Novel core–shell poly(acrylamide) magnetic nanogels with controllable particle size produced via photochemical method in emulsion-free aqueous system at room temperature have been developed for the first time. After Hoffmann elimination of carbonyl, the nanogels with amino groups, or poly(acrylamide-vinyl amine) magnetic nanogels, were also obtained. Particle size, size distributions and zeta potential of the magnetic nanogels before and after Hoffmann elimination were measured by photo correlation spectroscopy (PCS). Structure and morphology of the magnetic nanogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The higher dispersibility and stability of the magnetic nanogels suggest promising potential applications in targeted radiopharmaceuticals carrier for cancer therapy, and in biological and medical studies as well. Due to the ever-tightening regulation on mercury emission in recent decades, there is an urgent need to develop novel materials for the removal of elemental mercury at coal-fired power plants. In this study, a series of MoS 2 quantum dots (QDs)-based MoS 2 /HKUST-1 composite materials were prepared. It is found that MoS 2 QDs were encapsulated by HKUST-1 and enhanced the crystallinity and specific surface area of HKUST-1. The MoS 2 /HKUST-1 showed excellent performance in catalytic oxidation of Hg0 as compared with pristine HKUST-1. It is found that surface layer of lattice oxygens is active and participates in Hg0 oxidation, while the consumption of surface oxygens then leads to the formation of oxygen vacancies on the surface. These vacancies are effective in the adsorption and dissociation of O 2 , which subsequently participates in the oxidation of Hg0. Moreover, the study on the influence of commonly seen gas components, such as SO 2 , NO, NH 3 and H 2 O, etc., on Hg0 oxidation demonstrated that synergistic effects exist among these gas species. Abstract: A novel synthesis method of polymer-coated magnetic nanoparticles was developed. UV-induced photochemical polymerization of acrylamide in magnetite aqueous suspension was performed to obtain core-shell structure polyacrylamide-coated magnetic nanoparticles. The mechanism of UV-induced photochemical coating was discussed. The morphology, crystalline structure and magnetic properties of polyacrylamide-coated magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. Superparamagnetic behaviors, high saturation magnetization and good response to external magnetic field were confirmed by the measurement of magnetic hysteresis curves. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
