Purpose – This paper aims to put forward a group multicriteria supplier selection model to select suppliers adequate to companies needs in food industries. Selecting the right suppliers has become a strategic problem for firms. This decision should take into account several factors, which involve both quantitative and qualitative considerations and, usually, includes many interested parties. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed model consists of two phases. Initially,a survey of food industries in Brazil was carried out so as to identify the factors that should be considered in the supplier selection decision process. In the second step,a selection model was developed, based on these findings and the factors identified, and an application of the model was conducted. Findings – This model uses criteria that are important for the food industries in Brazil and, considering this criteria, helps companies to select the adequate suppliers to their needs. Additionally, the model considers the preferences of the managers who actively participate in the process. Originality/value – The model helps the company in the selection of suppliers,as it is very important for the corporation to have partnerships with suppliers who can adequately meet its needs. Additionally,a group method was applied, which allows all the managers that will be affected by this decision to participate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BUSINESS partnerships , *INTERNATIONAL relations , *ECONOMICS - Abstract
This paper claims that the forging of a common identity among India, Brasil and South Africa based on their role as leaders in their respective regions is a relevant yet neglected aspect of their partnership that will ultimately determine the success of IBSA. The argument is that the foundational south identity of the IBSA initiative retains ideological elements drawn from the heyday of the confrontational politics of Non-Alignment which do not adequately (or at least do not fully) represent the contemporary political and economic context of its members. Linked to this is the fact that, while acknowledged as powers by dint of their preponderance of economic and material means, this has not translated into wide-spread recognition within their respective regions. For all these reasons, IBSA relies primarily on an elite defined form of south activism as a key source of legitimacy for its endeavors. The construction of a strong regional identity for IBSA based on its members' strategic positions in South Asia, South America and Southern Africa is, in our viewpoint, a more convincing common ground to legitimize a sustainable diplomatic partnership between the IBSA states. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to draw attention to the intricacies of hybrid network governance in a challenging institutional landscape. The empirical focus is a case study of the recovery process from the Fundão dam rupture, Brazil's most significant environmental disaster, and the largest in the world involving tailings dams. To drill into the barriers to cross-sector partnerships, we adopted a multi-methods approach, including interviews, grey materials and documents, participant observation and social network analysis. We identified interrelated barriers and grouped them into institutional, power and knowledge barriers, which act through a positive feedback loop leading to a structural arrangement that is inadequate for collaboration in disaster management. As a result, the Doce river basin's recovery process has taken the form of a wicked industrial disaster, enabling a "chain reaction" of increasing wickedness. We thereby advance cross-sector partnership research by drawing attention to the underlying causes of failure and offer guidance to public and private managers on possible strategies to address the barriers to cross-sector partnerships. • Wicked industrial disasters are processual phenomena, not just an event with an impact. • Interrelated barriers create a positive feedback cycle hindering collaboration. • Cross-sector partnerships barriers are complex and create uncertainty and dispute. • Cross-sector partnership should have been formed based on moral and material concerns. Strategic Networks (SNs) have emerged as a prevalent organizational form that offers synergistic benefits to participating firms. Despite their potential, SNs often experience member firms' departure, raising concerns about their long-term viability. This study explores the factors that influence firms' decisions to exit SNs by examining the interplay between network maturity, member firms' satisfaction, and their individual characteristics. Using data from 338 Brazilian firms involved in SNs, a cluster analysis was employed to identify distinct groups of firms based on shared attributes. The findings revealed a significant association between higher perceived maturity, greater satisfaction with SNs, and lower likelihood of departure. These results suggest that network leaders should prioritize cultivating a mature and satisfying SN environment to mitigate member exits. By identifying the critical distinctions between the remaining and departing firms, this study provides valuable insights for network managers seeking to strengthen the longevity and stability of their strategic partnerships. Purpose -- This paper seeks to identify collaboration elements and evaluate their intensity in the Brazilian supermarket retail chain, especially the manufacturer-retailer channel, Design/methodology/approach -- A structured questionnaire was elaborated and applied to 125 representatives from suppliers of large supermarket chains, Statistical methods including multivariate analysis were employed. Variables were grouped and composed into five indicators (joint actions, information sharing, interpersonal integration, gains and cost sharing, and strategic integration) to assess the degree of collaboration, Findings -- The analyses showed that the interviewees considered interpersonal integration to be of greater importance to collaboration intensity than the other integration factors, such as gain or cost sharing or even strategic integration, Research limitations/implications -- The research was conducted solely from the point of view of the industries that supply the large retail networks, The interviews were not conducted in pairs; that is, there was no application of one questionnaire to the retail network and another to the partner industry, Practical implications -- Companies should invest in conducting periodic meetings with their partners to increase collaboration intensity, and should carry out technical visits to learn about their partners' logistic reality and thus make better operational decisions, Originality/value -- The paper reveals which indicators produce greater collaboration intensity, and thus those that are more relevant to more efficient logistics management, [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The central issue that guided the study was that of understanding how emerging market SMEs in the audiovisual industry overcome their liabilities of smallness, newness, outsidership, foreignness and emergingness when entering foreign markets through licensing. Using an abductive approach to the case method of investigation, the study analyzes three cases of animation studios from an emerging market, Brazil. The results show that the firms are quite different in the way they approach the international market through licensing. Each firm follows a trajectory that is strongly connected to its time of inception and its technological options. They use different approaches to overcome their liabilities, and thus deal with issues related to uncertainty, risk, commitment, and control. The study contributes in several ways to the understanding of how emerging market SMEs overcome their liabilities and enter foreign markets via licensing, including: establishing strategic partnerships, taking advantage of technology disruptions and industry turmoil early on, partnering with new players that are still building their networks, using home government incentives, and using the advantages of emergingness to enter alternative markets. Supply chain coordination (SCC) can be a challenge for many organizations as different firms in the same chain has different expectations and interdependencies (Arshinder & Deshmukh, 2008). Lack of SCC can result in the bullwhip effect and poor performance for a firm and its partners. By investigating the phenomenon in the Brazilian pharmaceutical supply chain using a qualitative research, this paper aims to understand the main issues that avoid a better integrated chain. Results of 21 interviews suggested that the lack of coordination in this environment was influenced by the network design and the history of the sector in Brazil, as well as scarce resources. Brazil and China are rapidly developing a strategic alliance based on the two economies' short and long-term strategic goals. This paper assesses the impact of China on the Brazilian economy and discusses the challenges and opportunities permeating this strategic relationship. This case study suggests that Chinese and Brazilian relations represent a paradigm shift in our conventional understandings of political and economic behavior. More specifically, it suggests that the growing interdependence between big emerging economies no longer requires for large Western economies to mediate the economic exchanges that shape the global agenda. Furthermore, we suggest that in spite of very strongly perceived competitive behavior, the increased interaction between these two nations and the institutionalization of economic ventures is compelling these nations to imagine themselves increasingly as partners in a newly conceived, socially distinct, transnational dimension. To explore the significance of this behavior, we employ perspectives on international trade and globalization, including a brief CAGE analysis, to characterize Sino-Brazilian relations in the context of the 21st century global political economy. Purpose – This study aims to assess the moderating effect of the business network on the effects of between relational behavior and the effects of transaction-specific investments on joint actions. Design/methodology/approach – The study was a survey based field study designed using theoretical support from marketing channels, transaction cost economics and network perspectives. Findings – The results show the importance of relational behavior and the network in coordinating joint actions, and this has relevant managerial implications for the coordination of a collaborative relationship. The characteristics of the relationship, its length as well as the size of each partner affect the collaborative efforts of the partners. Practical implications – Firms and managers should understand not only the dyadic relationships they are in but also the network structure. Dyadic characteristics affect collaboration, while the network also has effects on the collaboration of partners in vulnerable positions. Originality/value – The paper points out the role of the network as a countervailing safeguard for dyadic TSIs and network stability. Dyadic relationships are supported by the network. This paper focuses on partnerships across the state-society divide in the management of bulk water in the state of Ceará, in Northeast Brazil. It examines the creation of Users' Commissions in two of Ceará's river basins--the Lower Jaguaribe/Banabuiú and the Curú. It is argued that the presence of synergy across the state-society divide is critical to guarantee meaningful public participation. In turn, meaningful participation improves decision making at the river basin level and supports positive values in policy making such as decentralization, equity, accountability and transparency. This paper argues that, with trade and business exchange, cultural change is introduced to business partners. After analyzing the impact of trade in societies, leading to the transformation of traditional holistic ideologies to individualistic ones, Brazilian society is appraised as a dual culture existing under a constant tension between the demands of social hierarchy and predatory individualism. The paper argues that Brazil's dual culture has been a deterrent to economic remedies that worked in societies that experienced industrialism. Finally, the possibility of cultural changes is assessed and considered as a condition for Brazil's partnership in today's global markets. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

China and Brazil established the "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" in 2012. Since the establishment of the partnership, China and Brazil have continued to deepen economic and trade cooperation, and cooperation in various fields has achieved remarkable results. China has long been consistent in maintaining its status as Brazil's largest export destination and source of imports. The total volume of bilateral trade between China and Brazil has significantly increased, and the trade structure in goods is becoming increasingly diversified. The total volume of bilateral trade between China and Brazil has grown considerably, and the trade structure in goods has become increasingly diversified. On 20 April 2023, when Brazilian President Lula visited China, China and Brazil issued a joint statement on deepening the "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership", further deepening the cooperation in trade in goods has become a consensus. From the perspective of goods trade under the comprehensive strategic partnership, the article analyses the complementarities and competitiveness of goods trade between China and Brazil with the help of relevant formulas to form a complete and transparent study of the goods trade between the two countries. This paper puts forward a model for selecting suppliers and evaluating the performance of those already working with a company. A simulation was conducted in a food industry. This sector has high significance in the economy of Brazil. The model enables the phases of selecting and evaluating suppliers to be integrated. This is important so that a company can have partnerships with suppliers who are able to meet their needs. Additionally, a group method is used to enable managers who will be affected by this decision to take part in the selection stage. Finally, the classes resulting from the performance evaluation are shown to support the contractor in choosing the most appropriate relationship with its suppliers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: There are at least 607 thousand households in the Brazilian Amazon that need to be attended with some form of regular electricity service. These households are not attended by the electricity sector through its electricity distribution companies and most of them have some form of precarious decentralized electricity generation that is not registered or regulated in the institutional framework. Diverse initiatives were taken by Brazilian government to attend these household through alternatives that relied on locally available renewable energy. This paper accesses this initiatives of rural electrification in the Brazilian Amazon. First an overview of the problems of rural electricity are discussed and its specificities in the Brazilian Amazon. Then the Brazilian institutional framework that organizes the decentralized electricity generation is described with its various limitations. The diverse initiatives undertaken to attend the rural communities in the Amazon since the 1990s are described, as well as how these initiatives are linked to the policies for rural electrification. The results shows that it can be inferred that sole market mechanisms are not sufficient to guarantee economic sustainability of these projects. This can be one of the reasons why traditional electricity distribution companies showed the lack of interest in promoting rural electrification with other means than grid extension. The most successful projects had financed efforts to integrate the generation of electricity into local development initiatives in order to guarantee sustainability and used substantial part of funding for local mobilization and organization. It needs a paradigm chance by treating these initiatives as local development initiatives and promoting alternative ways for its implementation through partnership between local new actors in the electricity sector and government and implementing policy on a local municipal level. This study adopts an institutional approach in the case analysis of China's economic statecraft towards Brazil. In light of institutionalisation theory, it examines the institutional arrangements between Beijing and Brasilia for the purpose of facilitating bilateral economic cooperation and advancing strategic partnership. As a descriptive effort, it yields some preliminary findings: first, the institutionalisation of China's economic statecraft towards Brazil is incremental, driven largely by the desire for and belief in long-term planning; second, a set of norms, values, and principles is instituted alongside designated agencies, point persons, operational protocols, and exchange mechanisms, creating a form of institutional governance based on a multi-actor, multilevel, and network-based steering mode; third, governance remains so centralised that it falls short in empowering strategic participation; and, fourth and finally, Beijing's institution-building proves useful in the management of relations with Brazil, suggesting that economic statecraft may benefit from institutionalisation. Between 1500 and 1840, ships under Portuguese colors embarked more than 5 million enslaved men, women and children from the coasts of Africa. Despite its position as the preeminent slave trading empire in the Atlantic World, no studies have systematically traced the evolution in maritime investment practices in Portugal and its American colonies which propelled this massive forced transportation of captive Africans. Beginning with Portuguese merchants' earliest forays into Atlantic trade, on the West African island of Cabo Verde in the fifteenth century, maritime cargoes were collectively owned through the distribution of small shares. Drawing on medieval Mediterranean precedents, these collective, legally constructed partnerships opened early transoceanic trading opportunities to a diverse group of traders, colonists, and mariners, creating a decentralized mercantile trade which diffused profits throughout slave trading communities. Slaving merchants in Salvador da Bahia adopted this collectivist model of investment by the early eighteenth century, converting commercial disadvantages into a prosperous and durable trade which wove together the economic interests of a heterogeneous cross-section of Salvador's inhabitants—including merchants, their families and slaves, and mariners—within the business of slaving. This article traces the persistence of this financial strategy, and argues that it enabled the longevity of the transatlantic slave trade in Salvador. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sharing knowledge has been identified as an essential element of innovation that brings with it a competitive advantage in economies increasingly centered on knowledge. Considering that organizations behave as markets of knowledge, they should create spaces and places where this exchanging of knowledge can happen, knowing that most cases take place through personal sharing. For many, sharing knowledge can be seen as a process where the creation and transfer of knowledge occurs between its origin and destination within a specific and informal context, pointing out to the fact that often it is not considered "actual work". Usually the context in which the organization operates in co-creation such as universities, development agencies, junior companies, research laboratories, consulting firms, etc., contribute directly to the collective construction of organizational knowledge, which leads to innovation and economic performance. The main objective of this research is to analyze the contribution from emerging Brazilian junior companies as collaborative partners for sharing knowledge and innovation. The study was set up as qualitative and the data were treated with statistical use and presented through mode and the intra-case approach. The results show that junior companies, even with their size of intellectual production, have a collaboration that is distant from the reality for building knowledge and innovation, and they are not an appropriate partner for fostering the economy of knowledge in Brazil. This article analyzes how and where women participated in Brazilian commerce between 1869 and 1904. Over half of Rio de Janeiro's female population worked at the twentieth century's turn, but very little is known about women in commerce. Evidence from formal business partnership contracts demonstrates that women comprised a significant and dynamic sector of the merchant community, despite legal and social barriers. More importantly, their business habits largely paralleled those of their male counterparts. These findings break from current scholarship that narrowly defines businesswomen as exceptional. An analysis of female economic activity, along with the institutional structures regulating their market participation, suggests that gender shaped women's entrance into the market but only narrowly affected their pursuits. Recognizing the various ways that women considered the legal and social demands of their civil status with the broader demands of the market offers a more complete portrait of female economic activity during one of Brazil's most impressive eras of expansion. In this article, the Brazilian Model for Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is described. It was conceived envisaging investments for the completion of new electric sustainable power plants. The objective is to present the main drivers in Brazilian regulatory system for private investors in what relates to risks configuration and investment decision-making, either Brazilian or foreign ones. We analyzed the investment in 5 Brazilian power plants that altogether constitute an electric power-generating complex in Juruena River, in the state of Mato Grosso, in Brazil. According to the results, we can conclude that the present legal framework is able to support investment in small hydroelectric and sustainable power plants, considering the existence of Engineering Procurement Contracts (EPC) for the completion phase and of Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) for the operational phase as well. Joint operating agreements are fairly common in the petroleum industry. Generally speaking, they are signed in the English language for investors convenience and for the lack of translation to Portuguese language (until quite recently). However, Brazilian regulations require the translation of any foreign document to Portuguese language in order to produce legal effect and to become enforceable in Brazil. Although there is clear mandatory obligation to translate any foreign document to Portuguese language, this has not been the current practice in the Brazilian Upstream sector. Several questions arise from this matter. First, why people bear those risks. Secondly, what are the remedies involved. Therefore, it is critical to understand the consequences between such legal requirement and current practice in the upstream sector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We construct an individual-level data set of partnership contracts in late-nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro to study the determinants of contract terms. Partners with limited liability contributed more capital and received lower draws for private expenses and lower profit shares than their unlimited partners. Unlimited partners in turn received higher-powered incentives when they contracted with limited partners than when they contracted with unlimited partners. A reform that changed the relative bargaining power further improved the terms of unlimited partners in limited firms. These findings highlight the roles of risk, incentives, and bargaining power in shaping contracts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Considering the situation of low performance of joint ventures, a certain number of studies have concluded that there is a close relationship between the initial conditions of creation of joint ventures and their success or failure. Nevertheless, other explanatory factors can be identified through dynamic analysis of the joint venture. For this purpose, on the basis of the case of the Franco-Brazilian Algar-Bull joint venture in the information technology sector, from its creation in 1983 to its dissolution in 1998, the aim of our research is to study the influence of external evolution processes ( partners' adaptive strategies and changes in environmental constraints) on the success or failure of a joint venture. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
