Abstract

This paper reports on the second phase of a multi-country study examining cross cultural perspectives of gender and management in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It examines the broader labour market context and legislative frameworks for higher education in each country and then analyses the literature on women in university management. The paper presents the findings of research with male and female senior managers about their perceptions of women as HEI managers within changing organisational and management structures. It concludes that although HEI's are now largely aware of barriers to women getting into and on in senior management, they have not addressed the organisational structures and cultures that perpetuate this inequity. Abstract

With labor markets increasingly relaying on higher skill levels and transversal competencies, higher education should equip students with the advanced knowledge skills and competencies they need throughout their professional lives. Higher education institutions together with governments, government agencies and employers, shall improve the provision, accessibility and quality of their careers and employment related guidance services to students and alumni. To reach these goals it is essentially for universities to develop functional partnerships with representatives of the labor market. Until now, no Romanian higher education institution has had such a partnership, the collaboration being, in most cases, a formal one. The present paper describes, based on the other countries' experience, the main characteristics of the universities - industry partnerships. We appreciate that having such types of structures in the organizational schemes of the universities will allow institutions to be more responsive to employers needs and employers to better understand the educational perspective.
