Introduction: The objective was to perform placental ultrasound image texture (UPIA) in first (T1), second(T2) and third(T3) trimesters of pregnancy using machine learning( ML)., Methods: In this prospective observational study the 2D placental ultrasound (US) images from 11-14 weeks, 20-24 weeks, and 28-32 weeks were taken. The image data was divided into training, validating, and testing subsets in the ratio of 80%, 10%, and 10%. Three different ML techniques, deep learning, transfer learning, and vision transformer were used for UPIA., Results: Out of 1008 cases included in the study, 59.5% (600/1008) had a normal outcome. The image texture classification was compared between T1&T2, T2 &T3 and T1&T3 pairs. Using Inception v3 model, to classify T1& T2 images, gave the accuracy, Cohen Kappa score of 83.3%, 0.662 respectively. The image classification between T1&T3 achieved best results using EfficientNetB0 model, having the accuracy, Cohen Kappa score, sensitivity and specificity of 87.5%, 0.749, 83.4%, and 88.9% respectively. Comparison of placental image texture among cases with materno-fetal adverse outcome and controls was done using Efficient Net B0. The F1 score, was found to be 0.824 , 0.820, and 0.892 in T1, T2 and T3 respectively. Machine learning plays an important role in computational intelligence and has been widely used in many engineering fields. Surface voids or bugholes frequently appearing on concrete surface after the casting process make the corresponding manual inspection time consuming, costly, labor intensive, and inconsistent. In order to make a better inspection of the concrete surface, automatic classification of concrete bugholes is needed. In this paper, a variable selection strategy is proposed for pursuing feature interpretability, together with an automatic ensemble classification designed for getting a better accuracy of the bughole classification. A texture feature deriving from the Gabor filter and gray-level run lengths is extracted in concrete surface images. Interpretable variables, which are also the components of the feature, are selected according to a presented cumulative voting strategy. An ensemble classifier with its base classifier automatically assigned is provided to detect whether a surface void exists in an image or not. In light of the prevalent issues concerning the mechanical grading of fresh tea leaves, characterized by high damage rates and poor accuracy, as well as the limited grading precision through the integration of machine vision and machine learning (ML) algorithms, this study presents an innovative approach for classifying the quality grade of fresh tea leaves. This approach leverages an integration of image recognition and deep learning (DL) algorithm to accurately classify tea leaves' grades by identifying distinct bud and leaf combinations. The method begins by acquiring separate images of orderly scattered and randomly stacked fresh tea leaves. These images undergo data augmentation techniques, such as rotation, flipping, and contrast adjustment, to form the scattered and stacked tea leaves datasets. Subsequently, the YOLOv8x model was enhanced by Space pyramid pooling improvements (SPPCSPC) and the concentration-based attention module (CBAM). The established YOLOv8x-SPPCSPC-CBAM model is evaluated by comparing it with popular DL models, including Faster R-CNN, YOLOv5x, and YOLOv8x. The experimental findings reveal that the YOLOv8x-SPPCSPC-CBAM model delivers the most impressive results. For the scattered tea leaves, the mean average precision, precision, recall, and number of images processed per second rates of 98.2%, 95.8%, 96.7%, and 2.77, respectively, while for stacked tea leaves, they are 99.1%, 99.1%, 97.7% and 2.35, respectively. Changes in land use and land cover (LULC) have significant implications for biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and deforestation. Modeling LULC changes is crucial to understanding anthropogenic impacts on environmental conservation and ecosystem services. Although previous studies have focused on predicting future changes, there is a growing need to determine past scenarios using new assessment tools. This study proposes a methodology for LULC past scenario generation based on transition analysis. Aiming to hindcast LULC scenario in 1970 based on the transition analysis of the past 35 years (from 1985 to 2020), two machine learning algorithms, multilayer perceptron (MLP) and similarity weighted (SimWeight), were employed to determine the driver variables most related to conversions in LULC and to simulate the past. The study focused on the Aristida spp. grasslands in the Uruguayan savannas, where native grasslands have been extensively converted to agricultural areas. Land use and land cover data from the MapBiomas project were integrated with spatial variables such as altimetry, slope, pedology, and linear distances from rivers, roads, urban areas, agriculture, forest, forestry, and native grasslands. The accuracy of the predicted maps was assessed through stratified random sampling of reference images from the Multispectral Scanner (MSS) sensor. The results demonstrate a reduction of approximately 659 934 ha of native grasslands in the study area between 1985 and 2020, directly proportional to the increase in cultivable areas. The MLP algorithm exhibited moderate performance, with notable errors in classifying agriculture and grassland areas. In contrast, the SimWeight algorithm displayed better accuracy, particularly in distinguishing grassland and agriculture classes. The modeled map using SimWeight accurately represented the transitions between grassland and agriculture with a high level of agreement. By modeling the 1970s scenario using the SimWeight model, it was estimated that the Aristida spp. grasslands experienced a substantial reduction in grassland coverage, ranging from 9982.31 to 10 022.32 km 2 between 1970 and 2020. This represents a range of 60.8%-61.07% of the total grassland area in 1970. These findings provide valuable insights into the driving factors behind land use change in the Aristida spp. grasslands and offer useful information for land management, conservation, and sustainable development in the region. Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) fruit samples belonging to the 'Mejhoul' and 'Boufeggous' cultivars were harvested at the Tamar stage and used in our experiments. Before scanning, date samples were dried using convective drying at 60 °C and infrared drying at 60 °C with a frequency of 50 Hz, and then they were scanned. The scanning trials were performed for two hundred date palm fruit in fresh, convective-dried, and infrared-dried forms of each cultivar using a flatbed scanner. The image-texture parameters of date fruit were extracted from images converted to individual color channels in RGB, Lab, XYZ, and UVS color models. The models to classify fresh and dried samples were developed based on selected image textures using machine learning algorithms belonging to the groups of Bayes, Trees, Lazy, Functions, and Meta. For both the 'Mejhoul' and 'Boufeggous' cultivars, models built using Random Forest from the group of Trees turned out to be accurate and successful. The average classification accuracy for fresh, convective-dried, and infrared-dried 'Mejhoul' reached 99.33%, whereas fresh, convective-dried, and infrared-dried samples of 'Boufeggous' were distinguished with an average accuracy of 94.33%. In the case of both cultivars and each model, the higher correctness of discrimination was between fresh and infrared-dried samples, whereas the highest number of misclassified cases occurred between fresh and convective-dried fruit. Thus, the developed procedure may be considered an innovative approach to the non-destructive assessment of drying impact on the external quality characteristics of date palm fruit. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of machine learning based on image texture parameters to discriminate plum stone cultivars. The plums of cultivars 'Emper', 'Kalipso', and 'Polinka' were sampled. For each cultivar, one hundred images of plum stones were acquired using a digital camera. Processing of the plum stone images included the conversion of the images to individual color channels, image segmentation, region of interest (ROI) determination, and texture parameter extraction. Then, the discriminant analysis, including the texture selection and building discriminative models for the evaluation of the diversity of the plum stone cultivars, was carried out. The obtained results of discrimination of plum stone cultivars were very accurate and confirmed the effectiveness of image processing to evaluate the cultivar diversity. The most satisfactory results, reaching 96.67% for the average accuracy for three cultivars (97% for 'Emper', 'Kalipso', and 96% for 'Polinka'), were obtained for the models built based on combined textures selected from all the color channels using the IBk classifier. The use of innovative techniques in the classification of dried products for food processing and packaging systems simplifies and brings objectivity to the related processes. In addition, it helps consumers to access quality products. This study aimed to discriminate dried carrot samples subjected to 12 different combinations of drying and pretreatment by using innovative techniques based on chromatic attributes. The drying procedure consists of three different microwave powers (100, 200, 300 W), and pretreatments include 5% gum arabic solution, 5% gum sucrose solution, ultrasound application, and a control (no-pretreatment). The R , G , B , L , a , b , H , S, and V color channels were extracted from dried carrot images, and the exploration of classification models from selected color channels was an innovative aspect of the study. In all color channels, high overall accuracies were obtained with the values of 96.33, 96.50, and 97.00% for the logistic model tree, k-nearest neighbor, and random forest, respectively. The confusion matrix showed the lowest mixing among carrots dried at H-US (300 W + ultrasound) vs. H-C (300 W + control), H-S (300 W + sucrose) vs. H-C (300 W + control), and M-S (200 W + sucrose) vs. H-S (300 W + sucrose). The highest L, a, and b color values for the dried carrot slices were obtained as M-S (75.26), H-GA (30.93), and M-GA (44.75), respectively. In addition, hue values varied between 17.26 and 13.27, whereas saturation values varied between 50.93 and 59.90. The finding revealed that assessment of the effect of pretreatment and drying on carrot slices could be performed by machine learning and image analysis in a practical, rapid, and non-destructive manner. • Eight different machine learning algorithms was applied for classification. • 12 carrot classes subjected to various treatments were distinguished. • Innovative models built based on image textures were developed. • LMT, kNN, and RF was more successful for classification of dried carrot slices. • The developed procedure was non-destructive, objective, and effective. Digital histopathological images, high-resolution images of stained tissue samples, are a vital tool for clinicians to diagnose and stage cancers. The visual analysis of patient state based on these images are an important part of oncology workflow. Although pathology workflows have historically been conducted in laboratories under a microscope, the increasing digitization of histopathological images has led to their analysis on computers in the clinic. The last decade has seen the emergence of machine learning, and deep learning in particular, a powerful set of tools for the analysis of histopathological images. Machine learning models trained on large datasets of digitized histopathology slides have resulted in automated models for prediction and stratification of patient risk. In this review, we provide context for the rise of such models in computational histopathology, highlight the clinical tasks they have found success in automating, discuss the various machine learning techniques that have been applied to this domain, and underscore open problems and opportunities., (© 2023 The Authors. Objectives: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of texture analysis (TA)-derived parameters combined with machine learning (ML) of non-contrast-enhanced T1w and T2w fat-saturated (fs) images with MR elastography (MRE) for liver fibrosis quantification., Methods: In this IRB-approved prospective study, liver MRIs of participants with suspected chronic liver disease who underwent liver biopsy between August 2015 and May 2018 were analyzed. Two readers blinded to clinical and histopathological findings performed TA. The participants were categorized into no or low-stage (0-2) and high-stage (3-4) fibrosis groups. Confusion matrices were calculated using a support vector machine combined with principal component analysis. The diagnostic accuracy of ML-based TA of liver fibrosis and MRE was assessed by area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC). Histopathology served as reference standard., Results: A total of 62 consecutive participants (40 men; mean age ± standard deviation, 48 ± 13 years) were included. The accuracy of TA and ML on T1w was 85.7% (95% confidence interval [CI] 63.7-97.0) and 61.9% (95% CI 38.4-81.9) on T2w fs for classification of liver fibrosis into low-stage and high-stage fibrosis. The AUC for TA on T1w was similar to MRE (0.82 [95% CI 0.59-0.95] vs. 0.92 [95% CI 0.71-0.99], p = 0.41), while the AUC for T2w fs was significantly lower compared to MRE (0.57 [95% CI 0.34-0.78] vs. 0.92 [95% CI 0.71-0.99], p = 0.008)., Conclusion: Our results suggest that liver fibrosis can be quantified with TA-derived parameters of T1w when combined with a ML algorithm with similar accuracy compared to MRE., Key Points: • Liver fibrosis can be categorized into low-stage fibrosis (0-2) and high-stage fibrosis (3-4) using texture analysis-derived parameters of T1-weighted images with a machine learning approach. • For the differentiation of low-stage fibrosis and high-stage fibrosis, the diagnostic accuracy of texture analysis on T1-weighted images combined with a machine learning algorithm is similar compared to MR elastography.

Leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) is an important indicator of plant nutritional status and can be a guide for plant disease diagnosis. In this study, we took apple leaves infected with mosaic disease as a research object and extracted two types of information on spectral and textural features from hyperspectral images, with a view to realizing non-destructive detection of LCC. First, the collected hyperspectral images were preprocessed and spectral reflectance was extracted in the region of interest. Subsequently, we used the successive projections algorithm (SPA) to select the optimal wavelengths (OWs) and extracted eight basic textural features using the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). In addition, composite spectral and textural metrics, including vegetation indices (VIs), normalized difference texture indices (NDTIs), difference texture indices (DTIs), and ratio texture indices (RTIs) were calculated. Third, we applied the maximal information coefficient (MIC) algorithm to select significant VIs and basic textures, as well as the tandem method was used to fuse the spectral and textural features. Finally, we employ support vector regression (SVR), backpropagation neural network (BPNN), and K-nearest neighbors regression (KNNR) methods to explore the efficacy of single and combined feature models for estimating LCC. The results showed that the VIs model (R2 = 0.8532, RMSE = 2.1444, RPD = 2.6179) and the NDTIs model (R2 = 0.7927, RMSE = 2.7453, RPD = 2.2032) achieved the best results among the single feature models for spectra and texture, respectively. However, textural features generally exhibit inferior regression performance compared to spectral features and are unsuitable for standalone applications. Combining textural and spectral information can potentially improve the single feature models. Specifically, when combining NDTIs with VIs as input parameters, three machine learning models outperform the best single feature model. Ultimately, SVR achieves the highest performance among the LCC regression models (R2 = 0.8665, RMSE = 1.8871, RPD = 2.7454). This study reveals that combining textural and spectral information improves the quantitative detection of LCC in apple leaves infected with mosaic disease, leading to higher estimation accuracy.

Sensor-based ore sorting is a technology used to classify high-grade mineralized rocks from low-grade waste rocks to reduce operation costs. Many ore-sorting algorithms using color images have been proposed in the past, but only some validate their results using mineral grades or optimize the algorithms to classify rocks in real-time. This paper presents an ore-sorting algorithm based on image processing and machine learning that is able to classify rocks from a gold and silver mine based on their grade. The algorithm is composed of four main stages: (1) image segmentation and partition, (2) color and texture feature extraction, (3) sub-image classification using neural networks, and (4) a voting system to determine the overall class of the rock. The algorithm was trained using images of rocks that a geologist manually classified according to their mineral content and then was validated using a different set of rocks analyzed in a laboratory to determine their gold and silver grades. The proposed method achieved a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.961 points, higher than other classification algorithms based on support vector machines and convolutional neural networks, and a processing time under 44 ms, promising for real-time ore sorting applications.

High throughput field phenotyping techniques employing multispectral cameras allow extracting a variety of variables and features to predict yield and yield related traits, but little is known about which types of multispectral features are optimal to forecast yield potential in the early growth phase. In this study, we aim to identify multispectral features that are able to accurately predict yield and aid in variety classification at different growth stages throughout the season. Furthermore, we hypothesize that texture features (TFs) are more suitable for variety classification than for yield prediction. Throughout 2021 and 2022, a trial involving 19 and 18 European wheat varieties, respectively, was conducted. Multispectral images, encompassing visible, Red-edge, and near-infrared (NIR) bands, were captured at 19 and 22 time points from tillering to harvest using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the first and second year of trial. Subsequently, orthomosaic images were generated, and various features were extracted, including single-band reflectances, vegetation indices (VI), and TFs derived from a gray level correlation matrix (GLCM). The performance of these features in predicting yield and classifying varieties at different growth stages was assessed using random forest models. Measurements during the flowering stage demonstrated superior performance for most features. Specifically, Red reflectance achieved a root mean square error (RMSE) of 52.4 g m-2 in the first year and 64.4 g m-2 in the second year. The NDRE VI yielded the most accurate predictions with an RMSE of 49.1 g m-2 and 60.6 g m-2, respectively. Moreover, TFs such as CONTRAST and DISSIMILARITY displayed the best performance in predicting yield, with RMSE values of 55.5 g m-2 and 66.3 g m-2 across the two years of trial. Combining data from different dates enhanced yield prediction and stabilized predictions across dates. TFs exhibited high accuracy in classifying low and high-yielding varieties. The CORRELATION feature achieved an accuracy of 88% in the first year, while the HOMOGENEITY feature reached 92% accuracy in the second year. This study confirms the hypothesis that TFs are more suitable for variety classification than for yield prediction. The results underscore the potential of TFs derived from multispectral images in early yield prediction and varietal classification, offering insights for HTP and precision agriculture alike.

Microsatellites are short strings of repeated sequences scattered throughout the human genome. Microsatellite Instability (MSI) is a phenomenon in which the length of microsatellites changes due to the insertion or deletion of repeated units in tumor tissues. MSI type gastric cancer often has unique molecular phenotypes and clinicopathological characteris- tics, and the instability of microsatellites determines whether gastric cancer patients respond well to immunotherapy. Therefore, preoperative detection of MSI status is of great significance for the formulation of treatment plans for gastric cancer patients. Traditional MSI detection methods require immunohistochemistry and genetic analysis, which not only require additional costs, but also are difficult to be extended to every patient in clinical practice. In this paper, image feature extraction technology and machine learning algorithm are applied to quantitative analysis of high-resolution histopathological images of gastric cancer patients to predict the MSI status of gastric cancer patients. The original data of 279 cases are obtained from the TCGA database. After pre-processing and up-sampling, 442 samples are obtained, and 445 quantitative image features are extracted from the histopathological images of each sample, including the first-order statistics, texture features and small wave characteristics of the images. Lasso regression is used to screen features and construct predictive labels (Risk-score) of gastric cancer MSI status, and the performance of predictive labels is verified through logistics classification model. Then, multivariate analysis is carried out in combination with the clinical characteristics of each patient, and personalized train diagram is constructed for MSI status prediction. The experimental results show that the prediction performance AUC value of the prediction label based on histone image texture features is 0.74, and the AUC value of the existing MSI prediction model based on histone image texture features is 0.73. Based on all samples, the AUC value of the MSI prediction model constructed by combining clinical features and Risk- score is 0.802, while the AUC value of the existing MSI prediction model combining clinical features and image features is only 0.752, compared with the existing methods, the MSI prediction model proposed in this paper has better prediction performance and can provide more valuable reference information for the clinical decision-making of gastric cancer patients. At present, rapid, nondestructive, and objective identification of unqualified salted sea cucumbers with excessive salt content is extremely difficult. Artificial identification is the most common method, which is based on observing sea cucumber deformation during recovery after applying-removing pressure contact. This study is aimed at simulating the artificial identification method and establishing an identification model to distinguish whether the salted sea cucumber exceeds the standard by means of machine vision and machine learning technology. The system for identification of salted sea cucumbers was established, which was used for delivering the standard and uniform pressure forces and collecting the deformation images of salted sea cucumbers during the recovery after pressure removal. Image texture features of contour variation were extracted based on histograms (HIS) and gray level cooccurrence matrix (GLCM), which were used to establish the identification model by combining general regression neural networks (GRNN) and support vector machine (SVM), respectively. Contour variation features of salted sea cucumbers were extracted using a specific algorithm to improve the accuracy and stability of the model. Then, the dimensionality reduction and fusion of the feature images were achieved. According to the results of the models, the SVM identification model integrated with GLCM (GLCM-SVM) was found to be optimal, with accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 100%, 100%, and 100%, respectively. In particular, the sensitivity reached 100%, demonstrating an excellent identification ability to excessively salted sea cucumbers of the optimized model. Timely and accurate detection of crop water stress is vital for precision irrigation. Whether the accuracy of the prevailing diagnosis of crop water stress using vegetation indices (VIs) and spectral reflectance can be improved still remains to be investigated. The crop surface characteristics such as grayscale or color vary under different water stress, so in this study one more variable, image texture, was utilized together to diagnose water stress. For this end, the canopy image of winter wheat in bloom was obtained by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with multispectral sensor, and the effect of soil background was eliminated using vegetation index threshold method. On this basis, Grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) was used to calculate the mean (MEA), variance (VAR), homogeneity (HOM), contrast (CON), dissimilarity (DIS), entropy (ENT), second moment (SEC) and correlation (COR) of the image texture under different spatial resolutions (0.008 m, 0.01 m, 0.02 m, 0.05 m, 0.1 m and 0.2 m). Next, the canopy vegetation indices were obtained by mathematical transformation of canopy reflectance, and then sensitive image texture and vegetation indices by full subset regression method. Finally, Cubist, BPNN (Back Propagation Neural Network) and ELM (Extreme Learning Machine) methods were adopted to build the estimation models of the stomatal conductance (Gs) of winter wheat (between the sensitive image texture and Gs, and between vegetation index and Gs), and the water stress map was plotted based on the optimal Gs estimation model. The result showed: (i) the image texture obtained from the high-resolution multispectral image had a high correlation with Gs, and the image texture (VAR, HOM, CON, DIS, ENT and SEC) at 550 nm had the most significant correlation; (ii) the higher the ground resolution, the higher the correlation between the Gs and the image texture, the vegetation indices, respectively. The image texture with a ground resolution of 0.008 m combined with VIs and Gs had the highest correlation, and combining image texture and vegetation index can significantly improve the estimation accuracy of winter wheat Gs; (iii) Among the three estimation models, the BPNN model constructed by combining the image texture and VIs (MEA, VAR, ENT, DWSI and EXG) had the best estimation performance (Calibration: R c 2 = 0.899, RMSE c = 0.01, MAE c = 0.006; Validation: R c 2 = 0.834, RMSE v =;0.018, MAE v = 0.014), and an accurate estimation could even be achieved at a lower Gs value. Compared with the BPNN model solely based on VIs or image texture, the R c 2 of the BPNN model based on the combined variables increased by 24% and 22.48%, respectively. Therefore, combining UAV multispectral image texture and VIs to estimate Gs provides a feasible and accurate method for water stress diagnosis of winter wheat. • The incorporation of texture improved the accuracy of water stress diagnoses with VIs. • BPNN model with VIs and texture provided the highest accuracy of Gs estimation. • UAV provides a feasible and accurate method for water stress diagnosis of winter wheat. • Removing soil background and screening methods improve the quality of remote sensing data. The performance of machine learning (ML)-based path loss models relies heavily on the data they use at their inputs. Feature engineering is, therefore, essential for the model's success. In this letter, at hand, we extract a new set of input features, based on image texture. The image that we use represents the footprint of the urban built-up area, where the gray scale values of the building blocks are analogue to their heights. We extract texture information by applying the segmentation-based fractal texture analysis algorithm on the orthogonal area that is bounded between the transmitter and the receiver. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that such a technique is applied to a path loss modeling problem in electromagnetics. The algorithm, thus, delivers a new set of features, based on the image's texture, which eventually reveal the built-up profile of the area. These new features are injected to an already existing feature set. Comparative analysis shows that the addition of texture-based features leads to enhanced predictions, for a diverse set of transmitter heights, ML algorithms, and performance metrics. Abstract Textures have become widely adopted as an essential tool for lesion detection and classification through analysis of the lesion heterogeneities. In this study, higher order derivative images are being employed to combat the challenge of the poor contrast across similar tissue types among certain imaging modalities. To make good use of the derivative information, a novel concept of vector texture is firstly introduced to construct and extract several types of polyp descriptors. Two widely used differential operators, i.e., the gradient operator and Hessian operator, are utilized to generate the first and second order derivative images. These derivative volumetric images are used to produce two angle-based and two vector-based (including both angle and magnitude) textures. Next, a vector-based co-occurrence matrix is proposed to extract texture features which are fed to a random forest classifier to perform polyp classifications. To evaluate the performance of our method, experiments are implemented over a private colorectal polyp dataset obtained from computed tomographic colonography. We compare our method with four existing state-of-the-art methods and find that our method can outperform those competing methods over 4%-13% evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristics curves.

Aggregate segregation is a major form of defect that accelerates the pavement deterioration rate. Therefore, asphalt pavement segregation needs to be detected accurately and early during the quality survey process. This study proposes and verifies a computer vision based method for automatic identification of aggregate segregation. The new method includes Extreme Gradient Boosting Machine integrated with Attractive Repulsive Center-Symmetric Local Binary Pattern (ARCSLBP-XGBoost) and Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN). Experimental results obtained from a repetitive random data sampling process with 20 runs show that the ARCSLBP-XGBoost is a capable approach for detecting asphalt pavement segregation with outstanding performance measurement metrics (classification accuracy rate = 0.95, precision = 0.93, recall = 0.98, and F1 score = 0.95). During the phase of building survey, spalling and its severity should be detected as earlier as possible to provide timely information on structural heath to building maintenance agency. Correct detection of spall severity can significantly help decision makers develop effective maintenance schedule and prioritize their financial resources better. This study aims at developing a computer vision-based method for automatic classification of concrete spalling severity. Based on input image of concrete surface, the method is capable of distinguishing between a minor spalling in which the depth of the broken-off material is less than the concrete cover layer and a deep spalling in which the reinforcing steel bars have been revealed. To characterize concrete surface condition, image texture descriptors of statistical measurement of color channels, gray-level run length, and center-symmetric local binary pattern are used. Based on these texture-based features, the support vector machine classifier optimized by the jellyfish search metaheuristic is put forward to construct a decision boundary that partitions the input data into two classes of shallow spalling and deep spalling. A dataset consisting of 300 image samples has been collected to train and verify the proposed computer vision method. Experimental results supported by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test point out that the newly developed method is highly suitable for concrete spall severity classification with accuracy rate = 93.33%, F1 score = 0.93, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.97. Image classification is widely used to build predictive models for breast cancer diagnosis. Most existing approaches overwhelmingly rely on deep convolutional networks to build such diagnosis pipelines. These model architectures, although remarkable in performance, are black-box systems that provide minimal insight into the inner logic behind their predictions. This is a major drawback as the explainability of prediction is vital for applications such as cancer diagnosis. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing an explainable machine learning pipeline for breast cancer diagnosis based on ultrasound images. We extract first- and second-order texture features of the ultrasound images and use them to build a probabilistic ensemble of decision tree classifiers. Each decision tree learns to classify the input ultrasound image by learning a set of robust decision thresholds for texture features of the image. The decision path of the model predictions can then be interpreted by decomposing the learned decision trees. Introduction: Canopy stomatal conductance (Sc) indicates the strength of photosynthesis and transpiration of plants. In addition, Sc is a physiological indicator that is widely employed to detect crop water stress. Unfortunately, existing methods for measuring canopy Sc are time-consuming, laborious, and poorly representative. Methods: To solve these problems, in this study, we combined multispectral vegetation index (VI) and texture features to predict the Sc values and used citrus trees in the fruit growth period as the research object. To achieve this, VI and texture feature data of the experimental area were obtained using a multispectral camera. The H (Hue), S (Saturation) and V (Value) segmentation algorithm and the determined threshold of VI were used to obtain the canopy area images, and the accuracy of the extraction results was evaluated. Subsequently, the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) was used to calculate the eight texture features of the image, and then the full subset filter was used to obtain the sensitive image texture features and VI. Support vector regression, random forest regression, and k-nearest neighbor regression (KNR) Sc prediction models were constructed, which were based on single and combined variables Results: The analysis revealed the following: 1) the accuracy of the HSV segmentation algorithm was the highest, achieving more than 80%. The accuracy of the VI threshold algorithm using excess green was approximately 80%, which achieved accurate segmentation. 2) The citrus tree photosynthetic parameters were all affected by different water supply treatments. The greater the degree of water stress, the lower the net photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr), and Sc of the leaves. 3) In the three Sc prediction models, The KNR model, which was constructed by combining image texture features and VI had the optimum prediction effect (training set: R2 = 0.91076, RMSE = 0.00070; validation set; R2 = 0.77937, RMSE = 0.00165). Compared with the KNR model, which was only based on VI or image texture features, the R2 of the validation set of the KNR model based on combined variables was improved respectively by 6.97% and 28.42%. Discussion: This study provides a reference for large-scale remote sensing monitoring of citrus Sc by multispectral technology. Moreover, it can be used to monitor the dynamic changes of Sc and provide a new technique for gaining a better understanding of the growth status and water stress of citrus crops. Finding patches is a crucial step in a pavement performance survey. The study develops a machine learning and image processing algorithm-established automatic method for identifying asphalt pavement patches. The GrayLevel Co-Occurrence Matrix and image texture-based features derived from color channel statistics are used as input parameters to describe the condition of the pavement. For feature extraction, image processing methods like the projective integral of images, steerable filters, and an improved image thresholding method were used. Support Vector Machine is employed for categorizing the differentiating patched regions from non-patch ones. The suggested combination of image texture analytical methods has been trained using an IA data set created from 400 image samples. The feature set, which combines the characteristics of cracked objects with those generated from the projective integral, can produce the desired result. To make the model's execution simpler, a patch recognition program was created and implemented in MATLAB. As a result, the recently created method has the potential to be an instrument for traffic management organizations through the assessment of pavement performance. The results of the experiments indicate that the newly developed method may achieve excellent accuracy prediction results with a classifier performance rate of about 96%. Texture-based informal settlement (IS) mapping has gained attention in urban remote sensing (RS) research. Numerous studies conducted on the use of texture analysis for IS mapping have investigated wide-ranging sensors, algorithms, scale, classifiers, feature selection methods, and other factors of interest. However, no study has systematically investigated key factors affecting texture-based classification processes. This paper presents a detailed synthesis of scientific progress in texture based IS mapping. Results revealed that grey level co-occurrence matrix was the most popularly used algorithm.Quickbird was the widely used sensor. The use of machine-learning classifiers, particularly, support vector machine and random forest yielded, comparatively, high accuracies (>80%). Interestingly, deep learning showed potential to advance IS identification. Multi-city comparison studies demonstrated need for texture features to be locally specific in order to allow transferability.
