The current analytical techniques for characterizing printing and graphic arts substrates, particularly those used to date and authenticate provenance, are destructive. This limits the amount of data that can be captured from an individual sample. For samples being evaluated in forensic and archeological investigations, any loss or degradation of the materials is undesirable. Furthermore, it is difficult to produce statistically relevant data for such analytes. We have shown elsewhere that a contactless microwave resonant cavity dielectric spectroscopy technique can discriminate between paper samples made from different plant fiber species based on their lignin content. In this publication, we demonstrate the utility of the contactless resonant cavity dielectric spectroscopy (RCDS) technique in the characterization of naturally and artificially aged paper samples. Paper-basedpentacene organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with spin-coated gelatin (G) stacked gate dielectric layers, the Au/pentacene/G/G matrix-embedded iron (FeG)/Al/paper structure, were fabricated. The proposed composite-stacked bio-dielectric layer can be implemented using solutions with the degradable biomaterials. These materials enable a large-area printing of use-and-throw devices. Control devices (Au/pentacene/G/Al and Au/pentacene/FeG/Al structure) were also fabricated for comparison. High-performance paper-based OTFT constructed from the stacked gate dielectric layer exhibited a carrier mobility of 8 cm2/Vs, an ON/OFF current ratio of approximately 103, a subthreshold swing of 0.6 V/decade, and a threshold voltage of −1.4 V. These results are compatible to those OTFTs fabricated on other substrates. A kind of paper-based composite was prepared with short carbon fibers (CFs) and para-aramid fibrids through the process of papermaking. The dielectric properties of the paper-based composites at microwave frequency were investigated. Based on the Lichtenecker Rule, the dielectric constants of CFs in composites at different CF concentrations were calculated. The absorbing performances of paper-based composites were calculated from the test results of electromagnetic parameters. It was shown that for the composites loaded with 1 mm CFs, the real part of complex permittivity rises at first then tends to be stable with the increase of the CF content, and the imaginary part rises at first then falls slightly, while for composites loaded with 3 or 6 mm CFs, both the real and imaginary part of complex permittivity grows at first and then falls rapidly with the CF content increasing. When the CF content is below 10 wt%, the composites containing longer CFs have larger permittivity at the same concentration. The Lichtenecker Rule is found to be not suitable for the system studied in this paper, especially when the content of CFs is high. The variations of reflectance and absorbance with the content of CFs generally have analogous trends . It is also found that to achieve better absorbing performance, the length and content of CFs together with the thickness of composites should be considered. In this study, the lowest reflection loss at 10 GHz reaches –27.59 dB when the paper-based composite is loaded with 1 mm CFs at the concentration of 10 wt% and the optimum thickness of 1.84 mm. In this paper, the influence of partial discharges (PD) on the subsequent dielectric properties of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) is investigated. Dielectric frequency response (DFR) of OIP is investigated at varied levels of moisture, thermal aging, temperature, oil conductivity and electrode material, to allow comparison of these influences. It is shown that PD activity inside OIP can significantly change the real and imaginary parts of permittivity of the paper layers, especially in the frequency range below 100 Hz. It is shown that even if the PD activity is concentrated on a few percent of the test sample, the real part of permittivity measured on the entire sample after a few tens of hours of PD activity can increase up to 10 times at very low frequencies (∼ 1 mHz) and the imaginary part of the permittivity can increase up to 100 times at low frequencies (∼ 1 Hz). The change of the real and imaginary parts of permittivity due to PD activity is permanent. It is very similar to the change caused by thermal aging, and somewhat similar to the change caused by moisture and higher oil conductivity. It is also shown that the dissipation factor of OIP in contact with copper and brass increases, even in the absence of PD, but contact with aluminum and stainless steel has no influence on DFR of OIP. Beeswax, a natural nontoxic biological material, is used as the gate dielectric of flexible low-voltage indium–zinc-oxide (IZO)-based homojunction thin-film transistors (TFTs) on paper substrates. A high specific capacitance of 5 \mu \textF /cm2 is measured at 1 Hz in the beeswax film due to the electric-double-layer effect. The current ON/OFF ratio, subthreshold swing, and field-effect mobility of the IZO-based TFTs on paper substrate are estimated to be 7.6\times 10 ^6 , 86 mV/decade, and 14.6 cm2 /Vs, respectively. In addition, our results demonstrate that the flexible oxide-based TFTs on paper substrate show a good stability after 3000 times bending and 30 days aging testing. This paper studied the impact of moisture on the correlated characteristics of the condenser bushings oil-paper insulation system. The oil-impregnated paper samples underwent accelerated thermal aging at 130 °C after preparation at different initial moisture contents (1%, 3%, 5% and 7%). All the samples were extracted periodically for the measurement of the moisture content, the degree of polymerization (DP) and frequency domain dielectric spectroscopy (FDS). Next, the measurement results of samples were compared to the related research results of transformer oil-paper insulation, offering a theoretical basis of the parameter analysis. The obtained results show that the moisture fluctuation amplitude can reflect the different initial moisture contents of insulating paper and the mass ratio of oil and paper has little impact on the moisture content fluctuation pattern in oil-paper but has a great impact on moisture fluctuation amplitude; reduction of DP presents an accelerating trend with the increase of initial moisture content, and the aging rate of test samples is higher under low moisture content but lower under high moisture content compared to the insulation paper in transformers. Two obvious "deceleration zones" appeared in the dielectric spectrum with the decrease of frequency, and not only does the integral value of dielectric dissipation factor (tan δ) reflect the aging degree, but it reflects the moisture content in solid insulation. The combination of a dielectric solid (paper) and a dielectric liquid (mineral, vegetable, or silicone) is the most commonly used insulation system in power transformers because of the favorable dielectric properties of these insulations and the high heat capacity of the oil, which allows for cooling. Oil-paper insulation, as a major insulation mode used in power transformers, is continuously and unavoidably subjected to repeated lightning impulses, which may bring potential risk to the insulation system. Therefore, in this work, accumulative effect of repeated lightning impulses and its damage mechanism in oil-impregnated paper (OIP) are investigated. Firstly a repetitive impulse accumulating test platform was set up, and tests were performed to confirm the existence of accumulative effect of repeated lightning impulses. Then atomic force microscope observation and frequency domain spectroscopy were carried out on OIP samples with different times of lightning impulses, based on which the influence of lightning impulses accumulative effect on surface morphology and dielectric properties of OIP was investigated. The results indicate that repeated lightning impulses produce accumulative damage to the OIP and hence lead to the morphology change and generation of translucent gelatinous substance on the sample surface. Both the surface roughness and dielectric parameters increase with the accumulating of repeated lightning impulses, which can be attributed to the effects of polar products, fiber deformation and the translucent gelatinous substance together. The in-service evaluation of moisture in transformer insulation is a very important aspect in the condition assessment of power transformers because moisture in cellulosic materials leads to significant reductions in both dielectric and mechanical strengths by one-half for each doubling of water content [1]. Moisture equilibrium charts provide a quick way of estimating the in-service moisture content of transformer insulations. Knowledge of the moisture distribution within the various materials, which are dependent on diffusion and absorption? desorption processes, are valuable in insulation diagnostics and dry-out processes. Conductive polymers have been studied extensively because of their attractive physical properties, such as conductivity, luminescent performance, and dielectric property. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is one of the most employed conductive polymers for applications, such as a buffer layer of organic electroluminescent devices, due to its high conductivity and electrical stability. In this study, we fabricated a conductive paper coated with PEDOT by direct polymerization onto a paper sheet. The conductive paper exhibited the electrical conductivity of 1.8 S/cm. Scanning electron microscopy images of the conductive paper showed two structures: thin polymer membranes attached to cellulose fibers at the surfaces, and thick polymer sheets extended through the void spaces between the fibers in the inner layers. Consequently, strong interactions between the PEDOT and the cellulose fibers enhanced mechanical properties of the conductive paper. Results of Frequency Domain Spectroscopy measurements are known to be largely influenced by environmental conditions, such as the temperature. Because field measurements, last hours after de-energizing the transformer, the ambient temperature may affect the results. Especially in cold regions of the world, extreme care are required to interpret the results when performing tests at relatively low surrounding temperatures. A better understanding and analysis of the dielectric test results are therefore only possible with a clear understanding of the physical behavior of the insulation system in response to the ambient conditions. In this contribution, the dielectric behavior of a composite oil paper insulation system has been explained from the properties of Debye basic model. A series of experiments have been performed under controlled laboratory conditions with preset moisture content inside the insulation. The equivalent circuit parameters of a laboratory made oil paper condenser bushing model were obtained using a non-linear optimization procedure. Since the dielectric parameters values are geometry dependent, poles, calculated from resistances and capacitances, were used as they are independent of the geometry. The article discusses laminar dielectric capacitors. Historically, laminar dielectrics have dominated commercial capacitor technology because its configuration approximates the ideal parallel plate topology. Technologies employed to produce laminar dielectric capacitors are mentioned. Its capacitor windings are manufactured in a wide variety of configurations with voltage ranging from 25 V to 50 kV, which speeds up its optimal utility for a wide range of winding features.

Results of dielectric response measurements in frequency domain at various temperatures have been presented for oil impregnated paper samples unaged and thermally aged containing various amounts of moisture. The obtained results were used for defining respective master curves and activation energies. Discrepancies of the results for similar samples are also discussed. The use of paper in electrical insulation, especially in power transformers, remains a topical subject. The interest for the insulating paper, despite the emergence of many synthetic materials is ascribed to its low cost price and its ability to an oil impregnation. However its strong hydrophilic character remains the main difficulty for its implementation in electrical insulation. This affinity to water absorption and/or adsorption shows that a good understanding of the moisture effect becomes imperative. Several studies were carried out on the subject but a systematic study of the moisture effect on overall behavior of paper has not been achieved. This work is meant to be a contribution for this systematic investigation. The first step of this study, which is the object of the present article, concerns an examination of time variation of the electrical currents, under dc stress, for different moisture levels. A particular attention is given to the polarization and depolarization currents. These currents are examined during alternate charges and discharges sequences. An increase of the current, during the application of continuous voltage was noticed. This unexpected phenomenon would be related to an electro-dissociation and/or polarization processes. In a multilayer insulator made of two or more materials with different dielectric constants and conductivities, internal space change accumulates at their interfaces. If the local field is increased by the accumulated charge, the electric durability of the insulator should be decreased. In this paper, we describe the space charge accumulation measured when oil-impregnated PPLP (polypropylene laminated paper), which consists of three layers, kraft paper, polypropylene (PP), and kraft paper, was subjected to a strong dc electric field. Dielectric and polarization behaviour of electro-active paper (EAPap) were studied to understand the detailed material behaviour of EAPap as a novel smart material. It was revealed that the dielectric constant of EAPap was temperature and frequency dependent. The largest change in the dielectric constant was observed near 0 degC while the highest dielectric constant was obtained at around 100 degC, which might be related to the dipolar behaviour of the hydroxyl structure of cellulose and adsorbed or existing internal water molecules in cellulose EAPap. By thermal stimulated current measurement for polarization behaviour of cellulose EAPap, it was shown that the maximum current was observed in the temperature range 105-110 degC. Compared with the polarization behaviour in the low temperature range, abnormal polarization was observed under an applied field mainly due to the trapped space charge in EAPap, which indicates that cellulose EAPap has a similar material behaviour to that of electret polymers.
