Finding online research papers relevant to one's interests is very challenging due to the increasing number of publications. Therefore, personalized research paper recommendation has become a significant and timely research topic. Collaborative filtering is a successful recommendation approach, which exploits the ratings given to items by users as a source of information for learning to make accurate recommendations. However, the ratings are often very sparse as in the research paper domain, due to the huge number of publications growing every year. Therefore, more attention has been drawn to hybrid methods that consider both ratings and content information. Nevertheless, most of the hybrid recommendation approaches that are based on text embedding have utilized bag-of-words techniques, which ignore word order and semantic meaning. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach that leverages deep semantic representation of research papers based on social tags assigned by users. The experimental evaluation is performed on CiteULike, a real and publicly available dataset. The obtained findings show that the proposed model is effective in recommending research papers even when the rating data is very sparse.

Predicting the emergence of links in large evolving networks is a difficult task with many practical applications. Recently, the Science4cast competition has illustrated this challenge presenting a network of 64.000 AI concepts and asking the participants to predict which topics are going to be researched together in the future. In this paper, we present a solution to this problem based on a new family of deep learning approaches, namely Graph Neural Networks. The results of the challenge show that our solution is competitive even if we had to impose severe restrictions to obtain a computationally efficient and parsimonious model: ignoring the intrinsic dynamics of the graph and using only a small subset of the nodes surrounding a target link. Preliminary experiments presented in this paper suggest the model is learning two related, but different patterns: the absorption of a node by a sub-graph and union of more dense sub-graphs. With the recent advances in A.I. methodologies and their application to medical imaging, there has been an explosion of related research programs utilizing these techniques to produce state-of-the-art classification performance. Ultimately, these research programs culminate in submission of their work for consideration in peer reviewed journals. To date, the criteria for acceptance vs. rejection is often subjective; however, reproducible science requires reproducible review. The Machine Learning Education Sub-Committee of SIIM has identified a knowledge gap and a serious need to establish guidelines for reviewing these studies. Although there have been several recent papers with this goal, this present work is written from the machine learning practitioners standpoint. In this series, the committee will address the best practices to be followed in an A.I.-based study and present the required sections in terms of examples and discussion of what should be included to make the studies cohesive, reproducible, accurate, and self-contained. This first entry in the series focuses on the task of image classification. Elements such as dataset curation, data pre-processing steps, defining an appropriate reference standard, data partitioning, model architecture and training are discussed. The sections are presented as they would be detailed in a typical manuscript, with content describing the necessary information that should be included to make sure the study is of sufficient quality to be considered for publication. The goal of this series is to provide resources to not only help improve the review process for A.I.-based medical imaging papers, but to facilitate a standard for the information that is presented within all components of the research study. We hope to provide quantitative metrics in what otherwise may be a qualitative review process.

Soccer Simulation 2D League is one of the major leagues of RoboCup competitions. In a Soccer Simulation 2D (SS2D) game, two teams of 11 players and one coach compete against each other. The players are only allowed to communicate with the server that is called Soccer Simulation Server. This paper introduces the previous and current research of the CYRUS soccer simulation team, the champion of RoboCup 2021. We will present our idea about improving Unmarking Decisioning and Positioning by using Pass Prediction Deep Neural Network. Based on our experimental results, this idea proven to be effective on increasing the winning rate of Cyrus against opponents.

Conventional automatic doors cannot distinguish between people wishing to pass through the door and people passing by the door, so they often open unnecessarily. This leads to the need to adopt new systems in both commercial and non-commercial environments: smart doors. In particular, a smart door system predicts the intention of people near the door based on the social context of the surrounding environment and then makes rational decisions about whether or not to open the door. This work proposes the first position paper related to smart doors, without bells and whistles. We first point out that the problem not only concerns reliability, climate control, safety, and mode of operation. Indeed, a system to predict the intention of people near the door also involves a deeper understanding of the social context of the scene through a complex combined analysis of proxemics and scene reasoning. Furthermore, we conduct an exhaustive literature review about automatic doors, providing a novel system formulation. The fashion industry is one of the most active and competitive markets in the world, manufacturing millions of products and reaching large audiences every year. A plethora of business processes are involved in this large-scale industry, but due to the generally short life-cycle of clothing items, supply-chain management and retailing strategies are crucial for good market performance. Correctly understanding the wants and needs of clients, managing logistic issues and marketing the correct products are high-level problems with a lot of uncertainty associated to them given the number of influencing factors, but most importantly due to the unpredictability often associated with the future. It is therefore straightforward that forecasting methods, which generate predictions of the future, are indispensable in order to ameliorate all the various business processes that deal with the true purpose and meaning of fashion: having a lot of people wear a particular product or style, rendering these items, people and consequently brands fashionable. In this paper, we provide an overview of three concrete forecasting tasks that any fashion company can apply in order to improve their industrial and market impact. We underline advances and issues in all three tasks and argue about their importance and the impact they can have at an industrial level. This paper describes and discusses our vision to develop and reason about best practices and novel ways of curating data-centric geosciences knowledge (data, experiments, models, methods, conclusions, and interpretations). This knowledge is produced from applying statistical modelling, Machine Learning, and modern data analytics methods on geo-data collections. The problems address open methodological questions in model building, models' assessment, prediction, and forecasting workflows.

Prediction using the ground truth sounds like an oxymoron in machine learning. However, such an unrealistic setting was used in hundreds, if not thousands of papers in the area of finding graph representations. To evaluate the multi-label problem of node classification by using the obtained representations, many works assume in the prediction stage that the number of labels of each test instance is known. In practice such ground truth information is rarely available, but we point out that such an inappropriate setting is now ubiquitous in this research area. We detailedly investigate why the situation occurs. Our analysis indicates that with unrealistic information, the performance is likely over-estimated. To see why suitable predictions were not used, we identify difficulties in applying some multi-label techniques. For the use in future studies, we propose simple and effective settings without using practically unknown information. Finally, we take this chance to conduct a fair and serious comparison of major graph-representation learning methods on multi-label node classification., Accepted by AAAI 2022

The number of clinical citations received from clinical guidelines or clinical trials has been considered as one of the most appropriate indicators for quantifying the clinical impact of biomedical papers. Therefore, the early prediction of the clinical citation count of biomedical papers is critical to scientific activities in biomedicine, such as research evaluation, resource allocation, and clinical translation. In this study, we designed a four-layer multilayer perceptron neural network (MPNN) model to predict the clinical citation count of biomedical papers in the future by using 9,822,620 biomedical papers published from 1985 to 2005. We extracted ninety-one paper features from three dimensions as the input of the model, including twenty-one features in the paper dimension, thirty-five in the reference dimension, and thirty-five in the citing paper dimension. In each dimension, the features can be classified into three categories, i.e., the citation-related features, the clinical translation-related features, and the topic-related features. Besides, in the paper dimension, we also considered the features that have previously been demonstrated to be related to the citation counts of research papers. The results showed that the proposed MPNN model outperformed the other five baseline models, and the features in the reference dimension were the most important., 25 pages, 8 figures
