Miscanthus spp. are increasingly cultivated in cropland worldwide due to their bioenergy potential and multiple ecological services. Effects of long‐term cropland‐to‐Miscanthus conversion without N fertilizer on soil microbiome and N cycling largely remain unknown. We aimed to explore the effects of Miscanthus conversion on soil microbiome and N cycling over a 15‐year period. We analyzed diversity, composition, and abundance of bacterial and archaeal communities using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and abundances of N‐cycling‐related genes using quantitative polymerase chain reaction of 0–10 cm soils collected from bare land, cropland, 10‐year Miscanthus × giganteus, and 15‐year Miscanthussacchriflorus land in Beijing. Conversion decreased soil sand and micro‐aggregate proportion, nitrate N (NiN), available phosphorus levels, conductivity, temperature, and pH, while increasing proportion of soil clay and macro‐aggregate (MAA), soil organic C (SOC), available N (AN), exchangeable Mg2+ (EMg2+), and available potassium (AK) contents as well as microbial C/N. Consequently, diversity, composition, and abundance of soil bacterial community exhibited larger changes than those values of archaeal community after conversion. Soil AP, EMg2+, AK, and SOC were key factors in shifting microbiome from the cropland to Miscanthus pattern. Moreover, abundances of bacterial and archaeal communities and the N fixer gene nifH increased, whereas that of the bacterial ammonia monooxygenase gene decreased. The copies of other N‐cycling‐related genes in the two Miscanthus lands seemed similar to those values of cropland. The nifH copies negatively correlated with soil NiN and positively correlated with AN, EMg2+, ECa2+, SOC, AK, and MAA. We conclude that changes in soil microbiome pattern induced by the variation of soil properties enhance microbial N fixation potential, maintaining stable N levels and robust N cycling with lower N leakage risk after conversion. Soil organic matter (SOM), as a kind of natural polymers, affects the migration and transport of ions and particles in soil system due to its surface characteristics and interaction and then causes significant changes in soil quality such as soil fertility loss and pollutant transfer. It is of great importance to study the temporal and spatial evolution of soil organic matter and its driving mechanism for soil health management. This study aims to fully reveal the evolution characteristics and driving mechanism of soil organic carbon (SOC) in farmland of the Beijing plain based on a six-year site monitoring. According to the research results, there is a significant difference in the overall soil organic content during the 6-year period. The temporal stability of SOC is moderate, and it is inversely proportional to SOC content in terms of spatial distribution. SOC content increases as organic fertilizer input rises, and an extra unit (15 kg·ha−1) of organic fertilizer input leads to an increase of 0.057 g·kg−1 in SOC content. The soil with higher clay content exhibits higher SOC content. The organic carbon content in different soil texture types increases with time, and there is a significant difference between the increases in medium loam and light loam. The grain field plantation system exhibited declining SOC content, while the protected vegetable fields, open vegetable fields, and orchards all showed an increase in SOC content. According to our results, the SOC content of farmland in the plain areas of Beijing is largely dependent on the input of organic carbon if other conditions remain unchanged or exhibit insignificant changes. Variations in soil radon concentrations are a potential precursor of earthquake and volcanic events. However, the unclear migration and variation mechanisms of radon concentrations in soil still limit its effective application. To elucidate the temporal variation and its possible influence factors on radon concentrations at different soil depths, a case study was performed at a suburban site in Beijing. A long-term continuous measurement system consisting of ten radon-in-soil monitors at depths from 0.1 to 5.0 m and other meteorological sensors was employed. The monitoring was carried out from January 8th to July 29th, 2022, covering 3445 h in total. Radon concentrations generally increased with soil depth. Diurnal variation of soil radon concentrations at depths of 1.2 and 1.6 m in winter and spring was observed, and a negative correlation between the soil radon concentration and the residual air pressure was found. This finding indicates a possible air exchange channel between the soil and the atmosphere at the study site. In addition, the soil radon concentration at 4.0 m depth was unexpectedly lower than that of neighboring depths and was steady throughout the measurement period. This is attributed to a possible clay layer in the soil structure at 4.0 m depth. Understanding the adsorption behavior of radiocesium (RCs) in natural soils is crucial for remediation and evaluation of radioactive contaminated sites. In this study, we investigated the adsorption behavior of Cs(I) onto natural soils collected in Beijing by batch adsorption experiments and sequential extraction. A multi-site adsorption model was built to quantitatively analyze the adsorption capacities of soil clay minerals and predict of Cs(I) adsorption ratio of different adsorption sites. Linear programming calculations show that illite/smectite (I/S) mixture and illite(I) are the mainly clay mineral composition. Batch adsorption experiment results show that soils adsorption of Cesium ions is an exothermic process, and the order of influence of competitive cations on the competitive adsorption strength of Cs(I) is:K+>Mg2+≈Ca2+>Na+. HA (Humic Acid)has little effect on soil adsorption. SEM-EDS analysis shows that Cs+ is mainly distributed on the surface (PS) of soil particles. Based on the above results, the adsorption of Cs(I) onto clay minerals in soils is well predicts in both linear programming calculations and a multi-site adsorption model. The multi-site adsorption model can quantitatively describe and predict the adsorption behavior of Cs(I) on different clay sites in the soils. Frayed edge sites (FES) in the soil can effectively fix trace RCs. The higher concentration of cesium ions is mainly adsorbed on the PS and TIIS. Sequential extraction experiment further proved the adsorption form of cesium in soil under trace and high concentration conditions. • Cross-sections combined with "horizons-to-solids" algorithm are recommended for 3D modeling in complicated alluvial systems. • A coupled 3D model of geological sequences and geotechnical properties of subsoils in Beijing has been built. • Shallow silty clay in Beijing is of low plasticity. • Clayey soils up to 10 m depth in Beijing present medium to high compressibility. Three-dimensional (3D) geological modeling has been developed in recent decades to overcome the complex nature of shallow superficial deposits in urban areas as a result of urbanized advancement. To meet the requirements of 3D geological models in the urban underground space construction in Beijing City, we constructed a coupled 3D model of geological sequences setting up to 50 m from the surface, and geotechnical properties of subsoils in Beijing for the first time via Creatar Xmodeling software. The modeling relies on 107 intersecting cross-sections and the horizons-to-solids approach aims to provide an insight into related modeling projects, especially in a complicated alluvial environment. In this paper, we described detailed modeling procedures, exhibited the outputs from the 3D model (combined geological units, cross-sections or fence diagrams, and properties presented in the form of horizontal distribution maps), and analyzed typical engineering properties of silty clay and clay units. The achieved 3D attributed model provides geologists an effective method to visualize the property characteristics of each layer and the potential connections between them, thereby to predict underground conditions and to reduce risks in geotechnical engineering processes such as urban underground constructions.
