To ensure food safety and environmental protection, it is crucial to rapidly identify and remove bisphenol A (BPA), a plasticizer commonly used in the inner lining of food containers and beverage packaging. Here, a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC)-integrated self-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor is constructed. Unlike conventional single PEC or PFC sensors, this PFC-integrated PEC sensor relies on not only the difference in Fermi energy levels between photoanode and photocathode but also charge accumulation resulted from the oxidation of BPA by photogenerated holes. Consequently, this sensor achieved a remarkable maximum output power (P max ) of 8.58 μW cm -2 , as well as a high sensitivity, wide linear detection range (0.1-200 μM), low detection limit (0.05 μM), great stability, reproducibility, and real sample detection capability. Introduction: Bisphenol A (BPA), an organic compound used to produce polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, has become a ubiquitous contaminant due to its high-volume production and constant release to the environment. Plant metabolomics can trace the stress effects induced by environmental contaminants to the variation of specific metabolites, making it an alternative way to study pollutants toxicity to plants. Nevertheless, there is an important knowledge gap in metabolomics applications in this area., Objective: Evaluate the influence of BPA in French lettuce (Lactuca Sativa L. var capitata) leaves metabolic profile by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using a hydroponic system., Methods: Lettuces were cultivated in the laboratory to minimize biological variation and were analyzed 55 days after sowing (considered the plant's adult stage). Hexanoic and methanolic extracts with and without derivatization were prepared for each sample and analyzed by GC-MS., Results: The highest number of metabolites was obtained from the hexanoic extract, followed by the derivatized methanolic extract. Although no physical differences were observed between control and contaminated lettuce leaves, the multivariate analysis determined a statistically significant difference between their metabolic profiles. Pathway analysis of the most affected metabolites showed that galactose metabolism, starch and fructose metabolism and steroid biosynthesis were significantly affected by BPA exposure., Conclusions: The preparation of different extracts from the same sample permitted the determination of metabolites with different physicochemical properties. The neurotoxicity of bisphenol A (BPA) exposure has been confirmed in vitro and in vivo , and inflammatory response is considered the main pathway. Green tea is a healthy life habit as it is rich in various anti-inflammatory components. To confirm that green tea diet is an effective measure to antagonize BPA-induced neurotoxicity, mice were treated with 0.5 and 5000 μg/kg/day of BPA from postnatal days (PNDs) 10-50 and supplemented with green tea on PND 21. From PND 51, behavioral tests were conducted on mice to assess their emotional, cognitive, and spatial learning memory capabilities. The open field test and elevated plus maze test indicated anxiety-like behaviors induced by BPA. Interestingly, green tea diet significantly alleviated BPA-induced anxiety-like behaviors. Meanwhile, the green tea diet effectively reversed BPA-induced microglia activation and morphological changes in the hippocampus of mice. Molecularly, green tea inhibited hippocampal neuroinflammation of mice by reducing BPA-induced expressions of NLRP3, ASC, cleaved-caspase-1, GSDMD-N, IL-6, and IL-1β, as well as significantly reducing the expression of Bak1, Bax, caspase-9, and Cytc c genes ( p < 0.05). Molecular docking suggests that various anti-inflammatory components of green tea can competitively bind to the estrogen receptors with BPA. In general, a green tea diet alleviates BPA-induced emotional disorders by inhibiting microglial polarization and hippocampal pyroptosis, indicating its effective antagonistic ability against the neurotoxicity induced by environmental BPA exposure.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a typical environmental endocrine disruptor, has raised concerns among researchers due to its toxicological effects. Whether neohesperidin (NEO) can intervene in the toxic effects of BPA remains unknown. This study aims to investigate the effects and mechanisms of NEO on the myogenic differentiation of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) exposed to BPA. Sheep UC-MSCs were isolated, characterized, and induced to myogenic differentiation. BPA decreased cell viability, cell migration, and the expressions of myogenic marker genes, leading to myogenic differentiation inhibition, which were reversed by NEO. Network pharmacology suggested the IGF1R/AKT1/RHOA pathway as potential targets of BPA and NEO regulating muscle development. Western blot results showed that NEO could reverse the down-regulation of the pathway proteins induced by BPA, and counteract the effects of picropodophyllin (PPP) or MK-2206 dihydrochloride (MK-2206) in the myogenic differentiation of sheep UC-MSCs. Additionally, the expression levels of (p-) IGF1R, AKT1, and RHOA were positively correlated. Taken together, the mechanisms of NEO resistance to BPA involved the IGF1R/AKT1/RHOA signaling pathway. Microbial metabolism in landfill leachate systems is critically important in driving the degradation reactions of organic pollutants, including the emerging pollutant bisphenol A (BPA). However, little research has addressed the microbial degradation of BPA in landfill leachate and its interactions with nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), and methane (CH 4 ) metabolism on a global scale. To this end, in this study on a global scale, an extremely high concentration of BPA was detected throughout the global landfill leachates. Subsequent reconstructive analyses of metagenomic datasets from 113 sites worldwide revealed that the predominant BPA-degrading microflora included Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidota. Further metabolic analyses revealed that all four biochemical pathways involved in the degradation of BPA were achieved through biochemical cooperation between different bacterial members of the community. In addition, BPA degraders have also been found to actively collaborate synergistically with non-BPA degraders in the N and S removal as well as CH 4 catabolism in landfill leachates. Collectively, this study not only provides insights into the dominant microbial communities and specific types of BPA-degrading microbial members in the community of landfill leachates worldwide, but also reveals the synergistic interactions between BPA mineralization and N, S, and CH 4 metabolism. Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues (BPAF, BPS) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants used as plastic additives in various daily life products, with many concerns on their role as environmental estrogens. Uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) are highly prevalent gynecologic tumors with progressive fibrosis. Fibroids are hormone-responsive and may be the target of environmental estrogens. However, the effects of BPA, BPAF, and BPS exposure on uterine fibrosis are largely unknown. Here, we evaluated fibrosis and the crucial role of TGF-beta signaling in human fibroid tumors, the profibrotic effects of BPA, BPAF or BPS in a human 3D uterine leiomyoma (ht-UtLM) in vitro model, and the long-term outcomes of BPAF exposure in rat uterus. In 3D ht-UtLM spheroids, BPA, BPAF, and BPS all promoted cell proliferation and fibrosis by increasing the production of extracellular matrices. Further mechanistic analysis showed the profibrotic effects were induced by TGF-beta signaling activation mainly through SMAD2/3 pathway and crosstalk with multiple non-SMAD pathways. Furthermore, the profibrotic effects of BPAF were supported by observation of uterine fibrosis in vivo in rats following long-term BPAF exposure. Overall, the 3D ht-UtLM spheroid can be an important model for investigating environment-induced fibrosis in uterine fibroids. A common industrial chemical known as bisphenol A (BPA) has been linked to endocrine disruption and can interfere with hormonal signaling pathways in humans and animals. This comprehensive review aims to explore the detrimental consequences of BPA on reproductive organ performance and apoptosis induction, shedding light on the emerging body of evidence from laboratory animal studies. Historically, most studies investigating the connection between BPA and reproductive tissue function have mainly leaned on laboratory animal models. These studies have provided crucial insights into the harmful effects of BPA on several facets of reproduction. This review consolidates an increasing literature that correlates exposure to BPA in the environment with a negative impact on human health. It also integrates findings from laboratory studies conducted on diverse species, collectively bolstering the mounting evidence that environmental BPA exposure can be detrimental to both humans and animals, particularly to reproductive health. Furthermore, this article explores the fundamental processes by which BPA triggers cell death and apoptosis in testicular cells. This study explored Mason pine-derived hydrochar (MPHC) as an effective adsorbent and persulfate (PS) activator for degrading bisphenol A (BPA). Increasing MPHC dosage from 0.25 to 2.0 g L -1 raised BPA removal from 42% to 87%. Similarly, at the same MPHC dosage range and fixed PS concentration (8 mM), BPA removal by MPHC/PS increased from 66% to 91%. Additionally, at a fixed MPHC dosage (1.0 g L -1 ), higher PS concentrations (2-32 mM) resulted in an overall BPA removal increase from 78% to 99%. The optimal pH for BPA removal by MPHC was at pH 3, while for MPHC/PS was at pH 9. BPA degradation by MPHC was optimal at pH 3, whereas MPHC/PS was at pH 3 and pH 9. Additionally, pH 7 favored BPA adsorption for both MPHC and MPHC/PS. The study also considered the influence of coexisting anions and humic acid (HA). PO 4 3- and NO 3 - influence adsorption on MPHC, but these anions' effect on MPHC/PS is limited. Furthermore, the existence of HA had minimal influence on BPA removal by MPHC/PS. The contributions of different reactive species by MPHC for BPA degradation are as follows: electron-hole (h + ) 2%, singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) 7%, superoxide radicals (O 2 •- ) 13%, electron (e - ) 2%, hydroxyl radical ( • OH) 3%, whereas the remaining 48% removal was the contribution of adsorption. For MPHC/PS, adsorption accounted for 39 %, more reactive species were involved in degradation, and the donations are (h + ) 3%, sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ) 3%, ( 1 O 2 ) 19%, (O 2 •- ) 15%, (e - ) 2%, and ( • OH) 2%. Additionally, the performance of MPHC remains stable after three operational cycles. The preparation cost of MPHC is 3.01 € kg -1 . Given the increasing concern about chemical exposure from textiles, our study examines the risks of dermal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol B (BPB) and bisphenol F (BPF) from conventional and recycled textiles for adults, aiming to obtain new data, assess exposure, and evaluate the impact of washing on bisphenol levels. A total of 57 textile samples (33 from recycled and 24 from conventional material) were subjected to ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry analysis (UHPLC-MS/MS). The BPA and BPS concentrations varied widely (BPA: < 0.050 to 625 ng/g, BPS: 0.277-2,474 ng/g). The median BPA content in recycled textiles (13.5 ng/g) was almost twice as high as that of 7.66 ng/g in conventional textiles. BPS showed a median of 1.85 ng/g in recycled textiles and 3.42 ng/g in conventional textiles, indicating a shift from BPA to BPS in manufacturing practices. Simulated laundry experiments showed an overall reduction in bisphenols concentrations after washing. The study also assessed potential health implications via dermal exposure to dry and sweat-wet textiles compared to a tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 0.2 ng/kg bw/day for BPA set by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Exposure from dry textiles remained below this threshold, while exposure from wet textiles often exceeded it, indicating an increased risk under conditions that simulate sweating or humidity. In this study, the pressing issue of persistent organic pollutants in wastewater was addressed by designing and fabricating a magnetically separable MnFe 2 O 4 /rGO heterostructure catalyst for efficient mineralization of bisphenol A (BPA) and dyes such as alizarin red S (anionic) and malachite green (cationic), which are known for their resistance to biodegradation and carcinogenic properties. Comprehensive structural and surface analyses using XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM/HRTEM coupled with magnetic and optical property measurements revealed the formation of the MnFe 2 O 4 /rGO heterostructures. Among all, the MnFe 2 O 4 /rGO-10 catalyst with 10% wt% of rGO exhibited 100% efficiency in the mineralization of BPA and both dyes under visible light illumination within 60 min. The stability and recyclability of the catalyst, assessed through XRD and VSM studies, demonstrated its consistent performance over multiple uses. The cost-effectiveness and stability of this catalyst underscore its potential for practical application in wastewater treatment, offering a viable solution to the persistent challenge of removing stubborn organic contaminants., (© 2024. Purpose: This study investigated the potential of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D 3 (1,25(OH) 2 VD 3 ) to mitigate bisphenol A (BPA)-induced apoptosis in human ovarian granulosa KGN cells with the aim of establishing a theoretical foundation for understanding of how vitamin D improved ovarian function in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)., Methods: The impact of varying concentrations of BPA and 1,25(OH) 2 VD 3 on KGN cell viability was elucidated. It was established that BPA-induced apoptosis in KGN cells. Subsequently, KGN cells underwent pretreatment with 1,25(OH) 2 VD 3 , followed by exposure to BPA. The apoptosis rate, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and mitochondrial function of the cells were meticulously assessed, along with the expression levels of genes associated with apoptosis as well as antioxidant and mitochondrial biogenesis., Results: BPA induced a notable increase in apoptosis (P < 0.001) and oxidative stress (P < 0.001) in KGN cells, accompanied by a significant reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential (P < 0.001) and severe impairment of mitochondrial function. Following pretreatment of KGN cells with 1,25(OH) 2 VD 3 , there was a significant decrease in the apoptosis rate (P = 0.004), coupled with a reduction in ROS production (P = 0.002). Concomitantly, the upregulation of PGC-1α (P = 0.009) and SOD (P = 0.018) was observed, while mRNA expression of BAX (P = 0.011), Cyt c (P = 0.001), Apaf-1 (P = 0.012), caspase-9 (P < 0.001), and caspase-3 (P = 0.011) was downregulated. Notably, the mitigation of mitochondrial damage was evident through restored mitochondrial membrane potential (P < 0.001), as corroborated by electron microscope results., Conclusions: 1,25(OH) 2 VD 3 mitigated BPA-induced damage and apoptosis in KGN cells by upregulating the expression of PGC-1α and impeding the mitochondrial cytochrome c (Cyt c) apoptotic pathway. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic chemical primarily utilized in the manufacturing of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins that are present in various consumer products. While the BPA impacts on female reproductive toxicity have been widely investigated, very little is currently identified about the mixed toxicity of BPA and bisphenol AF (BPAF), another common BPA derivative that is used in many industrial applications. In this study, we assessed the effect of co-exposure of BPA (30 and 50 μM) and BPAF (3 and 5 μM) on mitochondrial dysfunction in human granulosa cells (KGN cells) for 24 h. Our results exhibited that high-concentration bisphenol individual or their mixture exposure of KGN cells induced significant mitochondrial dysfunction by reducing mitochondrial mass, reducing ATP production, and damaging the mitochondrial respiratory chain. In addition, we found that the combination of BPA and BPAF significantly induced mitochondrial stress by increasing calcium levels and the production of ROS in mitochondria. Mitochondrial stress induced by BPA and BPAF was determined to be a mechanism that promoted cell apoptosis after pretreating the cells with the mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant and the calcium chelator. Background: Current evidence suggests that the etiology of gender dysphoria (GD) is multifactorial: this, however, remains unclear. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are one of the etiological hypotheses., Objectives: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the urinary levels of bisphenol A (BPA), thiamethoxam, and fipronil in hormone-naïve transmen compared with case-matched cis-women as well as the relation between sex hormone levels and EDCs., Methods: Drug-naïve transmen diagnosed with GD and who were referred from the psychiatry outpatient clinic to the outpatient clinic of the Department of Endocrinology, Marmara University Hospital, were included in the study. These individuals were assessed for eligibility; 38 drug-naïve transmen and 22 cis-women were recruited as the control group. After anthropometric evaluation laboratory tests for FSH, LH, total testosterone, and estradiol were carried out, spot urine samples were collected to evaluate the urine metabolic excretion of BPA, thiamethoxam, and fipronil., Results: We found that androgens, total testosterone, androstenedione, and DHEAS levels were significantly higher in transmen than in cis-women. Thiamethoxam was considerably higher in cis-women than in transmen, whereas fipronil and BPA levels were similar in both groups. A negative correlation was found between thiamethoxam and testosterone and between thiamethoxam and BPA levels., Conclusion: The available data suggest that the EDCs that we are most exposed to in our lives are not the only factor in GD development. Even transmen who have not taken hormone replacement have high testosterone levels; however, the mechanism has not as yet been elucidated. With the increasing production and demand of plastic products in life, inescapable bisphenol A (BPA) exposure results in a threat to the health of organisms. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for living organisms. The insufficient Se intake can cause multi-tissue organ damage. In the process of production and life, the exposure of BPA is usually accompanied by Se deficiency. In this study, the models of chicken with BPA exposure and/or Se deficiency was duplicated, the status of nitrification stress, apoptosis, necroptosis, and changes in TNF-α/FADD signaling pathways in chicken spleen were examined. At the same time, nitrification stress inhibitor and TNF-α inhibitor were introduced into MSB-1 cell model tests in vitro, indicating that BPA exposure and Se deficiency up-regulated TNF-α/FADD signaling pathway through nitrification stress, inducing necroptosis and apoptosis, and heat shock protein was also involved in this process. Bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread environmental contaminant, poses concerns due to its disruptive effects on physiological functions of the uterine endometrium. In contrast, melatonin (MT) and Resveratrol (RSV) are under scrutiny for their potential protective roles against BPA-induced damage. For the efficacy and ethical concerns in the animal test, endometrial organoids, three-dimensional models mimicking endometrium, serve as crucial tools for unraveling the impact of environmental factors on reproductive health. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize the morphological, molecular and metabolic responses of porcine endometrial organoids to BPA and assess the potential protective effects of MT and RSV. Porcine uteri were prepared, digested with collagenase, mixed with Matrigel, and incubated at 38°C with 5 % CO 2 . Passaging involved dissociation through trypsin-EDTA treatment and subculturing. The culture medium was refreshed every 2-3 days. To investigate the environmental impact on reproductive health, endometrial organoids were treated with BPA (0.5 µM), MT (with/without BPA at 0.1 µM), and/or RSV (10 µM). Various molecular screening using gene expression, western blotting, immunofluorescence staining, and metabolites profiling were assessed the effects of BPA, MT, and RSV in terms of cell viability, morphology, reproductivity, and metabolism alteration in the endometrial organoids. As expected, BPA induced structural and molecular disruptions in organoids, affecting cytoskeletal proteins, Wnt/β-catenin signaling, and epithelial/mesenchymal markers. It triggered oxidative stress and apoptotic pathways, altered miRNA expression, and disrupted the endocannabinoid system. The level of glucose, galactose, and essential amino acids were increased or decreased by approximately 1.5-3 times in BPA-treated groups compared to the control groups (p-value < 0.05), indicating metabolic changes. Moreover, MT and RSV treated groups exhibited protective effects, mitigating BPA-induced disruptions across multiple pathways. Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine-disrupting contaminant, is ubiquitous in the environment due to its presence in plastics, wastewater, and agricultural runoff. This study investigated the photodegradation behavior of BPA in coastal aquaculture waters near Qingdao, China. Lower salinity promoted BPA photodegradation, while higher salinity has an inhibitory effect, suggesting slower degradation in seawater compared to ultrapure water. Triplet-excited dissolved organic matter ( 3 DOM*) was identified as the primary mediator of BPA degradation, with additional contributions from hydroxyl radicals ( • OH), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and halogen radicals (HRS). Alepocephalidae aquaculture water exhibited the fastest degradation rate, likely due to its high DOM and nitrate/nitrite (NO 3 - /NO 2 - ) content, which are sources of 3 DOM* and • OH. A positive correlation existed between NO 3 - /NO 2 - concentration and the BPA degradation rate. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) analysis identified the primary BPA photodegradation products, formed mainly through oxidative degradation, hydroxyl substitution, nitration, and chlorination pathways. Elucidating these photodegradation mechanisms provides valuable insights into the environmental fate and potential ecological risks of BPA in aquaculture environments. Our investigation revealed that the combined exposure of E122 and BPA at beverage concentration significantly induces mortality and morphological deformities, including reduced growth, pericardial edema, and yolk sac edema. The co-exposure triggers oxidative stress, impairing antioxidant enzyme responses and resulting in lipid and cellular damage. Notably, apoptotic cells are observed in the neural tube and notochord of the co-exposed larvae. Critical genes related to the antioxidant response elements (nrf2, ho1, and nqo1), apoptosis activation (bcl2, bax, and p53), and pro/anti-inflammatory cytokines (nfkb, tnfa, il1b, tgfb, il10, and il12) displayed substantial changes, highlighting the molecular mechanisms. Behavior studies indicated hypo-locomotion with reduced thigmotaxis and touch response in co-exposed larvae, distinguishing it from individual exposures. Bisphenol A (BPA) and its substitute fluorene-9-bisphenol (BHPF) are used in consumer products; however, their toxic effects on intestinal epithelium remain largely unknown. In this study, we combined intestinal organoids and single-cell RNA sequencing to investigate the impact of BPA and BHPF exposure on intestinal cell composition, differentiation, and function. Both compounds inhibited the growth of small intestinal organoids, with BHPF exhibiting a more potent inhibitory effect. BPA and BHPF did not significantly alter the overall cell type composition; however, they led to different alterations in cell-cell communications. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis showed that BPA and BHPF exposures affected various biological processes, such as glutathione transferase activity, antioxidant activity, and lipid metabolism, in cell type-specific and compound-dependent manners. Trajectory analysis demonstrated that BPA and BHPF altered the differentiation trajectory of the intestinal cells. To further connect the cellular mechanism to the phenotypic impact in vivo, we constructed a mouse model exposed to BPA or BHPF and observed significant alterations in intestinal morphology, including reduced crypt depth and villus length and impaired stem cell proliferation and self-renewal. These results provide novel insights into the cell type-specific effects of BPA and BHPF on the intestinal epithelium and highlight the potential risks of exposure to these compounds. In this study, cost-effective alkali-activated materials made from industrial side streams (blast furnace slag and Na-jarosite) were developed for catalytic applications. The catalytic activity of the prepared materials was examined in catalytic wet peroxide oxidation reactions of a bisphenol A in an aqueous solution. All materials prepared revealed porous structure and characterisation expressed the incorporation of iron to the material via ion exchange in the preparation step. Furthermore, the materials prepared exhibited high specific surface areas (over 200 m 2 /g) and were mainly mesoporous. Moderate bisphenol A removal percentages (35%-37%) were achieved with the prepared materials during 3 h of oxidation at pH 7-8 and 50°C. Moreover, the activity of catalysts remained after four consecutive cycles (between the cycles the catalysts were regenerated) and the specific surface areas decreased only slightly and no changes in the phase structures were observed. Thus, the prepared blast furnace slag and Na-jarosite-based catalysts exhibited high mechanical stability and showed good potential in the removal of bisphenol A from wastewater through catalytic wet peroxide oxidation.

This study investigated the toxic effects of Bisphenol A (BPA) on the Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) using in vitro assays with primary cultured hemocytes. The abalone hemocytes were exposed to BPA concentrations up to 100 μM to assess cytotoxicity. Subsequently, hemocytes were exposed to sublethal BPA concentrations (LC 20  = 2.3 μM and LC 50  = 5.8 μM) for 48 h, and we evaluated the cellular immune responses of hemocytes via flow cytometry. Results showed no significant differences between LC 20 and control groups, but LC 50 exposure significantly reduced phagocytosis and oxidative capacities while increasing nitric oxide production. These findings suggest that BPA exposure negatively affects the immune system of the Pacific abalone, which makes them more susceptible to infections and other stressors in their natural environment. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are toxic pollutants generated by artificial activities. Moreover, their hormone-like structure induces disturbances, such as mimicking or blocking metabolic activity. Previous studies on EDCs have focused on the adverse effect of the endocrine system in vertebrates, with limited investigations conducted on ion channels in invertebrates. Thus, in this study, we investigated the potential adverse effects of exposure to bisphenol-A (BPA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) at the molecular level on the ryanodine receptor (RyR), a calcium ion channel receptor in Macrophthalmus japonicus. In the phylogenetic analysis, the RyR amino acid sequences in M. japonicus clustered with those in the Crustacean and formed separated branches for RyR in insects and mammals. When exposed to 1 μg L -1 BPA, a significant increase in RyR mRNA expression was observed in the gills on day 1, although a similar level to the control group was observed from day 4 to day 7. However, the RyR expression due to DEHP exposure decreased on days 1 and 4, although it increased on day 7 following exposure to 10 μg L -1 . The RyR expression pattern in the hepatopancreas increased for up to 4 days, depending on the BPA concentration. However, there was a tendency for the expression to decrease gradually after the statistical significance increased during the early stage of DEHP exposure (D1). Bisphenol A (BPA) is a commonly used environmental toxicant, is easily exposed to the human body and causes testicular damage, sperm abnormalities, DNA damage and apoptosis, and interferes in the process spermatogenesis and steroidal hormone production along with obstruction in testes and epididymis development. Zinc (Zn), a potent regulator of antioxidant balance, is responsible for cellular homeostasis, enzymes and proteins activities during spermatogenesis for cell defence mechanisms in the testes. Selenium (Se) is required for spermatogenesis, antioxidant action and in the activities of different selenoproteins. Both Zn and Se are essential simultaneously for the proper regulation of spermatogenesis and sperm maturation as well as protection against chemical and disease-associated germ cell toxicity. Thus, the study aimed to understand the importance and beneficial effect of Zn and Se co-treatment against BPA-exposed testicular damage in rats. BPA 100 and 200 mg/kg/day was exposed through an oral gavage. Zn (3 mg/kg/day) i.p. and Se (0.5 mg/kg/day) i.p. were injected for 8 weeks. The testicular toxicity was evaluated by measuring body and organs weight, biochemical investigations, sperm parameters, testicular and epididymal histopathology, quantification DNA damage by halo assay, DNA breaks (TUNEL assay), immunohistochemistry and western blot. Results revealed that Zn and Se co-treatment ameliorated BPA-associated male gonadal toxicity in rat as revealed by decreased SGPT, SGOT and BUN levels in serum, reduced testes and epididymis tissue injury, DNA breaks, apoptosis, expressions of 8-OHdG, γ-H2AX and NFκB with an increased serum testosterone and catalase levels. Background/ Objectives: Rosacea is a common chronic inflammatory skin disorder. Endocrinedisrupting chemicals (EDC) are toxic substances, that may gain entry through the skin and subsequently interfere with hormonal and immune functions. Bisphenol A (BPA) and pentachlorophenol sodium (PCS) are two of these EDCs, incriminated in the pathogenesis of certain inflammatory skin disorders. We aimed to test the hypothesis that exposure to BPA and PCS might be involved in the pathogenesis of rosacea., Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study involved 34 patients with rosacea (18F/16 M; mean age 48.5 ± 11 years) and 34 age and sex-matched healthy controls (20 F/14 M; mean age 48.2 ± 10.2 years). Main anthropometric measures, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), insulin, HOMA-IR, lipids, C-reactive protein (CRP), BPA, and PCS levels were quantified and recorded., Results: Serum CRP (9.6 ± 3.4 vs. 3.7 ± 1.6 mg/L, respectively, p0.05 for all). Serum BPA levels were 55.8 ± 14.4 and 51.9 ± 19.2 ng/mL, and PCS levels were 63.3 ± 45.9 ng/mL and 68.6 ± 40.8 ng/mL for patients and healthy controls, respectively. There was no significant difference in BPA and PCS levels between the two groups ( p  > 0.05 for both). No significant association was found among HOMAIR, CRP, BPA, and PCS levels ( p  > 0.05 for all)., Conclusions: Although the present study fails to provide presumptive evidence for the role of BPA and PCS in rosacea, the question as to other EDCs might be involved in its etiopathogenesis remains. This hypothesis requires confirmation in large-scale future prospective trials.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a component of polycarbonate plastics that has been implicated in memory impairment. The present study investigated the effect of carnosic acid (CA) on memory deficit induced by BPA and the role of Akt in this mechanism. First, SH-SY5Y cells were treated with 20 nM BPA and 1 μM CA for 12 h. The results showed that treatment of CA with BPA improved the alternation of IRS-1/Akt/GSK-3β as well as the induction of ApoE and Ser396 p-tau. Moreover, treatment of CA with BPA restored the signaling involved in long-term potentiation (LTP) effect, leading to induction of synaptic-related proteins, such as PSD-95, synapsin1a, and pro-BDNF. Wortmannin treatment alleviated the reversal by CA. Then, C57BL/6 J male mice were orally administered with CA to test the memory function in BPA treatment. The results showed that CA and RE can improve BPA-induced impairment of motor, recognition, and spatial memory by using open-field test (OFT), novel objective recognition test (NOR), and Y-maze test, respectively. Moreover, CA and RE improved the phosphorylation of tau and the reduction of PSD-95, synapsin1a, and pro-BDNF proteins induced by BPA. Background: Bisphenol A (BPA), a characteristic endocrine disruptor, is a substance that seriously interferes with the human endocrine system and causes reproductive disorders and developmental abnormalities. However, its toxic effects on the gut-liver-hormone axis are still unclear., Method: Male and female rats were exposed to BPA (300 mg/kg) by oral gavage for 60 consecutive days. H&E staining was used for histopathological evaluation, and the serum biochemical indexes were determined using an automatic analyzer. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to detect the intestinal microbial diversity, and the GC-MS was used to analyze the contents of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in colon contents. UPLC-QTOF MS was used to analyze the related metabolites. The ELISA method was used to assess the levels of serum inflammatory factors., Results: Histopathological analysis indicated that the liver, heart, and testis were affected by BPA. There was a significant effect on alanine aminotransferase (ALT), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the male-BPA group (P < 0.05), and globulin (GLB), indirect bilirubin (IBIL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), ALT, TG, TC, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and creatinine (Cr) in the female-BPA group (P < 0.05). Metagenomics (16S rRNA gene sequencing) analysis indicated that BPA reduced the diversity and changed the composition of gut microbiota in rats significantly. Compared with the control and blank groups, the contents of caproic acid, isobutyric acid, isovaleric acid, and propanoic acid in the colon contents decreased in the male-BPA group (P < 0.05), and caproic acid, isobutyric acid, isovaleric acid, and valeric acid in the colon contents decreased in the female-BPA group (P < 0.05). Metabolomic analysis of the serum indicated that BPA could regulate bile acid levels, especially ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and its conjugated forms. The contents of amino acids, hormones, and lipids were also significantly affected after exposure to BPA. In the era dominated by plastic, the widespread use of plastic in our daily lives has led to a growing accumulation of its degraded byproducts, such as microplastics and plastic additives like Bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is recognized as one of the earliest man-made substances that exhibit endocrine-disrupting properties. It is frequently employed in the manufacturing of epoxy resins, polycarbonates, dental fillings, food storage containers, infant bottles, and water containers. BPA is linked to a range of health issues including obesity, diabetes, chronic respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and reproductive abnormalities. This study examines the bacterial bioremediation of the BPA, which is found in many sources and is known for its hazardous effects on the environment. The metabolic pathways for the breakdown of BPA in important bacterial strains were hypothesized based on the observed altered intermediate metabolites during the degradation of BPA. This review discusses the enzymes and genes involved in the bacterial degradation of BPA. Background: There is growing evidence indicating that environmental endocrine disruptors may influence the development of prostate cancer. Despite this, the connection between BPA and PSA levels is still not fully understood and appears intricate. In this study, we aimed to assess the link between BPA exposure and PSA levels using data from the NHANES database., Methods: We conducted a weighted linear regression, logistic regression analysis, natural cubic spline (NCS), subgroup analysis, and interaction analysis on 2768 participants. Urinary BPA was considered the independent variable, while PSA was the dependent variable., Results: In the study, the average age of the participants selected was 62.70 years (±12.93). Age was negatively correlated with BPA, while PSA and BMI were positively correlated with BPA concentration (all of the p -value < 0.05). In the fully adjusted model, the weighted linear and logistic regression results showed that BPA was positively correlated with PSA and prostate cancer. NCS analysis results show that BPA and PSA have a non-linear relationship. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses showed similar results. In addition, there were interactions between BPA and age, PIR, education, HbA1c, high-density lipoprotein, smoking status, and Diabetes., Conclusions: There was a positive correlation between urinary BPA and PSA in older American males, especially when the BPA concentration was higher than 4.46 ng/mL. In future practical applications of prostate cancer screening, it is crucial to focus on individuals aged 75 years and older, as well as those with a PIR between 0 and 1, non-Hispanic black, and other risk groups to provide reference values for the primary and secondary prevention of prostate cancer.

Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disrupter with estrogen activity, can infiltrate animal and human bodies through the food chain. Enzymatic degradation of BPA holds promise as an environmentally friendly approach while it is limited due to lower stability and recycling challenges. In this study, laccase from Bacillus pumilus TCCC 11568 was expressed in Pichia pastoris (fLAC). The optimal catalytic conditions for fLAC were at pH 6.0 and 80 °C, with a half-life T 1/2 of 120 min at 70 °C. fLAC achieved a 46 % degradation rate of BPA, and possible degradation pathways were proposed based on identified products and reported intermediates of BPA degradation. To improve its stability and degradation capacity, a whole-cell biocatalyst (WCB) was developed by displaying LAC (dLAC) on the surface of P. pastoris GS115. The functionally displayed LAC demonstrated enhanced thermostability and pH stability along with an improved BPA degradation ability, achieving a 91 % degradation rate. Additionally, dLAC maintained a degradation rate of over 50 % after the fourth successive cycles. Molecularly imprinted polymer with water-compatibility for effective separation and enrichment of targeted trace pollutants from complicated matrix has captured extensive attention in terms of their high selectivity and matrix compatibility. This study focuses on modified β-cyclodextrin is used as a hydrophilic functional monomer to develop magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs). MMIPs were prepared using Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as carriers and bisphenol A (BPA) as templates using a two-step fixation strategy and surface imprinting technology. The structural characteristic and binding properties of the prepared MMIPs were thoroughly studied. The MMIPs exhibited high crystallinity, high adsorption capacity, fast rebinding rate, remarkable selectivity and distinguish reusability. In addition, through magnetic solid-phase extraction separation technology and high-performance liquid chromatography ultraviolet quantitative detection technology, MMIPs are used for selective enrichment and detection of BPA in complex media such as environmental water and milk. To achieve the purpose of treating waste by waste, in this study, a nitrogen-doped Fe/Mn bimetallic biochar material (FeMn@N-BC) was prepared from chicken manure for persulfate activation to degrade Bisphenol A (BPA). The FeMn@N-BC was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffract meter (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and found that N doping can form larger specific surface area. Catalytic degradation experiments showed that Fe/Mn bimetal doping not only accelerated the electron cycling rate on the catalyst surface, but also makes the biochar magnetic and easy to separate, thus reducing environmental pollution. Comparative experiments was concluded that the highest degradation efficiency of BPA was achieved when the mass ratios of urea and chicken manure, Fe/Mn were 3:1 and 2:1, respectively, and the pyrolysis temperature was 800 °C, which can almost degrade all the BPA in 60 min. Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure primarily occurs through dietary intake. This study aimed to estimate the extent of dietary BPA exposure among Koreans. A thorough literature search was conducted to establish a BPA content database encompassing common foods consumed in Korea, including various food raw materials and processed food products. Dietary exposure levels were estimated by integrating the constructed BPA database with comprehensive nationwide 24 h-dietary recall datasets. The finding revealed that dietary BPA exposure was low for most Koreans, with a mean of 14.5 ng/kg bw/day, but was higher for preschool-age children (over 23 ng). Canned foods accounted for 9-36% of the total dietary exposure of the highest dietary exposure groups; while across all age groups, a considerable amount was derived from canned tuna, contribution of canned fruits and canned coffee (milk-containing) was high for preschool-age children and adults, respectively. Notably, for adults, a substantial proportion also stemmed from beer packaged in cans. While diet contributed over 80% of aggregate exposure for most age groups, preschool-age children experienced 60% exposure through diet due to additional exposure from indoor dust. Even at the high exposure scenario, aggregate BPA exposure levels remained lower than the current tolerable daily intake (TDI) set by the Korean agency (20 μg/kg bw/day). Nevertheless, most Koreans were exposed to BPA levels surpassing the strictest TDI (0.2 ng/kg bw/day) set by the European Food Safety Authority.

Background: There is limited epidemiological evidence on the association of prenatal exposure to phthalates and synthetic phenols with altered pubertal timing., Objective: To examine the association of prenatal exposure to phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), parabens, benzophenone 3 (BP-3), and triclosan (TCS) with pubertal development in girls and boys from three European cohorts., Methods: Urinary metabolites of six different phthalate diesters (DEP, DiBP, DnBP, BBzP, DEHP, and DiNP), BPA, methyl- (MePB), ethyl- (EtPB), propyl- (PrPB), and butyl-paraben (BuPB), BP-3, and TCS were quantified in one or two (1st and 3rd trimester) urine samples collected during pregnancy (1999-2008) from mothers in three birth cohorts: INMA (Spain), EDEN (France), and MoBa (Norway). Pubertal development of their children was assessed at a single visit at age 7-12 years (579 girls, 644 boys) using the parent-reported Pubertal Development Scale (PDS). Mixed-effect Poisson and g-computation and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) were employed to examine associations of individual and combined prenatal chemical exposure, respectively, with the probability of overall pubertal onset, adrenarche, and gonadarche (stage 2+) in girls and boys. Effect modification by child body mass index (BMI) was also assessed., Results: Maternal concentrations of the molar sum of DEHP and of DiNP metabolites were associated with a slightly higher probability of having started puberty in boys (relative risk, RR [95% CI] = 1.13 [0.98-1.30] and 1.20 [1.06-1.34], respectively, for a two-fold increase in concentrations), with a stronger association for DiNP in boys with overweight or obesity. In contrast, BPA, BuPB, EtPB, and PrPB were associated with a lower probability of pubertal onset, adrenarche, and/or gonadarche in all boys (e.g. overall puberty, BPA: RR [95% CI] = 0.93 [0.85-1.01] and BuPB: 0.95 [0.90-1.00], respectively), and the association with BPA was stronger in boys with underweight/normal weight. In girls, MEHP and BPA were associated with delayed gonadarche in those with underweight/normal weight (RR [95% CI] = 0.86 [0.77-0.95] and 0.90 [0.84-0.97], respectively). Most of these associations were trimester specific. However, the chemical mixture was not associated with any pubertal outcome in boys or girls., Conclusions: Prenatal exposure to certain phthalates and synthetic phenols such as BPA may impact the pubertal development of boys, and weight status may modify this effect. Endocrine disruptive compounds are natural or anthropogenic environmental micropollutants that alter the function of the endocrine system ultimately damaging the metabolism. Bisphenol A (BPA) is the most common of these pollutants and it is often used in epoxy coatings and polycarbonates as a plasticizer. Therefore, monitoring BPA levels in different environments is very important and challenging. In recent years, an increasing number of BPA detection methods have been proposed. This article presents a critical review of aptamer-based electrochemical, fluorescence-based, colorimetric, and several other BPA detection platforms published in the last decade. Furthermore, a statistical evaluation has been made using principle component analysis showing analytical performance parameters do not create very different clusters. Comparisons to other BPA detection methods are also presented so that the reader has an overall literature overview.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used in plastic and paper products, and its exposure can occur through skin contact or oral ingestion. The hazardous effects of BPA absorbed through the skin may be more severe; however, few studies have investigated the skin toxicity of BPA. This study investigated the effects of BPA on human epidermal keratinocyte cell lines, which is relevant for skin exposure. BPA treatment reduced cell viability in a time- and concentration-dependent manner and elevated oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an oxidative stress inhibitor, reduced BPA-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. However, only 10% of the decreased cell viability was restored at the highest NAC concentration. Treatment with tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), which is an ER stress inhibitor, effectively countered the increase in ER stress-related proteins induced by BPA. Moreover, TUDCA treatment led to a reduction in oxidative stress, as demonstrated by the decrease in ROS levels, maintenance of mitochondrial membrane potential, and modulation of stress signaling proteins. Consequently, TUDCA significantly improved BPA-induced cytotoxicity in a concentration-dependent manner. Notably, combined treatment using TUDCA and NAC further reduced the BPA-induced ROS levels; however, no significant difference in cell viability was observed compared with that for TUDCA treatment alone. These findings indicated that the oxidative stress observed following BPA exposure was exacerbated by ER stress. In this review article, the research works covering the analytical determination of bisphenol A (BPA) and its structural analogues published from 2018 to present (February 2024) were examined. The review offers an overview of the concentration levels of these xenoestrogens in food and beverages, and discusses concerns that these may possibly pose to the human health and scrutinises, from an analytical perspective, the main biomonitoring approaches that are applied. This comes as a natural evolution of a previous review that covered the same topic but in earlier years (up to 2017). As compared to the past, while the volume of published literature on this topic has not necessarily decreased, the research studies are now much more homogeneous in terms of their geographical origin, i.e., Southern Europe (mainly Italy and Spain). For this reason, an estimated daily intake of the European population could not be calculated at this time. In terms of the analytical approaches that were applied, 67% of the research groups exploited liquid chromatography (LC), with a detection that was prevalently (71%) afforded by mass spectrometry, with over one-fourth of the research teams using fluorescence (26%) and a minority (3%) detecting the analytes with diode array detection. One-third of the groups used gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry achieving comparatively superior efficiency as compared to LC. Derivatisation was performed in 59% of the GC studies to afford more symmetrical signals and enhanced sensitivity. Although the contamination levels are well below the threshold set by governments, routinely biomonitoring is encouraged because of the possible accumulation of these contaminants in the human body and of their interplay with other xenoestrogens., (© 2024. The widespread and inevitable use of plastic has led to prospective ecological problems through Bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic chemical in plastic manufacturing. The present study addresses a unique methodology for eliminating BPA using the assistance of Pseudomonas putida. In the present work, biomass was torrefied to generate biochar with highly porous networks that could accommodate the bacterial species for effective colonization and multiplication. The designed biochar-bacterial globules demonstrated the ability to effectively remove BPA (96.88%) at a concentration of up to 2 g/L. The biochar-bacterial globules could effectively adsorb BPA at a low concentration of 20 mg/L. The alteration in pH did not impact the globule's performance, providing additional support for the practical utilization of these globules in polluted water bodies. In addition, the biochar-bacterial globules exhibited superior effectiveness in degradation compared to the standard levels, particularly in saline conditions. Resource utilization of waste masks has become an urgent scientific issue. In this work, with sustainably, waste masks and biomass were co-pyrolysis with oxygen limitation to prepare mask-based biochar (MB). Then, urea was introduced to prepare novel nitrogen modified mask-based biochar (NMB) via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method. The adsorption characteristics of NMB on the emerging environmental pollutant, bisphenol A (BPA), were evaluated via batch adsorption tests. Moreover, the physicochemical properties of the materials were characterized with various advanced techniques. Also, the roles of waste masks and nitrogen modification were explored. The adsorption mechanisms of NMB on BPA were revealed as well as the performance differences between different adsorbents. The results showed that waste masks participated in thermochemical reactions, shaped the microsphere structure of biochar, and increased the types of surface functional groups. The nitrogen modification enriched the surface elemental composition and activated the specific surface area via the mesopore. These would enhance the adsorption performance. The maximum adsorption of BPA by NMB was 62.63 mg·g -1 , which was approximately 2.35-5.58 times higher than that of the control materials. Temkin model and pseudo-second-order model optimally simulate the isothermal and kinetic adsorption, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms are jointly by physical and chemical adsorption, which mainly includes π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, intraparticle diffusion, surface adsorption, and ion exchange. After discussion and evaluation, NMB has lower preparation process cost (7.21 USD·kg -1 ) and safety, with potential for environmental applications. Previous studies show that bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogs induce oxidative stress and promote inflammatory response. However, the key molecules in regulating this process remain unclear. Here, we report significant inductive effects of BPA and bisphenol AF (BPAF) on a newly found long non-coding RNA linc-93.2 accompanied by oxidative stress and activation of pro-inflammatory pathways in treated fish and fish primary macrophages. Silencing linc-93.2 in fish primary macrophages in vitro or fish in vivo significantly promotes the expression of anti-oxidative stress-related genes and anti-inflammatory cytokines. This inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine expression, showing cell status disruption towards to M2 polarization. Followed by exposure to BPA or BPAF, silencing linc-93.2 in vitro or in vivo significantly attenuates the increased production of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde level aroused by bisphenol treatment, possibly owing to the enhancement of total antioxidant capacity observed in cells and tissue after linc-93.2 knockdown. The growing number of companion dogs has contributed to a rapidly growing market for pet products, including dog toys. However, little is known about the hazardous substances released from dog toys. This study aims to examine the potential presence of obesogens, a subset of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that are widely utilized as raw materials in the manufacture of dog toy components, and their effects on dog health. To achieve this, we adapted and employed a migration method typically used for children's products to simulate obesogen exposure in dogs through sucking or chewing toys. We demonstrated that out of various obesogens, bisphenol A (BPA) was released from dog toys into synthetic saliva, whereas phthalates and azo dyes were not detected in any of the leachates. Additionally, we found that BPA induced adipogenic differentiation in canine adipose-derived stem cells (cADSCs). Our RNA sequencing experiments revealed that BPA alters the adipogenesis-related gene signature in cADSCs by elevating the expression levels of ADIPOQ, PLIN1, PCK1, CIDEC, and FABP4. The associated transcriptional changes are involved in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway, which may contribute to the promotion of adipogenesis by BPA. Our findings suggest that companion dogs are at risk of BPA exposure, which may contribute to obesity in dogs. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a multifaceted condition influenced by genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. Among environmental factors, Bisphenol A (BPA)-a recognized endocrine disruptor-has been implicated in the development of PCOS. The study aimed to compare BPA levels in women diagnosed with PCOS with those in healthy controls, using the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. The study involved 80 women diagnosed with PCOS and 50 healthy control participants. Demographic and biochemical parameters were recorded, including age, Body Mass Index (BMI), and levels of testosterone, estradiol, Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Prolactin (PRL), Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S), Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), and Insulin Resistance as measured by the Homeostatic Model Assessment (HOMA-IR). Furthermore, BPA levels were measured using the HPLC technique. Women with PCOS exhibited significantly higher mean age and BMI compared to healthy controls (p = 0.01, p < 0.0001, respectively). Additionally, higher levels of testosterone (p = 0.04), LH (p = 0.03) and BPA (p < 0.0001) were observed in women with PCOS. However, estradiol, FSH, PRL, LH/FSH ratio, DHEA-S, and TSH levels were not significantly different between the two groups. HOMA-IR levels were not recorded for the control group. A notable positive relationship emerged between Bisphenol A and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels (r = 0.23, p = 0.03), also significant negative correlation appeared between Bisphenol A and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. This study found that women with PCOS have elevated BPA levels compared with healthy controls, showing a need for further research on the relationship between BPA exposure and the development of PCOS., (© 2024. Plastic pollution is becoming increasingly severe and is attracting global attention. One of its consequences is the recent discovery of micropollutant discharge into water, with Bisphenol A (BA-MP) being a typical example. This study utilizes an advanced oxidation process based on Pt-doped ZnO photocatalyst to remove BA-MP. Health concerns related to the release of BA-MP from plastic waste are discussed. Besides, the results of the photodegradation experiment show that the Pt-ZnO photocatalyst can remove 94.1% of BA-MP within 60 min when exposed to solar light. Moreover, after five reuse cycles, Pt-ZnO retains a high BA-MP removal efficiency of 71.2%, and its structure remains largely unchanged compared to the original material. The removal efficiency of BA-MP leaching from plastic waste was measured at 98.8%, confirming the suitability of Pt-ZnO for the treatment of micropollutants. Mammalian embryos are very vulnerable to environmental toxicants (ETs) exposure. Bisphenol A (BPA), one of the most diffused ETs, exerts endocrine-disrupting effects through estro-gen-mimicking and hormone-like properties, with detrimental health effects, including on reproduction. However, its impact during the peri-implantation stages is still unclear. This study, using gastruloids as a 3D stem cell-based in vitro model of embryonic development, showed that BPA exposure arrests their axial elongation when present during the Wnt/β-catenin pathway activation period by β-catenin protein reduction. Gastruloid reshaping might have been impeded by the downregulation of Snail, Slug and Twist, known to suppress E-cadherin expression and to activate the N-cadherin gene, and by the low expression of the N-cadherin protein. Also, the lack of gastruloids elongation might be related to altered exit of BPA-exposed cells from the pluripotency condition and their following differentiation. In conclusion, here we show that the inhibition of gastruloids' axial elongation by BPA might be the result of the concomitant Wnt/β-catenin perturbation, reduced N-cadherin expression and Oct4, T/Bra and Cdx2 altered patter expression, which all together concur in the impaired development of mouse gastruloids.

Bisphenols are endocrine-disrupting chemicals used in plastics and resins for food packaging. This study aimed to evaluate the exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol F (BPF) associated with the consumption of fresh, canned, and ready-to-eat meals and determine the effects of bisphenols on blood pressure and heart rate. Forty-eight healthy young adults were recruited for this study, and they were divided into the following three groups: fresh, canned, and ready-to-eat meal groups. Urine samples were collected 2, 4, and 6 h after meal consumption, and blood pressure and heart rate were measured. The consumption of ready-to-eat meals significantly increased urine BPA concentrations compared with canned and fresh meal consumption. No significant difference in BPS and BPF concentrations was observed between the groups. The consumption of ready-to-eat meals was associated with a significant increase in systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure and a marked decrease in diastolic blood pressure and heart rate. No significant differences were noted in blood pressure and heart rate with canned and fresh meal consumption. It can be concluded that total BPA concentration in consumed ready-to-eat meals is high. High BPA intake causes increase in urinary BPA concentrations, which may, in turn, lead to changes in some cardiovascular parameters.

The facile sonochemical synthesis is reported of zinc cobalt oxide (ZnCo 2 O 4 ) composited with carbon nanofiber (CNF). Structural, chemical, and morphological were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoluminescent spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmittance electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. ZnCo 2 O 4 /CNF-modified GCE was applied to the detection of bisphenol A (BPA). The modified GCE shows enhanced sensing performance towards BPA, which includes a linear range (0.2 to 120 μM L -1 ) alongside a low limit of detection (38.2 nM L -1 ), low interference, and good stability. Detection of lower concentrations of BPA enables real sample analysis in the food industries (milk, orange juice, yogurt, tap water, and baby feeding bottles). Surprisingly, the BPA was detected in milk 510 nM L -1 , orange juice 340 nM L -1 , yogurt 1050 nM L -1 , and tap water 140 nM L -1 . Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known endocrine disrupter used in several consumer products. Restricted use of BPA has led to increased use of bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS). While previous studies found no associations between prenatal BPA and BPF exposure and bone mineral density (BMD), two recent cohort studies found that prenatal BPS exposure was negatively associated with bone mineral density in the offspring., Aim: To determine possible associations between maternal and child urinary bisphenol concentrations, BMD and bone mineral content (BMC) in 7-year-old healthy children., Methods: Pregnant women were recruited in 2010-2012 to participate in the Odense Child Cohort (OCC), Denmark. Maternal urine samples were collected in gestational week 28 and urinary BPA concentration was measured by isotope diluted LC-MS/MS. The children delivered a urine sample at age 7 years in which BPA, BPF and BPS were measured by an extended LS-MS/MS method based on the original method. At age 7 years DXA scans were performed and BMC and Z-score for BMD calculated. Associations between osmolality adjusted urinary maternal BPA and child BPA, BPF and BPS concentrations and BMC and BMD Z-score were examined by multiple linear regression analysis adjusted for potential confounders. Additionally, a combined effect of the bisphenols were evaluated by including the sum of child urinary BPA, BPF and BPS concentrations in the statistical analyses., Results: A total of 546 mothers and 453 children aged 7 years participated. BPA was detected in 84% and 96% of the maternal and child urine samples, respectively. We found no significant association between maternal urinary BPA concentration during pregnancy and BMC and BMD Z-score in 7-year-old children. In addition, no association between current bisphenol exposure in tertiles and bone density was found, interestingly, current BPA and summed bisphenol exposure in the highest 10% was associated with lower BMD Z-score at age 7-years, statistically significant for boys., Conclusion: In these low exposed children we found no association between prenatal or current bisphenol exposure in tertiles and BMD in healthy children, however, the highest 10% exposed children had lower BMD, significant for boys, suggesting a negative impact with high bisphenol exposure. Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder characterized by anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology. Its etiology is uncertain and one of the hypotheses is that environmental factors, such as the bisphenol A (BPA) endocrine disruptor, may be involved., Objective: To investigate the association between exposure to BPA and PCOS., Search Strategy: Research was conducted focusing on studies published in English, Portuguese, and Spanish from January 2001 to March 2023 and available in Embase, Medline/PubMed, Rima, Lilacs, Scielo, Google academic, and SCI databases., Selection Criteria: Studies in humans that evaluated the association between exposure to BPA and a diagnosis of PCOS., Data Collection and Analysis: Following PRISMA guidelines, study characteristics and relevant data were extracted., Main Results: Selection of 15 case-control and 7 cross-sectional studies with a total of 1682 PCOS patients. The studies were carried out in China, Poland, Turkey, Japan, Greece, Italy, the USA, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, India, Czechia, and Slovakia. A positive relationship between exposure to BPA and PCOS was described in19 studies (1391 [82.70%] of the PCOS patients). The fluids used in the studies were serum, urine, plasma, and follicular fluid. BPA was measured by ELISA and by chromatography (HPLC, HPLC-MS/MS, GC-MS, and GC-MS/MS). Diagnosis of PCOS used Rotterdam criteria in 15, NIH 1999 in 3, AE&PCOS Society in 2, similar to the Rotterdam criteria in 1, and criteria not informed in 1. Androgens were measured in 16 studies; in 12, hyperandrogenism was positively associated with BPA. BPA level was related to body mass index (BMI) in studies. In 15 studies independently of BMI, women with PCOS had higher BPA levels. Carbohydrate metabolism disorders were evaluated in 12 studies and in 6 a positive correlation was found with BPA levels. Lipid profile was evaluated in seven studies and in only one the correlation between lipid profile and BPA levels was present., Conclusions: Exposure to BPA is positively associated with PCOS, mainly with the hyperandrogenism., (© 2024 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics.)

Earlier research has demonstrated that developmental exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) has persistent impacts on both adult brain growth and actions. It has been suggested that BPA might obstruct the methylation coding of the genes in the brain. In this study, the methylation changes in the hippocampus tissue of male rat pups were examined following prenatal BPA exposure. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with either vehicle (tocopherol-stripped corn oil) or BPA (4, 40, or 400 μg/kg·body weight/day) throughout the entire duration of gestation and lactation. At 3 weeks of age, the male rat offspring were euthanized, and the hippocampus were dissected out for analysis. The expression levels of DNA methyltransferases (DNMT1, DNMT3A, and DNMT3B) and DNA demethylases (TET1, Gadd45a, Gadd45b, and Apobec1) were analyzed in the hippocampus by means of quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting, respectively. The results showed that prenatal exposure to BPA upregulated the expression of enzymes associated with DNA methylation and demethylation processes in the hippocampus of male rat offspring. These findings suggest that prenatal exposure to a low dose of BPA could potentially disrupt the balance of methylation and demethylation in the hippocampus, thereby perturbing epigenetic modifications. Cumulative human exposure to the environmental toxin, bisphenol A (BPA), has raised important health concerns in recent decades. However, the direct genomic regulation of BPA in skeletal muscles and its clinical significance are poorly understood. Therefore, we conducted a genome-wide transcriptome analysis after daily oral administration of BPA at the lowest observed adverse-effect level (LOAEL, 50 mg/kg) in male mice for six weeks to explore the gene-expression regulations in skeletal muscle induced by BPA. The primary Gene Ontology terms linked to BPA-dependent, differentially expressed genes at LOAEL comprised adaptive-immune response, positive regulation of T cell activation, and immune system process. The gene-set enrichment analysis disclosed increased complement-associated genes [complement components 3 (C3) and 4B, complement factor D, complement receptor 2, and immunoglobulin lambda constant 2] in the group administered with BPA, with a false-discovery rate of <0.05. Subsequent validation analysis conducted in BPA-fed animal skeletal muscle tissue and in vitro experiments confirmed that BPA induced immune activation, as evidenced by increased levels of C3 and C4α proteins in mice, C2C12 myoblasts, and mouse skeletal muscle cells. In addition, BPA markedly upregulated the transcription of tumor necrosis factor-α (Tnfα) in C2C12 myoblasts and mouse skeletal muscle cells, which was substantially inhibited by 5z-7-oxozeanol and parthenolide, providing further evidence of BPA-induced inflammation in muscle cells. Background: Prenatal bisphenol exposure has been reported to be associated with lower birth weight and obesity-related indicators in early childhood. These findings warrant an investigation of the relationship between prenatal bisphenol exposure and the dynamic growth of offspring. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship of maternal bisphenol concentration in urine with the body mass index (BMI) growth trajectory of children aged up to two years and to identify the critical exposure periods., Methods: A total of 826 mother-offspring pairs were recruited from Wuhan Children's Hospital between November 2013 and March 2015. Maternal urine samples collected during the first, second, and third trimesters were analyzed for bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S, and bisphenol F (BPF) concentrations. Measurements of length and weight were taken at 0, 1, 3, 6, 8, 12, 18, and 24 months. Children's BMI was standardized using the World Health Organization reference, and group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify BMI growth trajectories. The associations between prenatal bisphenol exposure and BMI growth trajectory patterns were assessed using multinomial logistic regression models., Results: The BMI growth trajectories of the 826 children were categorized into four patterns: low-stable (n = 134, 16.2%), low-increasing (n = 142, 17.2%), moderate-stable (n = 350, 42.4%), and moderate-increasing (n = 200, 24.2%). After adjusting for potential confounders, we observed that prenatal exposure to BPA during the second trimester [odds ratio (OR) = 2.20, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.09-4.43] and BPF during the third trimester (OR = 3.28, 95% CI = 1.55-6.95) at the highest quartile concentration were associated with an increased likelihood of the low-increasing BMI trajectory. Furthermore, in the subgroup analysis by infant sex, the positive association between the highest quartile of prenatal average urinary BPF concentration during the whole pregnancy and the low-increasing BMI trajectory was found only in girls (OR = 2.82, 95% CI = 1.04-7.68)., Conclusion: Our study findings suggest that prenatal exposure to BPA and BPF (a commonly used substitute for BPA) is associated with BMI growth trajectories in offspring during the first two years, increasing the likelihood of the low-increasing pattern.
