The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a traditional cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program with an enhanced program incorporating the model of therapeutic engagement (MTE) and extended remote support for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients. In a randomized controlled trial, 88 CABG patients were assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group received integrated MTE cardiac rehabilitation, and assessments were conducted at three time points: pre-CR, one month later, and three months post-CR. The study measured medication adherence (MARS-5) and sense of coherence (SoC-13) scales. The study found no significant differences in demographic factors between the experimental and control groups. However, significant differences were observed in MARS and individuals' SoC scores over time in the experimental group, with notable improvements (p < 0.001). The control group showed significant changes only up to one month. Group effects were evident, with consistent increases in the experimental group's outcomes at each assessment point. Integrating the MTE into CR programs offers benefits in terms of medication adherence and individuals' sense of coherence, which warrants further investigation and clinical implementation. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is recognized as one of the most effective interventions for secondary prevention, but its accessibility is limited in middle-income countries (MICs). Background: Intensive care unit (ICU) patients often experience significant physiological stress. This study evaluated the effect of a defined family visitation protocol on physiological responses in the ICU. Methods: A randomized, block-randomized clinical trial was conducted on 78 ICU patients at Imam Reza Hospital between February 8, 2017, and August 8, 2017. The intervention group received protocol-based visits, and the control group continued with standard visitation. Block randomization was utilized for group assignments. The primary outcome was the measurement of physiological signs using designated monitoring devices. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22, employing independent t-tests, Mann-Whitney U test, repeated measures analysis, and Friedman's test. Results: The results showed no significant differences in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, respiratory rate, and arterial blood oxygen levels between the two groups. However, heart rate in the intervention group was significantly lower in three stages before, during, and after the meaningful visiting (P = 0.008). Conclusion: Protocol-based scheduled family visits in the ICU may reduce physiological stress, as evidenced by a decrease in patients' heart rate. Implementing tailored visitation protocols sensitive to patient preferences and clinical contexts is advisable, suggesting the integration of family visits into standard care practices for enhanced patient outcomes. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of dietary modifications based on complementary and alternative Iranian medicine (CAIM) in patients with secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). Design: In this randomized controlled trial, 70 SPMS patients were randomized to receive either a moderate-nature diet based on Persian medicine (as intervention) or usual diet plus health-related diet recommendations (as control) for 2 months. Serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Global Pain Scale (GPS), Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), anthropometric measurements, and quality of life (QOL) were assessed at baseline and end of trial. Analysis of covariance was performed, and the results were adjusted for potential confounders using SPSS v.14. Results: All participants completed the study for 2 months. There were significant improvements across the mean changes of hs-CRP (−0.1 ± 0.2 mg/L for intervention vs. −0.01 ± 0.13 mg/L for control; padjusted = 0.012), MFIS (−11.0 ± 11.8 vs. −0.7 ± 9.9; padjusted <0.001), GSRS (−19.9 ± 16.3 to 1.2 ± 17.5; padjusted <0.001), GPS (padjusted = 0.032), and QOL (padjusted <0.05). No significant difference was observed across the ESR, EDSS, STAI, and anthropometric measurements. Conclusion: Dietary modifications based on CAIM may improve inflammation and clinical manifestations in SPMS patients. Nonetheless, further trials are required to confirm these findings. Aims Burns and wounds caused by it are a global injury. Finding natural ingredients to accelerate wound healing in patients with fewer side effects could be valuable. This study aimed to determine the effect of oral Centella asiatica extract on the healing of pain and wound of burn in patients. Materials & Methods This study is a clinical trial in which 76 patients hospitalized in the burn department were randomly divided into two intervention (n=38) and control (n=38) groups. The intervention group, in addition to the usual antibiotic treatments, received capsules containing 200mg of Centella asiatica twice daily, and the control group received capsules containing 200mg of starch twice daily. Data collection tools were Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment tool and Visual Analog Scale. Patients' pain and wound healing status were examined at different time of the study. Findings The mean burn pain score showed a significant improvement in the intervention group compared to the control group (p<0.001). The average wound healing score did not show significant improvement in the intervention group compared to the control group (p=0.561). However, size (p=0.023), the degree of destruction of the underlying tissues (p=0.032), the amount of necrotic tissue (p=0.015), and the amount of granulation tissue (p=0.001) improved significantly in the intervention group. In addition, the peripheral tissue edema in the control group decrease significantly compared to the intervention group (p=0.008). Conclusion Oral extract of Centella asiatica reduces pain in burn patients. However, it does not affect wound healing, although it improves some wound healing indicators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this study is to compare the effect of Vitamin D and Vitamin E supplementations, alone, and in combination, on reducing the intensity and duration of dysmenorrhea in women who were referred to the Kowsar gynecological clinics of Shahid Motahari Hospital of Urmia University of Medical Sciences. Materials and Methods: A double-blinded clinical trial was conducted on 112 women with dysmenorrhea who were randomly allocated into the four study groups. Finally, 100 women complete the study and received capsules containing a placebo (n = 25), 1000 IU of Vitamin D (n = 25), 400 mg of Vitamin E (n = 25), and 1000 IU of Vitamin D + 400 mg of Vitamin E (n = 25) every 24 h for 2 consecutive months at the beginning of the menstrual period. The pain intensity and duration among groups were compared before and after the intervention. Results: The mean menstrual pain duration in all three experimental groups (Vitamin E, Vitamin D, and the combination of them) was lower than the placebo group (all P < 0.05), and the mean pain intensity scores in all three experimental groups were significantly lower than the placebo group (all P < 0.05). The results (means) for all of the drugs administered at the end of the 2nd month were better than the 1st month (all P < 0.01). Conclusions: Vitamin E and Vitamin D, as well as their combination, are recommended as an effective and safe treatment for the management of the complications of dysmenorrhea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is considered as the most common complications of chemotherapy which has a detrimental influence on the quality of life of patients with cancer. We assessed the efficacy of Apple (Malus domestica) syrup for reducing CINV. Materials and Methods: This study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial carried out in a Hematooncology Clinic affiliated to Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, Sari, Iran (from October 2017 to August 2018). Subjects were randomly allocated to receive apple syrup or placebo along with their previous antiemetic treatment and chemotherapy regimen, three times a day. Thirty-four patients received apple syrup (n = 16) or placebo (n = 18). Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS software Version 21® (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). A P < 0.05 indicated statistical significance. Results: Both acute and delayed nausea grades were significantly lower in M. domestica syrup in comparison to placebo syrup (P = 0.001 and 0.001, respectively). The duration of nausea (P = 0.04) was lower in intervention group compared to placebo group. Aim: To explore the effects of an educational‐ counselling programme based on the precede–proceed model during pregnancy on preventing post‐partum depression. Design: A randomized clinical trial (RCT) study. Method: 130 pregnant women were selected and randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires of predisposing, reinforcing and enabling factors, GHQ and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). The Education programme was designed and performed in each group in a given weekday through four 60‐minute sessions. The whole intervention lasted for one month in all groups. The participants in the control group were given routine pregnancy care. Data were gathered before and after the intervention in both groups. Results: Independent t test showed a significant difference between the two groups in terms of the mean score of predisposing, reinforcing, enabling factors and post‐partum depression (p <.05). Regression tests indicated predisposing, reinforcing, enabling factors and general health as the most important factors associated with post‐partum depression (p <.05). The results supported the effectiveness of the educational intervention on reducing post‐partum depression and showed that implementing these training during pregnancy leads to a reduced level of post‐partum depression. Objective: To determine the effectiveness and safety of essential oil from Citrus aurantium on anxiety in patients undergoing coronary angiography. Methods: A single-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted in 80 patients experiencing coronary angiography in Imam Ali Hospital in Kermanshah, Iran from April to November in 2016. All patients were randomly divided into intervention and control groups by a random number table, 40 cases in each group. The patients in the intervention group inhaled Citrus aurantium essential oil for 15–20 min about 60 min before angiography. Following the same procedure, distilled water was used instead of Citrus aurantium in the control group. Spielbergers State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was filled in and vital signs including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), respiratory and pulse rate were recorded before and 20 min after the intervention. Adverse reactions after intervention were observed. Results: In the intervention group, the mean scores of STAI, SBP, DBP, respiratory and pulse rate were 53.30 ± 10.13, 134.82 ± 11.75 mm Hg, 84.49 ± 6.99 mm Hg, 17.87 ± 1.73 times/min, and 76.48 ± 12.55 beats/min at baseline and significantly decreased to 42.37 ± 10.15, 124.49 ± 10.48 mm Hg, 79.23 ± 6.62 mm Hg, 14.54 ± 1.43 times/min, and 70.03 ± 13.66 beats/min respectively 20 min after intervention (all P<0.05); however, in the control group, neither anxiety scores nor vital signs changed significantly (P>0.05). All subjects reported no adverse reactions. Conclusion: Inhalation of the essential oil from Citrus aurantium was effective in reducing anxiety and stress levels in patients undergoing coronary angiography. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of administration of the formulated Persian herbal syrup on improving the symptoms of patients with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C). Methods: This study was conducted in 70 patients with IBS-C, who were recruited from 3 medical centers in Mashhad, Iran, from November 2017 to August 2018. Seventy patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups including treatment and placebo groups by block randomization, 35 cases in each group. Patients in the treatment group received 15 mL of anti-IBS syrup, thrice daily for 6 weeks and followed up for 4 weeks. Placebo syrup was also prepared through similar instruction, BP syrup without plant extract was used. Primary outcome induding IBS Symptom Severity Scale (IBS-SSS) questionnaire and secondary outcomes in terms of Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HADS) questionnaires, the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) were completed and evaluated at weeks 6 and 10, respectively. Safety indices were collected at the end of the treatment and Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events v4.0 (CTCAE) was used to evaluate the adverse events. Results: The response to treatment was 84.4% (27/32) in the treatment group and 46.4% (13/28) in the placebo group, respectively (P= 0.002). Compared with pre-treatment, a significant decrease was found on the IBS-SSS and BSFS scores after 6-week intervention in both groups (P<0.001). Moreover, IBS-SSS and BSFS scores in the treatment group were lower than the placebo group after the intervention (P=0.041). There was no significant difference in the anxiety and depression scores after treatment in both groups (P>0.05). Side effects reported in the treatment group included 2 cases of headache during the first week of the onset of the treatment, 1 case of drowsiness, 1 case of increase in menstrual bleeding, which did not result in discontinuation of the treatment. In the placebo group, 1 case of exacerbation of the disease was reported. Conclusions: Anti-IBS syrup significantly reduced the severity of IBS symptoms compared to placebo. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on depressive symptoms in physically disabled persons. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Setting: State welfare organization in Kamyaran, Kurdistan, Iran. Participants: Fifty-two physically disabled participants with a primary diagnosis of depression were randomly assigned to either ACT or control groups. Interventions: Participants in the ACT group (n = 23) received eight weekly 90-minute group sessions based on standard ACT protocol for depression. Participants in the control group (n = 29) received psychoeducation regarding depression. Main measures: Measures were recorded at baseline, eight weeks (end of treatment), and 16 weeks (follow-up). The outcomes were the change in the depressive symptoms, measured by Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), psychological flexibility, emotion regulation, and psychological well-being measured by Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), and Scales of Psychological Well-Being (SPWB), respectively. Results: After eight weeks, significant changes in depressive symptoms was observed in the experimental group (ACT –10.39 ± 0.79 vs control 0.66 ± 0.68, P < 0.001). Compared to the control group, the experimental group also showed significant improvement in psychological flexibility (ACT 8.13 ± 0.52 vs control –0.03 ± 0.51, P < 0.001), adaptive emotion regulation strategies (ACT 10.74 ± 0.62 vs control 0.03 ± 1.03, P < 0.001), and psychological well-being (ACT 66.95 ± 4.01 vs control –1.90 ± 1.04, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Compared with control group, ACT significantly reduced the participants' depression, and changed psychological flexibility, emotion regulation, and psychological well-being in persons with physical disability. Background: Anxiety is a common symptom in patients with the Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), which can threaten their quality of life. This study was done to compare the effects of aromatherapy using lavender and Benson's relaxation technique on the anxiety of patients with ACS. Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 96 patients with ACS were selected using consecutive sampling method from two hospitals in an urban area of Iran. The patients were randomly assigned to three groups of aromatherapy (n=32), Benson's relaxation (n=32), and control (n=32) using the block size of six. The interventions were performed on two consecutive days, once a day for 20 min. Anxiety was measured before and immediately after the intervention using the Spielberger's Anxiety Inventory. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, one-way Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA), Bonferroni post hoc test, and mixed-model repeated-measures ANOVA with a 3*2*2 design by the SPSS V. 16. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in state and trait anxiety scores between the groups after the intervention on different time points (P> 0.05). The time (P=0.001), group-day interaction (P=0.005), and time (pretest and posttest) and day (P=0.029) effect on state anxiety was statistically significant. The time (P<0.001) and the group-day interaction (P<0.001) effect on trait anxiety was statistically significant. Conclusion: Benson's relaxation method and lavender aromatherapy did not significantly reduce anxiety in patients with ACS. Considering the anxiety and its complications in patients with ACS and the importance of its management, further studies are needed to determine appropriate care and treatment for these patients and reduce their anxiety. The efficacy of β -cryptoxanthin (BCX), a high-protein diet (HPD), or both in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has never been examined within a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Thus, we aimed to assess the efficacy of an energy-restricted HPD supplemented with BCX in alleviating these conditions in NAFLD in an RCT design. We hypothesized that this combination may improve oxidative stress and inflammation in NAFLD as compared to a standard energy-restricted diet. Ninety-two ultrasonographically confirmed overweight/obese adult NAFLD patients attending an outpatient clinic in Ahvaz, Iran, were recruited for this 12-week, single-center, parallel-group, double-blind RCT from 2017 to 2018. Subjects were randomized into 4 equal groups (n = 23): HPD-BCX (energy-restricted HPD + BCX), HPD (energy-restricted HPD + placebo), BCX (standard energy-restricted diet + BCX), and control (standard energy-restricted diet + placebo). Serum levels of oxidative stress– and inflammation-related markers, as primary outcome measures, were determined at baseline and at the study end point. The 1-way analysis of covariance models in the intention-to-treat population (N = 92) showed that the HPD-BCX group achieved greater 12-week reductions in malondialdehyde, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, and total cytokeratin-18 (CK18-M65) but higher increases in total antioxidant capacity and adiponectin compared to the control group (mean differences for malondialdehyde, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, total cytokeratin-18, total antioxidant capacity, and adiponectin were −1.9 nmol/mL, −1.0 mg/L, −2.0 ng/L, −270.9 ng/L, 2.5 U/mL, and 1.9 mg/L, respectively; all P <.001). These results show that an energy-restricted HPD supplemented with BCX more efficaciously alleviates oxidative stress and inflammation in NAFLD as compared to a standard energy-restricted diet. Background: Evaluation of clinical skills is critically important for nursing students. However, the quality of evaluation tools is poor. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) and Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX) on clinical skills of nursing students. Methods: This study was conducted among 108 senior nursing students. Mini-CEX and DOPS were utilized to evaluate clinical skills in the intervention group. Results: The mean of students' scores in all of the five procedures was significantly higher in the intervention group compared to control group.. Students' scores for the procedures significantly raised through the first stage of DOPS and Mini-CEX to the third stage. Conclusions: Utilization of DOPS and Mini-CEX for evaluation of clinical skills in nursing students effectively enhance their learning ability. Background: Among manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) form the backbone of evidence-based medicine. Hence, their protocol should be designed rigorously and their results should be reported clearly. To improve the quality of RCT reporting, researchers developed the CONSORT Statement in 1996 and updated it in 2010. This study was designed to assess the quality of RCT reporting vis-à-vis adherence to CONSORT among articles published in Iranian medical journals (English, Persian, CONSORT-endorsing, and non-CONSORT-endorsing). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all RCTs published in all Iranian medical journals from September 2012 to September 2013 were retrieved to evaluate their adherence to CONSORT. The journals' instructions for authors were also reviewed to find out whether or not they endorsed CONSORT. The CONSORT 2010 Checklist was used. Microsoft Excel 2007 was applied to analyze the data, and MedCalc was employed to compare the groups. Results: Totally, 492 pharmacological RCTs that met our inclusion criteria were identified. Twenty-five items were reported in fewer than 50% of the articles. The differences between the articles published in Persian and English language journals were statistically significant in 17 items. The differences between the articles published in the CONSORT-endorsing and non-CONSORT-endorsing journals were significant in 8 items. Conclusion: Our findings showed very weak adherence to CONSORT. Authors, reviewers, and editors should be trained to use standards expressed by the CONSORT Group in reporting RCTs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Controversy exists regarding whether increasing dairy intake without energy restriction would lead to weight loss. We aimed to compare the potential weight-reducing effects of kefir drink (a probiotic dairy product) and milk in a dairy-rich non-energy-restricted diet in overweight or obese premenopausal women. Methods: One hundred and forty-four subjects were assessed for eligibility in this single-center, multi-arm, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial. Of these, seventy-five eligible women aged 25-45 years were randomly assigned to three groups, labeled as control, milk, and kefir, to receive an outpatient dietary regimen for 8 weeks. Subjects in the control group received a diet providing a maintenance level of energy intake, containing 2 servings/day of low-fat dairy products, while those in the milk and kefir groups received a weight maintenance diet, containing 2 additional servings/day (a total of 4 servings/day) of dairy products from low-fat milk or commercial kefir drink, respectively. Anthropometric outcomes including weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) were measured every 2 weeks. Results: Fifty-eight subjects completed the study. Using analysis of covariance models in the intention-to-treat population ( n = 75), we found that at 8 weeks, subjects in the kefir and milk groups had significantly greater reductions in weight, BMI, and WC compared to those in the control group (all p < 0.01). However, no such significant differences were found between the kefir and milk groups. Conclusions: Kefir drink leads to a similar weight loss, compared with milk, in a dairy-rich non-energy-restricted diet in overweight or obese premenopausal women. Aim This study aimed to assess the efficacy of thalidomide for treatment of experimental endometriosis. Methods This study was a parallel-group, double-blind, stratified, randomized controlled animal trial with 1:1 allocation ratio. Endometriosis was induced experimentally in 23 mature, nulligravid, female Sprague- Dawley rats, weighing approximately 200 g and aged 2 months. A checkpoint surgery was performed 6 weeks later. Then, the rats were randomly allocated into the thalidomide (22 mg/day p.o.) and control (0.5 mL saline 0.9%/day p.o.) groups of nine. After 6 weeks, they were killed. Before each laparotomy, blood for leukocyte and lymphocyte counts and during them, implants for histopathology and peritoneal fluid for interleukin ( IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor-α and vascular endothelial growth factor ( VEGF)- A concentrations (by enzyme-linked immunoassay) were collected. Allocation and stratified randomization were done using a computer, based on the obtained histopathology scores of the implants of the checkpoint surgery. Results The histopathology scores (the main outcome measure) were 2.00 ± 1.55 versus 0.44 ± 1.01 ( P = 0.035). The comparisons of after-treatment counts of leukocytes, lymphocytes, VEGF- A and IL-6 between the two groups were statistically significant. Conclusion The results of this study are in favor of therapeutic implication of thalidomide in experimental endometriosis in rats. Background: Many workers suffer from low-back pain. Type and severity of spinal complaints have relationship with work load. Lack of adherence to ergonomics recommendations among the important causes of low-back pain. Objective: To assess the effect of 3 ergonomics training programs on the prevalence of low-back pain among workers of an Iranian automobile factory. Methods: In a parallel-design 4-arm randomized clinical trial, 760 active workers of an automobile factory were studied. 503 workers were found eligible and randomized into 3 intervention groups (n=252), and a control group (n=251). The intervention groups consisted of 3 arms: 84 workers were educated by pamphlet, 84 by lectures, and 84 by workshop. Nordic questionnaire was used to determine the prevalence of spinal complaint before and 1-year after the interventions. The trial is registered with the Iranian Randomized Clinical Trial Registry, number IRCT2013061213182N2. Results: Out of 503 workers, 52 lost to follow-up leaving 451 workers for analyses. The prevalence of low-back pain at the baseline was not significantly different among the studied arms. 1-year after the interventions, the prevalence did not change significantly from the baseline values for the lecture and pamphlet group. However, the prevalence of LBP experienced during the last year significantly (p=0.036) decreased from 42% to 23% in participant took part in the workshop. Conclusion: Training of automobile factory workers in ergonomics is more effective by running workshop than giving lecture or disseminating pamphlet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome is known as the most common entrapment neuropathy. Conservative treatments cannot reduce the symptomatic severity satisfactorily; therefore, effectiveness of Linum usitatissimum L. (linseed) oil on carpal tunnel syndrome, as a complementary treatment, was evaluated in the current study. Linseed oil is a well-known preparation in Iranian traditional medicine and its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects have been shown in previous studies. Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted. One hundred patients (155 hands) with idiopathic mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome aged between 18 and 65 years old were randomized in two parallel groups. These two groups were treated during 4 weeks with topical placebo and linseed oil. In addition, a night wrist splint was prescribed for both groups. Symptomatic severity and functional status were measured using Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire. In addition, median sensory nerve conduction velocity, motor distal latency, sensory distal latency and compound latency as electrodiagnostic parameters were measured at baseline and after the intervention period. Results: After the intervention, significant improvement was observed regarding Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire symptomatic severity and functional status mean differences (p <0.001) in the linseed oil group compared with those in the placebo group. Also, regarding the mean differences of both groups, significant improvement of nerve conduction velocity of the median nerve was seen in the linseed oil group by a value of 2.38 m/sec (p < 0.05). However, motor distal latency and sensory distal latency of the median nerve showed no between-group significant changes (p = 0.14 for both items). Finally, compound latency was improved slightly in the case group, comparing mean differences between the groups (p <0.05). No significant adverse events were reported from using linseed oil. Conclusions: It seems that linseed oil could be effective in the management of mild and moderate carpal tunnel syndrome, especially in improving the severity of symptoms and functional status. Aim This split-mouth double-masked randomized controlled clinical study evaluated the effectiveness of photoactivated disinfection ( PAD) using light-emitting diode ( LED) as an adjunct in the management of patients affected by moderate to severe chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods Sixteen patients affected by moderate to severe chronic periodontitis were enrolled. After scaling and root planing (SRP), each quadrant was assigned to one of the following groups: LED group (625-635 nm, maximum power density: 2000 mW/cm2), photosensitizer group (tolouidine blue O, 0.1 mg/ml), PAD group (photosensitizer and LED) and control group (no adjunctive treatment). The adjunctive treatments were repeated after 7 and 14 days. The clinical parameters of bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level were measured at baseline and 1 and 3 months after SRP. Results At 1 and 3 months, all groups showed significant improvements with regard to all clinical parameters compared to baseline (all p: <0.001). There were no significant differences among groups in terms of changes of clinical parameters in any time interval (all p > 0.05). Conclusion The application of PAD using LED with the current setting did not have additional effects on clinical parameters in patients diagnosed with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis compared with SRP alone. Introduction: Weight management is a new public health role for community pharmacists in many countries. Lack of expertise is one of the key barriers to counseling obese patients. We evaluated the comparative efficacy of three alternative continuing education (CE) meetings on weight management. Methods: We designed a randomized controlled trial comparing didactic lecture, lecture plus case discussion, and lecture plus small-group training. It was conducted in 2011 in Tehran. Pharmacists' knowledge, attitudes, and competence were evaluated immediately before, immediately after and one month after each meeting via standardized questionnaires and case vignettes. Participants' satisfaction was evaluated after each meeting. Data were analyzed using repeated measure analysis of variance and chi-squared tests. Results: Sixty pharmacists were randomly allocated to each study arm. There were no demographic differences between the arms at the baseline. The knowledge scores significantly improved for all interventions over time. At the follow-up, the small-group training arm obtained significantly higher knowledge scores ( p < 0.001, effect size = 0.54). The competence scores in lecture plus case discussion and lecture plus small-group training meetings improved over time (effect size 0.14 and 0.34; difference nonsignificant). Small-group training resulted in significantly higher satisfaction scores ( p = 0.005). The interventions' effects on attitudes were similar. Discussion: This is the first study on the implementation and efficacy of various types of CE meetings for community pharmacists to provide weight management services. Lecture plus small group training resulted in better learning retention over time and higher satisfaction. Future studies should evaluate the effects of various types of CE meetings on pharmacists' behavior and their cost-effectiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
