Background: In the present quantitative and qualitative study, to compare the new variety of naked barley with other cereals (durum wheat, commun wheat, coated barley). Regarding the richness in phytonutrients including mainly flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins condensed in a hydroponic culture. Methods: The experiment was conducted in Laboratory of Life Sciences and Techniques, Souk Ahras University in Algeria during 2019-2022. The antioxidant power was tested according to the DPPH free radical scavenging method. The results obtained from the quantitative study of methanolic extracts show that varieties rich in tannins and flavonoids have a significant antioxidant activity than a variety rich only in total polyphenols. Qualitative studies based on HPLC of these compounds allow us to visualize phenolic traces of our extracts, this analysis showed that our extracts mainly contain flavonoids of the flavone and flavonol type, potentially interesting for their biological properties. Result: The results reported the existence of a very highly significant difference (P<0.001) between IC50 of the new variety Chaiir Ennabi (Naked Barley) compared to ascorbic acid, which shows a lower antioxidant activity of this variety. A study was conducted to determine the effects of packaging materials, and storage time on physicochemical and antioxidant properties of commercial concentrate orange juice largely consumed in Algeria (Ramy). The juice was packaged in different packaging materials (glass, cardboard and plastic bottles) and stored for three months at room temperature. Total soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, vitamin C, and antioxidant activity (DPPH method) were evaluated in freshly juice, and after 1,2, and 3 months of storage. The results showed that total soluble solids, pH, vitamin C and antioxidant activity decreased with storage time under different storage time, irrespective of packaging materials. On the contray, the acidity increased during storage. The juice in glass bottles did not show significant changes until the end of storage. It was conducted that glass bottles packing proved to be most suitable for orange juice storage, which maintained the better quality and antioxidant properties loss than rest of the packing materials. This paper reports an evaluation of Annaba city climate impact on phytochemical composition and antiradical power of Tropaeolum majus leaf, flower and fruit extracts. Significant phenolic, flavonoid, tannin and carotenoid levels were registered in leaf extract, whereas flower extract showed higher yield, vitamin C and anthocyanin contents. The 2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging power was significantly higher in leaf extract. Conversely, hydroxyl antiradical power was significantly higher in fruit fixed oil. These results show that the Mediterranean climate of Annaba City improved Tropaeolum majus leaves and the nutritional qualities of flowers and fruits, enhancing their phytochemical composition as well as antiradical properties. The aim of present study was to determine the antioxidant and anti-mycotoxin activities of crude ethanolic extracts from various organs of Bunium ferulaceum Sm. plant from Western Algeria. Firstly, we proceed to a phytochemical screening of leaves, kernels, and barks of plants. Tests showed the presence of several families of chemical constituents and phenolic compounds. The quantitative estimation of the total phenol content, flavonoids, and coumarins is carried out by colorimetric methods. The important total phenolic contents were found in leaves extract with a TPC value of 51.22 ± 0.46 mg GAE/g, whose flavonoids were revealed to be the main phenolic compounds in this extract and the coumarins in bark extract. The antioxidant activity was estimated by the DPPH method compared to the ascorbic acid antioxidant. The leaves extract showed a good scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 0.11 ± 0.57 mg/ml. Anti-mycotoxin activity are tested against three pathogens fungi produced mycotoxins using mycelial biomass assay and mycotoxigenic test. For all fungi tested, leaves extract showed the most inhibitory activity against Penicillium expansum MTTC 1344 and Aspergillus flavus MTTC 2799 followed by bark extract. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plants have phytotherapeutic properties such as antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, and their rare use remains a very interesting task in medicine. The present work addresses the new natural substances extracted from the plant Warionia saharae, and the study of their biological, antioxidant and antifungal activities in vitro. A qualitative analysis was performed by a phytochemical screening of the plants. The direct contact method in solid medium carried a study of the antifungal activity of organic and aqueous extracts against four fungal strains. After, an estimation of the antioxidant power of these extracts and that of ascorbic acid by the DPPH free radical reduction method was performed. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of reducing compounds, saponosides with a foam index of 120, tannins, alkaloids, anthocyanosides. The antifungal activity results show that the hexane extract has potent inhibitory activity against fungal strains. The MIC is 2.42 mg/ml for Penicillium sp. and 3.5 mg/ml for Fusarium sp., followed by the ethanolic extract. The antioxidant activity estimates IC50% of 6.09 µg/ml for the ethanolic extract, while the positive control, ascorbic acid, is 1.02 µg/ml. These preliminary in vitro results show that natural extracts of W. saharae Benth & Coss exhibit significant antifungal activity and antiradical power. Halophilic archaea represent a promising natural source of carotenoids. However, little information is available about these archaeal metabolites and their biological effects. In the present work, carotenoids of strains Haloferax sp. ME16, Halogeometricum sp. ME3 and Haloarcula sp. BT9, isolated from Algerian salt lakes, were produced, extracted and identified by high‐performance liquid chromatography–diode array detector and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Analytical results revealed a variation in the composition depending on the strain with a predominance of bacterioruberin. The evaluation of antioxidant capacity using ABTS [(2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assays showed that these extracts have a strong antioxidant potential, in particular those of Haloferax sp. ME16 which displayed antioxidant power significantly higher than that of ascorbic acid used as standard. Antibacterial activity of carotenoid extracts against four human‐pathogenic strains and four fish‐pathogenic strains was evaluated by agar disk diffusion method. The results showed a good antibacterial activity. These findings suggest that the C50 carotenoids from the studied strains offer promising prospects for biotechnological applications. Edible fungal species like desert truffles are often considered a healthy food source, contributing to high antioxidant and antimicrobial effects which have been used as functional foods for health promotion and disease prevention, and as treatments for a variety of diseases since antiquity. The use of desert truffles in traditional medicine has led to modern scientific investigation into their bioactive properties. This study is part of this perspective and consists of doing in a first time the determination of the nutritional value of Terfezia boudieri harvested from North-western of Algeria, Secondly, we have evaluated the antioxidant capacity using two complementary test systems, namely DPPH free radical scavenging and iron reduction (FRAP), and finely the antimicrobial properties were screened against seventeen Gram positive and Gram negative pathogenic bacterial strains; and two strains of yeast using agar well diffusion method. The quantitative estimate of nutritional value shows that T. boudieri showed a preponderance of proteins and minerals with12.57 ± 0.13 and 15 ± 3g / 100g dry weight respectively; In addition, the methanolic extract of the ascocarps contains a high content of total phenols estimated at 44.68 ± 0.22 mg GAE / g, vitamin c and carotenoids are also present in large quantities. The methanolic extract has good capacity reduction with iron. The free radical scavenging capacity DPPH is very interesting with an IC50 = 0.30 mg / ml; this last remains greater than the radical trapping capacity DPPH of ascorbic acid, whose IC50 = 0.08 mg / ml. Results of antimicrobial activity in particular against Gram (+) bacteria, the diameter of which varies from 10 ± 0.01 to 30 ± 0.57 mm where Bacillus subtilis appears to be the most sensitive. On the other hand, they have moderate activity against Gram (-) bacteria where Enterobacter cleacae, and Actinobacter baumannii, are the only Gram (-) bacteria that show hyper-sensitivity, our methanolic extract did not show anticandidal activity against Candida albicans. Therefore, the current results have demonstrated that this mushroom is nutritious and contain multiple antioxidants and has confirmed that desert truffle extracts have antimicrobial properties that are effective against common pathogens that cause disease in humans, which can be further exploited for clinical use. The present study aims to investigating, the chemical composition of the essential oil extracted from Thymus capitatus harvested in west, Algeria. It seeks the other objective to the determination of antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal activities of oil in order to find new metabolite products, which are characterized by a biological activity. The investigations and research was carried out on the essential oil (EO) extracted from the dried leaves of Thymus Capitatus Lamiaceae that was harvested in the region of Tiart (West of Algeria). GC–MS analysis of EO is identified 22 components while thymol, carvacrol and γ-terpinene are the major components. The antioxidant activity of EO was evaluated by three methods: the DPPH test (2,2-diphenyl-1-1-picrirylhydrazil), the FRAP (Ferric reducing antioxidant power) and TAC (Total Antioxidant Capacity) test and compared with ascorbic acid, BHA (Butylated hydroxy anisole) and commercial thymol as standards. The results indicated that Thymus Capitatus oil showed higher antioxidant power in comparison with the standards with values of (0.61, 2.13 and 0.78) μg/mL for the DPPH, FRAP and TAC tests respectively. Also, the antibacterial activity of the oil was tested using the agar disc diffusion method, by determining the inhibition zone and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). In this case, the results have shown a potential of the antibacterial activity than commercial antibiotics (Chloramphenicol, Cefoxitin, Gentamycin) against the tested strains, with MIC values of (29.44, 14.72, 14.72 and 7.36 μg/mL) for Staphylococcus aureus, S. typhi, E. coli and Streptococcus pneumoniae strains respectively. Furthermore, the antifungal study on the fungi of Cladosporium herbarum, Alternaria infectoria, Aspergillus Ochraceus, Trichophyton Sp reported significant results. The effectiveness of the oil showed that the essential oil has a fungicidal effect against the strains Cladosporium herbarum, Alternaria infectoria and a fungistatic effect against strains Aspergillus ochraceus and Trichophyton rubrum. The research outcomes clearly demonstrate that the essential oils of thymus capitatus can present an interesting alternative naturel which can be useful for food preservation and pharmaceutical treatment. Phoenix dactylifera L. Date, a high energy fruit with a sweet taste, is one of the most important staple foods consumed in southern region of Algeria. The aim of this study was to determine the physico-chemical and microbial attributes of two common date varieties (Feggous and Hmira) in Abadla Oasis- Bechar (South-west of Algeria) for their valorization. The analysis showed that dates fruits contained a high level of total sugar which exceeded 80%, but a low content of fat (0.72%) and protein (0.91%). The mean value of humidity, pH and ash of the samples were obtained as 22.13%, 6.17, and 1.72% respectively all dates contained high amounts of K, Na, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ca, Mg and P. The maximum levels of the majority of minerals were found in Feggous variety. Moreover, Vitamin E and Vitamin C of under-valued dates ranged between 0.37 and 2.74 mg/100g on dry weight basis. The microbiological analyses of dates showed the existence of total aerobic flora, a fungal flora dominated by Penicillium and Aspergillus, yeasts as well as the absence of pathogen strains. The morphological, biochemical and microbial properties of studied date fruits were in accordance with national and international regulations. These results may be useful for valorization of local date varieties, and for evaluation of dietary information and concludes that dates are the good sources of minerals and vitamins in Saharan regions. Abstract: Hydromethanolic extracts from 18 Algerian medicinal plants were screened for their phenolic contents and radical scavenging activities. The phenolic extract of Cleome arabica (Capparaceae) was found to be the most active one. Purification of this extract by semi-preparative high performance liquid chromatography led to the isolation and identification of new steroid derivative. The structure of the active principle is proposed as (17-(4-hydroxy-1,5-dimethylhexyl)-2,3,7-(acetyloxy) gona-1,3,5(10)-trien-15-ol). Compared to six other standard antioxidants which were ascorbic acid, α-tocopherol, Trolox, (+) catechin, p-coumaric acid and gallic acid, the isolated compound was found to be significantly more active in the radical scavenging assay using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Similar results were obtained in the hemolysis assay. The antioxidant capacities of the methanolic extract of C. arabica and its principle compound indicate that this plant may be an important source of chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic natural products activity.
