One of the issues of macroeconomic analysis in recent years has been trying to empirically identify the factors causing fluctuations in economic aggregates. This work investigates the sources of macroeconomic fluctuations using a structural VEC approach and quarterly data for Argentina's economy, covering the period 1980:1-2009:1. To this effect, the paper imposes short and long run restrictions to the SVEC model, and identifies four structural shocks: term of trade, aggregate supply, aggregate demand and nominal prices. The results show that terms of trade shocks have a positive effect on real GDP, and that the main sources of output fluctuations are aggregate supply shocks. Further, external price shocks and aggregate demand shocks would be, in principle, the most important ones to explain real exchange rate fluctuations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study analyzes the asymmetric causality between tourism development and economic growth for the period 1995–2016 in 9 emerging countries. Kónya [2006. Exports and growth: Granger causality analysis on OECD countries with a panel data approach. Econometric Modelling, 23(6), 978–992] panel causality test results indicate that there is no causality between tourism development and economic growth. However, the asymmetric panel causality test, which examines hidden causality between variables, shows that there is causality from the positive shocks of tourism development to the positive shocks of economic growth in Argentina and Turkey. In terms of negative shocks, causality is determined only for the Philippines from tourism development to economic growth. These results denote that the hidden tourism-led growth hypothesis is valid in Argentina, Turkey, and the Philippines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article develops an econometric model in order to study country risk behaviour for six emerging economies (Argentina, Mexico, Russia, Thailand, Korea and Indonesia), by expanding the country beta risk model of Harvey and Zhou (1993), Erb et al. (1996a, b) and Gangemi et al. (2000). Towards this end, we have analysed the impact of macroeconomic variables, especially monetary policy, upon country risk, by way of a time-varying parameter approach. The results indicate an unstable effect of monetary policy upon country risk in periods of crisis. However, this effect is stable in other periods, and the Favero-Giavazzi effect is not verified for all economies, with an opposite effect being observed in many cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article develops a model of the trade balance based on the long-run determinants of the excess supply of tradables, with the dynamic structure of the model being determined from the data on the quarterly trade balance for the period 1970-82 in Argentina. It presents the "excess supply of tradables" model used in the study and reports the main econometric results for the formulation. The article records the corresponding findings concerning the "monetary approach" model and analyses the results of the encompassing tests.
