Abstract: A search is performed for a heavy particle decaying into different-flavour, dilepton final states, using 139 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s = 13 TeV collected in 2015–2018 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Final states with electrons, muons and hadronically decaying tau leptons are considered (eμ, eτ or μτ). No significant excess over the Standard Model predictions is observed. Upper limits on the production cross-section are set as a function of the mass of a Z′ boson, a supersymmetric τ-sneutrino, and a quantum black-hole. The observed 95% CL lower mass limits obtained on a typical benchmark model Z′ boson are 5.0 TeV (eμ), 4.0 TeV (eτ), and 3.9 TeV (μτ), respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We present a search for seven lepton-flavor-violating neutral charm meson decays of the type D0→X0e±μ, where X0 represents a π0, KS0, K̄∗0, ρ0, φ, ω, or η meson. The analysis is based on 468 fb-1 of e+e- annihilation data collected at or close to the (4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. No significant signals are observed, and we establish 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range (5.0-22.5)×10-7. The limits are between 1 and 2 orders of magnitude more stringent than previous measurements., We are grateful for the extraordinary contributions of our PEP-II colleagues in achieving the excellent luminosity and machine conditions that have made this work possible. Abstract: We report a measurement of the inclusive semileptonic branching fraction of the B_s meson using data collected with the BaBar detector in the center-of-mass (CM) energy region above the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We use the inclusive yield of phi mesons and the phi yield in association with a high-momentum lepton to perform a simultaneous measurement of the semileptonic branching fraction and the production rate of B_s mesons relative to all B mesons as a function of CM energy. The inclusive semileptonic branching fraction of the B_s meson is determined to be B(B_s to l nu X)=9.5 (+2.5/-2.0)(stat)(+1.1/-1.9)(syst)%, where l indicates the average of e and mu., 8 pages, 7 eps figures

Abstract: We present measurements of the branching fractions of three-prong and five-prong tau decay modes using a sample of 430 million tau lepton pairs, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 468 fb(-1), collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e_e storage rings at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The tau(-) -> (3 pi)(-) eta nu(tau), tau(-) -> (3 pi)(-) omega nu(tau), and tau(-) f(1) (1285)nu(tau) branching fractions are presented, as well as a new limit on the branching fraction of the second-class current decay tau(-) -> pi(-) eta'(958)nu(tau). We search for the decay mode tau(-) -> K- eta'(958)nu(tau) and for five-prong decay modes with kaons, and place the first upper limits on their branching fractions.

Abstract: The results of a search for direct pair production of top squarks in events with two opposite-charge leptons (electrons or muons) are reported, using $$36.1~\hbox {fb}^{-1}$$ of integrated luminosity from proton-proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. To cover a range of mass differences between the top squark $$\tilde{t}$$ and lighter supersymmetric particles, four possible decay modes of the top squark are targeted with dedicated selections: the decay $$\tilde{t} \rightarrow b \tilde{\chi }_{1}^{\pm }$$ into a b-quark and the lightest chargino with $$\tilde{\chi }_{1}^{\pm } \rightarrow W \tilde{\chi }_{1}^{0}$$ , the decay $$\tilde{t} \rightarrow t \tilde{\chi }_{1}^{0}$$ into an on-shell top quark and the lightest neutralino, the three-body decay $$\tilde{t} \rightarrow b W \tilde{\chi }_{1}^{0}$$ and the four-body decay $$\tilde{t} \rightarrow b \ell \nu \tilde{\chi }_{1}^{0}$$ . No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model background for any selection, and limits on top squarks are set as a function of the $$\tilde{t}$$ and $$\tilde{\chi }_{1}^{0}$$ masses. The results exclude at 95% confidence level $$\tilde{t}$$ masses up to about 720 GeV, extending the exclusion region of supersymmetric parameter space covered by previous searches. Abstract: Observables sensitive to the anomalous production of events containing hadronic jets and missing momentum in the plane transverse to the proton beams at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. The observables are defined as a ratio of cross sections, for events containing jets and large missing transverse momentum to events containing jets and a pair of charged leptons from the decay of a $$Z/\gamma ^*$$ boson. This definition minimises experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties in the measurements. This ratio is measured differentially with respect to a number of kinematic properties of the hadronic system in two phase-space regions; one inclusive single-jet region and one region sensitive to vector-boson-fusion topologies. The data are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model predictions and used to constrain a variety of theoretical models for dark-matter production, including simplified models, effective field theory models, and invisible decays of the Higgs boson. The measurements use 3.2 fb $$^{-1}$$ of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 $$\text {TeV}$$ and are fully corrected for detector effects, meaning that the data can be used to constrain new-physics models beyond those shown in this paper. Abstract: This paper presents single lepton and dilepton kinematic distributions measured in dileptonic $$t\bar{t}$$ events produced in 20.2 $$\hbox {fb}^{-1}$$ of $$\sqrt{s}=8$$ TeV pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Both absolute and normalised differential cross-sections are measured, using events with an opposite-charge $$e\mu $$ pair and one or two b-tagged jets. The cross-sections are measured in a fiducial region corresponding to the detector acceptance for leptons, and are compared to the predictions from a variety of Monte Carlo event generators, as well as fixed-order QCD calculations, exploring the sensitivity of the cross-sections to the gluon parton distribution function. Some of the distributions are also sensitive to the top quark pole mass; a combined fit of NLO fixed-order predictions to all the measured distributions yields a top quark mass value of $${m_t^{\mathrm {pole}}}=173.2\pm 0.9\pm 0.8\pm 1.2$$ GeV, where the three uncertainties arise from data statistics, experimental systematics, and theoretical sources. Abstract: A search for new phenomena in final states characterized by high jet multiplicity, an isolated lepton (electron or muon) and either zero or at least three b-tagged jets is presented. The search uses 36.1 fb of $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. The dominant sources of background are estimated using parameterized extrapolations, based on observables at medium jet multiplicity, to predict the b-tagged jet multiplicity distribution at the higher jet multiplicities used in the search. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed and 95% confidence-level limits are extracted constraining four simplified models of R-parity-violating supersymmetry that feature either gluino or top-squark pair production. The exclusion limits reach as high as 2.1 TeV in gluino mass and 1.2 TeV in top-squark mass in the models considered. In addition, an upper limit is set on the cross-section for Standard Model $$ t\overline{t}t\overline{t} $$ production of 60 fb (6.5 × the Standard Model prediction) at 95% confidence level. The analysis relies on the identification of b-jets and high missing transverse momentum to achieve good sensitivity. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb, is used for the search. No significant excess over the Standard Model prediction is observed. The results are interpreted in several simplified supersymmetric models featuring R-parity conservation or R-parity violation, extending the exclusion limits from previous searches. In models considering gluino pair production, gluino masses are excluded up to 1.87 TeV at 95% confidence level. When bottom squarks are pair-produced and decay to a chargino and a top quark, models with bottom squark masses below 700 GeV and light neutralinos are excluded at 95% confidence level. Abstract: The top quark mass is measured using a template method in the t t ¯ → lepton + jets channel (lepton is e or μ ) using ATLAS data recorded in 2012 at the LHC. The data were taken at a proton–proton centre-of-mass energy of s = 8 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb - 1 . The t t ¯ → lepton + jets channel is characterized by the presence of a charged lepton, a neutrino and four jets, two of which originate from bottom quarks (b). Exploiting a three-dimensional template technique, the top quark mass is determined together with a global jet energy scale factor and a relative b-to-light-jet energy scale factor. The mass of the top quark is measured to be m top = 172.08 ± 0.39 (stat) ± 0.82 (syst) GeV . Abstract: In a sample of 471 million BB events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider we study the rare decays B -> K(*) l+ l-, where l+ l- is either e+e- or mu+mu-. We report results on partial branching fractions and isospin asymmetries in seven bins of di-lepton mass-squared. We further present CP and lepton-flavor asymmetries for di-lepton masses below and above the J/psi resonance. We find no evidence for CP or lepton-flavor violation. The partial branching fractions and isospin asymmetries are consistent with the Standard Model predictions and with results from other experiments., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted by Phys. Abstract: This Letter presents a search for a heavy neutral particle decaying into an opposite-sign different-flavor dilepton pair, e±μ∓, e±τ∓, or μ±τ∓ using 20.3 fb-1 of pp collision data at √s=8 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The numbers of observed candidate events are compatible with the standard model expectations. Limits are set on the cross section of new phenomena in two scenarios: the production of υ~τ in R-parity-violating supersymmetric models and the production of a lepton-flavor- violating Z' vector boson. Abstract: Many extensions of the Standard Model posit the existence of heavy particles with long lifetimes. This article presents the results of a search for events containing at least one long-lived particle that decays at a significant distance from its production point into two leptons or into five or more charged particles. This analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1 collected in 2012 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. No events are observed in any of the signal regions, and limits are set on model parameters within supersymmetric scenarios involving R-parity violation, split supersymmetry, and gauge mediation. In some of the search channels, the trigger and search strategy are based only on the decay products of individual long-lived particles, irrespective of the rest of the event. Abstract: Measurements of the branching ratios of top quark decays into leptons and jets using events with tt (top antitop) pairs are reported. Events were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The collected data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb-1. Abstract: The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to search for the lepton flavor violating process Z → eμ in pp collisions using 20.3 fb-1 of data collected at ... = 8 TeV. An enhancement in the eμ invariant mass spectrum is searched for at the Z-boson mass. The number of Z bosons produced in the data sample is estimated using events of similar topology, Z → ee and μμ, significantly reducing the systematic uncertainty in the measurement. There is no evidence of an enhancement at the Z-boson mass, resulting in an upper limit on the branching fraction, B(Z → eμ) < 7.5 x 10-7 at the 95% confidence level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Results from a search for supersymmetry in events with four or more leptons including electrons, muons and taus are presented. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to 20.3??fb-1 of proton-proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider at √s=8??TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Signal regions are designed to target supersymmetric scenarios that can be either enriched in or depleted of events involving the production of a Z boson. No significant deviations are observed in data from standard model predictions and results are used to set upper limits on the event yields from processes beyond the standard model. Exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on the masses of relevant supersymmetric particles are obtained. In R-parity-violating simplified models with decays of the lightest supersymmetric particle to electrons and muons, limits of 1350 and 750 GeV are placed on gluino and chargino masses, respectively. In R-parity-conserving simplified models with heavy neutralinos decaying to a massless lightest supersymmetric particle, heavy neutralino masses up to 620 GeV are excluded. Abstract: A search is presented for production of dark-matter particles recoiling against a leptonically decaying ? boson in 20.3 fb-1 of pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with large missing transverse momentum and two oppositely charged electrons or muons consistent with the decay of a ? boson are analyzed. No excess above the Standard Model prediction is observed. Limits are set on the mass scale of the contact interaction as a function of the dark-matter particle mass using an effective field theory description of the interaction of dark matter with quarks or with ? bosons.
