The main insulation structure of the valve‐side winding of converter transformer bears the effect of AC and DC superimposed voltage during operation. The electric field intensity in the pressboard is much higher than that in the pressboard in the AC transformer. This condition increases the probability of failure of insulation structure. Therefore, the design and optimization of the main insulation structure of the valve‐side winding are keys to ensure the stable operation of converter transformer. This study establishes a model of the main insulation structure of the valve‐side winding of the ±1100 kV converter transformer. The influence of the insulating oil–paper configuration on the electric field distribution of the main insulation structure of the valve‐side winding is analysed, and then, an optimization idea is proposed. The oil–paper configuration includes two aspects: oil–paper insulation structural design and combination selection, that is, the influence of typical oil–paper structural design parameters and the aging state of different oil–paper combinations on the electric field distribution. The application of vibration-based condition monitoring methods to power transformers has shown the potential for detecting mechanical transformer failures. The ageing of winding insulation paper, which is a common problem in long-serving power transformers, affects both the electrical and mechanical strength of the windings. This paper is concerned with the vibration features of winding disks with aged insulation paper. The vibration characteristics of single-layer winding disks wrapped with insulation paper are investigated. By examining the vibration frequency responses of winding disks with different degrees of ageing of insulation paper, the effects of aged paper on the vibration behaviors of winding disks are demonstrated. The experimental results show that changes in the vibration responses of winding disks can be related to the ageing of insulation paper, and thus it is possible to detect this failure mode in a power transformer using a vibration-based method. This paper proposes and evaluates two robust sheet tension estimation algorithms based on unwind and rewind variables, respectively. The proper sheet tension estimation is guaranteed by a continuous monitoring of the differences between the actual estimated values and the values predicted from the last calibration of the estimation parameters. The evaluation was performed with the aid of a developed winder emulator that allowed the offline testing in a real-time field environment, including the initial setting of the estimation constants, and evaluation of both four- and six-shipping-roll cycles. The sheet tension estimation results confirm the precise and stable operation of the proposed robust estimation algorithms, in tests conducted with signals from a winder model, and with tests involving actual field signals from an operational winder. In astrodynamics, orbit cranking is usually referred to as an interplanetary transfer strategy that exploits multiple gravity-assist maneuvers to change both the inclination and eccentricity of the spacecraft osculating orbit without changing the specific mechanical energy, that is, the semimajor axis. In the context of a solar sail-based mission, however, the concept of orbit cranking is typically referred to as a suitable guidance law that is able to (optimally) change the orbital inclination of a circular orbit of an assigned radius in a general heliocentric three-dimensional scenario. In fact, varying the orbital inclination is a challenging maneuver from the point of view of the velocity change, so orbit cranking is an interesting mission application for a propellantless propulsion system. The aim of this paper is to analyze the performance of a spacecraft equipped with an Electric Solar Wind Sail in a cranking maneuver of a heliocentric circular orbit. The maneuver performance is calculated in an optimal framework considering spacecraft dynamics described by modified equinoctial orbital elements. In this context, the paper presents an analytical version of the three-dimensional optimal guidance laws obtained by using the classical Pontryagin's maximum principle. Currently, excessive AC loss in the rectangular winding motor used for electric vehicles poses a significant challenge, necessitating effective measures to suppress the losses. This paper focuses on the Prius IV motor, employing a finite element two-dimensional model established using JMAG software. The influence of conductor material and the number of rectangular winding layers on motor AC loss under various operating conditions is thoroughly analyzed. Maintaining a constant number of rectangular winding layers, aluminum (Al) conductors replace copper (Cu) conductors in 2-layer, 4-layer, 6-layer, and 8-layer configurations, respectively. AC losses are compared among motors with 4-layer, 6-layer, 8-layer, and 10-layer Cu rectangular windings, all having identical slot dimensions. Subsequently, the 10-layer Al conductor scheme is chosen to optimize motor design. The results demonstrate an average reduction in AC loss up to 59.24% after motor optimization, further reducing motor manufacturing costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An Electric Solar Wind Sail (E-sail) is a propellantless propulsion concept that extracts momentum from the high-speed solar wind stream to generate thrust. This paper investigates the performance of such a propulsion system in obtaining the transition from a prograde to a retrograde motion. The spacecraft is assumed to initially trace a circular heliocentric orbit of given radius. This particular trajectory, referred to as Circular Orbit Flip Trajectory (COFT), is analyzed in a two-dimensional mission scenario, by exploiting the capability of a medium-high performance E-sail to change the spacecraft angular momentum vector during its motion in the interplanetary space. More precisely, the paper describes a procedure to evaluate the E-sail optimal performance in a set of COFTs, by calculating their minimum flight times as a function of the sail reference propulsive acceleration. It is shown that a two-dimensional COFT can be generated by means of a simple steering law in which the E-sail nominal plane has a nearly fixed attitude with respect to an orbital reference system, for most of the time interval of the interplanetary transfer. The nature and causes of corrosive sulfur induced failures are examined in oil-filled transformers and shunt reactors. Copper sulfide, which is formed when the corrosive sulfur in a mineral oil reacts with the copper conductors, is likely to diffuse into the paper tapes insulating the conductors. Since copper sulfide is partially conducting, the dielectric losses of the contaminated oil-impregnated-paper tapes are markedly increased; paper tapes in close proximity to the copper conductors are found to attain tan 5 values > 1.0 even at room temperature. It is highly likely that thermal instabilities develop at those sites at operating temperatures, leading to increased loss currents and, ultimately, short circuits between the turns. This sequence of events is substantiated by evidence from the field, which indicates large areas of thermally degraded insulations and charred breakdown regions along the coils, the extent of which becomes more pronounced at higher operating temperatures (toward the top of the windings). The Internet of Things (IoT) is introduced in systems with electrical machines, such as in electric drive systems, wind energy generating systems, and small and special machines, to remote monitor and control the operation for data acquisition and analysis. These systems can integrate with the equipment and retrofit the existing installations. At the end of the control loops there are always motors, or actuators, of big or small ratings, of rotating or linear movements, electrical or nonelectrical, which must produce the motion. This article analyses selected aspects of research and applications of IoT-based control in electric drive systems and of wind energy conversion systems with induction machines. Various applications and study cases of control systems of electrical machines with IoT technology are described. With the IoT-based control of induction machine systems operators can remotely monitor parameters and obtain accurate real-time feedback during fast changing duty cycle operation. Thus, IoT creates multipurpose instruments in the remote control of induction machines. The paper offers a comprehensive analysis of IoT-based control applications in the field of induction machines, with technical details of design, construction, experimental testing, and prototyping, that are useful to energy engineering specialists in the sector of electric drives and wind energy conversion systems. Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) has been in use since the last decade as a sensitive method for detecting transformer internal defects. This study is focused on the influence of temperature and moisture migration on the FRA response of transformer winding. It also discusses the feasibility of FRA capability in moisture diffusion recognition in transformer paper insulation. To conduct this study, a single phase model transformer involving concentric LV and HV windings and a 20/0.4 kV, 1.6 MVA threephase two windings transformer are taken as test objects. Experiments are carried out at different temperature and moisture conditions. FRA spectra are then recorded and analyzed. FRA spectra deviations as well as total capacitance variations due to the temperature and moisture changes in the test objects are calculated. Karl-Fischer Titration (KFT) is utilized to monitor the moisture migration within oil and paper insulations. Furthermore, a mathematical model is used to simulate one of the test object windings and verify the experimental result, and also clarify the main reason of FRA spectrum deviation in this circumstance. Finally, statistical indices in FRA evaluation are calculated to explore their capability in FRA spectrum interpretation once the moisture content of paper insulation is changed. According to the conventional winding configuration of distribution transformers, denoted as L-H, the low voltage (LV) winding is located internally and the high voltage (HV) winding is located externally. This paper proposes a new winding configuration, denoted as H-L configuration, according to which the location of windings is interchanged, that is, the HV winding is located internally and the LV winding is located externally. In the designs of transformer analyzed in this paper, the HV winding is manufactured with copper conductors and the LV winding with aluminum sheets. We have modified our transformer design program to analyze the new H-L configuration. Transformers ratings from 30 to 112.5 kVA are considered to show the cost reduction trend. The H-L and L-H configurations are compared on the basis of the following parameters: mean length of HV winding, mean length of LV winding, weight of HV conductor, weight of LV conductor, material cost, and total owning cost. As a result of the proposed design change, transformer manufacturers save material and reduce cost. In this paper, improvement of torque quality and magnetic losses of a concentrated winding high-speed permanent magnet (PM)-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMaSRM) that can operate in the wide speed range are investigated. Optimization studies have been carried out to enhance the torque quality. In addition, ac copper losses in the stator coils and iron losses in laminations at high frequencies have been investigated. Since the PMaSRM can operate in a wide constant power-speed range, the field weakening performance has also been investigated. The motor performance results of the PMaSRM at both no-load and on-load conditions are examined by using Flux 2-D FEA software. Coreless axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines are attracting increasing attention due to their compact structure and high torque density. The torque to weight ratio can be further enhanced by the use of alternate conductor materials, such as carbon nanotube (CNT), or aluminum windings in place of the copper material coils. This paper proposes a coreless AFPM synchronous motor with CNT windings. Analytical equations are developed to allow a systematic comparison of machine designs with different conductor materials. The performance of machine designs with different coil materials, namely, copper, aluminum, and CNT, is evaluated and compared. The calculations are also backed by 3-D finite-element analysis. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of a robotic spacecraft, whose primary propulsion system is an electric solar wind sail (E-sail), in a mission to a heliostationary point (HP)—that is, a static equilibrium point in a heliocentric and inertial reference frame. A spacecraft placed at a given HP with zero inertial velocity maintains that heliocentric position provided the on-board thrust is able to counterbalance the Sun's gravitational force. Due to the finite amount of storable propellant mass, a prolonged mission toward an HP may be considered as a typical application of a propellantless propulsion system. In this respect, previous research has been concentrated on the capability of high-performance (photonic) solar sails to reach and maintain such a static equilibrium condition. However, in the case of a solar-sail-based spacecraft, an HP mission requires a sail design with propulsive characteristics that are well beyond the capability of current or near-future technology. This paper shows that a medium-performance E-sail is able to offer a viable alternative to the use of photonic solar sails. To that end, we discuss a typical HP mission from an optimal viewpoint, by looking for the minimum time trajectory necessary for a spacecraft to reach a given HP. In particular, both two- and three-dimensional scenarios are considered, and the time-optimal mission performance is analyzed parametrically as a function of the HP heliocentric position. This paper studies the effect of the stator winding short-circuit fault on the Induction Motor performance at no-load and load condition. The comparison of the results obtained by simulation tests allowed verifying the precision of the proposed Matlab model. The simulation of three-phase induction motor performance under stator winding single-phase short circuit fault and stator winding phase-to-phase short circuit fault condition is presented. The induction machine model with balance parameters (healthy machine) such as windings inductance and resistance, and that with unbalanced parameters (unhealthy machine) due to winding short circuit fault were presented and simulated with the help of MATLAB® and the simulated results compared. The results show appreciable reduction in the performance of this machine when such faults occurred. To protect the life of the machine, there should be a protective device/circuitry to protect the machine against unbalance voltage which occurs due stator winding short circuit faults. This paper outlines a method using finite-element analysis (FEA) to model the magnetization process of a small brushless surface-magnet three-phase motor with isotropic ferrite magnets and concentrated windings. This is aimed at allowing in situ magnetization using the three-phase machine winding. Radial magnetization is the nominal manufactured magnetization pattern; however, the in situ method leads to a variation in the magnetization pattern, and the performance is examined using open-circuit simulations. The properties of the magnet material (a ferrite 5 type) are examined in order to simulate the magnetization. Bulk magnetization Hs\-sat levels for ferrite type 5 indicate that a 10-kOe field is required. In this paper, localized magnetization is examined using FEA, and it is measured in actual rotors by examination of the surface flux density when removed from the stator. Methods for deriving the approximate back electromotive force from both the FEA and the surface measurements are put forward; these show a reasonable correlation. The use of magnetization functions allows the magnetization pattern to be applied to the simulations. This paper uses a standard manufactured machine to carry these out. A variable inductor consists of a magnetic core, primary dc windings, and secondary ac windings. The effective inductance of the secondary ac winding can be controlled by the primary dc current because of its nonlinear magnetic characteristic. Hence, variable inductors can be applied as a reactive power compensator for voltage stabilization in electric power systems, and have desirable features such as a simple and robust structure, low cost, and high reliability. In a previous paper, a concentric-winding-type three-phase variable inductor with a 2-D structure has been proposed. It was demonstrated that the 2-D variable inductor has good controllability and a low distortion current. To further increase productivity and reduce costs, this paper presents a novel concentric-winding-type three-phase variable inductor with a 3-D structure. It is demonstrated that the leakage flux of the proposed 3-D variable inductor is reduced by more than 30%. Furthermore, a 6.6 kV–100 kVA 3-D variable inductor is designed and compared to its 2-D counterpart. It is proved that eddy current loss, which is induced within an oil-immersed self-cooled tank because of leakage flux from the variable inductor, can be reduced to one-third of that of the 2-D variable inductor. Vernier permanent magnet (VPM) machines for direct-drive applications are receiving more and more attention due to its small pulsating torque, high torque density at low rotation speed. This paper proposes a novel VPM machine, which has two stators and a sandwiched rotor. The outer stator is a conventional stator with three-phase windings and semi-closed slots, and the inner stator has an iron core and PMs mounted on the surface of it. The rotor has a consequent-pole structure with Halbach-array PMs. In this paper, the operation principles and the feasible slot-pole combinations of the proposed machine are analyzed. Moreover, to verify the superior performances of the proposed VPM machine, it is compared with a regular VPM machine in terms of back electromotive force, average torque, pulsating torque, power factor, efficiency, and overload capabilities. Power converters generate switching common mode voltage (CMV) through the pulse width modulation (PWM). Several problems occur in the drive systems due to the generated CMV. These problems can be dangerous to the insulation and bearings of the electric machine windings. In recent years, many modulation methods have been developed to reduce the CMV in multiphase machines. Symmetrical nine-phase machines with single-neutral are considered in this paper. In this case, conventional PWM uses eight active vectors of different magnitudes in combination with two zero states in a switching cycle, and this generates maximum CMV. This paper proposes two PWM schemes to reduce the CMV in such a system. The first scheme is called active zero state (AZS). It replaces the zero vectors with suitable opposite active vectors. The second scheme uses ten large active vectors during switching and is called SVM-10L. Compared with conventional strategies, the AZS reduces the peak CMV by 22.2%, and the SVM-10L reduces the peak CMV by 88.8%. Moreover, this paper presents a carrier-based implementation of the proposed schemes to simplify the implementation. The transfer between two coplanar Keplerian orbits of a spacecraft with a continuous-thrust propulsion system is a classical problem of astrodynamics, in which a numerical procedure is usually employed to find the transfer trajectory that optimizes (i.e., maximizes or minimizes) a given performance index such as, for example, the delivered payload mass, the propellant mass, the total flight time, or a suitable combination of them. In the last decade, this class of problem has been thoroughly analyzed in the context of heliocentric mission scenarios of a spacecraft equipped with an Electric Solar Wind Sail as primary propulsion system. The aim of this paper is to further extend the existing related literature by analyzing the optimal transfer of an Electric Solar Wind Sail-based spacecraft with a Sun-facing attitude, a particular configuration in which the sail nominal plane is perpendicular to the Sun-spacecraft (i.e., radial) direction, so that the propulsion system is able to produce its maximum propulsive acceleration magnitude. The problem consists in transferring the spacecraft, which initially traces a heliocentric circular orbit, into an elliptic coplanar orbit of given eccentricity with a minimum-time trajectory. Using a classical indirect approach for trajectory optimization, the paper shows that a simplified version of the optimal control problem can be obtained by enforcing the typical transfer constraints. The numerical simulations show that the proposed approach is able to quantify the transfer performance in a parametric and general form, with a simple and efficient algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An air-core strip-type high-voltage pulse transformer (HVPT) features a relatively simple structure in terms of design and fabrication. However, this HVPT requires considerable attention to prevent dielectric breakdown between the conductor windings. Because each spiral winding must be very thin, the field enhancement at the edges of the windings is very high. Therefore, it is important to develop proper methods to reduce the field enhancement factor and to prevent the dielectric breakdown at the winding edges. In this paper, in order to minimize the field enhancement, the proposed HVPT winding edges were folded, and each winding width was designed to decrease gradually to form a reverse trapezoid. These windings were insulated by multilayer insulators arranged in a specific manner. The requirement specifications are a maximum input voltage of 50 kV and an output voltage of 400 kV. This paper describes a design process and an electric field analysis to reduce the field enhancement. The simulation and experimental results confirmed the validity of the fabricated HVPT. This paper presents a numerical method for calculating the resistance, inductance, and capacitance matrices of transformer windings. Importance of their precise calculation is shown in the simulation of voltage distribution over the windings for a lightning-impulse test. The results obtained in frequency domain analysis are in good agreement with the measurement data. All the parameters are calculated using the self-developed solvers, the theory and the novelty of which are described in this paper. Although the concept of a multiphase drive system dates back to the middle of the 20th century, the initial pace of development was rather slow, as witnessed by the first two surveys of the area published in the beginning of this century. However, considerably new developments have resulted in the last decade of the 20th century and the beginning of this century, leading to an authoritative survey of the asymmetrical six-phase drive control and subsequently of the review of the complete area. This also initiated the organization and subsequent publication of the first IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics "Special Section on Multiphase Machines and Drives" in May 2008, which commenced with another survey paper, and that contained 12 original research papers. Since the publication of this Special Section in May 2008, the level of interest and pace of developments in the area have further accelerated and substantial new knowledge has been generatedwith an ever-increasing number of published research papers and reported new industrial applications. Such a trend has been emphasized in a recent paper. It therefore seemed appropriate to revisit the area and organize this Special Section as a sequel to the first one. The call for the Special Section papers resulted in 51 submissions, almost twice as many as the total back in 2008, thus confirming a substantial growth of the area. Indeed, the amount of new knowledge acquired since the publication of the first Special Section in 2008 has meant that it was not possible to provide a complete and thorough survey of the field in a single review paper. This paper reviews briefly the history of paper and pressboard insulation being used for electric insulation of oil immersed power transformers. An introduction to today's insulation technique is given. Important details of materials selection, as well as drying, clamping and oil impregnation procedures required to achieve short-circuit resistant windings are explained. Aging effects are described, as they gradually weaken the solid insulation mechanically and electrically. The value of post-mortem analysis of transformers before scrapping is shown with examples. Undetected open conductor condition is a threat to the safe operation of power plants and industrial facilities. Open conductor condition is especially difficult to detect in a system with certain ${{{\bf Y}}_{{\boldsymbol g}}}$ connected primary windings, unloaded transformers. This paper presents a novel open conductor condition monitoring scheme for such systems. The scheme utilizes natural voltage disturbances as test signals and detects the open conductor condition by analyzing the responses of the transformer neutral current to these signals. A detection criterion is established based on sequence domain circuit analysis and on considering background voltage unbalances. Implementation issues, including the hardware requirements and the overall monitoring algorithm, are discussed. This paper presents the comparative study of coreless-type permanent magnet linear synchronous machines with non-overlapping windings. An analytical expression that can be applied to any combinations of pole and coil numbers is developed for evaluating the electromagnetic performances. Subsequently, a simple factor called thrust factor is introduced to find the best ${\boldsymbol{C}_{\boldsymbol{pp}}}$ family depending on the variation of coil width ratio. From the comparative study, a significant result is reported that ${\boldsymbol{C}_{\boldsymbol{pp}}} = 1/4$ , i.e., multiple 4-pole/3-coil, is the best non-overlapping winding configuration of coreless-type permanent magnet machines owing to the highest value of thrust factor. This paper proposes an application of a new electric motor topology named ring-winding axial flux machine (AFM) for rim-driven thruster of ship propulsion system. Ring-winding AFM has many advantages, such as reliability, simple construction, ease of increasing phase numbers, and pole numbers, which are important for marine application. In rim-driven thruster, the electric motor is fitted in the duct surrounding propeller so that electric motor and propeller are integrated into one unit. Due to this integration, the electric motor design is more affected by the design of propeller and hull. This paper presents a new method to determine electric motor specifications considering propeller and hull. Design methodology and constraints are presented for the ring-winding AFM as well. To prove the concept of the proposed topology, confirm manufacturability, and substantiate validity of three-dimensional (3-D) FEM simulations, a small-scale prototype is fabricated and tested. Furthermore, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for determining electric motor specifications, a case study is done for Nordhavn 52 ship. Inrush currents in transformers can have very disruptive effects, such as voltage sags, false tripping of the protective devices, and mechanical stresses in the transformer windings. This paper shows that there are operating situations that may cause a transformer to draw abnormally high inrush currents. Examples include the normal operation of offline uninterruptible power-supply (UPS) systems, interruptions, voltage sags, and notching. These conditions may produce inrush-like currents of more than twice the value of the “normal” maximum inrush caused by energizing at voltage zero-crossing. For this condition, the term “phase-hop” is used in this paper. Laboratory experiments were performed on four different transformers (1 kVA) with varied characteristics and show the impact of phase-hop in the magnitude of inrush currents. The experiments are also used to validate the Electromagnetic Transients Program model used for the analysis of multiple cases. In addition, the behavior of the magnetic flux in a transformer under phase-hop is investigated and compared with different operating conditions using finite elements. This paper proposes a novel open-winding brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (OW-BDFRG) with dual two-level converters in order to reduce the converter rating and switching frequency for large-scale wind turbine applications. The new converter topology is equivalent to a three-level converter directly connected to the control winding of typical BDFRG. The OW-BDFRG system with this topology structure requires lower converter rating and switching frequency, and has a more flexible control mode, better operation performance, and fault redundancy capability. For the OW-BDFRG, this paper also proposes a new control scheme combining direct power control (DPC) with sliding mode variable structure (SMVS) control to implement the power tracking. The voltage-vector switching table of DPC is redesigned according to the error signals of active and reactive powers of the power winding, as well as the sector location of control winding flux. The active and reactive powers of the OW-BDFRG can be directly decoupled and independently controlled by properly selecting the switching voltage vectors. The novelty of this paper lies in an OW-BDFRG topology driven by dual two-level converters to improve the system characteristics, and the use of SMVS control to improve the DPC accuracy and robustness to parameter variations. Coreless axial flux machines are of interest because of the absence of stator core losses and cogging torque. These machines generally employ concentrated windings. One of the challenges with such a winding is that the torque producing MMF component that corresponds to the fundamental of the magnet excitation is accompanied by substantial asynchronous components. These harmonics cause losses in the rotor core and magnets, which can become significant at high speeds. This paper proposes a new multilayer winding arrangement to eliminate the non-torque producing MMF components. This winding is applied to a 12-coil 16-pole coreless axial flux machine. Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) technique is commonly used to assess the mechanical integrity of power transformer core and windings. A few papers investigating the ability of FRA technique to detect bushing faults and transformer oil degradation can be found in the literatures. However, in all of these papers, only magnitude of the FRA signature along with visual analysis was used for fault identification and quantification which may lead to inconsistent conclusions for the same FRA signature when interpreted by various personnel. As such, there is an essential need to standardize and automate the FRA interpretation process to improve its reliability and accuracy. This paper is taking a step forward toward this goal through presenting a new FRA interpretation approach by incorporating the magnitude and phase angle plots of the measured FRA signature into one polar plot that comprises more features than the conventional magnitude plot currently used for fault diagnosis. Moreover, the proposed polar plot facilitates the application of digital image processing techniques (DIP) to automate and standardize the whole process. The new proposed technique is assessed through its application to detect minor transformer bushing faults and insulating oil degradations. In this regard, two transformers of different ratings, winding structure and physical dimensions are simulated using 3D finite element analysis to implement various levels of transformer bushing faults and oil degradation. The obtained FRA polar plots of the two investigated transformers under various bushings and oil health conditions are manipulated using the developed DIP codes to investigate the impact of each fault type / level on the proposed polar plot signature. Also, Practical measurements are performed to validate simulation results and evaluate the feasibility of the proposed technique. The vibration characteristics of stators of bearingless switched reluctance motors (BSRMs) are analyzed based on finite-element method (FEM) in this paper. Aiming at to overcome the limitations of the previous modal analysis in which the influence of stator windings on the natural frequencies of switched reluctance motors (SRMs) stators is treated simply as an additional mass, the finite-element (FE) model of a 12/8-pole BSRM stator which takes torque windings and suspension windings in account is constructed based on its real structural model. In this paper, a kind of method is proposed to connect the windings and stator core as well as torque windings and suspension windings through the contact whose type is bonded. The 3-D modeling technique presented in this paper, predicts, with high accuracy, electromagnetic fields and corresponding dynamic effects in conducting regions for rotating machines with slotless windings, e.g., self-supporting windings. The presented modeling approach can be applied to a wide variety of slotless winding configurations, including skewing and/or different winding shapes. It is capable to account for induced eddy currents in the conductive rotor parts, e.g., permanent-magnet (PM) eddy-current losses, albeit not iron, and winding ac losses. The specific focus of this paper is to provide the reader with the complete implementation and assumptions details of such a 3-D semianalytical approach, which allows model validations with relatively short calculation times. This model can be used to improve future design optimizations for machines with 3-D slotless windings. The main contribution of the paper is the analysis of processes and the evaluation of the effectiveness of fault-tolerant PMEM with electro-magnetic winding shunting, including the winding shunt location on the back of the stator magnet guide. This paper presents studies of the electric motors with permanent magnets with turn-to-turn short circuits protection using an electromagnetic shunt. Studies are performed on a low-power electric generator, which is designed to generate electricity on an unmanned aerial vehicle. At the same time, in contrast to the well-known works, two installation sites of an electromagnetic shunt are considered: on the stator's back (this method has been not considered in the literature before). Then the electromagnetic wedge and the most efficient installation site of the electromagnetic shunt are selected. For this task, computer models and experimental samples for both variants are created, whose studies in various operating modes are also given in the paper. Zeroth mode of vibration is investigated in low-speed high-torque surface-mounted permanent magnet (PM) machines with non-overlapping concentrated windings. Magnetic field distribution in the air gap is computed using time-stepping finite-element analysis, and Maxwell stress tensor is then employed to calculate the radial force density. Based on the time variation of the mean value of the radial force density spatial distribution, the zeroth-order radial forces are studied. Simple structural equations are used to compare the stator deformations for the machines under investigation. Contribution of the zeroth mode to produce vibration is analyzed and compared with the lowest non-zero mode. The influence of pole and slot combinations and the effect of rectifier load are discussed. This paper deals with the design and testing of an interior permanent-magnet (IPM) machine that exhibits advanced features. It adopts fractional-slot (FS) nonoverlapped coil windings that reduces the end winding length, i.e., the Joule losses and machine cost. As a consequence, higher rated current can be supplied so that higher torque density and higher efficiency in a wide operating region can be reached. The rotor saliency increases the performance in flux-weakening operating region and the fault-tolerance capability. In order to decrease the torque ripple, it is important to minimize the interaction between the magnetomotive force (MMF) harmonics due to the stator currents and the rotor anisotropy. To do that, the winding has been optimized so as to minimize the MMF harmonics, taking advantage from the higher degree of freedom of the four-layer winding. However, the so-called slot-harmonics cannot be minimized by rearranging the winding coils. Hence, the rotor geometry has been designed so as to minimize the impact of such slot-harmonics. There are benefits if copper windings are replaced with aluminum in applications that are cost- and mass-sensitive, such as automotive traction; these include the low cost of aluminum, low mass of aluminum, and the ease of motor recycling at the end of life. However, the relatively low electrical conductivity of aluminum compared to copper needs to be overcome. Precompressed motor coils have been shown to produce very high fill factors ($ > 75\%$), reducing dc-winding losses, therefore enabling the use of aluminum conductors. However, the single-stranded conductors used can be prone to high ac losses due to skin and proximity effects. Therefore, a method of manufacture of precompressed coils made from stranded/Litz wire is needed, allowing ac losses to be reduced to low levels. This paper presents various experimental tests on the sensorless capability of induction motors (IM). An intentionally created saliency is introduced in the rotor so as to allow the rotor position to be estimated by means of a high-frequency (HF) injected signal in the stator winding. Experimental measurements are carried out on three prototypes, two with saliency and the third without saliency, as reference. The critical aspects in the prototype realization are discussed in this paper. Suggestion on how to solve them from the machine design point of view is included. The rotor saliency has been measured by means of an HF injection. Then, the steady-state performance has been measured, together with the mechanical characteristic of the three prototypes. This paper develops an approach that is capable of accurately predicting the performance of synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs). The SynRMs receive increasing attention and have been used in many industrial applications. The 2-D finite element analysis (FEA) is usually considered to be competent for design and analysis of SynRMs. However, the power factor of SynRMs is likely to be considerably overestimated. This would then lead to an underestimation of current required and cause problems for the design of electronic drivers. Compensation should be made to improve the accuracy of the analysis for SynRMs although there does not seem to be a solution put forward so far. The research in this paper shows that the exclusion of end turn leakage inductances in 2-D analysis is a key factor to cause such a significant difference. To resolve this problem, this paper analytically calculates the end turn leakage inductance, which is then incorporated into the 2-D FEA. Multi-phase permanent magnet (PM) motors are becoming more popular because of their higher torque densities, enhanced efficiency, and fault-tolerant capabilities. In this paper, a novel six-phase PM synchronous motor with a new asymmetric stator ac winding scheme and placement is proposed. Two identical dual three-phase asymmetrical winding sets are placed in two separate half of the stator in 180 mechanical degrees. This approach reduces the phase resistance and thus copper losses. Torque quality of the proposed motor is also analyzed using 2-D finite element method in detail. Using experiments by Sanya (18.3°N, 109.6°E) Incoherent Scatter Radar (SYISR) during 22 days, we first obtained the line‐of‐sight ion velocity in multiple directions, further calculated three‐dimensional vector velocity through least squares fitting, and subsequently derived northward neutral wind and electric fields from 150 to 500 km based on the momentum equation. In order to verify the reliability of the derived northward neutral wind and electric field, we used NCAR‐TIEGCM and HWM for comparative analysis. They had a good consistency in terms of diurnal variation and direction. The SYISR vertical ExB velocity during the daytime is larger than that of TIEGCM, and the direction reverses occur after 20:00 for both TIEGCM and SYISR. We further compared our wind data with that of ICON satellite. They showed a positive correlation of ∼0.62. We also used the ∆H method to verify our eastward electric field. They showed a roughly linear dependency, although the correlation coefficient is not very high. Plain Language Summary: In the low latitude ionosphere, neutral wind drives ions moving across the geomagnetic field line and generates electric field. Therefore, neutral wind and electric field are two key drivers in low latitude ionospheric dynamics. Monitoring both parameters is important for low latitude ionosphere investigation. Electric Solar Wind Sails (E-Sails) are a new type of spacecraft propellantless propulsion system that gathers its energy from solar wind protons and is potentially useful for interplanetary missions. Although optimal interplanetary trajectories have been the subject of thorough research, the substantial variability of the solar wind necessitates the adoption of active guidance strategies, an area that has received significantly less scholarly attention. This paper proposes guidance algorithms for E-Sails based on Model Predictive Control (MPC), a modern control methodology based on online re-planning of the trajectory. To this end, first, properties of E-sail time-optimal orbits are studied applying Pontryagin's Minimum Principle, and then time-optimal orbits for missions to Mars and Jupiter are computed via direct transcription methods. Next, solar wind perturbations are modeled, posing a challenging saturation problem due to their high variability. Guidance strategies based on Shrinking Horizon and Receding Horizon Model Predictive Control (RHMPC) are developed, analyzed and compared using Monte Carlo simulations, successfully implementing MPC to E-sail guidance. The technology of Internet of Things (IoT) can be integrated with systems of electrical machines, for electric drives and wind and solar generation systems, and advance controlling and monitoring. This work presented recent research and progress of electrical drives with IoT technology, regarding design, operation, and trial of the control system for induction motors (ΙΜ). Also, the developed software code and hardware units for speed control were detailed and the results obtained from tests of performance of the ΙΜ integrated with IoT were described. With the IoT integration set-up, the operator can control the frequency values, obtain real-time feedback of the process, and monitor the system during varying loads in steady state. The operation of the ΙΜ system driven by inverter and its monitoring over IoT was proven to have high-accuracy speed control and increased efficiency at supersynchronous speeds. Thus, IoT establishes potentials to become a multipurpose tool in the industrial control of electric drives. This paper investigates the effects of loading and slot harmonic on radial magnetic forces in a low-speed permanent magnet (PM) machine with non-overlapping concentrated windings. Vibration level of the PM machines with concentrated windings can be potentially higher compared with that of the traditional machines with distributed windings. It is mainly due to the presence of low-order spatial harmonics in radial force density distribution. In this paper, magnetic flux density distribution in the air-gap of a 120-slot/116-pole machine is computed using finite-element method. Maxwell’s stress tensor method is then employed to calculate radial and tangential forces in the air-gap. Flux density and radial and tangential force distributions are studied in different loading conditions and the effect of d - and q -axis currents are investigated. It is shown how the lowest mode of vibration is produced by different harmonic pairs in the flux density. It is found that d -axis current significantly changes the amplitude of the lowest spatial harmonic of the radial force distribution and consequently the vibration behavior. The main reason is found to be the changes in the amplitude of the slot harmonic, which is heavily affected by loading. Experimental tests are carried out to compare the vibration level of a PM generator supplying resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads. This paper presents a new transverse flux permanent magnet machine. In a normal transverse flux machine, complicated 3-D flux paths often exist. Such 3-D flux paths would require the use of soft magnetic composites material instead of laminations for construction of the machine stator. In the new machine topology proposed in this paper, by advantageously utilizing the magnetic flux path provided by an additional rotor, use of laminations that allow 2-D flux paths only will be sufficient to accomplish the required 3-D flux paths. This paper deals with an effective reduction method of torque ripple by adopting novel asymmetric pole structure of wound-field synchronous motor. In general, skewed pole structure of a rotor is used to reduce torque ripple despite decreasing an average torque. This paper introduces the design parameter of shift angle of an asymmetric pole-plate for effective elimination of torque ripple. In addition, the design can maintain the length of field winding compared with skewed pole structure, which means low copper loss in field winding and low material cost. In addition, average torque can be increased at the same input voltage over the driving region as well. The 2-D finite element method is used for the analysis of proposed model and skewed model.
