The article presents an examination into the history of Southwest Arkansas in the aftermath of the U.S. Civil War, describing the process by which slave emancipation was carried out. Introductory comments are given discussing the historiography of the emancipation of slaves in the South generally, noting several areas of controversy. Discussion is then given noting how the events of Southwest Arkansas complicate many research narratives of the time line and agency of emancipation. Conclusions are given suggesting that the emancipation of the institution of slavery was accomplished through both actions of slaves in the later periods of the war as well as Northern administrative intervention.
