Drawing on Michel de Certeau's conceptualisation of the city space in The Practice of Everyday Life, in conversation with AbdouMaliq Simone's approach to the African city, this article explores the problem of belonging in Ufrieda Ho's Paper Sons and Daughters: Growing Up Chinese in South Africa (2011). The text's navigation of the manifold ascribed and asserted identities of the autobiographical self is made prominent through Ho's tracing of the traversals of both her father and herself across Johannesburg. In particular, the illegal gambling game of fahfee and its operation become emblematic of the imbrication of Chinese immigrants within the urban space, positioning the figures in the text within the broader historical and literary archive of Johannesburg and thereby asserting a rootedness within the (post-)apartheid city. Jayanta Mahapatra's literary corpus is versatile and reflective to the windows of the world. His Door of Paper: Essays and Memoirs (2007) is the finest flowering ever written by an Indian English poet compared to the theory of poetry of Wordsworth, Shelley and T. S. Eliot. He is the only Indian English poet who wrote the issues related to poetry about how to write poetry, the freedom of poetry, the silence of poetry and the timeframe of poetry and the significance of poetry. His pioneering book Door of Paper: Essays and Memoirs (2007) encompasses his autobiographical strain as well his ideas of poetry as felt during his composition of poetry. What Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Arnold and T. S. Eliot highlighted in their theory of poetry is also reflected in his ideas of poetry. So, this article attempts to highlight how Mahapatra's book Door Of Paper signifies his ideas about the freedom of poetry, process of poetic composition, the silence of poetry, the timeframe of poetry and the significance of poetry as compared to Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Arnold and T. The article discusses the newly published autobiography of Yang Yi, a renowned English-to-Chinese translator in modern China. The autobiography provides insights into social life in China and presents a left-elite historical narrative of the Republic of China. This paper looks at human development from an existential perspective. What is revealed is that human development is a lifelong process of the acquisition of the skills of living. Moreover that these are present in seven invariant themes that manifest in different ways throughout life. They are: age and ageing; narrative and autobiography; beginnings and endings; embodiment; randomness and chance; adversity; and love. These are considered in the light of psychotherapeutic practice. The author invites scholars from South Asian nations to contribute their papers with focus on important autobiographies and biographies in all of South Asia. He describes how autobiographies and biographies occupy an important place in Indian writing in English. He then offers a rationale and justification for writing autobiography, citing leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi. In addition, the author explores the controversial nature of biographies and autobiographies.

The aim of the present paper is to discuss the process of self-creation discernible in hitherto unpublished letters written by Wanda Dynowska-Umadevi to Tadeusz Szukiewicz, her literary representative in Poland, acting on her behalf in 1938-1939. Besides discussing the documentary value of the letters, which, for instance, shed some light on Dynowska's relationship with Tadeusz Pobożniak and her other eminent contemporaries, or contextualize the origin of selected volumes published afterwards with Biblioteka Polsko-Indyjska (Polish-Indian Library), I also try to show that the manner of Dynowska's self-creation in the personal documents that predominantly concern the efforts to publish her articles intended to popularize India in Poland could have been shaped by the particular addressee of her letters, and thus culminated in Dynowska projecting herself in her own writings. The article focuses on the autobiographical notes by painter Gerald Murphy from the papers of curator Douglas MacAgy. On May 17, 1962, MacAgy wrote to Murphy and requested him to expand and clarify certain points of biography and work. MacAgy's inquiries and Murphy's notes are contained in the Douglas MacAgy Papers at the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. An excerpt from Murphy's October 24, 1962 set of notes commenting on MacAgy's summary of his production is provided. According to the article, Murphy's numbered answers correspond to numbers in MacAgy's typescript.

Taking their inspiration from philosophy, human sciences have learnt that collecting people's life history is fundamental to understand and clarify situations and the «lebenswelt» of human beings. Life histories and the narrations of self provide the human scientist a deeper wiew and comprehension of the causes and reasons that other methodologies, such as observation, cannot get. Everyone is a storyteller of himself and such narrations of self enable us to know the invisible and the inner life of all our similars. Starting from this convinction Duccio Demetrio sees writing as a fundamental exercise that everyone should do in order to get a better knowledge of himself. This Editorial reports how the depletion force theory was originally developed by Sho Asakura and Fumio Oosawa and how their one-page paper was "rediscovered" about 20 years after the paper was published. The first part of this Editorial is mostly based on the lecture by Oosawa and his autobiographies, and the second part is written by one of two scientists who found the paper. The aim of this Editorial is to record the background of the discovery of the depletion force. We believe that this Editorial presents an interesting story showing how science develops. The story reminds us of the importance of basic education and continuous interests in unknown phenomena and interactions between people of different disciplines, although they are sometimes considered as separate elements of research. John Sung (1901–1944) was a prominent Chinese Christian evangelist whose enduring influence is still recognized through China and Southeast Asia. His reputation has long been based primarily on his autobiography and excerpts from his diaries that his daughter Levi Sung selected and published. The correspondence, writings, and extensive diaries of Sung recently acquired by the Yale Divinity Library shed new light on his life and work. This article gives a detailed account of provenance, content, and format of all the materials included in the Sung papers. They are invaluable to the study and rediscovery of Sung's life, thought, and ministry as well as the history and development of indigenous Christianity and churches in China and Southeast Asia. This article also examines Sung's English diaries from the period of his hospitalization in a psychiatric facility to reveal complexities in Sung that have been less evident in published biographies and writings. Five additional original diary entries will be compared to their published versions to reveal alterations, deletions, and inaccuracies in the published extracts. The comparative study demonstrates that the diary extracts compiled by Levi, which are the most commonly-cited source on Sung, are in some cases problematic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Omar ibn Said's 1831 autobiography The Life of Omar ibn Said stands out in American slave narratives for presenting an enslaved Muslim's experiences written in Arabic, defying the dominant Englishlanguage tradition. This article investigates how Said's choice to write in Arabic is an act of resistance, allowing him to reassert his identity in defiance of the dehumanizing institution of American slavery. This paper argues that Said's autobiography functions as a counternarrative that emphasizes his intellectual identity and humanity by challenging the typical captivity narratives of American slave narratives--strategically utilizing silence to portray suffering while also incorporating Islamic literary styles and paradigms that resist conforming to mainstream American literary conventions. By analyzing Said's strategic use of Arabic and Islamic narrative forms, this paper advocates for re-examining and expanding the American literary canon to encompass diverse voices and experiences. This article considers the staging of documents and national identity in Talgat Batalov’s 2012 theatre productionUzbek, an autobiographical solo show that recounts Batalov’s experience emigrating from Tashkent to Moscow at the age of nineteen. Through its close reading ofUzbekin performance, this study illustrates how the author uses irony and humor to both embody and elucidate the sociospatial discourse that posits Russia as the “modern center” to Central Asia’s “pre-modern periphery.” Additionally, this article explores how by presenting his audiences with his actual immigration records, and undermining their credibility, Batalov activates the unreliable status of documents in contemporary Russian culture. "The Novel as readers now understand it did not really exist as a literary form in English during the late seventeenth century and the early decades of the eighteenth", John Richetti (2017: 152) has recently pointed out. Prior to this, in 1957, Ian Watt conceptualised the "myth of modern individualism". This paper focuses on Robinson Crusoe and the rise of the English novel, revisiting some key excerpts in order to propose a new approach to the new genre. Michael McKeon (2017: 67) postulated that "The novel crystallizes genreness, we might say, selfconsciously incorporating, as part of its form, the problem of its own categorical status". This paper addresses the above proposal, examining the adventures of the eponymous voyager from York. In particular, it pays attention to the various means by which reality is recorded in his autobiographical account, as well as the numerous narrative forms through which the reader is presented with the events of Crusoe's life. The paper briefly presents the main stages of the development of the Triestine literary tradition, which phenomenon begins to be widely noticed already in the 1930s. At that time, the first generation of a new Triestine literature (with its main pioneers - Italo Svevo, Scipio Slataper, Umberto Saba) became an interesting object of study for those critics and scholars who were able to distinguish some of its essential features. Subsequently, the author focuses on the idea of Triestine identity presented by a contemporary Italian writer Claudio Magris in a book entitled Trieste. Un'identità di frontiera. Then, the author proposes her interpretation of Magris' novel Microcosms, presenting it as the most significant attempt of expressing both writer's and city's Triestine identity; a portrayal of the city of paper re-written in the language and style of an essayistic, autobiographical novel. Historians of sociology have long recognized the Protestant ambience within which the discipline emerged in the United States. Autobiographies elicited by L. L. Bernard in the 1920s and 1930s provide insight into the impact of this background on early American sociologists. In addition to confirming the importance of mainstream Protestantism, the autobiographies reveal a multitude of identity strategies adopted by those who came to call themselves sociologists. In negotiating the relation of religious and secular spheres, some abandoned religion en route to a sociological career. Others became sociologists of religion, separated value-laden (religious) aspects of their lives from value-neutral (sociological) endeavors, created a sociologically informed mode of Protestantism, or molded a Protestant sociology. Space is man-made socially constructed locations, without which they cannot have a comfortable life. Reflecting on the life experiences of the people who exist in the margins of the society, autobiography appears to be the appropriate genre that reflects the lived experiences of the characters as they live through them. It reflects not only the author's personal experiences but also the people whom they meet in their lifeworld. In other words, it is a narration of both individual and collective lived experiences. Dalit writing in Indian literature has become the most controversial topic in recent times, taking autobiography as its predominant form of writing. This paper attempts to explore Baby Kamble's The Prisons We Broke as a self-reflexive narrative. The characters experience extreme humiliation in the public and private spheres of their lives. The article presents lesson plans for middle level school that undertake a mulitmodal autobiography project, a local research project on the school's history and paired students background project.

This paper focuses on Vandana Mishra's autobiography I, the Salt Doll which was originally published as Mee Mithaachi Baahuli in Marathi in 2014 and translated by Jerry Pinto in 2016. It attempts to analyze the concept of protofeminism by unfolding some significant sociocultural reformations in women's lives in the colonial metropolis of Mumbai. The study explores how a section of women revolted against the rigid gender norms to assert themselves in the public realm. It also concentrates on the miserable plight of widows who adopted the nursing profession. This paper features how male stalwarts, in those days, advocated not only for the upliftment of women through education, but also championed women's involvement in theatres. The study employs narrative analysis and highlights how protofeminism can be useful to unearth Vandana Mishra's mother's strenuous challenge against regressive gender stereotypes surrounding female education and nursing profession while setting an example for women of the next generation to follow. In anticipation of Russell's new introduction to his 1925 second edition of Principia Mathematica, Jean Nicod wrote a letter which is reproduced in Russell's Autobiography. In the letter, Nicod wrote: "Since you are re-publishing Principia, I may remind you that I have proved both Permutation and Association by help of the other three primitive props (Tautology, Addition, and the syllogistic prop.), where I only changed the order of some letters.
