5G (5th Generation) and the related technologies implementation are expected in 2020. The 5G is considered to be a breakthrough of IoT devices in terms of enhanced bandwidth, efficiency, reliability and energy consumption. This study focuses on quantitative and qualitative progression of research in the field of 5G. It also provides the publishing trend, most productive and cited countries, organizations, and authors on 5G. In addition, it identifies the most frequently used keywords, authorship pattern and preferred journals. The research is based on 5G related research from Scopus database, which includes all relevant keywords of the field limiting it to conference papers, articles, book chapters, editorial and books. The outcome of the study revealed that 5G related research is on the rise worldwide. The number of yearly published articles has increased from one to 2222 during the period between 2003 and 2020. China, United States and United-Kingdom are most productive countries. Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications have taken lead in publishing 5G research. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that 19 out of these 20 most productive organizations in the world, seven belong to China. Majority of top 10 preferred journals are Q1 and published by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). The most popular authorship pattern is three-authors. More than 50 million journal papers will have been published by the end of 2019 with 2 million more journal papers published every year. The number of conference papers is even higher, and millions of other types of scientific research are added to the knowledge base every year. Scientific databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed index millions of scientific papers and Google Scholar indexes a huge amount of scientific knowledge across diverse domains. However, current systems provide long lists of results when users attempt to find relevant papers, leaving them with little choice other than manually skimming through the lists. This article surveys different techniques used to identify relevant research papers by knowledge-based organizations. We categorized current literature content as content, metadata, collaborative filtering, and citation based techniques and identified the strengths and limitation for each approach. Further, we evaluated the published techniques and research-based products used to identify relevant documents and identified the strengths and limitations of each approach. This research will greatly help to understand current state-of-the-art techniques internal workings for finding relevant papers, understand the relevant strengths and limitations, and explore previously proposed techniques targeting this area. Purpose -- Conference publications are an important aspect of research activities. There are generally both oral presentations and poster sessions at large international conferences. One can hypothesise that, for the same conferences, the papers presented in oral sessions should have a higher research impact than the papers presented in poster sessions. However, there has been no related study examining the validity of this hypothesis. In other words, the difference of research impact between papers presented orally or during poster sessions has not been discussed in literature. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to conduct a citation analysis to compare the research impact of papers presented in oral and poster sessions. Design/methodology/approach -- In this paper, data from three leading conferences in the field of computer vision are examined, namely CVPR (2011 and 2012), ICCV (2011) and ECCV (2012). Several types of citation-related statistics are collected, including the number of highly cited papers (i.e. high number of citations) presented in oral and poster sessions, the total citations of both types of papers, the average citations of oral and poster papers, and the average citations of each frequently cited paper of both types. Findings -- There are three main findings. First, a larger proportion of highly cited papers are from oral sessions than poster sessions. Second, the average number of citations per paper is larger for those presented in oral sessions than poster sessions. Third, the average number of citations for highly cited papers presented in oral sessions is not necessarily greater than for the ones presented in poster sessions. Originality/value -- The originality of this paper is that it is the first attempt to examine the differences of citation impacts of conference papers presented in oral and poster sessions.
