The perennial herb Western Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium occidentale, Polemoniaceae) is widespread in the mountains of western North America but reappears as a disjunct in the Great Lakes Region in Minnesota and Wisconsin, USA as the narrow endemic P. occidentale subsp. lacustre. This distribution is shown by a diverse assemblage of angiosperms. It has been hypothesized that these species became isolated just after the Last Glacial Maximum, but this has not been tested. Additionally, the genetic diversity and population connectivity of the endemic Great Lakes flora has been understudied, with important conservation implications. Using genotyping‐by‐sequencing, we examined the relationship of P. occidentale subsp. lacustre to its closest relatives, relationships among all known populations, and genetic diversity within these populations. Polemonium occidentale subsp. lacustre represents an isolated, unique lineage that diverged from its closest relatives 1.3 Ma and arrived in the Great Lakes Region by at least 38 ka. Nearly all extant populations diverged prior to the Last Glacial Maximum, are genetically distinct, and show little within‐population genetic diversity. Clonality may mitigate reduction in diversity due to drift. Mixed population signal between Wisconsin and some Minnesota populations may be due to gene flow during the Late Pleistocene. While populations of P. occidentale subsp. lacustre may be relictual from a now extinct western relative, it is best treated as a distinct species. Conservation efforts should focus more on ensuring that current populations remain rather than maintaining large populations sizes across a few populations. Nelumbo lutea Wild. (American lotus) has a broad and changing geographical distribution that is influenced by human transplanting and changes to climate, hydrology, and habitat. Populations vary from extensive stands where the species appears to be an effective colonizer, to sites where the species has declined or appears to have been extirpated. Previous studies in apparently stable populations from central and southern United States revealed low genetic diversity within and between populations. In this study, we assess genetic diversity at the northern edge of N. lutea 's range where it is often imperiled. A total of 489 individuals in 25 populations collected in Upper Mississippi River regions in Minnesota and Wisconsin were amplified in 12 microsatellite loci. Ten microsatellite loci indicated significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg principal and were utilized for further analysis. Generally, genetic diversity was low compared to the genetic studies from southern North America. Despite low levels of genetic differentiation (Fst range; 0.003–0.059), structure and UPGMA analysis indicated the possibility of two distinct clusters and slight admixture in some populations. Initial low genetic diversity in populations was likely caused by founder effect if few individuals were established at each site. Limited migration and clonal growth contribute to the continued low diversity. Abstract: With growing pressure for conservation to pay its way, the merits of compensation for wildlife damage must be understood in diverse socio-ecological settings. Here we compare compensation programs in Wisconsin, USA and Solapur, India, where wolves (Canis lupus) survive in landscapes dominated by agriculture and pasture. At both sites, rural citizens were especially negative toward wolves, even though other wild species caused more damage. Wisconsin and Solapur differ in payment rules and funding sources, which reflect distinct conservation and social goals. In Wisconsin, as wolves recolonized the state, some periodically preyed on livestock and hunting dogs. Ranchers and some hunters were more likely to oppose wolves than were other citizens. The Wisconsin compensation program aimed to restore an iconic species by using voluntary contributions from wolf advocates to pay affected individuals more for wolf losses than for other species. By contrast, wolves had been continuously present in Solapur, and damages were distributed amongst the general populace. Government-supported compensation payments were on offer to anyone suffering losses, yet claims registered were low. There were no significant differences in attitudes of any particular segment of the population, but those losing high value livestock applied for compensation. Residents at both sites did not report (Wisconsin) or expect (Solapur) a change in attitude towards wolves as a result of compensation, yet they support the existence of such programs. To assess the merits of any compensation program, one must disentangle the multiple goals of compensation, such as reducing wolf killing or more fairly sharing the costs of conserving large carnivores. The costs of wildlife conservation distribute unequally across society. Compensation can potentially redress inequities and raise local tolerance for endangered wildlife that damage property. However, the rules for payments generate controversy, particularly as costs mount and species recover. In Wisconsin (USA), gray wolf damage payments grew notably over 28 years and eventually undermined budgets for conserving other endangered species. We measured attitudes to compensation among 1,364 state residents, including those who voluntarily contributed funds and those likely to receive compensation, and we interviewed elected officials about the politics of payment rules. Most respondents endorsed compensation for wolf damages to livestock-even when wolves are no longer endangered-but opposed payments for wolf damage to hunting dogs on public land. Most donors opposed killing wolves and over one-fourth unconditionally rejected a wolf hunt. We predict the latter donors would stop contributing funds for compensation if the state were to implement a proposed wolf hunt. Controversy over payment rules reveals clashing values regarding wildlife between those receiving and those paying for compensation. Moreover, the costs of compensation ratchet up as endangered species recover and claims of entitlement expand. The invasion of non-native earthworms ( spp.) into a small number of intensively studied stands of northern hardwood forest has been linked to declines in plant diversity and the local extirpation of one threatened species. It is unknown, however, whether these changes have occurred across larger regions of hardwood forests, which plant species are most vulnerable, or with which earthworm species such changes are associated most closely. To address these issues we conducted a regional survey in the Chippewa and Chequamegon national forests in Minnesota and Wisconsin (U.S.A.), respectively. We sampled earthworms, soils, and vegetation, examined deer browse in 20 mature, sugar-maple-dominated forest stands in each national forest, and analyzed the relationship between invasive earthworms and vascular plant species richness and composition. Invasion by was a strong indicator of reduced plant richness in both national forests. The mass of juveniles was significantly and negatively related to plant-species richness in both forests. In addition, was a significant factor affecting plant richness in a full model that included multiple variables. In the Chequamegon National Forest earthworm mass was associated with higher sedge cover and lower cover of sugar maple seedlings and several forb species. The trends were similar but not as pronounced in Chippewa, perhaps due to lower deer densities and different earthworm species composition. Our results provide regional evidence that invasion by species may be an important mechanism in reduced plant-species richness and changes in plant communities in mature forests dominated by sugar maples. This article provides information on the U.S. resorts befriending some endangered turtle species. Developers of the Spring Green resort, near Madison, Wisconsin, designed the fourth fairway of a planned golf course to avoid the nesting site of some endangered ornate box turtles after a local resident and Nature Conservancy land steward, Gigi La Budde, warned them of the turtles presence. In Hawaii, the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel worked with Sea Life Park Hawaii to husband four juvenile green sea turtles through their first 10 months before releasing them into the ocean on July 4, 1990. The hotel staff raised the turtles from infancy, when they are likeliest to perish in the open sea, to adolescence. The program, which kept the hotel's guests entertained, is similar to other head start efforts like the one on the Gulf of Mexico for the rare Kemp's ridley sea turtle. The loggerhead turtle also may get a small reprieve courtesy of seaside resorts in South Carolina, where the Georgetown County Council has passed an ordinance regulating beachfront lighting to protect nesting sea turtles. The ordinance restricts lighting after 10 p.m. during the turtles' nesting season from May through October.
