The Neoproterozoic Jiangnan orogenic belt records the accretion and collision between the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks in South China. The orogen is divisible into three units: a northeastern domain (also referred to as the Huaiyu or Shuangxiwu domain), a central domain (Jiuling domain) and an undifferentiated southwestern domain. Detrital zircons from the oldest sequences (Shuangqiaoshan, Lengjiaxi, Fanjingshan and Sibao groups) in the central and southwest domains yield similar age spectra with major age populations at c. 875–820 Ma, along with minor Palaeo- to Mesoproterozoic and Archaean ages. The dominance of detrital ages close to the deposition ages of the units, along with juvenile zircon Hf isotopic compositions and arc-like whole-rock compositional data, indicate the sedimentary units accumulated adjacent to a convergent plate margin magmatic arc. The presence of Mesoproterozoic and older zircons, both as detritus in the units and as xenocrysts within igneous rocks displaying a subduction-related signature, along with the compositional data, place the magmatic arc along a continental margin. In the northeastern domain, the oldest coeval sequence (Shuangxiwu and Qigong groups) and arc igneous suites are dated at c. 970–850 Ma, and lack older detritus and xenocrysts, indicating they represent an accreted oceanic arc system. The Neoproterozoic Jiangnan Orogen in South China records a succession of arc-trench-basin assemblages culminating in accretion of the bounding Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks to form the stabilized South China Craton. The orogen can be traced over some 1500 km and extends up to 100 km across strike. It is divisible into three domains: the northeast domain (also referred to as the Huaiyu or Shuangxiwu Terrane), the central domain (Jiuling Terrane), and an undifferentiated southwest domain. The northeast domain contains arc type volcanic suites and I-type granitoids dated at ca. 970–850 Ma. It is interpreted as an intra–oceanic terrane based on the juvenile radiogenic isotopic signature of the igneous rocks, the absence of older detritus and inherited xenocrysts, and the presence of ophiolites along its southwestern and western margins. The central and southwest domains contain trench-arc-basin assemblages of clastic sedimentary units, mappable magmatic arc suites and ophiolitic mélanges (Sibao and equivalent groups) that range in age from ca. 880 to 820–815 Ma. The presence of old zircon grains within these two domains, both as detritus within sedimentary units and as inherited zircon in arc basalt, suggest they formed at convergent continental margins. S-type granites dated at 845–815 Ma are a distinctive element of the central and southwest domains. The ages of these granites overlap with convergent plate magmatism in the two domains, arguing against previous models for plume-rift and post-collisional geodynamic settings. Instead, these bodies likely formed in an accretionary orogenic margin setting in which granitic magmatism occurred in an extensional regime triggered by slab rollback. The slab-rollback process triggered mantle-sourced thermal input and partial melting of the older and buried arc-bounding basin sediments. Early Paleozoic S-type granites in the Lachlan and New England belts in eastern Australia and Jurassic ones in the Cordillera belt of the western US provide analogous geodynamic environments. Isotopic data indicate that the central Jiangnan domain experienced significant crustal growth, whereas in the southwest domain there was a greater degree of crustal reworking. The character and distribution of the early Neoproterozoic sedimentary and igneous succession in the orogen suggests it represents a ca. 970–820 Ma accretionary orogen. Upper age limits on the Jiangnan Orogen are provided by a regional angular unconformity in the central and southwest domains at ca. 810–805 Ma, and in the northeast domain at ca. 825 Ma, along with the overlying bimodal volcanic and clastic sedimentary successions mostly dated at ca. 810–730 Ma. Thus, timing of final assembly of South China displays variations across the Jiangnan Orogen, from ca. 825 Ma in the northeast to ca. 820–805 Ma in the central and southwest of the orogen. Post-assembly successions are parts of the Nanhua Basin and are interpreted to have formed during regional lithospheric extension across the eastern and central South China Craton. The age patterns across the South China Craton are indicative of northwest directed accretion of fragments and suggest an external rather than an internal position of the craton within the assembled Rodinia supercontinent. Paleomagnetic data, regional correlations and sedimentary records are consistent with a position along the northern margin of Rodinia, adjacent to India and Australia. The Jiangnan Orogen recorded the accretion of trench-arc assemblages and ultimately the Yangtze Block to the Cathaysia Block that was already located on the margin of Rodinia. The Panxi-Hanan belt, which lies along the western and northwestern margin of the Yangtze Block, formed on the upper plate to a subduction system that both overlaps with, and is younger than, the Jiangnan Orogen. The Trans-North China Orogen is a major Neoarchean Paleoproterozoic collisional orogenic belt above the North China Craton, formed due to prolonged and complex processes. Even though many Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic magmatic and metamorphic activities have been reported, due to the Huozhou Complex's small outcropping range, little attention has been paid to the origin of various igneous rocks of the Huozhou Complex in the center of the Trans-North China Orogen. The Huozhou Complex, located south of the Lüliang, Wutai, and Hengshan complexes, is an important window into the Early Precambrian structure and evolution of the North China Craton. Its magma and metamorphism are crucial to understanding the development of the structural evolution of the Trans-North China Orogen. The Huozhou metamorphic complex area exposes a range of Precambrian metamorphic rocks, among which the most extensively dispersed is felsic biotite plagioclase gneiss. In this study comprehensive geological field survey, micropetrology, chronology, geochemistry, and Hf isotope analysis were carried out for the Qinggangping and Anziping gneiss in the north of the Huozhou Complex. The results show that the magmatic zircon age of the Qinggangping gneiss is 2196 ± 14 Ma, and its protolith is I-type granite, formed by partial melting of igneous rocks in the absence of weathering. Its source is mainly the juvenile crust from depleted mantle dating 2431–2719 Ma, with a small amount of mantle-derived material. The Anziping gneiss has a metamorphic zircon age of 1931 ± 13 Ma with an S-type granite protolith belonging to peraluminous granite. The Anziping gneiss is formed by recycling pre-existing crustal components at 2613–2848 Ma. A minor quantity of mantle-derived magma is also introduced to the crust simultaneously. The samples of Qinggangping gneiss and Anziping gneiss show the characteristics of obvious negative Nb, Ti, and P elements in the spider diagram of primitive mantle standardization. This implies that the rocks have the characteristics of magmatic rocks in an island arc or subduction environment, which could have formed in the tectonic environment of the continental margin arc. The collision between India and Asia created the most significant orogenic system of the Cenozoic. Although numerous collision-related igneous rocks formed, many post-collisional rocks were emplaced but have received less attention. Recently, geophysical investigations and field observations have suggested significant lateral variations in crust-mantle structure beneath the collisional zone. However, there have been few attempts so far to reveal the possible relationship between the lateral variations in crust-mantle structure and the widely distributed post-collisional rocks. To reveal the possible linkage, we investigate the Pulu volcanic rocks in Western Kunlun, NW Tibet Plateau, through a combined analysis involving whole-rock geochemistry and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes, and mineralogy. The similar profiles (e.g., Fo and An values) of olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase phenocrysts, along with relatively consistent whole-rock isotopic compositions argue against mixing and significant crustal contamination. The sub-continental lithospheric mantle source (SCLM) was enriched by the input of sedimentary materials as indicated by Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions (87Sr/86 Sr (t) < 0.708884, 143Nd/144Nd > 0.512344, and 204Pb/207Pb < 15.6831). The Pulu volcanic rocks in Western Kunlun display high Rb/Sr ratios (> 0.05) and low Ba/Rb ratios (〈23), indicating an amphibole-free phlogopite residual source at a depth of >70 km. In addition, high LREE/HREE (La N /Yb N > 49) and Nb/Ta ratios (> 20), and olivine geothermometer confirm a garnet-bearing mantle source at >970 °C under eclogite-facies conditions. In contrast to other post-collisional rocks formed under low pressure and widely variable temperatures associated with the delamination and thinning of SCLM in the eastern and southern Tibet Plateau, post-collisional rocks in Western Kunlun formed under the high pressure and a narrow range of temperature are attributed to lithospheric fractures at great depths before delamination. Such contrasting P-T conditions of the post-collisional rocks in Western Kunlun and eastern and southern Tibet Plateau record lateral variations in crust-mantle structures beneath the India-Asia collisional zone. • No magma mixing occurred in the post-collisional rocks in Western Kunlun. • Post-collisional rocks have high P-T conditions in Western Kunlun. • The P-T conditions reflect lateral variations in the crust-mantle structure. • Northern Tarim possibly collided with southern Siberia at 1.8–2.0 Ga within Columbia, and drifted away at 0.9–1.5 Ga. • Southern Tarim possibly collided with north India during the assembly of Rodinia and drifted away at 800 Ma. • This model considers the Tarim Craton as a single block in the period from Columbia to Rodinia. The positions of the Tarim Craton in two Precambrian supercontinents Columbia and Rodinia still remain unknown or controversial, as the craton is largely covered by desert in the central part and only sparse Precambrian basement rocks are scattered at its margins. In this contribution, we attempt to use new in situ zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic data, combined with comprehensive compiled data from Precambrian basement rocks at its margins, to provide new insights into positions in two Precambrian supercontinents. Detrital zircon profiles of northern Tarim and southern Siberia are characterized by a peak at 2.0–1.8 Ga and the lack of 1.7–1.1 Ga zircons. Moreover, both the 2.0–1.8 Ga detrital zircons show remarkable similarities dominated by mostly negative εHf(t) values ranging from −15 to 0. In addition, 2.0–1.8 Ga collisional granitic rocks are exposed in two terranes. These suggest that northern Tarim likely collided with southern Siberia at 2.0–1.8 Ga during the assembly of Columbia. In southern Tarim, Neoproterozoic magmatic rocks were closely related with the evolution of Rodinia. The ~0.9 Ga Ma gneissic granites in Altyn Tagh area were formed in collisional settings due to the collision between southern Tarim and northern India during the assembly of Rodinia, which is supported by distinctly comparable zircon age spectra and Hf isotopes from Neoproterozoic strata in two terrenes. This model considers the Tarim Craton as a single block in the period from Columbia to Rodinia, which can explain different tectonomagamtic events in northern and southern Tarim. Contrasting models for internal and external locations of South China within the Nuna and Rodinia supercontinents can be resolved when the current lithotectonic associations of Mesoproterozoic and older rocks units that constitute the craton are redefined into four lithotectonic domains: Kongling, Kunming-Hainan, Wuyi, and Coastal. The Kongling and Kunming-Hainan domains are characterized by isolated Archean to early Paleoproterozoic rock units and events and crop out in northern and southern South China, respectively. The Kunming-Hainan Domain is preserved in three spatially separated regions at Kunming (southwestern South China), along the Ailaoshan shear zone, and within Hainan Island. Both domains were affected by late Paleoproterozoic tectonothermal events, indicating their likely juxtaposition by this time to form the proto-Yangtze Block. Late Paleoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic sedimentary and igneous rock units developed on the proto-Yangtze Block, especially in its southern portions, and help link the rock units that formed along the shear zone at Ailaoshan and on Hainan Island into a single, spatially unified unit prior to Paleozoic to Cenozoic structural disaggregation and translation. The Wuyi Domain consists of late Paleoproterozoic rock units within a NE-SW trending, fault-bounded block in eastern South China. The Coastal Domain lies east of the Wuyi domain and is inferred to constitute a structurally separate block. Basement to the domain is not exposed, but zircon Hf model ages from Mesozoic granites suggest Mesoproterozoic basement at depth. The Archean to Paleoproterozoic tectonothermal record of the Kongling and Kunming-Hainan domains corresponds closely with that of NW Laurentia, suggesting all were linked, probably in association with assembly and subsequent partial fragmentation of the Nuna supercontinent. Furthermore, the age and character of Mesoproterozoic magmatism and detrital zircon signature of sedimentary rocks in the proto-Yangtze Block matches well with western Laurentia and eastern Australia-Antarctica. In particular, the detrital zircon signature of late Paleoproterozoic to early Mesoproterozoic sedimentary units in the block (e.g. Dongchuan Group) share a similar age spectrum with the Wernecke Supergroup of northwest Laurentia. This, together with similarities in the type and age of Fe-Cu mineralization in the domain with that in eastern Australia-Antarctica, especially northeast Australia, suggests a location adjacent to northwest Laurentia, southern Siberia, and northeast Australia within the Nuna supercontinent. The timing and character of late Paleoproterozoic magmatic activity in the Wuyi domain along with age of detrital zircons in associated sedimentary rocks matches the record of northern India. During rifting between Australia–Antarctica and Laurentia in the late Mesoproterozoic, the proto-Yangtze Block remained linked to northeast Australia. During accretionary orogenesis in the early Neoproterozoic, the proto-Yangtze Block assembled with the Wuyi Domain along the northern margin of India. The Coastal domain likely accreted at this time forming the South China Craton. Displacement of the Hainan and Ailaoshan assemblages from southwest of the Kunming assemblage likely occurred in the Cenozoic with the activation of the Ailaoshan-Red River fault system but could have begun in the early to mid-Paleozoic based on evidence for tectonothermal events in the Hainan assemblage.
