In order to comprehensively evaluate the ecological sustainable development capacity of water-energy-food system in the Yellow River Basin, based on the energy theory and method, and combining with the entropy method, this paper built an evaluation index system for the ecological sustainable development capacity of the water-energy-food system in the Yellow River Basin, and comprehensively evaluated the ecological sustainable development capacity of this system from 2008 to 2018. The results show that a) from the overall perspective of the Yellow River Basin, the nexus system belongs to the resource-consuming economic development mode from 2008 to 2018. The rapid economic development has exerted great pressure on the local ecological environment, and the system has been in a state of high environmental load for a long time, resulting in the continuous weakening of the ecological sustainability of the system. b) From the perspective of provinces in the Yellow River Basin, the ecological environment pressure of the lower reaches of the river basin is increasing day by day and the ecological sustainable development capacity is poor. Therefore, the exploitation of renewable resources should be strengthened and the dependence on non-renewable resources should be reduced. The upstream provinces have relatively less environmental pressure and better ecological sustainability. It should strengthen infrastructure construction and promote economic development. c) The overall structural equilibrium of water-energy-food in the Yellow River Basin provinces and regions shows significant variability in time and space, and the ecological sustainability of the system is weakening. Reservoir operation optimization is a technical measure for flood control and is beneficial owing to its reasonable and reliable control and application of existing water conservancy and hydropower hubs, while ensuring dam safety and flood control, as well as the normal operation of power supply and water supply. Considering the beneficial functions of reservoirs, namely flood control and ecological protection, this paper firstly established a two-objective optimal operation model for the reservoir group in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. We aim to maximize the average output of the cascade reservoir group and minimize the average change in ecological flow during the operation period under efficient sediment transport conditions, with the coordination degree of water and sediment as the constraints of reservoir discharge flows. The paper aims to construct an evaluation index system for reservoir operation schemes, apply a combined approach of objective and subjective evaluations, and introduce the gray target and cumulative prospect theories. By uniformly quantifying the established scheme evaluation index system, screening the reservoir operation schemes with the fuzzy evaluation method, and selecting the recommended scheme for each typical year, this paper provides a new scientific formulation of the operation schemes of reservoirs in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. The selected schemes are compared with actual data, demonstrating the effectiveness of joint reservoir operation and for multidimensional benefits in terms of power generation, ecology, and flood control.

The projection of runoff in a large‐scale basin under climate change and human activities is crucial for the future management of water supplies. The impacts of climate change on runoff projections are associated with large uncertainties. In this study, using the optimization and selection of climate models, as well as an uncertainty analysis via the global Bayesian model averaging (BMA) approach, an ensemble projection framework was established to significantly improve the reliability of runoff projections in the future. The global BMA algorithm proposed in this study is an improvement on the BMA algorithm for large basins and is designed to reflect the differences among various models across the basin. In this algorithm, comprehensive BMA weights are obtained by considering the number (N) of stations in a basin. To verify the feasibility and improvement of this method, the runoff in 2050 and 2070 was projected with data from the Yellow River Basin, China. The runoff and its 90% confidence intervals at the six main stations in the Yellow River Basin were obtained. The increased evapotranspiration will exceed the increase in runoff generated by increase in precipitation in the future. The runoff in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River in 2050 and 2070 are projected to be 9% and 7% lower, respectively, than those in the reference period. The ensemble projection method proposed in this paper can be used as a widely applicable process in hydrometeorological ensemble projection and provides a basis for water resource management planning. Collaborative efforts to reduce pollution and carbon emissions are a notable feature of the current era. Achieving the "pollution reduction" and "carbon reduction" dual-driven new development model is the inevitable requirement and significant practical measure for building a new development pattern and realizing a comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development. The synergistic effects between pollution reduction and carbon reduction (PRCR) have been demonstrated. However, the measurement and quantitative analysis of the coupling coordination degree (CCD) of PRCR have not received enough attention. Therefore, the evaluation index system was constructed based on the scientific connotation of PRCR, and the CCD of PRCR in cities along the Yellow River Basin (YRB) from 2009 to 2018 was measured quantitatively by constructing the coupling coordination model in this paper. In addition, we comprehensively investigated its spatial pattern, distribution characteristics, and evolution trend using ESDA, Kernel density estimation, and Markov chain. The primary findings can be summarized as: (1) PRCR levels and their CCD fluctuated and increased in the YRB, with "east-high and west-low" spatial differentiation characteristics, and the coupling phenomenon of "pollution reduction is hindered and carbon reduction is lagging". (2) There is a phenomenon of "spatial club" clustering in the coordination degree of PRCR in the YRB, with most cities in the downstream areas belonging to the type of high-high clustering, while the middle and upstream areas had the opposite type. (3) The CCD of PRCR in the whole and upper reaches of the YRB have transformed from low-level divergence to high-level convergence. (4) Spatial geographic factors have a significant spillover effect on the evolution of the CCD of PRCR, and there is a phenomenon of the "Matthew effect". In order to encourage the in-depth implementation of China major national strategies on ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin, this paper based on the theoretical significance of Economic Geography, the Thought on Ecological Civilization, Dual-Nuclei Structure and the practical needs included the service and integration into the new development pattern, the coordinated development of the north-south economy and the high-quality development in inter-provincial border areas, a strategic concept of Zhengzhou and Jinan Twin City Economic Circle was put forward. The feasibility of Zhengzhou and Jinan Twin City Economic Circle construction was analyzed empirically through the strength of economic connections between Zhengzhou and Jinan, and the spatial layout of “One District, Two Cores and Three Belts” was constructed. Policy recommendations to promote the construction and development of Zhengzhou and Jinan Twin City Economic Circle were put forward by accessing the five aspects of strengthening the development of adjacent areas between Henan and Shandong; ensuring the security and ecological co-governance of the Yellow River Basin; consolidating the construction of transportation infrastructure; strengthening scientific and technological innovations and industrial co-operations; and deepening the integrated development of culture and tourism. Ecological environment is the foundation of economic development. Coordinated development of economic development and ecological environment in the Yellow River Basin is the premise to promote its' ecological protection and high-quality development. This paper took 91 cities of the Yellow River basin as the research unit, constructed economic development and ecological environment coupling coordination evaluation index system, used entropy method and coupling coordination model to analyse the spatial and temporal pattern of coupling coordi‐ nation between economic development and ecological environment in the Yellow River Basin from 2005 to 2018. The results show that: (1)From the perspective of timing analysis, the cou‐ pling degree between economic development and ecological environment in the Yellow River Basin presents a trend of slight fluctuation and decline, with a low level of coupling and a longtime opponent of moderate coupling. Overall, the degree of coordination fluctuates and declines, mainly from the stage of near disorder to the stage of mild disorder, and the level of coordination needs to be improved. As a whole, the relative degree of development fluctuates greatly, which is manifested as that the ecological environment gradually lags behind the economic develop‐ ment as time goes by. (2)From the perspective of spatial analysis, the coupling degree presents a spatial pattern gradually increasing from the upstream to the middle and downstream, and the co‐ ordination degree presents a pattern of continuous distribution with provincial capitals and coast‐ al cities as the high-value centers, showing obvious spatial differences. The urban agglomerations in the Yellow River Basin are important carriers for China’s high-quality development. It is an inevitable trend to promote sustainable development and people’s well-being in the urban agglomerations of the Yellow River Basin. A case study of 70 cities of seven urban agglomerations in the Yellow River Basin from 2011 to 2017 is presented. The two-stage super-efficiency network slacks-based measure (Super-NSBM) model considering undesirable outputs is adopted to measure the ecological well-being performance (EWP), and the spatial correlation analysis method is used to analyze the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of the EWP. The results show that the average EWP of the seven urban agglomerations in the Yellow River Basin was less than 1, showing a trend of firstly rising and then slowly decreasing. The average EWP presents the distribution pattern of the highest in the middle reaches, followed by the upper reaches, and the lowest in the lower reaches of the Yellow River Basin, respectively. The average ecological economic efficiency in the first stage of urban agglomerations of the Yellow River Basin was greater than the average economic well-being efficiency in the second stage. The average EWP in the Yellow River Basin shows local spatial heterogeneity during the study period. Policy measures are proposed to promote the improvement of the EWP of urban agglomerations in the Yellow River Basin. In order to provide reference for the implementation of ecological protection and high-quality development strategy in the Yellow River Basin, taking the nine provinces（regions） in the Yellow River Basin as the research object and high-quality development as the starting point, from the perspective of promoting high-quality development, this paper used three-stage DEA model, Malmquist DEA model and absolute β convergence test model to calculate the green economic efficiency of the Yellow River Basin and analyzed the convergence based on the spatial panel data from 2009 to 2017. The results shows that the overall efficiency of green economy in the Yellow River Basin is low, and there are obvious differences in the efficiency of green economy in all provinces and regions; ignoring the influence of external environmental factors and random interference, it will overestimate the efficiency of green economy in the Yellow River Basin; the external environmental factors affecting the efficiency of green economy in the Yellow River Basin are diverse and complex, and the improvement of per capita GDP and urbanization rate is helpless for improving the efficiency of green economy, the proportion of general budget expenditure in GDP is conducive to improve the efficiency of green economy, and the proportion of fixed assets investment in agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, fishery and mining industry will help to improve the efficiency of green economy; caused by the decline of technological progress change index, the overall green economic efficiency of the Yellow River Basin is declining; the green economic efficiency of the Yellow River Basin has the trend of convergence, which is reflected in the convergence of pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. Globally, nations and regions have pushed for "green development (GD)", a sustainable development strategy that considers the integrated growth of "economy–environment–society". As it is an area of China that provides an ecological function and is an important energy base, it is necessary to explore the current situation and factors influencing GD in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). Therefore, first, this paper constructs a GD indicator system from a multi-dimensional perspective, measures the GD of 79 prefecture-level cities in the YRB from 2006 to 2019 by using the entropy method, and analyzes the evolution of time series according to the results. We found that the YRB's GD showed an overall increase during the study period, rising from 0.1261 to 0.2195, but the level was low. Second, we analyzed the spatial characteristics of the YRB's GD using a spatial analysis method and concluded that GD varied significantly across cities in the YRB. The YRB presented spatial distribution characteristics with obvious "quad-core pieces", and there was a high intensity of spatial correlation and agglomeration. The spatial center of gravity of GD moved toward the southeast year by year. Third, we examined the influencing factors of the GD of the YRB through the spatial Durbin model. The study found that the spatial spillover effect on GD in the YRB was obvious, and the reasons affecting the GD of the YRB were heterogeneous. Studying the spatial distribution characteristics of and factors that influence intangible cultural heritage is an important way to improve the management and protection of the heritage. On the basis of the standard deviation ellipse, point pattern analysis, kernel density analysis, spatial autocorrelation, Geodetector, and other methods, 891 national intangible cultural heritage artifacts (divided into five batches and ten categories) in the Yellow River Basin were taken as the research objects, and their spatial and temporal distribution characteristics and causes were quantitatively analyzed. As per the results, (1) the intangible cultural heritage in the Yellow River Basin shows a spatial distribution pattern that is dense in the east and sparse in the west, and there is a strong spatial dependence; (2) the intangible cultural heritage in the Yellow River Basin shows a "west first and then east" trend in time, and the quantity and type have significant differences in different time sections; (3) according to the batch analysis, the aggregation of the second batch of the intangible cultural heritage is the strongest, and the NNI value continues to increase from the second to the fifth batch of the intangible cultural heritage, indicating that the development of intangible cultural heritage is increasingly related to areas with backward economies and ethnic minorities; and (4) policy orientation, economic development, and topography are the dominant factors affecting the spatial distribution pattern of the intangible cultural heritage in the Yellow River Basin. The upper Yellow River basin is located in the new Silk Road economic belt. Fundamental to the healthy development of the Yellow River ecosystem and the security of water resources in the economic belt are the hydrological regime change that drives river ecosystem processes, or called ecological flow regimes (EFR). When developing a sustainable and ecofriendly Silk Road economic belt, the evaluation of the alteration of the EFR and an attribute analysis should receive great attention because they can provide decision makers with more information on ecological implications for balancing environmental and human water needs. The objective of this paper is to investigate the EFR variation at the Lanzhou gauge as the control section of the upper Yellow River basin. First, the paper addresses the macroscale EFR using ecoflow metrics (ecodeficit and ecosurplus), i.e., the multi-year trend of the annual and seasonal changes in ecological flow. Second, it evaluates microscale variations in EFR via the Yellow River ecohydrological index system and compares them with macroscale changes in EFR to verify their consistency. Third, it analyzes the attributes of EFR variation and determines the impact of the construction and operation of reservoirs on the variation. Results show that macro- and microscale EFR at the Lanzhou gauge have significant changes before and after the construction of reservoirs in the upper Yellow River basin, reaching a high degree of alteration. Reservoir construction and operation have been the major reason for the alteration of EFR in the past few decades, and the cascade reservoir regulation has more significantly affected the changes in EFR than has a single reservoir, placing the downstream fluvial ecological system under serious risk. This change should arouse considerable concern, particularly in the development of the new Silk Road economic belt. In addition, ecoflow metrics used for reflecting the macroscale change in this study are highly correlated with microscale indicators of EFR that are accepted in the upper Yellow River basin. This result implies that ecoflow metrics can mirror most ecological information from these microscale indicators and are suitable for the evaluation of alterations in hydrological processes at annual and seasonal timescales. Examining the interplay among water-energy-environment-economy in the Yellow River Basin holds paramount importance for ecological conservation and fostering the high-quality advancement in this region. This research establishes a theoretical framework for understanding the water-energy-environment-economy interplay and proposes a comprehensive evaluation index system targeting for holistic development of the water-energy-environment-economy system. Analyzing data from 57 cities in the Yellow River Basin in 2002–2022, this research employes the coupling coordination model, spatial autocorrelation model, and obstacle model for in-depth analysis. The findings indicate: (1) The overall development of water-energy-environment-economy in the Yellow River Basin demonstrates a steady upward trajectory, with distinct evolution patterns in each subsystem. (2) The coupling coordination degree in water-energy-environment-economy exhibits a gradual improvement, with the coupling coordination values showing the sequence of Lower reaches > Upper reaches > Total average > Middle reaches. (3) Coupling coordination degree reveals a spatial pattern of high values in peripheries and lower values in the central areas, suggesting a certain spatial agglomeration. (4) Water resources per capita emerges as the primary obstacle factor in the Yellow River Basin, with its obstacle degree on the rise. • Developed a method to assess synergy and competition in water-energy-food systems. • Energy and food industries face intense competition for water in the Yellow River Basin. • Considering water quality exacerbates competition for water between food and energy and diminishes synergy. • Resource endowment and technological level have significant impact on the degree of competition. Water, as an indispensable component of the water-energy-food (WEF) nexus, plays a pivotal role in shaping its stability and safety. The competition for water between the food and energy systems is accentuated in the concept of the nexus. However, existing quantitative frameworks and assessment mechanisms have limitations as they often neglect to consider water quality in water competition within the WEF nexus. Therefore, a WEF nexus synergy and competition assessment method was proposed by coupling water footprint theory and the Lotka-Volterra model in this paper. This method establishes two scenarios based on the water footprint perspective, namely, water quantity and water quality-quantity. It effectively addresses the deficiencies in quantitative analysis of WEF system trade-offs and synergies. To illustrate the application of the method, this study conducted a case study in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) of China, evaluating the complex competitive and synergistic mechanisms of water use in the energy and food industries. Compared to the water quantity scenario, the results reveals that the inclusion of gray water footprint intensifies the competition for water in the food and energy industries in the YRB from 2000 to 2020, particularly in resource-based and economically developed cities. The spatial distribution characteristics of water resource competition and synergy in the YRB's WEF system align with WEF endowment and economic technology levels. To address water conflicts in the WEF nexus and enhance nexus security, this study proposes a regulatory pathway for WEF system synergistic security based on two aspects (water competition and synergy characteristics and resource endowment). Introductions: Since the reform and opening up, the inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) has provided a steady stream of capital, technology, talent and other resources for the development of the Yellow River basin, while caused problems such as environmental pollution, ecological fragility and industrial structure upgrading difficulties to some extent. Environmental regulation is a pivotal initiative to achieve mutual harmony between ecological environment and economic development, which could enhance the quality of the introduction of FDI and accelerate the green transformation of the development mode. Methods: Based on urban panel data from 2006-2019, this study empirically examined the impact of FDI and environmental regulation on industrial structure upgrading in the Yellow River Basin. Moreover, taking environmental regulation as a threshold variable, a panel threshold model was established to further explore the role of environmental regulation in the impact of FDI on industrial structure upgrading in the Yellow River Basin. Results: (1) The relationship between FDI and industrial structure upgrading in the Yellow River Basin is not a simple linear relationship, but an inverted "U"-shaped relationship that rises first and then falls, and the results of this inverted "U"-shaped relationship are still robust after replacing key indicators. (2) The environmental regulation policy has a driving effect on the upgrading of industrial structure in the Yellow River Basin. (3) Environmental regulation has a positive role in the influence of FDI on the industrial structure upgrading in the Yellow River basin, and the positive role increases gradually as the intensity of environmental regulation increases moderately, but if the intensity of environmental regulation is too high, it will have a negative impact on the upgrading of industrial structure in the Yellow River basin to some extent. Discussion: In the future, policymakers should make reasonable and effective use of FDI and improve the quality of FDI; reasonably formulate environmental regulation policies; coordinate the intensity of FDI and environmental regulation; thus, bring into play the promotion effect of FDI and environmental regulation on industrial structure upgrading, and then realize the win-win of ecological protection and high-quality economic development in the Yellow River Basin. Objectively and accurately identifying the spatial structure and protection scope of intangible cultural heritage and constructing intangible cultural heritage corridors are crucial for the comprehensive systematic protection of intangible cultural heritage and the synergistic development of the region. However, the current research on intangible cultural heritage is limited to the protection and development of intangible cultural heritage in specific locations or specific areas. Thus, systematic and holistic research perspectives are relatively limited. Therefore, this study employs geographic information system spatial analysis and the minimum cumulative resistance model to construct an intangible cultural heritage corridor in the Yellow River Basin. This study aims to establish a systematic protection method and framework for intangible cultural heritage. The results show the following: (1) The intangible cultural heritage in the Yellow River Basin has a large-scale centralized distribution and small-scale scattered distribution, which provides an important spatial basis for the construction of intangible cultural heritage corridors. (2) Overall, intangible cultural heritage corridors can be more effectively constructed in the eastern region of the Yellow River Basin than in the western region, with 84.6% of the area being suitable and 15.4% being unsuitable. (3) Based on the suitability analysis, the "18 + N" corridor system of intangible cultural heritage in the Yellow River Basin, distributed across the eastern, central and southern regions, is constructed. The major corridor has a suitable width of 60–100 km, a total length of 11,935 km, and an area of 625,976 km2–919,942 km2, and can connect 634–711 intangible cultural heritage sites in series. On this basis, this study proposes a multilevel construction system for intangible cultural heritage corridors in the Yellow River Basin that integrates the "network structure–spatial scope" and "element–axis–region" levels. This approach culminates in a pattern of intangible cultural heritage protection and development in the Yellow River Basin characterized by "connecting points into lines, distributing in groups, and linking regions." This study reveals that combining geographic information system spatial analysis tools with a minimum cumulative resistance model effectively identifies potential heritage corridor networks and clarifies the hierarchical relationships of heritage element protection in the study area. This approach provides a reference model for the comprehensive protection and systematic development of intangible cultural heritage in the Yellow River Basin. This study investigates the Dynamic Coupling between Land Use Economic Efficiency (LUEE) and Urban Ecological Resilience (UER) in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). This exploration is pivotal for elucidating the interaction mechanisms between economic growth and ecological governance. Furthermore, understanding this relationship is essential for fostering high-quality, sustainable urban development in the YRB. Utilizing panel data from 56 cities spanning 2003 to 2020, this study employed the coupling coordination degree (CCD) model, spatial correlation analysis, Kernel density estimation, convergence model, and Geodetector to systematically analyze the spatio-temporal distribution, dynamic trend, and determinants of the CCD between LUEE and UER in the YRB. The findings indicate that: (1) A general upward trend in both LUEE and UER, accompanied by a steady improvement in their CCD. (2) Significant spatial disparities in their CCD, with higher levels in the lower reaches. (3) Marked positive spatial autocorrelation, predominantly characterized by clusters where high (low) values are surrounded by high (low) values. (4) Regarding the impact of individual factors, government fiscal budget expenditure demonstrates the most robust explanatory power for the CCD within the YRB. Concerning the effects of two-factor interactions, the interplay between industrial structure upgrading and government fiscal budget expenditure emerges as the most significant determinant in influencing the CCD between LUEE and UER. This study enhances our comprehensive understanding of the interplay between economic and ecological systems. Ecological well-being performance (EWP) is a key indicator of sustainable development and has garnered significant research attention. This study measures the overall and stage-by-stage efficiency of the urban agglomerations in the Yellow River Basin based on the ends–means framework of steady-state economics. This study then delves into the spatiotemporal transfer characteristics of EWP through Moran's I, and spatial Markov chains. Additionally, this research investigates the factors influencing EWP using a random forest model. The findings indicate a notable enhancement in EWP in the urban agglomerations in the YRB from 2006 to 2021, showing clear spatial agglomeration patterns. The shift in EWP types displays a "path dependence" effect, with distinct evolutionary paths influenced by spatial lag effects. Ecological input emerges as a key internal driver of EWP, while urbanization and technological advancements are highlighted as significant external factors. Industrial agglomeration and industrial structure also contribute to improving EWP. The findings of this study help to clarify the spatial and temporal characteristics of ecological welfare performance and its driving mechanisms in the urban agglomerations of the Yellow River Basin. This is conducive to the achievement of high-quality urban transformation and regional green development, and it provides a reference for the construction of an ecological civilization. As one of the most vital ecological regions in China, the well-being of the Inner Mongolia section of the Yellow River Basin directly hinges upon comprehending the variations in its ecosystem. The current research puts emphasis on the analysis of single-factor ecological indicators within the Mongolian section of the Yellow River and lacks summarization and analysis regarding the overall state of the ecosystem within the Mongolian section of the Yellow River. This study, using methods such as remote sensing interpretation and model simulation, combined with ground surveys, analyzes the macrostructure, quality status, service functions, and driving factors of the ecosystem in the Inner Mongolia section of the Yellow River Basin from 2000 to 2020. The results indicate that (1) in 2020, the ecosystem structure in the Inner Mongolia section of the Yellow River Basin was predominantly composed of forest, grassland, and other types of systems. (2) From 2000 to 2020, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC), and net primary productivity (NPP) all showed increasing trends in the Inner Mongolia section of the Yellow River Basin, with NPP showing a slightly greater increase compared to the NDVI and FVC. (3) Over the past two decades, the overall rate of decrease in the wind erosion modulus per unit area was 1.675 t hm−2. (4) An analysis of the drivers of ecosystem changes revealed that while climate change has exerted an influence, human activities have likewise had a substantial effect on the ecosystem over the past 20 years. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the current status and changes in the ecosystem, providing a decision-making basis for subsequent ecological protection and management projects. Land use change has a significant impact on the sustainability of ecosystems, and ecological security patterns (ESPs) can improve environmental quality through spatial planning. This study explored a multi-scenario ESP framework by integrating future land use simulation (FLUS) and minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) for urban agglomeration along the Yellow River Basin (YRB) in Ningxia. The research involved simulating land use change in 2035 under four development scenarios, identifying ecological security networks, and evaluating network stability for each scenario. The study revealed that the ecological sources under different development scenarios, including a natural development scenario (NDS), an economic development scenario (EDS), a food security scenario (FSS), and an ecological protection scenario (EPS), were 834.82 km2, 715.46 km2, 785.56 km2, and 1091.43 km2, respectively. The overall connectivity values (OG) for these scenarios were 0.351, 0.466, 0.334, and 0.520, respectively. It was found that under an EPS, the ESPs had the largest area of ecological sources and the most stable ecological network structure, which can effectively protect natural habitats. This study provides a valuable method for identifying ESPs that can respond to diversity and the uncertainty of future development. Studying the carbon effect of land use in watersheds is important for mitigating global warming, promoting coordinated emission reduction in different regions within the watersheds, and realizing high-quality development of the watersheds. Although a number of scholars have carried out relevant studies in the past, they mainly focused on carbon emissions, rarely involved the carbon balance formed by carbon sources and sinks, and lacked relevant studies on the development of low-carbon economy sub-region. Based on this, this study takes the Yellow River Basin as an example, explores the spatial and temporal evolution of carbon emissions from land use in counties in the Yellow River Basin from 1980 to 2020, and predicts the spatial pattern of carbon income and expenditure from land use under natural conditions in 2030 and 2060 using the PLUS model; and then superimposes on the main functional area planning, divides 735 counties in the Yellow River Basin into six low-carbon economic development subregions, and analyzes their economic development The model of their economic development is analyzed. The results show that: (1) the spatial and temporal differentiation of land use carbon balance in the Yellow River Basin has changed greatly over the past 40 years, (2) the spatial distribution pattern of land use carbon balance in the natural context in 2030 and 2060 is more similar to that in 1990, (3) the carbon emission reduction potentials and pattern optimization of the different low-carbon economic development subregions differ greatly, and they have different low-carbon economic development patterns. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for scientifically and rationally formulating economic policies for low-carbon development in the counties of the Yellow River Basin, and also provide an important reference for related studies in other similar basins or regions in the world. Based on the camping sites in the Yellow River Basin published by Amap, this study examines the spatial distribution pattern of camping sites using various indices, including the average nearest neighbor index, geographical concentration index, disequilibrium index, and kernel density estimation. The research findings are as follows: (1) Camping sites exhibit a highly significant agglomeration distribution, and the spatial scale presents a non-equilibrium characteristic of "east dense west sparse". The distribution density of camping sites shows clear hot and cold spots, forming a general pattern of "one belt, one mass, two points". The locations of these camping sites commonly follow the rule of "backing mountains, along roads, and accompanied by scenery". (2) The spatial distribution of camping sites is influenced by both natural factors, such as elevation and air quality, and social factors, such as highway mileage and the number of high-level scenic spots. The assessment and comparison of the S&T innovation competitiveness among the provinces and regions in the Yellow River Basin are helpful to better utilize the supporting and leading role of S&T innovation in the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. Combined with the real characteristics of S&T innovation in the Yellow River Basin, the study considers five dimensions horizontally: S&T innovation input, S&T innovation output, S&T entrepreneurial condition, S&T innovation revenue, and S&T innovation influence. Vertically, it considers two types of indicators, namely, strength and efficiency, and constructs the index system of evaluation of S&T innovation competitiveness in the Yellow River Basin. A multi-dimensional indicator system for measuring the competitiveness of S&T innovation in the Yellow River Basin is constructed, taking into account the differences in scale and efficiency indicators. Based on this, the study analyzes the evolution trend and current situation of S&T innovation competitiveness of the nine provinces and regions in the Yellow River Basin from 2012 to 2021, and further compares the differences in S&T innovation competitiveness among the provinces and regions in the Yellow River Basin. The study finds the followings. (1) The nine provinces and regions in the Yellow River Basin have formed three echelons with significant differences in the level of S&T innovation competitiveness, and the upstream provinces and regions lag behind noticeably in S&T innovation competitiveness. (2) The evaluation results of five horizontal dimensions show that the low level of S&T entrepreneurship conditions and S&T innovation benefit are the key factors constraining the S&T innovation competitiveness of all provinces and regions in the Yellow River Basin. (3) The results of vertical "strength-efficiency" evaluation show that Shandong Province, which is in the first echelon of S&T innovation competitiveness in the Yellow River Basin, should focus on improving its competitive effectiveness in S&T innovation, while the provinces and regions in the third echelon (Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Gansu, Shanxi, and Ningxia) should optimize their competitive strength in S&T innovation. The implementation of the Ecological Conservation and High-Quality Development of the Yellow River Basin (YBCD) can provide the institutional context for economic outcomes of environmental regulations and influences on corporate financial asset allocation. The basic objective of this study is to examine the impact of the YBCD on corporate financialization, analyzing the influencing mechanisms and heterogeneity. Using the data of A-share listed companies spanning 2015 to 2022 in China, this study employs the differences-in-differences method to investigate the impact of the YBCD on corporate financialization. The findings reveal that (1) the YBCD could significantly inhibit corporate financialization and suppress financial asset allocation driven by arbitrage motivation. It will help corporate financial asset allocation shift towards physical businesses, emphasizing long-term development. (2) The YBCD could inhibit corporate financialization by reducing corporate agency costs and fostering environmental, social, and governance (ESG), leading to crowding-out effects on financial assets. (3) The heterogeneity analysis indicates that the YBCD could generate significant inhibitory effects on corporate financialization in non-state-owned enterprises, high-polluting companies, and companies located in regions with stronger environmental regulations. With rapid industrialization and urbanization, the contradiction between the human exploitation of land production and living functions and natural ecosystem service functions has intensified. The issues of how to coordinate the exploitation and conservation functions of land and guide the rational distribution of human activities have become important for global sustainable development, especially considering the realization that multifunctional land use is an effective way to relieve land pressure and improve land use efficiency, that land multifunction has significant spatio-temporal heterogeneity, and that there is a mutual promotion and stress relationship between multifunctional land use. However, few existing studies have discussed the decoupling relationship among land use functions. In this study, a system of 10 sub-functions and 25 indicators was established based on the production function (PDF), living function (LVF), and ecological function (ELF) for 59 cities in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). There are both subjective and objective procedures employed to determine the weights, while an exploratory spatial data analysis is used to analyze the time-based and territorial changes in various functions of land use in the study area from 2000 to 2020. The decoupling relationship between the three functions is detected utilizing the theoretical foundation of the decoupling analysis. The results show that land use is multifunctional, LUFs develop unevenly, and their spatial distribution varies substantially. The results of the decoupling analysis demonstrate that the predominant types of correlations among the land use ELF and PDF and LVF over the research period are strong decoupling and strong negative decoupling correlations, with the former being a dilemma and the latter being a sustainable type of development. Coordinated governance and horizontal ecological compensation are important ways to realize ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River basin. Taking the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River as the research object, this paper analyses the compensation relationship and amount of cities along the line in Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan and Shandong provinces. Firstly, the spillover value of regulation of water flows and erosion prevention of 32 counties along the Yellow River in Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces were calculated during 2000–2010 and 2010–2020 from the perspective of land use/cover change (LUCC). Secondly, the compensation accounting index system was established based on the classification of ecological services given the beneficiaries' individual preferences, and each indicator's weights were determined based on the Best-worst method. Finally, setting the water ecological service value of the 10 km buffer zone on both sides of the Yellow River as the accounting scope, this paper calculated the amount of ecological compensation paid by 16 cities in Shandong and Henan provinces. The results show that: (1) The spillover value of Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces in 2010–2020 is greater than that in 2000–2010, and the values of erosion prevention in both stages are lower than that of regulation of water flows; (2) From the perspective of providers, the highest is 3.68e + 08 yuan in Lvliang from 2000 to 2010, while the highest is 3.60e + 09 yuan in Yulin from 2010 to 2020; (3) From the perspective of beneficiaries, Zhengzhou has the highest amount of compensation in Henan province, which is 2.28e + 08 yuan in 2000–2010 and 9.41e + 08 yuan in 2010–2020 respectively. In Shandong province, Heze pays the highest value of 1.27e + 08 yuan from 2000 to 2010, and Jinan pays the highest value of 9.56e + 08 yuan from 2010 to 2020. The ecological compensation scheme obtained in this paper is more sustainable than the vertical compensation and expands the scope of the existing ecological compensation standards, which can effectively stimulate the enthusiasm for ecological protection, and reduce the financial pressure on the central government.

The Yellow River is the mother river of the Chinese nation and the great cradle for its survival and development. Protecting the Yellow River and promoting the high‑quality development of the Yellow River Basin is a long‑term plan that concerns the great rejuvenation and sustainable development of the Chinese nation. The history of the governance of the Yellow River is also a history of state governance and a history of the development of Chinese civilization. This year marks the third anniversary of General Secretary Xi Jinping’ s September 18 speech at the Yellow River Basin Ecological Protection and High‑quality Development Symposium in Zhengzhou, Henan in 2019. It is also the first anniversary of his October 22 speech at the Symposium on the In‑depth Promotion of Ecological Protection and High‑quality Development of the Yellow River Basin in Jinan, Shandong in 2021. There are nearly 400 development zones above the provincial level in the Yellow River Basin. The rapid expansion of development zones not only drives local economic growth, but also causes problems such as prominent contradiction between land supply and demand, low ef-ficiency of spatial resources allocation and environmental pollution. By establishing DPSIR model, this paper analyzed the evolution trend of de-velopment zones in the Yellow River Basin and the distribution characteristics of leading industries from the perspective of ecological carrying capacity. The results show that the agglomeration characteristics of the development zones of the Yellow River Basin are obvious, the quantity and scale are increased obviously, and the overall ecological carrying capacity of the agglomeration areas in the development zones has been de-creased. The development zones are distributed in the east-west direction, with the trajectory and center of gravity of the national development zones shifting eastward, and the provincial development zones shifting southwest from the overall trajectory and center of gravity, increasing the dispersion degree. There are differences in the spatial distribution of different types of industrial development zones. The leading industrial struc-tures of provincial and national development zones are quite different, and the phenomenon of industrial convergence in some provinces is obvious. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been difficult to revise and adjust the water distribution of the Yellow River in 1987 (1987 water distribution scheme). By gathering data and studies from previous literature, this paper summarized some water distribution ideas, principles and rules in transboundary rivers. We proposed the “synthesis–dynamic–harmonious” water distribution method (SDH), and applied it to the actual conditions of the Yellow River basin. Through the SDH method, we calculated a new scheme for water distribution in the Yellow River and analyzed the results. The key findings of this study are summarized below. Firstly, the water distribution of transboundary rivers required the establishment of advanced water distribution ideas. Secondly, the proposed water distribution method took into account a variety of factors: with the change in distributable water volume, the same ratio changes and meets the minimum water demand and water efficiency constraints. Thirdly, the 1987, the water distribution scheme needed some adjustment. Fourthly, under the new Yellow River basin water distribution scheme (“19ZQT” water distribution scheme), Shandong, Inner Mongolia, and Henan account for 50% of the total water distribution. Sichuan accounts for only 0.3% of the total. Compared with the 1987 water distribution scheme, Hebei and Tianjin reduced the amount of water allocated by 51.2%, while Shaanxi increased it by 24.89%. In this paper, considering the changes in the total distributable water volume, the new Yellow River water distribution scheme (“19ZQT” water distribution scheme) assumed water distribution of 37 billion m3 and 30 billion m3, upon which calculations were performed. This study should provide a scientific and reasonable scheme for water distribution of transboundary rivers, and rational utilization of water resources. It should lay a solid foundation for the high-quality development of the Yellow River basin.

The Yellow River basin (YRB) is China's most critical energy consumption and coal production area. The improvement of carbon emission reduction efficiency in this area is the key for the Chinese government to achieve the 2030 carbon peak and 2060 carbon neutral ("30.60"). Given this, this study first calculates the carbon emission efficiency of YRB from 2005 to 2019 based on the slack-based measured directional distance function (SBM-DDF) model and combined with Malmquist–Luenberger (ML) index and decomposes the carbon emission efficiency of each province. Then, a panel Tobit model with random effect is constructed to measure the influencing factors and their influence degree of carbon emission efficiency of YRB. Finally, the main influencing factors are selected, and policy suggestions on how to improve the carbon emission efficiency of each province are put forward with the help of the coupling coordination degree (CCD) model. The results show that first, the carbon emission efficiency of each province is significantly different, but it shows a fluctuating upward trend on the whole. Second, the reasons for the rise or decline of the ML index in different provinces are different. Therefore, the development strategies of different provinces should be formulated from the perspective of accelerating technological progress and improving technical efficiency. Finally, the calculation results of influencing factors and coupling coordination degrees show that provinces with high coupling coordination degrees should focus on developing per capita power consumption and controlling per capita power consumption to consolidate the actual urbanization process and industrial structure adjustment. Provinces with low coupling coordination degrees should focus on maintaining the urbanization process and increasing the development of the tertiary industry. Therefore, to fundamentally reduce carbon emissions in YRB areas, we need to consider implementing differentiated emission reduction schemes based on national strategic objectives and in combination with the development characteristics of various provinces. Under the contradiction between the shortage of water resources and the increasing water demand for high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin, it is of great significm1ce to analyze the irrigation water efficiency and the impact of irrigation on the groundwater source and ecological protection of the basin. In this paper, many methods were used to analyze the evolution of irrigation water intake and consumption of surface water and groundwater from 1998 to 2019, and the impact of irrigation evolution on groundwater resources. The results show that the irrigation water intake of the Yellow River Basin reaches its peak at the age of 20th century, irrigation water intake and consumption are the most complex changes since 1998; from 1998 to 2019, the surface water irrigation water intake is decreased first and then gradually stabilized, while the groundwater irrigation water intake is decreased year by year, and the proportion of surface water and groundwater irrigation water to the total water intake is decreased by 20%and 10%· respectively. The ecological water supplement and water transfer from the basin becomes the main water consumption of the Yellow River. The water consumption rate of groundwater irrigation decreases year by year and the development of water-saving agriculture significantly reduced the surface evapotranspiration; the Yellow River irrigation plays an important supporting role in stabilizing the groundwater level and replenishing groundwater resources in the irrigation area, and the variation of groundwater storage is significantly correlated with the amount of surface water irrigation in the previous year ( P <0.05). The evolution of canal lining and irrigation methods makes the recharge of irrigation to groundwater resources decrease. High quality development of the Yellow River Basin requires intensive and economical utilization of water resources, and irrigation water intake will he further reduced. It is necessary to coordinate the comprehensive regulation of surface water and groundwater, and promote the ecological protection and the healthy development of economy and society in the strategic area of the Yellow River Basin. In order to deepen the research on the coordination mechanism of ecological protection and economic development of the urban agglomerations in the Yellow River Basin, and to provide references for the research on high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin, taking the Lanzhou-Xi' an urban agglomeration, the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration, the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration, and the Huhhot-Baotou-Erdos-Yulin urban agglomeration, Central China urban agglomeration, Central Shanxi urban agglomeration, and Ningxia urban agglomeration along the Yellow River as the research objects, this paper established an index system according to the four subsystems of ecological environment, economic development, human water relationship, and people' s happiness . It adopted the entropy weight method and the coefficient of variation method to determine the index weights and SMI-P model to calculate the coordination degree between ecologic; J protection and high-quality development, and analyzed the changes in the coordination degree between ecological protection and high-quality development in urban agglomerations along the Yellow River from 2009 to 2018. The results show that the coordination degree of ecological protection and high-quality development of the urban agglomerations along the Yellow River presents a cascade distribution pattern of high in the cast and low in the west (high in the downstream and low in the upper reaches) ; the degree of coordination between protection and high-quality development is rising, and the difference in the degree of coordination among urban agglomerations is gradually decreasing; in 2009, only the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration is in a state of 'close to synergy", while most other urban agglomerations arc in a state of "on the verge of imbalance" ; in 2018, the Central China urban agglomeration and the Huhhot-Baotou-Erdos -Yulin urban agglomeration also reach a state of "close to synergy", while other urban agglomerations are about to reach a state of "close to synergy" ; there arc: significant spatial differences of the coordinated development index among four subsystems (i.e. ecological environment, economic development, human-water relationship, and people' s happiness of each urban agglomeration) . The urban agglomeration with high degree of coordination has a weaker subsystem coordinated development index, while the urban agglomeration with a low degree of coordination has a larger subsystem coordinated development index. Therefore, each urban agglomeration should he adequate to give full play to their respective location advantages and resource advantages, strengthen their weaknesses, and implement differentiated ecological protection and high-quality economic coordinated development. [Objective] The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact path of technological innovation on carbon productivity, give full play to the carbon reduction and efficiency enhancement capabilities of technological innovation, and provide a reference for promoting regional high-quality development and the realization of the dual carbon goals. [Methods] Taking the Yellow River Basin and the Yangtze River Economic Belt as research regions, this study examined the influence path of technological innovation on carbon productivity and the mediation effect of digital finance by constructing a stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology (STIRPAT) model and a mediation effect model respectively. [Results] The results show that: (1) Technological innovation of cities can improve regional carbon productivity levels, and the impact of technological innovation on carbon productivity exhibits regional heterogeneity. The impact of technological innovation on carbon productivity is stronger in the Yangtze River Economic Belt than in the Yellow River Basin. (2) Digital finance can partially mediate the impact of technological innovation on carbon productivity. Technological innovation can improve regional carbon productivity through digital finance. The mediation effect of digital finance is stronger in the Yangtze River Economic Belt than in the Yellow River Basin. (3) Improving the level of urbanization and economic development can promote the improvement of carbon productivity in the Yellow River Basin, and improving the level of urbanization and economic development and accelerating the upgrading of industrial structure can promote the improvement of carbon productivity in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. [Conclusion] This study suggests that local governments should enhance the technological innovation capabilities of cities, promote the deep integration of digital finance and traditional industries, strengthen regional industrial technology exchange and cooperation, promote the green transformation of industries in the Yellow River Basin and the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and ultimately achieve regional low-carbon and sustainable development.
