The article presents information on the forty-ninth meeting of the Society for the History of Technology, that took place in Lisbon, Portugal, on October 11-14, 2008. Several papers on technological issues ranging from biomedical sciences and business computing were discussed during the meeting. In this special issue of articles from leading neuroethologists—all of whom gave outstanding presentations within the Presidential Symposium of the 2022 International Congress of Neuroethology held in Lisbon, Portugal—we learn about the role of cryptochrome molecules in the magnetic sense of animals, how honeybees construct their honeycombs, why fish eyes are built the way they are in species from different depths, how archerfish intercept their newly downed prey with a swift muscular curving of the body (known as a C-start) and how birds process optic flow information to control flight. The article focuses on the 20th edition of the Design of Circuits and Integrated Systems international conference held in Lisbon, Portugal from November 23-25, 2005. Abstract: Context: Testosterone deficiency syndrome (TDS) is highly prevalent in ageing men. Associated symptoms may significantly impair quality of life and may affect the function of multiple organ systems. In addition, TDS may have an impact on life expectancy. Although still the subject of debate, testosterone administration may hold promise in symptomatic hypogonadal men. Objective: To present an overview of current data on TDS and treatment of hypogonadal patients with testosterone. Evidence acquisition: This manuscript is based on presentations given at a satellite symposium on TDS held at the 2nd World Congress on Controversies in Urology (CURy) in Lisbon, Portugal. Data were retrieved from recent review papers and original papers on TDS, metabolic syndrome, and erectile dysfunction (ED). Evidence synthesis: Preliminary data of the Transversal European Survey on Testosterone deficiency Diagnosis (TESTo-Dia) demonstrated that physicians need more information and education on TDS. Although there is no clear-cut testosterone threshold at which overall symptoms appear, testosterone deficiency can be associated with severe symptoms and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and ED. Consequently, appropriate treatment of hypogonadal men is highly warranted. There are compelling data showing that testosterone administration does not increase the risk of prostate cancer. Moreover, treatment of testosterone deficiency appears to have a neuroprotective role. Based on these data, physicians may not withhold testosterone treatment from hypogonadal patients. Current treatment options include testosterone administration via gels, patches, capsules, or implants. A new transdermal-matrix patch appears to be safe and effective in hypogonadal men. Conclusions: Although long-term randomised controlled trials are needed, treatment with testosterone in selected symptomatic hypogonadal men may have a beneficial effect on symptoms and/or prevention of several age-related disorders. Context: Acute uncomplicated cystitis is generally treated with short-term antibiotic therapy. However, recurrence of lower urinary tract infections (UTIs) is very common, especially in premenopausal women. These recurrent infections considerably affect a patient''s quality of life and have a huge financial and economic impact on society. Therefore, prevention of UTI recurrence is highly important. Objective: To provide an overview of the state of the art and the current controversies on the prophylaxis of recurrent UTIs. Evidence acquisition: This manuscript is based on presentations given at a satellite symposium held at the 2nd World Congress on Controversies in Urology (CURy) in Lisbon, Portugal. Data were retrieved from recent review papers, original papers, and abstracts on recurrent UTIs. Evidence synthesis: Currently, antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended as a first-line strategy for the prevention of recurrent UTIs in the European Association of Urology guidelines. However, more and more uropathogens become resistant to certain types of antimicrobials. Hence, alternative prophylactic strategies are gaining importance. Oral administration of immunoactive Escherichia coli (E. coli) fractions (Uro-Vaxom®) is one of these methods. Our understanding of its mechanism of action has considerably grown over the past 20 yr. In several double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, oral immunostimulation with E. coli extracts significantly reduced recurrent UTIs compared with placebo. Moreover, this strategy was well tolerated. Two new Uro-Vaxom studies have been initiated to gather more data on the long-term efficacy, the treatment regimen, and the mechanism of action of this immunostimulant and to find broader indications for this therapy. Conclusions: Although scientific and clinical data on oral immunostimulation with E. coli fractions have increased significantly, more studies are needed to provide convincing evidence that this strategy is equally effective as antibiotic prophylaxis for the prevention of recurrent cystitis. As climate change intensifies, the fate of many of the world's forests is becoming a major concern. Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) member states have committed to the goal of becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, which will involve the planting of 3 billion additional trees by 2030. This challenge can only be met by robust and efficient management and conservation strategies, based on intense sharing of knowledge and tools among experts, practitioners and policymakers. The B4EST International Conference 'Managing Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) for an Uncertain Future', held on 20–23 June 2022 in Lisbon (Portugal), brought together stakeholders from the public and private sectors, researchers and policymakers to explore issues around implementation of sustainable management and conservation of European forests. The conference illustrated the promise of genomic technologies for supporting the tree breeding sector, how Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) and Forest Reproductive Material (FRM) could be optimally deployed and play a key role in building climate resilient forests, and the role experts play in the present context of uncertain climate and societal changes. The article highlights the Fourth Mediterranean Combustion Symposium which was held in Lisbon, Portugal from October 6 to 10, 2005. The symposium was co-sponsored by the Combustion Institute and the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer. Its goal is to give combustion scientists, engineers and students an opportunity to meet and share their developments in the field, as well as enhance future collaborative research activities.

The article presents a summary of research presentations on Cryptosporidium at the International Workshops on Opportunistic infections in Lisbon, Portugal from June 20 to 24, 2006. Over 17 papers were presented which focused on chemotherapy, host/parasite interactions, epidemiology, genotyping, and molecular biology.

Information on the 7th European Association for South East Asian Studies (EuroSEAS) Conference held at the School of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lisbon in Lisbon, Portugal from July 2-5, 2013 on the role of International Scientific Conferences (ISCs) in science is presented. Topics discussed include the cultural commoditization, the political and economic condition in Portugal and Europe, and the Greek default and bailout program.

The first International Conference of OBSERVARE, the International Relations Research Unit of Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL) was its greatest public scientific event to date. It was held on 16-18 November 2011 at the University headquarters and at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The Conference was an important occasion for the confluence of Portuguese and foreign experts in International Relations, and focused on the topic “International Trends and Portugal's position. In addition to researchers from OBSERVARE and lecturers from UAL, the event was attended by several researchers from other universities, particularly those with which a partnership was agreed to that effect: The Carolina Foundation in Madrid, NOREF from Oslo, NICPRI from the University of Minho, IPRI from Universidade Nova de Lisboa (New University of Lisbon), Instituto de Estudos Superiores Militares (Institute for Higher Military Studies), Instituto de Defesa Nacional (National Defence Institute), Instituto de Estudos Estratégicos Internacionais (Institute of International Strategic Studies), Rede Portuguesa de Estudos de Segurança (Portuguese Network for Security Studies), and Observatório Género e Violência Armada (Gender and Armed Violence Observatory) of CES, of the University of Coimbra. The article focuses on the Fourth Conference on Construction Application of Virtual Reality which was held on September 14-15, 2004 in Lisbon, Portugal. The event has become a rich international forum for research and debate on the initiatives and challenges of virtual reality and augmented reality in architecture, engineering and construction.

Abstract: Context: Prostate cancer (PCa) cells are characterised by an exquisite tropism for the bone, which translates into one of the highest rates of bone metastases and skeletal morbidity. New, effective treatments have emerged from a better understanding of the physiopathology of bone metastases. Objective: To summarise current insights and future perspectives in the therapy of PCa-induced bone disease. Evidence acquisition: This manuscript is based on presentations given at a satellite symposium held at the 2nd World Congress on Controversies in Urology (CURy) in Lisbon, Portugal. Data were retrieved from original and recent review papers on PCa-induced bone disease. Evidence synthesis: In normal, healthy bone, there is a balance between bone resorption and bone formation through the coordinated activity of osteoclasts and osteoblasts. The receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) is an essential mediator of osteoclast formation, function, and survival. The RANKL pathway represents a therapeutic target for osteoclast-induced bone destruction in pathologic conditions, including treatment-induced bone loss and metastatic cancer. Based on a multicentre, randomised, open-label, active-controlled phase 2 trial, denosumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody against RANKL, reduced the incidence of skeletal morbidity in patients with bone metastases from PCa, breast cancer, or other neoplasms. Conclusions: In a phase 2 clinical study, denosumab reduced skeletal-related events in patients with bone metastases from PCa. In addition, the potential role of denosumab in the management of treatment-induced bone loss and the prevention of bone metastases is currently under investigation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article reports on the second international terminology conference, CIT 2003, that was organized in December 2003 in Lisbon, Portugal by the Portuguese Association for Terminology and the research unit Lexicology, Lexicography and Terminology of the Centre of Linguistics of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Terminologist Pierre Auger recalled the different terminological trends, which result from the merging of the historical background, the linguistic culture, the social needs and the working process itself. He emphasized upon the generalized current trend to use corpora, which contain all the terms, associated phraseology, and of course conceptual information, while information technology has provided tools that now enable the terminologist to extract and use all this information instead of focusing on the sole management of information painstakingly gathered by hand. The paper of terminologist Heribert Picht concentrated on terminological research in Russia and explained both the history of the field and its contemporary developments in that country.

Abstract: Context: Overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) is a highly prevalent condition. Urodynamics have long been the only option, and still remain the gold standard, for examining people with OAB complaints and composing an appropriate treatment plan. Alternatives for this invasive, expensive, and time-consuming examination have been explored. Objective: To review if bladder wall thickness (BWT) could be a more objective and easier measurement that potentially could diagnose OAB and be used to analyse treatment response. Evidence acquisition: Proposed and opposed arguments on the role of BWT in OAB were discussed during the seminar, “The Great Bladder Wall Thickness Debate: Tearing It Down Brick by Brick,” at the 2nd World Congress on Controversies in Urology (CURy) in Lisbon, Portugal. Those arguments are summarised in this paper. Evidence synthesis: The assessment of BWT (ie, the thickness of the mucosa layer, detrusor muscle, and adventitia) is an indirect measure of detrusor muscle thickness. There is no standard method of measuring BWT. In a Web-based survey conducted before the congress, 49% of the physicians who participated agreed that BWT has a role in OAB; at the end of the debate, the survey question was repeated to the participants of the session and only 20% agreed that BWT has a role in OAB in clinical practice today. Conclusions: At the moment, there is no standardised method of measuring BWT. Assessing BWT with ultrasonography is a very appealing concept for research purposes, but more studies are needed before it will become a tool in daily clinical practice. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

As a field of study that developed under a philological impulse, Orientalism created its own sites of knowledge exchange and sociability, well-illustrated by the International Congresses of Orientalists (1873–1973). This article focuses on Hebraist and Arabist Joseph Benoliel (1857–1937) who published two Hebrew translations within the orientalist congress that was supposed to have taken place in Lisbon in 1892. These translations will be examined peritextually so as to analyse the orientalist translation paradigm followed to voice otherness considering the (con)texts selected for translation, to unveil perceptions about translation, and inquire into a discursive form of knowledge as subordinated to an epistemological or hermeneutical agenda. To this end, the article is structured as follows: first, I will outline Benoliel's life narrative to shed light on his polyglot background; second, I will formally describe the translations he prepared for the Lisbon congress in which Hebrew is the privileged target language; third, the peritextual analysis of these texts will be discussed against the voices paratextually framing them. The last part reviews the implications of Benoliel's idiosyncratic translation strategy under the idea of a translational epistemology, or hermeneutics, in that Benoliel openly relies on the use of the Bible as intertext. This article announces that the European Association Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE) 90' Conference will be held in Lisbon, from September 2-4, organized by the Portuguese Catholic University. The Conference will be opened with a special lecture given by Professor William J. Baumol. In addition there will be 5/6 parallel sessions discussing the papers selected. Although the topics of the parallel sessions are not strictly defined, papers will concentrate on main issues such as theory of industrial organization, industrial case studies, firm's investment policy, mergers and takeovers, and public firms and privatizations. The fee for the Conference covers the EARIE membership fee for 1991, the subscription fee for the International Journal of Research in Industrial Organisation, as well as documents, papers, lunches on all three days, refreshments and coffee during the breaks and a reception on the first day. Information about several papers discussed at a workshop held at Lisbon University Institute in Portugal on the epistemological perspectives of simulation is presented. Topics include criticism on the validation of simulation models, modelling social phenomena and different kinds approaches. The workshop concludes that simulation is becoming a discipline spanning a number of fields, with its own methods, dilemmas and techniques following the increasing interest in epistemological perspectives.

The SAT Conference on Theory and Applications of Satisfiability Testing was held in Lisbon, Portugal, 28-31 May 2007. The conference, which attracted a record-breaking 80 participants, featured 34 papers and two in- vited presentations.
