Abstract

Paracrine and endocrine roles have increasingly been ascribed to extracellular vesicles (EVs) generated by multicellular organisms. Central to the biogenesis, content, and function of EVs are their delimiting lipid bilayer membranes. To evaluate research progress on membranes and EVs, the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) conducted a workshop in March 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, bringing together key opinion leaders and hands-on researchers who were selected on the basis of submitted applications. The workshop was accompanied by two scientific surveys and covered four broad topics: EV biogenesis and release; EV uptake and fusion; technologies and strategies used to study EV membranes; and EV transfer and functional assays. In this ISEV position paper, we synthesize the results of the workshop and the related surveys to outline important outstanding questions about EV membranes and describe areas of consensus. The workshop discussions and survey responses reveal that while much progress has been made in the field, there are still several concepts that divide opinion. Good consensus exists in some areas, including particular aspects of EV biogenesis, uptake and downstream signalling. Areas with little to no consensus include EV storage and stability, as well as whether and how EVs fuse with target cells. Further research is needed in these key areas, as a better understanding of membrane biology will contribute substantially towards advancing the field of extracellular vesicles.

Abstract

Zone identification is a topic in the area of text mining which helps researchers be benefited by the content of scientific papers in a satisfactory manner. The major aim of zone identification is to classify the sentences of scientific texts into some predefined zone categories which can be useful for summarization as well as information extraction. In this paper, we propose a two-level approach to zone identification within which the first level is in charge of classifying the sentences in a given paper based on some semantic and lexical features. In this respect, several machine learning algorithms such as Simple Logistics, Logistic Model Trees and Sequential Minimal Optimization are applied. The second level is responsible for applying fusion to the classification results obtained for consecutive sentences of the first level in order to make the final decision. The proposed method is evaluated on ART and DRI corpora as two well-known data sets. Results obtained for the accuracy of zone identification for these corpora are respectively 65.75% and 84.15%, which seem to be quite promising compared to those obtained by previous approaches.

Abstract

Numerous fabrication methods have been reported for microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) using barrier materials ranging from photoresist to wax. While these methods have been used with wide success, consistently producing small, high-resolution features using materials and methods that are compatible with solvents and surfactants remains a challenge. Two new methods are presented here for generating μPADs with well-defined, high-resolution structures compatible with solvents and surfactant-containing solutions by partially or fully fusing paper with Parafilm® followed by cutting with a CO2 laser cutter. Partial fusion leads to laminated paper (l-paper) while the complete fusion results in infused paper (i-paper). Patterned structures in l-paper were fabricated by selective removal of the paper but not the underlying Parafilm® using a benchtop CO2 laser. Under optimized conditions, a gap as small as 137 ± 22 μm could be generated. Using this approach, a miniaturized paper 384-zone plate, consisting of circular detection elements with a diameter of 1.86 mm, was fabricated in 64 × 43 mm2 area. Furthermore, these ablation-patterned substrates were confirmed to be compatible with surfactant solutions and common organic solvents (methanol, acetonitrile and dimethylformamide), which has been achieved by very few μPAD patterning techniques. Patterns in i-paper were created by completely cutting out zones of the i-paper and then fixing pre-cut paper into these openings similar to the strategy of fitting a jigsaw piece into a puzzle. Upon heating, unmodified paper was readily sealed into these openings due to partial reflow of the paraffin into the paper. This unique and simple bonding method was illustrated by two types of 3D μPADs, a push-on valve and a time-gated flow distributor, without adding adhesive layers. The free-standing jigsaw-patterned sheets showed good structural stability and solution compatibility, which provided a facile alternative method for fabricating complicated μPADs.

Abstract

Paracrine and endocrine roles have increasingly been ascribed to extracellular vesicles (EVs) generated by multicellular organisms. Central to the biogenesis, content, and function of EVs are their delimiting lipid bilayer membranes. To evaluate research progress on membranes and EVs, the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) conducted a workshop in March 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, bringing together key opinion leaders and hands-on researchers who were selected on the basis of submitted applications. The workshop was accompanied by two scientific surveys and covered four broad topics: EV biogenesis and release; EV uptake and fusion; technologies and strategies used to study EV membranes; and EV transfer and functional assays. In this ISEV position paper, we synthesize the results of the workshop and the related surveys to outline important outstanding questions about EV membranes and describe areas of consensus. The workshop discussions and survey responses reveal that while much progress has been made in the field, there are still several concepts that divide opinion. Good consensus exists in some areas, including particular aspects of EV biogenesis, uptake and downstream signalling. Areas with little to no consensus include EV storage and stability, as well as whether and how EVs fuse with target cells. Further research is needed in these key areas, as a better understanding of membrane biology will contribute substantially towards advancing the field of extracellular vesicles. Abstract

The O/W isocyanate emulsion can be used as a sizing agent to improve the waterproof performance of paper. However, the -NCO content in the emulsion diminishes with the prolongation of standing time. What is happening to this seemingly stable emulsion, especially concerning its microstructure evolution? We propose to monitor the emulsions deteriorative process by combining freeze-drying technique and SEM. Thus, the emulsion containing -NCO active group was obtained by the synthetic polymer emulsification of HDI trimers. The results of SEM demonstrate that the emulsion deteriorative process actually represents the collapsing and fusion of stable honeycomb structure with the prolongation of standing time and increasing temperature. This is possibly due to the fact that the inner aggregative HDI trimers are reacting with outside water to form urethane macromolecules, and this results in the collapsing and fusion of the honeycomb structure, as observed in SEM images. Moreover, the measurement results of -NCO content and FT-IR spectroscopy present the -NCO content as reducing with increasing standing time and temperature. This conclusion further proves our hypotheses. Additionally, the emulsions are used to treat the paper by site-directed reaction. The results show that the with the increase of the standing time and temperature, the contact angles and surface free energy show a decrease and an increase, respectively, whereas surface free energy appeared at a minimum of 29.19 mJ·m−2 when the standing time and temperature was 1 h and 25 °C.

Abstract

This work numerically investigates the transport characteristics associated with the drying process of paper in the presence of a phase change material (PCM). The presence of PCM is studied in two different configurations: a layer of PCM embedded in the middle of paper and the PCM particles dispersed uniformly within the paper. This unique concept offers a new approach to paper drying by utilizing the latent-heat of fusion associated with the PCM, favorably impacting the energy efficiency of the drying process. The results indicate that the PCM acts as a heat source and a heat sink throughout the drying process, enhancing the drying rate. This study also includes the presence of an infrared emitter within the drying process. The corresponding absorption coefficient of PCM is measured experimentally. This paper is not concerned with the impact of presence of PCM on paper sheet properties.The proposed operating conditions and configuration presented here are solely for the purpose of illustration of the concept of drying in the presence of PCM.

Abstract

Several general DFE algorithms for multi-sensor systems are reviewed.Some random phenomena induced by networks are summarized.The advances of DFE algorithms for networked systems are reviewed.Some future topics on DFE algorithms for networked systems are provided. In this paper, the advances of distributed fusion estimation (DFE) algorithms for multi-sensor networked systems (NSs) are reviewed. First, several general DFE algorithms are reviewed. Then, some random phenomena in NSs are discussed, including data quantization, random transmission delays, packet dropouts, fading measurements and communication disturbances. Finally, the advances of DFE algorithms for NSs are summarized.

Abstract

In autonomous driving, sensing is the most fundamental task providing the necessary information for intelligent vehicles. Compared with single-vehicle sensing, cooperative sensing can greatly reduce the cost, increase the accuracy and overcome the vision range limit. In this paper, a cooperative sensing framework is proposed based upon the occupancy grid map. For map formation, we investigate four occupancy probability distribution algorithms to transform the sensor data into a probability model; for map fusion, we design a probability fusion method to combine multi-vehicle maps. Simulations show that the proposed probability distribution algorithms can capture the environment information with different focuses and the map fusion process can expand the vehicles’ sensing range and improve the accuracy.

Abstract

Multifunctional integration is an inherent characteristic for biological materials with multiscale structures. Learning from nature is an effective approach for scientists and engineers to construct multifunctional materials. In nature, mollusks (abalone), mussels, and the lotus have evolved different and optimized solutions to survive. Here, bio-inspired multifunctional graphene composite paper was fabricated in situ through the fusion of the different biological solutions from nacre (brick-and-mortar structure), mussel adhesive protein (adhesive property and reducing character), and the lotus leaf (self-cleaning effect). Owing to the special properties (self-polymerization, reduction, and adhesion), dopamine could be simultaneously used as a reducing agent for graphene oxide and as an adhesive, similar to the mortar in nacre, to crosslink the adjacent graphene. The resultant nacre-like graphene paper exhibited stable superhydrophobicity, self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, and remarkable mechanical properties underwater.
