In cigarette production, the cellulosic paper essentially derived from flax fibers or other fiber materials is used as the wrapping material. During smoking of cigarettes, the highly toxic carbon monoxide is produced. To decrease the amount of carbon monoxide emission in the mainstream smoke, the engineering of all cigarette components including cellulosic cigarette paper and tobacco column is critical. This review summarizes the concepts related to engineering of cigarette paper. These mainly include permeability control, increased use of burn additives, optimization of fiber basis weight, engineering of calcium carbonate fillers, and incorporation of catalysts/oxidants. In particular, catalytic and/or oxidative conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide has been very widely reported. The control of permeability/diffusivity of cigarette paper is also of critical importance for enhanced diffusion of carbon monoxide out of the cigarette. The objective of this research was to apply Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and tunable infrared laser differential absorption spectroscopy (TILDAS) for measuring selected gaseous constituents in mainstream (MS) and sidestream (SS) smoke for experimental cigarettes designed to reduce MS CO using iron oxide cigarette papers. These two complimentary analytical techniques are well suited for providing per puff smoke deliveries and intra-puff evolution profiles in cigarette smoke respectively. The quad quantum cascade (QC) laser high resolution infrared spectroscopy system has the necessary temporal and spectral resolution and whole smoke analysis capabilities to provide detailed information for CO and CO(2) as they are being formed in both MS and SS smoke. The QC laser system has an optimal data rate of 20 Hz and a unique puffing system, with a square wave shaped puff, that allows whole smoke to enter an 18 m, 0.3 L multi-pass gas cell in real time (0.1s cell response time) requiring no syringe or Cambridge filter pad. Another similar multi-pass gas cell with a 36 m pathlength simultaneously monitors the sidestream cigarette smoke. The smoke from experimental cigarettes manufactured with two types of iron oxide papers were compared to the smoke from cigarettes manufactured similarly without iron oxide in the paper using both instrument systems. The delivery per puff determined by the QC laser method agreed with FTIR results. MS CO intra-puff evolution profiles for iron oxide prototype cigarettes demonstrated CO reduction when compared to cigarettes without iron oxide paper. Additionally, both CO and CO(2) intra-puff evolution profiles of the cigarettes with iron oxide paper showed a significant reduction at the initial portion of the 2 s puff not observed in the non-iron oxide prototype cigarettes. This effect also was observed for ammonia and ethylene, suggesting that physical parameters such as paper porosity and burn rate are important. The SS CO and CO(2) deliveries for the experimental cigarettes evaluated remained unaffected. The iron oxide paper technology remains under development and continues to be evaluated.

Carbon monoxide (CO) delivery molecules are of significant current interest as potential therapeutics, including for anticancer applications. A recent approach toward generating new types of materials-based anticancer agents involves combining the Fenton reactivity of a redox active metal ion with CO delivery. However, small molecule examples of these types of entities have not been systematically studied to evaluate the combined effect on cellular toxicity. Herein we describe a Cu(II) flavonolato complex which produces anticancer effects through a combination of copper-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and light-induced flavonol CO release. Confocal microscopy studies provide evidence of enhanced flavonol uptake in the copper flavonolato system relative to the free flavonol, which leads to an increased amount of CO delivery within cells. In 2014, the Hazelwood mine fire burned for 45 days. Local communities were impacted by smoke and ash, and there were reports of raised carbon monoxide levels. Local news and social media reported residents experiencing numerous physical symptoms of smoke inhalation, including bleeding noses, coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. Paper masks to filter particulate matter were made available to residents to wear outside. The dust and ash constantly seeped into homes and offices, which required cleaning daily and sometimes multiple times during the day. Smoke was free to move across physical and bodily boundaries while those most vulnerable were hampered by lack of movement: pregnant women, the elderly and children were advised to leave the area. However, this suggestion to 'simply' move ignored the context of a community disproportionately impacted through years of economic decline and societal change. This paper explores the unequal mobilities of smoke and people that arose as a result of this event and draws on concepts of mobility justice (Sheller 2018) and emergency mobilities (Adey 2016) to reflect on the political dimensions of uneven mobility in times of crisis. A moderately thermophilic, anaerobic, chemolithoheterotrophic, sulfate-reducing bacterium, strain CO-1-SRB(T), was isolated from sludge from an anaerobic bioreactor treating paper mill wastewater. Cells were Gram-positive, motile, spore-forming rods. The temperature range for growth was 30-68 degrees C, with an optimum at 55 degrees C. The NaCl concentration range for growth was 0-17 g l(-1); there was no change in growth rate until the NaCl concentration reached 8 g l(-1). The pH range for growth was 6.0-8.0, with an optimum of 6.8-7.2. The bacterium could grow with 100% CO in the gas phase. With sulfate, CO was converted to H(2) and CO(2) and part of the H(2) was used for sulfate reduction; without sulfate, CO was completely converted to H(2) and CO(2). With sulfate, strain CO-1-SRB(T) utilized H(2)/CO(2), pyruvate, glucose, fructose, maltose, lactate, serine, alanine, ethanol and glycerol. The strain fermented pyruvate, lactate, glucose and fructose. Yeast extract was necessary for growth. Sulfate, thiosulfate and sulfite were used as electron acceptors, whereas elemental sulfur and nitrate were not. A phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences placed strain CO-1-SRB(T) in the genus Desulfotomaculum, closely resembling Desulfotomaculum nigrificans DSM 574(T) and Desulfotomaculum sp. RHT-3 (99 and 100% similarity, respectively). However, the latter strains were completely inhibited above 20 and 50% CO in the gas phase, respectively, and were unable to ferment CO, lactate or glucose in the absence of sulfate. DNA-DNA hybridization of strain CO-1-SRB(T) with D. nigrificans and Desulfotomaculum sp. RHT-3 showed 53 and 60% relatedness, respectively. On the basis of phylogenetic and physiological features, it is suggested that strain CO-1-SRB(T) represents a novel species within the genus Desulfotomaculum, for which the name Desulfotomaculum carboxydivorans is proposed. This is the first description of a sulfate-reducing micro-organism that is capable of growth under an atmosphere of pure CO with and without sulfate. The type strain is CO-1-SRB(T) (=DSM 14880(T)=VKM B-2319(T)).

Abstract: Secondary pulp/paper-mill sludge (SPP) and sewage sludges (primary, secondary, and digested sewage sludges) were treated in supercritical water at temperatures ranging between 400°C and 550°C over 20–120min for energy recovery. Low temperature and short reaction time favored the formation of heavy oil (HO) products, which were mainly composed of a variety of phenol and phenolic compounds, as well as some nitrogen-containing compounds, long-chain alkenes and alcohols, etc., with high gross calorific values (>36MJ/kg). By contrast, the formation of synthetic gases, a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, and other light hydrocarbons, were not significantly affected by reaction time but greatly enhanced with increasing temperature. The highest gas yield was obtained at 550°C, where 37.7wt.% of the SPP (on dry basis) was converted into gases, with hydrogen yields as high as 14.5mol H2/kg SPP (on a dry basis). In comparison to sewage sludges, SPP exhibited a greater capability for the production of HO and gases owing to its higher contents of volatiles and alkali metals, indicating a prospective utilization potential for SPP as a source of bio-energy. At the core of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) active site two metal ions together with hydrogen bonding scheme from amino acids orchestrate the interconversion between CO2 and CO. We have designed a molecular catalyst implementing a bimetallic iron complex with an embarked second coordination sphere with multi‐point hydrogen‐bonding interactions. We found that, when immobilized on carbon paper electrode, the dinuclear catalyst enhances up to four fold the heterogeneous CO2 reduction to CO in water with an improved selectivity and stability compared to the mononuclear analogue. Interestingly, quasi‐identical catalytic performances are obtained when one of the two iron centers was replaced by a redox inactive Zn metal, questioning the cooperative action of the two metals. Snapshots of X‐ray structures indicate that the two metalloporphyrin units tethered by a urea group is a good compromise between rigidity and flexibility to accommodate CO2 capture, activation, and reduction. In order to deepen the knowledge of transformer fire dynamics and its fire prevention, an experimental study on autoignition and combustion characteristics of pure insulating transformer paper board (PIPB) and oil-impregnated transformer insulating paper board (OIIPB) were performed. Ignition time, heat release rate (HRR), O, CO and CO concentrations were obtained by a cone calorimeter under different external radiant heat fluxes. The results show that two peaks of HRR occurred during the burning process of PIPB, where three peaks occurred for the OIIPB. The first peak of the OIIPB occurred earlier than that of PIPB, which indicates that OIIPB is more ignitable, but the maximum HRR of PIPB is higher than that of OIIPB, which indicates that the combustion intensity of PIPB is larger. The PIPB has a relatively higher CO and CO yield and O consumption. The results demonstrate that both the tested 3-mm-thick PIPB and OIIPB samples in this study can be considered as thermally thick materials. Autoignition time of OIIPB and PIPB under external heat fluxes could be predicted based an empirical model, and the critical heat fluxes were obtained based on the models and the ignition data. • Shrub-like pt-rh catalysts with different metallic ratios on carbon paper were prepared by laser ablation. • The catalysts displayed higher tolerance to CO and higher catalytic activity towards ethanol oxidation. • Pt-Rh catalysts demonstrated long-term poisoning rates eight times lower than pt. Plasmas techniques are novel routes for the preparation of complex nanostructured materials for catalysis and clean hydrogen energy such as fuel cells. CBPLD technique allows enhanced interaction between the catalyst and the support and improved catalytic properties. Herein, a highly active and durable vertically aligned nanostructured shrub-like bimetallic Pt x Rh 100-x alloys with atomic ratios close to nominal values are grown on carbon paper substrate. The tolerance to CO poisoning and ethanol electrooxidation reactions are studied over these new types of shrub-like bimetallic Pt x Rh 100-x /CP catalysts, demonstrating that such structures effectively facilitate both processes and very low long-term poisoning rates. Such high catalytic activity accounts for two mechanisms: Rh a highly oxophilic transition metal activates water dissociation at lower potentials than Pt (bifunctional mechanism), and the ligand effect where Rh alters the electronic structure of the neighboring Pt suggesting a faster supply in OH ads. Abstract: Preparation of Pt–Ru electrocatalyst was successfully performed on carbon paper by one-step co-electrodeposition method. Particle size and density were controlled by deposition potential and time. Coverage of the catalysts deposited on the carbon paper was significantly related to the composition of the electrolyte. Catalyst particles were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and the crystal structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Bulk and surface compositions of the electrocatalysts were obtained by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICPMS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The Pt–Ru electrocatalyst with a surface molar ratio of 51.7 Pt and 48.3 Ru showed the highest catalytic activity for methanol oxidation and the strongest tolerance against carbon monoxide poisoning. Thin-cut smoking tobacco is gaining more and more popularity among consumers of tobacco products. However, this type of product remains poorly understood, including the chemical composition of its smoke. The analysis of the data on the chemical composition of the smoke of smoking tobacco products of various designs is an urgent task from the point of view of assessing the toxic load. It will help further to develop recommendations and suggestions for consumers in the manufacture of these products. The main purpose of this work is to study the effect of the product design (diameter, weight and air permeability of paper) on the chemical composition of smoke and tasting assessment. This article discusses the technological properties of smoking tobacco brands: «Pepe», «Stanley», «Corsar», «Redmont». The chemical composition of tobacco (nicotine, proteins, carbohydrates and pH) was analyzed. The analysis of the composition and breathability of paper for self-rolled cigarettes of the brands «OCB Premium» and «OCB Organic Hemp» used for the manufacture of tobacco products from thin-cut tobacco, of different diameters. The influence of the design features of the products (diameter and weight) was studied on the chemical composition of smoke (nicotine, resin, carbon monoxide). Experimentally, the dependence of the chemical composition of smoke on the air permeability of paper and the design features of thin-cut tobacco products has been established: when using paper with low air permeability and with an increase in the diameter and weight of products, the nicotine content increases by 37,55% and resin by 39,54%. The dependence between the nicotine content in tobacco and nicotine in the smoke of tobacco products from thin-cut tobacco was revealed.

This article presents an algorithm for modelling an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) for power transformer paper conditions in order to estimate the transformer's expected life. The dielectric characteristics, dissolved gasses, and furfural of 108 running transformers were collected, which were divided into 76 training datasets and another 32 testing datasets. The degree of polymerization (DP) of the transformer paper was predicted using the ANFIS model based on using the dielectric characteristics and dissolved gases as input. These inputs were analyzed, and the best combination was selected, whereas CO + CO2, acidity, interfacial tension, and color were correlated with the paper's deterioration condition and were chosen as the input variables. The best combination of input variables and membership function was selected to build the optimal ANFIS model, which was then compared and evaluated. The proposed ANFIS model has 89.07% training accuracy and 85.75% testing accuracy and was applied to a transformer paper insulation assessment and an estimation of the expected life of four Indonesian transformers for which furfural data is unavailable. This proposed algorithm can be used as a furfural alternative for the general assessment of transformer paper conditions and the estimation of expected life and provides a helpful assistance for experts in transformer condition assessment. Purpose: Sensing technology has been extensively researched and used due to its applications in industrial production and daily life. Due to inherent limitations of conventional silicon-based technology, researchers are now-a-days paying more attention to flexible electronics to design low-cost, high-sensitivity devices. This observational and analytical study aims to emphasis on carbon monoxide gas sensor. This review also focuses the challenges faced by flexible devices, offers the most recent research on paper-based gas sensors and pays special focus on various sensing materials and fabrication techniques. Design/methodology/approach: To get the better insight into opportunities for future improvement, a number of research papers based on sensors were studied and realized the need to design carbon monoxide gas sensor. A number of parameters were then gone through to decide the flexibility parameter to be considered for design purposes. This review also focuses on the challenges faced by flexible devices and how they can be overcome. Findings: It has been shown that carbon monoxide gas, being most contaminated gas, needs to be fabricated to sense low concentration at room temperature, considering flexibility as an important parameter. Regarding this parameter, some tests must be done to test whether the structure sustains or degrades after bending. The parameters required to perform bending are also described. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) has recently been recognized as the third important physiologically gasotransmitter after carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide. The challenge of accurate measurement of H 2 S at micromolar levels in biological samples represents a major impediment to the investigation of H 2 S. Here a light emitting diode-based photometer was fabricated for the rapid and point of care measurement of sulfide in human serum samples via marriage of gas separation with paper enrichment. Sulfide in the sample was converted into H 2 S by the addition of diluted H 3 PO 4 and liberated from the sample matrix by the bubble of nitrogen gas (N 2 ). The liberated H 2 S was subsequently captured by a methyl green-impregnated paper filter placed at front of the detector. Upon reaction with H 2 S, the paper filter decolorized that was real-time monitored in transmission mode. With 0.2 mL sample, serum sulfide level within the range 10.0–200.0 μmol/L can be accurately measured in less than 2.5 min. The bubble of N 2 into the matrix promotes the mixing of sample with the added acid and helps the liberation of H 2 S. The addition of defoaming agent SE-15 into the matrix effectively prevented the frothing during aeration. The device was applied to the determination of sulfide in human serum and compared satisfactory with that of methylene blue method implemented on a commercial spectrophotometer. The carbon monoxide deliveries of 20 major Canadian brands of cigarettes, determined by gas chromatography and using standard smoking conditions, were estimated and found to vary by a factor of about two. The CO yields were found to increase with puff volume and tobacco moisture, decrease with increased paper porosity, but remain essentially constant with puff duration. The data suggest that reduced CO deliveries can be achieved by increasing the cigarette paper porosity. Combustion temperature presumably also influences CO deliveries, but the relative role ascribed to dilution and combustion is not clear. It may be concluded that smokers can lower their CO exposure by reducing their puff volume, smoking cigarettes manufactured from high porosity paper, by taking fewer puffs, and decreasing their tendency to inhale. Since CO and tar deliveries are correlated, these measures would also tend to decrease a smoker's exposure to tar.

The rapid urbanization and industrialization have caused a significant increase in environmental pollution, especially in air quality. This paper introduces an IoT-based environmental monitoring system to address these issues. Using state-of-the-art IoT technology, the system deploys sensors in key locations to continuously collect data on air quality indicators like Particulate Matter (PM), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Ozone (O3). The collected data is wirelessly transmitted to a central server for processing and analysis. The system provides real-time and historical data through a user-friendly interface, enabling users to monitor current conditions, identify trends, and identify potential pollution sources. The key features include scalability, allowing for the addition of new sensors, and proactive decision-making through alerts when environmental parameters exceed predefined thresholds. This paper aims to empower communities with the knowledge needed to address and mitigate air pollution, creating healthier and more liveable urban environments in the face of rapid global urbanization. Abstract: Copper–zinc oxide catalyst powders were successfully prepared into paper-like composites, called catalyst paper in this study, using ceramic fibers as the carrier matrix of the catalyst. A papermaking technique with a dual polyelectrolyte retention system was used. Catalyst particles were supported on the ceramic fiber networks tailored in the catalyst paper having various types of pores. Pieces of catalyst paper were subjected to methanol steam reforming (MSR) to produce hydrogen gas for fuel cell applications. They demonstrated a higher performance for methanol conversion and hydrogen production in the MSR reaction than commercial Cu/ZnO catalyst pellets, exhibiting an efficacy equivalent to that of the original catalyst powders. The concentration of carbon monoxide, which acts as a catalytic poison for fuel electrode catalysts, decreased remarkably, without any carbon monoxide reduction system. Moreover, the porous structure of catalyst paper influenced the MSR efficiency. It was assumed that the macropores ca. 20μm in diameter greatly contributed to the MSR performance, rather than the mesopores on the catalyst surfaces. Thus, the porous, flexible and easy-to-handle catalyst paper is a promising material for practical MSR applications. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper investigates the impact of combining CO2 capture and storage with alternative systems for biomass-based combined heat and power production (CHP) in Kraft pulp and paper mills. We compare heat, power, and CO2 balances of systems with alternative configurations of the CHP and CO2-capture systems. Because the captured CO2 comes from renewable biomass, the studied systems yield negative CO2 emissions. It is shown that pulp mills and integrated pulp and paper mills have the potential to become net exporters of biomass-based electricity while at the same time removing CO2 from the atmosphere on a net basis. The study shows that that the overall best CO2 abatement is achieved when CO2 capture is carried out within a biomass integrated gasifier with combined cycle where the syngas undergoes a CO-shift reaction. This configuration combines efficient energy conversion with a high CO2 capture efficiency. Furthermore, cost curves are constructed, which show how the cost of CO2 capture and storage in pulp and paper mills depends on system configuration and the CO2 transportation distance. Syngas, a gaseous mixture of CO, H 2 and CO 2 , can be produced by gasification of carbon-containing materials, including organic waste materials or lignocellulosic biomass. The conversion of bio-based syngas to chemicals is foreseen as an important process in circular bioeconomy. Carbon monoxide is also produced as a waste gas in many industrial sectors (e.g., chemical, energy, steel). Often, the purity level of bio-based syngas and waste gases is low and/or the ratios of syngas components are not adequate for chemical conversion (e.g., by Fischer-Tropsch). Microbes are robust catalysts to transform impure syngas into a broad spectrum of products. Fermentation of CO-rich waste gases to ethanol has reached commercial scale (by axenic cultures of Clostridium species), but production of other chemical building blocks is underexplored. Currently, genetic engineering of carboxydotrophic acetogens is applied to increase the portfolio of products from syngas/CO, but the limited energy metabolism of these microbes limits product yields and applications (for example, only products requiring low levels of ATP for synthesis can be produced). An alternative approach is to explore microbial consortia, including open mixed cultures and synthetic co-cultures, to create a metabolic network based on CO conversion that can yield products such as medium-chain carboxylic acids, higher alcohols and other added-value chemicals., (© 2021.
