- Abstract
Innovation has been considered a strategic theme in management, representing a greater challenge for companies. It is an important process to ensure the competitiveness of companies that directly reflects on local and regional economic development. In the case of companies in the cooperative sector, the theme of innovation is very relevant, considering the importance of participation of these companies in the development of the State. In this sense, this work aimed to analyze the perception of innovation managers in an agro-industrial cooperative located in Western Paraná, based on the evaluation of factors considered determinants for the innovation process. For the theoretical basis, concepts of innovation and innovation management were addressed, in addition to key factors for innovation management. The methodology consisted of a case study, with a descriptive quantitative approach and the application of a questionnaire to the cooperative's managers. The results of this study demonstrate that, among the determining factors of the innovation process, are: the presence of a culture of innovation and the establishment of organizational strategies, but that there are possibilities for improvements in some practices, namely: hiring specialized personnel in project management, facilitating the systematization of processes, reducing deadlines and increasing the chances of success, as well as the adoption of offensive and opportunistic innovation strategies, enabling a gain in competitiveness. BUSINESS development , *BUSINESS enterprises , *OPEN innovation , *BUSINESS expansion , *INNOVATION management - Abstract
Nowadays, the main objective of business organizations is to increase competitiveness, which is why open innovation appears as a facilitating process in business development and growth. With this in mind, the aim of this article is to recognize the willingness of companies to interact with other actors in the environment, for example universities, in order to generate collaborative processes. For this purpose, we carried out an analysis of qualitative variables by means of questionnaires to some SMEs -small and medium-sized enterprises-in the manufacturing sector in Bogotá, and to professors and researchers of Universidad Distrital. Based on the results, the study formulated an integration model that characterizes the key factors for the development of open innovation processes among the actors that were analyzed. The integration model proposed seeks to highlight the factors that may be relevant for the actors under study, so that, it is possible to clearly define the methodologies, agreements, and platforms to be used between the parties, guaranteeing the importance of the factors that were identified and assuring that there is no limit between them in the open innovation processes. The analysis allows to conclude that the implementation of this paradigm implies the establishment of trusting relationships, the will ingness of the parties, the structuring of an innovation management model, and the definition of copyrights together with clear and specific cooperation agreements. LITERATURE reviews , *OPEN innovation , *NEW product development , *INNOVATION management , *INVENTIONS - Abstract
This theoretical essay aims to investigate how Practice-Based Studies (PBS) contribute to the understanding of Open Innovation (OI). We used a literature review about these themes. We sought to reflect on the assumptions, concepts, definitions and elements that constitute the PBS and OI After studying both approaches, it was possible to verify that OI can be understood through the epistemological assumptions of PBS, considering the great diversity of possible actions involved to OI, organized by structures and surrounded by material arrangements. Possible identified practices are evidenced when considering the search for external knowledge, the interactive relationships between the agents involved, the commercialization of inventions covering the generation and acquisition of ideas, the selection and decision-making practices on the best ideas and partners for the productive arrangements and practices that occurred later, involving planning practices, new techniques, new products and new services. Purpose -- The objective was to reveal reflections on how the managers of industrial cosmetic companies deal with the challenges related to the innovation process. Design/methodology/approach -- Exploratory qualitative research. The present research uses a combination of methods: theoretical-conceptual, bibliographical survey and the multi-case study, by means of the following procedures: semi-structured interview, observation route and document analysis. Findings -- I concluded that the main challenges faced by the management of the innovation process in the small business are related to the non-development of a culture focused on innovation and not planning the capacity to decentralize. In the case of the medium sized company, the main challenge related to the innovation process is to manage, simultaneously, the growth of the company on the one hand, and the managerial practices aimed at the use of the knowledge of its team, on the other, in the process of innovation. In the case of the large company, I concluded that the challenges of maintaining the integration of the innovation process and, at the same time, the flexibility to transform the way things are done, are well orchestrated by management because there is constant discussion and shared vision, in a spirit of trust and teamwork. Research limitations/implications -- The data cannot be generalized because it is a multi-case study. Practical implications -- As soon as the challenges were identified, the assumption was confirmed that the achievement of innovation implies knowing how to integrate resources and capacities, manage periods of instability or irregularity and regularity, based on a culture focused on strategic learning, learning to learn and, systemic learning. Originality/value - This exploratory qualitative research contributes with evidences and analyzes on the management of the innovation process in three companies of different sizes, in which are revealed the managerial actions in relation to the innovation requirements that have been explored from the theoretical bases that support the integration of the learning organizational and management of innovation, and the reflections on how manifest the management of the challenges faced in each company. ENGINEERING standards , *FLIGHT schools , *PROJECT management , *MILITARY education , *PRODUCT attributes - Abstract
For some time now, the Colombian National Army Aviation School has been developing technology innovation projects without management models that respond to the characteristics of the products and the needs of the aeronautical industry. For this reason, this document presents a model for the development of technology innovation projects focused on this field, integrating good project management practices from the analysis and development of products, models, and international engineering standards for their application in future projects. This model was applied to the design of a digital test bench for the Generator Control Unit (GCU) troubleshooting tests on the Beechcraft King aircraft, where we analyzed its application in each phase of development of the project and the final result regarding time, costs, and scope. As a result, it was possible to determine that the model contributed to the correct management of the project in each phase, and ensured adequate compliance with time, and technical and quality procedures, compared to another project executed without the use of the model. The evaluation of the model also made it possible to verify the innovation of the product, which in this case had a structural approach, so it can be considered an IIP (Integrate, Innovation, Process) integrated model, allowing the generation of new knowledge and new business models in later phases of maturation and future commercialization. Purpose: The study analyzes the occurrence of learning through experience and the development of collective skills as a result of a program aimed to build a culture of innovation. Originality/value: The study contributes to the theoretical discussion about innovation as a social process of experiential learning. From the practical point of view, it shows that the deliberate application of a method and a process in the construction of the innovation culture stimulates the learning of individual and collective abilities favorable to innovation, as well as behavioral and organizational changes. Design/methodology/approach: Participant observation was used to compile the report, and an ex post facto survey based on in-depth interviews was used to evaluate the results. The analysis was based on the phenomenological semiotics with the support of Atlas.Ti® software in the process of description, reduction and interpretation, to apprehend the awareness of the subjects' experience. Findings: The following results were obtained: 1. the occurrence of collective learning by the construction of solutions based on the combination of ideas of subjects with different perspectives and abilities, and by the deliberate application of a method and a process; 2. building a new collective sense for innovation, as a constantly moving realization, requiring concrete behavioral changes, and a new look at reality. The study also pointed out that the theoretical approach that considers innovation as a social process of experiential learning contributes to the understanding of how the construction of the innovation culture takes place, and that this is part of the process of building innovation itself. Innovation management plays an important role in organizations due to the capacity to transform uncertainties into knowledge. Thus, to analyze how innovation strategy and practices adopted by the companies is a necessary step to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. The present work sought to capture the perception of the employees of a Brazilian bank in relation to the innovation management in the institution. We applied a questionnaire validated by Tidd, Bessant and Pavitt (2008) through a case study of a descriptive nature, which proposes to analyze the innovation management in five dimensions: strategy, processes, innovative organization, relationships and learning. The results of the analysis point to the need to improve management strategies and routines, as well as to expand a communication on actions related to innovation, seeking to disseminate the innovation culture in the organization. This paper examines the experience of business incubation as an innovative developmental instrument based on the recent experience of the South American countries of Brazil and Chile and the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. A qualitative research method was adopted involving a review of published reports, journal articles and relevant case studies and face-to-face semi-structured interviews with incubator managerial staff. The major findings are that there are great similarities among the incubators studied in terms of their links to universities, services offered, and funding challenges, but there is growing acceptance of incubation as a potentially valid tool for promoting business development and innovation although most incubators are at the early stage. The paper is original because the case study application to incubation in Trinidad and Tobago is new with only one related article published, and this study therefore adds value to the body of research because business incubation has been under-researched in the study area. The research is limited to the extent that the case study focuses on a comparison of selected incubator features and did not include the views of clients. The practical implications of this study is that sponsors of incubators and managers need to obtain a deeper understanding of the incubation ecosystem especially with regard to innovation-based incubators, if successful innovative businesses are to emerge. The results of the study can also be generalized over the small island developing states of the Caribbean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research of Sawhney, Wolcott and Arroniz (2006) shows that when a company wants to innovate its business, people should look at the organization in 12 dimensions called Innovation Radar. The research question used for this article was: Which dimensions of innovation capability are adopted by four companies in the auto parts industry located in Sorocaba? The aim was to identify the dimensions that comprise the construct of the capacity of innovation in this segment. The research was qualitative and exploratory. The method used was a multiple case study. The instrument for data collection was interview, secondary data and institutional data. The results obtained from this study allowed the understanding of innovation capacity and made it possible to build the conceptual theoretical structure and also to adapt the Innovation Radar to the companies' reality in the auto parts industry. In addition, the study also identified three new dimensions: people, organizational learning and quality of life at work. Finally, the study of the Innovation Radar in three companies of the auto parts industry, located in Sorocaba, permitted the identification of the sustainability axis permeating all the other radar dimensions. The decision-making process that results in installing R&D activities outside of an organisation (whether nationally or abroad) involves a number of variables that deserve a more detailed analysis of their specificities. This need stems from the importance that R&D activities have taken in recent years in the organisational universe, due to the potential constitution of competitive advantage. However, following the logic of rationality contained in the theory of transaction costs demonstrated by the dilemma "Make or Buy?", R&D activities were also included in the process of evaluating the feasibility and relevance of carrying out activities internally or externally. In many cases outsourcing has occurred across national borders. This article was created with the aim of analysing the specifics of the decision-making process of three multinationals that have outsourced their R&D activities to Brazil. It is hoped that a contribution to the debate on the advantages and benefits of outsourcing these activities will be made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ORGANIZATIONAL change , *INNOVATION adoption , *MANAGEMENT , *MARKETING strategy , *BUSINESS enterprises - Abstract
Due to the great relevance of innovation to the growth and development of organizations, there have been many efforts in order to develop means and tools to optimize the management of this process. Such tools vary according to the sector and production dynamics of industry. The innovation funnel is a tool designed from the observation of innovation management in companies belonging to sectors such as food, cosmetics, and other consumer goods. The funnel-based innovation management has been adopted by a number of companies, no matter if they are nationals or multinationals, headquarters or subsidiaries. Hence, it is of great interest to verify the effectiveness of the adoption of this tool, the advantages and difficulties of its use, and the differences between theory and the practical use of the funnel. Those interest points are the main focus of this work. The study was based on the case of a consumer goods organization, a subsidiary of a multinational company. From that study, it was possible to conclude that the funnel is an appropriate tool to consumer goods companies and that its practical adoption is not much divergent from the theory, being necessary only few adjustments, like the adaptation to cultural differences and managerial routines, the adoption of supporting tools, and activities to stimulate and motivate the employees.
