Introduction: Shigellosis represents one of the main causes of bloody diarrhoea in South America. This study aimed to establish the incidence of shigellosis in an urban zone of Buenos Aires, Argentina, by examining the type of Shigella and living conditions associated with this infection., Methodology: Between January 2009 and December 2010 we analyzed shigellosis in children admitted to the public health service with bloody diarrhoea from La Plata, the capital of Buenos Aires, Argentina. A total of 372 children under 15 years old with Shigella present in their stool samples were admitted to the study. Variables studied were patient age, type of Shigella, family economic status, and access to sewage services and safe drinking water., Results: Shigella flexneri was found to be present in 66.8% of the cases. Incidence was 187 cases/year/100,000 children under 15 years old. Cases were mainly observed during the summer (38.5%) in the population of under 5 years old (69.1% of all cases). The risk of shigellosis increased 12 times in those children who lacked safe drinking water and this risk increased 1.5 times in the population without sewage services. Fewer cases of shigellosis were noted in downtown areas, while hot spots were identified in the suburbs. Treating one case of shigellosis has a local cost of US $976 while assuring safe drinking water and sewage services for one family costs US $634. , Conclusion: Incidence of shigellosis in urban areas is associated with quality of water and sewage services. Policies aimed at providing education and improving public utilities networks can help to reduce the incidence of shigellosis.

Bact-Alert automatized system for blood cultures: 5 vs 7 days of incubation. First Argentine multicentre study. Between January and December 2001, we analyzed 80,141 blood cultures by the Bact-Alert system (14,960 FAN aerobics, 3,855 FAN anaerobic, 11,114 standards aerobics, 11,367 standards anaerobic, 12,054 pediatrics and 26,791 FAN pediatrics bottles) and 44.235 series from 27.615 patients at eight hospitals of Buenos Aires city, one of La Plata city and three of the Buenos Aires province. A total of 13,657 blood cultures yielded a positive result. Only 181 of them had been detected as positive between the 5th and 7th day of incubation and only 26 (0.19%) had clinical significance (Staphylococcus aureus 3; coagulase negative staphylococci 2; Enterococcus faecalis 1; Streptococcus pneumoniae 2; Campylobacter spp 1; Escherichia coli 1; Enterobacter cloacae 1; Enterobacteraerogenes 1; Citrobacter freundii 1; Klebsiella pneumoniae 1; Proteus mirabilis 1; Serratia marcescens 4; yeasts 7, including one strain of Cryptococcus neoformans). Of the total of contaminants, 38% were isolated by the anaerobic standard (65% were Propionibacterium spp and 29% coagulase negative staphylococci), 31.2% by the FAN aerobic (33.3% difphteroids and 28.9% Bacillus spp), 11.8% by the pediatric, 9% by FAN pediatric, 8.33% by aerobic standard and 1.4% by FAN anaerobic bottle. Our results show that the prolonged incubation of blood cultures for more than 5 days using the Bact-Alert system is unnecessary.

The use of direct and indirect ultrasound pretreatments was evaluated for the extraction of pectin enriched fractions with citric acid (pH 2.3, 85°C) from the albedo and pulp of Salustiana orange. The extractive method that produced the highest yield was the one involving a pretreatment with direct high‐power ultrasound (HPUS) (41 g isolated fraction/100 g albedo CM versus 30 g isolated fraction/ 100 g albedo CM for indirect treatment; 39 g isolated fraction/100 g pulp CM versus 26 g isolated fraction/100 g pulp CM for indirect treatment) and allowed extracting the highest amount of pectin from both albedo and pulp. The major neutral sugars found in all fractions were arabinose, galactose, and rhamnose. Pectins were obtained with weight average molecular masses of 566–729 kDa from the albedo and 663–739 kDa from the pulp. All fractions gelled in the presence of sucrose at acidic pH. Pretreatment with HPUS gave origin to the least elastic gels (albedo: G′ higher than 100 Pa, G″ higher than 20 Pa. Pulp: G′ higher than 70 Pa, G″ higher than 25 Pa), while indirect US produced fractions that formed more elastic gels (albedo: G′ higher than 1000 Pa, G″ higher than 250 Pa. Pulp: G′ higher than 500 Pa, G″ higher than 100 Pa). Ultrasound pretreatments allowed obtaining a variety of pectin enriched fractions with interesting characteristics for food formulation. Practical applications: Pectins are widely used as texture modifiers in the food industry. Commercial pectins are commonly obtained from waste from the citrus juice industry, using mineral acids at high temperatures, producing large amounts of polluting effluents. The study of the use of organic acids in combination with clean technologies such as ultrasound, which allow higher pectin yields to be obtained through less polluting processes, is of great interest as an environmentally friendly alternative. Likewise, it is important to demonstrate that the pectins obtained through such technologies are effectively useful for the industry as texture modifying additives. This study attempts to improve the understanding of how factors related to the board of directors in emerging countries from America determine a firm's sustainability performance. This paper examines the effect of board cultural diversity and the mediating effect of the existence of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) committee. To test our objectives, we carried out a sample analysis on data gathered between 2012 and 2018 from a group of firms located in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. The results suggest that board cultural diversity promotes a firm's commitment toward sustainability issues and leads to higher social and environmental performance. Moreover, the results show the mediating effect of the existence of a CSR committee, where a positive impact on sustainability performance appears to be linked to board cultural diversity. Peanut smut caused by Thecaphora frezii Carranza & Lindquist has been an issue for farmers and the peanut industry (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Argentina since the mid‐1990s. This disease causes pod malformation due to hypertrophy of seed tissues; in addition, colonized cells filled with teliospores give seeds a smutted mass appearance. Incidence may reach up to 52% in commercial plots, with up to 35% yield losses. Cultural management strategies and chemical treatment have not been effective; therefore, growing resistant varieties is likely to be the most effective control method for this disease. This study is aimed to identify sources of resistance in wild Arachis and to develop pre‐breeding materials for transferring the trait to cultivated peanut. After 3 yr of field trials using a randomized complete block design, the seven accessions of wild species assayed were resistant to smut. An amphidiploid [A. correntina (Burkart) Krapov. & W.C. Greg. × A. cardenasii Krapov. & W.C. Greg.] × A. batizocoi Krapov. & W.C. Greg.)4× was obtained and subsequently crossed with and experimental line of A. hypogaea for the development of a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population (89 lines). The RIL population showed a high phenotypic variability for resistance to peanut smut. The amphidiploid and 22 RILs were highly resistant, illustrating the effective transmission of resistance to peanut smut from the wild diploids into A. hypogaea. The development of RILs with resistance derived from wild species is a significant step towards the development of new peanut cultivars with different sources of resistance to peanut smut. The human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Anoplura: Pediculidae), is a worldwide public health concern. This human obligate ectoparasite usually infests school age children. The aim of this work was to investigate the prevalence of head lice in kindergarten children from Bahia Blanca. In addition, the influence of risk factors for pediculosis infestation, such as gender, hair characteristics, and socioeconomic class, was studied in relation to the prevalence of this ectoparasite. From a total of 220 pupils examined (125 girls and 95 boys), 94 showed pediculosis. The overall prevalence of head lice infestation was 42.7 %. Pediculosis was more frequent in girls (53.6 %) than in boys (28.4 %) and in medium, long, and very long hairs. No differences were found between socioeconomic classes. This indicated that head lice are relatively common in kindergarten children from Bahía Blanca. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
