The Transantarctic Mountains are an important corridor between the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Western Ross Sea, where most current ice streams and outlet glaciers arise. We investigated Ricker Hills, the largest exposed mountainous region between Southern Victoria Land and Terra Nova Bay, and dated the glacial landforms using in-situ cosmogenic-nuclide 10Be surface exposure dating to reconstruct the paleo-glacial dynamics. The surface of the Hollingsworth glacier lowered since the middle of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2 (22.1 ka); therefore, the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) occurred before that period. Cosmogenic, geomorphic, and climatic records constrained the glacial surface slope to be between 5.4° and 6.8°. The ice was 270–320 m thicker at the LGM (MIS 2) than presently but did not override the top surface of the Benson Knob. Moreover, previous glacial periods such as the local LGM (MIS 4) or Penultimate Glacial Maximum (MIS 6) maintained thicker ice than the LGM (MIS 2). The Ross Ice Shelf opening during the mid-Holocene (∼6 ka) caused the rapid collapse of the terminal outlet glaciers and supplied notable snow accumulation upstream, which stagnated lowering. The greatest lowering and retreat occurred during the late Holocene (2.3 ∼ 0.8 ka), when elephant seal colonies thrived in the Ross Embayment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sites of ice-stream discharge to the continental slope build trough-mouth fans from glacigenic debris flows (GDFs), subglacial meltwater flows, and suspended sediment. Thus, past ice configurations may be interpreted from the sedimentological record. This study links the records in cores, high-resolution seismic profiles, and multibeam swath bathymetry of Hatton Slope and Fan to the changing glaciological history in Hudson Strait, one of the largest ice streams of the late Pleistocene Laurentide Ice Sheet. 14C-AMS dates, X-ray fluorescence geochemical profiles, and oxygen isotopes in sixteen cores document sediment supply during the last glacial cycle, and earlier history is interpreted from seismic data. The Frobisher Bay slope sector has a long record of GDF deposits from severe glacial periods between MIS 6 and 22, with little impact of meltwater discharge. Mass-transport events and aggrading gravel-floored valleys dominate the northern Hatton slope sector. The central slope sector shows the greatest shelf break progradation by till deposition, with kilometre-spaced gullies heading at 700–730 mbsl from the last major grounding of the ice-stream on the upper slope during Heinrich event 3 (H3). The gullies pass downslope into ∼5 km wide valleys, which have been sites of sediment bypass since widespread meltwater flow in MIS 6 and show little aggradation since MIS 16. Intervening >50 m high ridges show alternating levee accretion and erosion by shallow mass-transport events. Downslope on Hatton Fan, GDFs are common and fill wide erosional channels that lead to the sandy braid plain of the central Labrador Sea. The channels of the southern sector and Saglek Slope have channeled turbidity currents down the NAMOC, and stratified contourite deposits accumulated on the fan. Over the MIS 1–3 period widely represented by cores, ice was grounded in Hatton Basin and on the upper slope to 700 m water depth only immediately prior to H3. Older and younger H events had a floating ice-shelf in Hatton Basin, and sedimentation was dominated by the retreat of that ice shelf to Resolution Island. Distal cores show no systematic difference between the H1–top H3 interval and the base H3–H5 interval. Given the supply of carbonate detritus of consistent composition back to at least H5, any MIS 3 deglaciation of Hudson Bay would require improbably high growth rates of ice sheets in the centre of the continent. • First multibeam swath bathymetric and seismic profiling of the Hudson Strait Ice Stream. • Glacigenic debris flows, and mass-transport events were outlined during MIS 6 and 16. • Glacial ice was grounded in Hatton Basin and on the upper slope to 700 m over MIS 1-3. • Lack of a systematic difference between H1–H3 and H4–H5 events raises the question about the deglaciation hypothesis during MIS 3. Antarctic fjords and coastal bays are excellent traps for sediment and represent key areas for high-resolution investigation of past environmental conditions. Robertson Bay is an understudied coastal area located at the confluence of the Ross Sea and the Southern Ocean. Recently obtained seafloor morphology data indicate the presence of a cross-shelf elongated valley, composed of three minor basins separated by sills and seabed ridges with an arcuate shape. Several cores were collected within the basins, and investigated using a multiproxy approach including sedimentological, chemical, geochemical, and micropaleontological characterization to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental evolution from the last glacial period to present. The ages of two of these cores are constrained using ramped pyrolysis oxidation radiocarbon dating. Four sedimentary facies were recognised from which we developed a sedimentary model covering the last 21,000 years (21 ka BP). Our record provide evidence for a covering ice shelf cover from 21 to 16.5 ka BP, which gradually receded between 16,5 and 11 ka BP due to the progressive intrusion of modified Circumpolar Deep Water, thereby promoting the formation of Ice Shelf Water and High Salinity Shelf Water. From 11 to 5,8 ka BP, the ice shelf continued shrinking and nutrient-rich of modified Circumpolar Deep Water penetration onto the continental shelf progressively favoured diatom blooms and a general increase in primary productivity until 5.8 ka BP. The Late Holocene is characterised by an alternation of prolonged sea ice cover with stratified water column and strong bottom current with prolonged sea-ice free season with the intrusion of modified Circumpolar Deep Water and very slow energy bottom current. • First paleoenvironmental study from the LGM to the present in Robertson Bay. • Strong impact of regional ice sheet recession on environmental conditions and productivity. • Multiproxy approach constrained by Ramped Pyrolysis based age model. • The coastal bay area was studied by sediment cores and geophysical data. The findings of BRITICE‐CHRONO Transect 2 through the North Sea Basin and eastern England are reported. We define ice‐sheet marginal oscillation between ~31 and 16 ka, with seven distinctive former ice‐sheet limits (L1–7) constrained by Bayesian statistical analysis. The southernmost limit of the North Sea Lobe is recorded by the Bolders Bank Formation (L1; 25.8–24.6 ka). L2 represents ice‐sheet oscillation and early retreat to the northern edge of the Dogger Bank (23.5–22.2 ka), with the Garret Hill Moraine in north Norfolk recording a significant regional readvance to L3 at 21.5–20.8 ka. Ice‐marginal oscillations at ~26–21 ka resulted in L1, L2 and L3 being partially to totally overprinted. Ice‐dammed lakes related to L1–3, including Lake Humber, are dated at 24.1–22.3 ka. Ice‐sheet oscillation and retreat from L4 to L5 occurred between 19.7 and 17.3 ka, with grounding zone wedges marking an important transition from terrestrial to marine tidewater conditions, triggered by the opening of the Dogger Lake spillway between 19.9 and 17.5 ka. • Glacial iceberg versus deglacial meltwater plume discharge in the Labrador Sea. • Enhanced Irminger Current may have affected ice sheet retreat. • A polynya probably occurred south of Greenland during the Last Glacial Maximum. The study of the history of ice sheet retreat provides important insights into the interaction between ice sheets and oceans, especially under a sustained warming climate. The decay of ice sheets may affect the surrounding ocean environment, and changes in sea surface conditions can, in turn, affect the ice sheet stability. However, interactions between ice sheet dynamics and sea surface characteristics are still not fully understood. Here, we show sedimentary records from the eastern Labrador Sea, proximal to the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) and the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). These records span the last 50 ka, i.e., the last glacial-deglacial-Holocene period. The XRF, biomarker, and planktic/benthic foraminifer data document the collapse of the LIS/iceberg discharge during Heinrich Events (i.e., HE5, HE4, HE2, and HE1) and the occurrence of meltwater plumes from the GrIS and the LIS during the last deglaciation. Such meltwater discharges have caused surface freshening in the Labrador Sea and, consequently, decreased sea surface temperatures and open-water phytoplankton productivity. Enhanced Irminger Current inflow might have caused (sub-)surface warming in the Labrador Sea and triggered the retreat of ice sheets/meltwater discharge. In contrast to relatively low primary production during the glacial period, the Last Glacial Maximum was characterized by increased sea ice algae and phytoplankton production, suggesting the presence of a polynya in front of the southern GrIS. Here we present the first compilation of sediment volumes, sedimentation rates, and chronology of Quaternary sediment packages along the entire marine margin of the Eurasian ice sheets (EurIS; British-Irish, Kara-Barents Sea-Svalbard, and Fennoscandian). This compilation allows for a subdivision of the EurIS development into three phases (2.6-1.5 Ma, 1.5-0.78 Ma, and 0.78-0 Ma). At the start of the Quaternary, sedimentation rates increased, relative to pre-Quaternary rates, by an order of magnitude. This abruptness in rate change excludes tectonic raising of landmasses as the main factor, but more likely reflects climate change through increased glacial erosion. The sediment distribution data suggest that the Kara-Barents Sea-Svalbard Ice Sheet (KBSIS) already was quite large at the beginning of the Quaternary, and well before 1.5 Ma it extended to the shelf edge and coalesced with the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet (FIS), which prior to 1.5 Ma most likely was located near the coast. Large ice streams and intense glacial erosion characterized the KBSIS in the 1.5-0.78 Ma time period, whereas the FIS at that time extended farther out on the continental shelf. After 0.78 Ma, a north-south change in EurIS development occurred. In the FIS and the British-Irish Ice Sheet (BIIS), large ice streams developed and shelf-edge glaciations occurred nearly 1 m.y. later compared to the KBSIS. The FIS and BIIS also repetitively coalesced in the North Sea. A significant drop in sediment input along the KBSIS marine margin, to the lowest Quaternary level, suggests a less erosive KBSIS. High-resolution seismic data from the Sabrina Coast continental shelf, East Antarctica, elucidate the Cenozoic evolution of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. Detailed seismic stratigraphic and facies analysis reveal the Paleogene to earliest Pliocene glacial evolution of the Aurora Basin catchment, including at least 12 glacial expansions across the shelf indicated by erosional surfaces and chaotic acoustic character of strata. Differences in facies composition and seismic architecture reveal several periods of ice-free conditions succeeded by glacial expansions across the shelf. A deep (~100 m), undulating erosional surface suggests the initial appearance of grounded ice on the shelf. Following the initial ice expansion, the region experienced an interval of open-marine to ice-distal conditions, marked by an up to 200-m-thick sequence of stratified sediments. At least three stacked erosional surfaces reveal major cross-shelf glacial expansions of regional glaciers characterized by deep (up to ~120 m) channel systems associated with extensive subglacial meltwater. The seismic character of the sediments below the latest Miocene to earliest Pliocene regional unconformity indicates intervals of glacial retreat interrupted by advances of temperate, meltwater-rich glacial ice from the Aurora Basin catchment. Our results document the Paleogene to late Miocene glacial history of this climatically sensitive region of East Antarctica and provide an important paleoenvironmental context for future scientific drilling to constrain the regional climate and timing of Cenozoic glacial variability. We describe a revised understanding of the extent and dynamics of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet on the continental shelf of northern British Columbia, Canada. During the Local Last Glacial Maximum ice streams occupied two of the three shelf‐crossing troughs in Queen Charlotte Sound (Goose Island Trough and Mitchell's Trough). A 25‐km‐wide outlet glacier – the Hecate Glacier – flowed south in Hecate Strait, parallel to the modern coast. It reached a grounding line at the head of Moresby Trough, beyond which an ice shelf may have extended to the edge of the continental shelf. The southern part of the independent Haida Gwaii Ice Cap formed piedmont lobes dissected by tunnel valleys. An emergent area east of the ice cap corresponds with the 'Hecate Refugium'. Subsequently grounded ice retreated from the shelf troughs. The Hecate Glacier retreated incrementally towards the north. Mainland ice then stabilized along a north–south margin near modern coasts, marked by submarine moraines in the Chatham Sound region and elsewhere. This margin was probably contemporaneous with the margin at Mt. Buxton in the south of the study area, dated at c. 17.6 to 16.6 ka (Darvill et al. 2018). Off southern Haida Gwaii, following a retreat, a glacier margin was established east of Juan Perez Sound, proximal to a sandur plain graded to a water level of −150 m. Proglacial lakes to the north of here were the likely source for an outburst flood that created gravel bedforms and an area of sea‐floor scour. In a final phase, diminished mainland ice was confined to fjords, and retreat inland is marked by a succession of submarine moraines, beginning with a moraine at the Douglas Channel sill. The Ediacaran-Cambrian transition is recognized as a warm period. However, glaciations have been reported in many paleocontinents worldwide during this transition, including the Luoquan glaciation in Northern China. The type of glacier remains unclear, and there are still uncertainties regarding the differences and similarities between the Luoquan glaciation and other Ediacaran glaciations, which restrict global comparison of glaciation characteristics. Research on sedimentary characteristics and succession of eight sections of the Luoquan and Dongpo formations in western Henan Province in the southern North China Craton shows that from north to south, the Luoquan and Dongpo formations show three vertical facies associations spatially, indicating an obvious sedimentary environment evolution of subglacial-periglacial-glaciomarine-shallow marine, namely, from the subglacial lodgement to the periglacial outwash fan and permafrost, then to the proximal glaciomarine grounding-line fan and iceberg rainout to the distal glaciomarine ice-rafted deposits, and finally to the normal shallow sea. The spatial evolution of sedimentary environment indicates that the Luoquan glaciation in western Henan Province was a large ice sheet that extended from land to the sea and was not completely frozen but partially melted during warm periods, and temporary open-water conditions existed. Further comparison shows that although the number, frequency and global characteristics have not yet been determined, the global Ediacaran glaciations also show dynamic evolution characteristics from continental to marine glaciers, which is similar to the evolution mechanism of ice sheet during the snowball Earth, and also not indicative of hard snowball Earth pattern of complete ice cover. • Four facies associations of Luoquan glaciation in western Henan province on the southern margin of NCC are recognized. • The sedimentary evolution of Luoquan glaciation is from subglacial to periglacial, then to glaciomarine and shallow sea. • The Luoquan glaciation is a warm-based ice-sheet that extends from continent into the sea, rather than a mountain glacier. The last glacial period (LGP; ca. 110–10 kyr BP) was marked by the existence of two types of abrupt climatic changes, Dansgaard–Oeschger (DO) and Heinrich (H) events. Although the mechanisms behind these are not fully understood, it is generally accepted that the presence of ice sheets played an important role in their occurrence. While an important effort has been made to investigate the dynamics and evolution of the Laurentide ice sheet (LIS) during this period, the Eurasian ice sheet (EIS) has not received much attention, in particular from a modeling perspective. However, meltwater discharge from this and other ice sheets surrounding the Nordic seas is often implied as a potential cause of ocean instabilities that lead to glacial abrupt climate changes. Thus, a better comprehension of the evolution of the EIS during the LGP is important to understand its role in glacial abrupt climate changes. Here we investigate the response of the EIS to millennial-scale climate variability during the LGP. We use a hybrid, three-dimensional, thermomechanical ice-sheet model that includes ice shelves and ice streams. The model is forced off-line via a novel perturbative approach that, as opposed to conventional methods, clearly differentiates between the spatial patterns of millennial-scale and orbital-scale climate variability. Thus, it provides a more realistic treatment of the forcing at millennial timescales. The effect of both atmospheric and oceanic variations are included. Our results show that the EIS responds with enhanced ice discharge in phase with interstadial warming in the North Atlantic when forced with surface ocean temperatures. Conversely, when subsurface ocean temperatures are used, enhanced ice discharge occurs both during stadials and at the beginning of the interstadials. Separating the atmospheric and oceanic effects demonstrates the major role of the ocean in controlling the dynamics of the EIS on millennial timescales. While the atmospheric forcing alone is only able to produce modest iceberg discharges, warming of the ocean leads to higher rates of iceberg discharges as a result of relatively strong basal melting at the margins of the ice sheet. Our results clearly show the capability of the EIS to react to glacial abrupt climate changes, and highlight the need for stronger constraints on the ice sheet's glacial dynamics and climate–ocean interactions. Reconstructing the advance and retreat of past ice sheets provides important long-term context for recent change(s) and enables us to better understand ice sheet responses to forcing mechanisms and external boundary conditions that regulate grounding line retreat. This study applies various radiocarbon dating techniques, guided by a detailed sedimentological analyses, to reconstruct the glacial history of Anvers-Hugo Trough (AHT), one of the largest bathymetric troughs on the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) shelf. Existing records from AHT indicate that the expanded Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet (APIS) advanced to, or close to, the continental shelf edge during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 23-19 cal kyr BP [ = calibrated kiloyears before present]), with deglaciation of the outer shelf after ∼16.3 cal kyr BP. Our new chronological data show that the APIS had retreated to the middle shelf by ∼15.7 cal kyr BP. Over this 600-year interval, two large grounding-zone wedges (GZW) were deposited across the middle (GZW2) and inner shelf (GZW3), suggesting that their formation occurred on centennial rather than millennial timescales. Expanded sequences of sub-ice shelf sediments occur seaward of the inner GZW3, which suggests that the grounding line remained stationary for a prolonged period over the middle shelf. Grounding-line retreat rates indicate faster retreat across the outer to middle shelf compared to retreat across the middle to inner shelf. We suggest that variable retreat rates relate to the broad-scale morphology of the trough, which is characterised by a relatively smooth, retrograde seabed on the outer to middle shelf and rugged morphology with a locally landward shallowing bed and deep basin on the inner shelf. A slowdown in retreat rate could also have been promoted by convergent ice flow over the inner shelf and the availability of pinning points associated with bathymetric highs around Anvers Island and Hugo Island. • The deglacial history of Anvers-Hugo Trough is revealed by marine geological and geophysical data. • Application of multiple 14C dating methods allows reliable dating of ice sheet retreat. • Grounded ice had retreated to the mid-shelf by ∼15.7 cal kyr BP. • Retreat rates are controlled by the broad-scale morphology of the shelf. Abstract: Paleoglaciology deals with glaciation cycles of the Quaternary Ice Age. It combines the dynamics of present-day ice sheets deduced from glaciology with the history of former ice sheets deduced from glacial geology. Cosmogenic dating now makes a detailed chronology of a cycle possible. Radiocarbon dating has provided a detailed chronology for Termination of the last cycle, but cannot date how the cycle began. Here we identify the central challenge in applying paleoglaciology to Quaternary glaciation cycles in general, and initiation of these cycles in particular. The challenge is the role of thickening sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, possibly becoming thick ice shelves floating over deep Arctic basins and high marine ice sheets grounded on shallow Arctic continental shelves. In that case, an Arctic Ice Sheet existed that was larger and less stable than the Antarctic Ice Sheet is now or in the past. Two approaches to this problem are presented as Part 1 and Part 2. In Part 1, the height of these former ice sheets is linked primarily to the strength of ice-bed coupling, which is deduced from glacial geology. It provides “snapshots” of ice sheets that give ice elevations independent of the past history and largely independent of ice-surface conditions, temperatures and the mass balance in particular. In Part 2, heights of former ice sheets depend on both their past history, particularly initial conditions, and changing surface conditions during the glaciation cycle. This provides a “motion picture” of ice sheets during the full cycle. The challenge is to establish a “mind meld” of these two approaches. They allow new perspectives on paleoglaciology. Knowledge regarding the response of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet to glacial–interglacial climatic cycles in the late Pleistocene is critical to understanding the global climate system and projections of future sea level rise. Here, we observed notable glacial–interglacial cyclicity in magnetic properties, bulk detrital Sr–Nd isotopes, and Fe/Ti ratios over the previous 530 kyr in three well-dated gravity cores from the continental rise offshore of Prydz Bay (East Antarctica). Our results show that Antarctic continental sources with more Ti-rich magnetite, less radiogenic epsilon neodymium (ε Nd), and higher Fe/Ti ratios were predominant during glacials in comparison with interglacials. Specifically, the ε Nd amplitude through MIS 11–5 differs from that in the remainder of the records, which is also expressed in the magnetic coercivity cycles with subdued patterns. Following source identification on the basis of the detrital Sr–Nd distribution, we recognize two main (rock type) sources and infer two types of ice drainage flow pattern ("flank" and "channelized"), which follow different pathways in the Lambert Glacier–Amery Ice Shelf system (LG-AISS). The first follows an eastern path connecting the Ingrid Christensen Coast (flank), while the second follows a central channel via the LG-AISS (channelized) during MIS 11–5. Regular dynamics on glacial–interglacial timescales, manifested by changes in magnetic coercivity, are closely related to the modeled Antarctic ice volume and ice sheet movement, in which the second channelized pathway during MIS 11–5 corresponds to a 340-kyr-long episode with contiguous warmer-than-present Antarctic interglacials (MIS 11, 9, 7, and 5). Our records thus provide the clearest evidence so far of variable patterns of ice sheet dynamics during the late Pleistocene in the Prydz Bay sector of East Antarctica, which coincided with similar variation of ice drainage during the late Miocene–early Pliocene at around 1.13 Ma (ODP188). Similar ice drainage changes in these two periods imply that major ice flow reconfiguration can be triggered repeatedly by abrupt changes from a stable warm period to a cold one. The presented data not only reveal glacial–interglacial cyclicity in ice sheet advance and retreat in the meridional direction, but also implicate latitudinal adjustment (lateral) within a thin elongated drainage basin of the LG-AISS. • Ti-rich and Ti-poor magnetite dominate glacial and interglacial terrigenous material respectively eroded by ice sheet. • Detrital Sr/Nd show two end members from Archean―paleoproterozoic and Meso-Neoproterozoic outcrops from Prydz Bay sector. • Amplitude changes of ε Nd during MIS 11―MIS 5 produce three-stage shifts in terrigenous sources and ice sheet patterns. • "Channel" and "flank" erosion patterns are postulated respectively for MIS 11―MIS 5 and the remainder the last 530 kyr. • The long period of warmth during MIS 11―MIS 5 might correspond to the long eccentricity controlled Antarctic ice volume. During the Pleistocene glaciations, Arctic ice sheets on western Eurasia, Greenland and North America terminated at their continental margins. In contrast, the exposed continental shelves in the Beringian region of Siberia are thought to have been covered by a tundra landscape. Evidence of grounded ice on seafloor ridges and plateaux off the coast of the Beringian margin, at depths of up to 1,000 m, have generally been attributed to ice shelves or giant icebergs that spread oceanwards during glacial maxima. Here we identify marine glaciogenic landforms visible in seismic profiles and detailed bathymetric maps along the East Siberian continental margin. We interpret these features, which occur in present water depths of up to 1,200 m, as traces from grounding events of ice sheets and ice shelves. We conclude that the Siberian Shelf edge and parts of the Arctic Ocean were covered by ice sheets of about 1 km in thickness during several Pleistocene glaciations before the most recent glacial period, which must have had a significant influence on albedo and oceanic and atmospheric circulation. Considerable uncertainty surrounds the extent and timing of the advance and retreat of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) on the continental shelf bordering Baffin Bay during the last glacial cycle. Here we use marine geophysical and geological data to show that fast-flowing ice sheet outlets, including the ancestral Jakobshavn Isbræ, expanded several hundred kilometers to the shelf edge during the last glaciation ca. 20 ka. Retreat of these outlets was asynchronous. Initial retreat from the shelf edge was underway by 14,880 calibrated (cal) yr B.P. in Uummannaq trough. Radiocarbon dates from the adjacent Disko trough and adjoining trough-mouth fan imply later deglaciation of Jakobshavn Isbræ, and, significantly, an extensive readvance and rapid retreat of this outlet during the Younger Dryas stadial (YD). This is notable because it is the first evidence of a major advance of the GIS during the YD on the West Greenland shelf, although the short duration suggests that it may have been out of phase with YD temperatures. Abstract: The Antarctic Peninsula region is currently undergoing rapid environmental change, resulting in the thinning, acceleration and recession of glaciers and the sequential collapse of ice shelves. It is important to view these changes in the context of long-term palaeoenvironmental complexity and to understand the key processes controlling ice sheet growth and recession. In addition, numerical ice sheet models require detailed geological data for tuning and testing. Therefore, this paper systematically and holistically reviews published geological evidence for Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet variability for each key locality throughout the Cenozoic, and brings together the prevailing consensus of the extent, character and behaviour of the glaciations of the Antarctic Peninsula region. Major contributions include a downloadable database of 186 terrestrial and marine calibrated dates; an original reconstruction of the LGM ice sheet; and a new series of isochrones detailing ice sheet retreat following the LGM. Glaciation of Antarctica was initiated around the Eocene/Oligocene transition in East Antarctica. Palaeogene records of Antarctic Peninsula glaciation are primarily restricted to King George Island, where glacigenic sediments provide a record of early East Antarctic glaciations, but with modification of far-travelled erratics by local South Shetland Island ice caps. Evidence for Neogene glaciation is derived primarily from King George Island and James Ross Island, where glaciovolcanic strata indicate that ice thicknesses reached 500–850 m during glacials. This suggests that the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet draped, rather than drowned, the topography. Marine geophysical investigations indicate multiple ice sheet advances during this time. Seismic profiling of continental shelf-slope deposits indicates up to ten large advances of the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet during the Early Pleistocene, when the ice sheet was dominated by 40 kyr cycles. Glacials became more pronounced, reaching the continental shelf edge, and of longer duration during the Middle Pleistocene. During the Late Pleistocene, repeated glacials reached the shelf edge, but ice shelves inhibited iceberg rafting. The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) occurred at 18 ka BP, after which transitional glaciomarine sediments on the continental shelf indicate ice-sheet retreat. The continental shelf contains large bathymetric troughs, which were repeatedly occupied by large ice streams during Pleistocene glaciations. Retreat after the LGM was episodic in the Weddell Sea, with multiple readvances and changes in ice-flow direction, but rapid in the Bellingshausen Sea. The late Holocene Epoch was characterised by repeated fluctuations in palaeoenvironmental conditions, with associated glacial readvances. Abstract: Multibeam swath bathymetry and backscatter data collected as part of the Irish National Seabed Survey and Integrated Mapping for the Sustainable Development of Ireland''s Marine Resource programmes is used to investigate the glacial geomorphology of the Malin Shelf. The data provides direct evidence that the former British Irish Ice Sheet was grounded as far out as the shelf break in this sector on more than one occasion. Drumlins on the outer shelf indicate the region was a zone of confluence where ice flowing onto the shelf from northwest Ireland converged with ice flowing across the shelf from western Scotland. Ice berg furrows located on the outer shelf record ice sheet break up by a calving event that may have been triggered by rising sea levels and northwest–southeast aligned moraines indicate the ice retreated north-eastwards across the shelf towards Scotland. The absence of direct dating control from moraines on the Malin Shelf precludes a definitive assessment of the timing of ice sheet events. However, consideration of the stratigraphic relationship of the glacial landforms on the shelf with age constrained ice sheet events in the wider region indicates that the former British Irish Ice Sheet reached the outer shelf in this region on at least two occasions during the last cold stage. Moraines that have been overprinted by drumlins may possibly belong to an early phase of glaciation that occurred c 45ka B. This was subsequently followed by another episode of shelf extensive glaciation where converging ice flow from northwest Ireland and western Scotland reached the shelf break during the LGM that subsequently retreated from the shelf edge around 23ka BP. The repeated proximity of West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) ice to the eastern Ross Sea continental shelf break during past ice age cycles has been inferred to directly influence sedimentary processes occurring on the continental slope, such as turbidity current and debris flow activity; thus, the records of these processes can be used to study the past history of the WAIS. Ross Sea slope sediments may additionally provide an archive on the history and interplay of density-driven or geostrophic oceanic bottom currents with ice-sheet-driven depositional mechanisms. We investigate the upper 121 m of Hole U1525A, collected during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 374 in 2018. Hole U1525A is located on the southwestern external levee of the Hillary Canyon (Ross Sea, Antarctica) and the depositional lobe of the nearby trough-mouth fan. Using core descriptions, grain size analysis, and physical properties datasets, we develop a lithofacies scheme that allows construction of a detailed depositional model and environmental history of past ice sheet-ocean interactions at the eastern Ross Sea continental shelf break/slope since ~2.4 Ma. The earliest Pleistocene interval (~2.4- ~ 1.4 Ma) represents a hemipelagic environment dominated by ice-rafting and reworking/deposition by relatively persistent bottom current activity. Finely interlaminated silty muds with ice-rafted debris (IRD) layers are interpreted as contourites. Between ~1.4 and ~0.8 Ma, geostrophic bottom current activity was weaker and turbiditic processes more common, likely related to the increased proximity of grounded ice at the shelf edge. Silty, normally-graded laminations with sharp bases may be the result of flow-stripped turbidity currents overbanking the canyon levee during periods when ice was grounded at or proximal to the shelf edge. A sandy, IRD- and foraminifera-bearing interval dated to ~1.18 Ma potentially reflects warmer oceanographic conditions and a period of stronger Antarctic Slope Current flow. This may have enhanced upwelling of warm Circumpolar Deep Water onto the shelf, leading to large-scale glacial retreat at that time. The thickest interval of turbidite interlamination was deposited after ~1 Ma, following the onset of the Mid-Pleistocene Transition, interpreted as a time when most ice sheets grew and glacial periods were longer and more extreme. Sedimentation after ~0.8 Ma was dominated by glacigenic debris flow deposition, as the trough mouth fan that dominates the eastern Ross Sea continental slope prograded and expanded over the site. During the last glacial period, the western sea area of Estonia in the northern Baltic Sea was covered by the Fennoscandian continental ice sheet. High-resolution multibeam bathymetric images of the seafloor reveal widespread linear and curved depressions, interpreted as iceberg scours (ploughmarks) that were produced by ploughing and grounding icebergs during and soon after the final ice retreat from the area. Two main populations (A and B) of scours are identified, formed either on top of the acoustic substratum (bedrock or coarse-grained glacial deposits) or on top of the superimposed glaciolacustrine and post-glacial sediments that are exposed on the seafloor. Both populations have similar characteristics, being on average 780 m long, 54 m wide and 1.6 m deep. Most of the scours are linear, with an average NE-SW orientation for Population A, and an average ENE-WSW orientation for Population B. The scour patterns indicate a partially grounded ice sheet in the shallower parts of the study area. Reconstructing past ice-sheet surface changes is key to testing and improving ice-sheet models. Data constraining the past behaviour of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet are sparse, limiting our understanding of its response to past, present and future climate change. Here, we report the first cosmogenic multi-nuclide (10Be, 26Al, 36Cl) data from bedrock and erratics on nunataks along the Jutulstraumen and Penck Trough ice streams in western Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. Spanning elevations between 741 and 2394 m above sea level, the samples have apparent exposure ages between 2 ka and 5 Ma. The highest-elevation bedrock sample indicates (near-) continuous minimum exposure since the Pliocene, with a low apparent erosion rate of 0.15 ± 0.03 m Ma−1, which is similar to results from eastern Dronning Maud Land. In contrast to studies in eastern Dronning Maud Land, however, our data show clear indications of a thicker-than-present ice sheet within the last glacial cycle, with a thinning of ∼35–120 m during the Holocene (∼2–11 ka). Difficulties in separating suitable amounts of quartz from the often quartz-poor rock-types in the area, and cosmogenic nuclides inherited from exposure prior to the last deglaciation, prevented robust thinning estimates from elevational profiles. Cryospheric events in the Arctic Ocean have been largely studied through the imprints of ice sheets, ice shelves and icebergs in the seafloor morphology and sediment stratigraphy. Subglacial morphologies have been identified in the shallowest regions of the Arctic Ocean, up to 1200 m water depth, revealing the extent and dynamics of Arctic ice sheets during the last glacial periods. However, less attention has been given to sedimentary features imaged in the vicinity of the ice-grounded areas. Detailed interpretation of the sparse available swath bathymetry and sub-bottom profiles from the Lomonosov Ridge and the Amundsen Basin shows the occurrence of mass transport deposits (MTDs) and sediment waves in the central Arctic Ocean. The waxing and waning ice sheets and shelves in the Arctic Ocean have influenced the distribution of MTDs in the vicinity of grounding-ice areas, i.e. along the crest of Lomonosov Ridge. Due to the potential of Arctic sediments to hold gas hydrates, their destabilization should not be ruled out as trigger for sediment instability. Sediment waves formed by the interaction of internal waves that propagate along water mass interfaces with the bathymetric barrier of Lomonosov Ridge. This work describes the distribution and formation mechanisms of MTDs and sediment waves in the central Arctic Ocean in relation to grounding ice and internal waves between water masses, respectively. The Amundsen Sea sector of the Antarctic ice sheet presently dominates the contribution from Antarctica to sea level rise. Several large ice streams that currently drain the sector have experienced rapid flow acceleration, grounding line retreat and thinning during the past few decades. However, little is known of their longer-term – millennial-scale – retreat history, despite the reliance of several ice sheet and glacial-isostatic adjustment models on such data for improving sea level prediction from this critical region. This study investigates the timing and extent of surface lowering of one of those ice streams, Pope Glacier, since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), using glacial-geological evidence for former ice cover. We present a new deglacial chronology for the glacier, derived from surface exposure dating of glacially-deposited cobbles and ice-scoured bedrock from Mount Murphy and its surrounding peaks. Cosmogenic 10Be exposure ages from 44 erratic cobbles and 5 bedrock samples, and in situ 14C exposure ages from one erratic and 8 bedrock samples are predominantly in the range 5.5-16 ka. Although 10Be inheritance from prior exposure is prevalent in some erratics and probably all bedrock samples, none of the ages pre-date the LGM. From these results we infer that the surface of Pope Glacier lowered by 560 m during the early- to mid-Holocene (9-6 ka), at an average rate of 0.13 ± 0.09/0.04 m yr−1. The lowering coincided with a period of enhanced upwelling of warm Circumpolar Deep Water onto the continental shelf in the region. A reduction in buttressing − facilitated by such upwelling − by an ice shelf that is thought to have spanned the embayment until 10.6 cal kyr BP could have triggered simultaneous early Holocene thinning of Pope Glacier and glaciers elsewhere in the Amundsen Sea Embayment. During the last glacial cycle, the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) has passed from an interglacial state, warmer than present day (PD), slowly into a glacial state, known as the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and then deglaciated on a faster timescale into the Holocene and PD conditions. Although we have proxy data of the size and extent of the ice sheet for the LGM, neither the oceanic temperatures of the Southern Ocean, nor the precipitation fields are well constrained. Also the time evolution of the ice volume during the glacial cycle is not fully clear. It is well assumed that it follows a sawtooth pattern, but from a modelling perspective different combinations of parameters and boundary conditions can give rise to plausible Antarctic configurations. Here we aim to study the uncertainty in AIS evolution resulting from ice-sheet model parameters, as well as the imposed climatic fields used as forcing. For this purpose we use the three-dimensional thermomechanical hybrid ice-sheet-shelf model Yelmo, which treats ice dynamics via the shallow-ce and shallow-shelf approximations, and accounts for basal melt below ice shelves and a subgrid parameterisation for treatment of the grounding line. We will focus on the effect of different climatic fields, such as precipitation and oceanic temperatures, as well as the effect of different enhancement factors and basal drag choices for reproducing consistent Antarctic configurations in the LGM and the PD. Improving our understanding of the effect of different ice-dynamics configurations in various climatic scenarios will help to better understand the past evolution of the AIS and potentially constrain its future evolution as well. Improved understanding of the dynamics, extent and palaeogeography of retreating ice sheets can be accomplished by combining ice sheet modelling with the wealth of evidence they leave behind. Large volumes of constraining data exist and numerical models which can simulate entire glaciations are readily available. However, attempts to directly compare and connect empirically-based reconstructions with model-based simulations have been surprisingly rare, perhaps due to the complexity of combining the two fields and the abundance of approaches that could be taken. Here, we focus on a new method of directing ice sheet model simulations to match empirically reconstructed ice extents through time. Empirical evidence recording the behaviour of the last British-Irish Ice Sheet has been enhanced by the BRITICE-CHRONO consortium of researchers. This has been a six-year project to constrain the timing of retreat by a systematic dating programme focused on the marine-to-terrestrial transition. From two research cruises (18,000 km of geophysical data and 377 vibro- and piston cores), along with numerous investigations of stratigraphic sections on land we collected samples for dating from 914 sites from which 639 new geochronometric ages have been derived (336 radiocarbon, 156 luminescence and 157 cosmogenic). Organised into eight key transects from the shelf break to tens of kilometers onshore the pattern and pace of retreat has been compiled into an ice sheet wide reconstruction of ice extent at one thousand year times steps. We then used numerical models either forced or nudged to comply with these ice extents to yield simulations of ice sheet change thereby incorporating ice sheet physics, grounding lines, ice shelves, ice streams, and glacio isostatic adjustment and sea level. The last glacial period (LGP; ca.110-10 ka BP) was marked by the existence of abrupt climatic changes on millennial time scales. Ice sheets are thought to play an important role in their occurrence or, at least, to have responded to these climate changes. While a considerable effort has been made to investigate the dynamics and evolution of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) during this period, the Eurasian Ice Sheet (EIS) has received less attention, particularly from a modeling perspective. Here we focus on the response of the EIS by using a hybrid, three-dimensional, thermomechanical ice-sheet model that includes ice shelves and ice streams. The model is forced offline including the effects of both atmospheric and oceanic variations. Our results show that the EIS responds with enhanced ice discharge in phase with interstadial warming in the North Atlantic when forced with surface ocean temperatures. Conversely, when subsurface ocean temperatures are used, an increase in ice discharge is found both during stadials and at the beginning of the interstadials. Separating the atmospheric and oceanic effects demonstrates the major role of the ocean in controlling the dynamics of the EIS on millennial time scales. While the atmospheric forcing alone is only able to produce modest iceberg discharges, warming of the ocean leads to higher rates of iceberg discharges and major grounding line reorganizations. Our results highlight the need for stronger constraints on the local North Atlantic behavior in order to improve our understanding of the ice sheet's glacial dynamics and its implication in the occurrence of millennial-scale climate variability.
