This paper presents the modeling and simulation of an industrial-scale chemical looping combustion (CLC) power plant, including all process units (reactors, flue gas treatment units, heat integration, steam cycle, and CO2 compression train). A model of a 525 MWth CLC power plant was built using a rigorous representation of the solid fuel and oxygen carrier. Petcoke was considered the main fuel of interest in this study, and it is compared with other solid fuels. The flue gas compositions obtained with the model show that cleanup units are mandatory to comply with CO2 quality requirements. High levels of flue gas treatment, including 97.1% deNOx and 99.4% deSOx, are needed to achieve typical specifications for captured CO2. This is mainly due to the high level of contaminants in the fuel, but also to the absence of nitrogen in the CLC flue gas, thus resulting in higher concentrations for all substances. The high level of flue gas treatment is thus one of the important challenges for solid fuel combustion in CLC. The overall CO2 capture efficiency of the plant is estimated to be as high as 94%. Regarding the energy balance, a process net efficiency of 38% is obtained. Comparing the results with other available technologies shows that CLC exhibits one of the highest net plant efficiencies and carbon capture rates. CLC is thus a promising technology to produce clean energy from solid fuels. Finally, based on a sensitivity analysis, it is shown that process efficiency is mainly affected by the design and performance of the CLC furnace, the steam injection rate in the fuel reactor, the char separation efficiency, and the excess oxygen in the air reactor. Among a comprehensive scope of mitigation measures for climate change, CO capture and sequestration (CCS) plays a potentially significant role in industrialised countries. In this paper, we develop an analytical real options model that values the choice between two emissions-reduction technologies available to a coal-fired power plant. Specifically, the plant owner may decide to invest in either full CCS (FCCS) or partial CCS (PCCS) retrofits given uncertain electricity, CO, and coal prices. We first assess the opportunity to upgrade to each technology independently by determining the option value of installing a CCS unit as a function of CO and fuel prices. Next, we value the option of investing in either FCCS or PCCS technology. If the volatilities of the prices are low enough, then the investment region is dichotomous, which implies that for a given fuel price, retrofitting to the FCCS (PCCS) technology is optimal if the CO price increases (decreases) sufficiently. The numerical examples provided in this paper using current market data suggest that neither retrofit is optimal immediately. As a part of the strategic research program 'Advanced technologies for energy generation: Development of a technology for highly efficient zero-emission coal-fired power units integrated with CO capture', a mobile CO absorption pilot plant was erected. The main purpose of the pilot plant was to demonstrate the post-combustion technology in conjunction with a coal-fired power plant. The pilot plant captured CO by chemical absorption in amine-based solvents, which was considered to be the best adapted technology to the requirements of coal-fired power plants and suitable for retrofitting to existing units. The pilot plant captured up to 1000 kg/day of CO from the power plant's flue gases with CO recovery exceeding 90 %. The flexible process flowsheet of the pilot plant offered high potential for the validation of various improvements, which were designed to reduce the process energy demand and to increase the CO recovery. This paper summarizes the initial operation experience at the TAURON Łaziska Power Plant in Poland. Selected first results obtained are presented and discussed. The initial campaigns utilized 20 and 30 wt% monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions recognized as baseline solvents that were suitable for comparative purposes. Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) can sequester atmospheric CO2, while producing electricity. The CO2 avoidance cost (CAC) is used to calculate the marginal cost of avoided CO2 emissions for BECCS as compared to other established energy technologies. A comparative analysis using four different reference-case power plants for CAC calculations is performed here to evaluate the CO2 avoidance cost of BECCS implementation. Results from this work demonstrate that BECCS can generate electricity at costs competitive with other neutral emissions technologies, while simultaneously removing CO2 from the atmosphere. Approximately 73% of current coal power plants are approaching retirement by the year 2035 in the U.S. After considering CO2 sequestered from the atmosphere and coal power plant CO2 emissions displaced by BECCS, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 1.4 billion tonnes per year in the U.S. alone at a cost of $88 to $116 per tonne of CO2 removed from the atmosphere, for 10% to 90% of available biomass used, respectively. CAC calculations in this paper indicate that BECCS can help the U.S. and other countries transition to a decarbonized electricity grid, as simulations presented in this paper predict that BECCS power plants operate at lower CACs than coal plants with CCS. For CO 2 capture and storage deployment, the impact of impurities in the gas or dense phase CO 2 stream arising from fossil fuel power plants, or large scale industrial emitters, is of fundamental importance to the safe and economic transportation and storage of the captured CO 2 . This paper reviews the range and level of impurities expected from the main capture technologies used with fossil-fuelled power plants in addition to other CO 2 emission-intensive industries. Analysis is presented with respect to the range of impurities present in CO 2 streams captured using pre-combustion, post-combustion and oxy-fuel technologies, in addition to an assessment of the different parameters affecting the CO 2 mixture composition. This includes modes of operation of the power plant, and different technologies for the reduction and removal of problematic components such as water and acid gases (SO x /NO x ). A literature review of data demonstrates that the purity of CO 2 product gases from carbon capture sources is highly dependent upon the type of technology used. This paper also addresses the CO 2 purification technologies available for the removal of CO 2 impurities from raw oxy-fuel flue gas, such as Hg and non-condensable compounds. CO 2 purities of over 99% are achievable using post-combustion capture technologies with low levels of the main impurities of N 2 , Ar and O 2 . However, CO 2 capture from oxy-fuel combustion and integrated gasification combined cycle power plants will need to take into consideration the removal of non-condensables, acid gas species, and other contaminants. This paper describes a simplified method to estimate the cost of CO 2 avoided for a power plant with a novel CO 2 capture system based on only a limited number of fundamental input parameters used to establish basic mass and energy flows for the plant. The cost calculation method follows a sequential approach, estimating first the cost and efficiency penalty impacts of those elements of the plant that are standard and well characterized. We then define the cost gap allowed for the novel elements to break even against a benchmark plant. This method allows one to estimate: (i) the maximum cost reduction potential that a novel CO 2 capture technology can achieve with respect to a benchmark technology, and (ii) target breakeven costs for technology developers in the form of combinations of CAPEX and OPEX for a novel capture technology needed to make the technology competitive with the benchmark system. Case studies are presented applying the proposed method to post-combustion and oxy-combustion capture systems, showing that: (i) a clear relationship exists between the breakeven costs and the efficiency penalty caused by the CO 2 capture process, mainly because of its effect on the specific capital cost ($/kW e) of the conventional power plant components; and (ii) the minimum cost of CO 2 avoided is closely related to the capture system efficiency penalty. For the case study assumptions, avoidance costs vary from ∼20 $/t CO2 to ∼60 $/t CO2 for efficiency penalties ranging from 2.7% pts to 11% pts, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper estimates the cost of CO2 capture for three Australian industrial emission sources: iron and steel production, oil refineries and cement manufacturing. It also compares the estimated capture costs with those of post-combustion capture from a pulverised black coal power plant. The cost of capture in 2008 using MEA solvent absorption technology ranges from less than A$60 per tonne CO2 avoided for the iron and steel production to over A$70 per tonne CO2 avoided for cement manufacture and over A$100 per tonne CO2 avoided for oil refineries. The costs of capture for the iron and steel and cement industries are comparable to or less than that for post-combustion capture from a pulverised black coal power plant. This paper also investigates costs for converting low partial pressure CO2 streams from iron and steel production to a more concentrated stream using pressurisation and the water-gas shift reaction. In those cases, the costs were found to be similar to or less than the cost estimates without conversion. The analyses in this paper also show that estimated costs are highly dependent on the characteristics of the industrial emission source, the assumptions related to the type and price of energy used by the capture facilities and the economic parameters of the project such as the discount rate and capital costs. The article presents results of thermodynamic analysis using a zero-dimensional mathematical models of a negative CO2 emission power plant. The developed cycle of a negative CO2 emission power plant allows the production of electricity using gasified sewage sludge as a main fuel. The negative emission can be achieved by the use this type of fuel which is already a "zero-emissive" energy source. Together with carbon capture installation, there is a possibility to decrease CO2 emission below the "zero" level. Developed models of a novel gas cycle which use selected codes allow the prediction of basic parameters of thermodynamic cycles such as output power, efficiency, combustion composition, exhaust temperature, etc. The paper presents results of thermodynamic analysis of two novel cycles, called PDF0 and PFD1, by using different thermodynamic codes. A comparison of results obtained by three different codes offered the chance to verify results because the experimental data are currently not available. The comparison of predictions between three different software in the literature is something new, according to studies made by authors. For gross efficiency (54.74%, 55.18%, and 52.00%), there is a similar relationship for turbine power output (155.9 kW, 157.19 kW, and 148.16 kW). Additionally, the chemical energy rate of the fuel is taken into account, which ultimately results in higher efficiencies for flue gases with increased steam production. A similar trend is assessed for increased CO2 in the flue gas. The developed precise models are particularly important for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) energy system, where relatively new devices mutually cooperate and their thermodynamic parameters affect those devices. Proposed software employs extended a gas–steam turbine cycle to determine the effect of cycle into environment. First of all, it should be stated that there is a slight influence of the software used on the results obtained, but the basic tendencies are the same, which makes it possible to analyze various types of thermodynamic cycles. Secondly, the possibility of a negative CO2 emission power plant and the positive environmental impact of the proposed solution has been demonstrated, which is also a novelty in the area of thermodynamic cycles. In recent years, there has been a focus on clean power generation, and it is critical to assess the environmental impact of novel technologies used in pollution control in power generation. The study uses life cycle assessment (LCA) to assess the environmental impacts of coal-fired thermal power plants with different emission control techniques in an Indian scenario. As there are no such studies available in the Indian context, this work might provide a holistic view of the impacts of energy generation. A supercritical coal-fired plant with a capacity of 660 MW is considered in this study. The system boundary included coal extraction, transportation, power plant operation, and transmission losses of electricity with a functional unit of 1 kWh. It was observed that there was an energy penalty due to the power consumed in emission control devices, but the maximum energy penalty was due to the power used in the carbon capture system. The LCA is done from "cradle to gate", with impact indicators at the mid-point evaluated using the RECIPE (H) 2016 LCIA method. LCA results showed that power plant operation is the most significant contributor to environmental impact. Initially, in cases 1 and 2, climate change (CC) potential was a major impact category, but CC potential was reduced with carbon capture and storage, 0.27 kg CO2 eq. in case 3 with ESP, FGD, SCR, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) and 0.263 kg CO2 eq. in case 4 with ESP and CCS. But there was a considerable increase in the majority of the impact categories in case 4. Freshwater consumption potential increased from 3.98 E−03 m3 in base case 1 to 4.98 E−03 m3 in case 3 due to the amount of water used in chemical production during CCS, as CC potential is a major concern in power generation, However, compared to case 1, the potential for climate change increased in case 2, whilst in case 4, the potential for climate change is lower but has resulted in an increase in the majority of impact categories. The Polish power system has been reducing its impact on the environment for a long time, mainly through modernization and investments in new generation capacities, including renewable energy technologies. However, its starting point is still more difficult compared to other less coal-dependent power systems in the European Union. The study was conducted in the direction of optimizing the Polish energy mix of electricity generation from the perspective of 2050. Two energy scenarios for the possible transformation of the Polish power system towards achieving at least a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050 with an increasing share of renewables were analyzed. The study was carried out with the use of the TIMES-PL model, which minimizes the total system cost over the analyzed time horizon. The model was calibrated according to data from 2018. The two scenarios show relatively similar pathways for CO2 emission reductions by 2050. In the case of no investment in nuclear power plants, power plants equipped with CO2 capture and storage systems are an alternative solution for achieving climate neutrality and increasing national energy security. In the present paper, a CO 2 cryogenic capture for flue gas of an LNG-fired power generation system is proposed, in which LNG cold energy can be fully utilized during the gasification process. First of all, the flue gas is compressed to facilitate the CO 2 solid formation and separation. Sequentially, the CO 2 -removed flue gas expands to supply most of the cold energy needed for the cryogenic process. In comparison with traditional CO 2 -capture systems in LNG-fired power generation cycle, the new system does not require gasifying excessive amount of LNG. Based on the HYSYS simulation, the CO 2 capture pressure and temperature are investigated as the key parameters to find the appropriate working conditions of the CO 2 -capture system. The results show that the system can achieve a 90% CO 2 recovery rate or higher if the flue gas temperature can be lowered to less than −140 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Qatar is currently the highest emitter per capita and targets emission reduction by exercising tight controls on gas flaring. In order to limit the emission under allowances, the power plants have two options: investing in carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems or buying carbon credits for the excess emissions above their allowances. However, CCS systems are expensive for installation and operation. In this paper, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed for the design of integrated carbon capture, transport and storage infrastructure in Qatar under carbon trading scheme. We first investigate the critical carbon credit prices to decide under which price it is more beneficial to invest on CCS systems or to buy carbon credits via carbon trading. Then the fair design of the CCS infrastructure is obtained under two fairness scenarios: the same saving ratio and the game theory Nash approach. Fair cost distribution among power plants in Qatar is obtained by selecting the CO 2 resources (power plants) to be captured with available capture technologies and materials, designing the transportation pipeline network to connect the resources with the sequestration and/or utilisation sites and determining the carbon trading price and amount among power plants. Under different fairness scenarios, the total costs are slightly higher than that from minimising the total cost to obtain the fair cost distribution. Power plants with higher CO 2 emissions determine to install CCS system, while other power plants buy the carbon credits from domestic or international market to fulfil their carbon allowance requirements. The future work includes extending the current model by considering power generation distribution and designing the pipeline network with the selection of pump locations and pipe diameters. This paper assesses operational strategies for deploying flexible CO 2 capture at three generic black coal fired power plants with distinct dispatch profiles. Flexible operating modes involving constant partial CO 2 capture, part-time capture, and variable capture are examined in conjunction with seasonal effects of summer and winter. The three generic dispatch profiles are selected to represent typical black coal base load power plants in Australia and black coal power plants in Germany and perhaps future UK base load power plants in 2011. The results show that for a generic 700 MW subcritical power plant, operating under variable capture mode results in the highest amount of CO 2 captured and avoided and thus the lowest cost. The estimated cost of CO 2 avoided ranges from about $70 to $150 per tonne of CO 2 avoided using variable capture, increasing to $186 to $226 per tonne of CO 2 avoided for constant partial capture. The paper presents the structure and parameters of advanced zero emission power plant (AZEP). This concept is based on the replacement of the combustion chamber in a gas turbine by the membrane reactor. The reactor has three basic functions: (i) oxygen separation from the air through the membrane, (ii) combustion of the fuel, and (iii) heat transfer to heat the oxygen-depleted air. In the discussed unit hot depleted air is expanded in a turbine and further feeds a bottoming steam cycle (BSC) through the main heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). Flue gas leaving the membrane reactor feeds the second HRSG. The flue gas consist mainly of CO2 and water vapor, thus, CO2 separation involves only the flue gas drying. Amine absorption is a common method for CO 2 removal from flue gas of a power plant. The heat of regeneration, which is usually provided by steam extracted from the power cycle, reduces the power plant efficiency. In this paper, seven configurations of heat pumps integrated with CO 2 capture plant of a natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) power plant were evaluated using HYSYS software. The heat pump provides the regeneration heat as well as processes heating and cooling. Forty-one working fluids were investigated, and the most promising ones were R-141b and NH 3 , with as much as 3.1% savings in the efficiency. When the heat pump cooling and heating capacities were to be considered in the efficiency calculations, the enhancement in efficiency becomes as high as 13.6%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this paper we investigate the value of capture-readiness by modeling the cost effectiveness of various alternative technological options and focusing on different clean-coal technology pathways. The modeling framework developed is based on stochastic net present value calculations. It allows for consideration of path-dependent and technology-specific risk combinations inherent in the input and output commodities that are relevant for operating the plant. We find that capture-readiness competes with alternative options of power plant replacements and that capture-readiness is not necessarily preferable from an economic perspective. Abstract: Coupling flexible power generation with Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) technology may be important for substantial reductions in CO2 emissions. In this paper we consider some of the implications of flexible power plant operation on the CCS process. Specifically, we consider the CCS chain capacity selection decision, by which we mean the choice of the optimal plant size, to understand what determines the amount of CO2 that is efficient to capture and how the decision to invest in CCS chain capacity is affected by price volatility of CO2 emissions quotas. We found that the plant''s emissions profile determined a range of CCS capacities that could be efficient with the tradeoff between the price of CO2 emissions quotas and the cost of CCS technology determining the specific optimal chain capacity. Secondly, investment into CCS technology for a flexible load power plant was more likely to be delayed in a multiple time point investment decision tree model as a result of price volatility, compared to investment in CCS technology on a base load power plant. Abstract: Hydrogen production from fossil fuels together with carbon capture has been suggested as a means of providing a carbon free power. The paper presents a comparative exergetic analysis performed on the hydrogen production from natural gas with several combinations of reactor systems: (a) oxy or air fired autothermal reforming with subsequent water gas shift reactor and (b) membrane reactor assisted with shift catalysts. The influence of reactor temperature and pressure as well as operating parameter steam-to-carbon ratio, is also studied exergetically. Abstract: A great challenge China''s power sector faces is to mitigate its carbon dioxide emissions while satisfying the ever-increasing power demand. Optimal planning of the power sector with consideration of carbon mitigation for a long-term future remains a complex task, involving many technical alternatives and an infinite number of possible plants installations, retrofitting, and decommissioning over the planning horizon. This paper presents a multi-period modelling and optimization framework for the optimal planning of China''s power sector between 2010 and 2050. The planning horizon is divided into several time intervals, over which power plants of all types can be installed, retrofitted, or closed. Impacts of carbon mitigation related measures, including carbon cap and price, application of carbon capture and sequestration, are explicitly represented. A case study follows, based on real-life data of existing capacity of China''s power sector in 2009, and a year-by-year development plan for China''s power sector is proposed. Abstract: In conventional power plants, the attention paid to air in-leakage is minor. This is due to the low impact of air in-leakages on the cost effectiveness of the plant. However, in oxyfuel power plants the minimization of air in-leakages into the process becomes a crucial issue to improve the efficiency of the process. For this reason, it is an aim of the operator of an oxyfuel plant to identify and localize such leakages as early as possible to initiate appropriate maintenance steps. In the present, paper a data-based method is described that can serve as a monitoring tool for the plant. In case of increasing air in-leakages an early identification and localization of the disturbance is possible. The investigations are based on an experiment conducted in Vattenfall’s Oxyfuel Pilot Plant in Schwarze Pumpe, Germany. During the test leakage air was dosed into the process at several locations that are characteristic for leakages. The process data gathered in this experiment were later-on analyzed in a principal component analysis (PCA). It was found that the monitoring of appropriate process variables in a PCA model provides a possibility for both to identify increasing leakages and to localize the region where the leakage occurs. Abstract: Consistent with other published studies, the modelling presented here reveals that baseload power plants are the first aspects of the electricity sector to decarbonize and are essentially decarbonized once CO2 permit prices exceed a certain threshold ($90/ton CO2 in this study). The decarbonization of baseload electricity is met by significant expansions of nuclear power and renewable energy generation technologies as well as the application of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technologies applied to both coal and natural gas fired power plants. Relatively little attention has been paid thus far to whether intermediate and peaking units would respond the same way to a climate policy given the very different operational and economic context that these kinds of electricity generation units operate under. In this paper, the authors discuss key aspects of the load segmentation methodology used to imbed a varying electricity demand within the GCAM (a state-of-the-art Integrated Assessment Model) energy and economic modelling framework and present key results on the role CCS technologies could play in decarbonizng subpeak and peak generation (encompassing only the top 10% of the load) and under what conditions. To do this, the authors have modelled two hypothetical climate policies that require 50% and 80% reductions in US emissions from business as usual by the middle of this century. Intermediate electricity generation is virtually decarbonized once carbon prices exceed approximately $150/ton CO2. When CO2 permit prices exceed $160/ton CO2, natural gas power plants with CCS have roughly the same marketshare as conventional gas plants in serving subpeak loads. The penetration of CCS into peak load (upper 6% here) is minimal under the scenarios modeled here suggesting that CO2 emissions from this aspect of the U.S. electricity sector would persist well into the future even with stringent CO2 emission control policies in place. Abstract: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) might be an important climate protection technology for coal-rich countries. This paper presents first results of a systemic and long-term analysis of a future CCS implementation in India. It focuses on potential storage formations in the geological subsurface and the geographic match of these sinks with CO2 emissions of current and future largepoint power plants. The analysis is framed by an overview on India’s position on CCS, ongoing Indian research and development projects as well as its international activities. The geological potential for CO2 sequestration in India is subject to large uncertainty because, so far, only few studies estimated it in a vague manner. A first meta-analysis shows that there is a huge variation between 48 Gt and 572 Gt of CO2. The main differences between the evaluated studies are the assumed capacities for deep saline aquifers and basalt formations. Taking the ongoing discussion and the existing uncertainties into account, the storage potential might be provided only by aquifers (in the range of 44 to 360 Gt of CO2) and hydrocarbon fields (2 to 7 Gt of CO2). The amount of CO2 emissions possibly available for sequestration is assessed by applying three substantially different long-term energy scenarios for India. These scenarios, indicating pathways between a ”low carbon” and a ”high carbon” development until 2050, result in cumulated CO2 emissions between 30 and 171 Gt if all new large-scaled power plants will be based on CCS from 2020 on. Compared with the sink capacities, only the CO2 emissions of scenario S2 (30 Gt) could theoretically be stored with high certainty. Considering the scenarios S3 and S1, their CO2 emissions (94 Gt and 171 Gt, respectively) could only be sequestered if the aquifer capacity would prove to be usable. Geological storage sites do not appear to be located close to sources in South West, Central, North and North East India. This first rough analysis means that only those CO2 emissions occurring in the Western parts of North and West India, the Eastern part of South India as well as the South part of East India might be suited for sequestration nearby. A more detailed source-sink matching will follow in the next phase of the project, including results of expert meetings in India. Furthermore, this analysis will be complemented by an additional assessment from economic, ecological and resource-strategic points of view, which might further affect the potential for CCS. Abstract: Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) is a technology for reducing the amount of CO2 to be emitted into the air, by storing the CO2. However, a CCS project itself emits some CO2. Therefore, to estimate CCS’s net CO2 reduction effect, it is effective to apply life cycle assessment (LCA) to CCS projects. In this paper, we assumed a number of CCS project models to be feasible in Japan, and estimated the amount of CO2 emissions to store one ton of CO2 by applying LCA to the CCS projects. As a result, depending on the model case, 50% or more of the CO2 amount to be stored was emitted. The study also revealed that approximately 80% of the CO2 emissions at CCS-applied facilities derived from the energy consumed to re-heat the liquid absorbent that absorbed CO2. The study also indicated that a substantial amount of CO2 emissions can be reduced if heat integration is conducted between the production equipment and the CCS equipment for energy utilization, such as bleeding CO2 from a power station and other production equipment. Abstract: Oxyfuel combustion is considered to be an energy efficient process for carbon capture and storage in power plants. Compared to cryogenic air separation, oxygen supply by means of an oxygen transport membrane (OTM) is more energy efficient. This paper describes possible implementations of an OTM into an oxyfuel process, in particular that is three-end and four-end integration of the membrane whereby the focus is put on overall cycle efficiency and possible measures to improve cycle efficiency. Starting from a simple conservative integration of the membrane, several steps for improvement of the process efficiency are shown. With a three-end integration the maximum achievable efficiency is 40.1%, with a four-end integration of the membrane an overall efficiency of 40.7% including CO2 compression with 90% capture can be achieved for a hard coal fired power plant of 1210MWth compared to 45.9% efficiency for a reference power plant without carbon sequestration. In this case the effective energy demand for oxygen production can be reduced to . In a process variant in which the expansion turbine for the oxygen depleted air is co-fired, the combined efficiency reaches 46.1%. Although OTM operation in four-end design is preferable due to higher achievable net efficiencies, OTM operation in three-end design is likely to be technically viable at first since up to now no membrane material is available which withstands contact with flue gas. This paper presents the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis concerning the selected options of supercritical coal power units. The investigation covers a pulverized power unit without a CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) installation, a pulverized unit with a "post-combustion" installation (MEA type) and a pulverized power unit working in the "oxy-combustion" mode. For each variant the net electric power amounts to 600 MW. The energy component of the LCA analysis has been determined. It describes the depletion of non-renewable natural resources. The energy component is determined by the coefficient of cumulative energy consumption in the life cycle. For the calculation of the ecological component of the LCA analysis the cumulative CO2 emission has been applied. At present it is the basic emission factor for the LCA analysis of power plants. Abstract: This paper investigates new possibilities and synergy effects for an oxy-fuel fired polygeneration scheme (transportation fuel and electricity) with carbon capture and co-firing of biomass. The proposed process has the potential to make the oxy-fuel process more effective through a sub-stoichiometric combustion in-between normal combustion and gasification, which lowers the need for oxygen within the process. The sub-stoichiometric combustion yields production of synthesis gas, which is utilised in an integrated synthesis to dimethyl ether (DME). The process is kept CO2 neutral through co-combustion of biomass in the process. The proposed scheme is simulated with a computer model with a previous study of an oxy-fuel power plant as a reference process. The degree of sub-stoichiometric combustion, or amount of synthesis gas produced, is optimised with respect to the overall efficiency. The maximal efficiency was found at a stoichiometric ratio just below 0.6 with the efficiency for the electricity producing oxy-fuel process of 0.35 and a DME process efficiency of 0.63. It can be concluded that the proposed oxygen lean combustion process constitutes a way to improve the oxy-fuel carbon capture processes with an efficient production of DME in a polygeneration process. Abstract: This paper investigates conditions for a rapid ramp-up of a large-scale CO2 transport and storage infrastructure within the power and heat sector in EU’s Member States (MS). First, each MS is investigated individually with respect to the relevance of CCS in the power and heat sector. Second, the potential cost of CO2 transport and storage is evaluated and categorised into three levels for each MS with particular emphasis being put on power plant clusters, ownership concentration, source-sink distance and onshore storage potential. The chosen cost category for each member state is then used as input in a techno-economic modelling to evaluate the future electricity supply system in Europe as described elsewhere (Odenberger et al., 2008a). Finally, based on the modelling results, the study develops a detailed CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure for Germany and UK and discusses issues related to the ramp-up of such infrastructure. The analysis shows that most MS have identified structures that may be suitable for subsurface storage of CO2. Fourteen MS have so far identified onshore reservoirs only. Several MS have clusters of large power plants along with considerable national or regional concentration of plant ownership, factors that may both facilitate the ramp-up of a bulk CCS infrastructure. Phasing in of CCS plants over time will obviously play a key role in building up large-scale transport infrastructure. CCS plants are likely to be located on existing sites and coal plants currently under construction may choose to retrofit the plant for CCS instead of building new plants. CO2 pipeline trajectories are likely to follow existing trajectories for natural gas pipelines, minimising interference with the surroundings and facilitate and speed up permitting processes. Timing, conflicts of interest and public acceptance, especially onshore, are other factors that may become an issue with regard to transport and storage of CO2. According to model results, some 5.2 Gt CO2 is transported and stored in Germany between 2020 and 2050 while the corresponding figure in the UK is 3.7 Gt. Based on assumed injectivity, total system costs up to 2050 range between €18 and €23 billion in Germany and between €20 and €30 billion in the UK while specific costs range between €3.4 and €4.4 per ton of CO2 in Germany and between €5.4 and €8.1 in the UK. Finally, the modelling results indicate a rapid switch from gas based to coal based power generation with CCS. It is, however, likely that the large fuel switch from gas to coal will be moderated considerably by market dynamics and issues related to the fuel supply chain. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The EU electricity market is changing. Electricity demand in Europe is on the rise, the power plant fleet is aging, and a large share of the capacity will need to be replaced in the coming decades. An ambitious target has been formulated for the share of renewable energy, and CO2 prices are anticipated to increase. On top of this, CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) has appeared as an important technology in the transition to a long term sustainable energy supply. This paper discusses the implications all of the above developments for the EU electricity market, with an emphasis on the market North Western Europe. On the whole electricity prices in North Western Europe until 2020 are anticipated to increase, but this may only partly be ascribed to the pending introduction of CCS. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper assesses the three leading technologies for capture of CO2 in power generation plants, i.e., post-combustion capture, pre-combustion capture and oxy-fuel combustion. Performance, cost and emissions data for coal and natural gas-fired power plants are presented, based on information from studies carried out recently for the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme by major engineering contractors and process licensors. Heat storage (HS) instalment in combined heat and power (CHP) plants is a promising solution to increase the adjustability of CHP plants and reduce renewable energy curtailment. Despite the proposed optimisation models and algorithms, it still lacks a dispatching framework for HS facilities to integrate with the existing dispatching system of power grids. This study integrates a coordination control system (CCS) and a plant‐level energy management system (PEMS) into the existing dispatching system and proposes the corresponding scheduling method to ensure the rationality, veracity, and timeliness of scheduling. The CCS generates power and thermal generation schedules in multi‐time scales, while the PEMS operates as the bridge between the HS facilities and the CCS. Meanwhile, taking into account the actual scheduling requirements, the authors propose a downward spinning reserve capacity (DSRC) preservation method for the dispatch of CHP plants, develop multi‐level coordination and progressive refinement strategy for schedules and apply the DSRC as a criterion to obtain the day‐ahead, the rolling and the real‐time schedules in sequence. Finally, the dispatch simulation results show that the newly proposed CHP dispatching framework can schedule the HS facilities in CHP plants effectively and achieve the desired effect of wind power accommodation. Abstract: Carbon dioxide capture is regarded as an effective method of greenhouse gas reduction. Post‐combustion capture from power plants will play a key role in CO2 abatement due to their important contribution to total CO2 emissions. Compared with the state‐of‐the‐art amine scrubbing technology, adsorption‐based post‐combustion capture (PCC) possesses excellent potential for lowering energy demand, and thus the total cost. Due to their relatively weak interaction with CO2, carbons showed lower adsorption capacity during PCC as compared with some benchmark materials (e.g. amine‐based adsorbents); however, their high cyclic stability and fast adsorption/desorption kinetics suggest that carbons have the important potential to achieve an optimized or balanced performance, and thus provide a low‐cost PCC process. In this review, we present preparation options and consider the structure‐performance relationship in CO2 capture with carbons, and summarize recent progress on using carbons for CO2 capture with special focus on PCC. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Abstract: Near the coast of Rotterdam CO2 storage in the depleted P18-4 gas field is planned to start in 2015 as one of the six selected European demonstration projects under the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR). This project is referred to as the ROAD project. ROAD (a Dutch acronym for Rotterdam Capture and Storage Demonstration project) is a joint project by E.ON Benelux and Electrabel Nederland/GDF SUEZ Group and is financially supported by the European Commission and the Dutch state. A post-combustion carbon capture unit will be retrofitted to EONs’ Maasvlakte Power Plant 3 (MPP3), a new 1100MWe coal-fired power plant in the port of Rotterdam. The capture unit has a capacity of 250MWe equivalent and aims to capture 1.1million tonnes of CO2 per year. A 20km long insulated pipeline will be constructed to the existing offshore platform operated by TAQA and an existing well will be worked over and re-used for injection. Natural gas production in the P18-4 field is projected to end just before the start of the CO2 injection. In this first phase a total storage of around 5Mt CO2 is envisaged with an injection timeframe of 5 years. The paper gives a general introduction and overview of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) with an emphasis on the capture of CO 2 and other greenhouse gases from the waste gas streams of power plants and industrial processes. This stage accounts for about 80% of the overall cost of the CCS process so is the area where efficiency and cost improvements will have the greatest future impact. The major drivers for continuing to use fossil fuels for most of this century are first considered and the need to implement CCS as one of many measures to mitigate carbon emissions. Current targets will require a commercial CCS capacity to remove about 10Gte CO 2 pa by 2050. The overall features of CCS processes are described - capture, compression and transport, sub-surface storage - covering the main capture options and the three main types of storage site (deep saline aquifers, depleted oil and gas reservoirs and unmineable coal seams). The current status of large-scale CCS demonstration projects is reviewed. The main classes of carbon capture technologies are then described, both those currently capable of large-scale deployment and those in development for the future. Finally the main challenges facing CCS, to make it a globally-deployed commercially viable technology, are summarised and suggestions made for future developments in the clean recovery and use of fossil fuels which combine CCS with sub-surface processing. The study presents the results of an integrated assessment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in the power plant sector in Germany, with special emphasis on the competition with renewable energy technologies. Assessment dimensions comprise technical, economic and environmental aspects, long-term scenario analysis, the role of stakeholders and public acceptance and regulatory issues. The results lead to the overall conclusion that there might not necessarily be a need to focus additionally on CCS in the power plant sector. Even in case of ambitious climate protection targets, current energy policy priorities (expansion of renewable energies and combined heat and power plants as well as enhanced energy productivity) result in a limited demand for CCS. In case that the large energy saving potential aimed for can only partly be implemented, the rising gap in CO reduction could only be closed by setting up a CCS-maximum strategy. In this case, up to 22% (41 GW) of the totally installed load in 2050 could be based on CCS. Assuming a more realistic scenario variant applying CCS to only 20 GW or lower would not be sufficient to reach the envisaged climate targets in the electricity sector. Furthermore, the growing public opposition against CO storage projects appears as a key barrier, supplemented by major uncertainties concerning the estimation of storage potentials, the long-term cost development as well as the environmental burdens which abound when applying a life-cycle approach. However, recently, alternative applications are being increasingly considered-that is the capture of CO at industrial point sources and biomass based energy production (electricity, heat and fuels) where assessment studies for exploring the potentials, limits and requirements for commercial use are missing so far. Globally, CCS at power plants might be an important climate protection technology: coal-consuming countries such as China and India are increasingly moving centre stage into the debate. Here, similar investigations on the development and the integration of both, CCS and renewable energies, into the individual energy system structures of such countries would be reasonable.
