The study presented investigates the understanding of feminist literature by preschool children in a Spanish school. To carry out the research, semi-structured interviews with 65 students were performed, in order to discuss the story, The Paper Bag Princess. The data analysis was conducted under a poststructuralist lens, using the cultural matrix of gender as a tool for analysis. This document collects the results obtained from the following categories of analysis: emphasis on female beauty, discourse of romantic love, comparison with traditional stories (category maintenance work) and alternative discourses of femininity. The findings of the study indicate that boys and girls use two different strategies when coming in contact with feminist tales: comparing the feminist story to the, hitherto, considered 'correct' or natural order and correcting every element that challenged the structures of the cultural matrix. In this article, we examine a corpus of recommended Spanish-language picturebooks published in Spain and Latin America between 2012–2018. We examine a corpus of fifty-six books that have received awards or are highlighted by reading-promotion institutions inquiring into how race and ethnicity are narrated in them. We first notice a predominant whiteness in these picturebooks: often characters are "paper white," as their faces take the white of the default color of the paper. We undertake a critical content analysis informed by intersectionality and decolonial thinking to show how ethnicity is absent, erased, or folklorized in these recommended picturebooks. This article analyzes how the avant‐garde display techniques of the early Soviet period were remediated into the book format to transform visual literacy into production skills. Illustrated children's books adopted multi‐media visual techniques originally found in exhibitions to transform the printed page into a dynamic tool for teaching children how to become the workers of the future. In the 1920s and 1930s, Soviet displays were unrivaled propaganda tools, capable of activating and mobilizing visitors as much as modern media such as cinema and radio. Because of their reliance on a combination of tactile, visual, auditory and physical communication strategies, exhibitions offered Soviet authors and illustrators a set of formal and narrative strategies that responded to new theories of child‐reader perception in the field of Soviet pedagogy. By analyzing the representational language of At the Exhibition against the background of El' Lissitzky's demonstration room, I show that thematic and formal aspects of exhibition display transform the book into a visual template and a road‐map that gradually leads the reader from observing to making Soviet things. Similarly, in analyzing the role of text and image in the preschool picture book Our Review I show how curatorial strategies typical of dioramas are embedded in the book medium and transform it into an interactive display. Radically transformed into a portable diorama, the book becomes a training device directs the child‐reader to inscribe his or her actions into a system of collectively enforced social practices. Through the book‐turned‐display, Soviet children were trained into new visual practices that promised to transform them into producers, organizers and surveyors of their own culture. Early in the nineteenth century the London publishers and printsellers, S. and J. Fuller, packaged paper dolls and storybooks together in their Temple of Fancy paper doll books. This article examines the tension between the narratives of these works-typically moral tales for children in which a love of clothing is punished-and the accompanying paper dolls, which celebrate costume and dressing up. The textual morals against love of clothing are gendered in problematic ways, with female characters mortified for this flaw more readily than male characters. However, the variety of potential reading experiences offered by the form of the paper doll book, in which picture and word are separate, is viewed as a challenge to the gendered moral content of the stories. Ultimately this article argues that the form of the paper doll book sheds new light on D. F. McKenzie's (1986) ideas about how readers make meaning from texts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines literacy as a sociocultural, personal and human practice dependent on and derived through relationships between people, settings and culture. Drawing on a recent empirical research study that combines learner, teacher and author perspectives [Curtin (2023) Reading and Writing Pathways Through Children's and Young Adult Literature: Exploring Literacy, Identity and Story with Authors and Readers. Routledge], I explore how children's literature may be used to develop meaningful and authentic literacy pedagogies in the primary classroom. The research methodology for this study employed interviews with sixteen international and award-winning children's literature authors. This paper presents one author's interview from the study in detail in an effort to illustrate the importance of identity and personal resonance in literacy learning. Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) places value and benefits on children's play in nature-based outdoor spaces. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding teachers' support of play in environments with rugged terrains and natural materials. Therefore, this systematic review aims to locate, present, and discuss research literature on how teachers in ECEC settings can support children's play in nature-based outdoor spaces. According to the review, teachers' support of children's play was described in the literature as encouraging children's free and unstructured play through facilitating actions addressing the children's perspectives and the opportunities offered by the physical environment. Furthermore, teacher support was also described as teacher-led and teacher-guided interactions where teachers and children communicate or collaborate in playful situations. Differences and overlapping elements of types of teacher support are discussed, and implications for researchers, practitioners, and ECEC teacher education are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper considers how 'knowledge' of China was presented for Victorian and Edwardian children in The Boy's Own Paper ( BOP) between 1879 and 1914. It considers how genre affects the representation of China in the BOP by comparing travel narratives and adventure stories. First, it focuses on non-fiction about China, examining the rhetorical strategies employed by the authors of travel narratives. The travellers express confidence in their ability to survey the land and present readers with the idea that China is abundant in resources awaiting British discovery. Second, the article discusses adventure stories about opium and piracy written during a period when the tension between the British and the Chinese was particularly fraught over these issues. While the authors of the adventure stories created a strong contrast between the Chinese as villains and the British as heroes, the BOP travel writers provide contradictory statements within their narratives, reflecting an ambivalence about China and the Chinese. However, because the BOP contributors sought to instil a sense of patriotism, to inspire their readers to serve the British Empire, both the non-fiction travel narratives and the fictional adventure stories related to China were published not only to entertain readers with exotic facts and thrilling stories, but more importantly, to persuade them of the necessity of British intervention.
