Saturation characteristics of water and capillary pressure are important for hydrofracturing or water flooding, which is widely adopted in dust suppression, methane displacement, and gas and coal outburst elimination. In this paper, we have studied the water saturation characteristics of coal samples with different coal ranks and their effect on capillary pressure. It was found that the isothermal adsorption of water vapor from coal samples can be divided into three processes: monolayer adsorption, multilayer adsorption, and capillary condensation. The dent isothermal adsorption model can well describe water vapor adsorption of coal samples, indicating water molecules were first adsorbed on the first‐order adsorption site of pore surfaces at low relative humidity and then on the second‐order adsorption site with increasing relative humidity. An obvious hysteresis occurred in the process of water imbibition and drainage. A capillary pressure of ~325 MPa or even larger was required to displace the water from the coal. Besides, micro‐ and mesopores play a more important role in capillary pressure. The capillary pressure of coal samples was positively correlated with wettability at lower water saturation, but it is not significant at higher capillary pressures. In recent years, coal and gas outburst disasters are still occurring and difficult to prevent, seriously endangering the safety of coal mine production. It is well known that the transporting and crushing of outburst coal is the main pathway of energy dissipation during the coal and gas outburst process. However, a consensus regarding how much gas involves in outburst and affects energy dissipation is still lacking. Quantitative study on the gas effect on migration and fragmentation characteristics of outburst coal in restricted roadway space can improve the energy model and guide the prevention and control of gas outburst. In this paper, an improved visual coal and gas outburst dynamic effect simulation experiment system was used to conduct outburst simulation experiments at different gas pressure conditions. The results showed that the movement of outburst coal in the roadway has experienced various flow patterns. In the initial stage of the outburst, under low gas pressure condition, the motion of the outburst coal was dominated by stratified flow. However, as the gas pressure increases, the initial acceleration increases, and the outburst coal mainly move forward rapidly in the form of plug flow. The average velocity at 0.3, 0.5, and 0.8 MPa gas pressure condition were 6.75, 22.22 and 35.81 m/s, respectively. Gas also has a crushing effect on outburst coal. With increasing gas pressure, the number of coal powder particles of the same mass increased significantly, and the range of the particle size distribution of the particles decreaed, and the median particle size decreased. As the gas pressure increases, the outburst intensity gradually increases, and the total energy involved in the outburst work also increases. However, the energy dissipation pathways are different. At 0.3 MPa, the energy dissipation is dominated by crushing energy, which is about six times the ejection energy. As the gas pressure increased to 0.8 MPa, the proportion of the ejection energy gradually increases to about twice that of the crushing energy. Under the experimental conditions, 2.71–13.43% of the adsorbed gas involves in the outburst (AGIO) through rapid desorption, and the proportion increases with increasing gas pressure. Outburst of coal and gas is a major hazard in underground coal mining where coal seam gas content/pressure is high. A cone‐shaped cavity is often observed in the coal seam after bursting, implying the likely mechanical structure being formed during outburst propagation. Although the mechanism for outburst initiation and propagation is very complex, mining‐induced fracturing and damage of the coal material is an essential component. This paper investigates the mechanical conditions that are essential to initiate fractures around a spherical cavity, a simplified form of the cone‐shaped outburst cavity. The cavity is assumed to be situated in an infinite isotropic homogeneous elastic body under internal gas pressure and far‐field hydrostatic compressive stresses as a further simplification for analytical investigation. The analytical conditions under which circumferential and radial fractures can initiate around the cavity are formulated, based on extensional strain criterion for fracture initiation. Low internal pressure on the cavity surface and high far‐field compression lead to circumferential fractures. In contrast, high internal pressure and low far‐field compression lead to radial fractures. Subsequent numerical simulations with FRACOD3D and FRACOD, the 3D and 2D in‐house fracture simulation codes, were carried out to investigate fracture patterns around a cavity and inclusion. The simulation results confirmed the analytical results, including fracture shapes and the size of fractured zone. These results provide a new angle to understand the complex mechanism of outbursts. Coal and gas outbursts are anthropogenic hazards that can be divided into four stages: preparation, occurrence, development, and termination. Studying the influence of gas on coal damage and energy changes during the formation of outbursts is highly important for investigating the entire hazard. In this paper, laboratory experiments were performed on samples. The energy changes and failure mechanism of coal under different gas pressures were revealed, and a seepage model was established based on compressibility and adsorption to investigate gas-induced coal damage. The results demonstrated that gas pressure caused initial damage within the coal, resulting in nonlinear deformation and strength deterioration of the coal. Gas-induced damage affected the energy evolution mechanism of coal under loading, as pressure caused the premature release of energy at the tips of internal microcracks and reduced the ability to accumulate energy. These changes increased the proportion of dissipative energy under unstable conditions. The combined acoustic emission (AE) parameters—rising angle (RA) and average frequency (AF)—were used to study the fracture mode of gas-containing coal. As the gas pressure increased from 0 to 4 MPa, the RA–AF distribution pattern changed from tensile failure to tensile–shear composite failure, with the proportion of shear cracks increasing from 0.30% to 25.44%. As the complexity of the crack network increased, the randomness of crack propagation increased, and the fracture surface roughness parameters, arithmetic mean height S a , root mean square height S q , and maximum height S z increased by 90.33%, 94.02%, and 81.70%, respectively. To study the effects of gas hydrates on the prevention and control of coal and gas protrusions, this paper reports the results of acoustic emission experiments on coal bodies containing gas hydrates with different saturation levels. The results showed that few acoustic emission events were generated in the elasticity stages of coal bodies containing gas hydrates, and the first sudden increase in the number of ringing counts generally occurred before and after the yielding point. Additionally, the acoustic emission events in the yielding stage were more active, and the cumulative number of ringing counts increased faster. The peak ringing counts appeared around the damage point, and a small number of acoustic emission events were still generated after destruction of the coal samples. The cumulative ringing counts decreased linearly with increasing saturation. The effect of saturation on the cumulative ringing counts in the elasticity stage of the gas hydrate-containing coal samples was small, but the difference between the cumulative ringing counts in the yielding stage and those in the destruction stage was larger. The total cumulative ringing counts and the cumulative ringing counts during each stage for the gas hydrate-containing coal samples decreased with increasing enclosure pressure. The energy and amplitude of the loading process were consistent with the trend for the ringing counts. Coal and gas outburst is a type of coal mine dynamic disaster with complex causes and serious consequences. In China, the number and scale of outburst disasters are among the highest in the world. It is an inevitable stage for outburst that the mechanical instability of the combination of intact coal and tectonic coal (CICTC) in strata. The dip angle of the interface has an important influence on the instability of CICTC-containing gas. To further understand the instability process of CICTC, the uncoordinated deformation of CICTC was defined. According to this, three strain conditions were delimited. The variations of stress under three strain conditions were analyzed, the expressions of additional interfacial stress were established. Then, based on the Mohr–Coulomb criterion, the strength characteristics and failure forms were analyzed. It was found that the dip angle deflects the principal stress in the interface, and the influences of additional stresses on the value of principal stress are opposite. These two reasons make the principal stress state and instability process of the combination complicated. Finally, combined with actual parameters, the instability processes of CICTC under different stress paths and buried depths were studied. It can be found that the failures of CICTC under different stress paths were concentrated appearing in the tectonic coal body, intact coal interface, and tectonic coal interface. With the increase of buried depth, the initial maximum principal stress increases and the reduction from additional stresses to the strength of intact coal interface enhances, which makes the combination damage easily and the failure form change. The research results in this paper can provide a theoretical basis to prevent and control the outburst of the combination containing gas considering the dip angle of the interface. This paper investigated the effects of gas pressure, in-situ stress, and coal strength on coal and gas outbursts (CGO) based on the laboratory CGO experimental data. Based on the hypothesis of the comprehensive of CGO, the single-factor control variable method was used to analyze and evaluate the relative outburst intensity, the characteristics of outburst holes, the distribution of pulverized coal, the drops of outburst gas pressure, and the pulverized coal density under different outbursts experimental condition. The improved CGO energy equation and instability criterion are proposed as a direction to study the occurrence of CGO as an energy evolution direction. Furthermore, the results shows that the initial outburst gas pressure was 0.45 MPa during the experimental conditions of in-situ stress was 5 MPa, and the coal strength was 0.24 MPa. The gas pressure is directly proportional to the relative outburst intensity, while the in-situ stress and coal strength are inversely proportional to the relative outburst intensity. After the CGO occurred, the outburst coal always show spallation and pulverization characteristics. The results highlight that the gas pressure plays a key role in pulverizing and throwing out the pulverized coal, and the in-situ stress mainly plays a role in destroying the coal, and the coal strength plays a resistance role during the CGO occurs. It is also found that pulverized coal particles size less than 0.28 mm can be used to represent the distribution pattern of the total weight of outburst pulverized coal particles in the different outburst interval. These results clearly illustrate that using effective methods to control gas pressure, in-situ stress, and coal strength has an important role in preventing and controlling CGO on coal mining sites. Mining-induced disturbance to stress fields can lead to many engineering disasters such as rock bursts, roadway collapses, and coal and gas outbursts. The evolution characteristic of abutment pressure during the mining process is of great significance for prevention of engineering disasters. Based on a case study of No.12526E Panel in Xieqiao coalmine of Huainan mining area in China, this paper investigated the evolution characteristic of abutment pressure during the retreat mining process. A field measurement was performed using three-dimensional (3D) pressure sensor, and the abutment pressure was continuously monitored during the mining process. The monitoring results indicate that the abutment pressure curve can be divided into strong interference area and weak interference area. Further, the evolution characteristics of abutment pressure during the retreat mining process were simulated using a 3D discrete-element program. Periodic caving characteristics of rock strata were obtained, and the major causes of stress concentration and the bearing stress inflection point were analyzed. With the periodic caving of the overlying strata, the stress inflection point appears, and fracture cracks are generated and hinder stress recovery. Finally, the detailed dynamic evolution process of the abutment pressure as well as the deformation and caving characteristics of the overlying strata of the No.12526E Panel were analyzed. Coal and gas outbursts classification has become more important than before due to the serious threat to the safety of coal production, in this paper, we proposed a novel combination model consists of feature decomposition and reconstruction, feature selection and feature extraction for classification of coal and gas outbursts. First, EMD is used to decompose the coal and gas outbursts index features into a number of different IMFS; Second, in order to find out the relevance of IMFS with regard to the features, a wrapper algorithm Boruta with the RF classifier is employed, and the IMFS which has high relevance with the feature are selected to form a new index feature, then the new obtained features construct new influencing factors that affect coal and gas outbursts; Furtherly, in order to eliminate the redundancy between the new generated features and the uncorrelation between the index features and outbursts, the LDA is used to extract the features with class differentiation. Finally, the SVM classifiers based on the optimal parameters by Bayesian optimisation algorithm is employed to evaluate the proposed feature extraction scheme. Experimental results show that the proposed comprehensive model can achieve significant performance in terms of classification accuracy and feature size compared to existing methods for coal and gas outbursts classification. Highlights: What are the main findings? The 3D stress distributions around the gob after mining are numerically calculated. What is the implication of the main finding? The propagations of hydraulic fractures in different disturbed areas caused by mining-induced stress are compared. The influence of the geological conditions that often appear in situ in hydraulic fracturing patterns in a hard roof is examined. A hard roof can cause serious issues corelated with the stability of the panel including large deformation of the roadway in the gob, rock burst, coal and gas outbursts, etc. Currently, hydraulic fracturing has ever-increasingly been used to help control these above-mentioned issues in many engineering cases. This paper presents a series of numerical simulations for hydraulic fracturing with a recently developed model to examine the weakening effect of this pre-conditioning measure on a hard roof. The results show that large deflections in the principal stress direction occur above the coal seam after mining, which can be progressively enhanced as the working face continuously advances. This further could significantly affect the hydraulic fracturing pattern and result in arc-shaped fracture propagation, especially for the hydraulic fracture in stress-descending areas. The obtained results suggest that the hydraulic fracturing operation in a hard roof is preferable in the areas close to the middle of the gob where the created fractures would be deflected more. At last, sensitivity analysis shows that geological conditions have great influence on the hydraulic fracturing pattern. Among the factors analyzed in this paper, the difference between the maximum and minimum stress has the largest influence and should be fully considered. Coal-gas outburst is a violent phenomenon of energy release and strong dynamics is generated in underground coal mining. Coal-gas outbursts are accompanied by strong coal pulverization, and the gas desorbed by pulverized coal will in turn promote the development and spread of outbursts. Quantitative study on the role desorption gas played can improve the disaster-causing mechanism of coal-gas outburst and guide the work of outburst prevention and disaster reduction. Based on established gas emission model, the gas desorption is combined with the outburst process and its dynamic characteristics in this paper. The energy contribution and outburst dynamics with desorption gas are quantitatively studied under various desorption conditions, verified by outburst experiments. The results indicate that the energy contribution of desorption gas is 15.49–58.59% for JG71 coal, 4.49–57.26% for JG82 coal. The coal pulverization in the JG82 coal seam has a great influence on the energy contribution of desorption gas. After correction of gas desorption, the energy contribution increases by ∼20%. The maximum energy release rate (MERR) of the outburst with 0.075–0.15 mm JG71 coal sample reaches is 2.87 times that of the 1–2.36 mm coal sample at 3 MPa, and even 5.72 times that of the JG82 coal sample. For the outburst experiments, the energy contribution of desorption gas is 31.97–40.06% with 1–2.36 mm coal, 50.29–52.76% with < 0.25 mm coal. This paper presents a novel quantitative study defining the role of gas desorption in outburst energy and dynamics, applicable to disaster risk assessment and an accurate method to derive the energy contribution of desorption gas in experiments is proposed. Rock and gas outbursts occur most frequently in coal mining. Gas-induced geodynamic events in dolomite are a new and unexplored phenomenon. In the last time, two outbursts of gas and dolomite have occurred in the Legnica-Głogów Copper Region in southwestern Poland, which is one of the world's largest copper ore mining regions. Gas-induced geodynamic events are dependent on the co-occurrence of two factors: rock porosity, and the presence of gas under significant pressure in the pores and crevices of the rock. This paper presents a condensed energy balance for the phenomenon of outbursts of dolomites and gases. The quantity of energy depends on the type of transformation taking place during decompression. The work produced enables first the disintegration of the rock, and then its transportation along the mine working space. This paper has focused on the estimation of the energy required to disintegrate the rock. It has been estimated that 0.38 MJ is needed for the size reduction of 1 m3 of ejected mass. Highlights: In the case of a dolomite outburst, the energy is accumulated primarily in the form of compressed gas present in the porous structure of the rock and causes the rock to disintegrate and its transport along the mine working space. Gas decompression during a gas-induced geodynamic phenomena can be between isothermal and adiabatic. Existing disintegration theories: Rittinger's, Kick's and Bond's are based consists chiefly of crushing, compression or abrasion, caused by the action of external factors. Tectonically deformed coal (TDC) is closely related to gas outbursts. Since TDC exploration is an essential objective for coalfield exploration, it is of great significance to study the petrophysical properties of TDCs and explore their differences. This study collected 17 TDCs and undeformed coal samples from the Huaibei coalfield and ultrasonically tested their petrophysical parameters, including densities, P- and S-wave velocities, and their derived petrophysical parameters (VP/VS ratio, P- and S-wave impedances). Undeformed coal and TDCs with different deformation types (brittle, shear, and plastic deformations) show significant differences in their petrophysical parameters, and cross-plot analysis can directly differentiate them. As with traditional geological methods, acoustically measured petrophysical parameters are good indicators to determine the type of coal deformation. However, the TDCs with the same deformation type have similar petrophysical parameters; it is not easy to distinguish them directly. Instead, the proposed method incorporating principal component analysis and clustering can accurately distinguish up to five classes of TDCs. Different types of tectonic deformation environments and their intensities are highly correlated with the clustering results. This paper also provides essential petrophysical parameters for undeformed coal and TDCs in the Huaibei coalfield, and these parameters can help interpret undeformed coal and TDCs using wireline logs and seismic data. The global coal industry, as an important basic industry, has strongly supported the stable and rapid development of the international economy and society. Although the level of automation in the context of coal mining has reached a very high degree, coal mine accidents such as roof collapse, side falling accidents, gas outburst potential, etc. continue to take place. In this study, coal and gas outbursts are the "biggest killer" of mine safety production. With the deepening of mining, the mine gas disaster is becoming more and more serious. From the perspective of big data, the establishment of a dynamic visualization system of gas geology integrating gas geology, gas drainage, dynamic outburst prevention, and other information can effectively improving the defects of gas disaster prevention and control in the coal industry, such as insufficient advance, lack of systematic identification methods and backward information collection methods, which is of great significance to improve the ability of gas hazard identification. Based on the precise detection of geology, structure, and gas, this paper proposes to use information technology, the Internet of things, big data analysis, and other technologies to comprehensively analyze the changes in gas occurrence and coal seam occurrence on the basis of the causes of mine gas geological outburst, fully consider the logical relationship between different factors and outburst and adopt the disciplinary advantages of grey theory, fault tree theory, BP neural network, and so on. The tree of coal and gas outburst accidents with general significance is constructed by 24 relatively independent factors. The input vector is determined as the matrix composed of eight main factors affecting and controlling outburst, including gas pressure, coal mechanical strength, comprehensive characteristic coefficient of coal fragmentation, the permeability coefficient of coal, comprehensive characteristic coefficient of coal seam bifurcation and combination, comprehensive characteristic coefficient of coal thickness and coal thickness change, fault complexity coefficients and interlayer sliding comprehensive characteristic coefficient. The geological data affecting coal and gas outbursts are analyzed and calculated scientifically so that the gas geological data can be updated in time, and the change of gas geological laws is presented dynamically, so as to guide the mine to predict the gas disaster more scientifically and reliably. Coal mines may change from non-outburst mines into coal and gas outburst mines with increasing mining depth. Therefore, scientific and rapid prediction of the coal seam outburst risk and effective prevention and control measures could ensure coal mine safety and production. This study aimed to propose a solid–gas–stress coupling model and assessed its applicability in predicting the coal seam outburst risk. Based on a large amount of outburst case data and the research results of previous scholars, coal and coal seam gas constitute the material basis of outbursts, and gas pressure is the energy source of coal seam outbursts. A solid–gas–stress coupling model was proposed, and a solid–gas–stress coupling equation was established via regression. Among the three major outburst factors, the sensitivity to the gas content during outbursts was the lowest. The causes of coal seam outbursts with a low gas content and the effect of the structure on outbursts were explained. It was theoretically revealed that the coupling of the coal firmness coefficient, gas content and gas pressure determined whether coal seams could experience outbursts. The mechanical properties of coal containing fluid are an important factor affecting the safe mining of soft coal seams. In particular, for class III–V coal, coal and gas outbursts and other dynamic phenomena are prone to occur due to the influences of gas pressure and groundwater, which seriously threaten the safety and lives of field workers. However, briquette samples are usually used in place of raw coal in laboratory tests conducted on class III–V coal samples. Whether the research conclusions for briquette and raw coal are consistent and whether briquette coal can replace raw coal in research on strength characteristics need to be further verified. In this paper, the evolution of the strength characteristics of fluid-bearing briquette coal and raw coal is studied. The strength characteristics, instability failure characteristics, and acoustic emission characteristics of raw coal and briquette coal under uniaxial and triaxial compression are analyzed in detail. In addition, the influence of the water content and pore pressure on the strength characteristics of class III–V raw coal and briquette coal is further studied. The results show that the failure characteristic of raw coal is overall brittle failure, mainly axial splitting failure, whereas that of briquette is overall ductile failure, mainly cone-shaped continuous spalling. The strength parameters of the raw coal and briquette coal improve under confining pressure, but the internal difference in the raw coal is significantly reduced. The cohesion of the raw coal sample initially increases and then decreases with increasing water content, and the internal friction angle increases with increasing water content. In addition, it is verified that the strength, cohesion, elastic modulus, and deformation modulus of the briquette decrease with increasing pore pressure under different pore pressures, but the strength difference of the class III–V coal decreases under increasing pore pressure. Based on the abovementioned results, the strength parameters of a coal body are estimated using the Hoek–Brown (H–B) criterion. Accurate and rapid prediction of the coal and gas outburst is very significant for preventing accident and protecting environment, the paper presents a novel feature selection and outburst classifier framework which can identify effective candidate features and improve the classification accuracy. First, Apriori is applied for preliminarily extracting the association rules from sample data and attribute features in coal and outburst, and it can present the effective sample data and features for outburst prediction. Second, in order to reduce the redundancy of the strong association rules obtained from Apriori, Boruta is applied for selecting all highly relevant optimal features based on the obtained strong association rules. Third, Random Forest(RF) is used to assign different weights to different features in optimal candidate features considering the importance of different features to outburst, based on the above obtained high-quality sample data and optimal features, the parameters of KNN model optimized by Bayesian Optimization(BO) is used to predict the coal and gas outburst. The experimental results show that the proposed feature selection model Apriori-Boruta can obtain significant sample data, and the proposed RF-KNN optimized classifier model can achieve higher performance in terms of the number of optimal features and prediction accuracy compared with traditional prediction models. High intensity near infrared femtosecond laser is a promising tool for three-dimensional processing of biological materials. During the processing of cells and tissues, long lasting gas bubbles randomly appeared around the laser focal point, however physicochemical and mechanical effects of the gas bubbles has not been emphasized. This paper presents characteristic behaviors of the gas bubbles and their contact effects on cell viability. High-speed imaging of the gas bubble formation with various additives in physiological medium confirms that the gas bubble consists of dissolved air, and amphipathic proteins stabilize the bubble surface. This surface protective layer inhibits interactions of gas bubbles and cell membranes. Consequently, the gas bubble contact does not cause critical effects on cell viability. On the other hands, burst of gas bubbles stimulated by an impact of femtosecond laser induced cavitation can lead to liquid jet flow that might cause serious mechanical damages on cells. Considering the coal and gas outburst phenomenon in the mining space, this paper analyzes the main characteristics of coal and gas outburst accidents, defines the outburst airflow reversal degree, and constructs a simplified topology graph of tunneling ventilation system, while the air door is not destroyed. Using the numerical simulation method, this paper elaborates on the relationship between the outburst pressure and airflow reversal degree. The results indicate that the inlet pressure increases to 264 hPa and the outlet pressure increases to 289 hPa when the outburst pressure increases from 1 hPa to 1 MPa, and the relative variation coefficient of pressure decreases from 1501.5 to 1.62 in the inlet of return airway and decreases from 2002 to 1.65 in the outlet of return airway. Furthermore, the air velocity decreases from −1.38 to −284.44 m/s in the inlet and increases from 3.10 to 297.38 m/s in the outlet. Moreover, the gas concentration of the inlet and outlet in return airway increases rapidly with the increase of outburst pressure. When the outburst pressure is greater than 0.15 MPa, the gas concentration will be over 98% in tunneling ventilation system. This paper also finds out a cubic polynomial relationship existing between the reversal degree and the outburst pressure. Small fault area in coal mine has great risk of coal and gas outburst. However, the damage effect of small faults on coal pore structure still lacks systematic research. Taking a small reverse fault under Pingmei No. 2 mine as an example, this paper collects the hanging wall coal samples within 5 m from the fault plane and the coal samples 50 m from the fault plane, where there is no fault development. The pore structure characteristics of the two coal samples were analyzed and compared by means of a scanning electron microscope, mercury injection, liquid nitrogen adsorption, and Raman spectroscopy. The test results show that compared with the coal samples without faults, the coal samples at faults form micron-scale fracture zones with constant spacing, stable occurrence, and flat two walls. The pore volume and pore specific surface area of different pore sizes increase, the pore peak of mesopore (100~1000 nm) shifts from 1000 nm to 200~400 nm, and its connectivity is enhanced. The number of micropores (<10 nm) increased significantly, and the ink bottle type pores developed. Faulting also has a certain impact on the macromolecular structure of coal, which shows that the D peak area decreases and the area of G peak increases, indicating that the order degree of macromolecular structure of coal increases. Rock burst is one of the most sophisticated and threatening problems in the process of mining activities of underground coal mines, which can evolve into phenomena such as gas outburst, violent ground pressure behavior of surrounding rock of stope roadway, and high dynamic load energy event of roof overburden fracture through the interaction between various influencing factors. This paper deeply studies the causes, consequences, and disaster mechanism of "2–2 rock burst accident" in Xinjulong coal mine, gives the network diagram of the relationship between the main influencing factors of fault type rock burst and high-energy events, establishes a mechanical model on this basis, and explores the influence and evolution law of fault influencing factors on the elastic strain energy field of surrounding rock of stope roadway. Pore structure characterization plays key role in efficient development of petroleum, natural gas and shale gas, and it also holds important place in the evaluation of gas outburst and rock weathering damage. In this paper, a high-precision, nondestructive, and repeatable method for characterizing pore size distribution of rock is proposed. By taking sandstone, marble, granite, and rock-like samples as object, capillary pressure curves derived from the transverse relaxation time and centrifugal results are acquired based on the nuclear magnetic resonance test and centrifugation test. The pore size conversion coefficients are obtained through capillary pressure curves fitting, and they are compared with the value gained by the other two methods. Results show that the pore size conversion coefficients of sandstone, marble, granite, and rock-like specimens calculated by the proposed method are 0.483 μm/ms, 0.583 μm/ms, 0.253 μm/ms, and 0.077 μm/ms, respectively. These pore size distribution curves obtained by the proposed method are quite close to curves obtained by the other two methods. One defect of this method is that it cannot obtain complete capillary pressure curves. Overall, it provides a new idea and path for characterizing pore structure accurately and repeatedly. Coal mining has to develop to deeper strata with the increasing demand for coal, which leads to frequent coal and gas outburst disasters. Especially, when there is a deformed coal in the coal seam, the outburst disasters are easier and more intense. Coal and gas outburst disasters can be promoted by the fragmentation. In order to clearly explain the reasons for the impact of fragmentation on deformed coal and gas outburst, mercury intrusion porosimetry, low-temperature liquid N2 adsorption test, and scanning electron microscope were carried out in this paper. The differences in pore characteristics of intact coal and deformed coal under different particle size conditions were analyzed from pore shapes, pore size distributions, and fractal dimensions. The damage paths of fragmentation on various kinds of pores in intact coal are as follows: macropores, mesopores, minipores, and micropores, and those on various kinds of pores in deformed coal are as follows: macropores, micropores, mesopores, and minipores. According to the fractal dimension theory and experimental results, the calculative results of fractal dimensions show that the fragmentation and tectonism reduce the surface roughness and structural complexity of macropores and mesopores and increase those of minipores and micropores in deformed coal. Finally, combined with the coupling effect of fragmentation and tectonism on pores, the reason of deformed coal with high crushing degree in fields of outburst was explained. The coalbed methane energy resources waste, environmental pollution and miner's health remain challenging problems in worldwide mining operations accompanied by coal-gas outbursts; thus, the safe and efficient yield of these resources plays a vital role in the world's energy market. The tectonic coal development is a significant geological feature of coal and gas outburst sites, and the study of coal and gas outburst mechanism should be based on more precise geological occurrence characteristics. In this paper, the geological characteristics of coal and gas outburst sites were analyzed. The failure law of coal body under the stratified occurrence of tectonic coal and raw coal seam with different thickness was studied. The mechanical equilibrium equation of non-synchronous deformation of tectonic coal and raw coal was constructed, the initiation criterion of coal and gas outburst was established based on the support body model, and a case study was carried out. The results show that with the thickness increase of the tectonic coal seam, the peak displacement of the driving face increases. The outburst start-up and development of coal and gas outburst, coal and gas extrusion outburst and coal and gas collapse outburst were deeply analyzed, as well as the internal reasons of the occurrence of coal-gas outburst portent are explained, based on the support body model. Confining pressure is closely related to the deformation and failure characteristics of gas-containing coal and is one of the key factors for gas outburst-rockburst coupled dynamic disaster. Firstly, this paper briefly summarized the triaxial compression test results of gas-containing coal under different confining pressures, including deformation and stiffness and failure and strength. Then, based on the second developed MatDEM gas-solid coupling program, the macro- and microdeformation and failure process of coal samples under different confining pressures and constant gas pressure were simulated, and the distribution of particle stress, pore stress, and crack, as well as energy conversion characteristics, was obtained. Finally, the influence mechanism of confining pressure on deformation and failure of gas-containing coal was discussed, and the occurrence conditions of coal and gas outburst, rockburst, and their coupled dynamic disasters were distinguished. The results show that the peak strength and residual strength after failure of gas-containing coal both increase approximately linearly with the increase of confining pressure, while the elastic modulus does not change much or increases continuously, which is closely related to the number of microdefects in the coal sample. The strengthening effect of confining pressure on rock stiffness and strength mainly comes from external support and compaction. The total number of cracks decreases with the increase of confining pressure, while the number of shear cracks increases, and the inclination angle between the formed macroscopic main crack and the horizontal plane gradually decreases. The maximum cumulative elastic energy and residual elastic energy both increase with the increase of confining pressure, which leads to the increase of the impact tendency index of coal samples. Analyzing the causes of accidents, excavating accident paths, and applying accident prevention are important tasks in safety management. Focusing on coal and gas outburst accidents, this study examined the primary accident path and conducted applied research on the reasoning of the accident case. First, combined with the obtained accident causes, a coupling analysis of the causes of coal and gas outburst accidents was conducted. Second, using the method of data mining coupled with Apriori algorithm, the coupling relationship between each cause module of the coal and gas outburst accident was obtained, and consequently, a path map of the coal and gas outburst accident was drawn. Third, a Bayesian network model for the causes of coal and gas outburst accidents was established based on the accident path map and the probability of occurrence of each cause. Finally, considering the safety concept element (SC1) as an example, the Bayesian network model was used to conduct a sensitivity analysis of accident causes. Thereafter, considering the coal and gas outburst accident of the Sanjia Coal Mine in Guizhou Province as an example, probabilistic reasoning research on the cause of the accident was conducted. The application results showed that (1) under normal conditions, there are approximately 797,280 accident paths for coal and gas outbursts. Following data mining, 188 main accident paths were found. (2) Sensitivity analysis determined 19 factors that were sensitive to safety concept elements (SC1), of which the three most sensitive factors were (i) resource management system procedures (SM7), (ii) safety policy (SM1), and (iii) safety training system procedure (SM8). 13 paths exhibited a sensitivity ≥0.5%, of which 7 exhibited strong sensitivity. (3) The absolute accuracy rate of accident cause reasoning in the Sanjia Coal Mine in Guizhou Province was 71.43%, while the relative accuracy rate was close to 100%. Thus, it was concluded that: (1) the accident path mining method proposed in this paper is feasible for main accident path mining. (2) The Bayesian network model for the causes of coal and gas outburst accidents established in this study can be practically applied for the sensitivity analysis of accident causes and exhibits high reliability in the probabilistic reasoning of accident causes. The results of this study is expected to aid in the prevention of coal and gas outburst accidents, and provide reference and help for the path mining of other accident causes and the probabilistic reasoning of accident causes. Understanding the dynamics of mild explosive activity is a fundamental tool for hazard assessment at open conduit volcanoes. This is a particularly critical task for Etna volcano. Etna is in fact characterized by frequent, mild explosive activity, punctuated by lava flows and paroxysmal events ('lava fountains'), which, because of their greater impact, have been the main target for hazard studies, whereas more frequent Strombolian activity has been overlooked. As a result, their impact and associated hazards have been never quantified, despite the extensive monitoring and surveillance activities carried out on this volcano. In this paper, we analyze video recordings of a sequence of Strombolian explosions occurring at the summit craters of Mt. Etna, in Italy, in February 2020. Data were also integrated with a petrographic analysis of collected samples, and drone surveys were performed at the same time as the video recordings. We estimate the frequency of explosions (20–12 per min); particle exit speeds (1–50 m/s), and erupted mass (100–102 kg) of those explosions. A very regular, small-scale activity (marked by a single burst of gas breaking the magma free surface into bombs and lapilli fragments) was occasionally punctuated by larger explosions, (at least one every 5 min), with a longer duration, fed by larger magma volumes, and consisting of two to three distinct pulses followed by a stationary phase. We found that the repose times between explosions follows a log logistic distribution, which is in agreement with the behavior of open vent explosive activity. The four largest explosions of the sequence were analyzed in detail: they emitted particles with median diameters (Mdphi) ranging from −10.1 to −8.8 phi, with bimodal distributions. The strong disturbance of upward mining of the short-distance multiseam results in frequent fractures in the coal seam to be mined, jeopardizing the operation safety due to the instability of the surrounding rock of the overlying stope and risks of coal and gas outburst. A lucrative alternative is the downward mining of multiseam, which wide implementation is limited by the lack of reliable data on stress evolution characteristics. In this paper, the evolution, nonlinear interaction, and superposition characteristics of mining-induced stress after multiple pressure relief in the short-distance multi-seam were investigated by the numerical simulation and physical simulation, taking the endowment and mining technology characteristics of group B short-distance multiseam in Pan'er Coal Mine in Anhui Province of China as an example. The numerical and physical models of multiple (2—5 times) mining activities in pressure relief multiseam (with five main coal layers) under downward mining are constructed and implemented with the FLAC3D software and 1 : 100 scaling, respectively. The results showed that a pressure relief arch, which bears and transfers stresses, is formed on the coal seam's roof and floor. In downward mining, the local arch expands to the long arch, which bearing capacity within the influence range of multiple mining disturbances is weak, and the arch structure is prone to instability. If a coal pillar is left in the upper coal seam after its mining, the lower coal seam mining will switch from the large-scale low-stress area under the goaf to the small-scale high-stress area of nonlinear interaction of the multiple mining stresses with the stress under the coal pillar. Due to the severity and great harm of coal and gas outbursts accidents, outbursts prediction becomes very necessary; the paper presents a hybrid prediction model of feature extraction and pattern classification for coal and gas outbursts. First, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is utilized as a preprocessing technique to decompose subseries and extract the features with different frequencies and the optimal feature components are retained; second, in order to eliminate the redundancy between the features and uncorrelation between features and outbursts, we use the fast independent component analysis (FICA) to obtain each independent component, obtaining the global information in the feature; then, the obtained features are input into linear discriminant analysis (LDA), under the guidance of class labels, then the local information in features is obtained; finally, the projected features are input into the deep extreme learning machine (DELM) classifier based on the optimal parameters by quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) for training and classification. The experimental results on the dataset of coal and gas outbursts show that compared with other models in the current prediction of coal and gas outbursts, this method has significant effect on various indicators. Tectonic coal in coal seams not only seriously restricts the development of coalbed methane (CBM), but also easily forms coal and gas outburst risk areas. Therefore, it is of great significance to effectively predict the tectonic coal in coal seams under the development scale. Currently, the prediction methods of tectonic coal include geological prediction and geophysical prediction. Due to the large scale of geological analysis and the low identifiability of geophysical response of thin coal seam, these two methods are difficult to meet the prediction requirements of tectonic coal in the development process. Therefore, this paper proposes a new method for predicting tectonic coal based on seismic–geological integrated analysis of main controlling factors. Firstly, the control factors of tectonic coal and their quantitative characterization are determined by geological analysis. Then, the characterization parameters of control factors are obtained by various seismic technologies. Finally, the main control factors are screened by grey correlation analysis, and the prediction model of tectonic coal distribution is established by using the main control factors, and applied in the Qinshui Basin. The results show that the structure, surrounding rock lithology and coal thickness are three kinds of geological factors controlling the development of tectonic coal and the control weight of each factor is different. Structure plays the most important role in controlling the development of tectonic coal, followed by coal thickness and surrounding rock lithology. The prediction error of two verification wells is less than 2%, which indicates that the method can provide effective guidance for coal structure evaluation in the process of CBM development and coal mining. In this paper, the models for outbursts are established, and according to the energy transformation during gas expansion process, three parameters of the release of gas pressure potential energy are defined and the gas dynamic characteristics of two-phase flow in the initiation stage are quantitatively studied under the four factors: initial gas pressure, particle volume fraction, particle size and outburst hole size. The gas dynamic characteristics in numerical simulations are verified by experiments. The results show that for the influence of the factors on the gas dynamic characteristics of two-phase flow, initial gas pressure >outburst hole size >particle volume fraction ≈particle size. The solid particles block the pressure potential energy release from chamber, so does the caliber. However, the maximum of pressure drop occurs when the caliber is 80% of the chamber, which explains the outbursts in mines are so violent due to the caliber smaller than the internal space. The objective of this paper is to identify the outburst danger of coal from the perspective of adsorption capacity, nitrogen adsorption experiments had been performed on six different coal samples. With cubic spline interpolation method, the amount of nitrogen adsorbed in the coal at p/p0 = 0.001, 0.01, 0.50, and 0.99 were obtained. The results show that the outburst coal has more micropores than that of non-outburst coal. When the relative pressure p/p0 is 0.001 and 0.50, six coal samples have significant differences in adsorption capacity. Using the adsorption amount of these two points as the quantitative indexes, six coal samples were classified into two types by iterative self-organizing analysis technique (ISODATA). Compared with the results of traditional classification, the results obtained by the new classification method in this paper are consistent with that. The iterative self-organizing analysis technique can be as a method to identify the risk of coal and gas outburst. The cluster center in the classification process can be dynamically optimized. The data obtained in the experiment are limited, and some experiments were needed to continuously optimize the cluster center to make it keep within a little range. This method has a deep understanding of the structure and the quantity of coal pores. Coal is an important energy resource internationally. However, accidents have severely restricted the clean and safe production of coal resources. Among such accidents, coal and gas outburst accidents are a kind of coalmine disaster with high destructive power. Previous research on coal and gas outburst accidents mainly focused on gas factors but ignored the role of human factors. This paper analyses the coal and gas outburst accidents in China from 2008 to 2018 and studies its macroscopic laws. To better understand the causes of coal and gas outbursts, this paper uses the 24modelel to analyse coal and gas accidents and suggest measures for accident prevention from the two aspects 'gas' (risk control) and 'humans' (behavioural safety). Macroscopic law research found the following: (1) March, May, July, and August are the predominant months for accidents. (2) The second to fourth hours of the working hours and the first hour before the end of work are the peak periods for accidents. (3) Guizhou, Hunan, Henan, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Chongqing are the provinces with the most coal and gas outburst accidents. (4) An overall 75.82 % of accidents occurred in the driving face, and 81.08 % of accidents occurred in coal and gas outburst mines. (5) Blasting, drilling, driving, and coal falling are the main inducing factors. Case analysis of accidents found the following: (1) Human error is the leading cause of accidents. Among the errors, the lack of strict enforcement of outburst prevention measures, illegal command, and the illegal operation of miners are the main unsafe acts. (2) Safety knowledge and awareness of miners is not generally high, and serious habitual violations and unsafe psychologies exist. (3) The gas comprehensive prevention system and supervision system in the coal mine safety management system (SMS) can be easily operated improperly, and the safety training system and emergency management system can be absent. The aim of this study was to explore the evolution and release rule of internal energy storage in the process of coal and gas outburst and to further reveal the mechanism of coal and gas outburst from the perspective of energy. In this paper, the experiment of gas expansion energy release of coal samples under different adsorption pressures and with different moisture contents was carried out with the self-developed experimental device for release of gas-bearing coal expansion energy under load, and the energy of the whole outburst process was divided into three parts: the total expansion energy of gas, the energy consumed by destroying and throwing out coal body and the energy released inefficiently. On the basis of reasonable assumption, the energy evolution calculation model of each part was constructed with mathematical method. By analyzing the changes and distribution rules of three parts of energy under different experimental conditions, this paper explored the controlling effects of gas pressure, water content, and other variables on the energy evolution rules in the process of coal and gas outburst. Experimental and theoretical studies showed that in the gas-dominated coal and gas outburst process, the destruction of coal body was in the form of stratification; under each experimental condition, there existed a critical gas pressure value for the occurrence of coal and gas outburst, and there was a sudden change of energy evolution near this value; the existence of water made the critical pressure and the minimum energy consumption of coal and gas outburst increase obviously; under the experimental conditions, there was a linear relationship between the critical gas pressure and water content and a positive exponential relationship between the minimum energy consumption and water content. Coal deformation caused by gas adsorption is a well‐known phenomenon and has played an important role in many engineering fields. For example, the bulk coal deformation induced by gas is a primary factor in coal and gas outbursts, and the changes in coalbed permeability are primarily determined by the evolution of the coal fracture volumetric strain during gas recovery. However, the current models of coal deformation induced by gas do not fully consider the coal seam field conditions or the deformation factors. To better fit coal seam field conditions and provide a basis for engineering applications, in this work, based on coal's physical structure, coal seam field conditions, the energy balance approach, poroelasticity, mathematical differentiation, and previous scholars' research results, the volumetric strain models of bulk coal, coal fracture, and coal matrix under coal seam field conditions are established. In addition, based on the analysis of the effect of gas pressure on coal deformation, the difference in gas pressure effects on the bulk coal deformation between experimental conditions and coal seam field conditions revealed that when the bulk coal deformation is tested in a laboratory, the gas pressure exerts a compressive effect on the bulk coal. However, under coal seam field conditions, the gas pressure has a swelling effect on the bulk coal. Additionally, gas pressure exerts an compression on the coal matrix and a swelling on the coal fracture under coal seam field conditions. At the end of the paper, the established models were analyzed and discussed from multiple perspectives. Mining protective coal seams is an effective approach for coal and gas outburst control, but a large amount of gangue is usually produced when mining a thin protective seam and dealing with the gangue can be a challenging task. In the paper, a novel integrated mining system by extracting two panels simultaneously was demonstrated in the 12th coal mine of the Pingdingshan coalfield: one panel was mined in the thin protective coal seam, and the other one was mined in the protected coal seam. The thickness of the protective seam was only 0.8 m, but the mining height reached 1.8 m, indicating that there was about 1 m thick roof stone being mined. An underground coal preparation plant was built, and the mixture of coal and gangue from the protective panel was sorted underground. The sorted coal was delivered to the surface stockpile, while the waste rock was directly backfilled into the gob of the panel in the protected coal seam. Thus, waste rock did not need to be lifted up to the surface, which can reduce material handing cost and minimise mining footprint on the surface. In order to prevent the migration of pressure relief gas into the working areas of the protective coal seam, the main reasons causing gas exceedance in the upper corner of U-shaped ventilation system were investigated, and then the Y-shaped ventilation system and various gas extraction boreholes were implemented to effectively control the pressure relief gas. Numerical models were developed to assess the effect of applying gob backfilling during the extraction of two panels in parallel. The results show that the gob backfilling can reduce the surface subsidence and horizontal movement, which is very helpful for the protection of ground water and surface infrastructures. For the characteristics of high frequency and strong suddenness of dynamic disasters in deep coal mines, the traditional detection and evaluation techniques applied to shallow coal mine failed to accurately judge the risk degree of disasters. Therefore, it is of great significance to use advanced detection technologies and appropriate evaluation methods to improve the accuracy and efficiency of risk assessment in the process of coal mining. The present paper applies the rapid detection and multi-source dynamic detection technologies used in the field of mining with the purpose of improving the reliability of detection technologies for typical dynamic disaster. In this study, the data fusion technology was used to analyze data obtained from laboratory experiments, engineering survey, detection and historical data, so as to form the final dynamic and static indicators. Then, the new combined evaluation models with time series of coal and gas outburst as well as rock burst were established respectively to carry out the comprehensive risk evaluation using the least-squares method and the time-varying weight method. After the comprehensive analysis on the results of the above two evaluation models, the risk areas of the typical dynamic disasters were judged and classified. Finally, the evaluation models were coded to build an early-warning software platform that could achieve automatic evaluation and the actual 3D visualization of coal mining areas. The early-warning software platform was applied to risk assessment of dynamic disasters in Gengcun Coal Mine in Yima City, Henan Province, China. The results of the 6-month experiment showed that the risk assessment accuracy and reliability of the proposed evaluation models was 100% and 90% respectively, which indicates that the newly developed approach is reliable and can be recommended for applying in more coal mines to improve the process safety risk control. The rock masses that occur in nature are damaged and unstable due to the impact of rock burst, coal and gas outbursts, and other human mining activities, posing a major threat to human life and safety. In the light of the early warning of the danger of the loaded rock mass, this paper adopts acoustic emission (AE) device to analyze the AE signal characteristics and damage laws of the loaded rock under different stress levels. Then, based on the AE signal characteristics of the loaded rock, data mining technology is used to construct a model to predict the failure and instability of the loaded rock mass and, finally, verify the reliability of the prediction model based on data mining. The results show that the AE signal characteristics of red sandstone under uniaxial load are related to the magnitude of the bearing stress. Before the plastic deformation stage, the AE energy and the cumulative count per second are both small. After the loaded rock enters the plastic deformation stage, the AE energy and the cumulative count per second both increase sharply. After the AE energy is greater than 500 mV ∗ ms and the cumulative count per second is greater than 150, the loaded rock mass will issue an early warning signal. Protective layer mining, as a dominating method for preventing coal and gas outburst, is generally adopted in highly gassy coal mines. In the absence of a suitable thickness coal seam to serve as the protective layer, the rock-coal composite protective layer was proposed in this paper. We conducted a series of simulations and engineering measurements to investigate the protective effect under the mining of the rock-coal composite protective layer of the Zhongtai coal mine located in the Hebi area of Henan, China. The numerical simulation analysis showed that, after the completion of protective layer mining, the minimum vertical stress of the No. 2-1 coal seam had been reduced to 3.46 MPa. The maximum vertical displacement of the No. 2-1 coal seam is 455.01 mm. The maximum expansion deformation of the No. 2-1 coal seam is 9.77‰; the effective pressure relief range is as long as 160 m. The similarity simulation experiment revealed that, after the completion of protective layer mining, the minimum vertical stress of the No. 2-1 coal seam is 4.0 MPa. The maximum vertical displacement of the No. 2-1 coal seam is 640 mm. The maximum expansion deformation of the No. 2-1 coal seam is 26.37‰; the effective protection range reaches 130 m. The engineering measurements demonstrated that the variation law of gas drainage parameters in the protected layer corresponds to the protected layer's vertical stress distribution law in numerical simulation and similarity simulation. With the exploitation of the composite protective layer, the protective layer's pressure begins to release. The thick and hard rock strata (THRS) exist widely in coal measure strata, which control the movements of overlying rock strata in stopes. When THRS break, great energy is released, which could aggravate the risks of coal and gas outburst, rock burst, and other dynamic disasters. Therefore, the foundation and key of preventing dynamic disasters are to distinguish the THRS that could induce coal-rock dynamic disasters and to analyze the laws of rock stratum breaking and energy releasing. The paper proposed the theoretical calculation methods of the energy accumulation and attenuation of rock breaking which is greatly affected by the hanging length of rock strata and the spreading distance. One or more roof strata that play a leading role in inducing dynamic disasters of the underlying coal mass are defined as the key disaster-inducing strata (KDIS). The disaster-inducing coefficient (DIC) is defined and used as the criterion of KDIS. The greater the source energy, the shorter the spreading distance, and the smaller the attenuation coefficient are, the easier the roof strata are to become KDIS. The disaster-inducing ability of the main THRS was analyzed, and the igneous sill was judged as KDIS, taking the Yangliu Coal Mine as project background. As the increasing demand for coal and the depletion of shallow coal resources, the tendency of coal mining in China is progressively shifting to deeper areas, which brings about a circumstance where the frequency and intensity of coal and gas outburst accidents have further deteriorated. Nowadays, there are many outburst prevention measures being applied on site, while this disaster still occurs from time to time. Therefore, to better improve the preventing outcome of them, this paper came forward with some principles, based on the mechanical theory of deep mining and damage evolution procedure concerning coal containing gas underneath the impact load. The primary conclusions were as follows: the stresses, strains, and associated widths in the three areas, namely fracture area, plastic area, and elastic area, in front of the working face were recalculated by considering stress-softening and dilatancy of coal mass. The damage evolution of gas-bearing coal mass under impact loading was displayed in the LS-DYNA numerical simulation as a process of compaction followed by destruction. The proposed principles could be split into two perspectives, one for the fracture area, specifically, to minimize the descending of the coal mass's strength in this area; another for the stress-concentration zone, namely, to abate the thrust due to extrusion and deformation, on the coal body which was located in the front area. According to those principles, a preliminary goal-reaching parameter was proposed and it was implemented for the evaluation of advanced drilling. The results will cooperate to rationalize the design and layout of local outburst prevention measures, thereby enhancing the efficiency of control and ameliorating the deteriorating scenario of outburst disasters. Coal and gas outburst is a serious disaster in the mining, and crosscut coal is the most prone to cause the coal and gas outburst. In order to study the mechanism of outburst, this paper studied the stress distribution characteristics in front of the working face in the process of rock roadway driving before implementing crosscut coal firstly. On this basis, the hypothesis of stress distribution on the "strong and soft face" of coal-rock mass was proposed. And by using the hypothesis, the mechanical equation for the parameter changes of the plastic zone in front of the working face in crosscut coal was established, and the width and morphological characteristics of the plastic zone in crosscut coal were analyzed. The results show that during the process, as the working face moves forward, the shape distribution of the plastic zone in front of the working face changes from the "semielliptical" to "semibutterfly," And based on the distribution characteristics of plastic zone in working face in crosscut coal, modification proposals for outburst-prevention measures were proposed and provided technical support for the outburst-prevention measures and key parameters setting to prevent the coal outburst in crosscut coal. Coal structure could be roughly divided into four types. Among them, the two kinds of tectonic coal face a high risk of heat-induced gas outburst, which arises from the unfavorable temperature conditions in the coal structure. However, there is not yet an efficient way to identify the type of coal structure. The adjacent types of coal structures are often misjudged. The lack of an efficient identification method hinders the prevention of heat-induced gas outburst, making it difficult to realize energy-efficient and safe mining. To solve the problem, this paper first theoretically analyzes the ultrasonic properties of different types of coals, and applies backpropagation neural network (BPNN) to build up an intelligent identification model for the type of coal structure. Specifically, the characteristic parameters of ultrasonic signal were taken as the basis for judging the type of coal structure, the identification algorithm of BPNN was adopted to accurately identify the structure type of coal, and then the heat-induced gas outburst risk of the coal was evaluated preliminarily. Experimental results show that the proposed model could accurately identify the type of coal structure, and even differentiate between adjacent types of coals. This paper investigates the problem of gas outburst prediction in the working face of coal mine. Firstly, based on a comprehensive analysis of influence factors of gas outburst, an improved entropy weight algorithm is introduced into a grey correlation analysis algorithm; thus, the reasonable weights and correlation order of the influencing factors are obtained to improve the objectivity of the evaluation. The main controlling factors obtained are used as the input of the prediction model. Secondly, by utilizing the improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO), the penalty factor and kernel parameter of least square support vector machine (LSSVM) are optimized to enhance the global search ability and avoid the occurrence of the local optimal solutions, and a new prediction model of gas outburst based on IPSO-LSSVM is established. At last, the prediction model is applied in the tunneling heading face 14141 of Jiuli Hill mine in Jiaozuo City, China. The physical simulation system is an important means to study the mechanism of coal and gas outburst. The small- and medium-sized coal and gas outbursts account for the largest proportion in China. So, the paper focuses on small- and medium-sized coal and gas outbursts based on key physical rules and their statistical characteristics. According to the geometric parameters statistical data of more than 100 caverns, the proportion of outburst caverns whose depth is less than 5 m is 80%, and whose depth is more than 6 m is 13%. The ratio of depth and cavern outlet's diameter is 2.58–7.31. There are statistical relationship of 2 times between coal's and cavern's volume, and between gas emission volume per ton and gas content in seam. Then, the cavern of coal and gas outburst is simplified as an ellipsoid, and the shape of cavern outlet is simplified as a circle. The cavern's and the prototype's geometrical parameters of small and medium coal and gas outbursts were deduced. The depth of cavern is 5 m, width is 4 m, and diameter of cavern outlet is 0.68–1.94 m. The depth of coal and outburst prototype is 12.3 m, width is 6.5 m, and diameter of cavern outlet is 0.68 m. In order to guarantee the movement similarity, according to the relationships among statistical data of outburst coal particle's size, cavern outlet's size, and height of tunnel, the minimum cavern outlet's size was calculated. Select 10 times the coal particle's size (5 mm) as the smallest size. Then, maximum geometric similarity ratio of coal and gas outburst was deduced, and it is 13.6. The minimum geometrical parameters of coal and outburst similar model were obtained. Its depth is 0.9 m, width is 0.48 m, and diameter of cavern outlet is 50 mm. The feature selection of influencing factors of coal and gas outbursts is of great significance for presenting the most discriminative features and improving prediction performance of a classifier, the paper presents an effective hybrid feature selection and modified outbursts classifier framework which aims at solving exiting coal and gas outbursts prediction problems. First, a measurement standard based on maximum information coefficient(MIC) is employed to identify the wide correlations between two variables; Second, based on a ranking procedure using non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm(NSGAII), maximum relevance minimum redundancy(MRMR) algorithm is subsequently performed to find out candidate feature set highly related to the class label and uncorrelated with each other; Third, random forest(RF) is employed to search the optimal feature subset from the candidate feature set, then the optimal feature subset that influences the classification performance of coal and gas outbursts is obtained; Finally, an improved classifier model has been proposed that combines gradient boosting decision tree(GBDT) and k-nearest neighbor(KNN) for outbursts prediction. In the modified classifier model, the GBDT is utilized to assign different weights to features, then the weighted features are input into the KNN to verify the effectiveness of proposed method on coal and gas outbursts dataset. The experimental results conclude that our proposed scheme is effective in the number of feature and prediction accuracy when compared with other related state-of-the-art prediction models based on feature selection for coal and gas outbursts. To analyze the effect of small faults in the working face on coal and gas outbursts, the coal and gas outburst accident in the 21431 working face was studied with the 3DEC numerical simulation method, and the main research contents were the change laws of both stresses at the small fault and the overburden strata movement rate in the small fault zone of which the drop height and the strike were designed into different groups. The results show that the risk of small fault slip increases with the advancing working face. In addition, there is a positive correlation between the risk and the small fault throw. The movement rate of overburden strata in the small fault zone increases along with the rising of the small fault throw, which increases the energy transferred to the coal seam from the surrounding rock under the effect of the small fault. Hence, the effect of small faults on the working face on coal and gas outbursts was positively correlated with the small fault throw. Under the influence of a small fault strike, the closer it is to the small fault along the dip distance at the same working face, the greater the risk will be of a coal and gas outburst. And the bigger the small fault strike is, the greater is the stress concentration degree in front of the working face and the more the elastic energy is stored and the greater is the possibility of an outburst. Coal and gas outburst has been one of the main threats to coal mine safety. Accurate coal and gas outburst prediction is the key to avoid accidents. The data is actual and complete by default in the existing prediction model. However, in fact, data missing and abnormal data value often occur, which results in poor prediction performance. Therefore, this paper proposes to use the correlation coefficient to complete the missing data filling in real time for the first time. The abnormal data identification is completed based on the Pauta criterion. Random forest model is used to realize the prediction model. The prediction performance of sensitivity 100%, accuracy 97.5%, and specificity 84.6% were obtained. Experiments show that the model can complete the prediction of coal and gas outburst in real time under the condition of missing data and abnormal data value, which can be used as a new prediction model of coal and gas outburst.
