Drainage networks play an essential role in mitigating urban flooding, which, nevertheless, are prone to suffer sediment deposits. To date, however, the effects of sediments in drainage networks on urban flooding remain poorly understood. Here an integrated model is proposed for urban flooding. It is composed of a hydrological module for surface runoff integrated with a one-dimensional hydro-sediment-morphodynamic module for coupled open-channel or pressurized flow and sediment transport in drainage networks. The governing equations are solved synchronously using a well-balanced finite volume method. The model is tested against two laboratory cases involving mixed flow and sediment transport in pipes, and the results agree well with observed data. A new residential area with virtually pervious surface and an established urban area with essentially impervious surfaces are studied using the present model to unravel how sediments in drainage networks affect urban flooding under different extreme rainfall and sediment scenarios. The results reveal that sediments alter the discharge hydrographs in the drainage networks to distinct extents under different storm return periods. As far as the present computational cases are concerned, when a third of the pipe diameter is occupied by sediment deposits, the peak pipeline flow discharge decreases by up to 25 %. Accordingly, the surface inundation depth increases by up to 18 %, and the inundation area expands by up to 12 %, characterizing a considerably higher flooding risk. Wildfire substantially alters aquatic ecosystems by inducing moderate to catastrophic physical and chemical changes. However, the relations of environmental and watershed variables that drive those effects are complex. We present a Driver‐Factor‐Stressor‐Effect (DFSE) conceptual framework to assess the current state of the science related to post‐wildfire water‐quality. We reviewed 64 peer‐reviewed papers using the DFSE framework to identify drivers, factors, stressors, and effects associated with each study. A total of five drivers were identified and ranked according to their frequency of occurrence in the literature: atmospheric processes > fire characteristics > ecologic processes and characteristics > land surface characteristics > soil characteristics. Commonly reported stressors include increased nutrients, runoff, and sediment transport. Furthermore, although several different factors have been used at least once to explain water‐quality effects, relatively few factors outside of precipitation and fire characteristics are frequently studied. We identified several gaps indicating the need for long‐term monitoring, multi‐factor studies, consideration of organic contaminants, consideration of groundwater, and inclusion of soil characteristics. This assessment expands on other reviews and meta‐analyses by exploring causal linkages between influential variables and overall effects in post‐wildfire watersheds. Information gathered from our assessment and the framework itself can be used to inform future monitoring plans and as a guide for modeling efforts focused on better understanding specific processes or to mitigate potential risks of post‐wildfire water quality. However, the environmental and watershed factors that drive post‐wildfire water quality are not well understood. We conducted a scoping review of peer‐reviewed publications to assess the current state of the science and identify knowledge gaps. Using the data gathered from the review, we developed a conceptual framework to identify factors that most frequently explain post‐wildfire impacts, the resulting stressors (i.e., changes in the system), and the effects associated with the observed stressors. Precipitation and burn severity are most frequently related to post‐wildfire impacts. Factors such as soil characteristics are studied relatively infrequently. Effects include impaired water quality, increased drinking water treatment, and increased streamflow. Our analysis identified several gaps that can be filled by long‐term monitoring, conducting studies in geographic regions affected by wildfire but where little data exists, expanding current observations to better understand shifts in baseflow contributions, and expanding chemical analyses to include organic contaminants. Measuring river response to dam removal affords a rare, important opportunity to study fluvial response to sediment pulses on a large field scale. We present a before–after/control–impact study of the Carmel River, California, measuring fluvial geomorphic and grain-size evolution over 8 years, six of which postdated removal of a 32 m-high dam (one of the largest dams removed worldwide) and included 11 flow events exceeding the 2-year flood magnitude. We find that the reservoir-sediment pulse following dam removal was relatively small (97 000 ± 24 000 t over 4 years), owing to deliberate reservoir-sediment stabilization. Scaled to the size of the Carmel River watershed and compared against long-term bedrock denudation rates, the post-dam-removal sediment release was slightly less than the annualized long-term sediment export from this basin. New sediment transited >30 km to the river mouth in less than 2 years, assisted by floods 2 and 4 years after dam removal. The sediment pulse fined the downstream riverbed while causing mostly low-magnitude bed-elevation changes: commonly 0.5 to 1 m or smaller, occurring as discontinuous sediment patches or interstitial deposits, aside from the filling and subsequent partial scour of deep pools. There was no major geomorphic reset downstream from the dam site. Geomorphic changes were driven almost entirely by flow rather than by the modest increase in sediment supply, in contrast to recent examples from other large dam removals. The relatively minor disturbance caused by dam removal on the Carmel River is likely analogous to many future dam removals: a relatively small sediment pulse after deliberate limitation of reservoir-sediment erosion, and with an upstream dam remaining in place. Thus, a large dam removal need not lead to major downstream impacts.

Silt-rich meltwater plume deposits (MPDs) analyzed from marine sediment cores have elucidated relationships that are clearly connected, yet difficult to constrain, between subglacial hydrology, ice-marginal landforms, and grounding-zone retreat patterns for several glacial catchments. Few attempts have been made to infer details of subglacial hydrology, such as flow regime, geometry of drainage pathways, and mode(s) of sediment transport through time, from grain-scale characteristics of MPDs. Using sediment samples from MPD, till, and grounding-zone proximal diamicton collected offshore of six modern and relict glacial catchments in both hemispheres, we examine grain shape distributions and microtextures (collectively, grain micromorphology) of the silt fraction to explore whether grains are measurably altered from their subglacial sources via meltwater action. We find that 75 % of all imaged grains (n = 9400) can be described by 25 % of the full range of measured shape morphometrics, indicating grain shape homogenization through widespread and efficient abrasive processes in subglacial environments. Although silt grains from MPDs exhibit edge rounding more often than silt grains from tills, grain surface textures indicative of fluvial transport (e.g., v-shaped percussions) occur in only a modest number of grains. Furthermore, MPD grain surfaces retain several textures consistent with transport beneath glacial ice (e.g., straight or arcuate steps, (sub)linear fractures) in comparable abundances to till grains. Significant grain shape alteration in MPDs compared to their till sources is observed in sediments from glacial regions where (1) high-magnitude, potentially catastrophic meltwater drainage events are inferred from marine sediment records and (2) submarine landforms suggest supraglacial melt contributed to the subglacial hydrological budget. This implies that quantifiable grain shape alteration in MPDs could reflect a combination of high-energy flow of subglacial meltwater, persistent sediment entrainment, and/or long sediment transport distances through subglacial drainage pathways. Integrating grain micromorphology into analysis of MPDs in site-specific studies could therefore aid in distinguishing periods of persistent, well-connected subglacial discharge from periods of sluggish or disorganized drainage. In the wider context of deglacial marine sedimentary and bathymetric records, a grain micromorphological approach may bolster our ability to characterize ice response to subglacial meltwater transmission through time. This work additionally demonstrates that glacial and fluvial surface textures are retained on silt-sized quartz grains in adequate amounts for microtexture analysis, which has heretofore been conducted exclusively on the sand fraction. Forest roadside ditch lines capture and redirect road runoff and typically have erosion control treatments installed therein. Existing methods used to determine the effectiveness of roadside ditch line erosion control treatments estimate fixed fractional reductions in sediment yield. However, fixed fractional reductions do not describe dependence on any measurable physical property of treatment, climate, and the environment. Here, we use additional flow roughness induced by erosion control treatments as a metric that can be used as the basis of estimating treatment effectiveness in varying contexts. We investigate its utility in small‐scale field experiments in western Washington. We measured the physical characteristics of each ditch (e.g., shape, soil texture, and slope) and flow velocities and sediment concentrations for each treatment under multiple experimental discharges. We then used the concept of shear stress partitioning to relate sediment yield from the ditch line erosion treatments to grain shear stress, which is a function of flow roughness (Manning's n) of the respective treatment. We found that (1) a given erosion control treatment produced consistent Manning's n values across multiple replications and sites, with a bare ditch (no treatment) yielding the lowest roughness (n = 0.05) and a densely wattled ditch yielding the highest roughness (n = 0.75); (2) sediment load and calculated grain shear stress data yielded a single positive relationship when data from each experiment were combined, which suggests the effect of additional roughness on grain shear stress is a main driver in the reduction of ditch line sediment load; and (3) in our dataset, fractional erosion reduction had a variable and nonlinear sensitivity to low flow rates (99% of observed flows) for lower roughnesses. Our results demonstrate how additional flow roughness can be used as a general metric to help evaluate the effectiveness of ditch line erosion control treatments for a variety of physical conditions. A quantitative understanding of how sediment discharge from subglacial fluvial systems varies in response to glacio-hydrological conditions is essential for understanding marine systems around Greenland and Antarctica and for interpreting sedimentary records of cryosphere evolution. Here we develop a graph based approach, GraphSSeT, to model subglacial fluvial sedimentary transport using subglacial hydrology model outputs as forcing. GraphSSeT includes glacial erosion of bedrock and a dynamic sediment model with exchange between the active transport system and a basal sediment layer. Sediment transport considers transport-limited and supply-limited regimes and includes stochastically-evolving grain size, network scale flow management and tracking of detrital provenance. GraphSSeT satisfies volume balance and sediment velocity and transport capacity constraints on flow. GraphSSeT is demonstrated for synthetic scenarios that probe the impact of variations in hydrological, geological and glaciological characteristics on sediment transport over multi-diurnal to seasonal timeframes. For steady-state hydrology scenarios on seasonal timescales we find a primary control from the scale and organisation of the channelised hydrological flow network. The development of grain size dependant selective transport is identified as the major secondary control. Non-steady-state hydrology is tested on multi-diurnal timescales, for which sediment discharge scales with peak water input leading to increased sediment discharge compared to steady state. With increasing application of subglacial hydrology models, GraphSSeT extends this capacity to define quantitatively the volume, grain size distribution and detrital characteristics of sediment discharge, and enables a stronger connection of models of the glacio-hydrological system with constraints from the sediment record and impacts on marine systems. The current study focused on investigating the effectiveness of a flexible structural approach for mitigating local scour along longitudinal walls in rivers with well-levelled granular beds. To carry out this study, a hydraulic channel was used as the experimental setup. The experiment aimed to evaluate the influence of several key parameters, including slope (ranging from 1 % to 2.5 %), flow rate (set at 0.017 m3/s and 0.030 m3/s) and width of the flexible structure (which was varied at 0.08, 0.12, and 0.15 m). The results of this study are remarkable and have important implications for river engineering and erosion control. The 0.15 m flexible system exhibited a remarkable ability to decrease scouring, especially under conditions of high flows and steeper slopes. In such scenarios, the flexible structure demonstrated efficiencies exceeding 80 %, signifying a substantial reduction in local scour. These findings are important because they suggest that the flexible structural approach can be an effective solution for mitigating scour in rivers with well-levelled granular beds.

In this study, a field experiment was conducted to examine the retention efficiencies of vegetative filter strips (VFS) on agricultural nonpoint source pollutants. Furthermore, the numerical model VFSMOD was used to predict the VFS performance and linked to a simplified nitrogen transport algorithm. The results indicated that the long filter, low grass spacing, low initial soil water content, and low inflow rate had high VFS retention efficiencies for surface runoff, sediment, and N. However, shallow water table depths (> 1.8 m) had little influence on VFS retention efficiencies, suggesting that shallow WTD (> 1.8 m) need not be considered when constructing VFS. The retention efficiencies varied greatly from 16.55%, 21.15%, 24.70%, 14.57%, 21.86%, and 27.70% to 81.51%, 87.58%, 88.47%, 87.56%, 82.97%, and 89.95% for surface runoff, sediment, TN, NH4+, NO3−, and PN, respectively. The VFSMOD can predict hydrology and sediment transport well for the experimental events with peak outflow rate from VFS greater than 0.0004 m3/s. The good VFSMOD predictions in surface runoff (Ceff = 0.985 for TRF, Ceff = 0.969 for RDR) and sediment (Ceff = 0.998 for MSF, Ceff = 0.960 for SDR) also resulted in good predictions of N (Ceff = 0.913 for MDN). Overall, our study demonstrated that VFSMOD is a useful tool in formulating management schemes for retaining nonpoint source pollutants using VFS, provided local meteorology, rainfall intensity, agricultural fertilization policies, and other influencing factors are considered. This study focuses on the suspended sediment delivery of 17 rivers and streams of various sizes to the sea over a wide geographical area covering most of the Greek peninsula, utilizing two Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products. Equal-area polygons ("plume" polygons), were delineated at the mouths of each selected river. These polygons were utilized to estimate the suspended sediment load of each river through the application of suspended sediment indices, ratios, and masks. To achieve this, 669 Level 1B MODIS images (MOD02) and their corresponding MODIS cloud products (MOD35) were downloaded and processed for a 10-water-year period (2004–2014). During this period of 669 days, there were 58 flood events (episodes) ranging in duration from 5 to 45 days. Relative atmospheric correction was applied to the images based on four selected bright invariant areas (PIFs) scattered along mainland Greece. The second product used in this study was MOD09Q1, an atmospherically corrected 8-day composite processed for the entire record period (2000–2019). Suspended sediment indices, ratios, and masks were developed using all three visible channels and near-infrared (NIR) for the MOD02 dataset, while only Red and Near-InfraRed (NIR) channels were available from the MOD09Q dataset. The resulting rankings from the remote sensing analysis were compared with the predictions of soil loss models, and the outcomes were largely consistent. While the remote sensing results can be considered as a type of experimental data or measurements, they come with inherent limitations. These include infrequent access to cloud-free data on stormy days, the influence of wind and currents, and the potential impact of dust storms originating from Africa, among others. On the other hand, soil loss models are sensitive to the parameter values used, and in some cases, the uncertainties are significant. Hence, the ranking derived from remote sensing can serve as a calibration of the models, particularly for the BQART model, which provides information on the catchment's sink capacity. An index of "sediment productivity per square kilometer and mm of rainfall" was developed. In this research, the SWAT+ model was employed to elucidate hydrological dynamics within the Beas Basin. The primary objectives encompassed the calibration of the SWAT model for accurate water balance quantification, annual simulation of salient hydrological components, and a decadal analysis of trends in fluvial discharge and sediment transport. The methodology encompasses simulating hydrological data with the SWAT+ model, followed by calibration and validation using flow data from Larji and Mahadev hydroelectric plants. The model's efficacy in depicting streamflow and other hydrological components is corroborated by statistical measures such as the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency and PBIAS. The water balance analysis delivers insights into the basin's hydrological characteristics, including surface flow, water yield, and evapotranspiration. The temporal analysis exposes intricate seasonal and interannual variability in flow and sediment discharge, while spatial distribution highlights heterogeneity across the basin. These findings have practical implications for water resource management, including optimizing water allocation, hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, and environmental concerns. Limitations, such as data quality and model simplifications, are acknowledged, and future data collection and observations are recommended for improved model performance. In essence, these researches enhance understanding of the Beas Basin's hydrology, setting a course for future investigations to integrate more data sources, refine model parameters, and consider climate and land-use changes for a richer comprehension of the basin's hydrological dynamics. The purpose of this paper is to describe the internal structure and composition of recently discovered subglacial landforms called "murtoos" in order to interpret their formative processes and depositional environment. So far, murtoos have only been reported from Finland and Sweden, but they probably exist in all areas covered by past ice sheets. Murtoos mainly occur in fields along subglacial meltwater routes or corridors in close relation to eskers and ribbed moraine tracts. Murtoos were excavated perpendicular to the long axes of the triangular murtoo heads in six locations. Murtoos were found to be composed of silt/clay‐poor, sandy and gravelly diamictons interbedded with sorted sediments, and are suggested to be produced by pulsed, highly sediment‐concentrated flows during weak glaciotectonic deformation, indicating effective pressure close to zero. Murtoos can be divided into three main depositional units: 1) the core, 2) the murtoo body and 3) the murtoo mantle. The initial deposition of murtoos took place in a network of low canals and conduits or cavities with fluctuating stream flow likely over 50 km from the ice margin. Murtoos reveal an increasing influence of subglacial meltwater flow in rapidly widening broad and low conduits with increasing sediment transport over short distances. The results of this work suggest that murtoos were formed time‐transgressively over yearly meltwater cycles in a semi‐distributed drainage system not recognised before, in which was high‐pressure porewater conditions with rapid mobilisation of subglacial saturated sediments, a critical factor in the development of semi‐efficient drainage. Murtoos are suggested as missing element between distributed and channelised drainage systems not included in current glaciohydrological models or even in the theoretical basis of glacial hydrology. Landform evolution modelling (LEM) provides an avenue for simulating how a landscape may evolve over extended time periods of thousands of years. CAESAR-Lisflood LEM which includes a hydrologic model (TOPMODEL) and a hydraulic model (Lisflood) can be used to assess the proposed final landform morphology of a mine site by simulating how the mine landform and the landscape would evolve over a 1000-year period. The accuracy of future simulations depends on the calibration and validation of the model to past and present events. Calibration and validation of the model involve finding a combination of parameters of the model which when applied and simulated gives model outputs similar to those observed for the real site scenario for corresponding input data. Calibrating the sediment output of the CAESAR-Lisflood model at the catchment level and using it for studying the equilibrium conditions of the landform is an area that has yet to be explored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to calibrate the CAESAR-Lisflood model and then validate it. To achieve this, the model was run for a rainfall event with a set of parameters, plus discharge and sediment data for the input point of the catchment, to analyse how similar the model output would behave when compared with the discharge and sediment data for the output point of the catchment. The model parameters were then adjusted until the model closely approximated the real site values of the catchment. The model was then validated by running it for a different set of events and checking that the model gave similar results to the real site values. The outcomes demonstrated that while the model can be calibrated to a greater extent for hydrology (discharge output) throughout the year, sediment output calibration may be slightly improved via the ability to change parameters to take into account the seasonal vegetation growth during the start and end of the wet season. This study is important for designing and testing post-mining rehabilitated landscape systems that assess hydrology and sediment movement in seasonal biomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrological connectivity plays a major role in solving water resource and eco-environmental problems. However, this phenomenon has not been afforded the attention it deserves. The detailed analysis of connectivity in river systems could provide considerable insight into the structural and functional attributes of riverine landscapes. The current study used a graph theory approach and associated connectivity indicators to explore the characteristics and evolution of river systems and hydrological connectivity in a large catchment (Poyang Lake, China). The results revealed that the structure of the river system tended to be complex during 1990–2020, characterized by a dynamic evolution of tributaries in certain northern areas. Both river density and complexity exhibited an increasing trend by up to 15%, with the change rate after 2000 approximately twice as high as that of the preceding period. Overall, human activities across the catchment were more likely to play a key role in leading to significant changes in the quantity, morphometric, and structural characteristics of the river system. Additionally, the functional connectivity analysis indicated that the index of connectivity (IC) in the downstream catchment was stronger than that of the upstream vegetation areas, suggesting a strong contribution to the runoff sediment transport (r = 0.6–0.7). This study highlights the spatial and temporal evolution of both structural and functional connectivity in the large Poyang Lake catchment. The findings of this work will benefit future water resource management and applications by providing a strategy for protecting the surface hydrology and mass transport of large river basins under climate and land use changes. In order to find the main driving factors of the variation of water and sediment in the typical tributaries of Ningxia section of Yellow River, based on the measured hydrological data at Quanyanshan station of Qingshui river, Mingshazhou station of Hongliugou river and Guojiaqiao station of Kushui river, the variation trend of water and sediment, and mutation year of the typical watershed were analyzed by the sliding average method, Mann-Kendall mutation test and double accumulation curve method; the driving factors of the variation of water and sediment were analyzed by cumulative slope method, hydrology method, and soil and water conservation method. The results show that ① from 1989 to 2019, the variation of water and sediment in Qingshui river, Hongliugou river and Kushui river basins all show a decreasing trend; the variation of sediment transport is more significant than that of runoff; compared with Qingshui river and Hongliugou river basins, the variation of water and sediment in Kushui river basin is more significant. ② Human activities play a leading role in the variation of water and sediment, and the contribution rate gradually increases; the cumulative slope method, hydrology method, and soil and water conservation method used in the attribution analysis of the variation of water and sediment show that human activity is the main driving factor of the variation of water and sediment, and the cumulative slope method and hydrology method have the same results. ③ According to the soil and water conservation method used in the attribution analysis of the variation of water and sediment in Qingshui river basin, it is found that the water reduction benefits of human activities are dominated by silt dam and terraced fields, with contribute rates of 42.9% and 29.0%, respectively; silt dam is dominant in sediment reduction, with contribute rate of 94.5%. River‐dominated sea deltas have been thoroughly studied by different authors. In these environments the interrelationships of the hydro‐sedimentological variables between river, tides, and waves, among others, are the main factors controlling the delta formation. However, few studies have focused on the deltaic processes in river–lagoon environments and even fewer in large river floodplains (defined here as a fluvial‐lacustrine delta, FLD) and their role in floodplain construction. This study provides a comprehensive and novel analysis approach combining satellite imagery treatment and aerial photographs with detailed field measurements of sediment samplers, cores, and acoustic techniques applied to quantify flow and discharge distribution along main, secondary, floodplain channels, and lagoon systems under different hydro‐sedimentological conditions. All data allow a full description of deltaic processes and the main variables that control the evolution of the major FLD located along the Middle Paraná River floodplain (Argentina). These results show: (i) pre‐existing local geology elements affect the deltaic processes; (ii) the hydro‐sedimentological behaviour of the main channel and its connection with the floodplain channels and independent basin systems affects the delta evolution; (iii) the dynamics (temporally and spatially) of sediment transport input and the interaction with lagoons produce different delta front bars planform and composition; (iv) periods of mean and high water levels play a key role in delta evolution; and (v) the rapid vegetation growth above the formed bars favours the sedimentation of fine material, producing permanent changes and leading to floodplain construction. Particularly, our findings suggest a complex interrelationship between the different factors in this particular environment, such as hydrology, local geology, main/secondary and floodplain channels, sediment supply, sediment transport modes, vegetation, and free surface slopes. All these factors act together in a complex manner, providing unique features to the FLD system that could help us better understand the floodplains construction in large river systems worldwide. These include infrequent access to cloud-free data on stormy days, the influence of wind and currents, and the potential impact of dust storms originating from Africa, among others. On the other hand, soil loss models are sensitive to the parameter values used, and in some cases, the uncertainties are significant. Hence, the ranking derived from remote sensing can serve as a calibration of the models, particularly for the BQART model, which provides information on the catchment’s sink capacity. An index of “sediment productivity per square kilometer and mm of rainfall” was developed. This index can be considered a “sediment delivery ratio” and is crucial for accurately quantifying the phenomenon.

Alluvial rivers aggrade, incise, and adjust their sediment‐transport rates in response to changing sediment and water supply. Fluvial landforms, such as river terraces, and downstream stratigraphic archives may therefore record information about past environmental change. Using a physically based model describing sediment transport and long‐profile evolution of alluvial rivers, we explore how their responses to environmental change depend on distance downstream, forcing timescales, and whether sediment or water supply is varied. We show that amplitudes of aggradation and incision, and therefore the likelihood of terrace formation, are greater upstream and in shorter and/or wetter catchments. Aggradation and incision, and therefore terrace ages, may also lag behind environmental change. How sediment‐transport rates evolve depends strongly on whether water or sediment supply is varied. Diverse responses to environmental change could arise in natural alluvial valleys, controlled by their geometry and hydrology, with important implications for paleo‐environmental interpretations of fluvial archives. Plain Language Summary: Rivers carry sediment from upland regions, where it is produced by weathering and erosion, to low‐lying areas where it is deposited and stored. This process is sensitive to climate: for example, wetter conditions enhance rivers' capacity to transport sediment, causing rivers to cut into their beds, which in turn remobilizes sediment that is transported downstream. Changing climate may also lead to enhanced sediment production and supply to rivers, causing them to accumulate sediment in their beds. Climate cycles can therefore produce alternating periods of sediment accumulation and removal, resulting in ancient floodplains being abandoned and preserved alongside modern rivers ("terraces"), and in variations in the amounts of sediment delivered downstream. Terraces and patterns of sediment accumulation downstream could therefore provide valuable records of past climatic change. We develop a mathematical model that describes the effects of climatic change on river‐bed height and sediment‐transport rates. We show how the amount and timing of river in‐filling and down‐cutting, and the timescales over which they occur, depend on the rate of climatic change, on river length and associated drainage‐basin area, and on the amount of water it carries. These predictions will facilitate more detailed interpretations of terrace records along rivers and of the sedimentary deposits that they leave behind. The recession of Alpine glaciers causes an increase in the extent of proglacial areas that leads to changes in the water and sediment balance morphodynamics and sediment transport. Although the processes occurring in proglacial areas are relevant not only from a scientific point of view but also for the purpose of climate change adaptation, there is a lack of studies on the continuous monitoring and multitemporal characterization of these areas. This work offers a multidisciplinary approach that merges the contributions of different scientific disciplines such as hydrology, geophysics, geomatics and water engineering to characterise the Rutor glacier and its proglacial area. We surveyed the glacier and its proglacial area since 2020 with both uncrewed (drone) and crewed aerial photogrammetric flights; we determined the bathymetry of the most downstream proglacial lake and the thickness of the sediments deposited on its bottom. Water depth at four different locations within the hydrographic network of the proglacial area and the bedload at the glacier snout were continuously monitored. Most current modelling practices for sediment trapping in vegetative filter strips (VFS) assumed a constant sediment trapping efficiency of VFS, while, in practice, it was found to decrease greatly with the increasing trapped sediment amount in VFS (decreasing sediment trapping capacity of VFS). To account for this impact, a widely used VFS sediment transport module was modified to consider the changing sediment trapping capacity of VFS, which was expressed by a power‐law relationship with the inflow discharge, sediment concentration, slope gradient, and antecedent deposition amount. An integrated model that coupled a slope infiltration‐runoff module and the modified sediment transport module was then developed to simulate hydrology and suspended sediment transport in VFS on sloping surface. The model is calibrated and validated by 18 VFS experiments with different inflow, sediment, and slope conditions from Luo et al. (Science of the Total Environment, 725, 138361, 2020). Good agreements between observed and simulated runoff and sediment transport processes were found for nearly all cases. Due to the impact of changing sediment trapping capacity of VFS, the trapped sediment amount and the sediment transport rate of outflow varies greatly in space and time. With the increase of inflow discharge, sediment concentration, and slope gradient, the overall sediment trapping efficiency of VFS tends to decrease greatly and then remains almost unchanged. The comparison between proposed model and original physically based model shows that neglecting the impacts of changing sediment trapping capacity of VFS would lead to a constant and overly large sediment trapping efficiency of VFS, especially on steep slopes. Moreover, comparing with the empirical expression, the model with well‐founded theory can provide higher fidelity and more detailed results. Streamflow in the Ésera and Upper Cinca Rivers (South Central Pyrenees) experiences alterations in the form of rapid pulses, commonly referred to as hydropeaks, associated with highly variable on‐demand hydropower production from flowing or stored water. A hydrological characterization of the hydropeaks in these two rivers was carried out to examine their distinct hydropeaking pattern during hydrologically contrasted years. The Ésera demonstrated a hydropeaking regime characterized by a high frequency and magnitude, while the Upper Cinca presented a regime with higher frequency but of lesser magnitude. Additionally, this study classified hydropeaks following the shapes proposed in previous studies and assessed their temporal distribution (frequency), timing, and magnitude. Results indicated that hydropeaks were different in shape and magnitude in both rivers; a Front Step pulse shape dominated in the Ésera whereas a Rectangle pulse shape was the most frequent in the Cinca. The Front Step shape had the highest ramping rates during the rising limb of the hydrograph and the shortest time to the maximum flow; whereas the Rectangle shape had higher duration and a larger volume of water released. Hydropeaks in the Ésera were less frequent (one per day) than in the Cinca (two per day). The river Ésera presented, in general, high‐magnitude hydropeaks, with double volume and duration, and three times larger up‐ramping rates and time between flow pulses. Overall, hydropeak shapes in the Ésera varied depending on the hydrological year and the season, while in the Cinca, shape distribution followed the same temporal pattern regardless of year and season; thus, hydropeaking in the Ésera appeared to be much more dependent on the annual hydrology (whether the year is wet or dry) than in the Cinca. Hydropeaking regimes were characterized based on three categories of variables: magnitude (flow‐based or hydrological variables), timing (duration), and frequency (occurrence). According to the variability of these variables, a total of three statistically significant groups were obtained in the Ésera, while two groups were identified in the Cinca. Hydropeaks can be statistically classified by their hydrological characteristics that in turn may have a direct effect on sediment entrainment and transport with implications to the ecological functioning of rivers. The different shape of the hydropeaks, however, will control the attenuation of the flows downstream and, consequently, the maintenance of the river's competence and capacity. Abstract: Large‐scale river restoration programs have emerged recently as a tool for improving spawning habitat for native salmonids in highly altered river ecosystems. Few studies have quantified the extent to which restored habitat is utilized by salmonids, which habitat features influence redd site selection, or the persistence of restored habitat over time. We investigated fall‐run Chinook salmon spawning site utilization and measured and modeled corresponding habitat characteristics in two restored reaches: a reach of channel and floodplain enhancement completed in 2013 and a reconfigured channel and floodplain constructed in 2002. Redd surveys demonstrated that both restoration projects supported a high density of salmon redds, 3 and 14 years following restoration. Salmon redds were constructed in coarse gravel substrates located in areas of high sediment mobility, as determined by measurements of gravel friction angles and a grain entrainment model. Salmon redds were located near transitions between pool‐riffle bedforms in regions of high predicted hyporheic flows. Habitat quality (quantified as a function of stream hydraulics) and hyporheic flow were both strong predictors of redd occurrence, though the relative roles of these variables differed between sites. Our findings indicate that physical controls on redd site selection in restored channels were similar to those reported for natural channels elsewhere. Our results further highlight that in addition to traditional habitat criteria (e.g., water depth, velocity, and substrate size), quantifying sediment texture and mobility, as well as intragravel flow, provides a more complete understanding of the ecological benefits provided by river restoration projects.

Proglacial margins form when glaciers retreat and create zones with distinctive ecological, geomorphological and hydrological properties in Alpine environments. There is extensive literature on the geomorphology and sediment transport in such areas as well as on glacial hydrology, but there is much less research into the specific hydrological behavior of the landforms that develop after glacier retreat in and close to proglacial margins. Recent reviews have highlighted the presence of groundwater stores even in such rapidly draining environments. Here, we describe the hydrological functioning of different superficial landforms within and around the proglacial margin of the Otemma glacier, a temperate Alpine glacier in the Swiss Alps; we characterize the timing and amount of the transmission of different water sources (rain, snowmelt, ice melt) to the landforms and between them, and we compare the relationship between these processes and the catchment-scale discharge. The latter is based upon a recession-analysis-based framework. In quantifying the relative groundwater storage volumes of different superficial landforms, we show that steep zones only store water on the timescale of days, while flatter areas maintain baseflow on the order of several weeks. These landforms themselves fail to explain the catchment-scale recession patterns; our results point towards the presence of an unidentified storage compartment on the order of 40 mm, which releases water during the cold months. We suggest attributing this missing storage to deeper bedrock flowpaths. Finally, the key insights gained here into the interplay of different landforms as well as the proposed analysis framework are readily transferable to other similar proglacial margins and should contribute to a better understanding of the future hydrogeological behavior of such catchments. Deltaic channels are significant landforms at the interface of sediment transfer from land to oceanic realms. Understanding the dynamics of these channels is urgent because delta processes are sensitive to climate change and adjustments in human activity. To obtain a better understanding of the morphological processes of large deltaic channels, this study assessed the evolution and response mechanism of the South Channel and South Passage (SCSP) in the Yangtze Estuary between 1983 to 2018 using hydrology, multibeam echo sounding and historical bathymetry datasets. Decadal changes in riverbed volume and erosion/deposition patterns in the SCSP were assessed. The results showed that the SCSP experienced substantial deposition with a total volume of 26.90 × 107 m3 during 1983–2002, but significant bed erosion with a total volume of 26.04 ×107 m3 during 2003–2010. From 2011 to 2018, the estuarine riverbeds shifted from erosive to depositional, even though the deposition was relatively marginal (0.76 ×107 m3). We inferred that the SCSP have most likely changed from a net erosion phase to a deposition stage in response to local human activities including sand mining, river regulation project, and Deep Water Channel Regulation Project). The channel aggradation will possibly continue considering sea level rise and the ongoing anthropogenic impacts. This is the first field evidence reporting that the lowermost Yangtze River is reaching an equilibrium state in terms of channel erosion and, in fact, the Yangtze River Estuary channels are beginning to aggrade. The findings have relevant implications for the management of the Yangtze River and other lowland alluvial rivers in the world as global sea level continues rising and human intervention on estuarine systems persists. Transgression and regression of water levels (stages) have impacted the evolution of aeolian landforms and sedimentary deposits throughout geologic history. We studied this phenomenon over a 5‐day period of reduced flow on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park, AZ, USA, in March 2021. These transient low flows exposed river‐channel sand deposits to the air, causing progressive desiccation (drying) and thereby making these deposits susceptible to aeolian transport. We measured aeolian threshold friction velocities (u*t) for sand saltation and PM10 dust emissions, as well as other characteristics, on a subaerially exposed sandbar and downwind aeolian dunefield during each day of the low river flow. The sandbar transitioned from supply‐limited to transport‐limited aeolian sediment transport conditions during the regression in river water stage. A possible tipping point between the two transport conditions occurred approximately 48 hr after the drop in river flow. The empirically measured u*t decreased as the sandbar sediment dried with increased subaerial exposure time. Theoretical estimates and empirical measurements of u*t corresponded closely on the aeolian dunefield and on the sandbar when it was drier during the third and fourth day of the experiment. Eighty‐seven percent of the variability in u*t was explained by empirical models that provide practical estimates of aeolian transport potential of subaerial river sediment deposits using monitoring data that are commonly available in this and other river systems. The work provides theoretical insight into the response of aeolian processes to sediment supply changes driven by periods of anthropogenic activity, drought, and climate change. Plain Language Summary: Along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park, windblown river sand provides important wildlife habitat, sandy areas for camping, and a protective cover for archeological sites but has decreased since construction of the upstream Glen Canyon Dam. One river management tool for increasing windblown sand is to release artificial "floods" from the dam to deposit sand above the level of typical river flows so it can be redistributed by wind. An alternative approach could be to lower river flows and expose sand that is usually underwater, allowing it to dry sufficiently to be moved by wind. Here we examine whether reducing flows to a low level (stage) for 5 days increases windblown sand. We learned that 48 hr after water stage dropped, a formerly wet sandbar had dried sufficiently so that wind speed, rather than dry sand abundance, had become the main factor limiting the amount of windblown sand. After 72 hr, the ability of wind to transport sand from the previously submerged sandbar was equivalent to an adjacent sand dune that was never inundated. These results show that low steady flows combined with wind offer an alternative to flooding for maintaining sandy landscapes in river valleys. Knowledge of hydrologic connectivity is important to grasp the hydrological response at a basin scale, particularly as changes in connectivity can have a negative effect on the environment. In the context of a changing climate, being able to predict how changes in connectivity will affect runoff and sediment transport is particularly relevant for land-use planning. Many studies on hydrology, geomorphology and climatology have been conducted in the Lake Tana Basin in Ethiopia, which is undergoing rapid development and significant environmental changes. This systematic literature review aims at assessing to what extent the hydrologic connectivity has been taken into account in such research, and to identify research gaps relevant to land and water management. On the Web of Science and Scopus databases, 135 scientific articles covering those topics were identified. Aspects of hydrologic connectivity were mostly implicitly taken into account based on process-based, statistical and descriptive models. Amongst the drivers of changing connectivity, the climate was covered by a large majority of publications (64%). Components of structural hydrologic connectivity were accounted for by considering geomorphology (54%) and soils (47%), and to a lesser extent, hydrography (16%) and geology (12%). Components of functional connectivity were covered by looking at surface water fluxes (61%), sediment fluxes (18%) and subsurface water fluxes (13%). While numerous studies of the Lake Tana Basin accounted for the hydrologic connectivity implicitly, these related predominantly to functional components. The structural components are given less attention, while in the context of a changing climate, better insights into their influence on the hydrologic seem most relevant. Better knowledge of the static aspect of connectivity is particularly important for targeting appropriate soil and water conservation strategies. Flow resistance in open channels determines the average flow velocity in a river, with important implications for downstream and at‐a‐station hydraulic geometry and sediment transport in natural channels. However, flow resistance in steep mountain channels is challenging to understand and predict due to heterogeneous channel morphology and spatially variable flow. Using a double‐averaging approach appropriate for very rough channels, the width, reach, and double‐averaged variables for steady, uniform flow in an open channel are derived. Using an empirical model for the coefficient of form drag, a flow resistance model is derived that compares well to a large data set of flow velocity in natural channels. Several parameters that together describe bed morphology are observed to be relatively consistent in the data set used and compare well to previous estimates of their values. This implies a degree of self‐organization in bed morphology that may simplify the challenging problem of predicting flow resistance in steep mountain rivers. Accurately determining sediment loads is necessary for managing river environments but is difficult because multiple processes can lead to large discharge‐independent changes in sediment transport. Thus, estimations of sediment load using discharge–sediment rating curves fit to sparse or historical sediment‐transport measurements can be inaccurate, necessitating alternative approaches to reduce uncertainty. Continuous sediment‐transport measurements reduce uncertainty because they can be used to detect discharge‐independent changes in transport and are therefore unaffected by hysteresis. We used largely continuous approaches to measure sand transport in the lower Chippewa River, a large sand‐supplying tributary to the Mississippi River. We used side‐looking acoustic‐Doppler profilers to continuously measure suspended‐sand concentration, and bedform‐tracking techniques to episodically measure bedload transport. Bedload transport was then continuously estimated using a discharge‐dependent ratio of bedload to suspended‐sand transport. This approach allowed determination of sand loads that were not estimated based only on water discharge. Our continuous suspended‐sand measurements show that hysteresis between discharge and suspended‐sand concentration occurs during most floods. Quasi‐continuous bed‐elevation measurements using a scour monitor show that lags between discharge and dune geometric adjustment is also common, causing hysteresis between discharge and bedload transport during floods. Furthermore, comparisons of our measurements with historical sediment‐transport measurements indicate large discharge‐independent declines in both suspended‐sand and bedload transport since the 1980s. These findings indicate that sand transport is a non‐stationary function of water discharge over timescales ranging from within individual floods to decades. Consequently, although our continuous‐measurement approach yields only a ~20–30% improvement over rating‐curve estimates of sand load over multi‐year periods, our approach yields up to a factor‐of‐five improvement in sand‐load estimates over the shorter, within a flood timescales, over which the largest discharge‐independent changes in sand transport occur. The study evaluated climate change impact on water flows and nutrient loads to surface water bodies in Lithuania by applying the SWAT model. Seven RCM and GCM combinations were selected and RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate change representative concentration pathways were selected for the study. The study concluded that an annual and winter increase in most river water flows are expected. The change will be driven by rising precipitation, mainly in the regions where it is already high. Less snow would result in less surface runoff, substituted by increased lateral and groundwater flows because of more water percolating through the soils. As a result, water flows could be expected to increase by 9.7% for RCP4.5 and by 35.4% for the RCP8.5 climate scenario by the end-century. Whereas sediment transport and phosphorus loads would tend to decline a little bit (median results are -11.4% and -5.6% respectively for the RCP4.5 scenario, -13.3% and -7.4% for the RCP8.5 by the end of century). Conversely, temperature driven nutrient mineralization and increased leaching are expected to cause a significant increase in nitrogen loads (by 23.1% for the RCP4.5 scenario and by 64.4% for the RCP8.5 by the end of century). Overall, it could be concluded that climate change related hydrometeorological and water quality changes were found to be the most profound for the end-century RCP8.5 climate change scenario. Bed-material sediment particle size data, particularly the median sediment particle size (D50), are critical for understanding and modeling riverine sediment transport. However, sediment particle size observations are primarily available at individual sites. Large-scale modeling and assessment of riverine sediment transport are limited by the lack of continuous regional maps of bed-material sediment particle size. We hence present a map of D50 over the contiguous US in a vector format that corresponds to approximately 2.7 million river segments (i.e., flowlines) in the National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDPlus) dataset. We develop the map in four steps: (1) collect and process the observed D50 data from 2577 U.S. Geological Survey stations or U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sampling locations; (2) collocate these data with the NHDPlus flowlines based on their geographic locations, resulting in 1691 flowlines with collocated D50 values; (3) develop a predictive model using the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning method based on the observed D50 data and the corresponding climate, hydrology, geology, and other attributes retrieved from the NHDPlus dataset; and (4) estimate the D50 values for flowlines without observations using the XGBoost predictive model. Understanding of morphodynamic processes associated with large‐scale floods has recently improved following significant advances of modern technologies. Nevertheless, a clear link between flood discharge and in‐channel sedimentation processes remains to be resolved. The hydrological and geomorphological data available for the meandering Powder River (Montana, USA) since 1977 makes it a perfect laboratory to investigate connections between flood discharge and point‐bar sedimentation processes. This study focuses on a point‐bar that accreted laterally ca 70 m during a 50‐year recurrence flood, which lasted about 14 days in May 1978. In September 2018, a trench ca 2 m deep and 70 m long was excavated through the axial point‐bar deposits, and the 1978 flood deposits were delineated based on georeferenced pre‐flood and post‐flood cross‐section surveys. Sedimentological data show that point‐bar deposits accumulated at the early and late flood stages, when the flow was confined to the channel, and have similarities with classical facies models in terms of palaeocurrent patterns and vertical grain‐size trend. However, during high‐stage flood conditions, when the flow overtopped the bar, cross‐cutting of the bar and armouring were typical processes. Integration of sedimentological and palaeo‐hydrological data highlight that the relation between channel cross‐sectional area and flood discharge play a key role in preserving bar deposits. The integrated approach adopted here provides a basis for advancing palaeoflood hydrology beyond the stage of estimating peak discharges to the next stage of estimating palaeoflood hydrographs. Nivation, the suite of weathering and transportation processes attributed to late-lying snowpatches, is linked to the formation of cryoplanation terraces (CTs). CTs resemble giant staircases arranged in repeating sequences of low-gradient treads and steep scarps that extend over hundreds of meters. The nivation hypothesis of CT development has been supported in recent literature examining weathering and erosion trends, but the mechanisms involved in transporting sediment across CT treads remain underinvestigated. Sorted stripes, a type of patterned ground encountered on CT treads, have been linked to efficient snow meltwater flow across low gradients, indicating that these features could be an important component of CT formation. In this study, we use short-term soil thermal and moisture records, particle-size analysis, and apparent thermal diffusivity calculations to examine periglacial processes operating on two incipient CTs. Initial results indicate that: (1) the coarse (boulder and cobble size) portions of sorted stripes function as subsurface channels for sediment transportation across gently sloping CT treads (generally < 12°) by flowing water; (2) hillslope hydrology is an important component of the erosion processes sculpting upland periglacial environments; and (3) late-lying snowbank environments are highly dynamic during warm weather, with large amounts of sediment transported over short periods. Above average precipitation from October 2018 through July 2019 in the Maumee River (R.) Basin resulted in 29% of cropland left fallow, providing a glimpse of potential effects from decreased nutrient application. Ongoing monitoring at 15 water-quality sites on the Maumee R. upstream from Defiance enabled comparison with 2017, which was hydrologically similar to 2019 in precipitation and streamflow. In 2019, nitrate (as nitrogen; NO 3 -N) for March-July was significantly less than previous years (2015–2018), but the response for phosphorus (P) was more complicated. Relative to 2017, total P (TP) was lower at 7 of 15 sites, but higher at 7, reflecting higher suspended sediment (SS). Dissolved P (DP) was generally lower, but less different than NO 3 ; DP was higher at 3 sites. DP-P:NO 3 -N was generally higher in 2019, DP-P:TP was lower, and there was less TP relative to SS. Overall, less P was in the system in 2019. However smaller streams showed a large range of difference between 2019 and 2017 for all constituents, indicating variability in land management and physiography. In contrast, all constituents were lower in 2019 in larger (>5000 km2) streams, including the Maumee R. near Defiance, where the difference in NO 3 (−37%) exceeded that for TP (−16%), DP (−10%), and SS (−20%). Differences in these relations among N, P, and SS indicate that P was available from legacy sources that are more difficult to distinguish during typical agricultural production years and that some material from 2019 was stored in the system upstream from the largest sites. Realistic characterization of subglacial hydrology necessitates knowledge of the range in form, scale, and spatiotemporal evolution of drainage networks. A relict subglacial meltwater corridor on the deglaciated Antarctic continental shelf encompasses 80 convergent and divergent channels, many of which are hundreds of meters wide and several of which lack a definable headwater source. Without significant surface‐melt contributions to the bed like similarly described landforms in the Northern Hemisphere, channelized drainage capacity varies non‐systematically by three orders of magnitude downstream. This signifies apparent additions and losses of basal water to the bed‐channelized system that relates to bed topography. Larger magnitude grounding‐line retreat events occurred while the channel system was active than once channelized drainage had ceased. Overall, this corridor demonstrates that meltwater drainage styles co‐exist in time and space in response to bed topography, with prolonged impacts on grounding‐line behavior. Evacuation of basal sediment by subglacial drainage is an important mediator of rates of glacial erosion and glacier flow. Glacial erosion patterns can produce closed basins (i.e., overdeepenings) in glacier beds, thereby introducing adverse bed gradients that are hypothesized to reduce drainage system efficiency and thus favour basal sediment accumulation. To establish how the presence of a terminal overdeepening might mediate seasonal drainage system evolution and glacial sediment export, we measured suspended sediment transport from Findelengletscher, Switzerland during late August and early September 2016. Analyses of these data demonstrate poor hydraulic efficiency of drainage pathways in the terminus region but high sediment availability. Specifically, the rate of increase of sediment concentration with discharge was found to be significantly lower than that anticipated if channelized flow paths were present. Sediment availability to these flow paths was also higher than would be anticipated for discrete bedrock‐floored subglacial channels. Our findings indicate that subglacial drainage in the terminal region of Findelengletscher is dominated by distributed flow where entrainment capacity increases only marginally with discharge, but flow has extensive access to an abundant sediment store. This high availability maintains sediment connectivity between the glacial and proglacial realm and means daily sediment yield is unusually high relative to yields exhibited by similar Alpine glaciers. We present a conceptual model illustrating the potential influence of ice‐bed morphology on subglacial drainage evolution and sediment evacuation mechanics, patterns and yields, and recommend that bed morphology should be an explicit consideration when monitoring and evaluating glaciated basin sediment export rates. Bed-material sediment particle size data, particularly for the median sediment particle size (D50), are critical for understanding and modeling riverine sediment transport. However, sediment particle size observations are primarily available at individual sites. Large-scale modeling and assessment of riverine sediment transport are limited by the lack of continuous regional maps of bed-material sediment particle size. We hence present a map of D50 over the contiguous U.S. in a vector format that corresponds to millions of river segments (i.e., flowlines) in the National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDplus) dataset. We develop the map in four steps: 1) collect and process the observed D50 data from 2577 U.S. Geological Survey stations or U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sampling locations; 2) collocate these data with the NHDplus flowlines based on their geographic locations, resulting in 1691 flowlines with collocated D50 values; 3) develop a predictive model using the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning method based on the observed D50 data and the corresponding climate, hydrology, geology and other attributes retrieved from the NHDplus dataset; 4) estimate the D50 values for flowlines without observations using the XGBoost predictive model. Post‐fire catchment and water utility managers throughout the world use predictive models to estimate potential erosion risks to aid in evaluating downstream impacts of increased runoff and erosion, and to target critical areas within a fire for applying mitigation practices. Erosion prediction can be complicated by forest road networks. Using novel GIS technology and soil erosion modelling, this study evaluated the effect of roads on surface runoff, erosion and sediment yields following a wildfire and determined that the predictive models were providing reasonable results. The GeoWEPP model was used to simulate onsite erosion and offsite sediment delivery before and after fire disturbance using a 2‐m resolution DEM as the terrain layer. Erosion rates in excess of 4 Mg ha−1 year−1 were predicted mainly from steep moderate and high severity burn areas. Roads influenced surface runoff flow path distributions and sub‐catchment delineations, affecting the spatial distribution of sediment detachment and transport. Roads tended to reduce estimated erosion on slopes below the roads but increases in erosion rates were estimated for road fillslopes. Estimated deposition amounts on roads and in sediment basins were similar to measured amounts. The results confirm that road prisms, culverts and road ditches influence sedimentation processes after wildfire, and they present opportunities to detain eroded sediments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 20 km2 Galabre catchment belongs to the French network of critical zone observatories (OZCAR; Gaillardet et al., Vadose Zone Journal, 2018, 17(1), 1–24). It is representative of the sedimentary lithology and meteorological forcing found in Mediterranean and mountainous areas. Due to the presence of highly erodible and sloping badlands on various lithologies, the site was instrumented in 2007 to understand the dynamics of suspended sediments (SS) in such areas. Two meteorological stations including measurements of air temperature, wind speed and direction, air moisture, rainfall intensity, raindrop size and velocity distribution were installed both in the upper and lower part of the catchment. At the catchment outlet, a gauging station records the water level, temperature and turbidity (10 min time‐step). Stream water samples are collected automatically to estimate SS concentration‐turbidity relationships, allowing quantification of SS fluxes with known uncertainty. The sediment samples are further characterized by measuring their particle size distributions and by applying a low‐cost sediment fingerprinting approach using spectrocolorimetric tracers. Thus, the contributions of badlands located on different lithologies to total SS flux are quantified at a high temporal resolution, providing the opportunity to better analyse the links between meteorological forcing variability and watershed hydrosedimentary response. The set of measurements was extended to the dissolved phase in 2017. Both stream water electrical conductivity and major ion concentrations are measured each week and every 3 h during storm events. This extension of measurements to the dissolved phase will allow progress in understanding both the origin of the water during the events and the partitioning between particulate and dissolved fluxes of solutes in the critical zone. Since the 1950s, Moenkopi Wash, in Arizona, United States, has been transformed from a relatively wide river with little riparian vegetation, to a narrow, heavily vegetated river that is less than half of its former width. We analyzed a ∼95-years-long instantaneous-discharge record, an extensive sediment-transport record, oblique and aerial photographs, historical channel surveys, and historical stage-discharge rating relations to determine the primary mechanisms responsible for this transformation. Frequent, large floods dominated the early part of the discharge record between 1926 and 1940. A dramatic ∼30 % decrease in annual mean discharge, and ∼27 % decrease in the mean of the partial-duration flood series occurred in 1941. This decline did not result in widespread channel change but provided an opportunity for vegetation to establish along the channel margins. Widespread channel narrowing began after a second decline in mean and peak discharge in 1956 at which time the channel banks became heavily vegetated. Between 1952 and 2019, the river channel narrowed by 57–59 %. Approximately 2–4 m of bed aggradation occurred at most study sites. As the channel narrowed and became more vegetated, large floods maintained the narrower channel width but did not cause rewidening. Suspended-sediment transport data illustrate the sediment trapping effects of vegetation that lead to channel narrowing; suspended-sand concentrations decline, thereby indicating sediment deposition, as vegetation becomes progressively inundated during floods. Furthermore, dense channel-margin and floodplain vegetation provide increased roughness, resulting in flood-peak attenuation and alteration of hydrograph shape. Vegetation expansion causes positive feedbacks whereby sediment deposition during floods is exacerbated by the roughness and sediment-trapping effects of vegetation leading to further narrowing. These positive feedbacks have reduced sediment delivery to the Little Colorado River downstream. Net primary productivity (NPP) has been the subject of numerous studies, but the qualitative and comparative study on NPP that considers human activities, climate change, and their interactions is still insufficient. The Grain for Green Program (GTGP) was established in the Loess Plateau since 1999, could be used as a reference study. The temporal and spatial patterns, change trend, and driving factors of vegetation NPP were analysed in Loess Plateau using data derived from GLASS NPP (the Global Land Surface Satellite Product), meteorology, atmospheric quality, hydrology and land use by correlation and improved residual trend analysis from 2000 to 2020. After GTGP implementation, the climate and human contributions to vegetation NPP were 62 % and 38 %. NPP increased at a rate of 6.3 g C m−2 a−1 from 2000 to 2020, which was higher in 2010–2020 (6.9 g C m−2 a−1) than it was in 2000–2010 (5.7 g C m−2 a−1). The same trend was followed by the contribution of climate change to NPP between 2010 and 2020 (70.6 %) and 2000–2010 (65 %). The GTGP core area was mostly where the vegetation NPP rising zone was located. From the original bare land in the desert area, 4442 km2 of vegetation grew and increased the NPP (68.7 g C m−2). Under the warm–humid climatic trend, the climate factors contributed to NPP more in grasslands (40 %) compared to woodlands (29 %) and precipitation (33 %) was more sensitive than temperature (12.7 %). Consequently, sediment transport, PM 2.5 and dusty weather decreased significantly. In conclusion, although climate change has a greater impact on vegetation, human activities have enhanced the impact faster in the first decade, which benefit and profit from the environment finally. Thermal erosion is a major mechanism of permafrost degradation, resulting in characteristic landforms. We inventory thermo‐erosional valleys in ice‐rich coastal lowlands adjacent to the Siberian Laptev Sea based on remote sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), and field investigations for a first regional assessment of their spatial distribution and characteristics. Three study areas with similar geological (Yedoma Ice Complex) but diverse geomorphological conditions vary in valley areal extent, incision depth, and branching geometry. The most extensive valley networks are incised deeply (up to 35 m) into the broad inclined lowland around Mamontov Klyk. The flat, low‐lying plain forming the Buor Khaya Peninsula is more degraded by thermokarst and characterized by long valleys of lower depth with short tributaries. Small, isolated Yedoma Ice Complex remnants in the Lena River Delta predominantly exhibit shorter but deep valleys. Based on these hydrographical network and topography assessments, we discuss geomorphological and hydrological connections to erosion processes. Relative catchment size along with regional slope interact with other Holocene relief‐forming processes such as thermokarst and neotectonics. Our findings suggest that thermo‐erosional valleys are prominent, hitherto overlooked permafrost degradation landforms that add to impacts on biogeochemical cycling, sediment transport, and hydrology in the degrading Siberian Yedoma Ice Complex. Environmental DNA (eDNA) can be used for early detection, population estimations, and assessment of potential spread of invasive species, but questions remain about factors that influence eDNA detection results. Efforts are being made to understand how physical, chemical, and biological factors—settling, resuspension, dispersion, eDNA stability/decay—influence eDNA estimations and potentially population abundance. In a series of field and controlled mesocosm experiments, we examined the detection and accumulation of eDNA in sediment and water and the transport of eDNA in a small stream in the Lake Michigan watershed, using the invasive round goby fish (Neogobius melanostomus) as a DNA source. Experiment 1: caged fish (average n = 44) were placed in a stream devoid of round goby; water was collected over 24 hours along 120-m of stream, including a simultaneous sampling event at 7 distances from DNA source; stream monitoring continued for 24 hours after fish were removed. Experiment 2: round goby were placed in laboratory tanks; water and sediment were collected over 14 days and for another 150 days post-fish removal to calculate eDNA shedding and decay rates for water and sediment. For samples from both experiments, DNA was extracted, and qPCR targeted a cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI) fragment specific to round goby. Results indicated that eDNA accumulated and decayed more slowly in sediment than water. In the stream, DNA shedding was markedly lower than calculated in the laboratory, but models indicate eDNA could potentially travel long distances (up to 50 km) under certain circumstances. Collectively, these findings show that the interactive effects of ambient conditions (e.g., eDNA stability and decay, hydrology, settling-resuspension) are important to consider when developing comprehensive models. The impact of glaciers on the Quaternary evolution of mountainous landscapes remains controversial. Although in situ or bedrock low-temperature thermochronology offers insights on past rock exhumation and landscape erosion, the method also suffers from potential biases due to the difficulty of sampling bedrock buried under glaciers. Detrital thermochronology attempts to overcome this issue by sampling sediments at e.g. the catchment outlet, a component of which may originate from beneath the ice. However, detrital age distributions not only reflect the catchment exhumation, but also spatially variable patterns and rates of surface erosion and sediment transport. In this study, we use a new version of a glacial landscape evolution model, iSOSIA, to address the effect of erosion and sediment transport by ice on the form of synthetic detrital age distributions. Sediments are tracked as Lagrangian particles formed by bedrock erosion, and their transport is restricted to ice or hillslope processes, neglecting subglacial hydrology, until they are deposited. We base our model on the Tiedemann Glacier (British Columbia, Canada), which has simple morphological characteristics, such as a linear form and no connectivity to large tributary glaciers. Synthetic detrital age distributions are generated by specifying an erosion history, then sampling sediment particles at the frontal moraine of the modelled glacier. Results show that sediment sources, reflecting different processes such as glacier and hillslope erosion, can have distinct bedrock age distribution signatures, and estimating such distributions should help to identify predominant sources in the sampling site. However, discrepancies between the detrital and bedrock age distributions occur due to (i) the selective storage of a large proportion of sediments in small tributary glaciers and in lateral moraines, (ii) the large range of particle transport times due to varying transport lengths and strong variability of glacier ice velocity, (iii) the heterogeneous pattern of erosion, and (iv) the advective nature of glacier sediment transport along ice streamlines. This last factor leads to a poor lateral mixing of particle detrital signatures inside the frontal moraine, and then local sampling of the frontal moraine is likely to reflect local sources upstream. Therefore, sampling randomly across the moraine is preferred for a more representative view of the catchment age distribution. Finally, systematic comparisons between synthetic (U-Th)/He and fission track detrital ages, with different bedrock age-elevation profiles and different relative age uncertainties, show that the nature of the age-elevation relationship and age uncertainties largely control the ability to track sediment sources in the detrital record. However, depending on the erosion pattern spatially, qualitative first-order information may still be extracted from a thermochronological system with high uncertainties (>30 %). Overall, our results demonstrate that detrital age distributions in glaciated catchments are strongly impacted not only by erosion and exhumation but also by sediment transport processes and their spatial variability. Many regions around the globe are subjected to precipitation-data scarcity that often hinders the capacity of hydrological modeling. The entropy theory and the principle of maximum entropy can help hydrologists to extract useful information from the scarce data available. In this work, we propose a new method to assess sub-daily precipitation features such as duration and intensity based on daily precipitation using the principle of maximum entropy. Particularly in arid and semiarid regions, such sub-daily features are of central importance for modeling sediment transport and deposition. The obtained features were used as input to the SYPoME model (sediment yield using the principle of maximum entropy). The combined method was implemented in seven catchments in Northeast Brazil with drainage areas ranging from 10−3 to 10+2 km2 in assessing sediment yield and delivery ratio. The results show significant improvement when compared with conventional deterministic modeling, with Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) of 0.96 and absolute error of 21% for our method against NSE of −4.49 and absolute error of 105% for the deterministic approach.

The fate and transport of mercury are of critical concern in lowland floodplains and wetlands worldwide, especially those with a history of upstream mining that increases the mobility of both dissolved and sediment-bound Hg in watersheds. A mass budget of total mercury (THg) quantifies sources and storage for particular areas - knowledge that is required for understanding of management options in lowland floodplains. In order to assess contaminant risk in the largest flood-control bypass, prime wetland, and restoration target in the Sacramento River basin, we estimated empirical relationships between THg, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), and streamflow (Q) for each of the major inputs and outputs using data from various publicly available sources. These relationships were improved by incorporating statistical representations of the dynamics of seasonal and intra-flood exhaustion (hysteresis) of sediment and mercury. Using continuous records of Q to estimate SSC suspended sediment flux and SSC to estimate THg flux, we computed the net transfer of sediment-adsorbed mercury through the Yolo Bypass over a decade, 1993-2003. Flood control weirs spilling Sacramento River floodwaters into the bypass deliver ~75% of the water and ~50% of the river's suspended sediment load, while one Coast Range tributary of the bypass, Cache Creek, contributes twice the THg load of the mainstem Sacramento. Although estimated sediment flux entering Yolo Bypass is balanced by efflux to the Sacramento/San Francisco Bay-Delta, there is much evidence of deposition and remobilization of sediment in Yolo Bypass during flooding. These factors point to the importance of the bypass as sedimentary reservoir and as an evolving substrate for biogeochemical processing of heavy metals. The estimates of mercury flux suggest net deposition of ~500 kg in the 24,000 ha floodway over a decade, dominated by two large floods, representing a storage reservoir for this important contaminant.

Sediment transport is one of the major challenging fields in hydrology. The tropical atmosphere, complex topography and occasional extreme precipitation are the fundamental explanations behind this challenge. Thus, the rivers in this situation contain a huge quantity of sediment, which may affect the river hydraulics. Hence, it is required to collect various parameters such as discharge, velocity, rainfall and sediment concentration to analyze the impact of sediment for river engineering practices and management. Therefore, the dataset which is collected from the river may contain outliers and noises. For improving the prediction accuracy of sediment load, we present robust regularized extreme learning machine frameworks to reduce the effect of noise by using the asymmetric Huber loss function named as AHELM and ε - insensitive Huber loss function named as ε - AHELM. Further, the problems are rewritten in the form of strongly convex minimization problems whose solutions are acquired by simple function iterative schemes. To ensure the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we have considered the real-world datasets with two types of noises. Furthermore, the proposed schemes are applied on real sediment load datasets (SLDs) which are collected from the Tawang Chu river of Arunachal Pradesh, India. The results reveal that proposed AHELM and ε - AHELM with multiquadric activation function are performed better for real-world datasets, whereas AHELM and ε - AHELM with sigmoid activation function perform efficiently and effectively for the sediment load prediction. In overall, the experimental results clearly exhibit the applicability as well as the usability of the proposed extreme learning machine with asymmetric Huber loss functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present full water depth sections of size‐fractionated (1–51 μm; >51 μm) concentrations of suspended particulate matter and major particle phase composition (particulate organic matter [POM], including its carbon isotopic composition [POC‐δ13C] and C:N ratio, calcium carbonate [CaCO3], opal, lithogenic particles, and iron and manganese [oxyhydr]oxides) from the U.S. GEOTRACES Arctic Cruise (GN01) in the western Arctic in 2015. Whereas biogenic particles (POM and opal) dominate the upper 1,000 m, lithogenic particles are the most abundant particle type at depth. Minor phases such as manganese (Mn) oxides are higher in GN01 than in any other U.S. GEOTRACES cruises so far. Extremely depleted POC‐δ13C, as low as ~ −32‰, is ubiquitous at the surface of the western Arctic Ocean as a result of different growth rates of phytoplankton. Moderate penetration of depleted POC‐δ13C to depth indicates active sinking of large particles in the central basin. Lateral transport from the Chukchi shelf is also of significance in the western Arctic, as is evident from increases in biogenic silica to POC ratios and Mn oxide concentrations in the halocline, as well as lithogenic element contents in the deep waters. Our study supports previous suggestions of the near absence of CaCO3 in the Arctic Basin. This study presents the first data set of concentration and composition of suspended particles in the western Arctic Ocean and sheds new light on the vertical and lateral processes that govern particle distribution in this enclosed ocean basin.
