Significance: Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) is a promising emergent modality for the screening and staging of breast cancer. To minimize barriers to clinical translation, it is common to develop PAT systems based upon existing ultrasound hardware, which can entail significant design challenges in terms of light delivery. This often results in inherently non-uniform fluence within the tissue and should be accounted for during image reconstruction. Aim: We aim to integrate PAT into an automated breast ultrasound scanner with minimal change to the existing system. Approach: We designed and implemented an illuminator that directs spatially non-uniform light to the tissue near the acquisition plane of the imaging array. We developed a graphics processing unit-accelerated reconstruction method, which accounts for this illumination geometry by modeling the structure of the light in the sample. We quantified the performance of this system using a custom, modular photoacoustic phantom and graphite rods embedded in chicken breast tissue. Results: Our illuminator provides a fluence of 2.5 mJ cm−2 at the tissue surface, which was sufficient to attain a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 8 dB at 2 cm in chicken breast tissue and image 0.25-mm features at depths of up to 3 cm in a medium with moderate optical scattering. Our reconstruction scheme is 200× faster than a CPU implementation; it provides a 25% increase in SNR at 2 cm in chicken breast tissue and lowers image error by an average of 31% at imaging depths >1.5 cm compared with a method that does not account for the inhomogeneity of the illumination or the transducer directivity. Conclusions: A fan-shaped illumination geometry is feasible for PAT; however, it is important to account for non-uniform fluence in illumination scenarios such as this. Future work will focus on increasing fluence and further optimizing the ultrasound hardware to improve SNR and overall image quality.

Infection with resistant bacteria has become an ever increasing problem in modern medical practice. Currently, broad spectrum antibiotics are prescribed until bacteria can be identified through blood cultures, a process that can take two to three days and is unable to provide quantitative information. To detect and quantify bacteria rapidly in blood samples, we designed a method using labeled bacteriophage in conjunction with photoacoustic flow cytometry (PAFC). PAFC is the generation of ultrasonic waves created by the absorption of laser light in particles under flow. Bacteriophage is a virus that infects bacteria and possesses the ability to discriminate bacterial surface antigens, allowing the bacteriophage to bind only to their target bacteria. Bacteria can be tagged with dyed phage and processed through a photoacoustic flow cytometer where they are detected by the acoustic response. We demonstrate that E. coli can be detected and discriminated from Salmonella using this method. Our goal is to develop a method to determine bacterial content in blood samples. We hope to develop this technology into future clinical use and decrease the time required to identify bacterial species from 3 to 4 days to less than 1 hour.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are synthetic environmental pollutants previously used for packaging applications as a grease, oil, and water-resistant coating. Exposure reported in previous studies highlighting potential concerns with public health. This study evaluated performance of coated paper packaging used for microwave popcorn, snacks, and sandwich bags for presence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Current paper packaging materials: seven popcorn bags and three snack and sandwich bags were analysed for PFOA and PFOS and compared to concentrations in microwave popcorn bags between 2005 and 2018. Only two microwave popcorn bags had average PFOA content above the limit of quantitation of 5.11 ng g

The effects of alkali-enhanced microwave (MW; 50-175 °C) and ultrasonic (US) (0.75 W/mL, 15-60 min) pretreatments, on solubilisation and subsequent anaerobic digestion efficiency of pulp and paper mill waste-activated sludge, were investigated. Improvements in total chemical oxygen demand and volatile suspended solids (VSS) solubilisation were limited to 33 and 39 % in MW pretreatment only (175 °C). It reached 78 and 66 % in combined MW-alkali pretreatment (pH 12 + 175 °C), respectively. Similarly, chemical oxygen demand and VSS solubilisation were 58 and 37 % in US pretreatment alone (60 min) and it improved by 66 and 49 % after US-alkali pretreatment (pH 12 + 60 min), respectively. The biogas yield for US 60 min-alkali (pH 12)-pretreated sludge was significantly improved by 47 and 20 % over the control and US 60 reactors, respectively. The biogas generation for MW (150 °C)-alkali (pH 12)-pretreated sludge was only 6.3 % higher than control; however, it was 8.3 % lower than the MW (150 °C) reactor, which was due to the inhibition of anaerobic activity under harsh thermal-alkali treatment condition.

Simultaneously ultrasonic wave and microwave assisted technique (SUMAT), as a method of process intensification, was first applied to the preparation of nanocellulose whiskers (NCWs) from filter paper by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. The effects of temperature, sulfuric acid concentration, and mass of raw material and time on the yield of NCWs were investigated by single-factor experiments, and the preparation conditions were optimized with response surface methodology. The obtained NCWs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermal gravimetry. The results showed NCWs were facilely prepared by using SUMAT. However, some harsh reaction conditions such as high temperature, strong acidity and long time treatment easily induced the reduction of the yield of NCWs. Under the optimal conditions, the yield and the crystallinity of NCWs with the crystal form of cellulose Iα is 85.75% and 80%, respectively.

Colloidal silver has gained wide acceptance as an antimicrobial agent, and various substrates coated with nanosilver such as fabrics, plastics, and metal have been shown to develop antimicrobial properties. Here, a simple method to develop coating of colloidal silver on paper using ultrasonic radiation is presented, and the coatings are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution scanning electron microscope (HRSEM), and thermogravimetry (TGA) measurements. Depending on the variables such as precursor concentrations and ultrasonication time, uniform coatings ranging from 90 to 150 nm in thickness have been achieved. Focused ion beam (FIB) cross section imaging measurements revealed that silver nanoparticles penetrated the paper surface to a depth of more than 1 μm, resulting in highly stable coatings. The coated paper demonstrated antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, suggesting its potential application as a food packing material for longer shelf life.

A novel and simple method to detect isothiazolinone-type biocides (2-methyl-3-isothiazolinone (MI), 5-chloro-2-methyl-3-isothiazolinone (CMI), 1,2-benzisothiazolinone (BIT) and 2-octyl-3-isothiazolinone (OIT)) in paper used for food packaging by ultrasonic extraction coupled with UPLC-MS/MS was developed. Parameters affecting process efficiency such as extraction solvents, UPLC mobile phase, gradient elution procedure and MS/MS conditions were studied to optimise the operating conditions. Using the optimised gradient elution procedure, the retention time was less than 6 min. The limits of detection (LODs) were found to be between 0.001 and 0.010 mg kg⁻¹, which was validated using actual concentrations. After diluting the standard solution with a blank matrix, the linear calibration curve ranges were 0.002-1.000 mg kg⁻¹ for BIT and OIT, 0.005-1.000 mg kg⁻¹ for MI, and 0.020-1.000 mg kg⁻¹ for CMI, with correlation coefficients higher than 0.9985 (n = 6). A good level of precision with a mean recovery greater than 81.3% and a relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 6.2% were also obtained. A methodology has been proposed for the analysis of isothiazolinones in paper.

One organic and three alkaline hemicellulosic fractions were isolated by an ultrasound-assisted extraction which partially delignified the fast-growing poplar wood. Successive treatments were conducted with dimethyl sulfoxide under ultrasonic irradiation at 570W, 25 degrees C for 30min, 70% ethanol containing 1% NaOH, 3% NaOH and 6% NaOH at 75 degrees C for 3h, respectively. The four hemicellulosic fractions obtained were comparatively studied by sugar analysis, alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation of bound lignin, GPC, FT-IR, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy as well as TGA and DTA. The results showed that the ultrasonic treatment and sequential extractions with three different concentrations of NaOH led to a release of 75.5% of the original hemicelluloses and 96.2% of the lignin. All four purified hemicellulose fractions contained relatively low amounts of associated lignin, ranging between 0.96 and 3.10%. In addition, the hemicellulosic fraction H(4) isolated with 6% NaOH is formed by a linear backbone of four (beta-1--4)-xylopyranosyl residues and at least one of the xylose residues is monosubstituted at C-2 by a 4-O-methylglucuronic acid, giving a typical ratio of 4-O-methyl glucuronic acid to Xyl of 1 to 4.

In this study, the combination of Fe(3+)/HCl and ultrasonic treatment was applied to selectively hydrolyze cellulose for the preparation of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). It was found that the crystallinity and specific surface area of hydrocellulose samples were higher (78.92% and 2.23581 m(2)g(-1), respectively), compared with the method that only used Fe(3+)/HCl catalyst without ultrasonic treatment. Meanwhile, the hydrolysate can be extracted and reused for cellulose hydrolysis for three runs, which was effective in saving the dosage of chemicals and reducing the pollution of the environment without affecting the properties of hydrocellulose. Moreover, the increased concentration of total reducing sugar (TRS) after three runs may be used as a valuable source in biofuels production. The technology of cellulose hydrolysis, by retaining the crystalline region for MCC products while promoting hydrolysis of amorphous region for further utilization is of great novelty, which may prove valuable in converting biomass into chemicals and biofuels, environmentally and economically.

The commercial production of ethanol from cellulose by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) is prevented in part by the high cost of fungal cellulase enzymes. Intermittent exposure of SSF processes to ultrasonic energy under selected conditions (5 FPU of cellulase/g of substrate; 15 min of exposure/240 min cycle during the latter half of SSF) was found to increase ethanol production from mixed waste office paper by approximately 20%, producing 36.6 g/L ethanol after 96 h (70% of the maximum theoretical yield). Without ultrasound, 10 FPU of cellulase/g of substrate was required to achieve similar results. Continuous exposure of the organism to ultrasonic energy was bacteriostatic and decreased ethanol production but may be useful for the controlling bacterial growth in other processes.

The presence of cocaine on US paper currency has been known for a long time. Banknotes become contaminated during the exchange, storage, and abuse of cocaine. The analysis of cocaine on various denominations of US banknotes in the general circulation can provide law enforcement circles and forensic epidemiologists objective and timely information on epidemiology of illicit drug use and on how to differentiate money contaminated in the general circulation from banknotes used in drug transaction. A simple, nondestructive, and accurate capillary gas chromatographic method has been developed for the determination of cocaine on various denominations of US banknotes in this study. The method comprises a fast ultrasonic extraction using water as a solvent followed by a SPE cleanup process with a C(18) cartridge and capillary GC separation, identification, and quantification. This nondestructive analytical method has been successfully applied to determine the cocaine contamination in US paper currency of all denominations. Standard calibration curve was linear over the concentration range from the LOQ (2.00 ng/mL) to 100 microg/mL and the RSD less than 2.0%. Cocaine was detected in 67% of the circulated banknotes collected in Southeastern Massachusetts in amounts ranging from approximately 2 ng to 49.4 microg per note. On average, $5, 10, 20, and 50 denominations contain higher amounts of cocaine than $1 and 100 denominations of US banknotes.

An ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) method using ethanol was applied for extracting arabinogalactan (AG) and dihydroquercetin (DHQ) simultaneously from larch wood, as a pretreatment for pulping and papermaking. The extraction parameters were optimized by a Box-Behnken experimental design with the yields of AG and DHQ as the response values. Under optimum conditions (three extractions, each using 40% ethanol, for 50 min, 200 W ultrasound power and 1∶18 solid-liquid ratio), the yields of AG and DHQ were 183.4 and 36.76 mg/g, respectively. After UAE pretreated, the wood chips were used for Kraft pulping (KP) and high boiling solvent pulping (HBSP). The pulping yield after pretreatment was higher than that of untreated (the pulping yields of untreated HBSP and KP were 42.37% and 39.60%, and the pulping yields of HBSP and KP after UAE-pretreated were 44.23% and 41.50% respectively), as indicated by a lower kappa number (77.91 and 27.30 for untreated HBSP and KP; 77.01 and 26.83 for UAE-pretreated HBSP and KP). Furthermore, the characteristics of paper produced from pretreated wood chips were superior to those from the untreated chips: the basis weight was lower (85.67 and 82.48 g·cm(-2) for paper from untreated KP and HBSP; 79.94 and 80.25 g·cm(-2) for paper from UAE-pretreated KP and HBSP), and the tensile strengths, tearing strengths, bursting strengths, and folding strengths were higher than these of paper after UAE-pretreated, respectively.

Nondestructive (NDT) and noninvasive ultrasonic techniques have long been used to evaluate the properties and especially the thickness of thin layers. Here, we use this technique adding a new approach to investigate microfiltration of paper mill wastewater, which gives an unexpected sensitivity in the detection of membrane fouling. In situ ultrasonic reflections data can indicate an early fouling deposition at about 30 s after filtration starts, evident by an initial decline in permeate flux. By producing differential signals, obtained by comparing reference and testwaveforms, the fouling process can be detected and monitored. A linear relationship between fouling resistance and the amplitude of differential signals exists. In the case of fouling layer thickness, the resolution exceeds the theoretical limit of h/lambda +/- 0.25, where h is the layer thickness and lambda is the wavelength. When using differential signals, excellent results for thickness measurements were obtained, down to h/lambda = 0.04. Measurements on wavelet transforms support the findings and add quantitative information on other physical properties such as density and porosity of fouling layers and the fouling process. Measurement of early fouling allows (automated) remedial methods to be applied so as to maintain a high flux and therefore improve the filtration process.

The reed pulping black liquor is used as a sample. Researches of (1) combined effect of ultrasound( US)/polyferric sulphate (PFS)/hydrogen peroxide (H2O2); (2) effects of the horn tip areas; (3) effect of dose of PFS were carried. Extrapolation of these experiments indicated treatment results are possibly related to complex chemical compositions in the reed pulping black liquor.

Guided wave theory is applied to a thin orthotropic and absorbing plate for low frequency propagation of ultrasonic waves. The aim of this paper is to give some physical interpretations of the non-destructive characterization of paper materials, which are cellulosic fibrous networks. It is shown that the propagation problem reduces to two normal modes of propagation in the plane of the plate. Each of them depends on four complex and independent stiffnesses that are combinations of elementary complex stiffnesses of the media. The imaginary part of these stiffnesses corresponds to a possible mechanism of energy dissipation during the wave propagation for this kind of material. The reverse problem, which gives four complex values, is then numerically solved using a small attenuation assumption. The specially designed experimental set-up has led to the first measurements of tracing paper damping factors. The phase velocity measurements of the plate waves agree with the results already found by several paper researchers. As a particular and new result, the shear wave velocities are found to present a quasi-isotropic repartition in the plane of the paper sheet. It was found that the absorbing phenomenon can occur for each propagation mode in such a material. The attenuation values are small, except for one of them that corresponds to a coupling term in the propagation model. The anisotropy of their repartition is also shown in the case of quasi-longitudinal waves.

Because contaminants in recycled paper intended for food packaging could be a risk to public health, analytical methods are needed to identify and quantify residues of concern in paper/paperboard. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is considering development of a guidance document for testing levels of contaminants that might be retained through paper recycling processes. An analytical procedure was developed using paper spiked with suspected contaminants at concentrations of 1-50 ppm in the paper. Benzophenone, dimethyl phthalate, anthracene, methyl stearate, and pentachlorophenol were introduced by soaking the paper in a solution in acetone at 25 degrees C for 24 h; the paper was removed and dried by evaporating the solvent with nitrogen. The model contaminant residues were extracted from the paper using ultrasonication and quantified by GC with flame ionization and electron capture detectors. Recoveries from the spiked paper were 80-109% with a repeatability of +/-4%. The method was also used to analyze commercial recycled paperboard to validate its applicability.

The information available on ultrasound field distributions in cleaning baths is limited. Two techniques capable of providing this information have been investigated. The first employs a thermistor probe coated with ultrasound absorbing material and uses the rate of temperature rise when the ultrasound is switched on as a measure of local energy density. A motorized scanning frame has been used to map field distributions in three dimensions using the technique. The second technique, the Sarvazyan (dye/paper) method, uses Astralux paper placed in a bath containing an aqueous solution of methylene blue dye. More dye is transferred to the paper in areas where the ultrasound field is most intense. Pockets of gas are trapped in pores in the paper which provide additional nuclei for initiation of cavitation events and these produce small areas of intense staining about 1 mm in diameter, which are related to cavitational activity. The techniques reveal non-uniformities both in the field distribution and in the pattern of cavitational activity in ultrasound cleaning baths. Methods for assessing ultrasound field distributions are required in order to ensure that energy densities are sufficient to initiate cleaning action throughout ultrasonic cleaning baths.
