This annotated bibliography lists over 300 instructional materials and teaching guides relevant to Native education in Alberta (Canada). The bibliography includes materials related to Native history, culture, traditional values, lifestyles, legends, family life, children, and contemporary issues. The bibliography is divided into four sections: Native education project books developed in Alberta with input from Native people; books for elementary students; books for junior and senior high school students; and audiovisual materials for students and teacher reference. Each book entry includes title, author, publisher, publication date, price, description, a brief annotation, and ISBN number. Audiovisual listings include title, distributor, production date, format, running time, grade level, brief description, and catalogue number. The guide also includes ordering information for materials and a list of audiovisual suppliers. (LP)

This bibliography of books either written by Canadians or with Canadian content is compiled and distributed to all Manitoba schools in order to assist teachers, librarians, and administrators in the selection of quality materials. Grade levels, not necessarily the same as reading levels, are indicated by broad categories: early years (K-4); middle years (5-8); and senior years (9-12). The materials are rated by the following categories: highly recommended; recommended; recommended with reservations; and not recommended by reviewer. Where provided, price and ISBN number are included for each item. Subject headings used are the ones which correspond most closely to the subjects taught in school and include: Activity Books; Art--Hobbies & Crafts; Canadian Studies; Guidance; Health; History; Home Economics--Family Life; Language and Literature; Miscellaneous; Native Studies; Professional Development; Reference; Science; Social Studies; and Women's Studies. This annotated bibliography provides assistance to researchers in locating manuscripts and archival material on Canadian subjects. Two main sections comprise this guide. The first section lists bibliographies of manuscript and archival collections, annual reports of government archives, and union lists of manuscripts. The bibliographies determine that particular items exist at certain locations and they indicate the subject matter or nature of the collections. Part two contains directories of archives, museums and historical societies, and libraries. Directories indicate potential location of materials such as a special subject location in a library or the existence of an archive. Within each section, materials are listed alphabetically by author or source. (ND)

A list of 29 sources of French Canadian materials for children has been compiled including addresses of publishing agencies, catalog numbers, and prices of the catalogs. The information pamphlet was issued in both French and English. (AP)

To be updated on a continuing basis, the resources listed in this catalogue are for teachers and students who are interested in Native people's contributions to Alberta and Canada, their histories, and their cultures. Section 1 includes two titles, "The Land of the Bloods" and "The Peigan: A Nation in Transition," which have been approved as basic resources for the Alberta curriculum and have been developed by the Native Education Project in cooperation with school personnel and the Native community. Both titles are available from the Alberta Learning Resources Distributing Centre. Section 2 lists 61 titles that are not approved learning resources, but have been reviewed and recommended by committees of Native teachers. The resources have also been scrutinized using Alberta Education's tolerance and understanding criteria and have been found to meet these criteria. Each entry includes title, author, publisher, date of publication, source from which the material is available, a brief description (including format), an annotation, the reviewer's comments, and suggested grade level. Published between 1969 and 1986, the materials include mostly books (three of which are written both in English and French), filmstrips, and wallcharts. (JMM/ERB)

The guide contains over 250 source materials about Canada in the reference department of McLennan Library at McGill University. Many of the sources mentioned are basic to all Canadian studies; therefore, the guide replaces an earlier one (ED 130 965) on "Canadiana" published by McLennan Library in 1974. The first six sections list encyclopedias, handbooks, chronologies, almanacs, annual reviews, and statistical sources about Canada. Section seven, which comprises the main body of the guide, presents bibliographies. These are grouped into six categories: general and historical bibliographies about Canada; regional bibliographies about specific provinces; topical bibliographies including foreign affairs, industry, and ethnic groups; theses and research; newspaper bibliographies; and bibliographies of periodicals. Section eight briefly lists periodical titles on Canadian history, regional history, and related subjects. Each entry gives information on title, publisher and date, McLennan Library catalog and shelf numbers, and a short description of each book's content. This bibliography provides a list of sources for students, scholars, and librarians who want information about theses completed or in preparation at Canadian universities. The sources are presented under three headings: general bibliographies, theses lists by university, and specialized bibliographies. For monographic items, the author, title, and publishing information are recorded; for serial literature, the listing provides the title of the article, the periodical title, and the volume, number, and date. The list is intended as a guide for Canadian young adult readers in search of a literature they can identify as their own. This revised and updated bibliography of multicultural publications supported by the Canadian government includes annotations in both French and English. Historical, literary, ethnographic, linguistic, and research documents and teaching guides representing or targeted to a variety of different ethnic groups are presented. Drawing on items reviewed in 1 of 18 selected Canadian and American booklists or guides to reference literature, this publication cites selections for core reference in Manitoba school libraries. Reference works were chosen on the basis of available reviews, the acknowledged diversity in Manitoba's school libraries, and student needs. Included are general encyclopedic works and atlases and maps, as well as reference material in philosophy, religion, statistics, political science, education, vocational guidance, customs, folklore, language, pure sciences, mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, life sciences, botanical sciences, zoological sciences, medical sciences, the arts, music, sports, recreation, literature, history, geography, biography, and Canadian history. Each entry contains bibliographic information, a Dewey Decimal call number, indications of intended educational level and purchase priority, a price (in Canadian dollars), and a brief review of the work with the source of the review given. A study was conducted to identify the major areas of investigation in recent Canadian adult education literature. During the study, questionnaires were distributed to 216 adult educators located at 32 postsecondary educational institutions throughout Canada. Materials including 556 articles, books, reports, and proceedings papers were identified. The adult learner was the focus of most of the papers, as evidenced by their titles; other approaches that received frequent attention in the literature examined were teaching methods and conditions for learning. Examination of the relative percentages of publications on various topics revealed that 32 percent of books and proceedings published dealt with adult education in general, 23 percent were concerned with continuing and extension education, 14 percent dealt with education, and 6 percent dealt with counseling and psychology. Other topics included higher education, vocational education, community development, distance education, and literacy and adult basic education. (Appended to this study are a brief thesaurus of adult education synonyms, a list of Canadian adult education authors, and a list of postsecondary sponsors of adult education.
