Abstract

The author presents case studies in dyslipidaemia and the use of lipid-lowering drugs among patients at high risk of a cardiovascular event. Therapies in line with the current guidance from Great Britain's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence are suggested. The author stresses that decisions regarding lipid management and cardiovascular disease risk reduction must be made with the individual patient and after careful appraisal of the risks, benefits, and available alternatives.

The article reports on the need for National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to revise its controversial lipid modification guidance after being accused of having a vague initial draft in Great Britain. Several cardiovascular bodies have criticized the institute for not setting a primary prevention target. In addition, it is also argued that the draft has included unstructured secondary prevention targets.
