This article approaches the 1995 collapse of Barings Bank from a psychoanalytic perspective, focusing on the role of risk-taking trader Nick Leeson in the bank's demise. The author discusses organizational psychology, and argues that the unconscious fears of the conservative bank executives led them to choose Leeson as an opposite, or 'shadow' to themselves in hopes that he would rescue the bank.
