Abstract

This article presents the results of two studies that revealed the effect of socioeconomic or racial status on cancer care, conducted by the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and presented at the 2008 Breast Cancer Symposium. One study by Lisa K. Jacobs, an assistant professor of surgery at the hospital, looked at mastectomy rates for rural patients compared with women in urban areas. Another study by postdoctoral fellow Grace L. Smith investigated the impact of race on care for women with early stage breast cancer.
