This study examines the perspectives and experiences of older lifelong participants in outdoor education/recreation. 32 participants, women (11) and men (21), aged 60-84 provided narratives of their lifelong engagements in the outdoors in nature-based activities. They were invited to write freely on their early experiences and their current engagements in the outdoors. The purpose was to explore and understand why and how serious lifelong older participants continued with their outdoor activities. This paper considers participants' current embodied engagements. The evidence suggests that as they age, their bodies become less able to deal with discomfort. Yet, the participants, as a consequence of their lifelong knowledge and experience, manage injuries and ill-health, choosing to adapt in various ways to enable their continued engagement/enjoyment in being active in nature. The study stresses the significance of lifelong engagement in the outdoors and the necessity for opportunities for outdoor nature-based experiences throughout the lifespan.

Attunement, connectedness and an 'in tune-ness' with places have repeatedly been proposed to be central to sustainable, reciprocal human-environment relations and in turn, wellbeing. In this paper, I examine young people's emplaced and embodied attunements with local beaches bordering the neighbourhoods in which they live. More specifically, the possibilities of participatory photo-talk approaches for sensing and accessing people's attunements to beachplaces are proposed. Participants' views on using photo-talk approaches are foregrounded, including the prompt and momentum given to exploring embodied feelings and experiences. The ways that photo-talk supported a shared exploration of the diverse relational entanglements of human and more-than-human beach entities are also considered. In turn, the value of such approaches for helping to 'show' and 'feel' place-specific understandings and practices of beaching, including mutually constituted wellbeing a/effects, is proposed. Following in the footprints of others, I suggest the methodological and pedagogical potential of photo-talk approaches to researchers and educators in sport, health, physical education and leisure settings when examining embodied and emplaced experiences of wellbeing.

This paper reports on findings of an interpretive study, which used the Kaleidoscope Career Model as lens through which to view the careers of professional women in education. The study used hermeneutic phenomenology, a methodology novel in management and career management to gain a subjective perspective on women's career experience and what career means to them at different career stages. Findings indicated that women did not "opt-out," or adopt a clear-cut gender beta career pattern. Rather, they mirrored an alpha pattern with challenge continuing into mid-career. The three Kaleidoscope Career Model parameters operated in an ongoing way in women's lives, and authenticity was a powerful theme throughout their careers. However, women in late career tended to "lean back"; their desire for authenticity became subjugated by their need for balance. These findings add to extant Kaleidoscope Career Model research and reveal factors, which contribute to women's ability to "opt-in" rather than out of their careers.

Skin cancer is an increasing problem in Europe, America and Australasia, although largely preventable by avoiding excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure. This paper presents the findings of a systematic review of qualitative research about the prevention of skin cancer attributable to UV exposure. The aim is to understand elements that may contribute to the successful or unsuccessful conveyance of skin cancer prevention messages and their uptake by the public. A systematic review was undertaken using evidence identified through searching electronic bibliographic databases and Web sites and reference list checks. Predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were used. Sixteen study reports (relating to 15 separate studies) were included from the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Each included study was quality appraised, and the findings were extracted into an evidence table. A coding scheme, framed by the Health Belief Model, was developed by the reviewers and informed analysis and synthesis. This showed that most people perceived their susceptibility to skin cancer, and its severity, as low. While benefits of adopting changed behaviour were acknowledged, there were substantial barriers to this, including positive perceptions of a tan as healthy and attractive and the hassle of covering up or using sunscreen. Peers, parents and media may offer "cues to action" that encourage adoption of preventative behaviour and finally self-efficacy or the perceived ability to make such changes. Effective health education messages will need to address the barriers to adopting protective behaviours identified through this review.

This paper reports the results of a study to understand why some New Zealand dairy farmers are changing from twice-a-day (TAD) to once-a-day (OAD) milking. Increasing herd size, unavailability of suitable labour and changing lifestyle expectations from farmers and their staff have led some to explore OAD milking as a means of alleviating these issues. A convergent interviewing process was used with 21 dairy farmers who had all adopted OAD milking. A marketing approach, based on consumer behaviour theory and farming systems theory, was used to classify farmers into segments based on their different reasons for adoption. Six segments were identified, viz., herd expansion, time needed to build capital, decreasing labour, increasing labour flexibility, feed shortfalls, and herd health, motivating farmers to adopt OAD milking. Farmers in some segments such as herd expansion and feed shortfalls indicated that they were less likely to be long-term adopters than those in the other segments. Farmers interviewed unanimously understood that OAD milking led to reduced milk yield but were generally prepared to tolerate this to achieve their short-term or long-term goals. The phenomenon of migration makes many careers international, and globalisation has accelerated the process. This paper reports on a program of studies, now labelled "talent flow," conducted in New Zealand with a view to increasing understanding of migration and its relationship to careers. Initial studies considered the phenomenon of "overseas experience" and its largely beneficial effects on career development. A current study focused on "brain drain" is examining the attitudes of over 2000 highly qualified New Zealand expatriates to the idea of returning to their home country. Some preliminary results are presented. Future studies of brain gain, immigration and careers are planned. (Contains 1 table.)

Accessible summary: What is known on the subject?: Contemporary mental health policy stipulates consumer participation in all aspects of mental health services including service evaluation and other forms of mental health research.Research is identified as underpinning quality mental health services, and therefore, consumers researchers could enhance the mental health sector by contributing to the quality, credibility and relevance of mental health research. Introduction: Contemporary mental health policy identifies consumers as active participants in all aspects of mental health services from design to evaluation. Consumer researchers should be actively involved in mental health research and contribute to quality service delivery. Aim: To gain a snapshot of mental health researcher views on strategies for increasing research by or with consumers in mental health through the establishment of an Expert Consumer Researcher Group (ECRG). Methods: Cross‐sectional survey of 41 non‐consumer mental health researchers from Australia or New Zealand. Results: The introduction of an ECRG was considered an effective strategy for linking consumer and non‐consumer researchers and providing specialist advice on research design and methodology. The most suitable location for this group was identified as within consumer advocacy agencies (71%), universities (66%) or research funding bodies (66%). Participants rated their likelihood of seeking advice from the ECRG as high. Discussion: Research participants supported the value of an ECRG. They emphasized the importance of ensuring the group reflected a diversity of views and offered specialized expertise related to the specific topic. The ECRG could benefit both individual researchers and larger research organizations. Implications for practice: An ECRG could facilitate collaborations with consumer researchers and in turn enhance the quality of mental health research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose -- This paper has two objectives. The first is to see whether "shared values" is an important intermediary, or part of the "black box" (along with organisational commitment and job satisfaction), between HRM practices and firm performance. The second is to assess whether the use of multiple levels of respondents produces different results compared with the usual practice of using senior HRM managers or, in lieu, another senior manager. Design/methodology/approach -- A survey methodology is used to obtain perceptual data on HRM practices and a variety of work-related attitudes. The sample comprises managers, supervisors and workers from 27 New Zealand firms. Statistical analysis, using SPSS, was performed at the firm and individual level. Findings -- At group-level there are wide differences in attitudes towards HRM activities. The desirability of using as many respondents as possible, and also respondents from different levels within organisations, was confirmed. "Shared values" is also deemed worthy of inclusion in the "black box" as it relates significantly to perceptions of HRM practices. However, organisational commitment and job satisfaction appear to have a stronger role. Research limitations/implications -- Current writings suggest that certain HRM practices can foster a system of shared values amongst the workforce. The study finds this indeed to be the case at the individual level. However, the supposition that a shared value system significantly contributes to the promotion of other desirable attitudinal outcomes has not been supported by the study's findings. A limitation of the study is that it did not explore the HRM-firm performance relationship in its entirety. Further research exploring all linkages in this relationship is now required. Practical implications -- The paper concludes that practitioners should be wary of pursuing an agenda that sees the development of a shared value system as the key to superior firm performance. Instead, it is suggested that the values of the organisation should be considered as the foundation from which a set of mutually reinforcing and supportive HRM practices is developed. Background: Cognitive enhancement is the use of prescription stimulant medicines by healthy individuals for nonmedical use in academic settings. Commonly used cognitive enhancers (CEs) include methylphenidate, amphetamines, and modafinil. To understand the motivation to use CEs, it is important to look beyond prevalence and explore the extent to which attitudes, beliefs, and intentions predict the decision to use CEs. Objective: The study aimed to investigate what factors explain the decision to use CEs among tertiary students in New Zealand, using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). Methods: Students from the Schools of Pharmacy, Nursing, Medicine, Law, and Accounting at a university in New Zealand were invited to complete a paper-based questionnaire. The questionnaire elicited students' attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived control toward illicit use of CEs using TPB. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted. Results: Response rate was 88.6% (442/499). Students who perceived CE use to be socially and ethically acceptable were more likely to use CEs (odds ratio, OR: 1.56, 95% confidence interval, 95% CI: 1.153–2.105, p = 0.004). Students who were concerned about the health impact of CE use were less likely to use CEs (OR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.492–0.826, p = 0.001). Students who believed that CE use was approved were more likely to use them (OR: 1.648, CI: 1.193–2.278, p = 0.002). Conclusion: This research supports the notion that the decision to use CEs is not just an autonomous choice that occurs in isolation. Attitudes on the ethical and social acceptability of CE use were more likely to drive the decision to use CEs. The study provides the impetus for an integrative discussion by health care professionals and academics on the impact of attitudes, social norms, and advocates on the decision to use CEs. This paper reports on interviews conducted with 36 teachers involved in university preparation courses at language teaching centres in New Zealand. The interviews were designed to investigate teacher attitudes to extensive reading in higher educational contexts, and current practice in such contexts. While teachers expressed positive beliefs about the language learning benefits of extensive reading, these beliefs did not generally result in the inclusion of extensive reading in the classroom programme. This may reflect the realities of the wider educational context. If extensive reading is to be more widespread in higher educational contexts, it needs to be promoted through teacher education, new research, changes in course design, raising awareness among administrators and managers, and improved resource provision. Background: The surgical management of trauma within Australia and New Zealand has recently been undergoing major organizational changes. The aim of the present paper was to evaluate the attitudes and experience of Australian and New Zealand advanced surgical trainees in this changing climate and to identify problems with trauma training. Methods: A survey assessing important areas of trauma management and training was sent to all advanced surgical trainees of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Results: Two hundred and seventy-two of 587 trainees responded (46%). Overall 85% of trainees believed they would be involved in trauma management in the future. The majority of trainees reported low rates of involvement and consultant supervision in trauma resuscitations. Only 32% of general surgical trainees believed that their exposure to major trauma operations was very adequate despite an average of 12.3 trauma operations per year. Seventy per cent of general surgical trainees reported a very adequate level of consultant supervision at trauma operations. In contrast 86% of orthopaedic trainees reported a very adequate exposure to trauma operations with an average of 221 orthopaedic trauma operations per year. Only 46% of orthopaedic trainees reported a very adequate level of consultant supervision at trauma operations. Conclusions: Regional rotations may need to be developed to even out trainees’ experience in trauma management. The low level of supervision in trauma resuscitations and orthopaedic surgical training requires attention. This survey warrants repeating in a prospective manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: This research aimed to explore cat and dog owners' attitudes towards various pet care practices in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). An online survey was conducted from January to March 2019, and 2358 people responded to the pet care questions. The study revealed that almost all respondents felt that providing adequate housing, regular worming and flea treatments, microchipping, and vaccinations were important pet care practices. Fewer respondents felt that regular veterinary clinic visits were important, and some did not appear to understand that breeding for certain looks causes health problems for animals. Characteristics of pet owners, such as gender, ethnicity, age range, having children, having a rural upbringing, and place of residence, were associated with particular attitudes towards the various practices. Knowing about these factors will help develop strategies that ensure everyone understands what pet care practices are important for responsible pet ownership. Our findings emphasize some of the complexities that underlie NZ pet owners' attitudes and opinions towards various pet care practices. The findings underscore the need for additional research, culturally appropriate and effective educational resources, and customized strategies to encourage responsible pet care to ensure animals, along with their owners, live good lives. This research aimed to explore cat and dog owners' attitudes and opinions towards various pet care practices in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), and determine what factors were associated with them. An online survey composed of both closed and open-ended questions was administered from January to March 2019. A total of 2358 respondents answered the questions on pet care practices. Of these, 37.5 percent (n = 885) were both dog and cat owners, 28.0 percent (n = 652) were cat owners, and 26.0 percent (n = 609) were dog owners, while 9% (n = 212) of respondents did not own a cat or dog at the time of taking the survey. The study revealed that most respondents (>90%) acknowledge the importance of providing adequate housing, regular worming and flea treatments, microchipping, and vaccinations for their pets. Notably, demographic factors such as gender, ethnicity, age range, having children, having a rural upbringing, and place of residence influenced owners' attitudes, with those towards cat care practices varying more than those for dogs. The study highlights the need for responsible pet ownership interventions considering these demographic factors. The study identifies a knowledge gap among pet owners concerning the importance of regular veterinary visits and the impact of breeding for certain looks on animal welfare. The use of shock collar devices provoked varying opinions on their usage for training and behavior modification. The study suggests that enhancing pet owners' knowledge is pivotal for responsible pet ownership. Overall, the findings emphasize the need for tailored interventions that account for demographic variations for promoting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. The findings underscore the importance of improving access to veterinary health care teams, especially in rural areas, and of providing culturally appropriate education resources for both pet owners and veterinary health care teams. Satirical news and its effects on outcomes such as appreciation and persuasion have gained considerable currency as a topic of research in mass communication studies. Through the framework of construal level theory, we investigated whether different levels of spatial distance influence these effects. In a between-subjects experiment, participants in the United Kingdom (UK; n = 282) and New Zealand (NZ; n = 370) read a satirical or non-satirical news text summarizing a study reporting on the negative impact of increased digital device screen time on young children. Depending on condition, the texts referred to entities and locations in either the participant's own country (spatially close) or a foreign country (spatially distant). Results showed significant main effects of satirical news on audience perceptions, emotions, and attitudes. While there were no significant interactions between article type (satirical vs. regular news) and spatial distance (close vs. distant), our results indicated that satirical news was associated with higher perceptions of spatial distance for both the UK and NZ participants as well as higher perceptions of social distance for the NZ participants. Exploratory indirect-effects analyses found several indirect effects of satirical news through increased perceptions of spatial and social psychological distance on audience emotions, text perceptions, and attitudes. Predator Free 2050 (PF2050) is an ambitious goal that aims to remove three types of invasive mammals from New Zealand by 2050. It will require a significant amount of funding, research, and support. Young adults will have an important role to play for this programme to be successful. Therefore, understanding the awareness and attitudes of young adults towards PF2050, and predator control, is an essential consideration. A survey of 1479 18- to 24-year-olds was conducted in 2017. The results showed that a higher percentage of young adults than members of the broader public view the small, introduced mammals as threats to New Zealand's environment. Furthermore, this study highlights support for the control of feral, stray, and domestic cats. More focused research on attitudes towards cats is recommended to gauge which control methods are approved of by young adults. Indeed, methods appear to be a key factor to young adults supporting PF2050. The aerial distribution of poison was largely viewed negatively, and moderate concern was expressed about the targeted animal's welfare. Interestingly, young adults appeared to be open to the use of gene editing and gene drive, although they expressed caution. Objective: To explore the knowledge and attitudes of psychiatrists about psychedelics therapies. Method: Access to a cross-sectional survey was distributed to psychiatrists through social media channels. Attitudes and knowledge about psychedelic therapies were recorded using Likert scales and ranking questions. Results: Fifty-eight complete responses were collected (44 fully trained +14 trainee RANZCP members). Greater than 85% of respondents agreed there is a shortfall in effective psychiatric treatments, and greater than 65% agreed that psychedelic therapies might address this shortfall. The psychiatrists did not consider themselves knowledgeable about psychedelic therapies, with 60% showing interest in further training on this topic. About 70% of the sample hold various concerns about psychedelic therapies, and more believe that the prescription of psychedelics should be limited to psychiatrists in the future. Conclusion: Considering these results in the context of a rapidly changing landscape relating to psychedelic research and regulations, we suggest there is scope to develop up-to-date education about psychedelics for psychiatrists. Public support is crucial to the widespread application of pest control methods both in the form of political support and, where people have direct agency in control methods, compliance with the demands of the methods. It is commonplace for personal behaviours reflecting political support for public policies to be presumed to depend on relevant attitudes, beliefs and values of the person. The finite amount of attention and cognitive effort each person possesses implies that attention and effort are rationed, indicating that changing behaviour requires that the targeted individual is attentive and willing to invest the required cognitive effort; that is, they are motivated to consider new information and, subsequently, to reviewing their attitudes and behaviour. We examine whether attitudes and involvement (a measure of motivation) together provide better predictions of public support for pest control methods than attitudes alone, using the distribution of baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) in New Zealand to control invasive, non-native rats and possums as a case study. We found the novel combination of involvement and attitudes did provide significantly better predictions of an individual's support for using 1080 for the purpose of environmental conservation, and their pest control behaviour, than did attitudes alone. Introduction: Experts by Experience involvement in the education of health professionals has gained momentum as an important strategy in ensuring quality, person‐centred education. Despite being a requirement for occupational therapy programs in Australia and internationally, involvement is variable and limited. Barriers to the implementation of academic roles have been identified, including negative attitudes of colleagues, systemic barriers, and insufficient evidence of their value. Mental health academics who do not identify as having lived experience (referred to as allies) have provided crucial support for Experts by Experience. Understanding their perspectives on implementation barriers and how they can be addressed is crucial to facilitating a broader level of meaningful involvement. Methods: A qualitative exploratory research project was conducted, involving in‐depth interviews with mental health academic allies (n = 16) from Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand. Participants were from the disciplines of nursing, occupational therapy, social work, and psychiatry. Data were analysed thematically. Findings: Two main themes were identified from the data analysis process: convincing colleagues and dealing with university barriers. Participants described varying attitudes from colleagues towards Experts by Experience, with many not understanding or appreciating their contribution to education and student outcomes. At the university level, reluctance to embrace innovation and funding and other resource shortages presented impediments to the implementation of Expert by Experience roles. Participants described using creative measures to overcome institutional barriers and encourage greater acceptance of such roles by colleagues. Conclusion: This research describes how allies experienced and overcame barriers they faced when supporting the implementation of academic positions for Experts by Experience. Allies have an important role to play in overcoming systemic barriers, and the approaches they have taken to achieve this may be an important source of learning for others with similar aspirations. Background and Objectives: Gay and bisexual men (GBM) are deferred from donating blood in many countries. Perceptions by GBM that blood donor deferral policies are unjustifiably discriminatory, especially due to advances in HIV prevention, could contribute to non‐compliance and need to be understood. We explore blood donation interest and history among GBM and attitudes towards donor deferral policies for the first time in New Zealand (NZ). Materials and Methods: Data from a cross‐sectional online survey of GBM in NZ were examined. We constructed three groups: (1) never donated blood and not interested; (2) never donated but expressed interest; and (3) previously donated blood. We tested these for association with demographic and behavioural variables, as well as attitudes towards blood donation policy. Results: A total of 607 GBM were eligible for the study, of whom 32.9% reported having donated blood previously, 44.3% had never donated blood but expressed interest and 22.7% expressed no interest in donating. Among previous donors, a third (8.6% of the total sample) reported non‐compliance with the deferral policy. Most participants found the 12‐month deferral policy to be too strict (81.8%), unfair (75.4%) and homophobic (68.8%). Conclusion: We estimate that, for the first time in NZ, almost 10% of the sample did not report compliance with the 12‐month deferral policy for men who have sex with men (MSM). Negative attitudes towards the deferral policy were common and could potentially increase the risk to the blood supply if compliance reduces. Further work is needed to inform a deferral policy that is accepted by GBM while maintaining the safety of NZ's blood supply. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rugby union is a popular team sport, with a high rate of concussions. In adolescents, concussions are further complicated by issues of under-reporting. To encourage more responsible concussion behaviours, it is imperative to understand the factors that influence youth players' behaviours, including the attitudes and behaviours of their coaches and parents. The aim of this study was to explore concussion-related behavioural intentions and behaviours that may influence effective concussion management across a youth rugby system. The study adopted a pragmatic, descriptive qualitative design and included high schools from four youth rugby catchment areas in New Zealand. Nineteen focus groups and 2 individual interviews were conducted with n = 75 players, n = 22 parents, and n = 8 coaches (N = 105) during the 2018 rugby season. A thematic analysis was conducted, guided by a system's approach and the Theory of Planned Behaviour. The themes generated reflected a 'tug-of war' between various behavioural intentions and reported behaviours present in a youth rugby system. Additionally, the behavioural intentions and reported behaviours of coaches, parents, players and their teammates are intricately linked and collectively influence effective concussion management. Being aware of concussions and caring about their management and consequences was a strong theme present across the system. However, these favourable attitudes and behaviours were countered by players, parents and coaches disregarding the system, downplaying the seriousness of concussion, being competitive and driven to win, regardless of the risks. In players the warrior mentality theme, which included bravado, being tough, and playing through the pain further complicated effective concussion management. The findings suggest that there is not always a strong, favourable network in place that would facilitate similarly favourable concussion-related behaviours. To effect change, a system-wide approach, that takes the unique needs of each stakeholder into account and ultimately aims to reconcile performance and brotherhood with positive concussion related behaviours, is needed. Background: The prevalence of CAM use is increasing. This integrative review investigated New Zealand healthcare professionals' practice of, attitudes toward, and knowledge about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Methods: Literature search was conducted in four databases from inception to April 2020. Studies were included if they reported results from primary data collection on practice of, attitudes toward, or knowledge about CAM amongst New Zealand healthcare professionals. Results: Eleven studies (two of 'high-quality', seven of 'moderate-quality', and two of 'low-quality') were identified with 2060 healthcare professionals including general practitioners (GPs), nurses, midwives, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and medical specialists. New Zealand healthcare professionals were generally positive regarding CAM use, but have concerns on the scientific evidence, regulation, safety, financial costs of CAM, and encourage an evidence-based CAM practice and stronger CAM regulation. Findings indicated that around 25% of GPs practise CAM, and 82.3% refer patients to CAM practitioners. When treating pregnant women, 48.4% of physiotherapists practise acupuncture, and 37.3% of midwives recommend CAM. GPs believe that acupuncture is the most helpful CAM modality, and most commonly practiced and referred patients to acupuncture. Up to 58% of GPs and Plunket nurses wanted to receive further education on CAM, and up to 66.7% GPs favour the idea CAM should be included in medical curriculums. Conclusions: Nine of the 11 included studies were of moderate to high quality, thus enhancing the reliability of the review findings. In order to better manage CAM in New Zealand New Zealand clinical settings, there is a need to invest in CAM research and education, and enhance CAM regulation. This review is a first step in developing an evidence base to offer insights for further development of effective CAM policies regarding safety, efficacy, regulation and integration in New Zealand. INTRODUCTION: Understanding patients' awareness of the anatomical placement of their body organs is important for doctor--patient communication.AIM: To measure the correct anatomical placement of body organs by people from Australian and New Zealand general practices. METHOD: A questionnaire survey containing drawings of 11 organs placed in different locations within each drawing. RESULTS: Among 1156 participants, there was no difference in the proportion of correct placement of 11 organs between Australian (51.7%) and New Zealand (49.6%) general practices. There was a positive correlation between the proportion of correctly placed organs and the age participants left school (p=0.012) and a negative correlation with the number of GP visits in the previous year (p=0.040). Participants from rural Australia were more likely to correctly place organs than urban participants (p=0.018). The mean proportion of organs correctly placed for doctors was 80.5%, nurses 66.5%, allied health 61.5%, health administrators 50.6% and the remaining consulting patients 51.3%. DISCUSSION: Patients from Australian and New Zealand general practice were poorly aware of the correct placement of organs. Background: Oral cancer is a growing problem worldwide, with high incidence rates in South Asian countries. With increasing numbers of South Asian immigrants in developed countries, a possible rise in oral cancer cases is expected given the high prevalence in their source countries and the continued oral cancer risk behaviours of immigrants. The aim of this review is to synthesise existing evidence regarding knowledge, attitudes and practices of South Asian immigrants in developed countries regarding oral cancer.Methods: Five electronic databases were systematically searched to identify original, English language articles focussing on oral cancer risk knowledge, attitudes and practices of South Asian immigrants in developed countries. All studies that met the following inclusion criteria were included: conducted among South Asian immigrants in developed countries; explored at least one study outcome (knowledge or attitudes or practices); used either qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods. No restrictions were placed on the publication date, quality and setting of the study.Results: A total of 16 studies involving 4772 participants were reviewed. These studies were mainly conducted in the USA, UK, Italy and New Zealand between 1994 and 2018. Findings were categorised into themes of oral cancer knowledge, attitudes and practices. General lack of oral cancer risk knowledge (43-76%) among participants was reported. More than 50% people were found engaging in one or more oral cancer risk practices like smoking, betel quid/pan/gutka chewing. Some of the participants perceived betel quid/pan/gutka chewing habit good for their health (12-43.6%).Conclusion: This review has shown that oral cancer risk practices are prevalent among South Asian immigrants who possess limited knowledge and unfavourable attitude in this area. Aim: Many dietitians are yet to incorporate the Nutrition Care Process and Terminology (NCPT) into practice. The present study investigated factors predicting (i) NCPT use, (ii) perceived importance of NCPT implementation and (iii) perceived NCPT applicability to personal dietetic practice among dietitians in the Asia‐Pacific region. Methods: Dietetic association members from Australia, New Zealand and Singapore were invited to participate in an online survey assessing NCPT implementation, knowledge, and self‐rated familiarity, attitudes, benefits, concerns, barriers, and enablers. Forward stepwise logistic regression used all factors to identify predictive dietetic characteristics for current NCPT use, importance or applicability to practice. Results: A total of 377 dietitians (5%–55% of national dietetic memberships surveyed) completed at least one survey question. In logistic regression models, independent positive predictors of current NCPT users were knowledge (P = 0.003), confidence to implement (P = 0.036), confidence to write nutrition diagnoses (P = 0.002) and experiencing managerial support (P = 0.004). Not seeing a reason to change was a significant negative predictor of NCPT use (P = 0.003). An independent positive predictor of dietitians viewing NCPT implementation as important was feeling that it will improve patient care (P < 0.001), while negative predictors were seeing minimal benefit in changing (P < 0.001) and a preference to continue with current routine (P = 0.015). Independent positive predictors of dietitians viewing NCPT as applicable to their practice were NCPT knowledge (P = 0.009), seeing the value of NCPT (P < 0.001) and attendance at workshops or conferences (P = 0.014). Conclusions: NCPT implementation may be enhanced thorough activities building confidence, gaining managerial corroboration and demonstration of NCPT benefits, including improved patient care. The development of energy literacy (knowledge, attitudes, and intended behaviour) and agency of New Zealand children (age 9–10) were investigated through thematic and exploratory statistical analyses of interviews (October 2011–April 2012) with 26 children, their parents and teachers, focus groups and photo elicitation. The children knew that electricity costs money and saw it as a finite resource. Half could name an energy source but few knew of any associated environmental issues. Most of the children had a positive attitude towards saving electricity, but did not intend to save energy to a further extent (low intended behaviour) and were not influencing their families to conserve energy (low agency). The children were learning about energy informally from a variety of sources, and acquired their attitudes mostly from talking to their parents. Internationally, associations between mathematics achievement and various beliefs and attitudes related to learning are well established. In this article, the findings of five studies are examined to identify patterns in New Zealand students' mathematics-related beliefs and attitudes, and their relationships with achievement. Each study included an assessment of students' beliefs and attitudes as well as their mathematics achievement, involved students in the 5 to 13-year-old range, and was reported in the 2009-2015 period. Students' beliefs and attitudes were measured at various levels of specificity, ranging from beliefs about the malleability of intelligence, to confidence in their general mathematics ability, to task-specific mathematics self-efficacy judgments. It will be argued that using task-specific measures of students' mathematics self-efficacy is of particular value for revealing a relationship between achievement and self-belief, and that teacher-implemented micro-interventions can be effective in strengthening both achievement and self-belief. The aim of the 'More Diversity on-Screen' campaign and survey was to raise public awareness of the under-representation of disability on-screen in New Zealand, as well as to explore New Zealanders' views about the inclusion of disabled actors and characters in media. The study took an 'action research' approach, producing and broadcasting a 30-second TV commercial that encouraged viewers to participate in an online survey aiming to capture attitudes and opinions around the inclusion of more diversity on-screen. Results of the survey showed clear support for the idea of more diversity on-screen, but it also became clear that the task of getting more representation of disability in media is a complex task, requiring a much longer time frame than originally anticipated. Dean (2004)'s taxonomy of moral repertoires explains contradictory and complex responses to questions about social citizenship in Britain. But are the moral repertoires identified in Britain relevant to other English-speaking ' liberal' welfare states? Analysis of interview and focus group data finds the taxonomy is useful for exploring ambivalent attitudes towards social citizenship in New Zealand, where popular discourse regarding responsibility and conditionality is more flexible and varied than that promoted by political elites. Responses do not always fall neatly within Dean's (2004) taxonomy and context does matter in some cases, but the New Zealand findings largely support his view that popular discourse's complexity and contradictions offer a space for galvanising social citizenship. This article provides a detailed analysis of individual preferences towards public financial aid to students from low-income families. Who favours/opposes such aid? What are the determinants of the respective preferences? I argue that three sets of factors jointly shape these preferences: materialistic self-interests, political attitudes, and the status quo of the higher education subsidy systems by generating positive feedback-effects. Results of multilevel ordered logit models utilizing the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) data for up to 22 countries over two decades indicate that self-interest matters: students strongly favour subsidies as do their parents, while those paying for the spending and those not expecting to benefit oppose such aid. Moreover, political attitudes are important: Supporters of redistribution and of increased public education spending in general, as well as leftwing voters, are much more likely to support students. On the macro-level, the findings suggest that positive feedback-effects exist: in countries with generous subsidy systems, public support for subsidies is higher. This article is the first to systematically analyse preferences towards higher education subsidies across countries and time and demonstrates how positive feedback-effects increasingly lock-in countries’ tuition-subsidy paths, making the systems resistant to (radical) change. This study used data from the Assessment Tools for Teaching and Learning project, which involved data on the academic performance of more than 90,000 New Zealand students in six subjects (i.e. reading, writing and mathematics in two languages). Two sub-samples of this dataset were included for detailed re-analysis to test the general applicability of the Australian model of Quality of School Life (Ainley et al. ) in the New Zealand context. The first sample comprised 336 year 8 students from elementary schools and the second sample consisted of 272 year 10 students from high schools. Furthermore, two structural equation models were developed and tested, expressing relationships between students' quality of school life perceptions, students' attitudes to mathematics, and their effects on mathematics achievement. The quality of school life questionnaires scales [Ainley and Bourke, in Res Pap Educ 7(2):107-128, ] were used as indicators of students' perceptions regarding learning, teachers and peer relationships. The model proposed that perceived quality of school life would affect students' attitudes of liking and confidence in mathematics, which would in turn affect their academic performance. After controlling for other variables in the model, students' perception about their self-efficacy to learn mathematics was more directly related to outcomes than to perceptions of teacher quality or peer involvement. Data analyses revealed no apparent relationships of these factors to mathematics achievement. Moreover, results for both samples led to the conclusion that the perceived quality of learning is connected with 'confidence in' and 'liking mathematics', which in turn predict students' mathematics achievement. This research provides details about a group of young New Zealand women's awareness of, interest in and attitudes towards the use of animals in scientific research and teaching. These findings were compared to a similar survey of the New Zealand public. An adapted, anonymous questionnaire was used to gather data from 90 young women (14–15 years) from an urban secondary school. While nearly half expressed concern about animal use in research (43%), their awareness was not consistent with the reality of animal research in New Zealand, either in terms of its impact on animals or animal species used. They were unconcerned about the use of animals in teaching and associated such use with enhanced learning. Justification for the use of animals in research and teaching was shown to be complex and contextualized, with an instrumental qualifier being used to justify their opinions. Even though many students were unaware of the regulations surrounding animal use in research and teaching, they were mistrustful that these regulations were being followed by scientists. itudes towards public transport (PT) in New Zealand's three largest cities (Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch) were examined in a cross-sectional survey of drivers. A measure of prejudice to PT was developed to assess the strength and nature of attitudinal differences. Auckland residents had the highest levels of PT prejudice while Wellington residents had the lowest, and these differences were not related to demographic differences between the samples. Direct contact with PT was associated with reduced levels of PT prejudice, but measures of indirect contact, beliefs about using PT, and environmental attitudes were stronger predictors of PT prejudice scores. Controlling for these variables resulted in the difference in PT prejudice levels between Wellington and Christchurch becoming non-significant, while the differences between Auckland and the other two cities remained. This suggests that the difference between Wellington and Christchurch was primarily based on social norms regarding PT prejudice, while quality of service was a factor in the difference between Auckland and the other two cities. Previous literature has situated retirement and retirement planning within the male’s domain by positioning women as unconcerned and therefore ill prepared for retirement. However, women’s increasing representation in the workforce requires a reexamination of their retirement plans and the factors that enable them. In this study, a subsample of 2,277 working men and women from the New Zealand Health, Work, and Retirement Survey provides the basis for a structural equation model examining the effects of socioeconomic status, work involvement, and retirement perceptions on retirement planning. This model also tests for gender differences to assess the extent to which women are disadvantaged in terms of their retirement planning and the factors that may affect retirement plans. Results indicated that perceptions of retirement and economic living standards were associated with financial preparedness. However, women were still economically disadvantaged compared to men and this impacted negatively on their financial preparations. Retirement and retirement planning is now of greater concern for women. Future promotional initiatives should be aimed at these groups to assist their financial preparations for the future. Aim: To describe and investigate the relationship among the sun-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of New Zealand primary schoolchildren and consider the roles of sex and school year level. Methods: A randomly selected, two-stage cluster sample of 488 children from 27 primary schools in five regions of New Zealand was surveyed regarding their sun-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours. A scoring system was used to assign a knowledge, attitude and behaviour score to each child. Results: Although knowledge increased with school year level, there was a decline in sun protective attitudes and behaviours. There was little variation in knowledge, attitudes and behaviour between boys and girls, but sex–year level interactions were found for knowledge and behaviour. When considering children's knowledge, attitudes and behaviours simultaneously, knowledge was only significantly associated with behaviours when mediated by attitudes. Conclusions: When targeting child sun protection and skin cancer prevention programmes, a focus on attitudes towards sun exposure and a suntan may prove beneficial in influencing sun-related behaviours.
