1. Investigation on hydrogen production from paper sludge without inoculation and its enhancement by Clostridium thermocellum.

Abstract

The feasibility and performance of hydrogen production from paper sludge without inoculation was investigated under thermophilic conditions. The maximum hydrogen production reached 64.32 mM with 7.4% PS. The dynamic changes in bacterial community structures during hydrogen production were investigated by analyzing 16S rDNA gene sequences using high throughput sequencing technology. The results showed that microbial community was dominated by order Clostridiales and Thermoanaerobacterales. Genus Thermoanaerobacterium and Ruminiclostridium played a leading role in the fermentation process, which was responsible for the hydrolysis of PS and hydrogen production. Effect of inoculation with Clostridium thermocellum on hydrogen production from PS was also studied. The results showed that C. thermocellum supplement significantly increased hydrogen yield and holocellulose degradation rate by 96.80% and 32.95%, respectively. In addition, inoculation of C. thermocellum enhanced VFA generation and shortened the lag phase of hydrogen production. Abstract

Aqueous phase hydrodeoxygenation of lignin pyrolysis oil and related model compounds were investigated using four noble metals supported on activated carbon. The hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol has three major reaction pathways and the demethylation reaction, mainly catalyzed by Pd, Pt and Rh, produces catechol as the products. The presence of catechol and guaiacol in the reaction is responsible for the coke formation and the catalysts deactivation. As expected, there was a significant decrease in the specific surface area of Pd, Pt and Rh catalysts during the catalytic reaction because of the coke deposition. In contrast, no catechol was produced from guaiacol when Ru was used so a completely hydrogenation was accomplished. The lignin pyrolysis oil upgrading with Pt and Ru catalysts further validated the reaction mechanism deduced from model compounds. Abstract

Selective production of 4-ethylphenolics from lignin via mild hydrogenolysis was reported in this short communication. The hydrogenolysis of lignin was carried out in an autoclave with 65 vol.% ethanol/water as solvent, with 5% Ru/C, Pd/C and Pt/C as catalysts. The influences of catalysts, lignin species, and reaction conditions including reaction temperature, reaction time, and initial H(2) pressure on yield of target compounds were investigated. 3.1% 4-Ethylphenol and 1.3% 4-ethylguaiacol based on lignin could be obtained simultaneously from hydrogenolysis of corn stalk lignin, which is approximate to the yield obtained from petrochemical route. Abstract

International audience; This paper focuses on hydrogen production for green mobility applications (other applications are currently under investigation). Firstly, a brief state of the art of hydrogen generation by hydrolysis with magnesium is shown. The hydrolysis performance of Magnesium powder ball–milled along with different additives (graphite and transition metals TM = Ni, Fe, and Al) is taken for comparison. The best performance was observed with Mg–10 wt.% g mixtures (95% of theoretical hydrogen generation yield in about 3 min). An efficient solution to control this hydrolysis reaction is proposed to produce hydrogen on demand and to feed a PEM fuel cell. Tests on a bench fitted with a 100 W Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell have demonstrated the technological potential of this solution for electric assistance applications in the field of light mobility.
