ABO blood type has been reported to be a predictor of poor prognosis in critically ill patients. Here, we aim to correlate different blood types with clinical outcomes in patients with severe burns. We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study by enrolling patients with severe burn injuries (≥40% TBSA) between January 2012 and December 2017. Baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes were compared between disparate ABO blood types (type O vs non-O type). Multivariate logistic and linear regression analyses were performed to identify an association between ABO blood type and clinical outcomes, including in-hospital mortality, the development of acute kidney injury (AKI), and hospital or ICU length of stay. A total of 141 patients were finally enrolled in the current study. Mortality was significantly higher in patients with type O blood compared with those of other blood types. The development of AKI was significantly higher in patients with blood type O vs non-O blood type (P = .001). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that blood type O was independently associated with in-hospital mortality and AKI occurrence after adjusting for other potential confounders. Our findings indicated the blood type O was an independent risk factor of both increased mortality and the development of AKI postburn. Objective: Information about epidemiology on burns is rare in China. The aim of this article is to describe the pattern of burns in East China during a 10-year time period.Method: A retrospective data analysis was performed on all hospitalized patients to the burn center at the Changhai hospital, one of major burn centers in East China, from 2005 to 2014.Results: We included 3376 patients in this study. Among them, 48.1% were from 27 provinces out of Shanghai and nearly 90% were from East China. August saw the most admissions and November saw the fewest. Spring and summer separately dominated in number of female and male patients. Children aged 2-5 and working-age adult were the most commonly treated. Home was the commonest place of injury, followed by industrial-related places, outdoors, public buildings, and vehicles or roads. Scalds remained the primary reason, followed by fire, contact burns, electricity, and chemicals. The average %TBSA of male patients was 14.2±21.3, significantly different from that of female patients (10.4±16.9). Extremities were the most vulnerable body region burned, followed by the trunk, face and hands. The average hospital length of stay in male patients was 25.4±72.4 days, significantly different from that of females' 19.9±27.6 days. The total mortality was 1.8% and the lethal area burned resulting in 50% mortality was 96.5% TBSA.Conclusion: Compared with published data, these result are encouraging, which demonstrate that burn care and treatment has made significant progress. Burn clinicians should bear not only the responsibility to treat and cure burns, but also the popularization of knowledge about burn precautions and emergency treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Background: This article reports a chemical burn incident that occurred on August 7th, 2005, when a Matsa typhoon hit Shanghai, China. This is the largest chemical burn incident reported in the literature for 20 years in China, involving 118 alkali burn patients who were rescued by the Burn Department of Shanghai Changhai Hospital independently. Methods: The scene of the incident was investigated, and the clinical, emergency and hospitalized data of the patients were summarized. Results: The main injurious chemical was a water solution of sodium hydroxide and ammonium chloride. The 118 victims were mostly young men with 5%TBSA deep thickness burn of both lower extremities, including 31 patients who had additional light coughing. Of 58 patients who were finally hospitalized, 42 patients received surgical treatment. Most of these patients recovered within 1 month. There were no deaths. Discussion: Retrospective analysis of the therapeutic data of the incident demonstrates that pre-designed disaster planning for emergency management of mass burn patients, an effective command group, accurate assessment of pathological conditions, and correct allocation of different casualties are key elements in successful management in a mass casualty even involving burn patients. Objective: The objective of this study was to conduct a survey of the academic contribution and influence of Chinese scholars in the field of burns.Method: The PubMed database was searched to obtain literature items originating from various countries and Chinese provinces from 1985 to 2014. The citation data were collected through the Google Scholar engine.Results: A total of 1037 papers published in 256 journals were included in this survey. China was second only to the USA in the number of publications on burns since 2010. In addition, the annual number of papers has increased significantly since 2001. The journal Burns published the most number of articles, but its proportion has been decreasing. Of the papers included in the survey, 58.34% were published in journals with a 5-year impact factor between 1 and 2, whereas only 3.66% were published in journals with an impact factor >5. Both total citations and citations per paper have decreased in the past decade. Randomized controlled trials or systematic reviews merely accounted for a small proportion. Twenty-nine provinces including 64 cities contributed one paper at least. The publications from Taiwan, Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Guangdong were high in both quantity and quality.Conclusion: The Chinese academic contribution to the field of burns is now on a rise. Although the quality of papers is lagging behind quantity, scholars and academies are dedicated to improving China's academic level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Regular observation of the morphology and density of keratinocytes seeded on the surface of a dermal substitute in the process of constructing composite skin ex vivo is of great significance for the assessment of cell survival, proliferative capacity and the growth rate. But dermal substitutes being commonly used now are opaque, it is impossible to see the seeded cells under a phase-contrast microscope. This article reports a new method of staining the composite skin specimen directly by hematoxylin-eosin without sectioning it, hyalinizing the dermal substitute, and then observing the perfect morphology and number of cells on the surface of the dermal substitute under an ordinary light microscope. This method is simple, quick and able to make an overall judgment about the growth and proliferation of cells from a plane level. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose: The study was performed to estimate the diagnostic blood loss (DBL) volume during hospitalization and investigate its relationship with the development of moderate to severe hospital acquired anemia (HAA) and increased number of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion following extensive burns.Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study of adult burned patients with total body surface area (TBSA) burn larger than 40%, who were admitted to burn center of Changhai hospital between January 2005 and December 2017.Results: We included a final number of 157 patients in the present study. Moderate to severe HAA within the fourth week postburn was developed in 46 of 121 patients who stayed over 28-day hospitalization. Patients with moderate to severe HAA had both significantly higher total DBL volume [245 (IQR: 183.75, 325.25) mL vs 168 (119, 163) mL ; P = 0.001] and DBL volume per day [10.22 (IQR: 8.57, 12.38) mL vs 6.63 (5.22, 10.42) mL/day; P = 0.005]. Logistic regression analysis revealed that both DBL volume per day and TBSA burn were independent risk factors for the development of moderate to severe HAA.Conclusions: Severely burned patients appear to be prone to develop HAA during hospitalization. The DBL volume contribute to the occurrence of moderate to severe HAA, which might be a modifiable target for preventing HAA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate whether a three-dimensional (3-D) wound scanner could be used to measure the area of scars. Scar models were constructed using flesh-colored, brown-colored (simulating hyperpigmented scars), orange-colored (simulating scars with obvious vascularization), and white-colored (simulating hypopigmented scars) plastic. Each colored plastic was used to construct scar models with regular and irregular base surfaces (four each). Two human models were selected to simulate patients with scars, and the scar models were placed on the right cheek, right lower jaw-neck, right ulnar forearm, anterior tibial region of the right calf, and at the back of these human models for scar area measurement. Two experimenters separately measured the scar area vertically using the profile method, pixel method, and 3-D wound scanner. Each experimenter measured the scar area thrice. Regarding accuracy, we found significant differences between the data and standard value of various measurement methods (P<0.05); however, the ratio of the data and standard value using the 3-D wound scanner was 0.982, which was the closest to 1, and showed the lowest coefficient of variation. Regarding correlation, Spearman's coefficient using the 3-D wound scanner was 0.992, showing the strongest correlation. With respect to inter-experimenter reliability and stability of retesting, each Cronbach's coefficient of the 3-D wound scanner between the two experimenters was >0.90, showing high reliability; thus, fulfilling the requirements for clinical measurement. The 3-D wound scanner took an average time of 38.87±3.45s for measurement, which was significantly shorter compared that for other methods The 3-D wound scanner showed greater accuracy and correlation, and a shorter measurement time, compared with other measurement methods The inter-experimenter reliability and retesting stability of the 3-D wound scanner also fulfilled the requirements for clinical measurement. The present study aims to define the trend of time related changes with local bacterial alteration of bacterial resistance in severe burns in our burn center during a 12-year period. Retrospective analysis of microbiological results on severely burned wounds between 1998 and 2009 was carried out. A study of 3615 microbial isolates was performed. Staphylococcus aureus was the most commonly isolated pathogen (38.2%) followed by A. baumannii (16.2%), Streptococcus viridans (11.4%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10.4%), coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS, 9.2%). The species ratios of S. aureus and A. baumannii increased significantly from 1st to 8th week of hospitalization, while those of Streptococcus viridans, P. aeruginosa and coagulase-negative staphylococci decreased during the same period. Bacterial resistance rates were compared between the periods 1998–2003 and 2004–2009. Vancomycin remained as the most sensitive antibiotic in S. aureus including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). It was very likely that the majority of infections caused by Streptococcus viridans, P. aeruginosa and coagulase-negative staphylococci occurred in the early stage of burn course and the majority of infections caused by A. baumannii occurred 4weeks after admission.
