This paper provides novel analysis methods and detailed simulations for determining the impact of out-of-band emissions (OOBE) of adjacent band wireless services on mobile receive-only wireless services. Using the interference from the adjacent cellular bands on an operational digital wireless receive-only system as an example, we demonstrate the impact of the interference from adjacent cellular band transmitters and determine the performance impact such as outage on satellite receivers in realistic roadway conditions. This paper presents new methods for determining appropriate OOBE spectral masks for use by new cellular subscriber transmitters. This paper considers realistic propagation and traffic conditions in five cities throughout the United States and offers approaches that the engineering community may use to determine interference conditions between new cellular and fixed broadband mobile services in adjacent spectrum bands to existing receive-only mobile receiver systems, such as satellite radio. Many spatial phenomena exhibit interference, where exposures at one location may affect the response at other locations. Because interference violates the stable unit treatment value assumption, standard methods for causal inference do not apply. We propose a new causal framework to recover direct and spill‐over effects in the presence of spatial interference, taking into account that exposures at nearby locations are more influential than exposures at locations further apart. Under the no unmeasured confounding assumption, we show that a generalized propensity score is sufficient to remove all measured confounding. To reduce dimensionality issues, we propose a Bayesian spline‐based regression model accounting for a sufficient set of variables for the generalized propensity score. A simulation study demonstrates the accuracy and coverage properties. We apply the method to estimate the causal effect of wildland fires on air pollution in the Western United States over 2005–2018. Associative memory involves the ability to encode and remember the relationship between individual items. This ability can become diminished when there is a high degree of similarity between stimuli that are being learned. Associative memory errors often stem from the fact that lures include a high degree of item familiarity as well as mnemonic similarity with the original associative episode. The current set of experiments examined how this overlap, in the form of within-category similarity, affects veridical and false retrieval in both younger and older adults. Across three experiments, results suggest that mnemonic overlap between targets and lures is detrimental to the ability to discriminate between highly similar information. Specifically, shared category membership for targets and lures led to increased false associative memories across age groups. These results have implications for scenarios where there is a high degree of overlap between target and lure events and indicate that these types of associative memory distinctions are difficult irrespective of age. Implementation trials often involve clustering via risk networks, where only some participants directly receive the intervention. The individual effect is that among directly treated persons beyond being in an intervention network; the disseminated effect is that among persons engaged with those directly treated. In this article, we employ a causal inference framework and discuss assumptions and estimators for individual and disseminated effects and apply them to the HIV Prevention Trials Network 037 Study. HIV Prevention Trials Network 037 was a phase III, network-level, randomized controlled human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention trial conducted in the United States and Thailand from 2002 to 2006 that recruited injection drug users, who were assigned to either an intervention group or a control group, and their risk network members, who received no direct intervention. Combining individual and disseminated effects, we observed a 35% composite rate reduction in the adjusted model (risk ratio = 0.65, 95% confidence interval: 0.47, 0.90). Methodology is now available for estimating the full set of these effects, enhancing knowledge gained from network-randomized trials. Although the overall effect gains validity from network randomization, we show that it will generally be less than the composite effect. Additionally, if only index participants benefit from the intervention, as the network size increases, the overall effect tends toward the null—an unfortunate and misleading conclusion. Wireless communications play a critical role in national security and disaster relief and are extensively utilized by first responder teams, such as police officers, firefighters, and ambulances. The first responders in emergency situations need to always be connected with one another and with the remote service centers for effective cooperation and coordination. However, the existing public safety (PS) services fail to satisfy the PS user requirements in many emergency scenarios, which usually leads to exceptionally high traffic loads. As a result, increasing the network capacity is one of the primary concerns, and spectrum sharing has been deemed the key solution. With appropriate spectrum sharing partnerships among PS agencies and commercial networks, PS users can access licensed PS spectrum, shared spectrum, as well as commercial networks when the need arises. In this article we present different initiatives undertaken by Wireless @ Virginia Tech toward the next generation PS network. We also discuss our vision of a flexible, rapidly deployable, and reconfigurable PS system to meet imminent and future demands on critical communications infrastructure and discuss the value of spectrum sharing for supporting this long-term vision. Both U.S. Generally Accepted Auditing Standards and International Standards on Auditing require risk-based audits, where audit effort is concentrated on accounts and financial statement assertions where the risk of material misstatement is high. Assessing risk requires the auditor to evaluate the auditee's internal control systems; however, current standards and practice vary regarding the point at which risks are to be identified. Using output interference theory, we hypothesize that risk assessment performed by the auditor before evaluating the client's internal control systems will lead to a more complete identification of sources of internal control deficiencies as compared to assessing risk after evaluating internal control systems. In our experiment, auditors who identified risks first identified more, and more important, internal control deficiencies than did auditors identifying controls first, although the number of risks identified was not significantly different between the two groups. Overall, our results suggest that audit efficiency and effectiveness depend on the sequence in which internal control evaluation subtasks are performed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
