This study presents a comparison of the mechanical and barrier properties of papers coated with microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) by two different coating processes: (i) bar coating and (ii) size press. Due to the high water content of MFC, water-treated papers were taken as references to highlight the effects of MFC on the properties of papers. Structural, mechanical and barrier properties of the ensued materials were performed respectively with SEM, tensile and stiffness testers, and air and oxygen permeability equipments. The properties of the water-treated papers were considerably damaged compared to those of the base paper that underlined the negative impact of both coating processes on the papers structure. With MFC, the air barrier and the bending stiffness were considerably improved (+90 and +50 % respectively), especially when the bar coating was used, i.e. with 7 g m of MFC. Size press was indeed not able to considerably improve papers properties as the MFC coat weight barely reached 4 g m resulting from ten successive MFC layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"WEB" is defined as a material that has micron level thickness and used in industries. Some important properties of web media include Co-efficient of friction, Stiffness of media, Absorbing capacity of media, tensile and compressive strength of media etc. Among these characteristics, Co-efficient of friction and Stiffness of web media have an inevitable impact in designing printing machines, textile industry, chemical filtration and refinery industries. This work is aimed towards designing a compact - portable instrument that readily portrays the Static and Dynamic Co-efficient of Friction between any two web media and stiffness of the particular web media under study. This work is particularly useful in newspaper printing presses where the properties of paper can be determined with the help of the machine and the safe stress that can be applied to the paper is determined. This instrument is fully automated and gives the output in digital form. These web media play a dominant role in the printing industries, chemical industries, manufacturing industries and automobile industries too. The article offers information on the examination of interrelationships among caliper, bending, and tensile stiffness of the paper in testing validation. It states that several different proficiencies were utilized to get the same results of the property to analyze the differences. It mentions that the stiffness that were ultrasonically measured and moduli that were utilized to control the relative values of the properties measured. It notes that the bending stiffness of lightweight papers needs strains that are large with the use of conventional instruments.

Within the framework of research work carried out at the Institute of Papermaking and Printing, the Technical University of Łódź, Poisson's ratios were determined in a paper plane. This feature presents a simple and easy method how to determine this material constant. The method proposed for the determination of Poisson's ratio utilises the results of typical procedures used when defining physical properties, such as Young's modulus, paper density and the TSI (tensile stiffness index). For practical verification of the method proposed, the author tested papers for the production of corrugated board and compared the values of ratios obtained for the propagation velocity of sonic waves in the machine and cross directions.
