on semi-structured interviews undertaken in 2007/2008 with FLPCPs ( n = 50) from across Canada. Although participants were not explicitly asked during interviews about their expectations of the CCB, thematic content analysis revealed 'expectations' as a key finding. Through participants' discussions of their knowledge of and familiarity with the CCB, specific expectations were identified and grouped into four categories: (1) temporal; (2) financial; (3) informational; and (4) administrative. Findings demonstrate that participants expect the CCB to provide: (1) an adequate length of leave time from work, which is reflective of the uncertain nature of caregiving at end-of-life; (2) adequate financial support; (3) information on the programme to be disseminated to FLPCPs so that they may share it with others; and (4) a simple, clear, and quick application process. FLPCPs hold unique expertise, and ultimately the power to shape uptake of the CCB. As such, their expectations of the CCB contribute valuable knowledge from which relevant policy recommendations can be made to better meet the needs of family caregivers and FLPCPs alike. The study investigates assortative mating patterns with respect to race (visible minority status) in Canada. Using the 2001 Census data, the article analyses the occurrence of White/non-White unions in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Log-linear models indicate that the relative levels of interracial relationships vary across racial groups, immigration status, and place of residence. First, the highest odds of cohabiting or marrying a White person are found among Blacks. Whereas the high level of racial exogamy of Blacks is observed in all metropolitan areas under study, the relative position of other groups varies. Second, the highest levels of racial exogamy are found among couples composed of an immigrant and a non-immigrant but this effect varies across racial groups. Third, our hypothesis that residents of Montreal (Quebec) will inter-partner less was confirmed only for unions between two native-born Canadians. Finally, we found that French Canadians are not more inclusive of their linguistic counterparts than Anglophones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
