Abstract

paper making process adopts primarily a generic flow of steps across industries. This industry is one of the largest in the world and is touted to be growing further with incremental demand for paper and its affiliated products for its eco-friendliness. However, paper and pulp industry is a heavily resource dependent industry be it forest resource, water resource, energy or chemicals. In fact, it is said to be one of the top five leading consumers of energy. Given such, this industry is a major contributor to depleting natural resources and increasing greenhouse gas emission, adding intensively to the global warming. Against such a backdrop, it offers relevant cause to study the scholarly discussion and debate on sustainable issues in paper and pulp industry playing around the academic universe and also to poke into and discuss some of the issues of sustainability in the industry emerging out of the articles. Accordingly, through this article, the present state of affairs in the academic fraternity on the above topic has been laid out through a bibliometric analysis, while some of the common challenges of environmental sustainability associated with the paper making process have been identified from the literature and discussed thereof. Abstract

In this paper, we estimated the methane emissions by the disposal of sanitary and domestic-use paper consumed throughout Brazil from 1901 to 2016. The apparent consumption of this type of paper from 1961 to 2016, calculated from the data of the FAOSTAT system, was used to estimate the amount of waste disposed of annually in three site categories: sanitary landfill, controlled dump, and open-air, uncontrolled dump. The 2006 IPCC Guide methodology was used to calculate CH4emissions and long-term carbon storage. Nine scenarios based upon the law that establishes the National Solid Waste Policy (NSWP) were examined, considering 100% waste disposal and treatment in landfills or incineration from 2014. The total emission was estimated at 1.967 MtCH4, corresponding to 55.080 MtCO2eq by GWP-AR5, and the stored carbon at 3.724 Mt, corresponding to 13.655 MtCO2eq. CH4emission increased beyond the population growth rate due to an increase in the per capita paper consumption in the country, from 0.02 kgCH4.year-1 in 1961 to 0.30 kg CH4.year-1 in 2016. The NSWP has not yet been accomplished, and the scenarios outlined indicate that, from the point of view of CH4 emissions, it would be more advantageous to carry out incineration instead of applying other waste treatment technologies.

Multiple paper mills in the US are now accepting single-use polyethylene-coated paper cups, bringing the total number of North American mills accepting paper cups to over 40. Abstract

This paper deals with the identification of the wood species used for the production of wooden tools in an ancient plant for manual paper production. After a quick historic contextualisation of the importance of the paper industry developed in the Pescia district (Tuscany, Italy), this paper describes the process of manual paper production and the different tools, mostly wooden, used by the workers. The historic plant "Le Carte" still preserves these tools, which were sampled to scientifically identify the timber species. Samples were drawn from any wooden component of the equipment involved in the whole manual paper making process. Sampling was performed on any portion of the artefact where the species of origin was not clearly and reliably identifiable by eye, or aided by a manual magnifying lens. In total, 1223 identifications were performed and 25 timber types observed. Most of timber identifications regard the large mould collection (434 artefacts, 1154 identifications, 17 timbers), while the equipment included fewer artefacts, identifications and timbers. 46. Environmental Performances of Forest Products Industry Participating in Global Value Chain --Taking the Carbon Emissions of China's Wood Processing and Paper Printing and Publishing Industry as an Example.

Abstract

Compared with the world's major forest products trading countries, China's forest products industry still has relatively high carbon emission intensity. Based on the environment Kuznets curve model of the global value chain, the paper uses the MRIO model to decompose the carbon emissions of China, focusing on the carbon emission intensity of the forest products industry, and calculating the value chain participation index and value chain position indicators of the forest products industry. It is found that both the wood processing industry and the paper printing and publishing industry value chain participation have a significant impact on carbon emission. Because of great significance to the energy conservation and emission reduction of China's forest products industry, policy implications are to improve the status of division of labor in the value chain and to achieve green economic development by absorbing, developing and adopting more green technologies.
