Medical imaging refers to the process of obtaining images of internal organs for therapeutic purposes such as discovering or studying diseases. The primary objective of medical image analysis is to improve the efficacy of clinical research and treatment options. Deep learning has revamped medical image analysis, yielding excellent results in image processing tasks such as registration, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification. The prime motivations for this are the availability of computational resources and the resurgence of deep convolutional neural networks. Deep learning techniques are good at observing hidden patterns in images and supporting clinicians in achieving diagnostic perfection. It has proven to be the most effective method for organ segmentation, cancer detection, disease categorization, and computer-assisted diagnosis. Many deep learning approaches have been published to analyze medical images for various diagnostic purposes. In this paper, we review the work exploiting current state-of-the-art deep learning approaches in medical image processing. We begin the survey by providing a synopsis of research works in medical imaging based on convolutional neural networks. Second, we discuss popular pretrained models and general adversarial networks that aid in improving convolutional networks' performance. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many works have been published proposing solutions to the problems that arose in this scenario. In this vein, one of the topics that attracted the most attention is the development of computer-based strategies to detect COVID-19 from thoracic medical imaging, such as chest X-ray (CXR) and computerized tomography scan (CT scan). By searching for works already published on this theme, we can easily find thousands of them. This is partly explained by the fact that the most severe worldwide pandemic emerged amid the technological advances recently achieved, and also considering the technical facilities to deal with the large amount of data produced in this context. Even though several of these works describe important advances, we cannot overlook the fact that others only use well-known methods and techniques without a more relevant and critical contribution. Hence, differentiating the works with the most relevant contributions is not a trivial task. The number of citations obtained by a paper is probably the most straightforward and intuitive way to verify its impact on the research community. Aiming to help researchers in this scenario, we present a review of the top-100 most cited papers in this field of investigation according to the Google Scholar search engine. We evaluate the distribution of the top-100 papers taking into account some important aspects, such as the type of medical imaging explored, learning settings, segmentation strategy, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), and finally, the dataset and code availability. Background: With potential of deep learning in musculoskeletal image interpretation being explored, this paper focuses on the common site of rotator cuff tears, the supraspinatus. It aims to propose and validate a deep learning model to automatically extract the supraspinatus, verifying its superiority through comparison with several classical image segmentation models. Method: Imaging data were retrospectively collected from 60 patients who underwent inpatient treatment for rotator cuff tears at a hospital between March 2021 and May 2023. A dataset of the supraspinatus from MRI was constructed after collecting, filtering, and manually annotating at the pixel level. This paper proposes a novel A-DAsppUnet network that can automatically extract the supraspinatus after training and optimization. The analysis of model performance is based on three evaluation metrics: precision, intersection over union, and Dice coefficient. Results: The experimental results demonstrate that the precision, intersection over union, and Dice coefficients of the proposed model are 99.20%, 83.38%, and 90.94%, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed model exhibited significant advantages over the compared models. Conclusion: The designed model in this paper accurately extracts the supraspinatus from MRI, and the extraction results are complete and continuous with clear boundaries. The feasibility of using deep learning methods for musculoskeletal extraction and assisting in clinical decision-making was verified. Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the field of medical imaging, holding the potential to shift medicine from a reactive "sick-care" approach to a proactive focus on healthcare and prevention. The successful development of AI in this domain relies on access to large, comprehensive, and standardized real-world datasets that accurately represent diverse populations and diseases. However, images and data are sensitive, and as such, before using them in any way the data needs to be modified to protect the privacy of the patients. This paper explores the approaches in the domain of five EU projects working on the creation of ethically compliant and GDPR-regulated European medical imaging platforms, focused on cancer-related data. It presents the individual approaches to the de-identification of imaging data, and describes the problems and the solutions adopted in each case. Further, lessons learned are provided, enabling future projects to optimally handle the problem of data de-identification. Medical imaging datasets for research are frequently collected from multiple imaging centers using different scanners, protocols, and settings. These variations affect data consistency and compatibility across different sources. Image harmonization is a critical step to mitigate the effects of factors like inherent differences between various vendors, hardware upgrades, protocol changes, and scanner calibration drift, as well as to ensure consistent data for medical image processing techniques. Given the critical importance and widespread relevance of this issue, a vast array of image harmonization methodologies have emerged, with deep learning-based approaches driving substantial advancements in recent times. The goal of this review paper is to examine the latest deep learning techniques employed for image harmonization by analyzing cutting-edge architectural approaches in the field of medical image harmonization, evaluating both their strengths and limitations. This paper begins by providing a comprehensive fundamental overview of image harmonization strategies, covering three critical aspects: established imaging datasets, commonly used evaluation metrics, and characteristics of different scanners. Subsequently, this paper analyzes recent structural MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) harmonization techniques based on network architecture, network learning algorithm, network supervision strategy, and network output. The underlying architectures include U-Net, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), flow-based generative models, transformer-based approaches, as well as custom-designed network architectures. This paper investigates the effectiveness of Disentangled Representation Learning (DRL) as a pivotal learning algorithm in harmonization. Lastly, the review highlights the primary limitations in harmonization techniques, specifically the lack of comprehensive quantitative comparisons across different methods. In recent years, semantic segmentation in deep learning has been widely applied in medical image segmentation, leading to the development of numerous models. Convolutional Neural Network (CNNs) have achieved milestone achievements in medical image analysis. Particularly, deep neural networks based on U-shaped architectures and skip connections have been extensively employed in various medical image tasks. U-Net is characterized by its encoder-decoder architecture and pioneering skip connections, along with multi-scale features, has served as a fundamental network architecture for many modifications. But U-Net cannot fully utilize all the information from the encoder layer in the decoder layer. U-Net++ connects mid parameters of different dimensions through nested and dense skip connections. However, it can only alleviate the disadvantage of not being able to fully utilize the encoder information and will greatly increase the model parameters. In this paper, a novel BFNet is proposed to utilize all feature maps from the encoder at every layer of the decoder and reconnects with the current layer of the encoder. This allows the decoder to better learn the positional information of segmentation targets and improves learning of boundary information and abstract semantics in the current layer of the encoder. Our proposed method has a significant improvement in accuracy with 1.4 percent. Besides enhancing accuracy, our proposed BFNet also reduces network parameters. Personalized orthopedic devices are increasingly favored for their potential to enhance long-term treatment success. Despite significant advancements across various disciplines, the seamless integration and full automation of personalized orthopedic treatments remain elusive. This paper identifies key interdisciplinary gaps in integrating and automating advanced technologies for personalized orthopedic treatment. It begins by outlining the standard clinical practices in orthopedic treatments and the extent of personalization achievable. The paper then explores recent innovations in artificial intelligence, biomaterials, genomic and proteomic analyses, lab-on-a-chip, medical imaging, image-based biomechanical finite element modeling, biomimicry, 3D printing and bioprinting, and implantable sensors, emphasizing their contributions to personalized treatments. Tentative strategies or solutions are proposed to address the interdisciplinary gaps by utilizing innovative technologies. The key findings highlight the need for the non-invasive quantitative assessment of bone quality, patient-specific biocompatibility, and device designs that address individual biological and mechanical conditions. When conducting spine-related diagnosis and surgery, the three-dimensional (3D) upright posture of the spine under natural weight bearing is of significant clinical value for physicians to analyze the force on the spine. However, existing medical imaging technologies cannot meet current requirements of medical service. On the one hand, the mainstream 3D volumetric imaging modalities (e.g. CT and MRI) require patients to lie down during the imaging process. On the other hand, the imaging modalities conducted in an upright posture (e.g. radiograph) can only realize 2D projections, which lose the valid information of spinal anatomy and curvature. Developments of deep learning-based 3D reconstruction methods bring potential to overcome the limitations of the existing medical imaging technologies. To deal with the limitations of current medical imaging technologies as is described above, in this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework, ReVerteR, which can realize automatic 3D Reconstruction of Vertebrae from orthogonal bi-planar Radiographs. With the utilization of self-attention mechanism and specially designed loss function combining Dice, Hausdorff, Focal, and MSE, ReVerteR can alleviate the sample-imbalance problem during the reconstruction process and realize the fusion of the centroid annotation and the focused vertebra. Furthermore, aiming at automatic and customized 3D spinal reconstruction in real-world scenarios, we extend ReVerteR to a clinical deployment-oriented framework, and develop an interactive interface with all functions in the framework integrated so as to enhance human–computer interaction during clinical decision-making. Extensive experiments and visualization conducted on our constructed datasets based on two benchmark datasets of spinal CT, VerSe 2019 and VerSe 2020, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed ReVerteR. Oncology has emerged as a crucial field of study in the domain of medicine. Computed tomography has gained widespread adoption as a radiological modality for the identification and characterisation of pathologies, particularly in oncology, enabling precise identification of affected organs and tissues. However, achieving accurate liver segmentation in computed tomography scans remains a challenge due to the presence of artefacts and the varying densities of soft tissues and adjacent organs. This paper compares artificial intelligence algorithms and traditional medical image processing techniques to assist radiologists in liver segmentation in computed tomography scans and evaluates their accuracy and efficiency. Despite notable progress in the field, the limited availability of public datasets remains a significant barrier to broad participation in research studies and replication of methodologies. Future directions should focus on increasing the accessibility of public datasets, establishing standardised evaluation metrics, and advancing the development of three-dimensional segmentation techniques. Accurate segmentation of multiple organs in the head, neck, chest, and abdomen from medical images is an essential step in computer-aided diagnosis, surgical navigation, and radiation therapy. In the past few years, with a data-driven feature extraction approach and end-to-end training, automatic deep learning-based multi-organ segmentation methods have far outperformed traditional methods and become a new research topic. This review systematically summarizes the latest research in this field. We searched Google Scholar for papers published from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2023, using keywords "multi-organ segmentation" and "deep learning", resulting in 327 papers. We followed the PRISMA guidelines for paper selection, and 195 studies were deemed to be within the scope of this review. We summarized the two main aspects involved in multi-organ segmentation: datasets and methods. Regarding datasets, we provided an overview of existing public datasets and conducted an in-depth analysis. Concerning methods, we categorized existing approaches into three major classes: fully supervised, weakly supervised and semi-supervised, based on whether they require complete label information. We summarized the achievements of these methods in terms of segmentation accuracy. In the discussion and conclusion section, we outlined and summarized the current trends in multi-organ segmentation. Breast cancer is a common malignancy that critically affects women's physical and mental health. Early breast cancer screening—through mammography, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—can substantially improve the prognosis for breast cancer patients. AI applications have shown excellent performance in various image recognition tasks, and their use in breast cancer screening has been explored in numerous studies. This paper introduces relevant AI techniques and their applications in the field of medical imaging of the breast (mammography and ultrasound), specifically in terms of identifying, segmenting, and classifying lesions; assessing breast cancer risk; and improving image quality. This article proposes a target image processing method based on super-resolution reconstruction and machine learning algorithms, which solves the low-resolution problem in medical images during imaging. This method uses nonlocal autoregressive learning based on a medical image super-resolution reconstruction method. The autoregressive model is introduced into the sparse representation-based medical image super-resolution reconstruction model by utilizing medical image data inherent nonlocal similarity characteristics. At the same time, a clustering algorithm is used to obtain a classification dictionary, improving experimental efficiency. The experimental results show that ten randomly selected CT/MR images are used as test images, and each image's peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity values are calculated separately. Compared with other methods, the method proposed in this paper is significantly better and can achieve ideal results, with the highest value being 31.49. Medical image diagnosis using deep learning has shown significant promise in clinical medicine. However, it often encounters two major difficulties in real-world applications: (1) domain shift, which invalidates the trained model on new datasets, and (2) class imbalance problems leading to model biases towards majority classes. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a transfer learning solution, named Dynamic Weighting Translation Transfer Learning (DTTL), for imbalanced medical image classification. The approach is grounded in information and entropy theory and comprises three modules: Cross-domain Discriminability Adaptation (CDA), Dynamic Domain Translation (DDT), and Balanced Target Learning (BTL). CDA connects discriminative feature learning between source and target domains using a synthetic discriminability loss and a domain-invariant feature learning loss. The DDT unit develops a dynamic translation process for imbalanced classes between two domains, utilizing a confidence-based selection approach to select the most useful synthesized images to create a pseudo-labeled balanced target domain. Finally, the BTL unit performs supervised learning on the reassembled target set to obtain the final diagnostic model. This paper delves into maximizing the entropy of class distributions, while simultaneously minimizing the cross-entropy between the source and target domains to reduce domain discrepancies. By incorporating entropy concepts into our framework, our method not only significantly enhances medical image classification in practical settings but also innovates the application of entropy and information theory within deep learning and medical image processing realms. White matter tract segmentation is a pivotal research area that leverages diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) for the identification and mapping of individual white matter tracts and their trajectories. This study aims to provide a comprehensive systematic literature review on automated methods for white matter tract segmentation in brain dMRI scans. Articles on PubMed, ScienceDirect [NeuroImage, NeuroImage (Clinical), Medical Image Analysis], Scopus and IEEEXplore databases and Conference proceedings of Medical Imaging Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Society (MICCAI) and International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI), were searched in the range from January 2013 until September 2023. This systematic search and review identified 619 articles. Adhering to the specified search criteria using the query, "white matter tract segmentation OR fiber tract identification OR fiber bundle segmentation OR tractography dissection OR white matter parcellation OR tract segmentation," 59 published studies were selected. Among these, 27% employed direct voxel-based methods, 25% applied streamline-based clustering methods, 20% used streamline-based classification methods, 14% implemented atlas-based methods, and 14% utilized hybrid approaches. The paper delves into the research gaps and challenges associated with each of these categories. Additionally, this review paper illuminates the most frequently utilized public datasets for tract segmentation along with their specific characteristics. The fusion of multimodal medical images has garnered painstaking attention for clinical diagnosis and surgical planning. Although various scholars have designed numerous fusion methods, the challenges of extracting substantial features without introducing noise and non-uniform contrast hindered the overall quality of fused photos. This paper presents a multimodal medical image fusion (MMIF) using a novel deep convolutional neural network (D-CNN) along with preprocessing schemes to circumvent the mentioned issues. A non-linear average median filtering (NL-AMF) and multiscale improved top-hat (MI-TH) approach are utilized at the preprocessing stage to remove noise and improve the contrast of images. The non-linear anisotropic diffusion (NL-AD) scheme is employed to split the photos into base and detailed parts. The fusion of base parts is accomplished by a dimension reduction method to retain the energy information. In contrast, the detailed parts are fused by novel D-CNN to preserve the enriched detailed features effectively. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method produces better brightness contrast and more image details than existing methods by acquiring 0.7649 to 0.8986, 0.3520 to 0.4783, 0.7639 to 0.9056, 68.8932 to 81.0487 gain for quality transfer ratio from source photo to a generated photo ( Q G AB ), feature mutual information (FMI), structural similarity index (SSIM), and average pixel intensity (API) respectively. The study of human torso medical image segmentation is significant for computer-aided diagnosis of human examination, disease tracking, and disease prevention and treatment. In this paper, two application tasks are designed for torso medical images: the abdominal multi-organ segmentation task and the spine segmentation task. For this reason, this paper proposes a net-work model CI-UNet improve the accuracy of edge segmentation. CI-UNet is a U-shaped network structure consisting of encoding and decoding networks. Firstly, it replaces UNet's double convolutional backbone network with a VGG16 network loaded with Transfer Learning. It feeds image information from two adjacent layers in the VGG16 network into the decoding grid via information aggregation blocks. Secondly, Polarized Self-Attention is added at the decoding network and the hopping connection, which allows the network to focus on the compelling features of the image. Finally, the image information is decoded by convolution and Up-sampling several times to obtain the segmentation results. CI-UNet was tested in the abdominal multi-organ segmentation task using the Chaos (Combined CT-MR Healthy Abdominal Organ Segmentation) open challenge dataset and compared with UNet, Attention UNet, PSPNet, DeepLabv3+ prediction networks, and dedicated network for MRI images. The experimental results showed that the average intersegmental union (mIoU) and average pixel accuracy (mPA) of organ segmentation were 82.33% and 90.10%, respectively, higher than the above comparison network. Meanwhile, we used CI-UNet for the spine dataset of the Guizhou branch of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital. The average intersegmental union (mIoU) and average pixel accuracy (mPA) of organ segmentation were 87.97% and 93.48%, respectively, which were approved by the physicians for both tasks. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has already resulted in 6.6 million deaths with more than 637 million people infected after only 30 months since the first occurrences of the disease in December 2019. Hence, rapid and accurate detection and diagnosis of the disease is the first priority all over the world. Researchers have been working on various methods for COVID-19 detection and as the disease infects lungs, lung image analysis has become a popular research area for detecting the presence of the disease. Medical images from chest X-rays (CXR), computed tomography (CT) images, and lung ultrasound images have been used by automated image analysis systems in artificial intelligence (AI)- and machine learning (ML)-based approaches. Various existing and novel ML, deep learning (DL), transfer learning (TL), and hybrid models have been applied for detecting and classifying COVID-19, segmentation of infected regions, assessing the severity, and tracking patient progress from medical images of COVID-19 patients. In this paper, a comprehensive review of some recent approaches on COVID-19-based image analyses is provided surveying the contributions of existing research efforts, the available image datasets, and the performance metrics used in recent works. The challenges and future research scopes to address the progress of the fight against COVID-19 from the AI perspective are also discussed. Cancer is a serious disease that causes death by genomic disorder combination and diversity of unreasoning changes. This paper study the major deep learning techniques that are addressing medical image analysis and summarizes over 200 contributed articles to the subject, in particular those studies that are published in the last 6 years (since 2016). The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a barrage of primary research and reviews. We investigated the publishing process, time and resource wasting, and assessed the methodological quality of the reviews on artificial intelligence techniques to diagnose COVID-19 in medical images. We searched nine databases from inception until 1 September 2020. Two independent reviewers did all steps of identification, extraction, and methodological credibility assessment of records. Out of 725 records, 22 reviews analysing 165 primary studies met the inclusion criteria. This review covers 174,277 participants in total, including 19,170 diagnosed with COVID-19. The methodological credibility of all eligible studies was rated as critically low: 95% of papers had significant flaws in reporting quality. On average, 7.24 (range: 0–45) new papers were included in each subsequent review, and 14% of studies did not include any new paper into consideration. Almost three-quarters of the studies included less than 10% of available studies. More than half of the reviews did not comment on the previously published reviews at all. Much wasting time and resources could be avoided if referring to previous reviews and following methodological guidelines. Such information chaos is alarming. Traditional medical image segmentation methods have problems such as low segmentation accuracy and low adaptive ability. Therefore, many scholars have proposed a medical image segmentation method based on deep learning, which has achieved good results in the field of medical image segmentation. However, this type of method has the following problems in the application process: (1) Medical image segmentation target boundary positioning problem. Constrained by factors such as medical image contrast, heterogeneity, and boundary resolution, existing convolution models still cannot accurately locate boundaries. (2) Deep adaptability of deep learning network structure to medical images. Because medical images have more distinct and different feature information than natural images, the current deep learning-based medical segmentation methods have not fully considered this feature. In view of this, this paper proposes a multi-level boundary-aware RUNet segmentation model. The network structure consists of a U-Net-based segmentation network and a multi-level boundary detection network. It can solve the problem of boundary positioning. At the same time, in order to solve the problem of poor adaptability of deep learning network structures to medical images, this paper proposes to introduce a new interactive self-attention module into deep learning models. It can make the feature map get global information, and realize the effective extraction of medical image feature information. It solves the problem of weak matching between the deep learning network structure and medical images. Based on the above ideas, this paper proposes an image segmentation algorithm based on a multi-layer boundary perception-self-attention mechanism deep learning model. This method and other mainstream segmentation algorithms are used to perform experiments on related medical databases. The results show that the proposed method not only improves the segmentation effect significantly compared with traditional machine learning methods, but also improves it to a certain extent compared with other deep learning methods. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithms have revolutionized the medical image segmentation processes. Thus, the precise segmentation of organs and their lesions may contribute to an efficient diagnostics process and a more effective selection of targeted therapies, as well as increasing the effectiveness of the training process. In this context, AI may contribute to the automatization of the image scan segmentation process and increase the quality of the resulting 3D objects, which may lead to the generation of more realistic virtual objects. In this paper, we focus on the AI-based solutions applied in medical image scan segmentation and intelligent visual content generation, i.e., computer-generated three-dimensional (3D) images in the context of extended reality (XR). We consider different types of neural networks used with a special emphasis on the learning rules applied, taking into account algorithm accuracy and performance, as well as open data availability. This paper attempts to summarize the current development of AI-based segmentation methods in medical imaging and intelligent visual content generation that are applied in XR. It concludes with possible developments and open challenges in AI applications in extended reality-based solutions. It can automatically learn feature representations from images which are then used to classify them as normal or abnormal. Several studies have shown the potential of deep learning in detecting lung diseases with high accuracy, even outperforming human experts in some cases. Deep learning models can also be used to predict disease progression and treatment outcomes, and to guide personalized treatment plans. This paper presents a study of the major deep learning techniques applied to medical imaging, focusing on pulmonary medical images, datasets, and benchmarks. Using generative adversarial network (GAN) Goodfellow et al. (2014) for data enhancement of medical images is significantly helpful for many computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tasks. A new GAN-based automated tampering attack, like CT-GAN Mirsky et al. (2019), has emerged. It can inject or remove lung cancer lesions to CT scans. Because the tampering region may even account for less than 1% of the original image, even state-of-the-art methods are challenging to detect the traces of such tampering. This paper proposes a two-stage cascade framework to detect GAN-based medical image small region forgery like CT-GAN. In the local detection stage, we train the detector network with small sub-images so that interference information in authentic regions will not affect the detector. We use depthwise separable convolution and residual networks to prevent the detector from over-fitting and enhance the ability to find forged regions through the attention mechanism. The detection results of all sub-images in the same image will be combined into a heatmap. In the global classification stage, using gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) can better extract features of the heatmap. Because the shape and size of the tampered region are uncertain, we use hyperplanes in an infinite-dimensional space for classification. Our method can classify whether a CT image has been tampered and locate the tampered position. Medical image segmentation through the use of deep learning is becoming a trend targeting to automate disease detection and provide effective treatment. Traditionally huge manual efforts are associated with medical image processing by medical staff. The wide use of neural networks driven by the progressive advancement in computing power and the availability of training data provides instrumental means to automate medical image processing. A polyp refers to an abnormal growth that can occur in various parts of the body. While the majority of polyps are noncancerous or benign, there are instances where certain types can develop into cancer. Detecting and segmenting polyps is highly valuable for identifying early signs and potentially enabling more effective treatment of colon cancer. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for segmenting polyp images. The proposed method utilizes convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and employs an enhanced attention mechanism. To cater to a more granular attention view, this paper enhances the Convolutional Block Attention Module by introducing the multi‐focal channel attention (MFCA) concept, which we call MFCA. In the proposed MFCA channel attention, focal attention spots allow us to consider scattered areas of interest more effectively. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, multiple experiments are conducted on five well‐known benchmark datasets for polyp image segmentation: Kvasir, CVC‐Clinic DB, CVC‐Colon DB, CVC‐T, and ETIS‐Larib. Various testing scenarios are examined, including the impact of two focal attention spots and four focal attention spots. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method achieved superior performance compared to previous state‐of‐the‐art techniques on two of the benchmark datasets, and ranked second on a third dataset. The epidemic diseases such as COVID-19 are rapidly spreading all around the world. The diagnosis of epidemic at initial stage is of high importance to provide medical care to and recovery of infected people as well as protecting the uninfected population. In this paper, an automatic COVID-19 detection model using respiratory sound and medical image based on internet of health things (IoHT) is proposed. In this model, primarily to screen those people having suspected Coronavirus disease, the sound of coughing used to detect healthy people and those suffering from COVID-19, which finally obtained an accuracy of 94.999%. This approach not only expedites diagnosis and enhances accuracy but also facilitates swift screening in public places using simple equipment. Then, in the second step, in order to help radiologists to interpret medical images as best as possible, we use three pre-trained convolutional neural network models InceptionResNetV2, InceptionV3 and EfficientNetB4 and two data sets of chest radiology medical images, and CT Scan in a three-class classification. Utilizing transfer learning and pre-existing knowledge in these models leads to notable improvements in disease diagnosis and identification compared to traditional techniques. Finally, the best result obtained for CT-Scan images belonging to InceptionResNetV2 architecture with 99.414% accuracy and for radiology images related to InceptionV3 and EfficientNetB4 architectures with the accuracy is 96.943%. Background and Objective: Coronary artery disease remains a leading cause of mortality among individuals with cardiovascular conditions. The therapeutic use of bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVSs) through stent implantation is common, yet the effectiveness of current BVS segmentation techniques from Intravascular Optical Coherence Tomography (IVOCT) images is inadequate. Methods: This paper introduces an enhanced segmentation approach using a novel Wavelet-based U-shape network to address these challenges. We developed a Wavelet-based U-shape network that incorporates an Attention Gate (AG) and an Atrous Multi-scale Field Module (AMFM), designed to enhance the segmentation accuracy by improving the differentiation between the stent struts and the surrounding tissue. A unique wavelet fusion module mitigates the semantic gaps between different feature map branches, facilitating more effective feature integration. Results: Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model surpasses existing techniques in key metrics such as Dice coefficient, accuracy, sensitivity, and Intersection over Union (IoU), achieving scores of 85.10%, 99.77%, 86.93%, and 73.81%, respectively. The integration of AG, AMFM, and the fusion module played a crucial role in achieving these outcomes, indicating a significant enhancement in capturing detailed contextual information. Simple Summary: Despite multiple standardized interpretation criteria (SICs) for imaging response assessment in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), these systems remain relatively underutilized. Methods: "Squamous cell carcinoma" AND "standardized interpretation criteria" OR "radiographic response assessment" were searched using PubMed and Google Scholar for articles published between 2009 and 2024, returning 56 publications. After abstract review, 18 were selected for further evaluation, and 6 different SICs (i.e., PERCIST, Porceddu, Hopkins, NI-RADS, modified Deauville, and Cuneo) were included in this review. Each SIC is evaluated in the context of 8 desired traits of a standardized reporting system. Results: Two SICs have societal endorsements (i.e., PERCIST, NI-RADS); four can be used in the evaluation of locoregional and systemic disease (i.e., PERCIST, Hopkins, NI-RADS, Cuneo), and four have specific categories for equivocal imaging results (i.e., Porceddu, NI-RADS, modified Deauville, and Cuneo). Objective: To evaluate the use of reporting checklists and quality scoring tools for self-reporting purposes in radiomics literature. Methods: Literature search was conducted in PubMed (date, April 23, 2023). The radiomics literature was sampled at random after a sample size calculation with a priori power analysis. A systematic assessment for self-reporting, including the use of documentation such as completed checklists or quality scoring tools, was conducted in original research papers. These eligible papers underwent independent evaluation by a panel of nine readers, with three readers assigned to each paper. Automatic annotation was used to assist in this process. Then, a detailed item-by-item confirmation analysis was carried out on papers with checklist documentation, with independent evaluation of two readers. Results: The sample size calculation yielded 117 papers. Most of the included papers were retrospective (94%; 110/117), single-center (68%; 80/117), based on their private data (89%; 104/117), and lacked external validation (79%; 93/117). Only seven papers (6%) had at least one self-reported document (Radiomics Quality Score (RQS), Transparent Reporting of a multivariable prediction model for Individual Prognosis Or Diagnosis (TRIPOD), or Checklist for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (CLAIM)), with a statistically significant binomial test (p < 0.001). Median rate of confirmed items for all three documents was 81% (interquartile range, 6). For quality scoring tools, documented scores were higher than suggested scores, with a mean difference of − 7.2 (standard deviation, 6.8). Conclusion: Radiomic publications often lack self-reported checklists or quality scoring tools. Even when such documents are provided, it is essential to be cautious, as the accuracy of the reported items or scores may be questionable. Since deep learning is introduced to medical image segmentation, UNet and its variants have been extensively applied in medical image analysis. This paper proposes a multi-scale channel attention UNet (MSCA-UNet) to raise the accuracy of the segmentation in medical ultrasound images. Specifically, a multi-scale module is constructed to connect and to enhance the feature maps with different scales extracted by convolution. Subsequently, A channel attention mechanism is designed to compress feature maps through learnable depth separable convolutions. Eventually, we have explored the global feature module to establish the dependency between multi-level features. The proposed method is thoroughly evaluated and compared with the existing methods on four medical ultrasound image datasets. The experiments indicate that our method outperforms the SOTA method in accuracy on four medical ultrasound image datasets. Medical image denoising has numerous real-world applications. Despite their widespread use, existing medical image denoising methods fail to address complex noise patterns and typically generate artifacts in numerous cases. This paper proposes a novel medical image denoising method that learns denoising using an end-to-end learning strategy. Furthermore, the proposed model introduces a novel deep–wider residual block to capture long-distance pixel dependencies for medical image denoising. Additionally, this study proposes leveraging multi-head attention-guided image reconstruction to effectively denoise medical images. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed method outperforms existing qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods for numerous medical image modalities. The proposed method can outperform state-of-the-art models for various medical image modalities. Accurate medical image segmentation can assist doctors in observing lesion areas and making precise judgments. Effectively utilizing important multi-scale semantic information in local and global contexts is key to improving segmentation accuracy. In this paper, we present a multi-scale dual attention network (MSDA-Net), which enhances feature representation under different receptive fields and effectively utilizes the important multi-scale semantic information from both local and global contexts in medical images. MSDA-Net is a typical encoder–decoder structure and introduces a multi-receptive field densely connected module (MRD) in the decoder. This module captures semantic information across various receptive fields and utilizes dense connections to provide comprehensive and detailed semantic representations. Furthermore, a parallel dual-branch attention module (PDA), incorporating spatial and channel attention, focuses intensively on detailed features within lesion areas. This module enhances feature representation, facilitates the identification of disease boundaries, and improves the accuracy of segmentation. To validate the effectiveness of MSDA-Net, we conducted performance analyses on the CVC-ClinicDB, 2018 Data Science Bowl, ISIC 2018, and colon cancer slice datasets. We also compared our method with U-Net, UNet++, and other methods. The proliferation of data across multiple domains necessitates the adoption of machine learning models that respect user privacy and data security, particularly in sensitive scenarios like surveillance and medical imaging. Federated learning (FL) offers a promising solution by decentralizing the learning process, allowing multiple participants to collaboratively train a model without sharing their data. However, when applied to complex tasks such as object detection, standard FL frameworks can fall short in balancing the dual demands of high accuracy and stringent privacy. This paper introduces a sophisticated federated object detection framework that incorporates advanced differential privacy mechanisms to enhance privacy protection. Our framework is designed to work effectively across heterogeneous and potentially large-scale datasets, characteristic of real-world environments. It integrates a novel adaptive differential privacy model that strategically adjusts the noise scale during the training process based on the sensitivity of the features being learned and the progression of the model's accuracy. We present a detailed methodology that includes a privacy budget management system, which optimally allocates and tracks privacy expenditure throughout training cycles. Additionally, our approach employs a hybrid model aggregation technique that not only ensures robust privacy guarantees but also mitigates the degradation of object detection performance typically associated with DP. The effectiveness of our framework is demonstrated through extensive experiments on multiple benchmark datasets, including COCO and PASCAL VOC. Our results show that our framework not only adheres to strict DP standards but also achieves near-state-of-the-art object detection performance, underscoring its practical applicability. For example, in some settings, our method can lower the privacy success rate by 40% while maintaining high model accuracy. White blood cell (WBC) classification is pivotal in medical image analysis, playing a critical role in the precise diagnosis and monitoring of diseases. This paper presents a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture designed specifically for the classification of WBC images. Our model, trained on an extensive dataset, automates the extraction of discriminative features essential for accurate subtype identification. We conducted comprehensive experiments on a publicly available image dataset to validate the efficacy of our methodology. Comparative analysis with state-of-the-art methods shows that our approach significantly outperforms existing models in accurately categorizing WBCs into their respective subtypes. An in-depth analysis of the features learned by the CNN reveals key insights into the morphological traits—such as shape, size, and texture—that contribute to its classification accuracy. Dual-energy CT (DECT) imaging has broadened the potential of CT imaging by offering multiple postprocessing datasets with a single acquisition at more than one energy level. DECT shows profound capabilities to improve diagnosis based on its superior material differentiation and its quantitative value. However, the potential of dual-energy imaging remains relatively untapped, possibly due to its intricate workflow and the intrinsic technical limitations of DECT. Knowing the clinical advantages of dual-energy imaging and recognizing its limitations and pitfalls is necessary for an appropriate clinical use. The aims of this paper are to review the physical and technical bases of DECT acquisition and analysis, to discuss the advantages and limitations of DECT in different clinical scenarios, to review the technical constraints in material labeling and quantification, and to evaluate the cutting-edge applications of DECT imaging, including artificial intelligence, qualitative and quantitative imaging biomarkers, and DECT-derived radiomics and radiogenomics. The fusion of multi-modal medical images has great significance for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. However, the large differences between the various modalities of medical images make multi-modal medical image fusion a great challenge. This paper proposes a novel multi-scale fusion network based on multi-dimensional dynamic convolution and residual hybrid transformer, which has better capability for feature extraction and context modeling and improves the fusion performance. Specifically, the proposed network exploits multi-dimensional dynamic convolution that introduces four attention mechanisms corresponding to four different dimensions of the convolutional kernel to extract more detailed information. Meanwhile, a residual hybrid transformer is designed, which activates more pixels to participate in the fusion process by channel attention, window attention, and overlapping cross attention, thereby strengthening the long-range dependence between different modes and enhancing the connection of global context information. A loss function, including perceptual loss and structural similarity loss, is designed, where the former enhances the visual reality and perceptual details of the fused image, and the latter enables the model to learn structural textures. The whole network adopts a multi-scale architecture and uses an unsupervised end-to-end method to realize multi-modal image fusion. Finally, our method is tested qualitatively and quantitatively on mainstream datasets. Lesion segmentation is a fundamental task in medical image processing, often facing the challenge of subtle lesions. It is important to detect these lesions, even though they can be difficult to identify. Convolutional neural networks, an effective method in medical image processing, often ignore the relationship between lesions, leading to topological errors during training. To tackle topological errors, move is made from pixel‐level to hypergraph representations. Hypergraphs can model lesions as vertices connected by hyperedges, capturing the topology between lesions. This paper introduces a novel dynamic hypergraph learning strategy called DHLS. DHLS allows for the dynamic construction of hypergraphs contingent upon input vertex variations. A hypergraph global‐aware segmentation network, termed HGSNet, is further proposed. HGSNet can capture the key high‐order structure information, which is able to enhance global topology expression. Additionally, a composite loss function is introduced. The function emphasizes the global aspect and the boundary of segmentation regions. The experimental setup compared HGSNet with other advanced models on medical image datasets from various organs. Early detection of the adenocarcinoma cancer in colon tissue by means of explainable deep learning, by classifying histological images and providing visual explainability on model prediction. Considering that in recent years, deep learning techniques have emerged as powerful techniques in medical image analysis, offering unprecedented accuracy and efficiency, in this paper we propose a method to automatically detect the presence of cancerous cells in colon tissue images. Various deep learning architectures are considered, with the aim of considering the best one in terms of quantitative and qualitative results. As a matter of fact, we consider qualitative results by taking into account the so-called prediction explainability, by providing a way to highlight on the tissue images the areas that from the model point of view are related to the presence of colon cancer. The experimental analysis, performed on 10,000 colon issue images, showed the effectiveness of the proposed method by obtaining an accuracy equal to 0.99. Blinding eye diseases are often related to changes in retinal structure, which can be detected by analysing retinal blood vessels in fundus images. However, existing techniques struggle to accurately segment these delicate vessels. Although deep learning has shown promise in medical image segmentation, its reliance on specific operations can limit its ability to capture crucial details such as the edges of the vessel. This paper introduces LMBiS-Net, a lightweight convolutional neural network designed for the segmentation of retinal vessels. LMBiS-Net achieves exceptional performance with a remarkably low number of learnable parameters (only 0.172 million). The network used multipath feature extraction blocks and incorporates bidirectional skip connections for the information flow between the encoder and decoder. In addition, we have optimised the efficiency of the model by carefully selecting the number of filters to avoid filter overlap. This optimisation significantly reduces training time and improves computational efficiency. To assess LMBiS-Net's robustness and ability to generalise to unseen data, we conducted comprehensive evaluations on four publicly available datasets: DRIVE, STARE, CHASE_DB1, and HRF The proposed LMBiS-Net achieves significant performance metrics in various datasets. It obtains sensitivity values of 83.60%, 84.37%, 86.05%, and 83.48%, specificity values of 98.83%, 98.77%, 98.96%, and 98.77%, accuracy (acc) scores of 97.08%, 97.69%, 97.75%, and 96.90%, and AUC values of 98.80%, 98.82%, 98.71%, and 88.77% on the DRIVE, STARE, CHEASE_DB, and HRF datasets, respectively. In addition, it records F1 scores of 83.43%, 84.44%, 83.54%, and 78.73% on the same datasets. Our evaluations demonstrate that LMBiS-Net achieves high segmentation accuracy (acc) while exhibiting both robustness and generalisability across various retinal image datasets. This document is a preface to a special issue of the journal "Computation" on computational medical image analysis. The author highlights the progress made in this field over the past decade, with a shift towards machine-learning-based techniques. The special issue received enthusiastic responses from the academic community, with 12 successful submissions from authors based in 11 different countries and four continents. The document also includes a table summarizing the 12 papers published in the special issue, covering a range of applications such as eye melanoma detection, breast cancer detection, and COVID-19 classification. The advent of precision medicine, increasing clinical needs, and imaging availability among many other factors in the prostate cancer diagnostic pathway has engendered the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI). AI carries a vast number of potential applications in every step of the prostate cancer diagnostic pathway from classifying/improving prostate multiparametric magnetic resonance image quality, prostate segmentation, anatomically segmenting cancer suspicious foci, detecting and differentiating clinically insignificant cancers from clinically significant cancers on a voxel-level, and classifying entire lesions into Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System categories/Gleason scores. Multiple studies in all these areas have shown many promising results approximating accuracies of radiologists. Despite this flourishing research, more prospective multicenter studies are needed to uncover the full impact and utility of AI on improving radiologist performance and clinical management of prostate cancer. In this narrative review, we aim to introduce emerging medical imaging AI paper quality metrics such as the Checklist for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (CLAIM) and Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI), dive into some of the top AI models for segmentation, detection, and classification.
