Large, rarely mobile boulders are observed globally in mountainous bedrock channels. Recent studies suggest that high concentrations of boulders could be associated with channel morphological adjustment. However, a process‐based understanding of large boulder effects on channel morphology is limited, and data are scarce and ambiguous. Here, we develop a theory of steady‐state channel width and slope as a function of boulder concentration. Our theory assumes that channel morphology adjusts to maintain two fundamental mass balances: (a) grade, in which the channel transports the same sediment flux downstream despite boulders acting as roughness elements and (b) bedrock erosion, by which the channel erodes at the background tectonic uplift rate. Model predictions are normalized by a reference, boulder‐free channel width and slope, accounting for variations due to sediment supply, discharge, and lithology. Models are tested against a new data set from the Liwu River, Taiwan, showing steepening and widening with increasing boulder concentration. Whereas one of the explored mechanisms successfully explains the observed steepening trend, none of the models accuratly account for the observed width variability. We propose that this contrast arises from different adjustment timescales: while sediment bed slope adjusts within a few floods, width adjustment takes a much longer time. Overall, we find that boulders represent a significant perturbation to fluvial landscapes. Channels tend to respond by forming a new morphology that differs from boulder‐free channels. The general approach presented here can be further expanded to explore the role of other hydrodynamic effects associated with large, rarely mobile boulders. Plain Language Summary: Large boulders are a significant feature in mountainous landscapes. Recent studies suggested that boulders residing in rivers interfere with the flow and sediment transport, forcing their geometry, specifically width and slope, to change. Our ability to understand and predict such changes is challenged by scarce field data and a general lack of models capable of explaining the processes underlying channel geometry adjustment in the presence of boulders. Here, we develop a theory and several models for the variation of channel width and slope as with channel boulder coverage. Our theory builds on the assumption that the geometry of boulder‐bed channels evolves to a new configuration to maintain steadiness of erosion rate and sediment transport. Predictions from the various models are tested against data from the steep Liwu River in Taiwan. These data show that width and slope increase with more boulders. We find that channel slope increases to overcome the greater resistance to sediment transport due to the boulders. In contrast, the scattered nature of the width data and the overall models inability to explain width variability likely reflect a longer adjustment period for width than for slope. This study demonstrates the important role of boulders in shaping landscapes. • Contour currents with different physical natures observed over a drift-moat system • High SSC on the drift due to long-range sediment transport by contour currents • High SSC in the moat due to moat wall erosion by tidal-induced secondary flows • Formation of drifts forced by upslope sediment transport of tidal currents Contourite drifts are ubiquitous sedimentary features in the world′s oceans, and their formation are usually ascribed to sedimentation from contour currents. However, in-situ observations of contour currents and their associated sedimentary processes were inadequate. Here, we present mooring observation results from a drift-moat contourite system in the South China Sea to gain insight into its sediment dynamics and formation mechanism. We found that quasi-persistent contour currents develop in the moat, on and below the drift, yet subject to diverse physical oceanographic processes. High suspended sediment concentrations observed on the drift mainly occur in winter, induced by high levels of sediments transported by contour currents from Taiwan. In the moat, however, high suspended sediment concentrations are mostly caused by erosion of the moat wall during periods of strong tidal currents and low shear variance. Such results underscore the complexity of current patterns and sedimentary processes across various topographic units in the drift-moat contourite system. A novel formation mechanism of the contourite drift is thereby proposed, wherein sediment transport by contour currents brings materials for constructing the drift, while its formation is driven by near-critical reflection and upslope transport of sediments by tidal currents. Extreme erosion events can produce large short‐term sediment fluxes. Such events complicate erosion rates estimated from cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in river sediment by providing sediment with a concentration different from the long‐term basin average. We present a detrital 10Be study in southern Taiwan, with multiple samples obtained in a time sequence bracketing the 2009 Typhoon Morakot, to assess the impact of landslide sediment on 10Be concentrations (N10Be) in river sediment. Sediment samples were collected from 13 major basins, two or three times over the last decade, to observe the temporal variation of N10Be. Landslide inventories with time intervals of 5–6 years were used to quantify sediment flux changes. A negative correlation between N10Be and landslide areal density indicates dilution of N10Be by landslide sediment. Denudation rates estimated from the diluted N10Be can be up to three times higher than the lowest rate derived from the same basins. Observed increases imply that, 3 years after the passage of Typhoon Morakot, fluvial channels still contain a considerable amount of sediment provided by hillslope landslides during the event. However, higher N10Be in 2016 samples indicate that the contribution from landslide sediment at the sampled grain size has decreased with time. The correlation between changes in N10Be and landslide area and volume is not strong, likely resulting from the stochastic and complex nature of sediment transport. To simultaneously evaluate the volume of landslide‐derived sediment and estimate the background denudation rate, associated with less impulsive sediment supply, we constructed a sediment‐mixing model with the time series of N10Be and landslide inventories. The spatial pattern of background erosion rate in southern Taiwan is consistent with the regional tectonic framework, indicating that the landscape is evolving mainly in response to the tectonic forcing, and this signal is modified, but not obscured by impulsive sediment supply. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. • Mudstone deposits behave like noncohesive sediments in terms of erosion resistance. • High erosion resistance of laterites cannot be predicted merely by particle size. • Shields' parameter predicted by water content, clay content, and plasticity index. Soil erosion and sedimentation are major factors in landscape evolution and river morphology. The erosion resistance of sediments plays an important role in landscape evolution processes because it determines the threshold of an acting force at the initiative sediment motion, and the amount of sediment transports. This study examined the sediment properties and their correlations to the erosion resistance of mudstone deposits and laterites, which are two representative natural cohesive soils in hill and terrace topography in Taiwan. Soil physical properties and pore water chemical properties, and the erosion resistance were investigated and determined using laboratory tests and hydraulic flume experiments, respectively. Investigations of sediment properties showed that the mudstone deposits and laterites had significant differences in median particle size, soil texture, level of plasticity, internal structure, and pH value and electrical conductivity of their aqueous slurry. Results from the hydraulic flume experiments showed that the laterites had stronger erosion resistance, indicating by larger values of critical shear stress and the Shields' parameter, than the mudstone deposits. Through the stepwise multiple regression analysis, a quantitative equation was proposed to estimate the Shields' parameter using fine sediment properties including water content, clay content, and the plasticity index expressed in decimal fractions, of the two soils. Despite more experiments of the two natural soils with different ranges of the sediment properties are needed to validate the empirical equation for predicting the Shields' parameter, the proposed methodology provides an essential reference in which erosion resistance is an important parameter. The extra sediment load induced by typhoons and rainstorms in the Heshe River, Taiwan, are the principal reason for severe sediment-related disasters. The total sediment load during Typhoon Morakot in 2009 was 31 × 10 m, accounting for 95% of the annual sediment discharge. Large amounts of sediment load entered the Hoshe River, causing the braiding index (BI) to increase. Subsequently, the BI became positively correlated with the channel width in the Hoshe River. The specific typhoon and rainstorm events decreased after Typhoon Morakot, the sediment input decreased, inducing the fluvial morphology of the braided river to develop into a meandering river. The extra sediment load induced the deposition depth to increase and produce a headward deposition in the main channel and its tributaries. In addition, the river bend and the topographical notch restrained the sediment from moving downstream and being stored locally, indirectly increasing the erosion density of the river banks from 2.5 to 10.5 times. Abstract: Analysis of typhoon- and earthquake-triggered landsliding and fluvial response in the Tachia River, central Taiwan, documents highly episodic sediment supply over decade to century timescales. Landslide data from the Chi-Chi earthquake (1999) and subsequent typhoons (2001, 2004, and 2005) quantify the sediment supply from these events. Fluvial response was investigated by decadal-scale and century-scale longitudinal river profile data spanning 1904 to 2008 and by sediment delivery recorded in suspended sediment load and reservoir sedimentation data. Our results show that the different time periods of satellite images and aerial photographs used in previous studies make it difficult to unambiguously identify the causes of landslides previously attributed by some studies to the effects of the Chi-Chi earthquake rather than subsequent high intensity precipitation. In response to significant variability in sediment delivery from hillslopes, century-scale profile variation data indicate substantial bed surface elevation change of 2.6±6.7m, and decade-scale bed surface elevation change of 1.1±3.3m. Since 1993, the downstream reaches incised in response to bedload sediment trapping by reservoirs while headwater reaches aggraded in response to increased sediment delivery from uplands. A tremendous increase in reservoir sedimentation after 2000 likely reflects the effects of the highest decade-average daily rainfall since 1900. Suspended sediment load data indicate a post Chi-Chi earthquake increase in sediment concentration in low-flow events but do not exhibit the clear influence on sediment yields at higher flows as (e.g., typhoons) reported by others for fluvial response in the epicentral region. Abstract: Landslides play an important role in the evolution of mountain topography and are a major source of sediment in tectonically active mountain belts. For the active orogeny of Taiwan, erosion rates have been assessed by various methods. The discrepancies observed between erosion rates integrated over modern and Quaternary time scales may result from various effects related to surface processes. More process-oriented research on the spatio-temporal distribution of hillslope processes and coupling relationships with the fluvial system is needed to reconcile the temporally heterogeneous data in the future. This paper assesses and describes the processes of subsequent erosion on hillslopes via a time series of topographic surveys of hillslopes after the initial failure in order to better understand the temporal and spatial variability of landslide erosion, sediment fluxes, and storage of landslide sediment within channels. The results demonstrate that hillslope-channel coupling is controlled by the relative frequency of erosive flooding events and the magnitude of rainfall-driven hillslope processes. The latter is assumed to be disproportionately high on larger failures in periods with less rainfall. Mass wasting may only affect part of the total failure’s area. Volumes of eroded sediment from gullies on the landslide scar may be as high as the volume estimated for the initial failure. The geometry of the sliding masses eroded after the initial failure appears to be uniform, and their depths average 6.1 ± 2.2 m. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Many rivers in Taiwan have steep slopes, are subject to typhoon-induced flood flows, and contain soft bedrock that is exposed at many locations and easily erodible. The occurrence of extensive bedrock erosion has been a major threat to river infrastructure at many locations. Soft bedrock erosion, therefore, is an important process to consider for river projects in Taiwan. In this study, bedrock erosion models are reviewed. A specific model is proposed by combining two existing models incorporating both the hydraulic and abrasive scour mechanisms. The proposed bedrock erosion model is incorporated into a two-dimensional mobile-bed model, and the integrated model is tested by simulating bedrock erosion downstream of the Chi-Chi weir on the Choshui River in Taiwan. A calibration study is performed to determine appropriate values of the model parameters based on two and a half years of measured data. The model is then assessed based on a verification study that compares model predictions of bedrock erosion of the same reach to two additional years of measured data. The bedrock erosion model is found to be suitable for the river reach studied. Further improvement, however, is still necessary, which points to potential future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Large earthquakes deform the Earth''s surface and drive topographic growth in the frontal zones of mountain belts. They also induce widespread mass wasting, reducing relief. The sum of these two opposing effects is unknown. Using a time series of landslide maps and suspended sediment transport data, we show that the MW7.6 Chi-Chi earthquake in Taiwan was followed by a period of enhanced mass wasting and fluvial sediment evacuation, peaking at more than five times the background rate and returning progressively to pre-earthquake levels in about six years. Therefore it is now possible to calculate the mass balance and topographic effect of the earthquake. The Choshui River has removed sediment representing more than 30% of the added rock mass from the epicentral area. This has resulted in a reduction of surface uplift by up to 0.25m, or 35% of local elevation change, and a reduction of the area where the Chi-Chi earthquake has built topography. For other large earthquakes, erosion may evolve in similar, predictable ways, reducing the efficiency of mountain building in fold-and-thrust belts and the topographic expression of seismogenic faults, prolonging the risk of triggered processes, and impeding economic regeneration of epicentral areas. The purpose of this paper is to develop an unsteady 2D depth-averaged model for nonuniform sediment transport in alluvial channels. In this model, the orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system is adopted; the transport mechanisms of cohesive and noncohesive sediment are both embedded; the suspended load and bed load are treated separately. In addition, the processes of hydraulic sorting, armoring, and bed consolidation are also included in the model. The implicit two-step split-operator approach is used to solve the flow governing equations and the coupling approach with iterative method are used to solve the mass-conservation equation of suspended sediment, mass-conservation equation of active-layer sediment, and global mass-conservation equation for bed sediment simultaneously. Three sets of data, including suspension transport, degradation and aggradation cases for noncohesive sediment, and aggradation, degradation, and consolidation cases for cohesive sediment, have been demonstrated to show the rationality and accuracy of the model. Finally, the model is applied to evaluate the desilting efficiency for Ah Gong Diann Reservoir located in Taiwan to show its applicability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We discuss the present-day sediment transport by rivers, and hence the erosion rate in upstream basins, based on the example of Taiwan Rivers where large datasets are available. After data correction, the values of the suspended sediment load in the lower Kaoping River are nearly three times smaller than those from the literature. On the other hand, we add the bed load evaluated from numerical modelling, despite limitations from data and models. Whereas the contribution of the chemical denudation rate in Taiwan is minor, the bed load is significant and must be evaluated. We point out that biases in data collection may favour high values of suspended load data, and that large series of datasets are needed to reduce uncertainties and smooth the time variability effect. The Kenting Plateau is characterized by unusual low relief surfaces that straddle the topographic crest of the northern Manila accretionary prism off southern Taiwan at 400–700 m water depth. Multibeam bathymetric data, reflection seismic data, Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data, surface grab samples, and sediment cores were collected in and around the Plateau to identify evidence of erosion in the Kenting Plateau and understand how the morphological evolution has been influenced by submarine erosion over geological time scales. The most distinctive feature on the Kenting Plateau is a 3 km × 7 km bean-shaped flat elevated platform (Kuroshio Knoll) revealed by multibeam bathymetry. Seismic data show almost no reflections beneath the seafloor and erosional truncations at the seafloor, especially in the Plateau's eastern half, evidencing widespread erosion. The P-wave velocity of the gravels recovered from the top of the Plateau ranges from 2.2 to 4 km/s. After comparing the velocity with the borehole data from nearby basin the burial depth of the parent rocks was found to be around 2 to 4 km below the seafloor, indicating that the parent rocks have been uplifted and gravels were formed due to erosion of the Plateau. The truncation of the seafloor shown on seismic sections suggests significant erosion on the Plateau. Sand content of the sediment cores decreases away from the Plateau, suggesting that sediment transport is effective in this area with high energy deposition, thereby accumulating coarse sediments on the Plateau and removing fine particles away from it. The presence of a dune field migrating northward of the Plateau, parallel to the Kuroshio Current also evidences active sediment transport in the area. Flow velocity of the Kuroshio Current observed from the ADCP data is very high, reaching up to 1.8 m/s on top of the Kuroshio Knoll (SE domain). We thus interpret that the observed intense erosion is caused by the Kuroshio Current, while the uplift of the Kenting Plateau is partially due to isostatic rebound caused by sediment removal through erosion and compression of the accretionary wedge. The higher sedimentation rate and coarser in grain size during sea level lowstand (20,000–12,000 yrs. BP) suggests that the erosion was more intense during the glacial period compared to that of deglacial period (< 12,000 yrs. BP) as seen from the MD97–2145 core. Submarine erosion is predominant throughout the Plateau, and it controls the geomorphology of the Plateau, especially the Kuroshio Knoll. • Ocean current plays an essential role in shaping ocean floor. • Observed Kuroshio Current in the Kenting Plateau is up to 1.8 m/s. • Intense Kuroshio Current shaped the Kuroshio Knoll into flat topped elevated surface. • The parent rocks of the gravels were buried 2 to 4 km below the seafloor. • Decrease in grain size and sand content away from the Plateau indicates the Plateau acts as source for the sand.
