This article reports on the highlights of the 51st annual meeting of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS) which was held in Atlanta, Georgia in October 1988. Members heard its president, Martha E. Williams, warn that the society is too closely linked to library science. Williams said ASIS had weathered financial and survival crises of the past decade. She urged the recognition of information science as a true science and of ASIS as the organizational locus for the new ASIS priorities. At the midpoint of the meeting, ASIS Executive Director Linda Resnik shocked the ASIS board by announcing her resignation. She will stay until February and a search committee chaired by Daniel Robbins is seeking a replacement.
