With global warming, changes in glaciers and glacial lakes on the Tibetan Plateau call for a serious inspection. The Southeastern Tibetan Plateau (SETP) is a typical monsoonal marine glacier area that is extremely vulnerable to climate change. It is affected by both humid and warm Indian Ocean currents. Outlines of glaciers and glacial lakes in SETP have been extracted from Landsat satellite images with an automatic extraction method based on image compositing with Google Earth Engine and Random Forest algorithm. Alongside the outlines, meteorological data have been collected from 1990 to 2021. The results show that since 1990 the glacier area of SETP has retreated by about 2165.33 km2 (~25.28%), the glacial lake area has increased by about 36.41 km2 (~21.45%), and their number has increased by 477 (~27.32%). The reliability and scientific validity of this study is proven by comparison with existing glacier inventories. By analyzing the meteorological data, the inverse correlation between the glacier area and temperature has been found. Despite decreases in cumulative precipitation, the glacial lake level rise and consequent area expansion have been observed. During the last glacial interval, the Northern Hemisphere climate was punctuated by a series of abrupt changes between two characteristic climate regimes. The existence of stadial (cold) and interstadial (milder) periods is typically attributed to a hypothesised bistability in the glacial North Atlantic climate system, allowing for rapid transitions from the stadial to the interstadial state – the so-called Dansgaard–Oeschger (DO) events – and more gradual yet still fairly abrupt reverse shifts. The physical mechanisms driving these regime transitions remain debated. DO events are characterised by substantial warming over Greenland and a reorganisation of the Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation, which are evident from concomitant shifts in the δ18 O ratios and dust concentration records from Greenland ice cores. Treating the combined δ18 O and dust record obtained by the North Greenland Ice Core Project (NGRIP) as a realisation of a two-dimensional, time-homogeneous, and Markovian stochastic process, we present a reconstruction of its underlying deterministic drift based on the leading-order terms of the Kramers–Moyal equation. The analysis reveals two basins of attraction in the two-dimensional state space that can be identified with the stadial and interstadial regimes. The drift term of the dust exhibits a double-fold bifurcation structure, while – in contrast to prevailing assumptions – the δ18 O component of the drift is clearly mono-stable. This suggests that the last glacial's Greenland temperatures should not be regarded as an intrinsically bistable climate variable. Instead, the two-regime nature of the δ18 O record is apparently inherited from a coupling to another bistable climate process. Disentangling the effects of glaciers and climate on vegetation is complicated by the confounding role that climate plays in both systems. We reconstructed changes in vegetation occurring over the Holocene at Jøkelvatnet, a lake located directly downstream from the Langfjordjøkel glacier in northern Norway. We used a sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) metabarcoding dataset of 38 samples from a lake sediment core spanning 10,400 years using primers targeting the P6 loop of the trnL (UAA) intron. A total of 193 plant taxa were identified revealing a pattern of continually increasing richness over the time period. Vegetation surveys conducted around Jøkelvatnet show a high concordance with the taxa identified through sedaDNA metabarcoding. We identified four distinct vegetation assemblage zones with transitions at ca. 9.7, 8.4 and 4.3 ka with the first and last mirroring climatic shifts recorded by the Langfjordjøkel glacier. Soil disturbance trait values of the vegetation increased with glacial activity, suggesting that the glacier had a direct impact on plants growing in the catchment. Temperature optimum and moisture trait values correlated with both glacial activity and reconstructed climatic variables showing direct and indirect effects of climate change on the vegetation. In contrast to other catchments without an active glacier, the vegetation at Jøkelvatnet has displayed an increased sensitivity to climate change throughout the Middle and Late Holocene. Beyond the direct impact of climate change on arctic and alpine vegetation, our results suggest the ongoing disappearance of glaciers will have an additional effect on plant communities. Holocene environmental and climate change on the Tibetan Plateau is intensively studied and discussed with the aim to better understand the factors controlling the hydrology of individual river catchments and especially the availability of water which is of utmost significance for the communities downstream in times of rapid climate change. Thus, a late glacial and Holocene sediment record from Lake Heihai in the Kunlun-Pass region was investigated using ostracod and geochemical analyses. Cold and dry conditions were inferred between ca. 12.9 and 12.3 cal ka BP and higher temperatures before and afterwards. The cold spell probably corresponds to the Younger Dryas (YD) event in the North Atlantic region. Warmer and wetter conditions with highest lake levels and decreased lake-water salinity were recorded from ca. 10.8 to 7.0 cal ka BP when the summer monsoon was strengthened. The cold 8.2 cal ka BP event is not significantly recorded in the region probably due to the predominance of the summer monsoon over the westerlies. A declined lake level and increased lake-water salinity as the result of cold and dry conditions are inferred from ca. 7.0 to 4.5 cal ka BP when the strengthening of the mid-latitude westerly circulation probably triggered glacier advances in the catchment. An even lower lake level existed during cold conditions with glacier advances from ca. 4.5 to 1.2 cal ka BP. The level of Lake Heihai rose again after ca. 1.2 cal ka BP due to warmer conditions, causing the retreat of glaciers and higher runoff. Our record from the Kunlun Pass region provides further evidence for the catchment-specific response of hydrographical systems which are partly controlled by glaciers as major water sources. Climate change is causing glaciers to retreat across much of the Himalaya, leading to a rapid shift of the vegetation cover to higher altitudes. However, the rate of vegetation shift with respect to glacier retreat, climate change, and topographic parameters is not empirically quantified. Using remote sensing measurements, we estimate (a) the rate of glacier-ice mass loss, (b) the upward vegetation line shift rate, (c) regional greening trends, and (d) a relationship between the factors influencing the greenness of the landscape and vegetation change in the Himalaya. We find that the glacier mass loss rate is 10.9 ± 1.2 Gt/yr and the mean vegetation line shifts upward in altitude by 7–28 ± 1.5 m/yr. Considering the land use/land cover change pattern, the grassland area is found to be expanding the most, particularly in the de-glaciated regions. The Last Glacial Termination (T1) featured major changes in global circulation systems that led to a shift from glacial to interglacial climate. While polar ice cores attest to an antiphased thermal pattern at millennial timescales, recent well-dated moraine records from both hemispheres suggest in-phase fluctuations in glaciers through T1, which is inconsistent with the bipolar see-saw paradigm. Here, we present a glacier chronology based on 30 new 10Be surface exposure ages from well-preserved moraines in the Lago Palena/General Vintter basin in northern Patagonia (~ 44°S). We find that the main glacier lobe underwent profound retreat after 19.7 ± 0.7 ka. This recessional trend led to the individualization of the Cerro Riñón glacier by ~ 16.3 ka, which underwent minor readvances at 15.9 ± 0.5 ka during Heinrich Stadial 1, during the Antarctic Cold Reversal with successive maxima at 13.5 ± 0.4, 13.1 ± 0.4, and 13.1 ± 0.5 ka, and a minor culmination at 12.5 ± 0.4 ka during Younger Dryas time. We conclude that fluctuations of Patagonian glaciers during T1 were controlled primarily by climate anomalies brought by shifts in the Southern Westerly Winds (SWW) locus. We posit that the global covariation of mountain glaciers during T1 was linked to variations in atmospheric CO2 (atmCO2) promoted by the interplay of the SWW-Southern Ocean system at millennial timescales. [Display omitted] With ongoing global warming and permafrost thawing, weathering processes will change on the Yukon River, with risks for water quality and ecosystem sustainability. Here, we explore the relationship between weathering processes and permafrost cover using elemental concentration and strontium and lithium isotopic data in the dissolved load of 102 samples collected during the summer across most major tributaries of the Yukon River. The Yukon River basin is dominated by silicate weathering with a high contribution from young volcanic rock units. In glaciated mountainous zones, we observe higher carbonate weathering contribution, low Li/Na ratios and low δ 7Li values (<15‰). In these areas, the high denudation rate and high supply of fresh minerals associated with alpine glaciers favor congruent silicate weathering, and sulfide oxidation accelerates carbonate weathering. In floodplains covered by continuous permafrost, we observe a high carbonate weathering contribution, relatively high Li/Na ratios, and low δ 7Li values (∼18‰). We argue that the minimal water–rock interactions in this setting inhibit silicate weathering and favor congruent weathering of easily weatherable minerals (i.e., carbonates). Conversely, in areas with discontinuous or sporadic permafrost, we observe a dominance of silicate weathering, with higher and more variable Li/Na ratios and high δ 7Li values (11–33‰). In this setting, longer water–rock interactions combined with the high supply of fresh minerals from mountain zones favor more incongruent weathering. The unique history of Pleistocene glaciations on the Yukon River basin also influences weathering processes. Many areas of the basin were never glaciated during the Pleistocene, and rivers draining those regions have higher δ 7Li values suggesting more incongruent weathering associated with deeper flow paths and longer water residence time in the regolith. Our work underlines that water–rock interactions, including active layer weathering and groundwater inputs, are highly dependent on climate conditions and glacial processes across the Yukon River basin, with key implications for future water quality in this warming basin. High‐latitude glacierized coastal catchments of the Gulf of Alaska (GoA) are undergoing rapid hydrologic changes in response to climate change and glacial recession. These catchments deliver important nutrients in the form of both inorganic and organic matter to the nearshore marine environment, yet are relatively understudied with respect to characterization of the sediment and solute generation processes and total yields. Using multiple linear regression informed by Bayesian Information Criterion analysis we empirically demonstrate how watershed characteristics affect suspended sediment and solute generation as represented by concentration‐discharge relationships. We find that watershed mean slope and relief control solute generation and that solute yields are influenced most by glacier coverage. We contribute a new flux and concentration‐discharge based conceptualization for understanding solute cycles across a hydroclimatic gradient of GoA watersheds that can be used to better understand future watershed responses to rapid hydrologic change. Streams and rivers within basins that contain glaciers deliver vital nutrients to the ocean. However, regional studies to quantify the generation and delivery of rock‐derived nutrients from watersheds to the ocean are lacking. This study uses statistical analysis to identify the mechanisms controlling the release of nutrients and to demonstrate the physical watershed characteristics that influence the flux of nutrients at the watershed scale. We find that topographic characteristics (slope and relief) control nutrient‐generating processes and that glacier coverage is an important factor controlling the total amount of nutrients exported by streams. This contribution presents a new conceptualization for understanding nutrient delivery to the GoA that can be used to understand future responses to changing climate regimes. Atmospheric warming is intensifying glacier melting and glacial-lake development in High Mountain Asia (HMA), and this could increase glacial-lake outburst flood (GLOF) hazards and impact water resources and hydroelectric-power management. There is therefore a pressing need to obtain comprehensive knowledge of the distribution and area of glacial lakes and also to quantify the variability in their sizes and types at high resolution in HMA. In this work, we developed an HMA glacial-lake inventory (Hi-MAG) database to characterize the annual coverage of glacial lakes from 2008 to 2017 at 30 m resolution using Landsat satellite imagery. Our data show that glacial lakes exhibited a total area increase of 90.14 km 2 in the period 2008–2017, a +6.90 % change relative to 2008 (1305.59±213.99 km 2). The annual increases in the number and area of lakes were 306 and 12 km 2 , respectively, and the greatest increase in the number of lakes occurred at 5400 m elevation, which increased by 249. Proglacial-lake-dominated areas, such as the Nyainqêntanglha and central Himalaya, where more than half of the glacial-lake area (summed over a 1 ∘ × 1 ∘ grid) consisted of proglacial lakes, showed obvious lake-area expansion. Conversely, some regions of eastern Tibetan mountains and Hengduan Shan, where unconnected glacial lakes occupied over half of the total lake area in each grid, exhibited stability or a slight reduction in lake area. Our results demonstrate that proglacial lakes are a main contributor to recent lake evolution in HMA, accounting for 62.87 % (56.67 km 2) of the total area increase. Proglacial lakes in the Himalaya ranges alone accounted for 36.27 % (32.70 km 2) of the total area increase. Regional geographic variability in debris cover, together with trends in warming and precipitation over the past few decades, largely explains the current distribution of supraglacial- and proglacial-lake area across HMA. Glaciers over the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding regions during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) were much more extensive than during the preindustrial period (PI). The climate impact of such glacial expansion is studied here using the Community Atmosphere Model, version 4 (CAM4). To cover the range of uncertainty in glacier area during the LGM, the following three values are tested: 0.35 × 106, 0.53 × 106, and 0.70 × 106 km². The added glacier is distributed approximately equally over the Pamir region and the Himalayas. If 0.70 × 106 km² is used, the annual mean surface temperature of the glaciated regions would be cooled by ~3.5°C. The annual mean precipitation would be reduced by 0.2 mm day−1 (10%) and 2.5 mm day−1 (24%) over the Pamir region and Himalayas, respectively. The surface mass balance (SMB) of the glaciers changes by 0.55 m yr−1 (280%) and −0.32 m yr−1 (−20%) over the two regions, respectively. The changes in SMB remain large (0.29 and −0.13 m yr−1), even if the area of the Tibetan glacier were 0.35 × 106 km². Therefore, based on the results of this particular model, the expansion of glaciers can either enhance or slow the glacial growth. Moreover, the expansion of glaciers over the Himalayas reduces summer precipitation in central and northern China by ~0.5 mm day−1 and increases summer precipitation in southern Asia by ~0.6 mm day−1. The expansion of glaciers over the Pamir region has a negligible influence on the precipitation in these monsoonal regions, which is likely due to its large distance from the main monsoonal regions. There is a growing appreciation of the uncertainties in the estimation of snow‐melt and glacier‐melt as a result of climate change in high elevation catchments. Through a detailed examination of three hydrological models in two catchments, and interpretation of results from previous studies, we observed that many variations in estimated streamflow could be explained by the selection of a best parameter set from the possible good model parameters. The importance of understanding changing glacial dynamics is critically important for our study areas in the Upper Indus Basin where Pakistan's policymakers are planning infrastructure to meet the future energy and water needs of hundreds of millions of people downstream. Yet, the effect of climate on glacial runoff and climate on snowmelt runoff is poorly understood. With the HBV model, for example, we estimated glacial melt as between 56% and 89% for the Hunza catchment. When rainfall was a scaled parameter, the models estimated glacial melt as between 20% and 100% of streamflow. These parameter sets produced wildly different projections of future climate for RCP8.5 scenarios in 2046–2075 compared to 1976–2005. Assuming no glacial shrinkage, for one climate projection, we found that the choice among good parameter sets resulted in projected values of future streamflow across a range from +54% to +125%. Parameter selection was the most significant source of uncertainty in the glaciated catchment and amplified climate model uncertainty, whereas climate model choice was more important in the rainfall dominated catchment. Although the study focuses on Pakistan, the overall conclusions are instructive for other similar regions in the world. We suggest that modellers of glaciated catchments should present results from at least the book‐ends: models with low sensitivity to ice‐melt and models with high sensitivity to ice‐melt. Some lateral moraines contain a rich record of Holocene glacial expansion. Previous workers have used such evidence to document glacial fluctuations in western Canada, Alaska, and the U.S. Pacific Northwest, but similar studies in Patagonia are uncommon. Here we report on the late Holocene behavior of Stoppani Glacier, a 75 km2 glacier sourced in the Cordillera Darwin, southernmost Patagonia. Based on radiocarbon-dated wood and organic material contained in the glacier's northeast lateral moraine, we infer that Stoppani Glacier advanced shortly before 3.8–3.6, at 3.2–2.8, 2.3–2.1, and 0.3–0.2, and possibly sometime before 1.4–1.3 and 0.8–0.7 cal ka BP. These advances culminated at 0.3–0.2 cal ka BP, when the glacier constructed a prominent end moraine, marking its greatest extent of the past 4000 years. Although the timing of several of the advances overlap with the age range of glacial expansion recognized elsewhere in Patagonia, some do not. Asynchronous behavior observed in the glacial record may arise from the type of evidence (e.g., lateral stratigraphy vs. end moraine) used to document glacial fluctuations or variations in climate or glacial response times. A significant difference between the Stoppani record and some other Patagonian records is that the former indicates general expansion of ice over the last 4000 years, whereas the latter indicate a net decrease in extent over that period. The uncertain response of marine terminating outlet glaciers to climate change at time scales beyond short-term observation limits models of future sea level rise. At temperate tidewater margins, abundant subglacial meltwater forms morainal banks (marine shoals) or ice-contact deltas that reduce water depth, stabilizing grounding lines and slowing or reversing glacial retreat. Here we present a radiocarbon-dated record from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1421 that tracks the terminus of the largest Alaskan Cordilleran Ice Sheet outlet glacier during Last Glacial Maximum climate transitions. Sedimentation rates, ice-rafted debris, and microfossil and biogeochemical proxies, show repeated abrupt collapses and slow advances typical of the tidewater glacier cycle observed in modern systems. When global sea level rise exceeded the local rate of bank building, the cycle of readvances stopped leading to irreversible retreat. These results support theory that suggests sediment dynamics can control tidewater terminus position on an open shelf under temperate conditions delaying climate-driven retreat. Tidewater glaciers in fjords can advance/retreat independent of climate due to stabilization by sediments at their termini. We show that an Alaskan paleo-ice stream behaved similarly on an open shelf, suggesting that increased sediment flux may delay catastrophic retreat of outlet glaciers in a warming world. Glacier recession is a globally occurring trend. Although a rich body of work has documented glacial response to climate warming, few studies have assessed vegetation cover change in recently deglaciated areas, especially using geospatial technologies. Here, vegetation change at two glacier forefronts in Glacier National Park, Montana, U.S.A. was quantified through remote sensing analysis, fieldwork validation, and statistical modeling. Specifically, we assessed the spatial and temporal patterns of landcover change at the two glacier forefronts in Glacier National Park and determined the role of selected biophysical terrain factors (elevation, slope, aspect, solar radiation, flow accumulation, topographic wetness index, and surficial geology) on vegetation change (from non-vegetated to vegetated cover) at the deglaciated areas. Landsat imagery of the study locations in 1991, 2003, and 2015 were classified and validated using visual interpretation. Model results revealed geographic differences in biophysical correlates of vegetation change between the study areas, suggesting that terrain variation is a key factor affecting spatial-temporal patterns of vegetation change. At Jackson Glacier forefront, increases in vegetation over some portion or all of the study period were negatively associated with elevation, slope angle, and consolidated bedrock. At Grinnell Glacier forefront, increases in vegetation associated negatively with elevation and positively with solar radiation. Integrated geospatial and field approaches to the study of vegetation change in recently deglaciated terrain are recommended to understand and monitor processes and patterns of ongoing habitat change in rapidly changing mountain environments. Knowledge of the past behavior of the outlet glaciers of Southeast (SE) Greenland is necessary to understand and model spatial differences in the response of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) to climatic changes. Here we use bathymetric data to map the distribution of more than 50 major moraines in SE Greenland fjords. Inner‐fjord moraines are widespread along the SE Greenland margin, occurring in 65% of the surveyed fjords. We identify, for the first time, nine midfjord moraines that span the approximately 150‐km‐long eastern margin of the Julianehåb Ice Cap. In contrast, midfjord moraines are generally absent from the deeper and wider fjords of the SE GIS. The variable distribution of midfjord moraines along the SE Greenland margin reveals contrasting behavior of the SE GIS and the eastern Julianehåb Ice Cap during the last deglaciation, which probably reflects differences in fjord geometry and exposure to ocean heat. • The glacier area retreat rate in the Chinese Altay Mountains is 0.55% a-1 during 1990–2021. • Glaciers in the Chinese Altay Mountains experienced a more intense retreat in 2000-2009. • Solar radiation and summer temperature have important effects on glacier retreat. Melting glaciers have changed the spatial–temporal distribution of water resources in inland river basins and are one of the important inducements of extreme hydrological events. Most previous studies on glacier changes in the Chinese Altay Mountains have focused on the period 1960–2011; however, there is a lack of glacier data reflecting recent changes (1990–2021) over the past decades, and the response of glaciers to regional climate change is still unclear. In this study, Landsat images and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) were used to map glacier outlines from 1990 to 2021 for the whole region and its surrounding areas, and the impacts of temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation variation on glacier retreat were investigated. The results indicate that (1) the glacier area retreat rate of 0.55 %∙a-1 in the Chinese Altay Mountains during 1990–2021 is obviously lower than the glacier area shrinkage rate of 0.75 %∙a-1 from 1960 to 2009, and the retreat rate of glacier volume is 0.60 %∙a-1. (2) More than 80 % of the total glacier area located at elevation ranged from 2600 to 3400 m, and the greatest glacier area loss occurred within the elevation range of 2800–3000 m. Although the glacier area was retreating in all orientations, the south-facing glacier has the largest retreat rate. (3) The rate of change of glacier area was −1.26 %∙a-1, −0.71 %∙a-1 and −0.51 %∙a-1 in the Haba sub-basin, Sawir Mountains region, and Burqin sub-basin, respectively. (4) Owing to the slowdown in the warming rate since 1990, the glacier shrinkage rate was moderate during 1990–2021 compared to the 1960 s–1980 s, and contribution of the increase of solar radiation (35.72 %) and summer temperature (25.3 %) to glacier retreat from 1990 to 2021 were more prominent than other climate factors. Up to now, the most widely accepted idea of the periglacial environment is that of treeless ecosystems such as the arctic or the alpine tundra, also called the tabula rasa paradigm. However, several palaeoecological studies have recently challenged this idea, that is, treeless environments in periglacial areas where all organisms would have been exterminated near the glacier formed during the Last Glacial Maximum, notably in the Scandinavian mountains. In the Alps, the issue of glacial refugia of trees remains unanswered. Advances in glacier reconstructions show that ice domes did not cover all upper massifs, but glaciers filled valleys. Here, we used fossils of plant and malacofauna from a travertine formation located in a high mountain region to demonstrate that trees (Pinus, Betula) grew with grasses during the Lateglacial- Holocene transition, while the glacier fronts were 200-300 m lower. The geothermal travertine started to accumulate more than 14,500 years ago, but became progressively more meteogene about 11,500 years ago due to a change in groundwater circulation. With trees, land snails (gastropods) associated to woody or open habitats and aquatic mollusc were also present at the onset of the current interglacial, namely the Holocene. The geothermal spring, due to warm water and soil, probably favoured woody glacial ecosystems. This new finding of early tree growth, combined with other scattered proofs of the tree presence before 11,000 years ago in the western Alps, changes our view of the tree distribution in periglacial environments, supporting the notion of tree refugia on nunataks in an ocean of glaciers. Therefore, the tabula rasa paradigm must be revisited because it has important consequences on the global changes, including postglacial plant migrations and biogeochemical cycles. Public understanding of climate change is imperative as communities face the consequences of a warming planet. While the vast majority of the scientific community agrees upon the causes and projections of climate change, public and political debates indicate far less public acceptance. This investigation examined whether an earlier proposal of climate change in the history of science could facilitate climate literacy in modern climate discussions. Louis Agassiz's 1837 glacial theory proposal was received with initial skepticism, heavily debated, and eventually accepted by the majority of the scientific community 30-40 yr later. In this research, students (n = 24) in an online Earth history course participated in a six unit climate change discussion, with one unit focused upon Agassiz's proposal of glacial theory. Although pre- and post-Climate Change Survey comparisons (n = 21) documented no significant change in climate change content, the students' incoming knowledge was significantly greater when compared with their colleagues in previous years. Content analysis of students' online discussions documented that students addressed most understandings of the nature of science matrix, while content analysis of students' anonymous survey responses (n = 22) revealed three stable themes, including the benefits of the history of science for providing context for developing theories, facilitating broader understanding of the nature of science, and providing historical episodes that directly relate to modern debates. While students affirmed the importance of the historical climate change episode within their climate discussions, more research is needed to elucidate whether the history can also result in improved climate literacy. Well-dated and highly resolved paleoclimate records from high latitudes allow for a better understanding of past climate change. Lake sediments are excellent archives of environmental change, and can record processes occurring within the catchment, such as the growth or demise of an upstream glacier. Here we present a Holocene-length, multi-proxy lake sediment record from proglacial lake Gjøavatnet on the island of Amsterdamøya, northwest Svalbard. Today, Gjøavatnet receives meltwater from the Annabreen glacier and contains a record of changes in glacier activity linked to regional climate conditions. We measured changes in organic matter content, dry bulk density, bulk carbon isotopes, elemental concentrations via Itrax core-scanning, and diatom community composition to reconstruct variability in glacier extent back through time. Our reconstruction indicates that glacially derived sedimentation in the lake decreased markedly at ∼11.1 cal kyr BP, although a glacier likely persisted in the catchment until ∼8.4 cal kyr BP. During the mid-Holocene (∼8.4–1.0 cal kyr BP) there was significantly limited glacial influence in the catchment and enhanced deposition of organic-rich sediment in the lake. The deposition of organic rich sediments during this time was interrupted by at least three multi-centennial intervals of reduced organic matter accumulation (∼5.9–5.0, 2.7–2.0, and 1.7–1.5 cal kyr BP). Considering our chronological information and a sedimentological comparison with intervals of enhanced glacier input, we interpret these intervals not as glacial advances, but rather as cold/dry episodes that inhibited organic matter production in the lake and surrounding catchment. Numerical glacier models applied to moraine chronologies provide an opportunity to quantify past climate change. Here we apply a two-dimensional coupled mass balance – ice flow model to well-dated moraine sequences deposited by former alpine glaciers at two central Patagonian sites: Cerro Riñón (43.97°S, 71.64°W) and Río Tranquilo (47.50°S, 72.38°W), to reconstruct the local temperatures during both the Antarctic Cold Reversal (14.7–13 ka) and the Younger Dryas (12.9–11 ka). Modelled temperature anomalies during the Antarctic Cold Reversal are −2.6 ± 0.4 °C at 44°S, and −2.9 ± 0.6 °C at 47°S. At both locations this cold event is followed by temperature increases of +0.6–0.7 °C or precipitation reductions of c. 20% to drive glacier retreat to moraines deposited during Younger Dryas time. The consistent climatic anomalies between these two latitudes suggest this region of Patagonia was responding to a common climatic event. Further, the late-glacial temperature anomalies found here compare well to those determined by similar glacier modelling techniques in New Zealand, at 43–44° S. Glaciers offer the potential to reconstruct past climate over timescales from decades to millennia. They are found on nearly every continent, and at the Last Glacial Maximum, glaciers were larger in all regions on Earth. The physics of glacier-climate interaction are relatively well understood, and glacier models can be used to reconstruct past climate from geological evidence of past glacier extent. This can lead to significant insights regarding past, present, and future climate. For example, glacier modeling has demonstrated that the near-ubiquitous global pattern of glacier retreat during the last few centuries resulted from a global-scale climate warming of ∼1°C, consistent with instrumental data and climate proxy records. Climate reconstructions from glaciers have also demonstrated that the tropics were colder at the Last Glacial Maximum than was originally inferred from sea surface temperature reconstructions. Glacial changes during the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the Himalayan Mountains are important for understanding changes in the monsoonal and westerly climate of the so-called ‘the Third Pole’. However, knowledge of these changes and their dynamics remains limited because of the region's geographical inaccessibility, in addition to geopolitical reasons. In this study, we used high resolution three-dimensional images from Google Earth to identify lateral and terminal moraines as delineators of paleoglacier boundaries, and mapped the boundaries of both modern and LIA glaciers. ArcGIS 9.3 software was applied to map data and to calculate glacier lengths and areas; modern glacier surface elevation data were derived from SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) records. Three methods, the toe-to-headwall altitude ratio (THAR), the toe-to-summit altitude method (TSAM), and the toe-to-ridge altitude method (TRAM) were used to estimate equilibrium line altitude (ELA). The transient snowlines (TSL) of ninety-one modern glaciers were acquired using Landsat 8 OLI images in late summer to evaluate the reliability of the calculated ELAs. Our results showed that the total length and total area of two hundred and twenty glaciers in the central and western Himalaya (CWH) had decreased respectively by 35% and 31% since the LIA. The TRAM method was the preferred method for the reconstruction of ELAs. The mean depression of ELAs from the LIA to the first decade of the 21st Century, as reconstructed using the TRAM method, was 123 m. The ELA depression and rate of change of glacier length and glacier area displayed generally increasing trends from west to east along the central and western Himalaya, suggesting that the moisture was most likely transported from an easterly direction. These changes were more intensive on southern than northern slopes, suggesting that southerly and westerly precipitation likely increased over the same period. We speculated that the CWH had been influenced by both the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) and Westerlies since the LIA. ISM moisture, as in modern times, was the main factor controlling the distribution of glaciers during the LIA. This study is concerned with numerical simulation of the strain due to glaciation and glacial melting, when a magma zone (a layer containing inclusions of magma and magma cumulates) is present at the crust-mantle boundary. According to analytical solutions of this problem that involves viscous relaxation of an uncompensated depression at the place of the molten glacier, the depth to the zone of increased shear stresses beneath the depression is proportional to its width, while the relaxation duration is proportional to viscosity of the lithosphere and is a few thousand years. These fundamental estimates are corroborated by our numerical simulation. According to it, the magma zone at the Moho boundary shields the zone of increased shear stresses, limiting it from below. The maximum values (12-25 MPa) with glacial thickness 500-1000 m are reached at the top of this layer of low viscosity. The directions of maximum compression (s) as calculated for the time after the melting indicate that the magma that rises along dikes is displaced from the center of the magma lens toward its periphery. It is found that glacial unloading makes the dipping faults in the crust above the low-viscosity layer attractors for the rising magma. Glacial unloading accelerates, by factors of a few times, the magma generation in the mantle that occurs following the mechanism of adiabatic decompression, as well as facilitating the accumulation of mantle fluids in the zone of increased shear stresses at the boundary of the low viscosity layer. The magma traverses this deep fluid collector and increases the intensity and explosivity of eruptions at the beginning of an interglacial period. Our numerical simulation results are in general agreement with published data on Early Holocene volcanic eruptions that occurred after the second phase of the Late Pleistocene glaciation in Kamchatka. Improvements in understanding glacial extents and chronologies for the southeastern slope of the western Nyaiqentanglha Shan on the Tibetan Plateau are required to understand regional climate changes during the Last Glacial cycle. A two-dimensional numerical model of mass balance, based on snow–ice melting factors, and of ice flow for mountain glaciers is used to assess the glacier sensitivity to climatic change in a catchment of the region. The model can reproduce valley glaciers, wide-tongued glaciers and a coalescing glacier within step temperature lowering and precipitation increasing experiments. The model sensitivity experiments also indicate that the dependence of glacier growth on temperature and/or precipitation is nonlinear. The model results suggest that the valley glaciers respond more sensitively to an imposed climate change than wide-tongued and coalescing glaciers. Guided by field geological evidence of former glacier extent and other independent paleoclimate reconstructions, the model is also used to constrain the most realistic multi-year mean temperatures to be 2.9–4.6°C and 1.8–2.5°C lower than present in the glacial stages of the Last Glacial Maximum and middle marine oxygen isotope stage 3, respectively. Two enhanced temperature-index (T-index) models are proposed by incorporating meteorological parameters viz. relative humidity, wind speed and net radiation. The models are an attempt to explore different climatic variables other than temperature affecting glacier surface melting. Weather data were recorded at Chorabari Glacier using an automatic weather station during the summers of 2010 (July 10 to September 10) and 2012 (June 10 to October 25). The modelled surface melt is validated against the measured point surface melting at the snout. Performance of the developed models is evaluated by comparing with basic temperature-index model and is quantified through different efficiency criteria. The results suggest that proposed models yield considerable improvement in surface melt simulation . Consequently, the study reveals that glacier surface melt depends not only on temperature but also on weather parameters viz. relative humidity, wind speed and net radiation play a significant role in glacier surface melting. Rapid shrinkage and dramatic volume loss of the glaciers on Mt. Bogda in the eastern Tianshan Mountains have resulted in water shortages in the surrounding arid regions of China. Understanding ice thickness and its variation is important to the analysis of changes in glacial volume, which are directly related to regional hydrology and water resources. Fan-shaped Diffluence Glacier and Heigou Glacier No. 8 are located on the northern and southern slopes of Mt. Bogda, respectively. In this paper, the spatial distribution of the ice thickness of these two glaciers and the changes in their area and volume are discussed based on a 2009 survey result and comparison to previous investigations. The mean ice thickness of the tongue of Fan-shaped Diffluence Glacier was about 82.3 m and the calculated ice volume was 385.2 × 10 6 m 3 in 2009. It had thinned by 14 ± 8 m (0.30 ± 0.17 m a − 1 ) from 1962 to 2009, equivalent to an ice volume loss of 65.5 ± 37.4 × 10 6 m 3 . The mean ice thickness of the tongue of Heigou Glacier No. 8 was 58.7 m and the calculated ice volume was 115.1 × 10 6 m 3 in 2009. The tongue of Heigou Glacier No. 8 thinned by 13 ± 6 m (0.57 ± 0.26 m a − 1 ) from 1986 to 2009, which corresponds to an ice volume loss of 25.5 ± 11.8 × 10 6 m 3 . The greater thinning and retreat of Heigou Glacier No. 8 than those of Fan-shaped Diffluence Glacier is partially due to topographic characteristics. Modeling studies have shown that the continental-scale ice sheets in North America and Eurasia in the last glacial cycle had a large influence on the atmospheric circulation and thus yielded a climate distinctly different from the present. However, to what extent the two ice sheets influenced each others' growth trajectories remains largely unexplored. In this study we investigate how an ice sheet in North America influences the downstream evolution of the Eurasian ice sheet, using a thermomechanical ice-sheet model forced by climate data from atmospheric snapshot experiments of three distinctly different phases of the last glacial cycle: the Marine Isotope Stages 5b, 4, and 2 (Last Glacial Maximum - LGM). Owing to the large uncertainty associated with glacial changes in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, each atmospheric snapshot experiment was conducted using two distinctly different ocean heat transport representations. Our results suggest that changes in the North American paleo-topography may have largely controlled the zonal distribution of the Eurasian ice sheet. In the MIS4 and LGM experiments, the Eurasian ice sheet migrates westward towards the Atlantic sector - largely consistent with geological data and contemporary ice-sheet reconstructions - due to a low wave number stationary wave response, which yields a cooling in Europe and a warming in northeastern Siberia. The expansion of the North American ice sheet between MIS4 and the LGM amplifies the Siberian warm anomaly, which limits the glaciation there and may therefore help explain the progressive westward migration of the Eurasian ice sheet in this time period. The ocean heat transport only has a small influence on the stationary wave response to the North American glacial topography; however, because temperature anomalies have a smaller influence on an ice sheet's ablation in a colder climate than in a warmer one, the impact of the North American glacial topography on the Eurasian ice-sheet evolution is reduced for colder surface conditions in the North Atlantic. While the Eurasian ice sheet in the MIS4 and the LGM experiments appears to be in equilibrium with the simulated climate conditions, the MIS5b climate forcing is too warm to grow an ice sheet in Eurasia. ABSTRACT The local last glacial maximum (LGML) on Dalijia Shan occurred during mid-marine isotope stage 3 (MIS3), which is consistent with some Tibetan Plateau records, but asynchronous with the MIS2 global Last Glacial Maximum (LGMG). Paleoclimatic reconstructions are key to advancing understanding such spatial and temporal patterns of paleoglaciation. Using multiple methods we reconstructed mid-MIS3 equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) on Dalijia Shan and inferred temperature depressions. Geomorphic ELA reconstructions combined with empirical data on current ELA temperature and precipitation yield a mid-MIS3 ELA of 4000 ± 78 m a.s.l. (618-851 m lower than current, and a temperature depression of 3.3-6.8 °C). Independent glacial modeling using the degree-day approach suggests a mid-MIS3 ELA between 3971 and 4024 m a.s.l. and a temperature depression of 4.2-5.6 °C. The consistency of these results indicate that mid-MIS3 temperature depressions in the Dalijia Shan region were 3.3-6.8 °C, which is less than the LGMG temperature depression inferred from regional climatic proxy data. Combined with other proxy data, this suggests that the LGML glacial advance in Dalijia Shan resulted from lower temperatures and slightly reduced precipitation compared with present, whereas the LGMG advance was more restricted because much colder conditions were combined with much lower precipitation. This research provides a feasibility study on the implementation and performance assessment of time-lapse processing of a monoscopic image sequence, acquired by a calibrated camera in the Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina. The glacier is located at 50° 28' 23"S, 73° 02' 10"W at the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, South Patagonia Icefield, Santa Cruz and has experienced minor fluctuations and unusual behavior since the early 1960's to present. The objective of this study was to determine the evolution and changes in the ice-dam of the Perito Moreno glacier that started on November, 23 2012 and collapsed on January 19, 2013. Two images every 24 hours were acquired since October 2012 until February 2013, a total of 135 days. Image information was supported by ground data. Image and ground data was correlated with a 2D affine transformation. This technique allows the determination of the distortions in the images and estimating the values of scale factors. This, along with an accurate time-lapse interval, has produced accurate data for the analysis. In addition, changes in the level of the Brazo Rico lake were validated with direct data in order to determine the degree of uncertainty in the estimation of changes in the glacier. Based on the calculations, advance rates of the front of the Perito Moreno glacier were estimated at 0.67m/d ±0.003m, and the tunnel evolution was also recorded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Topics discussed include characteristics of glaciation at several main glaciation centers and specified the terminal point positions including Big Taldura, Alakha and Sofiiskii; spatial structure of Alatai Glaciation; and evolution of concrete areas of glaciation in the ranges and their fractions.

• Pir Panjal Range, an active mountain, has been home to large glaciers in the past. • Cirques are the dominant glacial geomorphic features present in the range. • Morphometry helps to identify the plausible causes of varied cirque geometry. • NE-facing cirques are the best developed in the Pir Panjal Range. Cirques are prominent features of alpine glacial landscapes, and they often form as a result of the glacial climate and follow the general aspect of the mountain ranges on which these develop. The role of controlling factors on the development of 143 cirques located in the Pir Panjal Range (PPR), NW Himalaya was investigated using morphometric analyses. The PPR, trending SE to NW, is of Pliocene to Quaternary age and largely deglaciated, except a few small debris-covered cirque glaciers. The role played by glaciers in sculpting the geomorphology of the PPR is evident from the presence of various erosional and depositional glacial landforms. The NE-, NW-, SW- and SE-oriented cirques account for ∼44%, ∼35%, ∼16% and 5% of the cirques investigated, respectively. In comparison to the NW cirques, the NE-oriented cirques are deeper, longer and more circular. Regardless of the dominant aspect or slope of the mountain range the trend of geological structures can influence the direction of erosion and define the shape and direction of cirque development. The cirque morphometry analyses described in this research back up the combined influence of climate and topography, on cirque development in the PPR. The study, which is first of its kind in the Himalaya, adds to the body of knowledge about uplift-driven climate change and explains the topographic and glacial geomorphic evolution in the PPR. The hydrological conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum in the Eastern Mediterranean have long been debated. In particular, very little is known about the development of high-altitude glaciers in this region. In the present study, morphological and sedimentological evidence, such as U-shape valleys, glacial cirques, and morainic ridges, are used to identify past glaciers on the western slopes of Mount Lebanon, which is by far the highest topography along the eastern Mediterranean coast (3088 m a.s.l.). The geometry of three paleo-glaciers is reconstructed: one 8-km-long glacial tongue stretching from the highest peak down to an elevation of about 2000 m a.s.l., and two small glacial cirques located at about 2300 m a.s.l. The age of maximum glacier advance is constrained from a 10-m-deep 36Cl depth-profile within the diamicton of one terminal moraine, and yields an early LGM timing (between 25.4 ± 3.1 ka and 31.2 ± 4.5 ka), which agrees with the chronology of the last maximum glacier extension in the Eastern Mediterranean. The three glaciers together form a consistent group, compatible with an Equilibrium Line Altitude (ELA) at 2400 m estimated using the Accumulation Area Ratio method. A degree-day model is further used to infer the temperature and precipitation conditions required to depress the LGM ELA to 2400 m. Our results suggest that the observed glacier extent is compatible with early LGM paleo-temperature records of the area only under the condition of decreased precipitation relative to modern times. Globally, glacial and paraglacial environments in mountains are vulnerable to the effects of ongoing contemporary climate change (global warming), but monitoring of such systems today provides only a limited spatial and temporal viewpoint of their likely evolution over coming decades to centuries. This is because these environments show complex and nonlinear responses to forcing and are affected by time lags, feedbacks and antecedent factors, including geologic control and geologic history that present monitoring of these systems cannot capture. In order to evaluate how glacial and paraglacial environments in mountains are likely to respond to future climate change, we consider how these environments have responded to climate change in the past (the last glacial-interglacial transition, and the Little Ice Age). From this, we may anticipate the likely responses of glacial and paraglacial environments in mountains to global warming over coming decades. We show that future changes in glacial and paraglacial environments, in particular in glaciated regions in continental interiors, have downstream implications for the biosphere (including biodiversity and ecosystem services, sustainable agriculture and water resources), the human environment (including cultural and heritage landscapes and social/economic activities), and for policy and planning. Little Ice Age (LIA) austral summer temperature anomalies were derived from palaeoequilibrium line altitudes at 22 cirque glacier sites across the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Modern analog seasons with temperature anomalies akin to the LIA reconstructions were selected, and then applied in a sampling of high-resolution gridded New Zealand climate data and global reanalysis data to generate LIA climate composites at local, regional and hemispheric scales. The composite anomaly patterns assist in improving our understanding of atmospheric circulation contributions to the LIA climate state, allow an interrogation of synoptic type frequency changes for the LIA relative to present, and provide a hemispheric context of the past conditions in New Zealand. An LIA summer temperature anomaly of −0.56 °C (±0.29 °C) for the Southern Alps based on palaeo-equilibrium lines compares well with local tree-ring reconstructions of austral summer temperature. Reconstructed geopotential height at 1,000 hPa (z1000) suggests enhanced southwesterly flow across New Zealand occurred during the LIA to generate the terrestrial temperature anomalies. The mean atmospheric circulation pattern for summer resulted from a crucial reduction of the 'HSE'-blocking synoptic type (highs over and to the west of NZ; largely settled conditions) and increases in both the 'T'- and 'SW'-trough synoptic types (lows passing over NZ; enhanced southerly and southwesterly flow) relative to normal. Associated land-based temperature and precipitation anomalies suggest both colder- and wetter-than-normal conditions were a pervasive component of the base climate state across New Zealand during the LIA, as were colder-than-normal Tasman Sea surface temperatures. Proxy temperature and circulation evidence were used to corroborate the spatially heterogeneous Southern Hemisphere composite z1000 and sea surface temperature patterns generated in this study. A comparison of the composites to climate mode archetypes suggests LIA summer climate and atmospheric circulation over New Zealand was driven by increased frequency of weak El Niño-Modoki in the tropical Pacific and negative Southern Annular Mode activity. Changes in the supply of water and sediment to high-latitude rivers related to contemporary climate change and glacier fluctuations largely determine the activity of fluvial processes. This study reconstructs fluvial dynamics since the end of the Little Ice Age ( LIA) in two small, partially glaciated basins in the southern part of Spitsbergen, Svalbard Archipelago. We use a combination of aerial photograph interpretation, field mapping and dendrochronological analysis. Sequences of abandoned channels and glacifluvial terraces are distinctly visible in middle and lower parts of the Brattegg and Arie basins in this area. The advance of glaciers during the LIA in the upper part of the basins led to the development of a braiding pattern and to channel aggradation corresponding to the highest glacifluvial levels. The decreasing activity of these braidplains occurred at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, immediately prior to a significant incision period. A second generation of braided channels developed during the first half of the 20th century. Ice-marginal lake development, less input of fine-grained sediment to the river channel, and fast incision began from the second half of the 20th century onward. During the last two decades, the main fluvial response to the climatic warming has been contraction of flow within a narrower channel and the abandonment of braidplains. The increased lateral erosion and rate of downcutting and the formation of the most downstream reaches of the modern valley bottom occurred in the 1980s and 1990s. This process was intensified under flood conditions generated by extreme rainfall events. These micro-scale (small partially glaciated basins) observations concerning the changes of the activity of fluvial processes since the end of LIA may be helpful for the reconstruction of past fluvial changes over longer time scales. Abstract: This review summarises landform records and published age-estimates (largely based upon tephrochronology) to provide an overview of glacier fluctuations upon the Kamchatka Peninsula during the Holocene and, to a lesser degree, earlier phases of glaciation. The evidence suggests that following deglaciation from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the peninsula experienced numerous phases of small-scale glacial advance. During the Late Glacial, moraine sequences appear to reflect the former presence of extensive glaciers in some parts of the peninsula, though little chronological control is available for deposits of this period. During the Holocene, the earliest and most extensive phase of advance likely occurred sometime prior to c. 6.8ka, when glaciers extended up to 8km beyond their current margins. However, these deposits lack maximum age constrains, and pre-Holocene ages cannot be discounted. Between c. 6.8ka and the onset of ‘Neoglaciation’ c. 4.5ka, there is little evidence of glacial advance upon the peninsula, and this period likely coincides with the Holocene climatic optimum (or ‘hypsithermal’). Since c. 4.5ka, numerous moraines have been deposited, likely reflecting a series of progressively less extensive phases of ice advance during the Late Holocene. The final stage of notable ice advance occurred during the Little Ice Age (LIA), between c. 1350 and 1850 C.E., when reduced summer insolation in the Northern Hemisphere likely coincided with solar activity minima and several strong tropical volcanic eruptions to induce widespread cooling. Following the LIA, glaciers upon the peninsula have generally shown a pattern of retreat, with accelerated mass loss in recent decades. However, a number of prominent climatically and non-climatically controlled glacial advances have also occurred during this period. In general, there is evidence to suggest that millennial scale patterns in the extent and timing of glaciation upon the peninsula (encompassing much of the last glacial period) are governed by the extent of ice sheets in North America. Millennial-to-centennial scale fluctuations of Kamchatkan glaciers (encompassing much of the Holocene) are governed by the location and relative intensity of the Aleutian Low and Siberian High pressure systems. Decadal scale variations in glacier extent and mass balance (particularly since the LIA) are governed by inter-decadal climatic variability over the North Pacific (as reflected by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation), alongside a broader trend of hemispheric warming. Abstract: Fully understanding the timing and climate of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is still lack in the head of the Tashkurgan Valley, northwest Tibetan Plateau (TP). The recent improvements in cosmogenic 10Be exposure dating and glacier modeling present an opportunity to estimate the LGM climatic conditions. In the paper, we investigated the moraines and used the 10Be exposure dating on the moraine boulders to constrain the timing of the LGM, the Kuzigun glacial stage in the head of the Tashkurgan Valley. Then, we used a coupled mass-balance and ice-flow model to quantify the paleoclimate from past glacier extents constrained by mapped and dated Kuzigun glacial moraines in the area. We showed that the glaciers terminated at an elevation of 4100–4200 m asl during the Kuzigun glacial stage and the glacial stage occurred during or slightly before 15–23 ka, corresponding to the timing of the global LGM. The modeled mass balances indicated that present-day equilibrium line altitude (ELA) ranges from 5150 to 5250 m asl, and LGM ELA is between 4550 and 4600 m asl in the area, suggesting an ELA lowering of ∼600 m during the LGM. Model results suggested that the temperature during the LGM in the head of the Tashkurgan Valley is 5–8 °C colder than today, considering a 30–70% reduction in precipitation compared to today. ABSTRACT Marked changes in sediment types deposited in Cabin Lake, near Cordova, Alaska, represent environmental shifts during the early and late Holocene, including fluctuations in the terminal position of Sheridan Glacier. Cabin Lake is situated to receive meltwater during periods when the outwash plain of the advancing Sheridan Glacier had aggraded. A brief early Holocene advance from 11.2 to 11.0 cal ka is represented by glacial rock flour near the base of the sediment core. Non-glacial lake conditions were restored for about 1000 years before the water level in Cabin Lake lowered and the core site became a fen. The fen indicates drier-than-present conditions leading up to the Holocene thermal maximum. An unconformity spanning 5400 years during the mid-Holocene is overlain by peat until 1110 CE when meltwater from Sheridan Glacier returned to the basin. Three intervals of an advanced Sheridan Glacier are recorded in the Cabin Lake sediments during the late Holocene: 1110-1180, 1260-1540 and 1610-1780 CE. The sedimentary sequence also contains the first five reported tephra deposits from the Copper River delta region, and their geochemical signatures suggest that the sources are the Cook Inlet volcanoes Redoubt, Augustine and Crater Peak, and possibly Mt Churchill in the Wrangell Volcanic field. We investigate here recent (1980-2009) climate variability in the upper Karakoram, Northern Pakistan, of particular interest given the peculiar glacier behavior during the last two decades. Differently from other glacierized regions in the Hindu Kush-Karakoram-Himalaya region, glaciers in the Karakoram display limited ice thinning, and in some cases advancing has been detected. Climate analysis is required to describe recent (i.e., last three decades) variability, to aid highlighting of the factors driving glacier evolution. Starting from monthly data, we analyze seasonal values of total precipitation, number of wet days, maximum ( max) and minimum ( min) air temperature, max precipitation in 24 h, and cloud cover for 17 weather stations in the upper Karakoram, clustered within three climatic regions as per use of principal components analysis. We detect possible nonstationarity in each of these regions by way of (1) linear regression, (2) moving window average, and (3) Mann-Kendall test, also in progressive form, to detect the onset date of possible trends. We then evaluate linear correlation coefficients between Northern Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index and climate variables to assess effectiveness of teleconnections, claimed recently to affect climate in this area. Also, we compare temperature within the investigated zone against global temperature anomalies, to evidence enhanced warming within this area. We found mostly nonsignificant changes of total precipitation, unless for few stations displaying increase in Chitral-Hindu Kush region and Northwest Karakoram, or Gilgit area, and decrease in Western Himalaya, Kotli region. Max precipitation is mostly unchanged, unless for slight increase in Chitral and Gilgit areas, and slight decrease in Kotli region. Number of wet days is mostly increasing in Gilgit area, and decreasing in Chitral area, with no clear signal in Kotli region. Min temperatures increase always but during Summer, when decreasing values are detected, especially for Gilgit and Chitral regions. Max temperatures are found to increase everywhere. Cloud cover is significantly increasing in Gilgit area, but decreasing otherwise, especially in Kotli region. Max temperature regime is significantly positively correlated against global thermal anomaly, while min temperature regime is nonsignificantly negatively correlated. Max and min temperatures seem mostly negatively correlated to NAO. Some dependence of trend intensity for the considered variables against altitude is found, different for each region, suggesting that investigation of weather variables at the highest altitudes is warranted to discriminate further climate variability in the area. Optical stimulated luminescence chronology obtained on moraines suggests that the Nubra valley was extensively glaciated during the Last Glacial Maximum. We attribute this to the enhanced moisture contribution from the mid-latitude westerlies. Our study negates the suggestion that glaciation in Ladakh and Nubra valley was non-existent due to the weak summer monsoon during the Last Glacial Maximum. Abstract: Results from cryogenic column experiments are compared with the geochemical data collected in the Canadian and Fennoscandian Shields over the past 25years to investigate the relative influence of the glacial–interglacial cycle; specifically, the impact of continental glaciers, permafrost, and methane hydrate, on the evolution of groundwater from crystalline shield environments. Several different geochemical indicators of freezing processes (either glacial or permafrost-related) were utilized: comparisons of Na/Cl and Br/Cl ratios, δ18O and δ2H values, and δ18O values and Cl− concentration. During freezing, fluids with different dominant cations follow distinctly different linear trends when Na/Cl and Br/Cl ratios are compared. Significantly, none of the freezing trends follows the trend hypothesized by for the evolution of seawater chemistry during freezing. Intrusion of glacial meltwater and in situ freezing (i.e., permafrost formation) result in a similar end-member when comparing δ18O values and Cl− concentration. The geochemical influence of a freezing process on fresh, brackish, and some saline fluids was identified at some, but not all Canadian Shield sites, regardless of site location with respect to modern-day permafrost. Appreciably, physical and geochemical data do not support the formation of brines through any freezing process in the Canadian and Fennoscandian Shields, as hypothesized by . Rather, on all diagnostic freezing plots, brines are an end-member, indicating a different evolutionary pathway. Significant depletions in 18O with respect to modern precipitation, an indication of either glacial meltwater or a freezing process, were identified at depths of up to 1km at some sites in the Canadian Shield, and to shallower depths in the Fennoscandian Shield. The potential of this fluid to reach such depths could be attributable to artificial gradients and mixing, glacial recharge, permafrost or paleo-permafrost formation, or methane hydrate or paleo-methane hydrate formation. Stream surface albedo was measured at a location downstream of Place Glacier, Canada, in a steep bouldery channel. Portions of the water surface were visibly aerated as a result of the cascading flow even at lower discharges; at high flows, the stream was near-continuous whitewater. Albedo generally increased with discharge, from around 0.1 at the lower flows to 0.4 at the highest flows. This increase is consistent with the known effect of aeration on the reflectance of water. This discharge dependence of albedo needs to be accounted for in physically based models for predicting stream temperature to avoid biased predictions of net radiation. For steep proglacial streams that experience decreasing late-summer flows as a result of ongoing and future glacier recession, the associated decrease in albedo could promote higher stream temperatures, in addition to the effects of reduced flow depth and velocity. The article explores the improvements to shear-deformational (SD) flow models of glacier dynamics through the introduction of a longitudinal stress (L-) factor. The study illustrates the role of longitudinal stress gradients in the englacial velocity field, evolution of glacier geometry and ice rheology. A test of the usefulness of L-factor for more complicated basal topography showed that it helps SD model to compensate for under-predicted ice volume considering a fixed climate and sharply bended bedrock. Simulations of glacier response to climate forcing also revealed ice volume gain and improved flat surface velocity profiles of Haig Glacier on the Canadian Rockies through the introduction of the L-factor.

Results of research into climate and glacier dynamics in the Altai Mountains (Russia) over the period of instrumental observations (1952-2008) are presented in this article. About 1030 glaciers with a total area of 805 km and volume of 42.5 km have been recorded in the Altai Region. The average summer air temperature in different regions of the Altai has increased during the study period from about 0.2°C (Aktru) to 1.1°C (Akkem). The annual atmospheric precipitation rate has also increased, by 8-10%. Since 1952, the glacier area in different regions of the Altai has decreased by 9-27%, and volume by 12-24%. Detailed geomorphological mapping of the Beinn Dearg massif, northern Scotland, was conducted to examine the maximum (Younger Dryas) extent, and earlier interstadial evolution, of an icecap that existed during the Lateglacial period (14.7-11.7 cal. ka BP). Landform evidence indicates a plateau icecap configuration during the Younger Dryas. The interpreted age is supported by new cosmogenic exposure ages and previously reported interstadial sediments beyond the icecap margin. The reconstructed Younger Dryas Beinn Dearg icecap covered 176 km. Equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) of ∼570-580 m were calculated for the icecap as a whole. The empirically reconstructed icecap is compared with recent numerical model simulations. The two methods produce an icecap with a similar configuration; however, differences are apparent in the extent of eastern and western outlets (±1-5 km), and in the spatial variation of ELAs. Results suggest that the numerical simulation overestimates the western and underestimates the eastern icecap extent. We attempt to quantify these differences in terms of icecap mass balance and assess their possible causes. Geomorphological evidence for the pre-Younger Dryas icecap configuration indicates that the Beinn Dearg massif remained an important source during earlier deglaciation. In contrast, the neighbouring Fannich mountains acted as an 'unzipping' zone, and were ice-free on their northern side by the Allerød (Greenland Interstadial 1c to 1a). Deglaciation continued over the western Beinn Dearg plateau, with the possibility that glaciers remained in some central and eastern catchments prior to (Younger Dryas) icecap (re)growth. The article presents a study which examines the climate-mediated glacier dynamics on the Gregoriev Glacier in the Inner Tien Shan, Kyrgyzstan. The study measures the snow density and develops an energy-mass balance model to analyze the annual precipitation and summer mean temperature needed to keep the glacier in its existing state. It is found out that the glacier in the Tien Shan station maintains a near steady-state when it comes to mass supply.

Abstract: We present constraints on the chronology, palaeogeography and palaeoclimatic implications for western Europe of Middle and Late Pleistocene glaciation in the Ariège catchment, north-eastern Pyrenees. Based on 37 cosmogenic 10Be exposure ages obtained from moraines and glacially scoured bedrock exposures, we have dated six regional glacial stades. The chronology emphasises several conclusions that are new to the region: (i) in the Pyrenees, the global LGM occurred several thousands of years after the maximum ice extent of the Würmian glaciation; (ii) almost full glacier extent occurred again during the global LGM, but only in the eastern Pyrenees; (iii) valley glaciers such as in the Ariège trunk valley attained lengths of ~25km during the Oldest Dryas Stadial. The cosmogenic exposure ages additionally provide the first direct evidence of ~10km-scale fluctuations of ice-front positions during the Late Pleistocene glacial cycle, probably at the time of Marine Isotope Stage 3, as well as rare insights into Middle Pleistocene ice-margin positions. Compared with existing evidence of glacial palaeogeography in other catchments of the Pyrenan range, the data also reveal a sharp contrast in relative ice extent between the glacierized catchments of the eastern Pyrenees (Ariège, Carol–Malniu, Têt), where Würmian MIE and LGM ice fronts reached similar positions, and the rest of the range, where ice fronts at the time of the MIS 2 and global LGM palaeotemperature minima lagged far behind the Würmian MIE terminal moraines. We ascribe this non-uniform behaviour among catchments to non-uniform palaeoclimatic conditions along the strike of the Pyrenees. A range of palaeoenvironmental proxies reviewed in the literature highlight a sharp difference in sea-surface temperatures between the warmer Western Mediterranean and the cooler Bay of Biscay. The consequences of such an E–W temperature gradient on weather patterns during the global LGM are compatible with a strengthening of Mediterranean low-pressure systems (particularly the semi-permanent Balearic Low) generating greater precipitation over the eastern Pyrenees compared to Atlantic weather systems further west.
