Naphthalenediimide derivative-absorbed papers, which were prepared by dropping chloroform solution, showed fluorescence under photoirradiation after exposure to vapors of small aromatic guests. The fluorescence intensity and maximum wavelength depended on the type of guest aromatic molecules, similar to the crystal. Information coding, recording, encryption, and decryption are of great importance in the field of anti‐counterfeiting, especially in the current AI information era. Herein, a paper‐like hydrogel composed of solely H‐bonded poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(n‐vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL), namely VAPN, is developed for multiple ways of encryption and decryption based on chemical‐induced phase separation. It not only exhibits excellent ability of ink absorption and retention by the noncovalent H‐bonds and n−π* interactions and good mechanical strength but also maintains a negligible volume change during the phase separation that is crucial for the information fidelity. Given that the noncovalent interactions are the driving force to trigger the phase separation in the hydrogel, available chemical inks are numerous ranging from small molecules to polymers. Furthermore, together with thermally induced phase separation, the different dynamic processes of the association and dissociation between ink molecules and the hydrogel endow the latter with reversible information recording and self‐erasing, temporary or permanent, and customized encryption and decryption. Writing with ink on a paper and the rapid diagnostics of diseases using paper cartridge, despite their remarkable diversities from application perspective, both involve the motion of a liquid from a source on a porous hydrophilic substrate. Here we bring out a generalization in the pertinent dynamics by appealing to the concerned ensemble-averaged transport with reference to the underlying molecular picture. Our results reveal that notwithstanding the associated complexities and diversities, the resultant liquid transport characteristics on a paper matrix, in a wide variety of applications, resemble universal diffusive dynamics. Carnosine (β-alanyl-L-histidine) is a naturally occurring endogenous dipeptide and an over-the-counter food supplement with a well-demonstrated multimodal mechanism of action that includes the detoxification of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, the down-regulation of the production of pro-inflammatory mediators, the inhibition of aberrant protein formation, and the modulation of cells in the peripheral (macrophages) and brain (microglia) immune systems. Since its discovery more than 100 years ago, a plethora of in vivo preclinical studies have been carried out; however, there is still substantial heterogeneity regarding the route of administration, the dosage, the duration of the treatment, and the animal model selected, underlining the urgent need for "coordinated/aligned" preclinical studies laying the foundations for well-defined future clinical trials. The main aim of the present position paper is to critically and concisely consider these key points and open a discussion on the possible "alignment" for future studies, with the goal of validating the full therapeutic potential of this intriguing molecule. Bioactive papers are advanced cellulose-based functional materials that incorporate biomolecules with specific recognition ability for analytes. Although there is a wide range of potential applications for these papers, only a few have reached the commercial stage. There are fundamental questions that have to be addressed before they can be developed in large scale. One of the central questions in bioactive paper development is the impact of the properties of the cellulosic support on both immobilization and functionality of biomolecules. This paper presents a literature review on inkjet printing of biomolecules for bioactive paper applications and reports recent progress made in understanding factors that affect the activity of enzymes physically immobilized on cellulosic supports. Bioactive paper, or paper that exhibits biorecognition properties, is a promising tool for on-site environmental monitoring. A critical parameter for production of paper-based sensors is the immobilization of biomolecules onto paper with retention of long-term activity. High loading, control over biomolecule orientation and accessibility, and protection of biomolecules from external denaturation need to be provided by the immobilization technique. We present here a summary of the current strategies for enzyme, antibody, bacteriophage, and aptamer immobilization on cellulose and provide examples of the application of bioactive paper in environmental monitoring. Moisture is an important factor affecting the insulation properties of transformers. Due to the limitations of macroscopic experimental methods, the diffusion of water at oil-paper interface cannot be accurately measured. Therefore, molecular dynamics method was used in this work to establish oil-paper layer model of 105 atoms. Through jointly analysing the aggregation degree, diffusion coefficient, free volume as well as radial distribution function of water molecules, the diffusion mechanism of water molecules at oil-paper interface was studied. The results show that when the initial water content in paper was high, water molecules would accumulate at oil-paper interface to form the local high-water region during heating. The polarisation of the electric field strengthened the hydrogen bonding interaction between water molecules and increased the probability of occurrence of the high-water region. Meanwhile, electric field reduced the free volume and diffusion coefficient of water molecules and rendered its diffusion coefficient anisotropic. What’s more, when the electric field was combined with the temperature field, the electric field played a leading role in the diffusion of water molecules while the temperature field was less affected. Diffusion coefficients of water molecules at different temperatures from molecular dynamics simulations were well consistent with experimental results, which verified the rationality of the model. MXene‐based thermal camouflage materials have gained increasing attention due to their low emissivity, however, the poor anti‐oxidation restricts their potential applications under complex environments. Various modification methods and strategies, e.g., the addition of antioxidant molecules and fillers have been developed to overcome this, but the realization of long‐term, reliable thermal camouflage using MXene network (coating) with excellent comprehensive performance remains a great challenge. Here, a MXene‐based hybrid network comodified with hyaluronic acid (HA) and hyperbranched polysiloxane (HSi) molecules is designed and fabricated. Notably, the presence of appreciated HA molecules restricts the oxidation of MXene sheets without altering infrared stealth performance, superior to other water‐soluble polymers; while the HSi molecules can act as efficient cross‐linking agents to generate strong interactions between MXene sheets and HA molecules. The optimized MXene/HA/HSi composites exhibit excellent mechanical flexibility (folded into crane structure), good water/solvent resistance, and long‐term stable thermal camouflage capability (with low infrared emissivity of ≈0.29). The long‐term thermal camouflage reliability (≈8 months) under various outdoor weathers and the scalable coating capability of the MXene‐coated textile enable them to disguise the IR signal of various targets in complex environments, indicating the great promise of achieved material for thermal camouflage, IR stealth, and counter surveillance. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the suitability of a nested PCR-DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) method for the detection of Desulfovibrionales-related sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) from paper mill samples. The samples were also analyzed with culturing. SRB cause/enhance industrial problems, namely creation of foul-smelling gases (hydrogen sulfide) and biological corrosion, and so far there has not been a simple method to study these bacteria in paper mill laboratories. In our study, culturing was able to detect Desulfovibrionales-related bacteria from two different white waters, two different brokes, pulp, clay, and slime. Out of the isolated Desulfovibrionales, 23 enrichment cultures were further characterized with Desulfovibrionales-selective PCR-DGGE. An identical Desulfovibrio species sequence was found from paper machine I (broke I, slime, and pulp) and from paper machine II (broke II and white water II), suggesting an in-house contamination with the same strain. Desulfovibrionales-selective PCR-DGGE was also performed from DNA templates extracted directly from the paper mill samples. The DGGE profiles derived from the samples without prior enrichment were more diverse and the sequenced amplicons proved to belong to the Desulfovibrionales order. Moreover, molecular techniques were able to detect Desulfovibrionales-related bacteria from calcium carbonate samples whereas culture did not. Altogether, the nested PCR-DGGE method used in this study was suitable for the detection of Desulfovibrionales-related SRB directly from different paper mill samples and it could be used for the rapid identification of SRB-contaminated industrial sites and, when combined with sequencing, for tracing of the contamination routes. The article reports on the use of the chelating agent ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid in removing unwanted stains and spots from paper objects. In order to be a chelating agent, a molecule must have two appropriate functional groups, each having a donor atom, having the capacity to combine a metal atom by donating a pair of electrons. It was discovered that the pH of pure cellulose paper remained neutral. No significant change after accelerated ageing at 105°C for 72 hour was found. Moreover, no change was discovered after iron staining.

To circumvent the bottlenecks of non-flexibility, low sensitivity, and narrow workable detection range of conventional biosensors for biological molecule detection (e.g., dopamine (DA) secreted by living cells), a new hybrid flexible electrochemical biosensor has been created by decorating closely packed dendritic Pt nanoparticles (NPs) on freestanding graphene paper. This innovative structural integration of ultrathin graphene paper and uniform 2D arrays of dendritic NPs by tailored wet chemical synthesis has been achieved by a modular strategy through a facile and delicately controlled oil-water interfacial assembly method, whereby the uniform distribution of catalytic dendritic NPs on the graphene paper is maximized. In this way, the performance is improved by several orders of magnitude. The developed hybrid electrode shows a high sensitivity of 2 μA cm−2 μ m−1, up to about 33 times higher than those of conventional sensors, a low detection limit of 5 n m, and a wide linear range of 87 n m to 100 μ m. These combined features enable the ultrasensitive detection of DA released from pheochromocytoma (PC 12) cells. The unique features of this flexible sensor can be attributed to the well-tailored uniform 2D array of dendritic Pt NPs and the modular electrode assembly at the oil-water interface. Its excellent performance holds much promise for the future development of optimized flexible electrochemical sensors for a diverse range of electroactive molecules to better serve society. Purification of wastewater from paper factory was attempted by superconducting high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) both in laboratory scale and pilot-plant scale experiments. Magnetite and some kinds of iron hydroxide particles were used as scavenging materials for suspended substances (SS) and organic dye molecules included in wastewater. The chemical oxygen demand (COD value) was used as a measure of purification of the wastewater. Optimum dosage of the scavenger was examined. Model wastewater was also prepared and tested in order to elucidate the mechanism of adsorption of the organic materials onto the scavenging particles. The obtained results showed that the wastewater was successfully purified by HGMS both in a laboratory scale and a pilot-plant scale. The apparatus modifications of magnetic filters and flow path were also made to accomplish the purification system for the practical use. Genetically engineered bacteria and reactive DNA networks detect edges of objects, as done in our retinas and as also found within computer vision. We now demonstrate that simple molecular logic systems (a combination of a pH sensor, a photo acid generator, and a pH buffer spread on paper) without any organization can achieve this relatively complex computational goal with good fidelity. This causes a jump in the complexity achievable by molecular logic-based computation and extends its applicability. The molecular species involved in light dose-driven "off--on--off" fluorescence is diverted in the "on" state by proton diffusion from irradiated to unirradiated regions where it escapes a strong quencher, thus visualizing the edge of a mask. In vitro 3D culture is an important model for tissues in vivo. Cells in different locations of 3D tissues are physiologically different, because they are exposed to different concentrations of oxygen, nutrients, and signaling molecules, and to other environmental factors (temperature, mechanical stress, etc). The majority of high-throughput assays based on 3D cultures, however, can only detect the average behavior of cells in the whole 3D construct. Isolation of cells from specific regions of 3D cultures is possible, but relies on low-throughput techniques such as tissue sectioning and micromanipulation. Based on a procedure reported previously ("cells-in-gels-in-paper" or CiGiP), this paper describes a simple method for culture of arrays of thin planar sections of tissues, either alone or stacked to create more complex 3D tissue structures. This procedure starts with sheets of paper patterned with hydrophobic regions that form 96 hydrophilic zones. Serial spotting of cells suspended in extracellular matrix (ECM) gel onto the patterned paper creates an array of 200 micron-thick slabs of ECM gel (supported mechanically by cellulose fibers) containing cells. Stacking the sheets with zones aligned on top of one another assembles 96 3D multilayer constructs. De-stacking the layers of the 3D culture, by peeling apart the sheets of paper, "sections" all 96 cultures at once. It is, thus, simple to isolate 200-micron-thick cell-containing slabs from each 3D culture in the 96-zone array. Because the 3D cultures are assembled from multiple layers, the number of cells plated initially in each layer determines the spatial distribution of cells in the stacked 3D cultures. Abstract: In this opinion paper, we suggest that the scheme of the complement system should be redrawn in order to better illustrate its potencies. This can be achieved by putting the amplification loop of the alternative complement pathway at the center of the complement system. This arrangement emphasizes that C3b molecules, generated by any pathway, can stimulate complement amplification. Furthermore, it allows one to differentiate between this type of stimulation of amplification and that driven by those immune complexes that capture dimeric C3b molecules, which are more potent C3 convertase precursors than C3b. Schemes similar to the one drawn may help to better illustrate the interplay of the pathways and convey a clearer comprehension of the mechanics of the complement system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Amphiphilic nanostructures provide unique environments for molecules that are incompatible with the solvent to be sequestered within their interior. These internal environments provide opportunities for concentrating an analyte or transducer molecule for detection, and the functional groups within the amphiphiles provide an opportunity for incorporating specificity or selectivity toward analytes. In this review, we discuss ways in which amphiphilic assemblies can be used to detect peptides and proteins with a particular emphasis on facially amphiphilic polymers and dendrimers. We have investigated whether intracellular signal transduction molecules can be used as immunohistological markers of normal and neoplastic human leucocytes in routine tissue sections. We obtained selective labelling of white cells for eight such molecules (the ‘linker’ molecules SLP-76 and BLNK, the Src family kinases Lyn, Fyn, Syk and Hck, and the phospholipases PLC- γ1 and PLC- γ2). Antibodies to SLP-76 and PLC- γ1 selectively labelled T cells, and antibodies to BLNK, Lyn, Fyn, Syk and PLC- γ2 labelled B cells (although Fyn immunostaining was restricted to mantle zone B cells). Antibodies to the Syk and Hck kinases labelled probable thymocyte precursors at the periphery of the thymic cortex. In addition to lymphoid cells, several other leucocyte types were immunostained (e.g. SLP-76, Lyn, Syk and Hck were found in megakaryocytes, myeloid cells and/or macrophages, and PLC- γ2 was detected in arterial endothelium). SLP-76 and PLC- γ1 were found in most T-cell lymphomas studied, and some B-cell lymphomas were also positive for PLC- γ1 (e.g. diffuse large cell and Burkitt's lymphoma). The five B cell-associated markers were found in most B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, although some diffuse large B-cell lymphomas were negative (e.g. for Lyn) and anti-Fyn tended not to stain small B-cell neoplasms. The observation that a range of leucocyte signalling molecules can be detected in routine biopsies offers new possibilities for studying normal and neoplastic human white cells in diagnostic tissue samples. T-cell immune dysfunction in patients with malignant tumours has been attributed to the altered expression of components of the T-cell receptor (TCR)/CD3 complex and their associated intracellular protein tyrosine kinases. In this study, four-colour flow cytometry was applied to study the surface bound molecules TCR α β, CD28, CD152 and CD154 involved in T-cell signalling and the signal transduction molecules CD3 ζ, p56lck, p59fyn, ZAP-70 and phosphatidyl-inositol-3 kinase (PI3-k) as well as the intracellular cytokines interferon- γ (IFN- γ), interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-2 as a functional read-out of non-stimulated and superantigen (staphylococcus enterotoxin B)-stimulated blood T cells of multiple myeloma (MM) patients at different stages of the disease. Multiple abnormalities were demonstrated in the CD4 and CD8 populations, both under non-stimulated and superantigen-stimulated conditions. There was a marked reduction, particular in advanced stage MM, in the proportion of CD4 and CD8 cells expressing CD28, CD152, CD3 ζ, p56lck, ZAP-70 and PI3-k. The level of intracellular T-cell cytokines (IFN- γ, IL-2 and IL-4) was normal or increased in non-stimulated cells but activation-induced cytokine production was impaired. These results illustrated profound and multiple T-cell signalling defects, from the surface and down-stream, consistent with involvement of a master T-cell function, especially in advanced stage MM. These data should be taken into consideration when developing immune-based therapeutic approaches and when applying new emerging technologies that aim to restore T-cell functions.
