Honeycomb structures made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) are increasingly used in the aerospace field due to their excellent energy absorption capability. Attention has been paid to CFRP structures in order to accurately simulate their progressive failure behavior and discuss their ply designability. In this study, the preparation process of a CFRP corrugated sheet (half of the honeycomb structure) and a CFRP honeycomb structure was illustrated. The developed finite element method was verified by a quasi-static test, which was then used to predict the low-velocity impact (LVI) behavior of the CFRP honeycomb, and ultimately, the influence of the ply angle and number on energy absorption was discussed. The results show that the developed finite element method (including the user-defined material subroutine VUMAT) can reproduce the progressive failure behavior of the CFRP corrugated sheet under quasi-static compression and also estimate the LVI behavior. The angle and number of plies of the honeycomb structure have an obvious influence on their energy absorption under LVI. Among them, energy absorption increases with the ply number, but the specific energy absorption is basically constant. The velocity drop ratios for the five different ply angles are 79.12%, 68.49%, 66.88%, 66.86%, and 60.02%, respectively. Therefore, the honeycomb structure with [0/90]s ply angle had the best energy absorption effect. The model proposed in this paper has the potential to significantly reduce experimental expenses, while the research findings can provide valuable technical support for design optimization in aerospace vehicle structures. The inserts supporting run-flat tire (ISRFT) is mainly used in military off-road vehicles, which need to maintain high mobility after a blowout. Regulations show that the ISRFT can be driven safely for at least 100 km at a speed of 30 km/h to 40 km/h under zero-pressure conditions. However, the ISRFT generates serious heat during zero-pressure driving, which accelerates the aging of the tire rubber and degrades its performance. In order to study the thermo-mechanical coupling characteristics of the ISRFT, a three-dimensional finite element model verified by bench tests was established. Then, the stress–strain, energy loss and heat generation of the ISRFT were analyzed by the sequential thermo-mechanical coupling method to obtain the steady-state temperature field (SSTF). Finally, four kinds of honeycomb inserts bodies were designed based on the tangent method, and the SSTF of the honeycomb and the original ISRFT were compared. The results indicated that the high-temperature region of the ISRFT is concentrated in the shoulder area. For every 1 km/h increase in velocity, the temperature at the shoulder of the tire increases by approximately 1.6 °C. The SSTF of the honeycomb ISRFT is more uniformly distributed, and the maximum temperature of the shoulder decreases by about 30 °C, but the maximum temperature of the tread increases by about 40 °C. Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) and honeycomb structures are typical representatives of porous structures. In this paper, multi‐layer structures based on the combination of P‐surfaces and honeycomb structures are fabricated and the compression deformation characteristics are investigated based on quasi‐static compression tests and finite element simulation. The results show that the established finite element model can better simulate the deformation and damage modes of the multi‐layer structure, and the multi‐layer structure exhibits layer‐by‐layer deformation and sequential compression collapse in the deformation process. The tensile stress is crucial in the deformation and damage process of the P‐structure layer. Honeycomb structures with zero Poisson's ratio show promising potential for application in variable-sweep wing aircraft. The shear properties of these honeycomb structures serve as a crucial indicator of their morphing capacity. This paper derives the linear and non-linear shear properties of a honeycomb structure with zero Poisson's ratio. A modified factor is introduced to establish a relationship between the linear and non-linear shear modulus of the honeycomb structure, simplifying the calculation method of the non-linear shear modulus. The validity of theoretical predictions is then confirmed using the finite element method Furthermore, the influences of the geometric parameters on the shear properties of the honeycomb structure with zero Poisson's ratio are investigated, highlighting the varying contributions of these cell geometric parameters to the shear properties. In this paper, a honeycomb membrane-type acoustic metamaterial made of a honeycomb structure with embedded membrane layers is investigated using the finite element method. This lightweight material presents excellent transmission loss (TL) at low frequency. Honeycomb structures with two and three embedded membrane layers are analyzed numerically and the effects of the number of membrane layers and of the thickness of the air gap between membranes are illustrated. Also, the influences of the membrane material properties and thickness on the TL and displacement magnitude and mode shape at different frequencies are presented. It is shown that the TL increases over a large frequency band when the honeycomb cell size decreases while the displacement magnitude of the membrane is reduced and the mode shape is affected. It is observed that the TL presents multiple resonant peaks as the thickness of the membranes is reduced. An improvement of the TL is observed around the anti-resonant frequencies by increasing the damping loss factor of the membrane, which causes a reduction of the resonant displacement magnitude and TL peaks amplitude. The structure of non-pneumatic tire is complex and various, but its performance is superior to ordinary tire, so it has broad prospects. In this paper, a design method of honeycomb structure was proposed based on tangent method, and the hexagonal and circular honeycomb structure were established. The rules of displacement, radial stiffness and ground pressure of honeycomb structure with different density were studied. Meanwhile, the most basic bearing performance of non-pneumatic tire was analyzed by finite element method under static conditions. The results show that the radial stiffness of honeycomb increases with the increase of density. When the density is small, the bearing capacity of circular structure is stronger than that of hexagonal structure, the ground pressure decreases with the increase of density and the maximum stress of the two is located on the honeycomb structure. When the density is high, the maximum stress is on the contact surface between the rim and the inner circumference. This study provides a reference for other types of non-pneumatic tire structure design and builds the foundation to study contact performance analysis of non-pneumatic tire under complex working conditions. Due to their superior structural and mechanical properties, materials with negative Poisson's ratio are of increasing interest to research scholars, especially in fuel-efficient vehicles. In this work, a new concave I-shaped honeycomb structure is established by integrating the re-entrant hexagon and the I-shaped beam structure, and its negative Poisson's ratio characteristics and energy absorption properties are investigated. The effect of structural parameters on the energy absorption characteristics is analyzed using the finite element model. The results show that both the specific energy absorption and peak impact force decrease with the increase in cellular length and vertical short cellular height, and increase with the increase in horizontal short cellular length and cellular thickness. To obtain a smaller peak impact force and larger specific energy absorption with smaller mass, the four cell sizes were optimized by using Latin hypercube sampling, Gaussian radial basis function, and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). Compared with the original design, the SEA increased by 44.175%, and the PCF increased by 25.857%. Meanwhile, the mass decreased by 31.140%. Hence, the optimal structure has better crashworthiness. Because of favorable mechanical properties, deformation resistance and being conducive to environmental protection, honeycomb fabricated plastic pavement slabs are highly recommended these years. At present, most studies focus on the performance of plastic materials, however, the dimension optimization of fabricated plastic pavement slab is rarely mentioned. In this paper, an optimized geometry of the honeycomb pavement slab was determined through finite element analysis. Mechanical response of honeycomb slabs with different internal dimensions and external dimensions were explored. Several dimension factors were taken into consideration including the side length, rib thickness, the thickness of both top and bottom slabs of honeycomb structure and the length, the width and the thickness of the fabricated plastic slab. The results showed that honeycomb pavement slab with 6 cm bottom slab, 12 cm top slab,18 cm side length and 6 cm rib thickness is recommended, additionally, an external dimension of 4 m × 4 m × 0.45 m is suggested. Then, the mechanical responses of this optimized fabricated plastic slab were further investigated. Significance of different influencing factors, including wheel load, elastic modulus of plastic material, base layer thickness, soil foundation modulus and base layer modulus were ranked. Honeycomb structure containing curved reentrant sides with negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) was designed and the impact dynamics behaviors were studied by finite element method. The Poisson's ratio and the energy absorption capacity of the honeycomb structure with different arc angle were studied under different compression velocities. The results show that the Poisson's ratio of the honeycomb structure can reach −0.373 with arc angle of 180°. The energy absorption capacity of the honeycomb structure increased with an increasing compression velocity, and the deformation mode changed from X type to V type and I type. When the compression velocity is low, the dynamic response curve of the honeycomb structure with arc angle of 180° has the characteristics of two-stage plateau region. When the compression velocity is high, the energy absorption capacity of the honeycomb structure increased with an increasing arc angle. When the arc angle is higher than 120°, the honeycomb structure has NPR effect, and the energy absorption capacity of the honeycomb structure is better than the honeycomb structure with other arc angles. The battery-pack system of electric vehicles is prone to collide with low obstacles on the road, causing battery short circuits and even explosions. It poses a great safety threat to passengers and drivers. The honeycomb structure's high energy absorption and lightweight properties have made it a popular choice in the automotive industry. This paper designs different bio-inspired honeycomb structures to a battery-pack system of electric vehicles to improve the crashworthiness performance. The effects of different bio-inspired honeycomb structures on the crashworthiness of a battery-pack system during frontal impact are analyzed based on a nonlinear finite element model. First, the geometric parameters of seven different bio-inspired honeycomb individual units are described. The overall structure of the honeycomb is applied to a battery-pack system. Second, the nonlinear finite element model of a battery-pack system and honeycomb structures are established and verified. Then, collision simulations are conducted. The deformation and the maximum stress of a battery-pack's bottom shell are computed. The energy absorbed by the honeycomb structures during frontal impact are investigated. The results indicate that the proposed bio-inspired honeycomb structure mimicking grass stems improves the safety performance of battery-pack systems most. Finally, a parametric design is carried out on the bio-inspired honeycomb structure. The effects of wall thicknesses and the number of replacement hexagons on the crashworthiness performance are analyzed. The honeycomb structure preforms best when thickness is 1 mm and the number of replacement hexagons is 2 and 4. In this study, glue-pressed engineered honeycomb bamboo (GPEHB) was prepared, and the dependence of the compressive properties of the produced GPEHB on the load–slenderness ratio, longitudinal strain–slenderness ratio, and ultimate strain–slenderness ratio was examined. The detailed failure modes were also investigated. The main failure modes of the short GPEHB specimens were squashing, crushing, and splitting, and the bearing capacity was mainly dependent on the compressive strength of the bamboo units. Buckling failure modes involving significant lateral deflection were observed for the long GPEHB specimens. With increasing slenderness ratio, the bearing capacities of the GPEHB specimens decreased significantly. The ultimate load of the GPEHB specimens decreased significantly as the slenderness ratio increased from 4 to 6 (GPEHB length increased from 736 to 1,104 mm). The ultimate deformation behaviors of the specimens were fit well by a quadratic function of the slenderness ratio. The GPEHB was also analyzed and modeled via finite element analysis (FEA). • Combining ML and FE methods to accelerate the design process of honeycomb structures. • Using 2D unit cell surrogate 3D honeycomb structures. • CDAE with a pixelation strategy is proposed to manage FE data. • LSTM uses latent features and external loads to predict structural dynamic responses. In this study, a novel framework was presented for accelerating the prediction of the mechanical response of honeycomb structures under dynamic crushing, using 2D cells to surrogate 3D honeycomb structures by machine learning (ML). The sizes of different honeycomb structures were designed and the necessary training data obtained through finite element (FE) simulations, but without using any explicit design parameters of the honeycomb cells in the ML model. A pixelization method of FE model was proposed to separate the complete cell structure from the honeycomb FE grid data and convert it into a matching pixel map. FE data was structuralized while reducing the large amount of computational power consumed in identifying complex array structures. Unsupervised automatic extraction of low-dimensional features of pixel maps was performed using a convolutional denoising autoencoder (CDAE). The crushing velocity and the extracted latent features were used as the input of the long-short term memory (LSTM) network to predict the crushing deformation and stress-strain curve of the honeycomb structure under different dynamic loading. Results showed that the constructed ML model could describe the dynamic crushing response behavior. Compared with the traditional FE method, the prediction model was 4.45 × 103 and 1.05 × 103 times faster in predicting the stress-strain and structural deformation response, respectively. The mechanical response prediction model provided a method for rapidly evaluating the dynamic mechanical response behavior of similar periodic array structures using FE model data, which could be beneficial for the design and development of equipment based on bionic structures. The superior performance of honeycomb structure has facilitated its extensive application in various fields. In this paper, a novel honeycomb structure is proposed, which exhibits zero Poisson's ratio behavior. Firstly, the in-plane mechanical properties are analyzed based on the classical Castigliano's theorem to obtain expressions connecting the three elastic constants of the structure and geometric parameters. Then, the theoretical expressions are verified by homogenized finite element methods and 3D-printed experimental models, which help to determine the relationship between the in-plane mechanical properties and the geometric parameters. The results show that the mechanical properties of the honeycomb structure can be tailored by changing the geometric parameters, while ensuring that the zero Poisson's ratio property is maintained within a relatively small fluctuation range. Aluminum alloy honeycomb structures were designed based on origami technology, and the specimens were fabricated by a new fabrication technology (i.e. a press and folding process). In folding process, a new folding device was successfully developed to achieve automatic fabrication of honeycomb structure. To prove the practicability of developed device, the honeycomb cores with claws were fabricated by this device, which were used to compare the mechanical properties with that bonded by common adhesive. The deformation behaviors and mechanical properties of honeycomb structures were investigated by the flatwise compressive test and three-point bending test. The load–displacement curve obtained at the room temperature showed that the load increased to a peak value and then tended rapidly to a constant. Besides, the deformation process approximately categorized into three zones, namely linear-elastic zone, plastic-plateau zone, and densification zone. The experimental results suggested that regardless of specimen type, the bending stiffness and compressive strengths were approximately 0.32 KN·m2and 0.39 MPa, respectively; revealing the bonded method by aluminum claws did not dramatically affect the mechanical properties of honeycomb structure. Abstract Photonic graphene, a photonic crystal with honeycomb structures, has been intensively studied in both theoretical and applied fields. Similar to graphene which admits Dirac Fermions and topological edge states, photonic graphene supports novel and subtle propagating modes (edge modes) of electromagnetic waves. These modes have wide applications in many optical systems. In this paper, we propose a novel gradient recovery method based on Bloch theory for the computation of topological edge modes in photonic graphene. Compared to standard finite element methods, this method provides higher order accuracy with the help of gradient recovery technique. This high order accuracy is desired for constructing the propagating electromagnetic modes in applications. We analyze the accuracy and prove the superconvergence of this method. Numerical examples are presented to show the efficiency by computing the edge mode for the P -symmetry and C -symmetry breaking cases in honeycomb structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Crashworthiness parameters of aluminum hexagonal honeycomb structures under impact loads are investigated by using finite element methods and conducting experiments. To validate the finite element models, numerical results are compared with experimental measurements and theoretical results reported in literature. In numerical simulations of honeycomb structures, out-of-plane loads are considered while the aluminum foil thickness, cell side size, cell expanding angle, impact velocity and mass are varying, and dynamic behavior and crashworthiness parameters are examined. It is observed that there are good agreements between numerical, experimental and theoretical results. Numerical simulations predict that crashworthiness parameters depend on cell specification and foil thickness of the honeycomb structure and are independent of impact mass and velocity. Abstract: This paper presents a study of the impact resistance of honeycomb structure with the purpose to mitigate impact forces. The objective is to aid in the choice of optimal parameters to minimize the thickness of the honeycomb structure while providing adequate protection to prevent injury due to head impact. Studies are presented using explicit dynamic finite element analysis representing the case of an unprotected drop of a rigid impactor onto a simulated floor consisting of vinyl composition tile and concrete. Analysis of honeycomb material to reduce resulting accelerations is also presented where parameters such as honeycomb material modulus, wall thickness, cell geometry and structure depth are compared to the unprotected case. A simplified optimization analysis technique using a genetic algorithm is presented to demonstrate the use of this method to select a minimum honeycomb depth to achieve a desired acceleration level at a given level of input energy. It is important to select a minimum material depth in that smaller dimensions lead toward more aesthetic design that increase the likelihood that the device is used. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Progressive deformation of honeycomb structures subjected to in-plane loading was approximately analyzed by using the collapse modes of hexagonal unit cells. The collapse modes were categorized as freely compressive, restricted compressive, and shear. Moreover, there were five characteristic deformation patterns, namely deformation bands. Average stresses of the collapsing honeycomb models were evaluated in terms of the plastic collapse stress per hinge and total number of hinges of progressively arising deformation bands. The displacements of the models were obtained by multiplying the displacement per cell with the number of collapsed cells. The present method was used to analyze progressive deformation of typical honeycomb structures. The validity of the stress-displacement relations derived for some structures was confirmed by comparing them with finite element method (FEM) results. For a honeycomb structure used for absorbing crash energy and protecting the safety of human or instruments, the bigger the specific energy absorption (SEA) is, the more popular it would be when the peak crushing stress (σp) was retained small enough. In order to improve the energy absorption capacity, crashworthiness optimization for honeycomb structures with various cell specifications are studied in this paper. Detailed numerical models are established for those honeycomb structures by using an explicit finite element method code LS-DYNA. The numerical simulation results are then used as the design samples for constructing metamodels. The optimal Latin hypercube design (OLHD) method is employed for the selection of sampling design points in the design space, and the polynomial functions, radial basis functions (RBF), Kriging, multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), and support vector regression (SVR) are utilized to formulate the two optimal objectives SEA and σp. It is found that the polynomial function is the most efficient in constructing the crashworthiness metamodels of honeycombs among the above-mentioned methods. Then, the polynomial function models of SEA and σp are chosen as the surrogate models in the crashworthiness optimization. In order to further validate the polynomial function models, the polynomial function models of SEA and σp are compared with the analytical solutions based on Wierzbicki's theory and Kunimoto and Yamada's theory, respectively. An excellent correlation has been established. As such, the multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm (MOPSOA) is applied to obtain the Pareto front of SEA with σp of the honeycomb structures with various cell specifications, which has resulted in a range of optimal designs of honeycomb structures by the multi-objective optimization. Abstract: The in-plane impact behavior of honeycomb structures randomly filled with rigid inclusions was studied by using the finite element method to clarify the effect of inclusions on the deformation process, mean stress, densification strain, and absorbed energy. The deformation processes of the models were disturbed by inclusions; shear bands were pinned, and the cell regions surrounded by inclusions were shielded. Mean stress, densification strain, and absorbed energy per unit volume normalized by the values of the model without inclusions were found to be only dependent on the fraction of inclusions. As the volume fraction of inclusions increased, the normalized mean stress linearly increased and the normalized densification strain linearly decreased. The normalized absorbed energy per unit volume could be approximated by an inverted parabolic equation. The energy absorption of models with inclusions having volume fractions from 0 to 0.25 was larger than that of the models without inclusions. In particular, honeycomb models with fractions of inclusion from 0.1 to 0.2 exhibited the maximum absorbed energy. The model with a volume fraction larger than 0.4 could not be compressed because the inclusions in the model had already percolated before deformation. The in-plane impact behavior of honeycomb structures as energy absorbing materials can be designed by using the approximate equation and selecting the volume fraction of inclusions. To participate in Student Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) competitions, it is necessary to build an impact attenuator that would give an average deceleration not to exceed 20g when it runs into a rigid wall. Students can use numerical simulations or experimental test data to show that their car satisfies this safety requirement. A student group to study formula cars at the Korea University of Technology and Education has designed a vehicle to take part in a SAE competition, and a honeycomb structure was adopted as the impact attenuator. In this paper, finite element calculations were carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of the honeycomb attenuator. Deceleration and deformation behaviors were studied. In order to avoid the stress shielding phenomenon in orthopedic bionic bone implantation, it is necessary to consider the design of mechanical compatible implants imitating the host bone. In this study, we developed a novel cancellous bone structure design method aimed at ensuring the mechanical compatibility between the bionic bone and human bone by means of computer-aided design (CAD) and finite element analysis technology (specifically, finite element modeling (FEM)). An orthogonal lattice model with volume porosity between 59% and 96% was developed by means of CAD. The effective equivalent elastic modulus of a honeycomb structure with square holes was studied by FEM simulation. With the purpose of verifying the validity of the cancellous bone structure design method, the honeycomb structure was fabricated by selective laser sintering (SLS) and the actual equivalent elastic modulus of the honeycomb structure was measured with a uniaxial compression test. The experimental results were compared with the FEM values and the predicted values. The results showed that the stiffness values of the designed structures were within the acceptable range of human cancellous bone of 50–500 MPa, which was similar to the stiffness values of human vertebrae L1 and L5. From the point of view of mechanical strength, the established cellular model can effectively match the elastic modulus of human vertebrae cancellous bone. The functional relationship between the volume porosity of the nylon square-pore honeycomb structure ranging from 59% to 96% and the effective elastic modulus was established. The effect of structural changes related to the manufacture of honeycomb structures on the equivalent elastic modulus of honeycomb structures was studied quantitatively by finite element modeling.
